Regd. Charity No Comment The Vale Newsletter of Aylesbury Vale Golf Club (This is a private publication for Members of Aylesbury Vale Golf Club and may not be reproduced elsewhere in whole or in part, in any form, without the prior written permission of the Club.) Edition 37, May By request, the What s on This Month and Next section at the end of each Newsletter now includes the reserved tee times for competitions and home matches. Lady Captain s Day Saturday 13 May Open to ALL Club members (no green fee to pay by 5-day members). Entry fee 3 (entry form in bar). All proceeds to Willen Hospice. NB: Course closed for other play from 6:15am. News and Updates from the Club Management Course Update We have enjoyed good weather in early Spring and the lads had the greens rolling smooth and true. The 17 th tee came into play for Easter and the 2 nd tee will be ready to play any time now. If anything, the weather has been a little too dry and irrigation of the greens started this week. The last week of April has seen snow flurries and hailstorms but the forecast is for the weather to warm up soon. Winter Rules stop at cease play on 30 April, so no more preferred lies from 1 May. The greens will be hollow cored and dressed on Monday 8 May and Tuesday 9 May. The course will not be fit for competitive golf on these days, so avoid booking knockout matches for these two days. Normal play should resume on Wednesday 10 May. There will be some dressing still visible, but if everything goes to plan, with no major machinery breakages, then as in previous years the roll will still be relatively smooth and get better with each passing day. There was a midweek Medal published as 8-12 May but this will now be postponed until May due to the top dressing. Clubhouse. Tony has taken up a very well-deserved retirement and his will be a friendly face in the shop that will be sadly missed. Tony has worked wonders in the shop for many a year now and he will be truly hard to replace. I know that many of you have wished him all the best for the future, which may involve seeing more of his family in Florida if plans come to fruition.

Lady Captain s Day As both tees are in use at 08:30 this means that the course is closed to all from 06:15 to 08:30 on Saturday 13 May. However, Jane offers all a warm invitation to sign up for Lady Captain's Day and enjoy the competition. Following the round Heinz will serve a combination of chicken curry, lasagne and mixed sandwiches from the upstairs lounge. Please tick the sheet in the downstairs bar by the end of Sunday 7 May if you require catering. Heinz will make his orders on Monday 8 May based upon the number of ticks. Please be aware that as he will be serving the food from the upstairs lounge the downstairs kitchen will be closed. The presentation will follow in the upstairs lounge. Sundowners. The 'unofficial' Sundowner rollup begins on Thursday 4 May. The main eight weeks of Sundowners begin on Thursday 25 May. Car Park We have had problems on some days where the staff car park is getting so full that an emergency vehicle would struggle to get right up to the clubhouse and turn around. We have therefore had to have a re-think. We are getting some new signs made up and there will be four disabled parking bays located immediately adjacent to the Captains parking spaces. These will be made available for any blue badge holders. The advantage of these spaces is that you can drive a buggy right up to them on the grass and hence do not have to carry your clubs any distance. The signs for these and the Captains spaces will be located within the half granite golf balls. Once these signs are in place we would ask that no one, except for staff, park up at the clubhouse Chris Wright Rules of Golf Members recently had a situation where a ball was in a rabbit scrape but the player was not able to make a stroke because of a bush: a. Could he take relief from the rabbit scrape with no loss of shot, or b. Should he take relief from an unplayable lie in the bush, with a loss of stroke/s? The R&A was consulted, ruling that: 25-1b/19. Ball Lies on a Mound Made by a Burrowing Animal; Impracticable to Make Stroke Due to Bush Q: A player s ball lies under a bush and it is clearly impracticable for the player to make a stroke at it. However, the ball lies on a mound made by a burrowing animal. Is the player entitled to relief without penalty under Rule 25-1b? A: Under the Exception to Rule 25-1b a player may not obtain relief from an abnormal ground condition if it is clearly impracticable for him to make a stroke due to interference by something other than such a condition. Therefore, in the circumstances described, the player is not entitled to relief. Rules of Golf Local Rule Cancelled The Club had a Local Rule for the Winter that preferred lies are permitted on closely mown areas; this Local Rule was cancelled on 1 May. 2

Tip of the Month from your Head PGA Professional, Russell Phillips Are you struggling with your short range pitch shots around the green? Quite often it is hard to trust a lofted wedge to do its job and pitch the ball high and controlled over a short range. It is important to create a wellcontrolled ball strike. To do this you need to accelerate through the ball with your hands, don t let the hands flick the club though, instead push your hands through ahead of the clubhead. To create acceleration rather than deceleration, make sure you push the hand through more than you have taken it back. Try it out on the chipping area! From Crazy World of Golf Helen Exley Lessons for Ladies (1) by Russell Phillips Lady Members (Grouped) I will be organising some ladies only group lessons to help improve your game. The ladies grouped session will vary each week on long game, short game and course management (weather dependent). They start on Tuesday 9 May and will go on for five weeks, starting at 2pm. If you wish to come to one session please let me know and it will cost 12. If you want to come to all five sessions it will cost 40 and must be paid for at the first session. Please let Russell know on if you are interested. Lessons for Ladies (2) by Russell Phillips Here Come The Girls (New to Golf) This is a relaxing group session for any ladies looking to take up golf. The Here Come the Girls scheme is designed to get you to play all areas of the game and give you a start into golf. We visit the course, driving range, chipping area and putting green along the way. Golf is not only a great sport but it is an opportunity to meet new people, it is great for your health and highly rewarding when you do it right! The Here Come the Girls course lasts for six weeks and each week the lessons last between an hour and an hour and a half. You do not need to have your own golf clubs or gear to start. The first six weeks costs 80 and includes your very own first club! The sessions are on Sunday afternoons at 4:15 and start this weekend. To book yourself on this please contact Russell on

Lessons by Russell Phillips PERFORMANCE PACK (New) Are you looking to improve performance this year? Looking to get the edge this year and perform well against friends and in competitions? This summer I m putting together a set of lessons to give you the edge when playing on the course. I will be highlighting the areas that need improvement and giving you tests and drills that will iron out those bad shots. There will not be any major changes to your current swing, instead I will be looking to get the best results from your current swing! Full Performance Pack includes Ways to analyse your game six hours of drills and performance coaching on and off the course three hour lead up to Club Championships pack Members 250 Non-members 300 Small Performance Pack includes Ways to analyse your game four hours of drills and performance coaching on and off the course Members 140 Non-members 175 The aim is to get your performance pack completed by August To book yourself on this please contact Russell on Holes-in-One! Many congratulations to two players for scoring a hole-in-one during the month and becoming the first winners of the Hole in One Cup: - Roger White at the 17 th hole during the Burcott Trophy on 8 April, and - Steve Montague at the 2 nd hole during the Medal on 9 April. Both have been pleased to receive their complimentary Hugo Boss watches. A Word from the Men s Captain Men My wife was a hooker, I was a slicer, so when we tee d off we never met again till we made the green, but ladies and gentlemen, we have been cured. After many years we thought this is stupid, so we arranged a few lessons with el Tel (the Bunyan) - what a difference those few lessons made. Now I have to put up with my 4

charming wife all the way round! So if you have the same irritating problem sort it out, we have two very good Pros who happen to know what they are talking about. What a busy month April was. Firstly, many congratulations to the Scratch Team for beating The Bedfordshire 3:2. We also had two mid-handicap matches, but lost both unfortunately (at home to The Bedfordshire (1:4) and away to Pavenham 2:3). My highlight of the month was an amazing hole in one by Roger White. I m sure I saw a smile, or was it wind! This was achieved during the Burcott trophy, so Roger is the first holder of the new hole in one board. OMG his appearance on the board lasted less than 24 hours, for during the April Medal Mr Montarge aka Steve Montague holed out on the 2 nd. What on earth is going on? Is Luke making the holes bigger? Keep it straight. Andrew Bond The Winter knockouts - both weekend and midweek - have all been completed and congratulations go to both winners and runners up. The Midweek singles knockout was won by Steve Willet,t who defeated George Cowley, while the pairs was won by Richard Braithwaite and Barry Stanley who beat Steve Willett and Jon Clements. The Weekend Singles saw Alan Connell defeat Mark Hughes, while Michael and Andrew Pearce won the pairs with victory over Adrian King and Dale Ransberger. The Burcott Trophy saw father and son duo Jon and Tom Read take the honours with an aggregate score of 73 points. Runners up on countback were Alex Nebbitt and Paul Talbot. Eighty four players took part in the April monthly Medal and, in Division 1, John Barker came out on top with a nett 69. Men s Captain Andrew Bond came second a shot behind, with Elton Carter a further shot back in third. Andy Ashcroft was victorious in Division 2 with a nett 73, two shots clear of Graham Findlay and Dave Gaskell. Phil L'Aiguille was the winner in Division 3 with a nett 72. Dave Stonhill (nett 73) was second with Tony Foster (nett 74) in third place. The Easter Cup saw Andy Frankum score a fine 40 points to take the honours, with Mickey Parslow (39 points) taking second on countback from Lee Sarmple. 6 Seniors A Word from the Seniors Captain Well! What a busy first month it has seemed to be for me as Captain; probably the same for all previous Captains, but it certainly comes as a shock to be organising and playing so much golf I must add that it is a very pleasurable shock! We have enjoyed some great weather this month until the last few days. This has been reflected in the large turnouts for Captain s Competitions, Medal (1) and the Summer Six (1). A big thank you to Luke and his team for the excellent state of the course; I have heard so many compliments, from both members and visitors, on the quality of the greens especially on how true they are. Vice-Captain & Seniors Committee. I am much relieved and very much delighted that the Vice-Captain post will soon be filled (officially). Thank you to Dave Simons for agreeing to stand and help see me through my year. Larry Goddard has agreed to take on the vacant Member s Post on the Seniors Committee. The appointments are likely to be confirmed at the Seniors Committee on 17 May. We will then have a complete Committee for 2017 and can then get down to the real business of improving your golf experience what we are there for! Competitions. Our two major competitions this month Medal(1) and Summer Six(1) - ended in tight finishes, both having to be decided on countback. Congratulations to Dave Simons in the Medal and Bob Bacon in the Summer Six; commiserations to Mickey Parslow and John Lloyd for being pipped at the post. Matches. At the start of the year, Jim Mulhearn challenged me to beat his record of losing the first 15 games. I rose to the challenge and lost the first match (Leighton Buzzard Away), sadly I have failed to continue meeting this challenge. We won against Beadlow Manor (Home), Mount Pleasant (Home), Wavendon (Away) but lost against Weston Turville (Away) always a hard game to win. Many thanks go to the teams for these victories. Nearly all who have played in these matches have either won or drawn at least one match. Congratulations and thank you to the winners: Larry Goddard, Mike Samuel, Keith Loxton, Bob Hutley, Tom Hobbs, Bob Phillips, John Parmenter, Dave Needs, Peter Codrai, Peter Nightingale, Mike Bishop, Ian Hook, Steve Waters, Keith Minor, Bev Hughes, Terry Neve, and Hugh Frood (why is he always last on my lists sorry Hugh). Thank you to so many for signing up to play in matches, your continued support is very much appreciated. Firstly, I would like to congratulate the winners of the Winter knockouts: 7-day mixed Natalie Rendle and Harry Bond, 5-day singles Anne Bridges, 5-day mixed Jean Barnett and Adrian Fallon, 5-day pairs Jean Barnett and Kath Scott. Well done and thank you to all who participated. The Summer knock-outs are well underway, good luck to all who have entered and please ensure your game is played before the closing date. Pat Banister pipped Anne Bridges at the post to win the Winter Eclectic for the second year running. Jane Codrai and Vivien Craker won the Australian Spoons with 35 points and the Coronation Foursomes was won by Danka Lawson and Jean Edwards with 40 points, closely followed by Jean Barnett and Kath Scott with 38 points. The April mid-week Stableford was won by Jean Edwards, beating Danka Lawson by one point. There were some good scores in the 30+ competition which Jan Rolls won with 39 points. Gina Royffe was second with 36 points, a great result after all the practice she has put in this winter. The monthly Stableford saw a great turnout of ladies and was won by Jackie Boden with 41 points, beating Jane Codrai on countback also with 41 points. Well done Mary Williamson, third with 40 points and I must mention Jan Chambers who got 39 points, a handicap cut but no prize money! Well done Jean Edwards on winning the April mid-week Medal and Kath Scott for winning the weekend Medal. A big thank you to the 88 people who turned up on a freezing cold day to play in Annette s Hat. Together with some donations from people who were unable to play we raised 305 for Breast Cancer Care. The winners were Mickey Parslow, Bob Parish, Andy Pearce and Micky Pearce with 94 points. I would like to remind everybody of Lady Captain s day on 13 May. Please put your name up in the bar and tick if you require food (five-day members can play without paying a green fee). We will need prizes for sponsored holes (sheet in bar) and the raffle. The entry fee is 3.00 for all members and all the money will go to our chosen charity, Willen Hospice. There are some great team and individual prizes, so if you play well please try and stay for the presentation. The list is up in the ladies cloakroom for Invitation Day and there is a lot of interest in this event. There will be food and prizes on the day and we hope that as many of you as possible will take advantage of this special occasion to bring a friend along to play our fantastic golf course. If you are unable to play but would like to help at either of the above events, please advise someone on the Ladies Committee. I would like to make the Ladies section aware of the AVGC info group on Facebook. To join type AVGC info group into the search bar, this will take you into the AVGC page ; click the join group button and all future posts will be there for you to read and enjoy. Jane Codrai 7
