Mr Lee, Singapore s founding father and first Prime Minister, played a big hand in the formation of the Tanah Merah Country Club in As the club s founding chairman Sim Kee Boon said then: I was in charge of building the new Changi Airport at the time. I happened to be in the helicopter with Mr Lee Kuan Yew (then Prime Minister of Singapore), when he came up with the idea to develop the piece of land adjacent to the Airport into a golf course. TMCC chairman Ng Kee Choe, deputy chairman Choo Chiau Beng, club president Ho Beng Huat, General Committee, members and staff of TMCC thank Mr Lee for his vision and foresight. Rest In Peace, Mr Lee

Editor s Note 5 EDITOR S NOTE GOOD THAT GOOD SENSE PREVAILED AT AGM By Godfrey Robert In any diffi cult situation, good sense must prevail if the issue is to be solved. And good sense must mean the give and take policy to resolve a problem. That was what was displayed by the transparent TMCC General Committee (GC) and some motion-proposing/ supporting members during the club s AGM on April 24. The hot topic was the new policy introduced by the GC in February that buggies be made mandatory on Saturdays (both morning and afternoon sessions) at the Garden course to speed up play for the enjoyment of all golfers. Immediate feedback by some members and an ensuing dialogue with some members saw the considerate GC offering a compromise and introducing compulsory buggy use only on Saturday afternoons, which meant that walking was allowed for Saturday mornings. This concession also allows the GC a good comparison between the two modes of play (using buggies and walking), Saturday afternoons being the busiest period during the week. The GC said that it would monitor the two modes of play and review the results in three months. In that one reactive act, it was evident that good sense prevailed. There was give on the part of the GC in that gesture. And the unhappy members at the AGM put forth their arguments in a gentlemanly and civilised manner. There were no raised voices. But a feeling of passion for playing golf, and in the interest of the club. And the members, who voted on the motion at the AGM understood, the GC acted by the prescribed Bye-Laws relating to the conduct of Members, the use of the Club s recreational facilities and conduct of games. The GC had applied Club Rule 46 which vested power in them to act with regard to the conduct of games. And while the GC shall give regard to the outcome of the vote taken in the motion, it only served as an expression of members views and opinion. The concerned members thus showed some give in that reality. And there is take for both parties as the end point to the concerns is that golfers want to enjoy playing the game, and at a pace that best suits the golfers. As in any such situation, there would be slow players from both modes of play, and the argument put forth by some members that walking does not necessarily be slower than the use of buggies is a valid one. And the fact that they identifi ed some golfers who were generally slow players shows that they care for the overall improvement of playing conditions. It is only healthy that issues and concerns are raised to allow the GC to act in a manner to fi nd ways to satisfy the members. Thus the GC s decision to study the situation through a comparison between the two modes of play on Saturdays. After the thorough review, it is certain that the GC would take an action in the best interest of the members, and the club. I m sure members would see rationale in whatever action the GC would take in three months. So continue to enjoy your golf at one of the best layouts in the region, members.

8 TOPFeature Healthy TMCC in Financial State Compensation for lost 10-hectare land amounts to $3 million By Godfrey Robert

TOPFeature 9 From Left to Right: Mr Ho Beng Huat, Mr Victor Liew and Mr Kok Min Yee From Right to Left: Chairman Ng Kee Choe, Deputy Chairman Choo Chiau Beng, Charly Mah, Michael Kee and Daniel Jee The Tanah Merah Country Club has done reasonably well for the fi nancial year ended 31 December Club president Ho Beng Huat set a happy tone for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on April 24 with this disclosure. Giving an overview of the club s fi nancial position he reported that that club achieved an operating surplus of $1,172,532 as against $691,199 in He added that the overall defi cit of $6,052,789 was, however, substantially higher and club treasurer Ronald Ong explained the reason for that. He said: This was due to a one-off accelerated depreciation of the affected items related to the compulsory acquisition by the Government of leasehold land, golf course and club facilities amounting to $3,050,615. Two members, Mr Gerald Mah and Mr Wee Koon San, asked about the compensation pertaining to the loss of the 10 hectares of land to the Singapore Land Authority and how the amount was treated in the account. To which, Mr Ong replied that the amount was $3 million for the land (excluding reconfi guration and other costs) and this fi gure would only be recognised in the 2015 account. Before the commencement of the AGM, attended by 75 members, Mr Ho asked all present to observe a one-minute silence, as a mark of respect for our founding Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew who passed away on 23 March. At the meeting member Mr Charles Quek enquired about the follow up pertaining to the question raised in the last AGM on whether Subscribing Membership Category B could be allowed to top up at a special rate to become Ordinary Members to raise funds for the Club.

10 TOPFeature Mr Ho replied that the matter would be decided after fi nalising the renewal of the club lease with the Government. He added that the latest information on lease renewal is that the Land Transport Authority was still studying the details of the road system around the club and he hoped that this would be fi nalised soon. Members also provided feedback on improvements to golf playing facilities, relating to single players during weekday timesheets by keeping a registry and pairing them whenever possible to a two-ball or three-ball fl ight, which at times would be diffi cult to self-arrange. Some improvements for club s consideration include, installing steps in some deep bunkers, installing a lift in the clubhouse for the convenience of the handicapped and aged members, and airconditioning part of the dining area at the 19 th hole of the Garden course. Earlier Mr Ho also said that the compulsory use of buggies at the Garden course to speed up the pace of play will be implemented from 28 March only on Saturday afternoons, leaving Saturday morning sessions still open to walkers. This was the decision of the club s General Committee (GC) on studying and mulling over exchange of views and feedback from some members and upon receiving a member s motion on the matter. And this will allow the GC to make a comparison between the two modes of play on Saturdays while it monitors the situation towards a review of the results in three months. A minute of silence was observed as a mark of respect for our fi rst Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

TOPFeature 11 The member s motion, proposed by Mr Mark Wong Lai Choong and seconded by Mr Chan Chin Tuan with the support of nine other members, read: That all categories of members of TMCC are allowed the complete discretion on whether to use buggies, trolleys, caddies and/or turf mate motorised trolleys when playing golf at the Garden course on any day of the week, except when a particular mode is specifi ed for an offi cial club tournament or a club-sanctioned formal competition. Club president Ho Beng Huat invited members to express their views and opinions on the subject. Mr Mark Wong and several other members felt that pace of play was unrelated to the mode of play and there were also buggy users who could be slow players. Some members remarked that there were a handful of known slow players and that these slow players should be counselled or penalised as a better solution. Mr Ho said that the Club respects views made by members but he also wished to highlight that Club Rule 46 entrusts the GC to regulate the conduct of games, including golf, amongst other things. As such the GC has to regard the outcome of the vote taken on the member s motion (48 members voted for and 17 against) only as an expression of members views and opinion which the GC will, of course, take into its further consideration. Mr Ho also stated at the AGM that the sole intent of the GC s initiative in February this year on compulsory buggies on Saturdays at the Garden course was to speed up the pace of play after persistent complaints of slow play over the years.

18 In the Spotlight BY GEORGE, IT S A PLAY-OFF Victory George Foo By Godfrey Robert A sweet 12-foot birdie putt in the fi rst play-off hole gave George Foo the Tan Puay Huat Trophy. Foo, 25, edged out a gutsy Low Wee Jin in the Tanah Merah Club Matchplay Championship 2015 at the Garden course on 22 March. The two golfers gave the popular competition a fi llip by producing some of the best golf seen at the club. At the sudden-death par-four fi rst hole, Foo drove to 110 metres from the fl ag, and used a pitching wedge to send the ball pin-high, 12 feet from the hole. Low, meanwhile, hit a good drive but wedged to past the hole on the left rough. But he had a great chip to two feet from the hole for a par -- not enough to further stretch the game. Earlier the two players fought tooth and nail over the 18 holes, either of whom led by no more than one hole as the advantage kept changing hands. And when they headed to the diffi cult par-fi ve fi nishing hole, they were all square. Both played bogeys to take the game into a play-off. Foo savoured the victory, but modestly added: I was lucky that Jerome Ng and my brother Gregory, both national players, were out of town training and playing with the South-east Asia Games squad. If either of them had played, I don t think I would have had a sweet run. Despite the scores, I give credit to all the participants who gave of their best in the competition. Foo, an assistant sales manager with Ram Pacifi c, a retail distributor for Rimova, a luggage-maker, was a former national player who has a business and sports degree from Monash University in Melbourne. Results: 1st Round: Low Wee Jin bt Dave Goh 7 and 5, Alfred Eu bt J. Akanuma in sudden-death fi rst hole, Roy Wong bt Calvin Goh 1-up, Fang Jia Wei bt K. Sakurai 3 and 2, Ken Sugino bt Keith Murray 6 and 5, George Foo bt Lim Chee Chien by walkover, Justyn Jagger bt James Roh 2-up, Melvyn Choo bt Lee Beng Hong 2 and1. 2nd round: Low Wee Jin bt Alfred Eu 6 and 5, Fang Jia Wei bt Roy Wong 2-up, George Foo bt Ken Sugino 4 and 3, Justyn Jagger bt Melvyn Choo 2-up. Semi-fi nals: Low Wee Jin bt Fang Jia Wei 3 and 2, George Foo bt Justyn Jagger 6 and 5. Final: George Foo bt Low Wee Jin in sudden-death fi rst hole. Joint-third: Fang Jia Wei and Justyn Jagger.

In the Spotlight 19 Kyoko PRAISES OPPONENT AFTER PLAY-OFF WIN By Godfrey Robert Kyoko Kanaya With two holes to go, it seemed only a formality for Kyoko Kanaya to seal the Tanah Merah Country Club s Ladies Matchplay Championship. Leading by two holes, the 18-handicapper had only to halve one hole, and that with the advantage of a having a stroke on the fi nishing hole. But the fi ghter in Norlia Embong saw the eight-handicapper bounce back with two solid pars at the Garden course on March 22 and stretch the game into a play-off. However, Norlia lost the play-off fi rst hole only just, both players returning bogeys but Kyoko enjoying the stroke advantage on the par-four hole. Kyoko was not too happy with her fi nish in regulation time, despite an overall decent game. I played double-bogeys on both the fi nishing holes and was punished for that. Nolia played really well, returning pars. I was quite comfortably up until the 15th hole. But on the 17th, I lost a bit of tempo after a decent drive and lost the hole. On the 18th, my drive was okay, but my third shot found the right bunker on the tough fi nishing hole. I came out of the bunker and nearly lost the ball in the water as it just stopped short. I then chipped and two-putted for a double-bogey while Norlia was on in three and two-putted for par. On the deciding fi rst hole, I was on the fringe in two, then chipped and two-putted for bogey. Norlia was on in two, but left a long putt. I was surprised her fi rst putt was short because she had putted very well during the game. I thought she could two-putt. But I must acknowledge her tenacity, and overall she is a good golfer. For Kyoko, whose husband runs a tanker coating business, this was a fi rst triumph in the competition after three runnerup fi nishes. There was a period in the fi nal when I felt that I would be fourth-time runner-up. But a bit of fortune helped me to beat Norlia. Kyoko, who admires Japanese LPGA pro Ai Miyazato, and lately New Zealander Lydia Ko, is now a TMCC league player. Because of that she has upped her playing frequency from twice-weekly to three or four times a week. I m keen to improve my game, she said, hinting that the Matchplay triumph could give her a big fi llip. Results: 1st rd: June Yeo bt Gillian Sim 4 and 3, Kyoko Kanaya bt Jasmine Chew 5 and 3, Fumiko Minowa bt Corrina Chin 8 and 6, Norlia Embong bt Jin Jia Rui by walkover. Semi-fi nals: Kyoko Kanaya bt June Yeo 1-up, Norlia Embong bt Fumiko Minowa 1-up. Final: Kyoko Kanaya bt Norlia Embong in fi rst hole of suddendeath play-off.

From the Greens 23 Aren t you going to clean up the mess you made in there? By Robin Langdale ETIQUETTE IS Important Why should I bother? I ve paid a bomb to join this club, plus my monthly sub, so I don t see why I should maintain the course. Care of the course I don t know how the minds of the bunker messer uppers work, but that fellow is not fi t to be a member of any golf club is he? It seems obvious, but some people don t seem to think about it unlike any other game, golfers share the course and follow each other round. So if we each keep the course tidy we can all play golf on a well-kept course. The staff cut the greens and tidy the bunkers in the evening and late in the day. But clubs don t have people to clean up each hole after the players have moved on; so if each player doesn t do so the course gets messier and messier as the day wears on. Good golfers will be seen cleaning up their bunkers, fi lling their divots, tapping down scuff marks and repairing one or two ball marks on a green. They understand the game and care for its etiquette because that s part of what makes golf the greatest of all games. Maybe that s also part of the reason they are good golfers - they have self-discipline and that breeds self-confi dence. Concentration We all play our best when we focus well, so respect others need to concentrate, then you have a right to ask them to respect yours if they are remiss. The rules are simple: Stay still and quiet when a player is setting up and making a stroke Don t stand behind the line of play or on the line beyond the hole. Keep out of the player s peripheral vision. Agree the phone etiquette for your friendly fl ight, but it s better to switch phones off or to silent mode. And of course no phones on, in a competition. Safety A moving golf club contains more energy than you think and golf balls can be dangerous if they hit someone in a vulnerable spot, so there are some rules: Ensure no one is in danger from your club or ball; or from stones, twigs etc from your practice swing. Never have more than one ball teed up on the teeing ground this rule minimises the possibility of someone moving into the area of another player s swing. Don t play until the players in front are out of range. Don t walk ahead of others in your fl ight with shots to play. In a mixed game the ladies should keep well to the side while waiting for the men to play their tee shots. A golf ball that has only travelled 30 yards or so is a dangerous missile. An umbrella is a good shield if there is any diffi culty in keeping out of the way. If your ball is heading towards someone, shout fore This is short for forward ball coming and all golfers know what it means. Pace of play If one fl ight plays too slowly on a busy course all the following fl ights are held up. To maintain a good pace there is no need for most people to hurry up with their shots. It s a matter of not wasting small amounts of time. 4 golfers playing, say, 80 strokes each play 320 strokes per round. 5 seconds longer to play each stroke lengthens the round by 27 minutes! So: Just be ready to play when you are away. Don t delay others in your fl ight by moving about unnecessarily when another player is ready to play a shot. On the green, when the first player has prepared to putt, all the others should have surveyed their putts and be almost ready to go. There is a limited useful amount of preparation for a shot. Good players have a routine and take close to the same time to set up for a shot. If you take more than that or stand over the ball more than a few seconds it has a negative effect on the shot. The Club will not allow fl ights to take an unreasonable amount of time to complete their round. So if one player regularly takes more time than normal to play his strokes, he is stealing time from the others to play their strokes. Finally Read Section 1 in the Rules of Golf, on Etiquette and note the last item: Penalties for Breach (of etiquette). Yes, etiquette is part of the Rules. 38 38 Fun in Action Attended a recent Club event? See if you can spot yourself in our pictures and write-ups! Rolling back the Fifties By Godfrey Robert

Fun in Action 39 THE AIR WAS FILLED WITH NOSTALGIA. Not surprisingly. For a trip back to the past always tickles one s memory and rekindles one s spirit. Back to the Fifties was the theme for the club s Social Dancing Night on April 25. And the 75 diners were truly sent on a trip Down Memory Lane by the songs and ambience at the Garden Events Room. Fittingly, the fi ve-piece band, named Adil & Friends, gave a superb rendition and accompanied music with their choice of songs. So we heard a wide repertoire of songs and music of yesteryear. They brought alive names like Elvis Presley, Beatles, Diana Ross & Cliff Richard, to name a few of the singing legends, and they played danceable music for the steps of the cha cha, rock n roll, tango, rumba, twist, foxtrot, jive, waltz and disco rock. The diners were responsive too, taking the fl oor at every opportunity to keep the tempo going. There were also fantastic performances: the fi rst named Swing by Brian Ang and Marz Johar Peck, and the second -- a fusion of rock n roll and jive; by Kavin Rathna and Cheryl Yuen. The venue was well decorated in colourful simmering material, with black vinyl old record acts as centrepiece with the programme card and classy vase with floating candles. The food was delicious too, and chef William Tay painstakingly prepared a spread for royalty. The event ended half and hour past midnight, and after almost six hours of fun and excitement, it was a happy Home Sweet Home for the diners.

40 Fun in Action YUMMY CHIFFON AND NYONYA DESSERTS CHIFFON CAKES Saturday, 28 March 2015 Hmmmm, this is definitely finger-lickin good! Twelve ladies had a good time learning how to bake the Ginger Gula Melaka and Banana Chiffon cakes conducted by Valerie Kong on the morning of Saturday 28 March. As usual Valerie explained in detail on what makes a perfect chiffon cake and how to troubleshoot common chiffon cake problems. Inspired by her trip in Macau and her never-stoplearning attitude, she created the Ginger Gula Melaka Chiffon Cake. Initially, members found that the taste was overwhelming due to the ginger ingredient, but when the gula melaka toffee was poured over it, it complements perfectly. All agreed it is an outstandingly unique recipe and gave their thumb-ups. The ladies were also happy with the outcome of Banana Walnut Chiffon Cake, and Valerie regarded it as a very healthy cake as it is loaded with lots of bananas and walnuts. All the ladies were delighted to sample both cakes on the spot and they were even more happy to bring home to share with their loved ones. ONDEH ONDEH AND KUEH KOCHI Saturday, 18 April 2015 Nine Nyonya kueh lovers attended yet another workshop featuring Nyonya Kueh Kochi and Ondeh Ondeh. Both kueh are made from the same sweet potatoes dough and is amazing that the texture for each kueh turned out differently. The ladies learnt that it is due to the cooking method. Ondeh Ondeh is boiled whilst Kueh Kochi is steamed in banana leaves. All had fun with the hands-on workshop and went home happy with packets of each kueh for their loved ones.

42 Participate A RECORD WAS BROKEN WITH 573 LAPS FOR 2015! SWIM FOR LAPS Saturday, 21 March 2015 A total of 29 members participated in the Swim for Laps held on Saturday, 21 March 2015 with a record-breaking 573 laps. Last year, 40 members participated with 531 laps. That s a difference of 42 laps more with a fewer cast of 11 members. What a roaring feat! Held once a year, the club s objective was to break 531 laps set last year. The event was held from 9am to 5pm and was blessed with good weather. Rules were quite simple, they can contribute as many laps as possible for a minimum of one lap each member. Swimming can be done at their own pace and no timing was taken. After registration, members were assigned to lanes, after which they began swimming. Laps were recorded as they touched the end of the wall. Kudos to our youngest swimmer, 4-year old Zachary Lim who contributed 6 laps and the oldest swimmer was 74- year old Robert Tan who contributed a total of 74 laps and the rest of sporting members of various ages, who contributed to the success of this event. Look out for next year s Swim for Laps event, and all members are urged to participate. The sky is the limit! Light refreshments were served before they went home happy with their contribution. 46 46 Dine & Be Merry Attended a recent Club event? See if you can spot yourself in our pictures and write-ups! SUNTORY, Sushi and ALL THINGS NICE, Arigato Saturday, 11 April 2015 By Godfrey Robert

Dine & Be Merry 47 Google Yamazaki and the fi rst that springs at you are details about what this Japanese whisky is all about. Yamazaki distillery is a Japanese whisky distillery located in Shimamoto in Osaka Prefecture and was opened in It is owned by Suntory and was Japan s fi rst commercial whisky distillery. In 1923, Shinjiro Torii, the founder of Suntory, built Japan s fi rst malt whisky distillery in the Vale of Yamazaki. The distillery s location on the outskirts of Japan s ancient capital of Kyoto offered access to a good water supply, diversity of climate and high humidity -- a desirable environment for the production and maturation of whisky. The United States is the biggest importer of Suntory Yamazaki and accounts for nearly 60 per cent of exports, with China, England, and Indonesia as the next biggest importers. Such being the whisky s reputation, it was no surprise that when Tanah Merah Country Club put it on sale, there was overwhelming response at the Garden Banquet Room. A total of 101 sets (Yamazaki plus Hakushu or Hibiki) at $ was snapped up. And because of the heavy response, the limit of 60 members was lifted and 110 people attended the Suntory Party at the Garden Banquet Room on Saturday, 11 April. Themed It s Suntory Time, the drinkers and diners were entertained to their hearts content on a night when everything was Japanese. Eighty fi ve members and 25 guests received an appropriate door gift each, a set of miniature whisky bottle placed at the tables. The buffet spread of tempura, teriyaki chicken, assorted maki and sushi and many more dishes were sumptuous.

48 Fun in Action It s SUNTORY, Time

Fun in Action 49 And they were, obviously, washed down with the free fl ow of Yamazaki, Hakushu and Hibiki. The attendees dined and wined to the sounds of a serenading two-piece live band, Hassan and Riz, and the astounding three-piece Japanese Taiko drum live performance. Guests were also gliding across the room and mingling with diners from other tables, clinking their glasses as they toasted to the good Suntory wine and great whisky. Two beautiful Suntory promoters and TMCC servers dressed to the occasion in kimono added lustre to the evening. Emcee Jesson was witty and diners kept approaching the stage for trivia games. And the lucky draw prizes were unique, and as Japanese as can be. The party ended at 11pm, just in time for the diners to cruise home and watch EPL football.
