3 Editor s Note 3 EDITOR S NOTE THE NEW GARDEN BANQUET ROOM IS A TMCC SPECTACLE By Godfrey Robert Change is always hard to take. There are traditionalists who are so used to the old ways and old habits that they detest change. There are those who get irritated by disruptions and prefer status quo. New modern energy-saving pendant/feature lightings; and New sound system and sound insulation. The works, started on 7 December 2015, were completed on schedule and there was minimum inconvenience to the members. And then there are long-time members who prefer not to change their usual habits. But change is inevitable. All in the name of having everything and anything NEW, and for long-term benefits. So NEW is the right adjective to describe what has happened to the Garden Banquet Room (GBR), and the members are truly enjoying all things NEW. The changes are thus: New high ceiling with the removal of the existing low ceiling partitions; Large continuous space for dining with the raising of the lower level of the banquet room to match the higher level; New appropriately sized parquet floor area for dancing; New handicap lift within the new banquet room, opening out to the main lobby at the top level and GGT at the ground level; New energy-saving lighting system to suit the mood and function of the occasion; The contract -- following the initiative by Club President, Ho Beng Huat and subsequent approval from Club Chairman, Ng Kee Choe and the General Committee -- was awarded to M/s EDZ Interior Contracts Pte Ltd and all works were completed within the given eight calendar weeks (excluding the handicap lift installation). And the new GBR was opened in time for the fully-booked Reunion Dinner in early February. In anticipation, there was overwhelming response for the Lunar New Year golf game. Now that the starting and ushering in the Year of the Monkey were done in a perfect setting, the GBR will be the ideal venue for future events, such as weddings, birthdays, corporate events, the Interclub game with Sheshan, China, the Wine Pairing Dinner which will be re-introduced and the Annual General Meeting in April which will see a new committee unveiled. So the new GBR is a pride of TMCC, which will be the showpiece for members and guests. v

8 8 TOPFeature Let s do the Prosperity Toss LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS & REOPENING OF GARDEN BANQUET ROOM Sunday, 21 Febuary 2016 By Godfrey Robert As usual, the leaping lions took centre stage in the Lunar New Year celebrations at the Garden layout on February 21. The multiple award-winning troupe, Wenyang Lion Dance Troupe, performed the acrobatics as the onlookers soaked in the action in Lunar New Year fashion. The crowd were impressed by the lions leaping on high poles with acrobatic acts. People were all in awe, by the death-defying stunts from pole to pole. Many people took out cameras to freeze the action. Then the three mascots, Big Head Doll, God of Fortune, and Monkey went around giving sweets and teasing guests. The Cai Qing scrolls were received by Club Chairman Ng Kee Choe, Deputy Chairman Choo Chiau Beng and President Ho Beng Huat. Members and guests sporting participation The ribbon cutting ceremony was graced by six, namely Mr Ng, Mr Choo, Mr Ho, Mr Hia Hui Kim, Mr Benny Tay and Dr Neo Eak Chan. After the ribbon was cut, confetti was fired, the lions paid compliments and the drums sounded the beat. Later the lions entered the dining area and blessed the people in the banquet room.

There was also a competition between two groups of participants, who had to simulate members of a rock band performing, which meant simulating air instruments and with props. The Suzie Wong performance was interactive, and got audience to come up to stage to dance to songs such as Ricky Martin s Shake Your Bon Bon. Members were given 4D tickets during dinner, within hongbaos, and the results were flashed on the projector screen immediately after. One member even won a Starter Prize. 26 26 Golf Central By Robin Langdale Hey! What to do? My ball dropped into that truck And it s driving off! Maybe you should treat it as a lost ball? What TO DO IF YOUR BALL IS DEFLECTED OR STOPPED? Fortunately Rule 19 is kinder than that. In the illustrated situation, the ball must be dropped as near as possible to the spot directly under the place where the ball came to rest in or on the outside agency (the truck), but not nearer the hole. If the spot is on a green the ball must be placed. Outside Agency (Rule 19-1) In the more common situation, when a ball in motion is deflected or stopped by an Outside Agency, it is a Rub of The Green, there is no penalty and the ball must be played as it lies. But if the stroke was played from on the green, it is cancelled and the ball must be replaced and replayed. An exception is when a player s ball, played from off the green and in motion, is deliberately deflected or stopped by an outside agency. The spot where the ball would have come to rest must be estimated and the ball must be dropped as near as possible to that spot. If the stroke was played from on the green, the ball must be replaced and replayed. In a tricky angle to this situation, if the estimated spot is OB, the player must proceed under Rule 27-1 (OB). It may be noted that a Fellow Competitor (stroke play) is an Outside Agency. Opponent, caddie or equipment (match play, Rule 19-2) If a player s ball is accidentally deflected by an opponent, his caddie or his equipment, there is no penalty. The player may, before another stroke is made by either side, cancel the stroke and play a ball, without penalty, as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (Rule 20-5) or he may play the ball as it lies. However, if the player elects not to cancel the stroke and the ball has come to rest in or on the opponent s or his caddie s clothes or equipment, the ball must be dropped as near as possible to the spot directly under the place where the ball came to rest in or on the article but not nearer the hole. By another ball If a player s ball in motion after a stroke is deflected or stopped by a ball in play and at rest, the player must play his ball as it lies. The ball which was moved from its resting position must be replaced. In match play, there is no penalty. In stroke play, there is no penalty unless both balls lay on the green prior to the stroke, in which case the player incurs a two stroke penalty. If a player s ball in motion after a stroke is deflected or stopped by another ball in motion after a stroke, the player must play the ball as it lies, without penalty. If the ball was played from on the green, the stroke is cancelled. The ball must be replaced and replayed without penalty The Flagstick (Rule 17) As long as you do not have anyone attending the Flagstick (the pin), your ball can hit the pin from off the green and if the ball didn t go in, you play it as it lies. Playing from on the green your ball mustn t hit the pin; and in stroke play mustn t hit another player s ball on the green. Penalty for breach: in Match play - loss of hole; Stroke play - two strokes and the ball must be played as it lies. You can have the pin attended at any time before making the stroke, but your ball mustn t hit the pin or the person attending it or his immediate belongings. Penalty for breaching the aforesaid: Match play - loss of hole; Stroke play two strokes. However, if your opponent or fellow competitor, without your authority or prior knowledge, attends the pin during the stroke or while the ball is in motion, and the act might influence the movement of the ball, the person who so attended the pin incurs the applicable penalty. If in this situation your ball strikes the pin, the person attending it or his immediate belongings, you incur no penalty. The ball is then played as it lies, except that if the stroke was played from on the green, the stroke is cancelled and the ball must be replaced and replayed. When a ball played from off the green rests against the pin in the hole and the ball is not holed, the player or person authorised by him may move or remove the pin, and if the ball falls into the hole, the player is deemed to have holed out with his last stroke; otherwise, the ball, if moved, must be placed on the lip of the hole, without penalty. 28 28 Golf Central It PAYS to have Listened to TEPPEI Japanese pro s free clinic provides boost to club golfers By Godfrey Robert In the past 50 years or so, Japan has produced some of the leading golfers of the world. Top on the list is Isao Aoki, a celebrated golfer who set the trend for Japanese golf in the Sixties to the Eighties. Aoki s greatest moment came in the 1980 US Open when he finished two shots behind 18-time Grand Slam champion Jack Nicklaus as a Major runner-up. Other top Japanese golfers who have received global fame include Masashi Jumbo Ozaki, Hideki Matsuyama, Ryo Ishikawa, Naomichi Ozaki, Shigeki Maruyama and Shingo Katayama. So when Japanese pro Teppei Nagai came over to conduct a two-day clinic at the Garden Driving Range, TMCC clubs members were very excited about his presence. About 30 club members had the opportunity to improve and correct their game via free golf lessons by Teppei, who was sponsored by TMCC member, Terence Heng who is also assisting Teppei in obtaining his playing rights on the Japanese Tour. The Japanese Tour is one of the most lucrative and highly-ranked, and an endorsement for that came when Japan Golf Tour Organisation pro Song Young Han (South Korean) recently won the SMBC Singapore Open, edging out world No. 1 Jordan Spieth to the runner-up spot. Those who were able to participate in the programme, offered free, on January 23 rd and 24 th, were given a taste of simple and effective golf instruction, which they could continue to focus on and work on problem areas. Teppei, who hails from Ibaraki Prefecture on Honshu Island, north east of Tokyo, is a member of Japan s PGA and whose idol is former world No. 1 Tiger Woods. He goes by a simple coaching methodology of working on a D-plane concept and simplified face control technique to achieve a highly repeatable golf swing. With the club s wish that such programmes could have more people interested and playing golf, Teppei would be pleased to hear how much he has helped to encourage the members in their individual games. 1. Did the tips from Mr Teppei Nagai help your golf swing and short game? Choy Sui Lan (CSL): Yes, He was able to spot a problem with my back swing and it made a huge difference to my ball flight. Kawai Shinya (KS): I appreciate the golf lesson from Teppei. Lessons are very important for golf, as it is not so easy to attain the results you want. Michael Pang (MP): Yes, it has definitely helped in strengthening my game. 2. Would you like to see more of these types of programmes at TMCC driving range? CSL: Yes please! KS: Yes, definitely. MP: Definitely! 3. Is there any improvement feedback you would like to suggest about the programme? CSL: I think it was very nice of Terence Heng to arrange for Teppei to hold such clinics for the benefit of all members. Just a shame that some members who signed up did not turn up. Maybe in future if members who sign up and do not turn up, a penalty fee should be imposed for no-show or without a valid reason. KS: These types of programmes are very enjoyable especially for Japanese amateur golfers. MP: No, the arrangements were just fine. 4. What future events you would like to see at TMCC for golf coaching? CSL: I think it is always fun for members to attend group clinics as what was arranged. Clinics for short and long games maybe? Am working so unfortunately only a social golfer on weekends. Wish I had more time otherwise. Good effort this time! KS: Maybe some arrangements to include golf club fitting would be good. MP: Similar such events would be a plus. 5. Are you interested in taking regular golf lessons and if so what is your preferred times of the week? CSL: Not sure if I am able to have regular lessons as time is the essence for me and when I can get to the club, I would only have time for 9 holes, if time permits then maybe I ll be able to complete 18 holes. Preferred time would be on weekends as I work regular office hours. KS: I am doing club fitting in Japan, and I see many customers actually having an interest for fitting clubs. MP: Maybe, if it fits into my schedule. v

29 Golf Central 29 TipsFROM IAN By Director of Golf, Ian Roberts HOW TO HIT FAIRWAY WOODS Fairway woods are designed to be swept with a shallower, or more horizontal, angle of approach than the irons. Firstly make sure you have the ball somewhere near the inside of the forward heel (left heel for right-handers). Next, work with practice swings only until you can consistently sweep the grass in the location opposite the inside of your forward heel, rather than take a divot or swing above the grass in the air. Get to the point with your practice swings where you can sweep the grass for a noticeable distance rather than at just one small point where the club bounces off the ground. You can usually see the grass blades move when you sweep through, or you might even leave a path through the grass that you can see after the swings. To accomplish this sweeping, it helps a great deal to relax your arms and hands and feel the club swinging more feely rather than tightening up the arms and hands and trying to force the club to move fast. Stay focused on the sight, sound and feeling of sweeping the grass through the ball and the quality and consistency of your contact with fairway woods will improve. v

43 Fun in Action 43 HAVE A RUM TIME WITH LAPIS RUM-FLAVOURED LAPIS CAKE Saturday, 16 January 2016 By Godfrey Robert Say rum. Then whisper raisins. At once, a flavour sets in, a sweet taste is visualised, and you certainly think of all things nice. And rum, always hints of a samba beat, thus the phrase Rum and Coca-Cola. The origin of the word rum is generally unclear. In an 1824 essay about the word s origin, Samuel Morewood, a British etymologist, suggested it might be from the British slang term for the best, as in having a rum time. He wrote: As spirits, extracted from molasses, could not well be ranked under the name whiskey, brandy or arrack, it would be called rum, to denote its excellence or superior quality. And what has rum got to do with cakes? Baking instructor Valerie Kong provided the answer at a cake session on Saturday, 16 January. The traditional method would have taken one at least a good 2 to 3 hours to complete. However Valerie s own invention of a 9-layer lapis cake would prove that it was possible and suitable during the busy Lunar New Year period. 18 lucky ladies, who had signed up for the workshop, gained new insight and knowledge into making Rum-Flavoured Lapis Cake, which could not be found in bakery shops. Both the Rum with Raisins & Rum with Coffee Lapis Cakes were so well-loved by the ladies that many volunteered to get their hands creamy to help and layer the cakes. Of course, under the guidance and instructions from Valerie. And the best part of it all, was filling the last layer with a generous amount of Rum. As the course tied in with Lunar New Year period, the ladies were glad they came to the workshop, as they had an extra dessert dish to impress their guests, which was quick and easy to make. v She provided lapis cakes in just an hour? Possible? Yes.
