Glenbervie Golf Club Information for New Members Regarding Competitive Golf at Our Club To all New Members On behalf of the Match & Handicap Committee & Ladies Committee we have written this Brochure to ensure that all recently joined Members of the Golf Club have the opportunity to become fully involved with all the playing activities throughout the year. Accordingly, the following information is set out to advise you of Handicap requirements and give some details of our Competitions. OF INTEREST TO OUR GENTLEMEN MEMBERS You will see in the Glenbervie Club Diary, from April to October, we hold Gents Medals on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and from November to March we hold Stableford Competitions also on Wednesdays and Saturdays. To compete in these events you need to have a Handicap and the following Notes detail our requirements in this regard. If you are aged 55 or over, Glenbervie has a very active Seniors Section who have their own Organising Committee to run several Competitions throughout the summer months. They also arrange Inter Club Matches, (Home & Away). Advice on all of their Competitions & Matches can be found on the separate Seniors Notice Board located in the Gents Locker Room. We hope the following information helps you enjoy your Membership of Glenbervie to the full and that you are able to participate as much as possible in the various events. Please don t hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. In the absence of the Match Secretaries, our Club has very helpful Secretary s office staff, who will also endeavour to answer any questions you may have with regard to your Membership of the Club. Anything they can t answer right away, they will quickly get back to you after researching your question with the appropriate source in the Club. We don t claim to be perfect or have all the answers but we do endeavour to give our Members the best service possible.

HANDICAP REQUIREMENTS If you have an existing handicap with another Club, please obtain a Handicap Certificate from your previous Club and pass it on to us as soon as possible. We will then load your Name and Handicap onto our Computer List which will allow you to participate in our Competitions. You must also advise us if you intend to nominate Glenbervie as your Home Club for Handicap purposes. If you are a Member of more than one Club, you require to advise all of them which Club will be your Home Club and therefore responsible for the management of your Handicap. With the introduction of the SGU Centralised Handicapping System, your previous Club should have issued you with a 10 digit personal identity number for use when playing in Away Competitions. This requires to be advised to us to allow for the transfer to Glenbervie Records. On selection of your Home Club, thereafter it is YOUR responsibility to advise them of every result you have in a Qualifying Competition if the Host Club does not make use of the Central Database for handicaps. Glenbervie has an Away Scores Register which is kept in the Alexander Lounge for Members to advise the Match & Handicap Committee of any movement, up or down with your Handicap. If you choose to keep your existing Club as your Home Club, our Computer will list you as an Away Player for Handicap purposes. You will find that after completion of a Medal/Stableford Round, when you call up your name on the Computer to enter your score, you will first be asked to verify your Handicap. If your Playing Handicap has altered since your last entry you will be asked to bring it up to date in accordance with that advised by your Home Club. NO HANDICAP? If you don t have a Handicap, you will require to return 3 cards to the Match Secretaries. These require to be countersigned by a Glenbervie Member and must have been played for over a measured course (White or Yellow Tees). We will allocate you an appropriate handicap based on your performances and with regard to the guidance given us under the CONGU Handicap Rules. These calculations ensure that your score at any hole will only be accepted as a maximum of 2 over par so a 7 at a par 4 will be counted as a 6 or a 10 at a par 5 will be counted as a 7!! It has been decided that the maximum initial Handicap issued will be 18 unless the new Member supplies us with a Certificate from their last Club. Any new Handicap of 18 will be monitored and should it become obvious that the person is under handicapped, steps will be taken to adjust upwards. Your Handicap will be detailed and updated on the Master List which can be called up at any time on our Computer in the Alexander Lounge. FURTHER HANDICAP INFORMATION At the end of each year, all Handicaps are vetted to ensure that Members have returned a minimum of 3 Qualifying Scores in the playing season. These scores can be returned in Home or Away Competitions as long as they are designated as Qualifying Competitions.

At Glenbervie, all Medal Competitions held between April & October are so designated provided weather conditions do not alter them. All Stablefords between November & March are designated Non Qualifying. All our Away listed Members will have their Handicaps checked by their respective Home Club. It is your responsibility to advise us of any alteration to your Handicap status. In the event that you do not return a minimum of 3 cards, your handicap will become non competitive. Should this happen, you will require to return a further 3 cards played over a measured course as previously indicated to have it reinstated. Remember, you must have a legal handicap to participate in any of our Competitions, Strokeplay or Matchplay! In the event that your Handicap becomes non competitive, our Computer will refuse to accept your entry. Each year, we post our Entry Lists for our main Matchplay Competitions on the Gents Notice Boards in early January. These Lists are left open till approx Early March (see Diary for date of Draws for Gents Competitions). To participate in these Competitions, you must have a legal handicap as at the date the Draws are made. You can enter your name on the sheets and pay your entry monies prior to receiving your handicap but you must have played for your handicap and returned 3 cards prior to the Draws. In the event that you enter but do not obtain a handicap or pay for your entry, you will be excluded from the Draws and any entry monies paid will be refunded. At the present time, the Greens Committee have made the decision to insist that all play between November and March inclusive will be restricted to use of Mats to protect the Fairways. Alternatively Players can remove their ball to the Rough, right or left of each Fairway dependent on where the ball finishes and relevant to the centre of each Fairway. NB Play from the Semi Rough must also be from a Mat. Under normal circumstances this would affect the playing of rounds to obtain a score for Handicap purposes! However, in an effort to encourage our Members to obtain a Handicap to participate in Club events, the M&H Committee has agreed to accept cards returned under these circumstances provided you are playing to the Full Greens and not Winter Greens. HOW HANDICAPS ARE CALCULATED All our Club Handicaps are issued and controlled by the Clubs Match Secretaries who are answerable to the Match & Handicap Committee. These Handicaps follow the guidelines laid down by CONGU, (Council of National Golf Unions) and apply to both Men & Women. A concise summary of its main points follows. The Glenbervie Scorecard, obtainable from the Professionals Shop includes a stroke index, which shows the holes on which you are entitled to claim a stroke, in accordance to your Handicap. Calculating Your Handicap All Players have an Exact Handicap and a Playing Handicap. Your Exact Handicap is calculated in the way described below and usually produces a figure with a decimal point e.g This is rounded up or down to the nearest whole figure to produce your Playing Handicap. 0.5 is rounded up Golfers Playing Handicaps are divided into 4 Categories for Men and 5 for Ladies:

Category 1 is for Handicaps of or 0 to 5 inclusive 2 6 to to to 28 Ladies only 5 29 to 36 The Category you are in affects the way change to your Handicap is calculated. For a start, each Category has a different Buffer Zone which means if you return a card (in a Qualifying Competition) which shows that your nett score (Gross minus Playing Handicap) exceeds the CSS or Competition Scratch Score by the number of strokes in your Buffer Zone or less, then there will be no change to your Handicap. Buffer Zones are as follows: Cat 1 0 to +1 Cat 2 0 to +2 Cat 3 0 to +3 Cat 4 0 to +4 Ladies only Cat 5 0 to +5 If your Nett Score exceeds the CSS by MORE than the number of strokes in your Buffer Zone, your EXACT handicap will be increased by 0.1 in all cases no matter how high your score was on that day. E.g. A cat 3 player (with an Exact H/cap of 14.4) will have no change to his h/cap provided his nett score does not exceed 3 strokes higher than the CSS of the day. However, should his nett score be 4 or more shots higher than the CSS of the day, his EXACT h/cap would go up by 0.1 to This would in turn push his PLAYING h/cap up from 14 to 15. If your nett score is lower than the CSS, your EXACT h/cap will be adjusted downwards by the following amounts for EACH STROKE that your nett score is lower than the CSS. Cat 1 subtract 0.1 for each stroke below Cat Cat Cat Ladies only Cat E.g. If a cat 3 player with an EXACT h/cap of 14.4 returned a nett score 4 strokes below the CSS, his EXACT h/cap would be reduced by 4 x 0.3 = 1.2. The EXACT h/cap would become 13.2 and the PLAYING h/cap would be reduced from 14 to 13. When the calculations involve a change from one category to another, the Rules for each category are taken into account don t worry our Computer will work it out for you. SLOW PLAY During the 2005/06 Winter recess from Qualifying Competitions, your Match Secretaries researched the question of slow play throughout Scotland by contacting over 60 Clubs asking them to fill out a questionnaire on the subject and to return it to us. As a result of a response rate of over 60%, we were able to complete an in depth Report of this universal problem and illustrate the steps taken by various Clubs to try and overcome it. We opted to alter our pattern of Medal day start times as well as to introduce a system of Call Up at both the 2 nd & 7 th holes. Our Medals now start at 7.30am on a Saturday & though we tried to alter the time intervals between games, the introduction of our new internet booking system has required us to revert to 7 min/8min intervals throughout the day. We have

however inserted a few non bookable times to allow for possible catch up should a build up occurs. It is each Members duty to complete their Round as quickly as possible. If through illness or an inability to play at a reasonable pace, we would ask you to book a start time at a less popular time of the day. COMPETITION INFORMATION As already stated, at the beginning of each year, Notices will appear on the Notice Boards inviting entries for Knockout Matchplay Competitions which run throughout the playing season. They are as follows: MARSHALL TROPHY: Gents singles knockout. MACNAB QUAICH: Gents Two ball Foursomes knockout. DAILY MAIL TROPHY: Gents Four ball, better ball, knockout. MATHIESON TROPHY: Mixed Foursomes knockout. The Draws for these Competitions are held in March each year. Just add your name/names to the Entry Sheets and put your entry money in the box provided, in an envelope with your name and competition entered on it. If you do not have a partner, we will attempt to find you one by posting a sheet asking any Members currently looking for a playing partner to add their name. Partnerships can then be obtained by matching up potential entrants! All of the above Competitions are played with each Round required to be completed by a specific date, listed on each Competition Notice. At Glenbervie we do not designate one player as challenger. Both Players are deemed as responsible for the completion of games by the due date. Following each round, your Match Secretaries check the Notices and in the event that no name has been put through to the next round both Players will be excluded from the next round. Other Competitions: From April to October each year our Medals are Qualifying Competitions which affect your Handicap. The starting sheets for all Medal/Stableford competitions are posted via the online tee booking system which is accessed via Entries can be made via the internet, telephone or in person to the Proshop, however internet booking has slight priority. You can reserve a tee time via the internet from 8pm on the Monday evening prior to a Saturday Competition with the Start Sheet then available in the Proshop from 7.45am on the Tuesday morning for in person or telephone booking. For Wednesday competitions, the Starting Sheet is available from 8.00pm on the Thursday prior for internet booking with the Sheet being available from 7.45am on the Friday morning for in person or telephone booking. Early booking is advised for each Medal as popular start times can fill up quickly. From November to March we hold Stablefords with the entry arrangements as for Medals. Remember, you MUST advise the Professionals Shop as soon as possible if you subsequently require to cancel your entry. This will allow the possibility for another Member to replace you in the Competition.

SUPPLEMENTARY SCORES: With immediate effect both CONGU & the SGU have amended their Rules to allow all H/cap categories (excluding cat 1) to return Supplementary Scores throughout the Season (over their own Course). Member s MUST first notify the Pro s shop of their decision to return a score PRIOR to commencing play. Participation for these scores is NO LONGER restricted to only those persons who previously returned fewer than 7 qualifying scores in the previous year. After advising the pro & playing your round, ensure your card is marked Supplementary Score & leave it in the score box provided beside the computer in the Lounge. Cat 1 players can now only return a supplementary score from 1 st September & then only a max of 3 or sufficient cards to allow them to retain a competitive handicap (max 3 cards) Throughout the year, you will see different Competitions advertised on the Notice Boards. Some are Team Events, some for Individuals. The Entry Sheets for each are posted on the Notice Board approx 6 wks prior to the Event. For your information the following is a guide to each Competition. Please check your Diary for the appropriate dates! GENTS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: This is restricted to Members whose Playing Handicap does not exceed 7 on the day of the Event. A 36 hole qualifying day is held to obtain 16 Players with the lowest scratch scores to progress to knockout stages. The lowest scratch aggregate wins the Millar of Falkirk Trophy. The 16 Qualifiers play knockout rounds throughout the following week and the Final is played over 36 holes on the following Sunday which is designated as Finals Day. The Matchplay winner receives the Championship Trophy SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP: Played for by our Senior Gents aged 55 and over. Players are required to enter this Competition through an Entry Sheet on the Notice Board. Because the overall entry is limited, the Qualifying Rounds are held within normal Gents Medals and the Seniors scores are extracted and posted for all to see. One Saturday Medal and one Wednesday Medal are designated as Qualifying Rounds. Participants require to return at least one card with the lowest 8 scratch scores over the two rounds qualifying to play knockout Matchplay. THE LINDSAY COOPER TROPHY: This is open to Members with a playing Handicap between 8 & 14 on the date of the Event. The Trophy will be awarded to the leading Net Score and the top 8 scores will qualify to play Matchplay Knockout for the Andrew Gillespie Quaich. The 18 hole Final will take place on the Club Finals Day. MILLENNIUM BOWL: This is open to Members with a playing Handicap of 15 and over on the date of the Event. The lowest Net Score receives the Millennium Bowl. The Lindsay Cooper Trophy & The Millennium Bowl Qualifying Round will be played for on the same day. Please note that all entrants are required to reserve a start time within each Medal as no draw is made for this Competition. The leading 8 Nett Qualifiers go on to play Matchplay Knockout for the Bruce Muirhead Trophy.

NB Qualification for entry to the Scratch Club Championship, the Lindsay Cooper Trophy & the Millennium Bowl is based strictly on the Individuals Handicap at the date of each Event. Failure to qualify for one does not guarantee entry into the other! THE MORRISON TROPHY: This is a Four Man (Members only) Team Competition with the best two net scores to count at each hole. This is a very popular Event and it is suggested that you book early to ensure your start time ASSISTANT PROFESSIONALS DAY: This Competition is organised by our Professionals with the proceeds from the days Competition and Raffle going to help our young Assistants by paying towards all their Competition, travel and accommodation expenses throughout the year as well as assisting with our Junior Members Coaching The Competition consists of Four Person Teams (which can include Ladies and Guests). The best two net scores count at each hole. This event is very well organised and given good weather always has an excellent turnout (full). Early booking of a start time is recommended. All reservations are done through the Professionals Shop. JUBILEE TROPHY: This is an 18 hole Member/Guest Day Greensome Yet again this is a very popular Day. GENTS OPEN HANDICAP: Glenbervie has decided to hold a Gents Open for the first time in This Event has become a regular feature in the Glenbervie Season. There will be both Handicap & Scratch Voucher Prizes. It has been decided to guarantee a minimum of 40 places to Glenbervie Members which will be balloted if necessary. Away Players will be accepted on a first come basis. An engraved Gold Medal will be awarded to the Player with the lowest net score on the day. The max H/cap allowed is 18. OPEN MIXED FOURSOMES: The Glenbervie Mixed Foursomes has become established as one of the most popular on the Mixed Foursomes Circuit throughout Scotland. We tend to have full entries (130 couples) probably because we give good value for money (amongst the highest Prize values) and played over a course our Visitors tend to enjoy. Our Members get priority booking so watch out for the Entry Sheet going up in the Main Hall. This event is usually played on the last Sunday in July each year. THOMSON TROPHY FAMILY FOURSOMES: Two ball foursome made up by Teams of Member + Member Relative. This event is open to both males & females with either same sex or mixed partnerships.

THE WINTER LEAGUE: Teams of three (Men, Ladies or Mixed) Texas Scrambles with Teams allowed to call on one Reserve (not previously cup tied by any other Team). Any three from four can then represent the Team. Two Scrambles are held each month, November to March inclusive, one Saturday and one Sunday per month. The best 5 out of 10 scores to count to decide the Trophies. This has become a very popular form of Winter Golf at Glenbervie and has led to more participation in our Winter Golf Calendar and greater use of our Clubhouse. The Rules and Handicapping Instructions always appear with the Entry Sheets. SHOTGUN FOURSOMES BETTER BALL TEAM EVENT: This is a Gents only Competition played on a Weekday evening in May with a 5.30pm start & Teams of 4, finishing with a light Meal & Prizegiving to follow in the Clubhouse on completion. Competitors play for The Bingham Trophy. FOUR MAN TEAM TEXAS SCRAMBLE: Based on the success of our Winter League we hold an 18 hole Scramble on a Sunday in September or October. Teams can be made up of all Members or from a minimum of 2 Members & 2 Guests. THE PANTON TROPHY In 2007, we took the decision to acknowledge the contribution both John Panton (the Clubs first Professional, Ryder Cup Player, World Seniors Champion and many times Scottish Champion) and his daughter Cathy (British Ladies Amateur Champion and successful Ladies Professional) by introducing a new Competition. This will be known as the PANTON TROPHY and will be played annually as an 18 hole Medal Round open to both Male & Female Competitors with the Ladies receiving an appropriate handicap adjustment. This Event is now looked on as one of the top Competitions in our golfing Calendar and in addition to the winners name being added to the Trophy the Winner will receive an engraved Medal for their retention. Separate prizes will be awarded for each male & female section in addition to the overall prizewinners. SUMMER TEAM GREENSOMES SHOTGUN START Based on the success of the Gents Foursomes Shotgun Start it was decided to include an Event to be played close to the longest day using the same format but changing to a Greensomes (instead of Foursomes). Both Gents & Ladies qualify to participate & Teams can consist of either mixed or same gender. Ladies or Gents Tees to apply as appropriate. The evening culminates with a Meal & Prizegiving in the Clubhouse. THE AP ROBERTSON TROPHY This Trophy is presented to our Net Order of Merit winner each year. Each Individual who plays in our Monthly Medals between April & October qualifies to return the best 10 scores. In the event of a tie, the 11 th score will be used as a tie break. From 2011 it was decided to also award Vouchers to the 1 st & 2 nd placed Scratch Aggregates and playing for the John Campbell Trophy

TEAM MATCHES Glenbervie participates in the Stirlingshire Inter Club (Scratch) League. This involves us selecting an 8 man Team to represent us on a matchplay, scratch basis. This usually leads us to select Players of4 h/cap or better, though sometimes we can involve a higher h/cap. In 2014 the League was split into two Leagues of 5 Clubs with all Clubs playing home & away matches (8 games). The top 2 Teams in each Section will go forward to knockout semi finals & final! We welcome Players who attain the appropriate h/cap credentials to be considered for inclusion in the Glenbervie Team. Glenbervie also arranges a number of Friendly Matches playing Home or Away in alternate years. These tend to be four ball better ball games played under handicap. The Club would like to involve as many Members as possible in these games so keep your eyes on the Notice Board for any Team Match Information. If you wish to play in any of these fixtures, please add your name to the appropriate notice. As a Club, Glenbervie participates in National Golf Competitions and have previously won The UK Daily Mail Foursomes Title and in 2004 we became The Scottish Champions of The Mail on Sunday National Team Classic. We unfortunately narrowly lost out in the UK Quarter Finals in Manchester. In 2007 Glenbervie again became Scottish Mail on Sunday Champions. On this occasion we won our quarter final tie in Manchester & progressed to Spain! The Semi-final was played on St Andrews day with Glenbervie defeating Malton & Norton, a strong Yorkshire Team. The following day we played the Irish Champions in the Final but giving away a total of 32 holes start to our much higher handicapped opponents. The Match ended with a 3 to 2 defeat with the final game going to the last hole but with Glenbervie having to give away a stoke! So near to being Champions! This is the biggest Team Competition in the World so we always await our subsequent performances with some trepidation as the Team has much to live up to. In 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 & 2013 Glenbervie represented Stirlingshire in the SGU organised Scottish Club Team Championship and in 2006 & 2007 we were narrowly beaten into Silver Medal position by the last Team out on the Course. In 2010 we were tied third & in 2012 won Bronze Medals at Arbroath. In 2013 Glenbervie became Scottish Club Champions over the Luffness New Course and progressed to represent Scotland in the European Final in Portugal We look forward to your future participation in Representative Golf at Glenbervie. As a Club, Glenbervie has a good relationship with both the R&A and the SGU having hosted several National Events at both Professional and Amateur levels. As a matter of record, we are proud to have hosted The British Boys Matchplay, twice, when the winners turned out to be Jose Maria Olazabal and David Howell who have both gone on to establish their name, with distinction, in the Professional ranks & are both now Honorary Members of Glenbervie Golf Club. We have also hosted the Scottish Youths Open Strokeplay & The Scottish Veteran Ladies Strokeplay & Matchplay

OTHER INFORMATION Handicap Certificates: Members entering External Competitions or going abroad on holiday may require to obtain a Handicap Certificate for verification purposes. The Match Secretaries or our Club Secretary will be happy to print one off for you. If you telephone or in a request, the Certificate can be printed out and left for you to uplift from the Bar or the Secretary s Office. These certificates include your personal CDH number issued by the Scottish Golf Union. Prize Vouchers: Prizes awarded for Medals, Stablefords and other Internal Club Competitions will be advised direct to our Club Professional, Steven Rosie who will credit the value to your personal account with him. Awards in any Open Competitions we run will be by SGU Voucher. Open Competitions: Advice on Gents and Juniors Open Competitions at other Clubs can be found in a set of Binders marked with the appropriate month on the spine. These Binders can be found in the Gents Locker Room on the shelf immediately to the right of the Box used to receive Entry Payments enclosed within envelopes. Juniors Allowed to Play in Senior Medals: The future of Golf is with the Junior Members. As a Club we wish to encourage their progress and while we have arranged extra Competitions and Coaching for them, our Club has decided to allow any Junior Member who attains a Senior Handicap of 11 or better to participate in Gents Monthly Medals. They are not allowed into Matchplay Events other than the Club Championship and while participating in Medals they are not allowed to participate in any Sweeps. The idea is to allow Juniors to improve by playing with more experienced Members. We will not allow a group of three Juniors to go out together in a Senior Medal as this defeats our objective of introducing them to Gents Competition and gaining different experience to that obtained by playing in Junior Medals. Entry Monies: When entering Stirlingshire County Competitions such as their Spring & Autumn Meetings, Summer Foursomes, County Seniors and the County Championship, an Entry Sheet will be posted on our Notice Board and you should enter your name on it. Simultaneously, you should put the entry money in an envelope marked with your name and the Competition and deposit it in the Box below the Handicp Lists. The Match Secretaries will arrange to send off the completed forms to the County along with a composite cheque from the Club to cover all paid Entries. Please note that Glenbervie will NOT pay for any Member who has not supplied us with the Entry Money by the due date. Failure to pay internal Club Competition Entry Fees by the date stated on the Entry Poster/Sheet will also result in that Member being excluded from the Competition.

Finding a Game for Yourself: We endeavour to make Glenbervie a Friendly Club and would encourage you to take part in Competitions to meet other Members. Make yourself known to others and games will follow. Perhaps our Professionals might be able to point you in the direction of a game? Further Competition Information: All of Glenbervies Medal & Stableford Competition Scores must be entered into our Club Competition Computer which is situated in the corner of the Alexander Lounge. Failure to enter your score or return your card in the boxes situated under the Computer will result in your name being posted on the Competition Results Board in the Gents Locker Room. One warning is allowed but any subsequent warning given will result in that individual being banned from the next Wednesday or Saturday Medal as appropriate. This action is taken to ensure that the total numbers entering each Competition return their scores even if it is a No Return. The Match Secretaries have to balance the entries following each Medal to ensure the correct CSS is calculated for each round played and any imbalance can lead to several hours extra work to find the culprits! Please help us to get home early. In closing, we would say that your Match & Handicap Committee does it s best to encourage golf at all levels in the Club. It s a Members Club and it s up to you to make full use of it, get your monies worth and enjoy yourself along the way. We do our best to give rulings as required and run competitions for your benefit. Our decisions may not suit everyone but they are given in good faith and hopefully are for the good of the majority and the further enjoyment of all our Members. PS Remember if you have a query don t be afraid to ask as we are sure we will find somebody to give you the answer. Keep your eyes on the Notice Boards for advice on any forthcoming Competition or Event. We look forward to seeing you enjoying your golf at Glenbervie Golf Club. Additional Benefit to your Glenbervie Golf Club Membership Glenbervie is conscious that we must give best value for money possible to its Members. Accordingly, our Club has arranged reciprocal agreements with Dunblane New GC, Buchanan Castle GC & Stirling GC whereby Glenbervie Members have the opportunity to play 2 for 1 golf on weekdays.
