3 The Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) remains focused on ful filling the mission established by its founding fathers more than 100 years ago: preserve, protect and promote the game of golf in the Philadelphia region. The game of golf and its traditions and future are central to all that we do and has remained the one constant in a world that moves quicker and evolves faster each year. The Golf Association of Philadelphia constantly strives to add benefits and value to each of its Member Clubs and Individual Members. Member Clubs are entitled to participate in the Annual Survey; the Club Insurance Program; the Computer Assistance Program; receive course ratings; have national representation with various golfing organizations throughout the country and access to the Tournament Pairing Program software. Individual Members are entitled to handicap computations; attend educational seminars and meetings; a subscription to the Golf Association of Philadelphia newsletter; the right to receive discounts and deals from the Member s Advantage Program; and access to the GAP Team Matches and other GAP Championships. ***** This year was a banner season for the Golf Association of Philadelphia with many wonderful, and at times, historic highlights. Perhaps the most remarkable feat of 2007 was ay Thompson of Overbrook GC s sweep of the four Major Senior events. Anyone who has played tournament golf knows how hard it is to win, not to mention doing so as the favorite. Thompson survived a six-hole playoff in the Warner Cup (Gross); took the Chapman Cup (Gross) on his home course with a pair of spectacular late up-and-down par saves and then rallied from two strokes back with two holes to go for the Senior Amateur Championship title. (He also earned the Senior Silver Cross Award given to the player with the lowest aggregate scores in the Warner Cup, Chapman Cup and Senior Amateur). Obviously, as a result of all those spectacular finishes, Thompson completed his 2007 resume as a runaway winner of the Senior Player of the Year with a record 740 points. Junior competitor obert Galbreath, Jr., of Huntingdon Valley CC also earned a spot in the Golf Association of Philadelphia annals by equaling Meredith Jack s record of three Junior Boys Championship victories. emarkably, Galbreath, Jr., is only 16 years old and still has a year of Junior eligibility remaining in search of an unprecedented fourth title. Jack recorded his run from This year s William Hyndman, III Player of the Year Award went to Michael McDermott of Merion GC on the strength of winning performances in the Patterson Cup and Silver Cross. Junior wise, it was obert obertson of Sunnybrook GC taking that division s Player of the Year behind a spectacular Top 5 effort in the Open Championship. Special congratulations to award winners Stan Friedman of Bala GC, the Distinguished Service Award winner; Joseph Tyrrell of Spring Ford CC, the Volunteer of the Year; and Bobby Arthur of Tavistock CC, the Junior Sportsman of the Year. The Association is especially grateful to Bent Creek CC, olling Green GC and Sandy un CC for hosting two events a piece in As mentioned before, it is the commitment to the game of golf from our Member Clubs that allows your Association to perform at the highest levels. These 135 Clubs allow us to host our 64 events and 66 days of tournament golf for you, our Members. We are currently reviewing some new and exciting ideas for 2008 and once again express our heartfelt appreciation to all who better the game of golf in Philadelphia. 4 Each golfing season throughout Philadelphia, and the world, provides new challenges. The 2007 Golf Association of Philadelphia season challenged all who competed while providing an opportunity to challenge the game on the finest collection of Member Clubs in the world. While a season would not be complete in Philadelphia without an opportunity for all ages and skill levels to test their games in competition, the GAP continued efforts and fostered new endeavors to educate, assist and develop Clubs and Individual Members. The season began in early March at Waynesborough Country Club, where the Association hosted its third President s Council. As in the past, national speakers discussed timely topics which in 2007 reaffirmed current societal trends in clubs and offered perspective on how to ensure your club stays ahead of the curve. Aside from the educational value of the program, this event provides a networking opportunity for club officers. In April, the Association hosted a social gathering as the first step to unite the many key groups in Philadelphia golf. epresentatives from the Course Superintendents Association, Club Managers, Club Owners, amateur and professional Golf Associations, youth and scholarship organizations and more met at Philadelphia Country Club to develop the working relationships needed to ensure the success of the game in Philadelphia. This initial effort laid the groundwork for a working meeting on Nov. 1 where the various groups will discuss the struggles key to their industry and allow the groups to work together for a better and stronger game of golf in Philadelphia. The Golf Association of Philadelphia is committed to working with these groups to provide the greatest opportunity to reverse the current trends of decreasing rounds here in Philadelphia. This Nov. 17 th, the Association will again conduct a College Golf Seminar. Selecting the right college is stressful for the whole family, parents and kids. This seminar provides an opportunity for junior golfers and parents throughout the region to learn about the day-to-day activities of a college golfer. Speakers will also review the process and provide information to assist in the difficult task of selecting the right college from a golf perspective. While the Association works to assist Member Clubs and the individual in Philadelphia, we remain focused on provided the best possible competitions. It is these competitions that highlight the Association and those who participate in them. While managing a full schedule of 64 events, the Association also provided administrative assistance at the 62 nd U.S. Blind Golf Association National Championship at Edgmont CC. On paper, it was an additional two tournament days, but in reality it was an opportunity for all participating volunteers and staff to refocus on the joy the game provides. On back-to-back beautiful Philadelphia days, nearly 40 blind golfers proved that golf is truly a wonderful game. I have enjoyed many tournament days in recent years, but no event sparked my interest in the game like this championship. Witnessing the joy of a well struck shot as a player and coach worked their way around the course was an experience all golfers should enjoy. As the season comes to a close, I would like to thank the many individuals who make this Association a success. Each event is a working effort between Member Club officials, golf professionals, course superintendents, club staff, GAP volunteers and the Association staff. Together we have written another year of Association history, enjoyed the game and preserved the traditions created by our golfing forefathers. It is truly an honor serving the game and leading the Golf Association of Philadelphia, Your Association. 5 The Golf Association of Philadelphia financial results for the year ending Nov. 30, 2006 has been audited by the accounting firm Mallie Faconiero & Company, LLP. This past year the Association performed a review of accounting services and elected to retain Mallie Falconiero & Company, LLP, to perform audit services for both 2006 and We want to thank our previous audit firm, Zelenkofske, Axelrod LLC for their many years of service to the Association. For the year ended Nov. 30, 2006, net income was $148,187. Operating revenue increased 6.8 percent to $1,479,969 primarily due to the continued increase in tournament participation. The Association has always been diligent about expenses, which rose 2.1 percent to $1,331,782. These expenses are largely administrative and personnel costs, tournament awards and handicap services. A complete copy of the audited Financial Statements will be made available to any Member Club upon written request. Committee: Daniel B. Burton Jack C. Endicott J. Kenneth Croney ichard P. Meehan, Jr. The Finance Committee oversees investments, reviews the annual budget and monitors the monthly financial reports prepared by the Association. Investments are in one- to two-year government securities, FDIC insured certificate of deposits and money market funds. In 2007, the Association adopted an updated cash management program that minimized holding funds in both non-interest bearing or low-rate bank accounts and moved cash to U.S. Government money market funds paying more attractive rates. The 2008 budget will continue to reflect the conservative stewardship of the Executive Committee. We thank the Member Clubs for their continuous support of the Association and appreciate the effort of the GAP staff and Executive Committee members who make this success possible. Committee: obin S. McCool William B. Weihenmayer The Communications Committee oversees the Association s publicity development. The Association complemented its revamped Web site with a new Magazine as the organization s two primary communication vehicles. The Golf Association of Philadelphia Magazine was created in July when the Philadelphia Golf Magazine abruptly ceased operations. The Golf Association of Philadelphia Magazine was published twice and offered Members a high-end glossy, color publication covering the organization s tournaments and happenings. The Web site also continued to provide Members and Member Clubs with daily tournament coverage; Association news; fitness and Turfgrass information; and championship videos, among other materials. Also, new this year, individual and team GAP Team Matches statistics were made available and sortable by club and categories. In addition, live scoring for the GAP Team Matches Playoff and Challenges was available for the first time. Coverage wise, all 64 of the Association s tournaments received media exposure either via the Web or print (local/ national newspapers and magazines). In addition, the Association expanded its coverage with e-revision updates and its monthly Web-based Greenside with GAP newsletters. The organization produced and published the annual Yearbook and Media Guide; Schedule Book; Junior Newsletter; Tournament Day posters; the GAP Team Matches booklet and various Schedule posters. 6 Committee: obin S. McCool A. Fred uttenberg William B. Weihenmayer The responsibility of the Membership Committee is to review and recommend potential applicant clubs for inclusion into the Golf Association of Philadelphia. The Membership Committee also reviews and forwards applications for einstatement to Amateur Status to the United States Golf Association. In 2007, 12 clubs solicited membership information. The Membership Committee recommended three clubs and the Executive Committee approved: Five Ponds Golf Club, Warminster, Pa. Mercer Oaks Golf Course, West Windsor, N.J. Woodstone Golf Club, Danielsville, Pa. A total of 15 applicants for einstatement to Amateur Status was received, processed and forwarded to the USGA for its approval. Committee: Dr. Thomas G. Frazier Andy M. Karff Frank E. utan, IV William H. Iredale Brian P. Kelly Christopher J. Terebesi The Member Services Committee continuously reviews current services provided to Member Clubs and individuals while exploring the addition of other valuable programs. Forefront this year was the expansion of the Club Scoresheet Program. This program offers Member Clubs the opportunity to purchase professionally designed tournament headers, scoresheets, summary boards and other materials for club events. Each item is specially designed per club specifications. Cost is priced based on the number of sheets printed. Also, the Member Services Committee oversees the implementation of the annual Member Club Survey. This year marked the 23 rd year the Golf Association of Philadelphia has teamed with Hilger Flick & Co., to offer participating clubs and their boards more than 90 pages of valuable information to use throughout the year and at budget time. This year, a total of 72 clubs participated. In March of 2007, the Association held the third annual Presidents Council at Waynesborough CC. The Presidents Council was created to gather Member Club presidents and managers to discuss pertinent industry topics. Presenters were Bill McMahon, Chairman of the McMahon Group, Inc., who spoke on Societal Trends Affecting the Club Industry; Bob Labbance and Patrick White of Notown Communications, who touched on the topic of The Do s and Don ts of Storing and Maintenance of Historical Documents; and ick Coyne, President of Club Mark Corporation, who talked about Setting Up Your Membership eplenishment Program. Additionally, the Computer Assistance Program (CAP), which just completed its fifth year, also is a Member Services benefit. The CAP places computer hardware and the GHIN Handicapping/TPP software in participating Golf Association of Philadelphia Member Clubs. New computers were rotated in for older ones at 26 clubs this year. The Member Services Committee is continuing to research further opportunities that would continue to enhance amateur golf in the Philadelphia region. Golf Association of Philadelphia Annual eport 6

7 Committee: Dr. Thomas G. Frazier Andy M. Karff Frank E. utan, IV *Brian Gillespie Brian P. Kelly Christopher J. Terebesi William H. Iredale obin S. McCool *non-executive committee member The Golf Administration Committee administers and reviews all tournaments and procedures; selects honorary team representatives and focuses on increasing ules of Golf knowledge amongst staff members, the Executive Committee and volunteers. Golf administration is the most visible organizational service and it is the most demanding on our Member Clubs. This year the Golf Association of Philadelphia administered 64 tournaments over 66 days. Take into account we request each Member Club to host at least one tournament every two years and those events become a major sacrifice for both the facility and its Members. I want to personally thank each of our 135 Member Clubs for doing their part and especially highlight the efforts of Bent Breek CC and St. Davids GC for each hosting two events this year. On the course, it was the individual performances of senior rookie ay Thompson of Overbrook GC and junior obert Galbreath, Jr. of Huntingdon Valley CC that proved historic. Thompson, 55, became the first individual to sweep all four Major Senior Tournaments, the Warner Cup (Gross), Chapman Cup (Gross), Senior Amateur Championship and the Senior Silver Cross. Galbreath, Jr., became just the second junior in the 93-year history of the Junior Boys Championship to win three Junior titles. Galbreath, 16, still has a year of Junior eligibility left and will look to top the mark set by Meredith Jack of Merion Cricket Club in Also, of special note, Senior wise, was the play of Thomas Bartolacci, Jr., of Saucon Valley CC; O. Gordon Brewer, Jr., of Pine Valley GC; David Brookreson of Huntingdon Valley CC and obert Ockenfuss of Indian Valley CC. All four qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur at Flint Hills National GC in Andover, Kansas and all four advanced to the match play portion of that National Championship a testament to the Senior talent in the Philadelphia area. Team wise, Commonwealth National GC s top unit captured its first-ever GAP Team Matches plaque with a surprising victory in the Playoff over squads from Huntingdon Valley CC, Llanerch CC and Philadelphia Cricket Club. Yardley CC also added to its reputation, taking its seventh Team Championship and second in as many years at olling Green GC in late June. Special congratulations to all our champions and, in particular, to our three players of the year: Thompson, the Senior Player of the Year; Michael McDermott of Merion GC, the William Hyndman, III Player of the Year and obert obertson, the Junior Player of the Year; for a season of outstanding play. The 2008 Schedule contains another fantastic assortment of tournaments for all ages and skill levels on a magnificent variety of courses. 8 Committee: E. Gerald Hurst Andy M. Karff A. Fred uttenberg The Handicap Services Committee implements the USGA handicap procedures; schedule revisions; reviews member/non-member handicap services and course ratings. The USGA Handicap System and USGA Course and Slope atings are essential in making the game of golf enjoyable and competitive for players at every level. The Handicap Services Committee and its ever-valuable volunteers are responsible for making this happen at the Golf Association of Philadelphia s 135 Member Clubs. Five teams consisting of GAP volunteer course raters rated approximately 1,290 holes adding up to 42 ratings in Serving their respective teams, the captains were Will Carr, obert Cragg, obert Harris, Jack Hoffman and Jack Francis. The GAP Course ating service is made up of 46 volunteers. Each of the Course ating volunteers deserves our recognition and thanks for their time and effort. As the season ends and the ratings are completed, the GAP Course ating eview Committee analyzes each rating to verify accuracy and comparability with the USGA standards to insure fairness and consistency with all Member Clubs. Tyler iggin, Director of Handicapping, and Cory eighard, Director of Course ating, each served our member clubs for all their GHIN and Tournament Pairing Program needs in iggin and eighard are also responsible for continuing the Computer Assistance Program (CAP), which provides a computer to each Member Club s staff to effectively calculate handicaps and professionally run tournaments. This was the fifth year of the CAP and Member Clubs will continue to have their computer replaced with a brand new one every four years. The CAP remains a great asset and also a unique and valuable service for our Member Clubs. In addition, a new service offered this year was the GAP Tournament Scoresheets, which GAP will design and print for any event. Our Member Club s were very pleased with the attractive new service and we look for it to continue to grow. The Handicap Services Committee would like to thank the GAP staff and all the volunteers who contributed to making our course rating and handicap programs successful in Applebrook Golf Club Brookside Country Club of Allentown Brookside Country Club Club at Morgan Hill, The Commonwealth National Golf Club Five Ponds Golf Club Heidelberg Country Club Lancaster Country Club Makefield Highlands Golf Club McCall Golf & Country Club Meadia Heights Golf Club Middletown Country Club Newport American Legion Country Club Northampton Country Club Olde York Country Club Old York oad Country Club Paxon Hollow Country Club Penn Oaks Golf Club Philadelphia Cricket Club (Militia Hill) Pickering Valley Golf Club Pilgrim s Oak Golf Course 2007 Course atings ancocas Golf Course eading Country Club ivercrest Golf Club & Preserve iverview Country Club unning Deer Golf Club Saucon Valley Country Club (Old Course) Seaview Marriott esort & Spa (36 Holes) Shawnee Inn & Golf esort (On the Delaware) Stonewall (Old & North courses) Tavistock Country Club Toftrees Golf Club Trenton Country Club Water Gap Country Club Waynesborough Country Club Whitemarsh Valley Country Club Whitford Country Club Woodcrest Country Club Woodstone Golf Club Wren Dale Golf Club Golf Association of Philadelphia Annual eport 8

9 Committee: *David Derminio *Michael Dougherty, Jr. ichard P. Meehan, Jr. In what seems to be a common year-to-year theme for the GAP s Junior Program, this season once again presented some of the most competitive, skilled and milestone-reaching junior golf in the area. Beginning with the 93rd running of the Junior Boys Championship at Cavaliers CC, obert Galbreath, Jr., of Huntingdon Valley CC narrowly knocked off obert obertson of Sunnybrook GC, 1-up, to win his third Junior Boys title. That landmark win, along with his Junior Boys titles from , placed Galbreath in the GAP record books as only the second player to accomplish such a feat in the program s history. Meredith M. Jack of Merion Cricket Club was the only other player to win three Junior titles, only he did it in consecutive fashion from 1914 to But obertson was able to take Junior Player of the Year honors from Galbreath, the Junior Player of the Year, after amassing a total of 515 POY points with victories at the Jock MacKenzie Memorial as well as the Francis X. Hussey Memorial. He also placed in the Top 5 in the Open Championship at Merion GC and the Top 15 in the Patterson Cup. In the 23rd Jock MacKenzie Memorial, obertson edged out J.. Fasy of Wilmington CC in a one-hole playoff after both players posted 1-under-par 71s in regulation. obertson also paired with fellow high school teammate Chip Culp of Philadelphia Cricket Club to edge out defending champions Galbreath and Eric Chipin of Philmont CC, to take home the 22nd Francis X. Hussey Memorial Championship by a stroke. Both attend Chestnut Hill Academy. In other Junior Programs news, Bobby Arthur of Tavistock CC earned the 2007 Junior Sportsmanship Award and ussell Hartung of Doylestown CC grabbed the 2007 Christman Cup and, as a result, the Harry Hammond Award. This season marked the first time the Harry Hammond Award was a 72-hole affair after the Jock MacKenzie Memorial was added to the contest. Hartung earned the award after posting the lowest aggregate score in the qualifying round of the Junior Boys Championship, the two rounds of the Christman Cup and the Jock MacKenzie Memorial. Andrew Lawson of Hershey s Mill GC and James Bea of Spring Mill CC joined Arthur and Hartung, in representing the Association at the 44 th Williamson Cup. The team placed third at the prestigious annual junior competition that features teams of four players from 10 regional and state associations in a one-day, 36-hole medal play competition. Not to be left forgotten, Zachary Dilcher of Hartefeld National won his second Junior-Junior Boys Championship in three years with a 2-up victory at Moorestown Field Club over a fierce opponent in Alex Kane of adley un CC. Currently, the Junior Program conducts tournaments for Juniors ages 14 and over, Junior-Junior ages and Pre-Juniors 10 and under. And for the fourth time, the Pre-Juniors had their own day of fun focusing on rules, etiquette and course conduct at Philadelphia Cricket Club this past July. Also, in an effort to help our Juniors look ahead to golf at the next level, the Association held its fourth annual College Golf Scholarship Seminar at Plymouth CC last November. Marc Thayer, Executive Director of the Junior College Scoreboard, Mike Dynda, the Men s Golf Coach at Drexel University and ick McCall, the Men s Golf Coach at Wesley College, spoke to the 100-plus students and their parents at the event. Topics ranged from academic requirements to scholarship regulations to the schedule and time demands of a collegiate golfer at all levels. Once again, the Junior Program would not be where it is today without the GAP volunteers, Junior Coordinator Mike Sharpe and the clubs that gave up their facilities to allow these juniors to compete at such a high level. We look forward to seeing all of you next year, and wish you continued success in all your future endeavors. Golf Association of Philadelphia Annual eport 9 William B. Weihenmayer Terrence J. Sawyer *non-executive committee member (Far left) The Pre-Junior Tournament was held at Philadelphia Cricket Club s Flourtown Course. Youngsters went through a clinic on the ules of Golf as well as course etiquette and conduct before applying what they learned in a six-hole tournament. The Pre-Junior Tournament is for 8-10 year olds. (Left) obert Galbreath, Jr. of Huntingdon Valley CC (right) joined Meredith Jack of Merion Cricket Club as the only three-time winners of the Junior Boys Championship. He is presented the trophy by 2006 Champion Matt audenbush of Pine Valley GC.

10 For the academic year, 205 caddie-scholars received $800,000 in scholarship grants. Monetary awards ranged from $400 to $7,000, with an average grant of over $3,900. The Scholarship continues to remain focused on securing its future. The Lifetime Membership Program, the top tier of giving ($10,000 donation), continued to prosper this year reaching 261 members. Those donations are specifically earmarked for the Scholarship s endowment. The Matching Fund Program continued to provide additional funding to our caddie-scholars. Under this program, 30 colleges and universities have agreed to match up to a specific amount of the Platt Caddie Scholarship. For the current academic year these institutions awarded an additional $46,400 to 28 Platt Caddie-Scholars. Our Caddie Contact Program also continued to prosper in 2007, counting over 125 mentors to its ranks. The Caddie Contact Program aims to further aid our caddies by providing guidance in their chosen field of study. The success of the Scholarship is made possible through the generous donations of you, the Golf Association of Philadelphia members and the unequaled support of the organization s staff. We continue to experience a growth in the number of new caddie-scholar applicants, a testament to the support of caddie programs by our Association clubs. We will continue to promote and preserve the tradition of the caddie in the Golf Association of Philadelphia. 68 Matthew Flannery of Huntingdon Valley CC was recognized as the 2006 Francis C. 11 Committee: David M. Junkin, M.D. Brian Kelly Working with the United States Golf Association, GAP established the Philadelphia Local Area Youth Golf Program (PLAY Golf) seven years ago to provide support of community efforts in expanding access to the game of golf to urban and less fortunate youth. The Program provides a wide range of golf equipment and tournament play for some 3,500 young men and women in 16 youth golf programs in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. The capstone of the year s Program was the 2007 PLAY Golf Championship held on June 25 at McCall G&CC. A total of 67 local young men and women took part in the seventh annual tournament. This year, PLAY Golf again welcomed KPMG, the international network of professional firms providing audit, tax and advisory services, as a corporate sponsor of the tournament. KPMG provided 20 volunteers for the Championship and donated $1,500 for tournament expenses and the purchase of new golf equipment for the participating programs. The PLAY Golf Program gives KPMG a new avenue in which to contribute to the local community through the game of golf; their support and participation are greatly appreciated. Under the PLAY Golf umbrella, GAP also administers the Mary s Girls initiative, a unique golf development program for young ladies who do not have access to private clubs. Mary s Girls, which began in 2004, is named after the late Mary Ballen of Bala GC, an avid golfer and supporter of women s golf. The program provides female urban and community-based golfers with instruction and financial support to enable them to excel at the game and earn college golf scholarships. Its principal sponsors are the Ballen family and Women Golfers Give Back, an organization of leading women golfers in the Philadelphia area. In its fourth year, nine applications have been received. Grants will be reviewed and awarded before the end of the calendar year. In 2006, nine young women received a total of $13,000 in awards from Mary s Golf. The GAP thanks all the sponsors for their support of these programs that benefit promising golfers who might not otherwise have the opportunity to play the game. Junior Sportsmanship Award Bobby Arthur Tavistock Country Club The well-known pressures of competition and individual achievement have sometimes been known to work against the enjoyment of sport by its participants. But for Bobby Arthur, the 2007 Junior Sportsmanship Award winner, that statement could not be further from the truth. You just don t go out there to grind it out and live and die on every shot, said Arthur, 17, from Marlton, N.J. You also go out there to have fun and meet people. You always want to respect everybody on the golf course. And although the Tavistock CC member admitted to some struggles on the course early in his last season on the junior circuit, he carried that positive attitude throughout the year while advancing to the quarterfinals of the Junior Boys Championship and accepting an invite to be on the Williamson Cup team. It was nice to go out there as a team and compete, he said of his Williamson Cup experience. Everybody was rooting for each other and that s what I liked about it. We had a nice team. Even after the team lost its first-round lead to finish Golf Association of Philadelphia Annual eport 11 third, Arthur s team-first mentality only solidified the Association s decision to present him with the sportsmanship honor. Bobby Arthur s attitude on and off the course is widely considered the ethos of sport, said Mike Sharp, GAP s Junior Coordinator. It was easy to see why he would earn the Junior Sportsmanship Award. Arthur, who said this award came as a surprise, was pleased to be recognized by the Association with the accolade but he was still humble even after its presentation. There are so many good guys out there that are a joy to play a round of golf with that I didn t expect this for me, said the Cherokee High School senior. This was definitely a surprise. Arthur, who hopes to play on Tavistock CC s first team in the GAP Team Matches next spring, is looking forward to next season, his first away from the junior golf ranks. Not being a junior [golfer] next year should be different, he said, but it s something I m looking forward to.

He became involved with the Golf Association of Philadelphia in 1971 and served on the Executive Committee through During that time, he also was a Platt Caddie Scholarship Board Member. He remained with the Platt until 1986 but continues his support even today through the Lifetime Membership program and the aforementioned annual fundraiser. In his tenure at the Golf Association of Philadelphia, Mr. Friedman created and formed the Historical Committee that ultimately led Cto the book A Centennial Tribute to Golf in Philadelphia, written by James W. Finegan. He was a member at olling Green GC from and served on the club s Board of Directors for a time. He was also a key figure in the creation of the Francis X. Hussey Memorial Tournament, a better-ball event for Juniors, annually held at olling Green GC. Currently, Mr. Friedman plays his golf at Bala GC, where he s been a member since I was absolutely fractured when I found out, said Friedman. I m very touched. You don t do things and think you will get rewarded, especially, for something you love so much. 13 Alot has changed on the Golf Association of Philadelphia landscape in the past decade. From the introduction and yearly evolution of the Web site, to the growth and increase in the Association s member clubs, staff, tournaments and tournament fields. Expansion combined with change has been somewhat of a constant theme with the GAP. That is until you look at the heart of the Association: The volunteers. Their faces and devotion remain the same. J o s e p h Tyrrell, an 11-year GAP volunteer out of Spring Ford CC, has earned the 2007 Volunteer of the Year Award for his service and unwavering commitment to the Association and, above all, the game. Golf is a game for a lifetime and I just enjoy it just as much when I m playing as I do volunteering, said the soft-spoken 69-yearold from King of Prussia, Pa. The game means a lot to everybody and that s what I love about it. Volunteer of the Year Award He s always one of the first to show up at a tournament and never leaves the course without offering his help to the staff. Mark Peterson Executive Director Tyrrell has been a volunteer even longer than the Golf Association of Philadelphia s Executive Director, Mark Peterson, has been at the helm of the Association. Joe epitomizes what a GAP volunteer strives to be, said Peterson, who took office in He s always one of the first to show up at a tournament and never leaves the course without offering his help to the staff. Tyrrell, who retired in 2002 from a 33-year career as a lawyer for the Unisys Corporation, got into volunteering with the Association after Dick Nelson, a GAP Volunteer at the time and fellow member at Spring Ford CC who has since passed away, discussed volunteering with Tyrrell. I just heard him speak of volunteering and I thought, Hey I could do that, Tyrrell said. I wanted to give something back to the game and [volunteering] seemed like a good way to do it. The Golf Association of Philadelphia volunteer veteran, who joked Golf Association of Philadelphia Annual eport 13 JOSEPH TYELL that he had to count the number of volunteer shirts he owned to figure out how long he has been a volunteer, has primarily been a starter for the majority of his volunteer career. He s also been to a number of ules seminars and is set to become a ules Official this year as well. I like starting because it has a pace to it, said Tyrrell, who has worked events for every skill level of GAP competitions. When you re starting you get to send everybody off on their round and you get to meet all the players. It s fun. In 2007 alone, Tyrrell gave up his time to volunteer at everything from the Junior Boys Championship to the Caddie Tournament to the Patterson Cup and even the Open, spanning three states and hundreds of History 2006: Will Carr, Merion Golf Club 2007: Joseph Tyrrell, Spring Ford Country Club miles. It s all golf, said Tyrrell when asked which event was his favorite. The beauty of the game is that, at all levels, people can play it. I just wish more people would volunteer. Now that I m retired volunteering is basically my life. Added Tyrrell, I m going to try and live up to this award and hope to continue to be able to say Play away please. I m going to do this as long as I can and still give something back. It s quite an honor but I also know there are many others just as if not more deserving than I. This was completely unexpected. It was a total surprise.

17 Player of the Year Bios Amateur Player of the Year Merion GC s Michael McDermott Michael McDermott s spectacular final-round performance in the Joseph H. Patterson Memorial Cup propelled the 32-yearold to his fourth William Hyndman, III Player of the Year Award. McDermott, who surged to victory with a smashing 6-under-par 66 at Berkleigh CC, which along with Moselem Springs GC served as the Patterson Cup sites, earned prior POY titles in and McDermott s Patterson Cup victory also sent the Havertown, Pa., resident to his second Silver Cross Award (given to the player with the lowest aggregate score in the qualifying round(s) of the Amateur Championship and Patterson Cup). The Player of the Year Award is a prestigious recognition of an overall solid season, said McDermott. My goal in Senior Player of the Year Overbrook GC s aymond Thompson Thompson wins again. That sentence became synonymous with the 2007 Golf Association of Philadelphia Senior tournament season. Not surprisingly, it was ay Thompson of Overbrook GC earning the Player of the Year honors after sweeping the senior series and becoming the first to do so in the history of the Association. And although coming into the season it was suspected that former professional and 1972 GAP Amateur Champion would have success on the senior circuit, no one could have seen this coming, not even Thompson. I really didn t know what to expect when the year started, said the senior rookie. I thought I could be competitive but what I accomplished was way more than I expected. Thompson, who led in the Sr. POY point standings from wire-to-wire, grabbed his first senior win back in May after defeating long-time fellow competitor in Charles Buck Jones Junior Player of the Year Sunnybrook GC s obert obertson obbie obertson of Sunnybrook GC captured his first Junior Player of the Year title this season. obertson scored a total of 515 points in five tournaments. He nabbed two 2007 victories, one in the Francis X. Hussey Memorial with partner Chip Culp of Philadelphia Cricket Club, and a second in the Jock MacKenzie Memorial where he defeated J.. Fasy of Wilmington CC in a sudden-death playoff. He was the runner-up in the Junior Boys Championship where he fought his way to the final against obert Galbreath Jr. of Huntingdon Valley CC and turned in probably his top performance all season by forging a tie for fourth in the Open Championship at Golf Association of Philadelphia Annual eport 17 any season is to have a chance to win every tournament I enter and, in 2007, I put myself in that position from the GAP Mid.-Am. right through to the day of the Patterson Cup when I was able to capture that and the Silver Cross. McDermott finished the year with POY points, 76.6 points ahead of second-place finisher Chris Gallagher of Penn Oaks GC. In addition to the Patterson Cup and Silver Cross, the long-hitting McDermott also earned points with a thirdplace tie in the Middle-Amateur Championship; a secondround appearance in the Amateur Championship and as a qualifier for the Open Championship. He also qualified for his fifth U.S. Middle-Amateur Championship. Middle-Amateur golf is the ultimate challenge for us to balance our personal lives, careers and golf games. This year s award is even more special because 2007 was a year where I had so much going on in my business and personal life, added McDermott. With all the great players in GAP, I am honored to have come out on top and look forward to another exciting year in of Philadelphia Publinks GA in a six-hole, sudden-death playoff to take the Francis B. Warner Cup. Thompson s season-long tear included his 10th Overbrook GC Club Championship, a fantastic 2-under-par 68 for a Chapman Cup victory on his home track and a come-frombehind victory in the 37 th Senior Amateur Championship at Waynesborough CC. The 55-year-old Thompson also won the Senior Silver Cross Award (given to the player with the lowest aggregate score in the Warner Cup, Chapman Cup and Senior Amateur) by 12 shots. Merion GC. He traversed Merion s historic East Course under treacherous conditions in a splendid 5-over par for two rounds. obertson also registered an impressive tie for eighth in the Patterson Cup. The Philadelphia Open was a memorable tournament for me this season. I was very pleased with the way I stayed in there, said obertson. I loved seeing my name up on the top of the leaderboard with [assistant professional] Mark Sheftic from my club. In comparing his performance from last year to this year obertson commented, My mentality was so much different, fairways and middle of greens was my focus and it worked. I think that winning the club championship at Philadelphia Cricket Club [his second club] sparked my game and I was able to carry it throughout the summer. A few weeks ago obertson made a verbal commitment to Purdue University, his father s alma mater.

22 Amateur Championship June &16, 2007 Applebrook GC/White Manor CC (qualifying only) Philip Bartholomew was resolute en route to a 2&1 victory over Bill McGuinness of Tavistock CC for the 107th Amateur Championship title at Applebrook GC. MALVEN, Pa. Philip Bartholomew was fortunate to make the 107th Amateur Championship field a few weeks ago in a pre-qualifier at Ballamor GC. A fellow competitor three-putted the final hole to allow all the players sitting at 80, including Bartholomew, into the championship proper. At Applebrook GC (par 71, 6,765 yards), the 19-year-old Elon University sophomore turned that good fortune into history when he became the first member of Yardley CC, surprisingly enough, to forge his name onto the J. Wood Platt Amateur Championship trophy. Bartholomew and his big, loping, powerful swing defeated the steadfast Bill McGuinness, 47, of Woodbury, N.J., 2&1, in the 36-hole final. I have no idea [what to say], said a stunned Bartholomew. [Bill Boyle] three-putted the final green at Ballamor to just get me into this. I went into Monday and played two rounds holeby-hole and shot-by-shot. I was just trying to make the cut and trying to get into match play. And now I m here. It s unreal. I don t believe it. There are a lot great players in this field and to come out on top feels amazing. Tee box Defending champion: Kyle Davis, Fieldstone GC. Medallist: Chase Duncan (73WM-67AGC 140); Conrad Von Borsig (67 AGC-73 WM 140). Qualifiers: A 149 total (7-over par) advanced into match play, after a playoff. Storyline: Davis entered the Amateur looking to be the first repeat winner since Chris Lange went back-to-back in Applebrook was the site of match play, and as expected, offered a number of fantastic and taunt contests with 11 of 31matches reaching the final hole. In the end, it was up-and-comer Phil Bartholomew from Yardley CC and Bill McGuinness, a past Amateur champion from Tavistock CC, reaching the final. Yardley CC was established in 1928 and has produced a number of top-flight players in the annals of the Golf Association of Philadelphia, but Bartholomew became just the second club member to even make the final match. Last year, Paul ogowicz made it to the last day before falling to Kyle Davis. In this year s Championship Match, Bartholomew appeared well in charge, and on his way to a comfortable victory, he was 5-up after 25 holes, before McGuinness grinded out wins on holes Nos (holes 8-10) to close the deficit to two. It looked like it was going to get even more interesting on the 29th hole (No. 11, par 3, 121 yards) when McGuinness, who had the tee, knocked a wedge to five feet. Bartholomew followed and watched his ball go just long and against the back collar. However, Bartholomew, as he did all week with his solid short game, managed to knock in the 12-foot, downhill birdie. Maybe a little stunned, McGuinness missed his chance and went 3-down. Golf Association of Philadelphia Annual eport 22 See Amateur, page 23 (Left) Philip Bartholomew (right) of Yardley CC receives the J. Wood Platt Amateur Championship Trophy from President Dan Burton. (right) Bartholomew gets a hug from his father Phil. Bartholomew next recorded a two-putt par on No. 12 (par 4, 424 yards) and McGuinness failed to get up-and-down after coming up short of the green. It was just up against the collar. I put my weight on my front foot and played it left center, said Bartholomew of the 29th hole. That was huge for my confidence. McGuinness clawed back with wins on the 31st (No. 13, par 4, 453 yards) and 32nd (No. 14, par 4, 424 yards) holes with two pars Bartholomew had two bogeys in that span and cut the deficit to one when he drained a smooth 15-foot birdie from left of the flag on the 34th hole (No. 16, par 5, 577 yards). On the 35th hole (No. 17, par 3, 175 yards), both players just missed the green with 6-irons. McGuinness ball was six steps to the left and Bartholomew s was two paces in the fringe. McGuinness went first and his putt just peeked at the edge before stopping four feet past. (below, left) Bill McGuinness of Tavistock CC reacts after draining his 50-foot birdie chance on the par 5, 16th. That putt clinched a semifinal victory over Phil Arouca of Philadelphia Publinks GA. 23 From page, 22 stepped up and watched his try stop just outside of McGuinness mark. Bartholomew squeezed his comebacker in while McGuinness, needing a make to continue, watched his final putt lip out. I thought the match was going to 18, said Bartholomew. I m going to Oakmont [for the U.S. Open] tomorrow so being able to show my dad this trophy is pretty cool. McGuinness is a past Amateur Champion. He took the 1996 title with a, 2&1, victory over Chris Hoyle of Llanerch CC. I was just hoping to get to 18 [the 36th hole], said McGuinness about this year s final. This was beyond my expectations. In the first part of the second round, Bartholomew was in cruise control. He took the 19th (No. 1, par 5, 519 yards) and 21st holes (No. 3, par 4, 304 yards) with two birdies to build that 5-up advantage. Amateur Championship (Above, left) Chip Lutz watches his tee shot on the par 3, 11th hole during a playoff for the final two match play qualifying positions. (Above, right) Lutz receives congratulations from Gary Daniels and Oscar Mestre, Jr., after his pitching wedge resulted in a hole-in-one. It was Lutz s third career ace. When I was eating lunch there were images in my head of winning, said Bartholomew. I told myself we are even going into the next [18 holes]. When I was 5-up, I was in the zone. McGuinness, however, never gave in. He netted a birdie on the 26th hole (No. 8, par 5, 581 yards) and a par on the 27th (No. 9, par 3, 145 yards) to cut the deficit to three. The match headed to the back and final nine holes as it had finished in the morning, Bartholomew was 3-up. McGuinness then won the 28th hole (No. 10, par 5, 573 yards) with a par and Bartholomew couldn t get his third shot close after hitting it into the greenside fescue. Then Bartholomew made the putt on the 29th hole to stem the tide. Bartholomew initially took command of the final late in the first round when he won four of the last five holes to go from All Square to an eventual 3-up advantage. Both players were erratic throughout the initial round. The first five holes went back-and-forth with Bartholomew taking the opener and McGuinness answering right back each time. McGuinness pulled even on No. 8 with a conceded birdie after Bartholomew found trouble the entire length of the hole and then took a 1-up edge with a magnificent flop shot on No. 9. The two stood All Square on the 13th green when Bartholomew maybe hit the shot of his golfing career. He chipped in from over the back of the green, about 10 feet, for par to forge a halve. He then went on to take No. 14 after missing the green but knocking it to four feet on his chip McGuinness three putted and added No. 15 (par 3, 220 yards) with a two-putt par after McGuinness failed to get upand-down when coming up short with his tee shot. Bartholomew kept the pressure up with a birdie on No. 17 (par 3, 175 yards) after hitting a 7-iron to 10 feet and was conceded a three on No. 18 (par 4, 454 yards) when McGuinness pushed his second shot into the junk right of the waterfall (30 yards right of the green). 26 FLEETWOOD, Pa. Michael McDermott of Merion GC saved the best for last and carded nine birdies in his final round, including four birdies in a row on his final eight holes, to win both the 105 th Joseph H. Patterson Cup and Silver Cross Award. The two-time Middle- Amateur Champion (2001, 04) and two-time Silver Cross Award winner (2003, 07) took the 36-hole championship, split between Moselem Springs GC (par 70, 6,790 yards) and Berkleigh CC (par 70, 6,250 yards), with a 6-under-par 136 (70-66). I think I made all the eight-footers today that I have not made a chunk of this summer, said McDermott, who started his day at Moselem Springs GC with an even-par 70 before lighting it up in the afternoon at Berkleigh CC with a 6-under-par 66. Golf s a funny game. McDermott came into the Patterson Cup with a less than stellar performance on the prior day at the 103 rd Open Championship with a (78-77) 155. I was really excited for the Philadelphia Open, said the 32-year-old from Havertown, Pa., who was looking forward to playing the Championship at his home course. I felt like I was playing well going into it and I didn t. But somewhere inside I Joseph H. Patterson Memorial Cup Aug. 9, 2007 Berkleigh CC/Moselem Springs GC The Patterson Cup consists of two rounds of stroke play. Michael McDermott of Merion GC displays the Joseph H. Patterson Memorial Cup after his victory at Berkleigh CC/Moselem Springs GC. Tee box Defending champion: Stephen Arnold of Yardley CC. Storyline: Amateur Champion Philip Bartholomew of Yardley CC was looking to become the first player since James Kania of Overbrook GC in 1995 to sweep the Amateur/Patterson Cup titles. To this point of the season, it s been the year of Yardley CC with Bartholomew, Mark Miller taking the Open Championship and the club winning the Philadelphia Team Championship. Additional contenders included the steady Chris Gallagher of Penn Oaks GC, Chris Lange of Overbrook GC and Chip Lutz of Ledgeock GC, to name a few. Golf Association of Philadelphia Annual eport 26 sort of thought that I had enough to play well today. And play well he did. McDermott hung around the top of the leaderboard after his steady morning round with three birdies and as many bogeys at a Moselem Springs GC that played statistically more difficult than nearby Berkleigh CC. And when he got to Berkleigh, McDermott took advantage with a back-toback-to-back birdie start complemented by six additional birdies at the Kutztown-area club. My round [at Moselem Springs GC] was solid in the morning, McDermott said. When I got to Berkleigh I knew I had to shoot under par. I just didn t know how far. What was known was that Nathan Sutherland of Berkshire CC, who teed off in the third group, had completed his 36-hole endeavor with a 4-under-par 138 and that Chris Lange of Overbrook GC was threatening with the same score through 27 holes. I ve been playing [Berkleigh] since I was young, said the soon-to-be freshman at Miami University (Ohio). I m just comfortable with all the shots because I know what s out there. Although McDermott never took his eyes off the leaderboard, he maintained his focus, scored when he had to and did not make any mistakes, playing his final nine holes in 3-under par. I had never played Berkleigh before, he said. And when I saw that Chris Lange shot 4 under and that other people shot some good scores, I knew that other people would shoot low and that I need to try to keep going lower. Added Lange, I played well at Berkleigh but I missed a few short putts at Moselem. That was the difference. But McDermott knew what he had to do. I didn t get comfortable after making those birdies and that was important, he said. I kept making more [birdies] and was able to hold on coming down the stretch. McDermott finished with four straight pars to close out the round. See Patterson Cup, page 27 (left) Chris Lange of Overbrook GC sees his par putt to remain in contention on No. 8 at Moselem Springs GC slip past the hole. (above) Nathan Sutherland of Berkshire CC strikes his tee shot on No. 15 at Moselem. Both players tied for second place.

28 Philadelphia Open Championship Aug. 6, 2007 Merion GC The Open consists of two rounds of stroke play. (above) Mark Miller of Yardley CC sends his 40-foot birdie putt from the back, left-hand side of the 18th green at Merion GC (East Course) on its way. Miller sealed a victory in the 103rd Open Championship with his fourfoot par putt (right). ADMOE, Pa. Not even an errant step could keep Mark Miller of Yardley CC from the 103 rd Open Championship title and the biggest victory of his young, amateur career. Miller, 21, of Levittown, Pa., incurred a penalty stroke after moving his golf ball while searching for it in the right fescue on the 14 th hole (par 4, 418 yards) but somehow kept his senses for a career-defining triumph at the fabled East Course of Merion GC (par 70, 6,654 yards). Miller finished at even-par 140 for the 36 holes (69-71) to edge Mark Sheftic (rounds of 70-71), an assistant professional at Sunnybrook GC, and the remainder of the 72-player field, by a stroke. Miller s victory marked only the 12th time an amateur has captured the Open Championship. Chris Lange of Tee box Defending champion: John Quinn, Director of Golf, Links GC. Storyline: The golf course was the story as the beautiful and historic East Course of Merion GC held its first Open Championship since Phil Bartholomew of Yardley CC entered the tournament looking to be the first back-to-back winner of the Amateur/Open since Jay Sigel in eigning Open Champion Quinn was looking to be the first repeat winner since Pete Oakley did so in Overbrook GC was the last to do so in I didn t sign up because I didn t think I could win. I knew I just had My game plan wasn t going to change regardless of where I was on the scoreboard. Mark Miller 2007 Open Champion to play well, said a surprising subdued Miller in the scoring area. When I got upand-down [on No. 14] from 75 yards for a bogey that was big. Miller, who had a three-shot lead at the time of the infraction, followed that bogey with a four on No. 15 (par 4, 416 yards) before uncharacteristically missing a twofoot par save on the treacherous 16th (par 4, 435 yards). Miller s lead had dwindled to a shot as Sheftic, who completed his final round a few hours earlier, sat and waited. On the intimidating 17 th (par 3, 220 yards), Miller appeared to be in more trouble when his 4-iron landed some 40-feet short of the hole. His first putt didn t travel as expected and he was left with a left-to-right, 12 footer, up a swale, for par. He made it. That seemed to be Golf Association of Philadelphia Annual eport 28 a common thread in Miller s game all day. He converted almost every par saving opportunity he had. That was unbelievable. To be inside two feet and miss and to overcome that was pretty cool, said Miller. I just said get over it. It s over and done with and make up for it on the next two holes. On the difficult and historic 18 th (par 4, 463 yards), Miller s drive was solid and found the right side of the fairway, ironically, stopping parallel to the Ben Hogan 1-iron plaque. And as that legendary figure did in 1950, Miller, too, found the green. Hogan two-putted for par to force a U.S. Open Championship playoff that year, in which he eventually won. Miller s 4-iron from 216 yards stopped about 40 feet left of the hole. He rolled it up to about four feet. His final stroke sealed the victory and capped final-round, 1-under-par 69. My game plan wasn t going to change regardless of where I was on the scoreboard, said Miller, who is the first member of Yardley CC to ever win the Open Championship. I tried to hit greens and make some putts. I tried to play smart. Sheftic, a lifelong Hogan admirer, almost scripted his own magical ending when he drained a 20-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to finish at 1-over par. See Open Championship, page 29

30 ELVESON, Pa. The 24 th Middle-Amateur Championship, in essence, sifted down to a 36-hole tussle between Chris Gallagher of Penn Oaks GC and Chip Lutz of Ledgeock GC. The pair played each of the two days together at Stonewall (par 70, 6,675 yards, North Course), and like all memorable duels, the outcome remained in doubt to the very end. The final chapter, written on the closing 18 th hole (par 5, 522 yards), witnessed Lutz getting up-and-down from a greenside bunker for birdie to seal his second Middle- Amateur Championship title. Lutz also took the 1998 Mid- Am. when the tournament was still a one-day, 18-hole event. The current format is a two-day, 36-hole competition. When the dust settled, Lutz, 52, of Middle-Amateur Championship May 23-24, 2007 Stonewall (North Course) The Middle-Amateur Championship consists of two rounds of stroke play. Gallagher, the first-round leader after a 1-under 69, posted a 2-over-par 72 to finish a shot back. Michael McDermott of Merion GC, Brian othaus of Philmont CC and James Sullivan, Jr. of Huntingdon Valley CC tied for third place at 4-over par. Conditions again were magnificent, sunny with a touch of a breeze on the links style layout. This gave me a chance to avenge the loss from last year, said Lutz, who fell to Chris Lange by a stroke in the 2006 Mid-Am. Last year I missed a putt on No. 18 to lose. This time I executed a sand shot. I was thrilled with the ability to close it out. Lutz made the winning sand save after he knocked his 18-degree rescue wood from 256 yards into the right bunker in two. Gallagher, who saw his attempt to reach the 18 th green for an eagle try fall short into the front bunker, played first and made a smooth play to about eight feet. Lutz followed by knocking his wedge to four feet. Gallagher missed. Lutz did not. I hit a really good shot, it s tough to get it back to the hole, said Gallagher, 25, of West Chester, Pa. It was a tough right-toleft putt and I didn t hit it hard enough. I knew I had to make it because he wasn t going to miss. The two exchanged blows for most of the afternoon, although it didn t look like that from the start. Gallagher opened up a four-shot advantage with birdies on Nos. 2 (par 3, 210 yards) and 3 (par 5, 498 yards). In that same span, Lutz carded an almost fatal double-bogey on the second hole when his drive landed near the See Middle, page 31 Tee box Defending champion: Chris Lange, Overbrook GC, two-time defending champion. However, Lutz regained his composure with birdies on No. 5 (par 4, 414 yards) and No. 8 (par 5, 550 yards). On the eighth, he knocked a wedge from 60 yards to five feet. He made the turn at 1-under par overall and for the day (he also birdied the first hole). In that time frame, Gallagher struggled with his tee ball and with a Lob Wedge in hand from 80 yards on No. 8 overshot the green. He would make the turn a shot ahead of Lutz. Gallagher made an unconscious up-and-down from the left greenside bunker on No. 10 (par 4, 353 yards) to stay in front, but blew his drive right on No. 11 (par 4, 414 yards) and was forced to pitch out from behind some imposing fescue. Lutz parred the 11 th to tie for the lead. Lutz finally moved in front on the treacherous par 3, 13 th (222 yards) with a par and a Gallagher bogey but Gallagher came right back on No. 15 (par 4, 382 yards) with a nice 15-foot birdie to force a tie. The two were up-and-down again with Gallagher bogeying No. 16 (par 4, 478 yards) after going long and Lutz three-putting No. 17 (par 3, 211 yards). They started the 18 th hole at 1-over par on the scoreboard, three shots clear of anyone else. I knew he wasn t going to hand me anything, said Gallagher. I knew I had to earn it. Tied on No. 16 (par 4, 437 yards), both Chylinski and Thompson pushed their drives right. Thompson s ball kicked back toward the fairway and Chylinski s tee ball landed further ahead and with an opening to the green. Thompson s second shot then clipped a lowhanging branch and dropped just 20 yards further ahead, before his third stroke came up short of the green. He would eventually go on to make double bogey. Chylinski didn t capitalize immediately, though, knocking his 7-iron from 162 yards in the right rough over the putting surface and with a downhill chip remaining. A delicate shot later left him with 20 feet, up the hill. He made it for par to pull two strokes clear. On No. 17, Chylinski, with the honors, followed that par up with a 5-iron to 12 feet just below the hole. Thompson, the pressure squarely on him, seemed unrattled by the prior events. He stepped up and knocked a 5-iron to eight feet above the hole. He made the putt and Chylinski did not, sending the two to the 36 th hole separated by a stroke. Playing first, Thompson found the 18 th fairway. Chylinski, however, did not, pulling his drive left. Thompson, who had seen Chylinski s first two shots, played it straight, knocking a 5-wood from 255 yards that stopped about 20 yards to the right of the green and in the first cut of rough. Thompson chipped up to 12 feet and Chylinski failed to get upand-down for bogey from the bunker leaving Thompson with a two-putt par for the victory. I was kind of in shock honestly, said Thompson, Senior Amateur Championship after Chylinski s chip landed in the bunker. I can t say I haven t hit that shot before. Under the circumstances I felt for him. I ve been on the other side of that one, too. Chylinski moved into contention with a stellar front nine. The 57-year-old from King of Prussia, Pa., posted three birdies on the front side as Thompson posted all pars to pull even. Thompson regained the lead on No. 11 (par 4, 411 yards) with a 145-yard, 9- iron to eight feet but Chylinski responded in grand style with an 8-iron on No. 14 (par 3, 147 yards) to inches. 34 Junior Boys Championship June 26-28, 2007 Cavaliers CC First day is stroke play qualifying for the match play portion of event. (left) Matt audenbush of Pine Valley GC (left), the 2006 Junior Boys Champion, presents winner obert Galbreath, Jr., of Huntingdon Valley CC with the winner s trophy. (above) obert obertson of Sunnybrook GC (left) receives congratulations from Mike Sharp, Jr., the GAP s Junior Coordinator. NEWAK, Del. obert Galbreath, Jr. of Huntingdon Valley CC narrowly knocked off obert obertson of Sunnybrook GC, 1-up, at Cavaliers CC (par 71, 6,558 yards) to win his third Junior Boys title, taking his place in the GAP record books as only the second player to accomplish such a feat in the 93- year history of the storied Junior Program. Galbreath steamrolled over the competition that included a 7&5 victory over Vinny Alessi of Penn Oaks GC; a, 6&4, win to top Bobby Arthur of Tavistock CC and a, 7&6, Final Four triumph over Jimmy Johnston of Merion GC before defeating obertson in the final. Meredith M. Jack of Merion Cricket Club was the only other player to win three Junior titles, only he did it in consecutive fashion from 1914 to It s really nice that I ve won three [Junior Championships], said Galbreath, who had no idea he was only the second junior play to do so. It s a really special feeling. This is just great, I really can t explain it. In each of Galbreath s match-play victories, the 16-year-old from Huntingdon Valley, Pa., jumped out to quick leads. In fact, Galbreath never trailed any of his opponents through the entire matchplay portion of the Championship. When you re playing match play you try to get off to the quickest start you can just to build a lead, he said. You have such great players in GAP and great junior golfers, so you need some cushion against a lot of these guys because of how good they are. But for the first time in the all week, his comfort cushion was threatened as obertson parred No. 7 (par 4, 454 yards) to Galbreath s bogey that brought his lead down to 1-up as the match headed to No. 8 (par 4, 319 yards). I wanted to give myself a little bit more of cushion against a player like ob obertson, said Galbreath of the only opponent that forced him to play a full 18 holes in the match-play portion of the event. He s a really good player and you had to watch out for him on the back nine. However, Galbreath put a quick stop to obertson s surge as he halved No. 8 and then birdied No. 9 (par 4, 348 yards) as obertson s drive found the right trees and then the right greenside bunker. Galbreath s drive of 300-plus yards left him only a 45-yard approach shot to which he stuck to within a couple feet for a conceded birdie. Galbreath s lead grew to three holes on No. 12 (par 4, 382 yards) with a par. But his advantage quickly diminished on No. 16 (par 5, 518 yards) See Junior Boys, page 35 Tee box Defending champion: Matt audenbush, Pine Valley GC At the time: obert Galbreath, Jr., of Huntingdon Valley CC was looking to join Meredith Jack of Merion Cricket Club as the only juniors to earn three Junior Championships. Jack turned the trick from , the first three years of the tournament s inception. obert obertson of Sunnybrook GC also entered the Junior Championship as a threat for the title. 35 From page, 34 after Galbreath knocked his bunker shot over the green and was forced to concede the hole to obertson who was on the green for birdie. Galbreath was now 1-up with two holes to play. Knowing that I had been in situations like that before really helped, Galbreath said. I just wanted to make sure I put the ball in play on No. 17. Added Galbreath, It kind of sounds crazy but I think it was an advantage for me to watch what he did off the tee. That gave me a little extra time to calm down and talk to myself a little bit and focus on those things. Galbreath indeed put his tee shot in play and halved the hole with obertson after brief weather delay. But from the onset of No. 18 (par 4, 383 yards), things looked grim for Galbreath who was now dormie. After obertson laced a drive down the right side of the fairway, Galbreath s tee shot went dead left into the trees but miraculously found the fairway after a fortuitous bounce left him 160 yards to the flagstick. I ve been very lucky the last few years in a lot of tournaments and that was a really fortunate break that I got, admitted Galbreath of his drive on No. 18. From that point Galbreath hit a hard 8-iron to the front collar of the green while obertson was on the green for birdie just 15-feet beyond the hole. Unfortunately, for obertson, his birdie putt missed and Galbreath two putted for par to halve the hole and the win. I just tried to make sure that if he was going to beat me it was going to be with birdie, said Galbreath. That s what you have to do in match play. You can t give holes away.
