3 As we conclude another year, this one like the many before it, has produced a number of membership initiatives, a number of new champions and an endless list of competitive accomplishments. The Association started the year in March with snow still on the ground. The first annual President s Council, a seminar for member club presidents and general managers to gather and discuss hot-button topics with renowned speakers, was held at Philadelphia CC and was very well received. In May, Mike Davis, the new USGA Senior Director for ules and Competitions, was our guest speaker at the annual Pro-President, Golf & Green s Chairmen meeting at Saucon Valley CC. He discussed the USGA s approach in conducting a national championship. An appropriate topic at the time, considering Merion Golf Club was set to host the U.S. Amateur Championship in August, with Philadelphia Country Club serving as the other medal qualifying course. On that note, congratulations to Bill Iredale of Merion GC, the U.S. Amateur s Tournament General Chairman, and his entire team for a job well done. In August, the Association was fortunate to secure Sean O Hair, a PGA Tour ookie sensation, as a speaker for the young junior men competing in the 42 nd Williamson Cup at Bent Creek CC. Sean s poignant message was very well received by all who attended the dinner. Competitively speaking, the Majors produced a couple of newcomers to the championship roster and a pair of longtime greats adding titles to their already impressive resumes. Clint Deibert of Doylestown CC stopped a tenacious Tug Maude of Merion GC, 2&1, in the Amateur Championship final in June for his first title. Maude then rebounded from that difficult defeat in style, defeating Conrad Van Borsig of Concord CC in an 18-hole playoff for the Patterson Cup (the Association s stroke play championship) in mid-august. The victory was Maude s first in the Patterson Cup, and the first time a playoff was needed to decide the title since John Sawin, also of Merion GC, joined close friend Maude in the record books by defeating his former high school classmate by two strokes for the Silver Cross (awarded to the player with the lowest aggregate score in the two qualifying rounds of the Amateur Championship and two rounds of the Patterson Cup). Graham Dendler, an assistant professional at Merion GC, survived steamy conditions and a difficult golf course to record an impressive victory in the Philadelphia Open in July at Aronimink GC. Not to be overlooked are the accomplishments of a pair of venerable veterans: Chris Lange of Overbrook GC and David Brookreson of Huntingdon Valley CC. Lange, 50, a Golf Association of Philadelphia champion for three decades, started the season with a victory in the Middle-Amateur Championship at Spring Mill CC. That completed a Golf Association of Philadelphia career grand slam, of sorts. In addition to the 2005 Mid-Am Championship, Lange has captured the Amateur Championship three times, the Patterson Cup three times and the Open Championship in Also, in 2005, he achieved an unbelievable feat of qualifying for three individual USGA Championships: the U.S. Senior Open, the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Mid-Am. In all, he has qualified for more than a dozen USGA Championships. Brookreson, 56, added his first Senior Amateur Championship and second Senior Silver Cross to the docket. David has had a remarkable career and he certainly has made a major impact on the senior side since turning 55 years of age. The season was capped off with our first Players Dinner on Oct. 11 at Whitemarsh Valley CC with the Association recognizing the respective Players of the Year - Tug Maude (William Hyndman, III Player of the Year), David Brookreson (Senior Player of the Year) and obert Galbreath, Jr. (Junior Player of the Year). All in all, the Association conducted 54 tournaments over 61 days of competitive golf, not including the GAP Team Matches that have traditionally launched each season since When Aronimink GC (then Belmont Golf Association), Merion Cricket Club, Philadelphia CC and Philadelphia Cricket Club Golf Association of Philadelphia Annual eport 3

4 PESIDENT S MESSAGE continued... founded the Association, it was for the sole purpose of conducting inter-club matches. One hundred and nine years later, from the standpoint of participation, these matches remain the single greatest attraction on the entire GAP schedule. In 2005, 3,648 players on 304 teams from 120 member clubs participated in the matches on three consecutive Sundays in April and May. Congratulations to Tavistock CC for its second consecutive GAP Team Matches championship. Tavistock CC defeated Lu Lu CC, Commonwealth National GC, and Little Mill CC for the title. I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all of our champions, but just as important, to recognize all those who competed in the Association s many events. The Golf Association of Philadelphia continued its support of the educational efforts of the Platt Caddie Scholarship and its caddie-scholars. For the school year, the Scholarship awarded $750,000 to 235 caddies. Since its inception in 1958, the Scholarship has awarded $10.75 million to over 3,000 scholars. Also, in the past year, the Lifetime Membership Program has grown to 182, a 26-percent increase from this time a year ago. I want to thank all of those who have been so generous in support of this great cause. The Association s PLAY (Play Local Area Youth) Golf Program completed its sixth year. PLAY Golf was designed to provide opportunities and resources to underprivileged youngsters. A total of 12 groups with enrollment of about 3,600 youngsters are members of PLAY Golf. Each summer, PLAY Golf hosts a championship with a cookout and various contests. If you or your club haven t been involved with the PLAY Golf program in the past, please consider doing so for the upcoming year. This is my last Annual Meeting as President. With that said, I want to thank a number of people who give so much of themselves to the Association. First, I want to thank the volunteers who so generously give of their time to make our events special. Please be sure to say thank you when you see them performing their tasks on the golf course. I want to also thank our member clubs who make their facilities available for our competitions. We could not do it without you. I want to give special thanks to every Association staff member under the leadership of Mark Peterson, the Executive Director. This group of professionals is dedicated to making the Golf Association of Philadelphia the best regional golf association in America. And finally, I want to thank all those who have served on the Association s Executive Committee. They have my deepest respect and appreciation for their tireless efforts. As we make a transition in leadership, I want to congratulate Dan Burton of Bent Creek CC on his election as President. This Association will be in very good hands going forward. Dan Burton, the Golf Association of Philadelphia s Vice-President, is awarded the Tournament of Champions Senior Division title by Neil McDermott, GAP s President. 5 This season was unlike any in recent memory. The tournament veterans who annually sit atop the Championship leaderboards and are penciled in for invitations to the Association s prestigious honorary teams before the first ball takes flight were replaced by a group of new, energetic, young faces. Six of the top seven finishers in the Patterson Cup, for example, were of college age or younger. The winner was Tug Maude, 22, a recent graduate of Wake Forest University, who used the Patterson Cup victory to ensure his first William Hyndman, III Player of the Year honor. Next year and beyond will determine if Maude and his peers unexpected 2005 success signified a changing of the guard or if we just witnessed a wonderful season of golf from the Philadelphia youth. Youth may have prevailed in many events, but the resume of Chris Lange again expanded in Chris has enjoyed many successes throughout his golfing career a three-time Amateur, a three-time Patterson Cup Champion and recent Open Champion, to start but I am sure competing in four USGA championships in the same year will be an accomplishment he cherishes. The 2004 William Hyndman, III Player of the Year, and this season s runner-up, completed the Golf Association of Philadelphia career grand slam with a victory at the Middle-Amateur Championship in May. Chris continues to be at the forefront of the veteran sect and he continues to defend that turf with stellar play. In recent years, the Association has focused on improving the junior program to encourage the youth at member clubs to become more active in this game we hold as a life-changing endeavor. While still keeping a watchful eye on the growth and progress of the junior program, the Association has been forced to address the wonderful dilemma of over population in our senior events. The Golf Administration Committee and staff analyzed the situation and are excited to add two events to the senior schedule for These additions a Warner Cup Net Championship and Chapman Cup Gross Division will allow for more seniors to enjoy competitive golf. To accomplish any championship season, many stars must align and patrons of the game must step forward. Each season the member clubs of the Golf Association of Philadelphia, possibly the finest collection of golfing facilities in the nation, accept the challenge of offering their course for tournament play. On behalf of the Association and the players who enjoy the many venues of Philadelphia, I thank you, the club and its members, for your tremendous support. Along with venues, the success of each championship rests on the ability to accomplish various administrative duties. These duties begin within the staff, but are carried out by a large group of volunteers. The tireless efforts of over 100 volunteers adds to each event s success. The duties of a volunteer are not glamorous, but essential. Tournament Championships and the GAP Team Matches remain the public focus of the organization, but the Association, your Association, remains committed to providing a valuable service that protects and promotes the game. GAP is proud to provide course ratings and handicap services, educational seminars, youth programs, management surveys, golf publications and more. We are thrilled to see the success of the Platt Caddie Scholarship and how it protects the art of caddying and the value it brings to prospective students and future leaders of Philadelphia. A special thanks to all the hard-working superintendents who somehow find more and more time to care for the golf courses we cherish in Philadelphia. The 2005 season was certainly not conducive to turf management. Superintendents and their crews spent countless hours caring for our valuable golfing real estate. Our demand for unattainable perfection in course maintenance along with difficult weather conditions required constant attention. Those hours and attention did not go unnoticed. On behalf of the Golf Association of Philadelphia and golfers in general, I thank you for your time and love of the game. I hope you have enjoyed another year with GAP. We look forward to another season of service as we take your Association to new levels. Golf Association of Philadelphia Annual eport 5

6 The Golf Association s financial records for the year ended Nov. 30, 2004 have been reviewed by the accounting firm of Zelenkofske, Axelrod LLC, who have also been retained to review the financial records for fiscal For the year ended Nov. 30, 2004, net income from operations was $10,000. Operating revenue of $1,277,000 was primarily comprised of club dues, individual membership services and tournament fees; operating expenses of $1,267,000 were mainly comprised of administrative costs, tournament prizes and handicap services. A complete copy of the Financial Statements will be made available to any member club upon written request. For the year ended Nov. 30, 2005, projected income from operations is $58,000. Investments are in one- and two-year governmental securities and are available to meet the Association s cash requirements. Projected net income for fiscal 2005 is targeted to budget. The 2006 annual budget will continue to reflect the conservative, yet progressive, nature of the Executive Committee. Again, we thank the member clubs for their support, and the GAP staff and committees for assisting us in achieving our goals. The new contract extends the original one, and as prior, includes an agreement for seven issues per season. The magazine is available to any member of a Golf Association of Philadelphia member club with a valid USGA Handicap Index and offers readers a thorough recap on Association happenings; articles on member clubs and individuals; and a number of monthly features. The Association continued to focus on its Web site and the information provides. The newest Web initiative in 2005 was the launching of the GAP Team Matches on-line scoring software. Team captains and club professionals of participating teams had the ability to post scores to the Web, thus creating instantaneous results. By the end of the third week of the Matches, more than 50-percent of scores were posted on-line. All 54 Association tournaments received press coverage in some form: metro daily newspapers, suburban weekly publications, and/or national and regional publications. And again, the Communications Department produced and published the annual Yearbook and Media Guide; Schedule Book; Team Match booklet and Course ating and Schedule posters. The Executive Committee approved the three recommended clubs. Those were: Golden Oaks Golf Club, Fleetwood, Pa. Sand Barrens Golf Club, Swainton, N.J. White Clay Creek Country Club, Wilmington, Del. In all, a total of 18 clubs solicited membership information. The Membership Committee also reviews applications for einstatement to Amateur Status. The Committee reviews those applications and forwards them on to the United States Golf Association. In this past year, a total of 14 applications for reinstatement were received, investigated and forwarded to the USGA for its approval. The Computer Assistance Program (CAP) remains a valuable service for member clubs. This Association program, which currently has 116 participants, provides new hardware to member clubs, at no charge, who fully support the GAP/USGA Handicap System. The Golf Association of Philadelphia takes responsibility for maintaining the computer and accompanying GHIN Handicap and TPP softwares. The Association remains committed to the Member Club Survey and the valuable information it provides to each participant. This compiled survey offers more than 90 pages of valuable information to assist those participating clubs and their boards throughout the year, including during the budgeting process. A record 90 clubs participated in The initial President s Council proved successful. It gathered the key leaders of member clubs for an educational forum, presented by nationally renowned speakers, on membership and club synergy and allowed for valuable networking opportunities. All club presidents and general managers were welcomed to attend. The Golf Association of Philadelphia continues to expand a discount program for individual members on products and services. Agreements with companies such as JoS. A. Bank Clothiers calls for discounts on products to all Golf Association of Philadelphia members. Newcomers Clint Deibert of Doylestown CC, the Amateur Champion, Tug Maude of Merion GC, the Patterson Cup Champion and William Hyndman, III Player of the Year recipient, and John Sawin of Merion GC, the Silver Cross Award winner, all added their names to the list of Golf Association of Philadelphia champions while Chris Lange of Overbrook GC, arguably the top player in the area for the last three decades, completed a career Grand Slam with a victory in the Middle-Amateur Championship. David Brookreson of Huntingdon Valley CC registered another Senior Player of the Year trophy on the strength of a second consecutive Senior Silver Cross Award and a Senior Amateur Championship victory. obert Galbreath, Jr., of Huntingdon Valley CC, who repeated as the Junior Boys Champion after becoming the youngest in history last year at age 13, nabbed his first Junior Player of the Year award. Tavistock CC repeated as the GAP Team Matches Champion and Overbrook GC grabbed its 14 th Philadelphia Team Championship plaque. Once again in 2005, the GAP Team Matches posted a competitive record 304 teams from 120 clubs. Congratulations to all Golf Association of Philadelphia champions and competitors. This year saw 54 tournaments conducted over 61 days of competitive golf, including the 101 st Open Championship won by Graham Dendler of Merion GC, the first-ever super-site qualifier for the U.S. Amateur Championship and the Association playing host to the Williamson Cup, a prestigious Junior competition. Also, the GAP watched its representatives on the Senior Challenge Matches team and Mason-Dixon Matches squad reclaim those events respective titles. The purpose of the Golf Administration Committee is to find a competitive balance for all age groups and classes of players. Its most pressing issue this year was the oversubscription of Senior events. Hopeful to alleviate that problem, the Golf Administration Committee approved the addition of two tournaments: a Warner Cup net championship and a Chapman Cup gross championship. These additions, coupled with the Senior Net Championship from a year ago, offer the 55-and-over sect a wide range of events. The Committee appreciates the dedication of Kirby Martin, the Director of Competitions, and all of the Association s staff members and volunteers. The Committee also realizes that these tournaments wouldn t be possible without the selflessness of our clubs and their members willing to part with their courses CHAMPIONS GAP Team Matches Tavistock Country Club Team Championship Overbrook Golf Club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olf Association of Philadelphia Annual eport 8

9 CAA>HH::$ 8& :MYITL ;\YZ[ 4VL?& =IYNN CQKPIYL B&?MMPIV$ <Y& Ensuring each of the Golf Association of Philadelphia s 132 member clubs have the procedures and support to conform to the USGA Handicap System and have accurate USGA Course and Slope atings is essential to the fairness and portability of competitive golf for amateurs at all levels. This focus is the driving force behind the Handicap Services Committee, whose mission is carried out by the Association s staff and dedicated volunteers. Five volunteer course-rating teams rated 24 golf courses this year. Teams were lead by captains Carl Berlinger, William Carr, obert Harris, John Hoffman and ich Meehan. In all, 38 volunteers comprised the Association s course rating teams, all of whom deserve credit for the time and effort involved. Several new raters were added to the rating teams this year. Each rater received individual training prior to rating his first golf course. Once the rating of a course has been completed, the Golf Association of Philadelphia s Course ating eview Committee analyzes each rating to ensure its accuracy and its comparability with the results at other GAP courses. The USGA requires all clubs, public and private, to become certified by having a member of its handicap committee participate in a handicap educational seminar by the end of this year. Seminars were conducted last spring in an effort to help each and every one of our member clubs become certified. The Golf Association of Philadelphia will be assisting any club that has not yet been certified throughout the rest of the year. Doug Sullivan, the Director of Handicap Services and Course atings, and Tyler iggin, the Assistant Director, work with club professionals and handicap chairmen to ensure that our Computer Assistance Program is effectively used. The two troubleshoot and respond to all calls for assistance in a positive, helpful manner so the Association s member clubs can manage handicaps and run tournaments. The Computer Assistance Program remains a great success and is a unique and valuable service for our member clubs. 10 CAA>HH::$ 4VL?& =IYNN EMYYMVKM <& DI^ MY GQTTQIU 5& GMQPMVUI MY It certainly was a memorable A fantastic junior season culminated with the organization hosting the Williamson Cup, a prestigious junior team competition emblematic of the Golf Association of Philadelphia s mission statement: to preserve, promote and protect the game of golf. Bent Creek CC hosted the long-running competition this year that features teams of four players from 10 regional and state associations in a one-day, 36-hole medal play competition. The highlight of the two days came when Sean O Hair, the likely PGA Tour ookie of the Year from Boothwyn, Pa., spoke at the Awards Dinner and reflected about his experiences as a junior golfer and his challenges to make the Tour. Of note, is that Sean kept this commitment despite having to jump in a car and drive the two-plus hours from Baltusrol GC after a practice round for the PGA Championship. And when his talk was complete, Sean and his father-in-law and caddie, Steve Lucas, stayed for the tournament awards presentation and signed autographs until the end. The Williamson Cup was a fitting conclusion to a year filled with special moments: obert Galbreath, Jr., of both Huntingdon Valley CC and Philmont CC, earned his second straight Junior Boys Championship trophy en route to his first Junior Player of the Year award; Eric Schmehl of Moorestown Field Club captured the Christman Cup and Harry Hammond Award courtesy of a final hole eagle after waiting through a two-hour rain delay; Zach Dilcher of Inniscrone GC took the Junior- Junior Boys Championship; ichard Marabella of Whitemarsh Valley CC won the Jock MacKenzie Memorial; and Jason Bernstein of White Manor CC and Cole Willcox of Philadelphia CC grabbed the Francis X. Hussey Memorial after a record-setting round and stirring playoff. This year, we welcomed Dave Prinz, a familiar face, as the new Junior Coordinator. Dave, a former Golf Association of Philadelphia intern, did a wonderful job in keeping the program true to its mission. Currently, the Junior circuit includes tournaments for juniors ages 14 and over, junior-juniors ages and pre-juniors 10-and-under. (The pre-junior class has its own day of fun and development.). I would be remiss if I did not thank all the member clubs who hosted junior tournaments in Members of those clubs who gave up their course seem to enjoy watching fine golf, showing off their facilities and marveling at the skills of the juniors. A special thanks, in particular, to Torresdale-Frankford CC, who agreed to host the Junior Boys Championship on short notice after already being scheduled for the Senior Amateur Championship. We look forward to seeing you all in Meanwhile, hit the books and good luck with your school golf teams. (Above left) Sean O Hair of the PGA Tour speaks at the Williamson Cup dinner. 11 For the academic year, 235 caddie-scholars received $750,000 in scholarship grants. Awards ranged from $200 to $7,000, with an average grant of almost $3,200. The Scholarship continues to remain focused on securing its future. The Lifetime Membership Program, the top tier of giving ($10,000 donation), added 43 contributors this year, bringing the total to 86. Those donations are specifically earmarked for the Scholarship s endowment. The Matching Fund Program continued to grow, reaching a total of 30 schools. Under this program, colleges and universities have agreed to match up to a specific amount of the Platt Caddie Scholarship. For the current academic year these institutions awarded an additional $67,200 to 50 Platt caddie-scholars. Our Caddie Contact Program also continued to prosper in 2005, counting 85 mentors to its ranks. The Caddie Contact Program aims to further aid our caddies by providing guidance in their chosen field of study. The success of the Scholarship is made possible through the generous donations of you, the Golf Association of Philadelphia members and the unequaled support of the organization s staff. We continue to experience a growth in the number of new caddie-scholar applicants, a testament to the support of caddie programs by our Association clubs. We will continue to promote and preserve the tradition of the caddie in the Golf Association of Philadelphia. 6 8 Joseph Ullman (center) of Lookaway GC was named the 2004 Francis C. 12 7I]QL?& <\VSQV$?&7& Philadelphia Local Area Youth (PLAY) Golf provides access for urban and community-based youth to the game of golf, and to the values and skills associated with the game that can make a major difference in their lives. PLAY Golf also administers the Mary s Girls initiative, a unique golf development program for young ladies who do not have the opportunity to belong to private clubs. PLAY Golf, which provides a wide range of golf equipment and tournament play for area youth, completed its fifth year in 2005, with involvement of some 3,500 young men and women in 12 youth golf programs in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Mary s Girls, begun in 2004, is named after the late Mary Ballen of Bala Golf Club, an avid golfer and supporter of women s team golf. The program provides female urban and community-based golfers with instruction and financial support to enable them to excel at the game and earn college golf scholarships. Its principal sponsors are the Ballen family and Women Golfers Give Back, an organization of leading women golfers in the Philadelphia area. The highlight of the PLAY Golf year was the organization s fifth annual Championship, held this year at Bala Golf Club in Philadelphia. Some 50 players, male and female, competed in four age categories. Bala proved to be a tremendous host, impressing the players, parents and volunteers. The Moccasin un Junior Golf Program, of Parkesburg, Pa., retained its Team Championship it shared last year with the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia. Joe Angelo of Moccasin un took overall honors with a 77. Low female was Allison Halata, also of Moccasin un, with 104. Mary s Girls began its second year with the induction of seven young ladies, including two from the program s initial year. As a benchmark of the program s success in its first two years, one golfer, Joanna Coe, of Mays Landing, N.J., attained All-State designation for varsity high school golf in New Jersey, including boys, and another participant, Cassaundra Fincke, of Broomall, Pa., lowered her handicap by more than 10 strokes to 14. The Moccasin un Junior Golf Program captured the fifth annual PLAY Golf Championship team trophy at Bala Golf Club. Golf Association of Philadelphia Annual eport 12

15 Player of the Year Bios Amateur Player of the Year Merion GC s Tug Maude Tug Maude of Merion GC emerged as the face of the Golf Association of Philadelphia s generation next. In three of the Association s most prestigious and traditionally laden competitions, Maude registered a victory and a pair of secondplace finishes (658 points). Maude, 22, of Wayne, Pa., defeated Conrad Von Borsig of Concord CC in a playoff for the Patterson Cup, the Association s stroke play championship, placed second in the Silver Cross Award Senior Player of the Year Huntingdon Valley CC s David Brookreson David Brookreson of Huntingdon Valley CC secured his second consecutive Senior Player of the Year honor, for all intents and purposes, in a thrilling three-hole stretch at the Senior Amateur Championship. Brookreson, who at the time held a narrow lead in the Senior Amateur, birdied treacherous holes Nos. 6-8 at Torresdale-Frankford CC to cruise to the title, and in the process, the Senior Silver Cross. Brookreson joined Jay Howson, Jr., of St. Davids GC as the only person to capture back-to-back Senior Player of the Year honors. As he did a year ago in his first tour on the Senior Circuit, Brookreson proved an overwhelming force. He tied Mike ose of Talamore at Oak Terrace CC for the low score in the Chapman Cup Gross Division, captured the Senior Amateur Championship trophy, his first, by five strokes and ran away with his second consecutive Senior Silver Cross by an astounding 11 shots. Junior Player of the Year Huntingdon Valley CC s obert Galbreath, Jr. obert Galbreath, Jr. of Huntingdon Valley CC earned a Junior Player of the Year record 555 points en route to his first postseason honor. Galbreath, 14, of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., registered points in eight tournaments, including a remarkable three of the Association s Major Championships Amateur Championship, Open Championship and Patterson Cup. His top accomplishment, though, came in the Junior Boys Championship, where for the second straight year, under intense pressure, he converted a testy putt on the final hole for the victory. standings and fell in the final of the Amateur Championship to Clint Deibert of Doylestown CC, 2&1. All this off of a pair of surgeries (a quad injury) that kept the recent Wake Forest University graduate in neutral during college. Maude successfully walked onto the golf team as a freshman before the first of his two quad injuries sent him to the sideline. When it was all said and done, it was a shock, that s the only way I can put it, said Maude of taking his first Player of the Year title. I had reconstructive surgery on my quad in December so I had no expectations this summer because of that and the fact I didn t play any tournament golf last year. ealistically, I would have never expected to win the Patterson Cup and come in second in two Major tournaments. Brookreson, 56, of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., totaled 496 points in five tournaments, including 35 points for making the cut at the &A s Seniors Open Amateur Championship held at Woburn G&CC in Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom. In his only other Association event, Brookreson tied for seventh in the Francis B. Warner Cup. Brookreson remains the only individual with his name on both the William Hyndman, III Player of the Year trophy and Senior Player of the Year award. He captured the Hydman in His 2005 resume reads with third-place showings in the Jock MacKenzie Memorial and Harry Hammond Award standings (the Junior version of the Silver Cross) and a tie for fourth in the Christman Cup (the Junior stroke play championship). Also, he and partner Eric Chipin of Philmont CC fell in a playoff for the Francis X. Hussey Memorial. On the Amateur side, young Galbreath impressed by advancing into match play of the Amateur Championship, qualifying for the Open Championship and tying for 19 th in the Patterson Cup. It s been such a great experience, playing with guys like Mr. David Brookreson and Tug Maude and all the great players in the [Golf Association of Philadelphia], said Galbreath. I ve really had a nice two years and it s been a privilege ever since I ve played golf with them. Golf Association of Philadelphia Annual eport 15

22 Amateur Championship June &19, 2005 Cedarbrook CC/Green Valley CC (qualifying only) A tenacious Clint Deibert of Doylestown CC turned up the pressure over the final nine holes to defeat a determined Tug Maude of Merion GC, 2&1, for the 105th Amateur Championship title. (Above) Clint Deibert of Doylestown CC displays the J. Wood Platt Championship Trophy after defeating Tug Maude of Merion GC, 2&1, in the final of the 105 th Amateur Championship. (ight) Maude and caddie Sam yder discuss a putt on the eighth green. BLUE BELL, Pa. A tenacious Clint Deibert of Doylestown CC overcame a sluggish beginning and a resolute Tug Maude of Merion GC, 2&1, for the 105 th Amateur Championship title at Cedarbrook CC. Deibert is the first player from Doylestown CC to win the championship. In fact, he is the first Doylestown CC representative to reach the final match. It feels great. I said the other day, this is why we play these things to get to this point and hopefully succeed, said Deibert, 23, of Doylestown, Pa. Added Maude, 22, of osemont, Pa., It s been a real memorable week. I definitely exceeded my expectations and goals for the week. It s tough losing, but I don t feel like I lost the match. I feel like Clint won it. You can live with that. This was the first Amateur final for both players. Deibert, who was seeded No. 6 after qualifying, proved unyielding in the 36-hole final. In the duration of five holes spanning the morning and afternoon rounds, Deibert went from 3-down to 2- up. He also entered the final nine 1-down before finishing strong and closing the match out on No. 17. You can t make bogeys and in the first 18 holes I made five of them, said Deibert of the difference. That s why I was down early. The putt on 18 [in the morning] got some momentum going. I made only one bogey in the final 18 holes. Deibert actually entered the 17 th hole of the morning round down three. Maude, who was the fifth seed after qualifying, fostered an early advantage on a strong middle move in which he captured holes No. 12, 14 and 15. Maude knocked a 6-iron from 188 yards onto the par 5, 12 th hole (516 yards) in two strokes for birdie, carded a par on the 443- yard 14 th hole (par 4) for a victory as Deibert failed to get up-and-down from the grass bordering the greenside bunker and recorded a routine par with Deibert in the left tree line on No. 15 (par 4, 427 yards). However, just as Deibert appeared to be on the verge of going 4-down on the 17 th hole (par 4, 452 yards), and in serious trouble, he made a nice upand-down two-putt bogey from a buried lie in the bunker to the left of the green. Maude found the fairway bunker, landed 30 yards short with his second shot and then after his chip to (Far left) Patrick Marshalek of Whitford CC, (left) John Sawin of Merion GC and (above) Brian Gillespie of St. Davids GC all made inspired Amateur runs. Golf Association of Philadelphia Annual eport 22 eight feet three-putted for double bogey. Deibert applied more pressure on the 18 th hole when he drained a 10-foot birdie chance from below the cup. Maude found more bunker trouble off the tee and his second shot ran long of the green. Maude led 1-up with 18 holes to go. Deibert s roll continued early into the afternoon session. A par-birdie-par start pushed Maude, a recent graduate of Wake Forest University, 2-down. I started feeling good, said Deibert. I started feeling comfortable with my swing. Both players 2-irons ran long of the green. Maude got up and down. Deibert did not. That s my favorite hole, said Deibert of going to the downhill 10 th (par 5, 539 yards). ightly, so. He laced a drive that just trickled into the rough. His wedge from 141 yards landed safely on and he two-putted for birdie. Maude found the other ride of the fairway rough and had to chip out. The match was All Square. The two halved No. 11 but a wayward drive to the right by Maude on No. 12 (par 5, 510 yards) and an unlucky second shot that clipped the final tree near the green put him behind the 8-ball. Deibert Amateur Championship (Left) Conrad Von Borsig of Concord CC prepares to hit his approach shot on the 12 th hole. Slonis finished at 2-under par in qualifying and was the only player in red figures for the 36 holes. launched a stellar 6-iron from 191 yards that landed in the center of the green and a two-putt birdie pushed his edge to 1-up. On No. 13 (par 3, 220 yards), Deibert took a step closer to victory. Deibert found the right greenside bunker off the tee. Maude s drive landed next to a tree to the left of the green. Maude went first and left himself 15 feet for par. Deibert s sand shot finished rolling three feet past the hole. Maude missed his chance and Deibert moved two ahead. I had a great lie, said Deibert of the bunker shot. I felt great over the shot. I just had to execute. Deibert applied, in essence, the final blow on No. 15 (par 4, 445 yards). Deibert s approach rolled to the back left of the hole. Maude made a miraculous recovery from under a tree to the right of the fairway and it appeared a pair of pars would keep the match in doubt. However, Deibert, who said he s been in the spot all week, rolled in a 30-foot uphill six-foot breaker. To be honest I was just trying to get down there and make a four, said Deibert. Instead, he won the Amateur Championship. A Deibert hiccup on No. 16 (par 3, 174 yards) continued the match, but he drained an 18-foot par save on the 35th hole after coming out of the right rough to clinch the win. Final 6. 26 Joseph H. Patterson Memorial Cup Aug , 2005 Concord CC/adley un CC The Patterson Cup consists of two rounds of stroke play. CONCODVILLE, Pa. Tug Maude became the first Merion GC representative since Max Marston in 1924 to earn a spot on the Joseph H. Patterson Memorial Cup trophy. Maude did so by surviving an 18-hole playoff with Conrad Von Borsig at Concord CC (par 71, 6,736 yards) to take the 103 rd Patterson Cup, the stroke play championship of the Golf Association of Philadelphia. In the 18-hole medal format playoff, Maude, 22, of Wayne, Pa., finished at even-par 71 while Von Borsig, 18, of Swarthmore, Pa., and a member at Concord CC, posted a 3-over-par 74. The two posted 5- under-par totals of 138 after 18 holes each at Concord CC and adley un CC. The Patterson Cup is played over 36 holes (18 holes at each club) in one day. I was surprised when I heard that, said Maude, a recent graduate of Wake Forest University, on being the first Merion member in 81 years to take the Patterson Cup. There are so many great players there. It s such an honor. Marston was a member of Merion Cricket Club, the predecessor to Merion Golf Club, at the time Neil McDermott (left), President of the Golf Association of Philadelphia, presents Tug Maude with the Patterson Cup. of his victory. Added Von Borsig, who was set to begin his freshman year at the University of Virginia, about the difficult defeat, I didn t quite make any putts today. Against him I thought even par at worse was going to win it. I played well, he played better. Maude controlled a majority of the contest, with a slight hiccup in the middle. Up four strokes on No. 13 (par 4, 441 yards), he put his drive in the lateral water hazard on the left side of the fairway. He made a double bogey six. On the next hole, No. 14, a 90- degree dog leg par 5 that bears to the right, Maude clipped the trees with his drive, knocked his third shot over the green, left his chip short and three putted for a seven. That coupled with two Von Borsig pars evened the contest. However, on the par 3, 15 th hole (190 yards), Von Borsig s tee ball clipped the greenside tree and kicked into the fairway. Maude knocked a 5-iron to 15 feet hole high. Von Borsig had a quirky chip standing in a bowl with the ball above his feet and knocked it long. Before it was over, he carded a five. Maude registered a par to recapture a two-stroke lead and, in all actuality, seal the victory. Those holes are real tricky. I call them Amen corner [holes 12-14], said Von Borsig. I figured my local knowledge would help and then he gave me some more [help]. It was kind of a weird feeling finding myself even after being out of it for awhile. I guess I was a little flustered [on the tee] and didn t hit a good shot. This was the first Patterson Cup playoff since 2000 when Greg O Connor of Huntingdon Valley CC won the title in a three-man playoff. 27 Philadelphia Open Championship July 20, 2005 Aronimink GC The Open consists of two rounds of stroke play. NEWTOWN SQUAE, Pa. Graham Dendler, an assistant professional at Merion GC, turned a potentially disastrous situation on his 35 th hole into the bogey of a lifetime to secure a victory in the 101 st Open Championship at Aronimink GC (par 70, 7,125 yards). Dendler finished the 36-hole stroke play event at 2-over par, one shot clear of John Pillar, Sr., the Director of Golf at Woodloch Springs GC, and two strokes ahead of amateur Clint Deibert of Doylestown CC and Overbrook GC professional Stu Ingraham. This is unbelievable, said a stunned Dendler. This is by the far the biggest feat in my career. On a hot, humid day, Dendler came to the 17 th hole (par 3, 202 yards) in his final round at 1-over par, a shot clear of Pillar. His 4- iron, however, landed in the bunker short and right of the green leaving a pitch to a back hole location. Dendler bladed his blast and it landed in an area used to access the maintenance shed. With, in essence, the tournament in the balance, Dendler s flop shot rolled up tight and he converted the putt for a bogey. Dendler parred his final hole and Pillar posted a bogey-par finish on Nos. 8-9, his final two holes. I expected it to be out of bounds. If that was the case, it was definitely the tournament, said Dendler, 33, of Havertown, Pa. It was an amazing up-and-down considering the circumstances. Dendler s lone challenger down the stretch was Pillar. The 38-year-old resident of Hawley, Pa., found himself in a tie with two holes to go. Pillar, though, missed the green on the long par 3, 8 th (237 yards), his 17 th hole, and left a birdie chance from 25 feet an inch short on No. 9 (par 5, 556 yards). I made some sloppy mistakes, said Pillar. I don t have a club for that 8 th hole. I hit a 2-iron and it caught the tree [to the right of the green]. I hit a poor chip shot and made a nice five footer for bogey. I m very happy with how I played, however. Graham Dendler, an assistant professional at Merion GC, took the 101st Open Championship. Pillar registered the lone underpar round of the tournament with a 2-under 68 in the morning. That gave him a three-shot lead. Deibert, the reigning Golf Association of Philadelphia Amateur Champion, found himself in contention late with nine holes to go after carding a 2-under-par 33 on his front side in the afternoon. However, Deibert registered three straight bogeys on his back nine and two more bogeys in the middle of that inward swing to fall back. I tried to step on the accelerator and pin chase and short sided myself a couple of times, said Deibert of that final nine holes. I hit it in places you couldn t hit it. Deibert was looking to become only the second Amateur Champion to capture an Open Championship in the same year. Jay Sigel, in 1987, is the only one to turn that feat. Dendler carded a 2-over-par 72 in the first round and was in a group of 10 players within four shots of the lead after the morning session. 28 IVYLAND, Pa. Chris Lange of Overbrook GC completed the Golf Association of Philadelphia s career Grand Slam. Lange, 50, of Bryn Mawr, Pa., carded a 1-overpar 145 to claim the 22 nd Middle-Amateur Championship at a demanding and difficult Spring Mill CC (par 72, 7,295 yards). Lange, who last summer became only the 11 th amateur to capture the Philadelphia Open, is a three-time Amateur Champion (1984, ) and three-time Patterson Cup (1989, 1994, 1999) Champion. Those three tournaments, along with the Mid- Am, comprise the Golf Association of Philadelphia s Majors schedule the Grand Slam. I never really thought about it until it was mentioned to me yesterday, said Lange, who carded a 2-overpar 74 in the final round. I m sure it s something I will relish over the years. Obviously, back 20 years or so ago, there wasn t a Mid- Am or Jay Sigel or Bill Hyndman would ve have been the first. I just had great timing on my side. Andy Achenbach of ivercrest GC & Preserve and ich Pruchnik of West Chester G&CC tied for second at 5-over-par 149. Five other players finished at 7- over 151, including defending champion Michael McDermott of Merion GC. Lange, who opened the tournament with a 1-underpar 71 in the first round, was out of sync for the first 11½ holes of the second round. He made the turn at 2-over-par and bogeyed the challenging 11 th (par 5, 573 yards) after a poor second shot landed in the rough short of the green. His 5- wood on the par-3, 230- yard 12 th found the left greenside bunker and Lange faced a difficult, long bunker shot with water on the other side. Lange knocked the chip to two feet. He then sealed the tournament with successive birdies, a five-footer on the par- 5, 13 th (567 yards) and a testy left-to-right curler on No. 14 (par 4, 459 yards). PHILADELPHIA, Pa. David Brookreson of Huntingdon Valley CC added two more jewels to his championship belt when he won the Golf Association of Philadelphia s 35 th Senior Amateur Championship and the Association s Senior Silver Cross at Torresdale-Frankford Country Club (par 70, 6,224 yards). Brookreson, 57, carded a 1-under-par 69, the only under-par round of the tournament, to go with an opening-round 72 to win the Senior Amateur by five shots, after finishing second last year. It was his first Senior Amateur Championship and his second straight Senior Silver Cross, both coming on the heels of his win Sept. 1 at the prestigious national North-South Senior Amateur at Pinehurst esort & Country Club in North Carolina. Huffing at a few missed short putts and puffing continuously on his trademark, ever-present cigar, Brookreson, playing in the last threesome of the day, dueled down the back nine with his two closest competitors, Edmund Chylinski of Chester Valley GC, the first-round leader, and Michael Dougherty of Huntingdon Valley CC. It s always nice to get your name on a permanent trophy, said a smiling Brookreson, a resident of Huntingdon Valley, Pa. Last year I had a bad first round and came back strong but Craig [Scott, a close friend and the eventual champion] hung in there to win. It was tight through 14 holes as Brookreson led Dougherty by a stroke and Chylinski by three. Then came a big break on No. 15 when he pulled a hybrid drive into the left treeline on the short par 4, 297- Overall Gross 1. He hit a wedge from 95 yards and drained a curling 15-footer for birdie from just in the fringe. Dougherty, playing steady golf all day, had just 80 yards in, but the wheels came off on one swing. He bladed a wedge over the green into an impossible lie in the back of a back bunker, took two to get out, and double-bogeyed the hole. It was a three-shot swing. I made a couple of bad swings, said Dougherty, 56, of Warrington, Pa. I had no chance to keep that bunker shot on the green so I kept it in the bunker hoping to get up and down. On the next hole, the 545-yard, par 5 No. 16, the long-driving Chylinski boomed a tee shot 300 yards and pulled out a fairway metal to go for the green. But he topped the shot into a walled water hazard 100 yards ahead and double-bogeyed the hole. In essence, it was all over, as Brookreson parred in for the win. Net 1. For the second year in a row, obert Galbreath, Jr., of Huntingdon Valley CC came from behind on the back nine to win the Golf Association of Philadelphia s 90 th Junior Boys Championship. In a tight match that turned several times on the back nine at Torresdale-Frankford CC (par 70, 6,160 yards), Galbreath, 14, came from 2-down with four holes to play to defeat Amory Davis, 16, of DuPont CC, 1- up. He became only the eighth back-to-back winner of the championship and the first since Billy Stewart of Llanerch CC in 2000 and Last year, he beat James Kania, Jr. of OBET GALBEATH, J. Overbrook GC, 1-up, at Philmont CC (South Course), after being 3- down with five holes to play. It feels great, he said after the title match. But I was fortunate to get a few breaks because Amory played fabulous. Galbreath made the turn 1-up and drained a seven-foot birdie putt on the 471-yard, par-5 10 th hole to go up by two. Then on No. 11, a downhill 199-yard, par 3 guarded in front and on the right by a large, walled creek, the fickle gods of golf changed direction twice. Galbreath s tee shot faded way right, heading toward the creek. But it clanked off a big oak and bounced sideways over the creek, onto the green, 30 feet from the flagstick. Davis tee ball hit short of the green and almost spun back into the creek. Advantage Galbreath, but not for long. Davis bounced a lob wedge onto the green and into the cup for deuce to win the hole. Galbreath caught another break on No. 15, a 292- yard par 4, when he blocked his tee shot right into trees only to have it bounce back into the fairway. The hole was halved with pars. Then on No. 16, a 550-yard par 5, after two booming drives down the middle, Galbreath hit his second shot right, again into the trees, and Davis hooked a long iron into the left trees. While Davis had to chip out, Galbreath wound up with not only a clear path to the green, but an excellent angle to the back left hole location. He hit a wedge to 12 feet and sank the putt for a birdie to square the match. Davis saved the match with a four-foot par putt on No. 17 (par 3, 168 yards) that made almost a full lap around the hole before spiraling in to keep the match All Square. But he pulled a high, errant drive well to the left on No 18, a 364-yard par 4, landing on the 10 th tee and behind more trees. Again, he had to pitch out and hit a wedge to 16 feet. Galbreath killed a long drive down the middle, but his 120-yard wedge spun off the green and down a steep bank, from where he chipped to six feet. Davis missed his par putt by a couple of inches and Galbreath drained his par putt for the title. A dejected Davis said, I hacked it around. I couldn t hit the fairways, I couldn t hit my wedge and couldn t putt. The gallery, however, couldn t have disagreed more, as it watched Davis shoot a 73 (37-36) in a grueling, pressure-filled match. Tee box #*+*1).1, ( !
