1 This is our members newsletter, so let us know some interesting facts, laughs, contentious issues or whatever. APRIL 2017 MASTERS Now that the euphoria of the Nomads Nationals is over and the staff has gotten some well-deserved rest, we already find ourselves in April and time to put the final touches to the 50 th Jock tournament in early May. This year s Jock is set to be a huge event with the club going bigger and better than in the past. Members are encourage to finalise their golf bookings for the week as space is really filling up fast and we don t want to disappoint you by not being able to get you into the already bumper fields. We still have a few tee/green sponsorships available and the Jock committee are trying endlessly to sell all of these, so if you are interested please let us know. We have managed to secure a gold Kruger rand that we will be raffling during the week in an attempt to raise additional funds and give the opportunity to members that are away for the week to support the club by purchasing a couple of tickets. Following the very successful hosting of the Nomads Nationals 1536 rounds of golf- and the realisation that Nelspruit golf club is geared and able to host major tournaments, the management and committee are now putting together a very comprehensive long term plan with regards to the clubs way forward and the sustainability of the product that we have on offer. There are various fundamental areas and projects that we aspire to accomplish like, the main members bar area, indoor conference facility, the deck dining and bar area, 2 nd fairway project, tee-box project, practice facility and grey water project to name a couple. We would enjoy your buy in and some ideas on what other projects you envisage happening at the club in the next 2-5 years in order to take the club to the next level. A club is only as strong as its members and we trust that with these advancements in the product we offer we can attract and retain a larger membership base and ensure that all enjoy the ultimate bushveld golfing experience. On the enjoyment level of our golfing experience the following results came from the survey that went out to the Nomads that partook in their nationals. They all received the club questionnaire where they had to score the various aspects of the golf experience out of 5. Score Total Score Nomads Survey GREENS 74.8% BUNKERS 67.5% FAIRWAYS 70.3% PACE OF PLAY 72.3% CART/CADDY 67.8% ARRIVAL 80.5% H/WAY 78.2% LOCKER ROOMS 77.5% SERVICE DELIVERY 74.7% ATMOSPHERE 84.5% FUNCTIONS 80.7% With the green lush lawns of Augusta nearly on the telly, I am sure that most of us will be glued to the screens come Sunday night early Monday morning- to witness the new masters champion. Talking about new, one will see that the monthly newsletter has a new look and sponsor in Konica Minolta that has come on board with a new multi-colour printer for the club to utilise. Thank you to Gerhard, Keith and the team from Konica Minolta- Nelspruit. In closing, I was startled to read that there is a new handicap system that will be in force from today, and all golfers handicaps will be reset to zero (scratch) until 10 rounds have been entered into the system. I honestly believe this is a great amendment as we all started by picking up a club for the first time, so why not all start at scratch from hero to zero-. I wish you and your families an eggcelent Easter with safe travels and if you are staying in Nelspruit, I hope to see you at the club enjoying the facilities. Cheers for now, and keep it on the fairways Nelspruit Golf Club Monthly Newsletter APRIL 2017 Page 1
2 Club, Course and Grounds The lapa area has received a well needed facelift and this area is well suited for birthday parties, small conferences and other events. With a great view and very economic hiring fee members are encouraged to book it out and recommended it to friends and family. The 1 st, 10 th, 15 th and 16 th cart paths will be paved in the next couple of weeks. This will reduce the soil erosion and finish off these areas. The old cart paths will also receive some well needed maintenance and attention. The bee eaters are nesting in the last bunker on the 4 th hole. This bunker has been made compulsory GUR during this time in order to protect these birds. The marquee has been removed and we will now spend a good deal of time getting the grass back to life in this area. We have earmarked this for a grass nursery which will allow us to sod bad fairway areas, repair/level tee boxes and grass bare surrounds. A practice area is also in the pipeline for there but still in the dreaming/planning phase. Lucy will be hosting the monthly Sunday Lunch tomorrow in the lapa area and members are encouraged to attend. Bookings can be made with reception. Golf News The next majors on our golfing calendar are The Green Jacket Masters (I.P.S) 8 th of April and the International Day (Boertjies v Souties) on the 30 th of April. These two events are going to be great fun and I encourage the members to partake. Congratulations to Jacques du Preez on being selected for the Mpumalanga country districts team that will compete at San Lameer during the week of the 15 th 19 th of May. White River has challenged Nelspruit golf club members during their Easter festival. They have requested that we attend their festival by partaking on Thursday the 13 th of April. The cost per player is R230 and the average of all Nelspruit members scores versus the White River members will determine the winner. Please book with White River directly. The Nomads Nationals was a great success and I was very proud of my team on the way they handled the 1536 rounds of golf in that week. Below are some interesting numbers for you to consume: Flying Fish ml Soda Water 835 Hansa 554 Glayva Liquer 704 Castle Light 5438 DBL GLENBRYNTH 1751 Castle Lite Draught 500ml 1645 GLENBRYNTH 1903 Black Label 427 GLENBRYNTH 12 Year Old ml Bon Aqua 1824 GLENBRYNTH Single Malt ml Powerade 225 Ned Cabernet 750ml ml Coke 2338 Ned Merlot 750ml ml Coke Zero 722 Ned Sav Blanc 750ml 269 Extracted units of consumed beverages The bar did a turnover of just over R for the week and the total profit generated from the event was around R Estate News A big thank you to the home owners for their understanding and support during the Nomads week. We understand that some inconvenience might have been caused but the value it brought to the club and the estate was well worth it. Again all, please adhere to the speed limits in the estate. We lost one of the duikers due to a vehicle accident. Ensure you are arriving for your game well before your scheduled tee off time (min 15min) Nelspruit Golf Club Monthly Newsletter APRIL
3 Out and About This section is for the member s funnies and interesting stories. Please send them to me or pass on the message to ensure we can all have a little chuckle with them, never at them. Andrew Bullen found out how it is to be a golf club administrator through the Nomads week as he watched the sun rise and sun set each day at the club. Well done Bully on a great event and please refrain from swimming in the ponds. Congratulations to the Lowveld Nomads team on winning the Bert Hunt trophy. This trophy until now had not been won by only one of the clubs that make up the Nationals. Home soil must count for something. A member was telling me that when asked if he was bringing his partner with on a golf tour he replied, No, that would be double the expense at half the fun. 5 Play Better Golf Alignment and Weight Transfer Imagine a set of railroad tracks leading to the hole. You want the clubface to be on the outer track, and your feet, hips, and shoulders on the inner track. If you re hitting with a long iron 5-iron, keep the ball slightly ahead of your center (toward your left foot if you re right-handed). The smaller the club number, the more you should move the ball forward on the track -- with your driver, the ball should be almost at your left heel. With high-numbered clubs, move your ball back never passing your center. Keep your knees flexed over your shoestrings as if you were about to complete a squat. Start your swing with your weight distributed evenly on each leg, but add more weight to your right when you take the club back. Throw this weight onto your left leg as you swing through the ball, allowing the clubs weight to pull you onto the left side to complete your swing. The Rule Book Play the ball as it lies, play the course as you find it, and if you cannot do either, do what is fair. But to do what is fair, you need to know the Rules of Golf. Again I will be explaining the hazard dropping procedure as some members still misunderstand the last point where the ball crosses the margin of the hazard. PLAYER A (Purple Line) Hits his ball from the 17 th tee and lands directly into the gorge. The last point where his ball crossed the margin of the hazard is yellow (at the tee) and he would need to keep the hazard between himself and the hole or re-tee with a new ball. (Rule26-1) PLAYER B (Black Line) Hits his ball from the 17 th tee carries the hazard, bounces short of the green and rolls back into the gorge. His last point where he crossed the margin is a lateral hazard (red). He can elect to drop up by the green as per the lateral water hazard options. (Rule 26-1c) Happy Endings The E.P.O Ron Chestna, 83 years of age was stopped by the police around 2 am and was asked where he was going at that time of the night. Ron Replied, I m on my way to a lecture about alcohol abuse and the effects it has on the human body, as well as smoking and staying out late. The officer asked, Really? Who s giving that lecture at this time of night? Ron replied, That would be my wife. True story from Scotland A group of ladies, having tee on the clubhouse patio, complained about a fourball using foul language on the 18 th green. It was discussed at a committee meeting and they decided to ban women from sitting on the patio. Scotsman has gun loaded with 2 bullets in a room with an Englishman, German and Russian. Who would he shoot?..the Englishman Twice!! To end The only thing in life achieved without effort is failure. Cheers for now, good golfing and keep it on the fairway!!!!
