5 5 Amateur Championship Little Mill s Hyland wins 2011 Amateur title FORT WASHINGTON, Pa. Michael Hyland s only 32 years of age, but his golfing career came full circle in the 111th Amateur Championship final at Manufacturers G&CC. Hyland established his career in 2000 with a victory in the Golf Association of Philadelphia Amateur. He turned professional shortly thereafter only to return to the amateur ranks in He added his name to a select group, defeating Stephen Hudacek, III of Glenmaura National GC, 1- up, in the 36-hole final for his second J. Wood Platt Trophy. Hyland is the 17th individual to win two or more Amateur titles and the first to do so since Andy Thompson turned the task in J. Wood Platt holds the record with seven crowns. I never thought it would happen again. In these things you get old quick, said an emotional Hyland of Marlton, N.J. If you look at the trophy there are so many great champions on there. To have my name on there twice is unbelievable. Said Hudacek, 23, competing in his first Amateur final, It s a real confidence builder for me. I ve always thought of myself as a pretty good player but now I know I can compete with the really elite guys in the Philadelphia area. It s been a thrill. This is my favorite tournament of the year. The championship match resembled Hyland s rollercoaster decade. A blazing hot putter helped the affable Hyland forge a 5-up advantage after 15 holes. Some rough patches ensued as Hudacek whittled and whittled away at Hyland s lead before finally drawing even after 32 holes with back-toback birdies. Hyland immediately responded, though, with consecutive birdies of his own to go back to 2-up before equaling a Hudacek par on No. 18 (par 5, 460 yards) to secure the victory. It s the hardest tournament I play in all year, said Hyland. I stayed calm all week and let the other younger guys get upset. This is such a grind playing 36 holes each day. As stated, Hyland controlled the contest early. He was 5-under par aggregate after 14 holes and 5-up in the match when momentum left his side. Reaching yet another par 5, No. 15 (537 yards) in two Hyland was 6-under on the par 5s today Little Mill Country Club s Michael Hyland he registered a three-putt par. The scorecard read halves for both players, but, in essence, Hyland lost that hole after squandering a birdie chance. The result proved a foreshadowing of things to come. Hyland s putter went frigid, real fast. Meanwhile, Hudacek won No. 16 (par 4, 433 yards) with a routine par and No. 18 (par 5, 460 yards) with a nicely played birdie from short of the green. Hyland three-putted 18 after reaching it in two and held a 3-up lead at the break. On the final hole, both players found the fairway, but Hudacek, who has a very low ball flight, couldn t elevate his approach enough to hit the upper green. Hyland overshot the putting surface by a yard with his second shot but nestled a chip onto the green to 15 feet. Hudacek, whose chipping struggled at times, came up short with his third stroke and then missed a lengthy birdie try. Hyland s gentle birdie effort stopped inches from the cup.

6 6 Amateur Championship Little Mill s Meisenzahl tops 2011 Am. Qualifier FORT WASHINGTON, Pa. Mike Meisenzahl s opening qualifying round in the 111th Amateur Championship was moving comfortably along at Manufacturers G&CC he was even par thru six holes when it became that day. In a flash, the round went from mundane to extraordinary as Meisenzahl carded a spectacular 5-under 66. Pretty sensational considering it was his first-ever trip to Manufacturers G&CC. Difficult afternoon conditions, occasional rain, wind and the grind of a 36-hole qualifier, slowed the 23-year-old down at North Hills CC (1-over 72), but it didn t stop Meisenzahl from earning medalist honors and the No. 1 match play seed. He finished the two rounds of the Amateur Championship Qualifier at 4-under-par 138, two shots clear of second-place finishers Robert Galbreath, Jr. of Huntingdon Valley CC and Matt Mattare of Saucon Valley CC. I have nothing other to say than it feels great, said Meisenzahl, a Medford, N.J. resident. I talked a lot with my dad that I just wanted to get a good number in the house. My goal was even par. I made a couple good up-and-downs early and then the putter got hot. All of a sudden I started hitting it real close and giving myself opportunities for birdie. I left myself almost the easiest birdie putt on every green. It is a four-day event that distinguishes the best Amateur golfer in the Philadelphia region. Two qualifying events, as well as pre-existing player exemptions, determine the Amateur Championship field. On the event s first day, more than 130 players compete in a 36-hole qualifier to earn one of 32 spots in a match play draw. Two of those 32 players then must advance through four rounds of golf to gain a spot in the Amateur Final, which traditionally takes place on the day prior to Father s Day. The Final also coincides with the third day of the U.S. Open. Philadelphia Cricket Club s Albert H. Smith captured the first Amateur Championship by defeating J.D. Winsor of Merion Cricket Club in 37 holes at Bala Golf Club. The event s format switched to medal play in J. Wood Platt went on to win two consecutive Amateurs under that format. His brother William Zimmer Platt earned the 1940 title at Philadelphia Cricket Club by being the only competitor to finish all 72 holes. The event s format reverted back to match play the following year. The Amateur Championship wasn t contested from because of World War II. Overall, 36 courses have served as host sites. Prominent Philadelphia amateurs such J. Wood Platt, Harold B. McFarland, Max Martson, John Dyniewski, William Hyndman, III, Chris Lange, O. Gordon Brewer, Jr., Buddy Marucci and R. Jay Sigel all have their names etched on the Association s most coveted championship. They include J. Wood Platt, Harold B.
