President s Report It has been a very busy few months at our club. Since we had to make the hard decision to make the positions of head chef and manger redundant we have received the resignation of Wendy Preece and Jess Dickinson. Your Board is working very hard to restructure the club to make it more sustainable. The fact is our membership is not high enough to cover the cost of running the club. This has been the case for as long as I have been involved. We can say the fire has hurt the club but the truth is the legal action has been our biggest disappointment. We still await the final details of our claim from Maddens but please understand it is unlikely that we will receive any more money from the legal action. It is my hope that your Board will be in a position to give a full report to our next membership meeting in The membership renewals have been sent out and we trust you will support your club by paying your fees immediately. The next twelve months are going to be critical for your club. On a more positive note, we have appointed Rob McPherson as chef, Michelle Benson, Amy Hodge and Frank Giampaolo to look after the bar and functions. It is our belief that Rob will bring a new dimension to our catering. We look forward to reopening the Blue Wren Bistro in the near future along with a new menus for brunch, lunch and functions. I can t express to you strongly enough that your club needs your support in raising the extra funds needed to run the club. The club needs your support in either attending the Members Draw Carvery each month or having a pleasant brunch on Sundays. Hopefully we will be able to tell you that you can also have dinner in the Blue Wren Bistro very soon. The number of members who have gained their RSA certificate and are helping out in the Bar is very pleasing. Many more members are also volunteering to either help with cooking the Saturday BBQ, serving meals at functions and brunch, washing dishes and helping out on the course. We will overcome some of our difficulties with the efforts of all members. Rod and his staff have our course in first class condition week in week out. This month we again hosted the Southern Cross Golf Club during their fifty sixth year. The over whelming view of our visitors was that it is the best the course has been. The Southern Cross weekend, brunch on Sunday and Monday of the long weekend resulted in banking around $20,000 on Tuesday. I make no apology for those members that may have been inconvenienced on Sunday and Monday mornings in not being able to get onto the course. Your club needs every visitor we can attract to supplement our low membership fees. 1

2 I would also like to inform you that I have received the resignation of our Club Captain David Dickinson due to family reasons. On behalf of the Board I would like to thank David for the time spent as Captain and sponsorship coordinator. We wish David the best and look forward to seeing him around the club again soon. There have been 2 Monthly Medals and a Saturday Medal, the final of the WDGA Pennant, WDGA Foursomes (Canadian), helloworld classic and the Championships. Unfortunately we had to postpone the Fluoro Day event with bad weather and water on the greens. 3 Pennant winners were Horsham Blue who defeated Horsham Red 3-2 in a very close battle at Horsham. Two matches finished on the 18 th hole, one on the 19 th hole and one on the 21 st hole. WDGA President, John Lacey presented the winning team with their pennant, cup and badges. This little fellow was crossing the 9 th fairway during the Mens Championships Wendy Preece is presented with a beautiful vase and flowers at the May Members Draw Some of the Mother s Day Luncheon patrons Course Development Committee Most members of the Course Development Committee are away at the moment and there was not a quorum to conduct a formal meeting in June. However, those Committee members who were available met on Tuesday 7 June, 2016 for a brief discussion. Key matters discussed at were as follows: An intense spray program has continued on outbreaks of Pig Face on the sides of the fairway. The front nine around to and including the 7 th fairway (both sides) have been completed to date. Outbreaks of Bridle Creeper have also been noticed during this spraying program. While these have also been sprayed with round-up, it is likely the only way to deal with this invasive weed is to spade out the roots and bulbs. This is now a priority as this is a fast growing weed and needs immediate attention to avoid it becoming a major problem. 5

6 It was questioned whether the Crafter Mogford Strategy was still the approved development strategy for the golf course; given the Club s difficult financial position and that it is likely there will be several years before funds will be available to implement some of the actions. There are areas around the course where no works have been undertaken as they would become redundant when the development actions in the strategy are implemented. Tree planting is an example. There are areas around the course which are currently dangerous to players and some tree planting could minimize the risks of injury. The back of the 10 th green between the green and the 11 th tee is an example. It was agreed a Board Paper be prepared seeking approval to plant trees in such areas, acknowledging that these may need to be removed at a later date when the strategy actions are implemented. Peter Jackson, Chairman, Course Development Committee Course Beautification - Information for Members You may have noticed the new wooden fence behind the 1 st Tee and the planting of eight shrubs on the roadside of the fence. These shrubs will not only in time develop into a very attractive area, but will also create a pleasant entry to the Golf Course for Members and Visitors. Thanks must go to the Ground Staff and Volunteers who had to dig down quite a way to make sure the couch grass was completely removed. Fresh soil filled the hole ready for Joyce Mills to purchase and plant the shrubs. Pebbles were spread around the plants which gave the area a very pleasing finish. All this was made possible by the following ladies who donated a total of $80 for the purchase of the plants. Kirki Smith, Alison Radcliffe, Elizabeth Robertson, June Gross, Pat Brooksby, Marg Moore, Cheryl Breuer and Fran O Brien..Thank you Ladies. I believe the next area for beautification is the 10 th Tee. More news on that later on. Monday Social Ladies Monday golf continues to attract up to 30 ladies weekly...weather permitting. We are happy to welcome any new players as well as those returning from injury or absence from the game. It was especially pleasing to note the numbers of ladies participating in the recent Club Championships who have come through this group. Special mentions to: B Grade Scratch Champion - Kerrie Chamberlain, Handicap Winner - Kerrin Smith, C Grade Scratch Champion - Joy Tonkin and Handicap Winner - Joy Pretlove. Well done to you all for giving the Stroke rounds a go and bumping up the fields! Our group this year has decided to assist financially towards the beautification of the Course and surrounds. We have paid Joyce Mills for 490 new trees. We have also paid the cost of the two ornamental pot plants to put in the pots that were donated by Di Hayes at the entrance to the Clubhouse, which we hope all members have noticed and admired! This is a tangible and important contribution to our Club. Julie Obst 6

7 Early Bird Report We are now well into June with Monday/Friday fields still in the top twenty and thirties and growing, even with the grey nomads going north. For those who have just joined the Early Birds Monday/Friday welcome and please continue to come each Monday/Friday forget the cold and wet. It was decided that for the winter months the hit off times for both Monday/Friday will be 9.00am. This will help when we get a heavy frost as cart operators are reminded that on these days carts may not venture onto the course until the frost thaws. We invite all golfers to play Ambrose with teams of four or three each Monday. Please report 8.30am but no later than 8.45am for hit off at 9.00am and also on Fridays for Stableford report 8.30am but no later than 8.45am for hit off at 9.00am. (Each Friday the winner receives a $10 club voucher, runner up and a blind draw a $5 voucher). We pay a $5 game fee each day which contributes towards the club funds and special projects.. The Early Birds have injected and additional $ into Club funds since January and since instigation the game fee in late 2010 a total of over $28, has been contributed. So if you would like to help with the Club finances come join us any time you are free on a Monday/Friday morning. Friday Stableford counts for individual daily handicap and in conjunction with the Early Birds Annual Stableford Aggregate (Best 20 scores for the year). Sixty five players took part in the aggregate this year and was hotly contested. Congratulations to the winner of the Early Birds Annual Trophy for the third time Graeme Moncrieff and was closely followed by Bob Lockwood. Top of the leader board so far this year is Alex Stewart and Denis Pye.
