Air Force Golf Program Rated Among Nation s Best In the September 2007 issue of Golf Digest magazine, the Air Force golf program was rated among the nation's best, tabbed 44th in the nation in the overall ranking. As part of its third annual College Golf Guide, Golf Digest ranked the country's best colleges with NCAA men's and women's golf teams. The College Golf Guide was designed to help high school students find the right school for their needs. There are three separate rankings that comprise the Guide: Balanced ranking, for students who place equal emphasis on school and sports; Golf First ranking, for students with dreams of playing golf professionally; and Academics First ranking, for students who are focused on education but still desire to play competitive golf. The "Balanced" ranking is the best indicator for the majority of young men and women heading off to college. Air Force, one of just three Mountain West Conference schools rated in the top 50 in the Balanced ranking, leads the MWC in the Academics First ranking at 39. Meanwhile, the Falcons also rate in the top 100 in the Golf First ranking, coming in at 94. Five criteria form the basis of the rankings: a college golf team's adjusted scoring average, Player Growth while on the team, academics, climate and facilities/coaches. In establishing the rankings, Golf Digest rated almost 800 NCAA men's colleges and more than 500 women's colleges in the five categories mentioned above. The Falcons rate among the top 10 percent in the nation in facilities/coaches, the top 20 percent in academics and the top 30 percent in adjusted scoring average. 5 2008 SPRING OUTLOOK Despite losing one of its best golfers in program history, 2007 graduate Tyler Goulding, the Air Force golf team is looking forward to a successful season in the spring of George Koury is in his sixth season as the team s head coach and has done a solid job of recruiting. He is stacking the team with young talent that he expects will lead the team for the next two or three years. This season, Air Force is using a diverse lineup, from freshmen to seniors, to lead the team. The 2008 senior class includes Bob Whitney, Jared Freeman and Matt Tanis. Whitney is the returning senior with the most experience, competing in 26 tournaments over his first three and a half seasons. Freeman has been a significant contributor on the Falcons second team, while Tanis has also seen some action in Air Force s top five. While the Falcons junior class is just two deep, Shaun O Bryant and Andrew Gibson have stepped up as two of Air Force s leaders. O Bryant, the Falcons team captain this season, moved into the Falcons starting five as a sophomore and is now one of the top performers for Air Force. Meanwhile, Gibson has consistently remained one of Air Force s top five golfers and will help lead the Falcons in Leading the sophomore class for Air Force is Tom Whitney, who has already set records in just his second season. Whitney, the Service Academy Golf Classic medalist in 2006, has recorded tournament scores of 214 or better seven times in his short career, despite not competing in the spring of Whitney has also been the Falcons top performer in eight of 13 events. His third-round score of 65 at the 2007 Agua Caliente tied a school record for lowest individual round, while his three-round total of 202 at the event set a new Air Force record. Rounding out the sophomore class are Lucas Catalano, Peter Guzowski, Josh McFarland and Jason Shank, who have seen limited action on the Falcons second team. Meanwhile, Air Force has a few freshmen that have already seen action for the Falcons. Kyle Bailey and Aaron White both saw action in the fall of 2007, with Bailey leading the Blue team at the Agua Caliente, while White competed in four events for the Falcons, including a pair of tournaments as a member of the varsity squad. Other members of the freshman class include Brendan Gaughan and Kyle Hagen. The Falcons 2008 spring schedule features a lineup of solid tournaments, beginning with the UTSA Intercollegiate, hosted by UT-San Antonio, Feb Air Force faces some of the top teams in the nation at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship, March 7-9, hosted by UNLV. The Falcons finished in 11th place for the weekend, as Wichita State defeated Iowa State in a playoff for the team title and the event saw a new individual record for the second-straight season as Wichita State s Ryan Spears fired a 203 for the tournament. Leading the way for Air Force at the Falcon Invitational was junior Andrew Gibson, who placed tied for 19th at 218 (+2). Classmate Shaun O Bryant finished a stroke behind in a tie for 29th place, while Bob Whitney, Jack Kasting and Tom Whitney also competed for the varsity team. Meanwhile, senior Matt Tanis led the Air Force Blue team, finishing tied for 55th at 226. Next up for the Falcons was the William H. Tucker Invitational, hosted by New Mexico. This time, O Bryant was the top performer for Air Force, which finished 16th at the event. O Bryant posted a score of 228 to tie for 54th place, while Bob Whitney, Gibson, Kasting and Tom Whitney rounded out the group for the Falcons. Following the Tucker Invitational, Air Force headed to the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, hosted by Kansas State. Tom Whitney registered his first top-10 finish of the season to lead the Falcons, who placed eighth. Tom Whitney tied for eighth in the event with a score of 223, while Kasting and O Bryant were next for Air Force, tying for 40th place. Also competing for the Falcons were Gibson and Bob Whitney. Less than a week later, the Falcons headed to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Shootout at Angel Park. Air Force, which finished eighth in the field of 17, was again led by Tom Whitney. He finished tied for 10th with a mark of 214 (+1), followed by Gibson at 221. Freshmen Aaron White and Kasting also competed, while O Bryant suffered a first-round disqualification. Air Force then returned to the annual Wolf Pack Classic, hosted by Nevada. The Falcons, led again by Tom Whitney, finished 15th overall. Tom Whitney posted his best finish of the fall, tying for second at 211 (-5). Also competing for Air Force at the Wolf Pack Classic were O Bryant, White, Gibson and Kasting. Next up for the Falcons was the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational, hosted by San Diego State. Air Force, which placed 14th, was led by Kasting, who tied for 37th in the individual standings. Bob and Tom Whitney tied for 57th overall, while O Bryant and Gibson rounded out the group for the Falcons. The Falcons wrapped up the 2007 fall season at their own Agua Caliente AFA Collegiate Invitational, being held in Palm Springs, Calif. The inaugural event proved to be a record-setter as 10 of the 11 teams competing turned in belowpar scores for the weekend. Four golfers set new course records of 63, led by Colorado State s Dustin Morris, who was an impressive 22-under-par for the tournament. Air Force finished eighth overall, setting a new school record for lowest team tournament score (54 holes) at 840 (-24). Leading the way was Tom Whitney, a native of nearby La Quinta, Calif., who set an individual school record with a mark of 202. The sophomore, who also tied a school record for lowest individual score in a single round (65), finished in a tie for 11th place. O Bryant and Gibson turned in marks of 210 and 211, respectively, which rank among the 20 lowest individual tournament scores in school history. Rounding out the varsity team for the Falcons at the Agua Caliente were Bob Whitney and Kasting, while freshman Kyle Bailey led the Blue team with a personal-best score of 216 (E). 7 HEAD COACH GEORGE KOURY GEORGE KOURY Head Coach Sixth Season USAFA 93 George Koury is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Academy's golf program. Koury is no stranger to Air Force golf. Before becoming the head coach, he spent three seasons as an assistant, working with both the varsity and the junior varsity programs. He was also a member of the Falcon golf team from , serving as team captain and earning MVP honors his final year. At the start of the season, Koury took over for legendary coach Gene Miranda, who had spent 25 years at the helm of the Falcons' program. The transition from assistant to head coach has been seamless for Koury. "Being around Miranda for so long and as organized as he was, made it a pretty smooth transition," Koury said. "He had everything set up for me to slide right in and take over." Koury has found success early in his stint with Air Force. He has helped the Falcons continue their unprecedented success at the annual Service Academy Golf Classic, bringing home the championship trophy in each season at the helm of the program. In the fall of 2005, he helped guide Air Force to a first-place finish at the season-opening Falcon Invitational, marking the team s first outright championship at their own tournament since Koury has also THE KOURY FILE Year at Air Force: Sixth Alma Mater: USAFA, 1993 been successful in recruiting, College Athletics: bringing in several Golf, USAFA players that have started as freshmen, including Coaching Experience: Head Coach, USAFA, 2002-pres graduate Assistant Coach, USAFA, Tyler Goulding, who ranks among the most successful golfers in Academy history. Koury graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1993 with a degree in engineering mechanics and was stationed in San Antonio, Texas, serving as a research and development engineer for robotics technologies. In 1996, he moved to Okinawa, Japan, and served as a civil engineer prior to returning to the Academy in June of Koury is married to the former Jacki Thomas and has two children, David (6) and Hannah (3). 8 SUPPORT STAFF LT. COL. BRANDON DOAN Assistant Coach Third Season USAFA 92 Lt. Col. Brandon Doan is in his third season as the men's golf assistant coach. Doan graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1992 with a degree in Human Factors Engineering and subsequently earned a Ph.D. in Human Bioenergetics from Ball State University. While at the Academy, he was a four-year letter winner in golf from , and was team MVP and team captain. In addition to assistant golf coaching duties, Doan teaches physical education and biology and is the director of the Academy s Human Performance Lab. He is proficient in biomechanical analysis, sports vision training, the measurement of maximal oxygen uptake, heart rates, upper and lower body peak muscular power, body composition, and pulmonary function testing. Doan has authored over 50 scientific publications and has conducted research projects exploring the effects of sleep deprivation, performance enhancing interventions and hypoxia on cognitive, physical, and military operational performance as well as the biomechanics of sport performance. Doan lives at the Air Force Academy with his wife, Tammy, son Ethan, and daughters Lexi and Addisyn. Maj. Doan in the Human Performance Lab, along with Al Wile and former cadet athletes Antoine Hood (basketball) and Denver Saunders (water polo). COL. GUNTHER MUELLER Officer Representative Col. Gunther A. Mueller, the golf team s officer representative, was appointed permanent professor of foreign languages in 1991 and is currently serving as the head of the department of foreign languages. A distinguished graduate from the ROTC, he was commissioned in 1969 after completing a bachelor s degree at West Virginia University. Mueller entered active duty as an intelligence officer in 1970 after completing a master s degree in German literature. His intelligence officer assignments include Vandenberg AFB, Calif., U-Tapao Air Base, Thailand, Goose Air Base, Canada, and US EUCOM HQ, Germany. He attended Squadron Officer s School and Air Command and Staff College in residence and completed the Air War College Seminar Program. In 1977, he was selected to attend Ohio State University in an AFIT-sponsored PhD program, which he completed as a distinguished graduate in only 23 months. Mueller s military decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the USAF Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. Mueller has two children, Catherine and Scott, and three grandchildren, Mason, Sydney and Cooper AIR FORCE GOLF

15 2007 SPRING REVIEW Andrew Gibson Goulding posted his best individual finish of the spring season to lead Air Force, tying for sixth overall with a score of 211. Rounding out the group for the Falcons were O Bryant, Follett, Gibson and Freeman. The Falcons concluded the year at the 2007 Mountain West Conference Men s Golf Championship, being held for the first time at the Tucson National Catalina Course in Tucson, Ariz. While the Falcons turned in a solid score of 298 on the opening day of competition, the team struggled in the second and third rounds, finishing ninth in the conference with a total of 924. BYU took the team title to snap New Mexico s four-year winning streak, while UNLV placed second. Completing the team standings were TCU, Colorado State, San Diego State, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. Goulding, later named to the all-conference team for the second time in his career, was the top finisher for the Falcons once more, tying for 26th place with a 221. Gibson, O Bryant, Whitney and Follett rounded out the group of competitors. While the Air Force s season did not end the way it had hoped, the team did see some success in the season. Air Force extended its dominance at the Service Academy Golf Classic, winning an unprecented 12thstraight team title. Goulding, a three-time MVP for the Falcons and NCAA competitor in 2005, closed out his career as one of the team s most consistent golfers. He shot 214 or better 12 times in his career, more than any other golfer in school history. Competing in every varsity event for the Falcons during his four-year career, Goulding was the team s top performer in 30 different tournaments. Although the Falcons will miss the success of Goulding, the team has made great strides and looks to continue its improvement in the season. Following a solid fall season in 2006, the Air Force golf team aimed for a productive spring season to finish out the year. Senior team captain Tyler Goulding, one of the most successful golfers in Air Force history, hoped to close out his career as a Falcon on a high note. Air Force traveled to San Antonio, Texas, to kick off the 2007 spring schedule at the UTSA Intercollegiate. With sophomore Shaun O Bryant leading the way, the Falcons finished 14th. O Bryant posted his best finish of the year, firing a 218 to tie for fifth place. Sophomore Andrew Gibson and Goulding tied for 29th overall, while junior Jared Freeman and senior Chad Follett also competed for the Falcons. Meanwhile, junior Matt Tanis competed as an individual, finishing in a tie for 57th place. Next up was a trip to the USF Triumph, hosted by San Francisco. The Falcons, led by Goulding and O Bryant, finished tied for 13th with a score of 905. Goulding and O Bryant each tied for 29th place overall with a score of 222. Rounding out the competition for Air Force were Follett, Gibson and Tanis. The Falcons headed to the annual Ron Moore Invitational in Goodyear, Ariz., hosted by Denver. Finishing 15th with a score of 886, Air Force was led by Goulding, who fired a personal-best score of 209 to finish tied for eighth place. Goulding s score ranks tied for third on the list of lowest individual tournament scores in school history. Also competing for the Falcons were O Bryant, Gibson, Follett and junior Bob Whitney. Next, Air Force headed back to the CU-Stevinson Ranch Invitational, finishing 14th in the team standings. Goulding, who shot a 222, tied for eighth place overall for the second-straight week to lead the Falcons. O Bryant tied for 45th place, while Whitney finished in a tie for 50th place. Rounding out the group for Air Force were Gibson and Follett. The Falcons next tournament was the Cowboy Classic, hosted by Wyoming in Scottsdale, Ariz. Led by O Bryant, the Falcons finished 19th overall, turning in a three-round score of 884. O Bryant fired a score of 216 to finish tied for 36th place, while Goulding came in two strokes behind in a tie for 46th place. Whitney, Gibson and Freeman also represented the Falcons, while Tanis competed as an individual. The team closed out the regular season at the PING Golf Cougar Classic, hosted by BYU. 16 MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West Conference has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MWC continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. Now in its seventh year, the MWC has been assertive in its involvement with the NCAA governance structure and has taken a leadership role in the overall administration of intercollegiate athletics. The Mountain West Conference was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions -- Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming -- decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from the former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Five of the MWC's eight members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (BYU, Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV entered the fold in 1996 and TCU began its first year of competition in , completing the membership in the MWC as it stands today. 18 EISENHOWER GOLF COURSE Eisenhower Golf Course at the Academy has won acclaim as being one of the best courses in Colorado. Nestled in the razorback foothills of the Rampart Range, the blue course was first opened in It is named after former President Dwight. D. Eisenhower, who took part in the dedication ceremony. Home to the annual Falcon Invitational (formerly the Pikes Peak Invitational), the course has been challenged by some of golf s best players including Jay Don Blake, Hale Irwin, Tim Herron, Steve Jones, Jimmy Demaret, Tom Kite, Johnny Miller, Andy North, Mike Reid, Sam Snead, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods. Eisenhower has been recognized by a few major publications. Sports Illustrated, Golf Digest and Golf Week have all named Eisenhower as one of the 10 best golf courses on a college campus, while Golf Digest also ranked the blue course as the third-best course in Colorado. Eddie Ainsworth is the Director of Golf at the Eisenhower Golf Club. EISENHOWER BLUE COURSE A typical beautiful Robert Trent Jones, Sr., design with large greens, long teeing grounds and fairway bunkers requiring 250-yard carry, the blue course is much like other mountain courses having very fast greens with the dominant break and speed coming away from the mountains. The par 72 can be stretched to over 7,300 yards but the 7,000-foot elevation makes it play much shorter. Other unique characteristics include no outof-bounds and only a few small water hazards. It is shorter than the Blue but makes up for its lack of length with fast, tricky greens, narrow fairways and many hazards. It is built in a beautiful setting with many spectacular mountain views and a view of the cadet chapel. 19 SERVICE ACADEMY GOLF CLASSIC Simply put, Air Force has dominated the competition in the Service Academy Golf Classic, an event that is the equivalent to the battle for the Commander-in-Chief s Trophy in football. With its victory in 2006, the Falcons have now won the Reemtsma Trophy, awarded to the service academies champion, for 12 consecutive years. After taking a break in the season, the Service Academy Golf Classic is slated to return in the spring of In the last SAGC, held in the fall of 2006, Air Force golfers claimed the top two spots and five of the top 10 individual finishes, to finish 11 strokes ahead of second-place Army. Capturing medalist honors, with a personal best score of 210, was freshman Tom Whitney, becoming the first Air Force golfer to win the event since Adam Wasinger in Meanwhile, senior Tyler Goulding finished second at 215 to help lead the Falcons to their 12th-straight title at the SAGC. Bill Reemtsma, a 1963 Air Force Academy graduate, conceived the idea for the Service Academy Classic. Reemtsma passed away after the second tournament was played in 1994 but supporters of the tournament that he launched have developed it into a major event on the Air Force golf schedule. Among those who played integral roles in continuing the tournament in Reemtsma s name were his wife Joy, his children, Maj. Gen. Edmund Rafalko (former athletic director at the Air Force Academy), former Air Force golfer Ben Leestma ( 02) was a four-time medalist at the Service Academy Golf Classic. Jeff Wilson and alumni from the other service academies Also playing key roles in the tournament s survival are Jerry Ahmann, who was a classmate of Reemtsma s in the Air Force class of 63, Dave Brigman (AF class of 1970) and former USAFA athletic director Ken Schweitzer. Ahmann, who lettered two seasons in football for the Falcons ( ) and Brigman are airline pilots living in the Dallas area. Several service academy dignitaries are also involved with the Classic, including 1998 chairpersons Doc Blanchard, USMA 47; Glen Davis, USMA 47 and Chad Hennings, USAFA 88. Navy graduate and former Dallas Cowboy great Roger Staubach presented Air Force with the Reemtsma Trophy at the 1998 awards banquet. The Classic, held in the Dallas area for its first 14 years, will now move to the Washington, D.C., area for the season in an effort to expand the event. 20 FALCON INVITATIONAL For nearly 40 years, some of the best golfers in the college ranks have come to the Academy to participate in the annual Falcon Invitational. The 54-hole tournament is held in September on the Eisenhower (Blue) Course and features teams from all over the country. In 2003, the event was named the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, in honor of the legendary coach who headed up the Air Force program for 25 years. In 2005, the Falcons captured the team title, marking their first outright win since the inaugural event in Many current PGA tour golfers played in the Falcon Invitational, or its predecessors, the Rocky Mountain and Pikes Peak Invitationals, when they were in college. They include Jay Don Blake, the winner of the 1980 tournament, Steve Jones, Jonathan Kaye, 1992 co-champion, Keith Clearwater and David Hearn. 21 AGUA CALIENTE AFA COLLEGIATE INVITATIONAL The Agua Caliente Air Force Academy Collegiate Invitational made its debut in the fall of The inaugural event was held Nov at the 6,582- yard, par-72 Indian Canyons Golf Resort in Palm Springs, Calif. A total of 11 teams and 54 individuals competed in the first Agua Caliente Invitational during a record-shattering weekend. Four different players, including medalist Dustin Morris of Colorado State, turned in rounds of 63 to tie for the course record. In addition, all but one team finished under par for the tournament. The Falcons set records of their own at the Agua Caliente, including the lowest team and individual tournament scores (54-holes) in school history. Air Force notched a team score of 840 (-24), breaking its previous record of 851 set in Meanwhile, sophomore Tom Whitney, a native of nearby La Quinta, Calif., registered the lowest individual tournament score in school history, while tying the single-round low score. Whitney s third round score of 65 tied the low-round mark set by Chris Young in In addition, Whitney finished with a total of 202 (-14), besting the previous low individual tournament score of 204, set in Juniors Shaun O Bryant and Andrew Gibson also posted impressive numbers on the weekend, finishing at 210 and 211, respectively, for personalbest scores. 23 FALCON ALL-AMERICANS KEVIN BENCH 1974 Honorable Mention JEFF SOGARD 1976 Honorable Mention RICK SARGENT 1979 Honorable Mention 1980 Third Team A two-time team MVP, Bench became the Falcons first All-American in A two-time NCAA Championship qualifier, Bench s greatest moment came in 1974, when he won the Pacific Coast Invitational with a 221. Bench defeated some of the top players in the nation including USC s Craig Stadler, the defending national amateur champion. He had an impressive stroke average that year as well. Sogard became the second Falcon to win the RMIGA Championship when he placed first in the 1976 tournament. His stroke average was almost two strokes lower than anyone else on the team. In 1976, he had the Falcons lowest score in 10 tournaments or duals. The Academy s first two-time All-American in golf, Sargent placed second in the 1979 Rocky Mountain IGA Championships, earning him a trip to the NCAA Championships. In 1980, he earned another NCAA bid, this time winning the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate. JUDD McGLOHN 1984 Honorable Mention CHARLIE WAHL GTE Academic; 1993 NCAA Postgraduate Award JASON VITAS 1993 GTE Academic McGlohn, the lone three-time team MVP, remains the only Falcon to ever win the WAC Championship. In his senior season in 1985, he shot a 218 ( ) at the Cheyenne C.C. to lead the Falcons to a fifth-place finish. In 1982, McGlohn s stroke average was among the Falcons best as he qualified for the NCAAs as a freshman. Wahl s 3.67 grade point average and his stroke average in 1992 allowed him to become the Air Force golf program s first Academic All- American. On the links, Wahl had many impressive performances, setting the Academy 54-hole record with a six-under-par 210 at the 1991 Robert Holmes Intercollegiate, a score which now ranks tied for fifth in the Air Force record book. A four-time WAC Scholar-Athlete, Vitas was cocaptain of the team. His stroke average that year ranked him second on the team. BEN LEESTMA 2002 All-America Scholar SCOTT REDMOND 2005 All-America Scholar Leestma, named a 2002 Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar by the GCAA, had one of the most prolific careers of any Air Force golfer. A finalist for the inaugural Byron Nelson Award in 2002, his seven tournament wins are an Academy record. Leestma also won an unprecedented four consecutive tournament titles at the Service Academy Classic. As a senior, he was ranked fourth in the Mountain West with a 72.5 per round stroke average. He was a two-time academic all-conference honoree and was a two-time selection to the all-conference team. Redmond became the latest Air Force golfer to be named a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar by the GCAA. The Falcons team captain as a junior, Redmond helped Air Force to victory in three Service Academy Golf Classics, as well as the team title at the 2005 Falcon Invitational. 26 U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY The United States Air Force Academy offers a four-year program of instruction and experience designed to provide cadets the knowledge and character essential for leadership, and the motivation to serve as Air Force career officers. Each cadet graduates with a bachelor of science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. COURSE OF STUDY Cadets are exposed to a balanced curriculum that provides a general and professional foundation essential to a career Air Force officer. Special needs of future Air Force officers are met by professionally oriented courses, including human physiology, computer science, economics, military history, astronautics, law and political science. The core curriculum includes courses in science, engineering, social sciences and humanities. Cadets take additional elective courses to complete requirements for one of 25 major areas of study. About 60 percent of the cadets complete majors in science and engineering; the other 40 percent graduate in the social sciences and humanities. Some of the most popular majors include management, astronautical engineering, international affairs and political science, history, behavioral science, civil engineering, aeronautical engineering, electrical engineering and engineering mechanics. FACULTY COMPOSITION The majority of the Academy's nearly 600 faculty members are Air Force officers. They are selected primarily from career-officer volunteers who have established outstanding records of performance and dedication. Each has at least a master's degree and more than 35 percent have doctorates. In addition to imparting knowledge, each faculty member must assist with the development of character and qualities of leadership essential to future Air Force career officers and the motivation of service to country. To provide greater contributions by a diverse faculty, the Academy has several distinguished civilian professors and associate professors who serve one or more years. Officers from other services are members of the faculty as well, and a small number of officers from allied countries teach in the foreign language, history and political science departments. Distinguished civilian and military lecturers also share their expertise with the cadets during the academic year. ATHLETIC PROGRAM The Academy's athletic program is designed to improve physical fitness, teach athletic skills and develop leadership qualities. To achieve its goals, the Academy offers some of the most extensive physical education, intramural sports and intercollegiate athletic programs in the nation. Cadets take at least three different physical education courses each year. MILITARY EDUCATION AND TRAINING An aerospace-oriented military education, training and leadership program begins with basic cadet training and continues throughout the four years. Seniors are responsible for the leadership of the cadet wing, while juniors and sophomores perform lower-level leadership and instructional tasks. Cadets are projected into as many active leadership roles as possible to prepare them to be effective Air Force officers. Fundamental concepts of military organization -- drill, ethics, honor, Air Force heritage and physical training -- are emphasized the first summer during basic cadet training. Freshmen then study the military role in U.S. society as well as the mission and organization of the Air Force. Sophomores receive instruction in communicative skills, and juniors study the combat and operational aspects of the Air Force. Military studies for the senior class focus on military thought. The Academy offers courses in flying, navigation, soaring and parachuting, building from basic skills to instructor duties. Cadets may fly light aircraft with the Cadet Flying Team. Those not qualified for flight training must enroll in a basic aviation course. Astronomy and advanced navigation courses also are available. Students bound for pilot training enroll in the flight screening program at the Academy and fly the DA-20 Katana aircraft. Summer training for cadets is divided into three, three-week training periods. There are a variety of programs available, and each cadet is required to complete two training periods each summer with leave during the other period. All new cadets take six weeks of basic cadet training in their first summer. Combat survival training is a required three-week program during cadets' second summer. For other second-summer training periods, cadets have options such as working with young airmen in an operational unit at an Air Force installation, airborne parachute training, soaring or basic free-fall parachute training. During their last two summers, all cadets are offered leadership training as supervisors or instructors in summer programs, such as basic cadet training, survival training, freefall parachuting and soaring. Extracurricular activities also are an integral part of the education program. The cadet ski club, drum and bugle corps, cadet chorale and forensics are a few of the programs available. NOMINATIONS Nominations to the Academy may be obtained through a congressional sponsor or by meeting eligibility criteria in other categories of competition established by law. For information on admission procedures, write to HQ USAFA/RRS; 2304 Cadet Drive, Suite 200; USAF Academy, CO HISTORY -- In 1948, a board of leading civilian and military educators was appointed to plan the curriculum for an academy that would meet the needs of the newly established Air Force. The board determined that Air Force requirements could not be met by expanding the other service academies and recommended an Air Force academy be established without delay. In 1949, then Secretary of the Air Force W. Stuart Symington appointed a commission to assist in selecting a site and on April 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized creation of the United States Air Force Academy. After considering 580 sites in 45 states, the commission narrowed the choice to three locations. The summer of 1954, Secretary of the Air Force Harold Talbott selected a site near Colorado Springs, Colo. Colorado contributed $1 million toward purchase of the property. In July 1955, the first academy class entered interim facilities at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, while construction began. It was sufficiently completed for occupancy by the cadet wing in late August Initial construction cost was $142 million. 27 U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY ADMINISTRATION Lieutenant General John F. Regni is superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo. He directs a four-year academic, military training, athletic and character development program leading to a bachelor's degree and commission as an Air Force officer. The general was commissioned in the Air Force following graduation from the U.S. Air Force Academy in His career has encompassed a wide range of personnel, training and command assignments, and he has served at base, numbered air force, major command, Air Staff and joint unified command levels. Prior to his stint at the Academy, he served as Commander, Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. The general s military awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with silver oak leaf cluster and Air Force Commendation Medal. 28 ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT ADMINISTRATION Dr. Hans J. Mueh is in his fourth year as the director of athletics at the Air Force Academy. A retired Air Force brigadier general, Mueh was vice dean of faculty for two years prior to his retirement in the summer of In addition, he was the Academy's faculty athletics representative from Before assuming his duties as vice dean, Mueh was permanent professor and head of the department of chemistry at the Academy, a position he held since October 1987 where he oversaw the annual design and instruction of 25 undergraduate courses for 1,500 cadets annually. Mueh was born Jan. 8, 1944, in Celle, Germany, and emigrated to the United States in He entered the Air Force in 1962 as a member of the Academy's eighth graduating class, and he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in While at the Academy, Mueh was a two-year letterwinner in soccer as a goalie. He still holds the Academy record for saves in a game with 30, accomplishing it twice in 1965 against North Carolina and Benedictine. In his junior and senior years, Mueh helped the Falcons to the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Soccer League championship and quarterfinal berths in the NCAA tournament. Following graduation, Mueh completed two assignments in intelligence before attending the University of Wisconsin where he earned his master's degree in chemistry in He later earned a doctorate degree in chemistry from Wisconsin in 1976 as a distinguished graduate. He has also completed Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College and Air War College. Between earning the two degrees, Mueh returned to the Academy as an instructor in the department of chemistry from He also served as assistant soccer coach and played semi-pro soccer with the Aurora Internationals in Denver during those two years, leading the Internationals to the Colorado state title in He volunteered for duty in Vietnam and served as an intelligence officer in Saigon, Republic of Vietnam and at Nakhon Phanom RTAB, Thailand, in 1972 and After earning his doctorate degree, Mueh returned to the Academy in 1976 as an associate professor of chemistry. He remained at the Academy except for a stint in as the special assistant for technical matters at the Defense Intelligence Agency at the Pentagon. In 1986, he assumed the position of acting head, department of chemistry, before being selected for his position of permanent professor and head of the department of chemistry in As faculty athletics representative, he was active in both the Western Athletic Conference and Mountain West Conference, and was the Academy's representative on the transition team to form the new MWC, the only faculty athletics representative on the team. He is currently the chairman of Region VII for the NCAA's Postgraduate Scholarship Committee, covering 119 schools, and has served in that capacity for five years. He competes in golf, racquetball, volleyball, handball and tennis, and has promoted Air Force Academy intercollegiate sports throughout his tenure, beginning with work as chairman of the hockey eligibility committee, officer representative to the men's golf team and five years as the officer representative to the football team. 29 ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT Few schools in the country have an athletic program as extensive as the Air Force Academy's. The goals of the athletic program are to enhance the physical conditioning of all cadets, to develop the physical skills necessary for officership, to teach leadership in a competitive environment and to build character. There are three subdivisions of the athletic program: intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and physical education. The intercollegiate program has 17 men's and 10 women's NCAA-sanctioned teams, facing some of the top competition in the nation. Men s teams are football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey, cross-country, fencing, golf, gymnastics, indoor and outdoor track, lacrosse, rifle, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling. The Academy fields women's teams in basketball, cross-country, fencing, gymnastics, rifle, indoor and outdoor track, swimming and diving, soccer, tennis and volleyball. In addition, the Academy sponsors two non-ncaa programs; boxing and cheerleading. The USAFA Cadet Field House is one of the most impressive buildings in the country. It s a modern, versatile structure with seemingly endless uses. The $5.6 million building is five stories high and 396 feet by 426 feet, the size of three football fields laid side by side. The structure is divided into three areas--basketball arena, ice hockey arena and multipurpose area. The three sections have a combined seating capacity of 11,000. Clune Arena seats 5,939. The Cadet Ice Rink has a seating capacity of 2,502, while the multipurpose area seats 1,000 fans for track and field competitions. The majority of the Academy s men s and women s programs compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons compete in this conference against teams from Brigham Young, New Mexico, Colorado State, San Diego State, TCU, Wyoming, Utah and UNLV. All sports also compete against nonconference opponents, including many nationally-ranked teams. The football team competes annually for the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, which is emblematic of service academy football supremacy. The Falcons have won the trophy 16 times, which is more than Army and Navy combined. The winner of the annual rivalry visits with White House to have the trophy presented by the President of the United States. Falcon Stadium open on Sept. 22, The stadium was originally built solely for football, but non-athletic events like the Academy s annual graduation ceremonies are also conducted there. The newest modification to the stadium was completed in the spring of 2006 with fieldturf. Falcon Stadium has a seating capacity of 46, AIR FORCE GOLF 27
