Malahide Golf Club FORE! Magazine - September 2011 THE MALAHIDE LEINSTER FOURSOMES TEAM THE MALAHIDE LEINSTER FOURSOMES TEAM COURSE REPORT / CLUBS / OTHER NEWS TIP FROM THE PRO THE LOB SHOT TEAMS / GOLF RULE / LOCAL RULE PHOTO GALLERY JUVENILE NEWS RECIPE / AD THE MALAHIDE LEINSTER FOURSOMES TEAM WINNERS OF THE LEINSTER FINAL 2011 On Sunday 28th August our Ladies took part in the Leinster Final of the ILGU Senior Foursomes against Dun Laoghaire Golf Club at Craddockstown. It was a tremendously close match that finally came down to the final putt on the final green. Alison Taylor (2) and Olive Shannon (15) got Malahide off to a great start winning the first match on a 6 & 4 score-line. Dun Laoghaire then took the second match beating our own Sally Casey (7) and Noreen Farrell (10) to even up the match. It should be noted that, while Sally and Noreen may have lost on this occasion, it was their win on the 20th hole in the Semi-Final that got Malahide through to the Final in the first place. That left the pressure on our final pair of Lily Owens (5) and Rosemary Byrne (13) but we need not have worried as these ladies revel under pressure even in the face of a Referees decision that delayed the completion of the match for some minutes. Once the ruling was made, Lily took very little time in rolling in what can only be described as a Magnificent Putt in the circumstances. It was a superb victory when you consider that the Dun Laoghaire team was made up of six single handicap ladies. The campaign started with a qualifying round in Laytown & Bettystown, which the team came through strongly. They then went on to play The Castle, Royal Tara and Donabate in Dun Laoghaire Golf Club over the course of a week-end, all of which they won, which resulted in them reaching the final. The Club now goes on to play in the All Ireland series in Ardee Golf Club on Friday 16th September. The semi finals have a 1.30pm start against either Douglas or Roscommon who play-off for a place in the Semi Final at 8.30am that morning. Should we be successful, we will then participate in The All Ireland Final on Saturday 17th at 10am. We would like to congratulate Ciara Smith and Marie Falvey (Managers) and their team on a wonderful effort and wish them all the best in the All Ireland Finals. 2 COURSE REPORT PHOTOS TAKING IN MGC BY MALAHIDE CAMERA CLUB The Course Despite very changeable weather the course has improved considerably this year. This improvement is as a result of higher input of fertiliser and constant attention to the risk of disease. Also, an additional member was added to the course staff on a temporary basis over the summer months. The removal of suckers at the base of the trees and the laying of matting on steps and stream crossings has improved the overall look of the course. Seven new wooden seats have been placed at various tee-boxes around the course. The one on the 5 th on the Red has a plaque attached in memory of the late Kieran Dolphin. Fairways A slow release fertiliser was applied in April and a further application of liquid feed has resulted in a thicker and better quality surface. The increased use of divot mix by members has helped significantly, because divots, even when replaced, tend to dry out when there is little rain. There is still evidence of people practicing on the course with multiple divots in certain areas. Members should be well aware that such practice is not permitted. Also, buggies should not be driven near the greens yet they have been seen between the water and the green to left of the 1 st on the Red. The Sanding of the Red & Yellow fairways will take place on the 20th September Greens Few could complain that our greens are slow!. Apart from some links courses we have the fastest putting surfaces in this part of Leinster. The course staff are highly vigilant to the onset of disease and a preventative programme is also in place. A new foliar solution is now being applied every 21 days which has shown to be very beneficial. It is intended to resod the collars on the 4th & 7th greens on the Red course & the 3rd & 9th on the Yellow course during the Autumn months. The Yellow nine greens were hollow cored and top dressed on the 8-10th of August 2011 and the Red nine was completed from 29th - 31st August The Blue nine will commence on the 19th - 21st September. The Yellow greens have recovered well and they are almost back to peak conditions. In the past this work was done in the Spring and, as a result, recovery was slow. This change to Autumn will result in quicker recovery and less interruption to members. All that will be required in the Spring will be hollow pencil tinning of the greens which is not invasive and won t affect the putting surface. An Autumn/Winter programme of further course improvements is being put in place with the assistance of the course staff, General Manager and course committee. It is hoped that these measures, when implemented, will further enhance the playing surface and overall appearance of our course Brian Howlett Course Convenor August 2011 MALAHIDE GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - PAGE 2

TIP FROM THE PRO JOHN MURRAY THE LOB SHOT 1 4 The Club of choice is a Lob Wedge (normally has a loft of at least 58 to 64 ) if you don t have this club GET ONE! On swinging, the left arm and club have formed the shape of an L. The grip end of the club is pointing towards the ground, and the wrists are fully engaged. 2 5 Set up for this shot is crucial. For this shot, the ball position is forward toward left heel, club face open eg. Imagine balancing a glass of wine on the club face. Like all good Golf shots, the follow through is important, here you can see the weight on the left foot, the chest is facing the target and the arms swing to a full follow through. 3 6 The Shoulders, Hips and Feet should be aimed To the left of the target. Once again a desired conclusion MALAHIDE GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - PAGE 4

TEAMS Interclub Competitions The Miele Fourball team (managed by Marie Tolan) beat Corrstown on July 3rd and went on to play Lucan on the 16th July but unfortunately was beaten. Lucan went on to win the Miele Fourball The Intermediate Cup team (managed by Anna McGrath) was beaten by Clontarf in Naas on Sunday, 17th July. Clontarf went on to win The AA Intermediate Leinster Cup Final The Fingal Senior Ladies unfortunately didn t make it through to the final stages of the competition. The Senior Foursomes, (managed by Ciara Smith and Maire Falvey), played in Dunlaoghaire over the 6/7th of August, beating The Castle GC, Royal Tara and Donabate. They went on to win the Leinster Finals against Dunlaoghaire and Craddockstown on August 28th. They will now go on to play in the All Ireland series in Ardee Golf Club on Friday 16th September. The semi finals have a 1.30pm start against either Douglas or Roscommon who play-off for a place in the Semi Final at 8.30am that morning. Should we be successful, we will then participate in The All Ireland Final on Saturday 17th at 10am. Jimmy Carroll Cup - Malahide were beaten by a single point against Beechpark GC on August 8th as they competed in the playoff for a place in the All Ireland Final of the Jimmy Carroll Cup. Irish Mixed Foursomes So Near and Yet So Far the Irish Mixed team had a great run this year culminating in a visit to Courtown for the Leinster Finals. 124 different Leinster clubs entered this All Ireland Competition and the Malahide team had extremely close wins against Balcarrick, Skerries, Beaverstown, Ardee and Hollywood Lakes. This meant that we would represent North Dublin in the Leinster Semi Finals against Newlands Golf Club, while The Castle and Baltinglass would fight out the other Semi Final. The Semi was played at 8am in Courtown and we were delighted to see so many supporters wearing the Malahide colours that early in the day and so far away. The match against Newlands was a great example of "Never count your chickens We had 5 pairs playing and we had great early wins from Ciara Smith partnered by Lar Craddock and Laura Mahony with Tommy Rusk. couldn t get that elusive third losing two on the 18th and one on 20th green. The eventual winners were City of Derry who beat Curra West in the final on 3/2 Score line. Donie O Sullivan The Best Cup After a gap of 18 years the Best Cup returned to its spiritual home, Malahide Golf Club on 3rd September 2011 following a victory over Hazel Grove in the final by the narrowest of margins. The Best Cup is run by Malahide members Paddy Conlon and Phil Ahearne who took over from the founder of the competition Bertie Best, hence the name, and the competition is now in its 51st season. The nucleus of the 2011 victorious team was chosen from the Friday Nighters and almost half of the panel of 16 had never played Inter Club golf previously. This in itself is a great tribute to Team Manager, Thomas Magner who obviously recognised the talent at his disposal and wasn t afraid to blood his young lions into action despite their inexperience. A bye in round one was followed by victories over Donabate, Ashbourne, Craddockstown and Beaverstown before reaching a 2 legged final. Thomas opted to play the away leg first and many people (outside the team) felt they had an impossible task when they returned 4 to 1 down after the journey to Jobstown. However, the team dug deep at home and, following the matches, the tie was squared at 5 matches a piece. This resulted in a sudden death match down the 19th hole and Malahide, represented by Gary King and Leo Finlay, went on to secure the title and a 2011 pennant. The Team would like to thank all of those who supported it, particularly the ball spotters and the caddies, notably Bryan "13 late" Wallace, Sean "Only do 13" McCrory, Paul "play like 13" Tomsett, Clive "wish I could be 13" Brooks and Mick "real 13" Gaffney. Thanks also to Lady Captain Pauline Duddy and Captain Pat Power for their presence at both venues during the final. Congratulations to Thomas and his panel on a superb victory. Ray Kehoe & Thomas Magner Jim Killeen and Anne Hayes knew they were in trouble when the draw was announced, as they would play an 18 handicapper from Newlands called Ned Kelly. Ned didn't have a steel helmet but, other than that, he lived up to reputation. Jim and Anne were 5 down at the turn, but not quite dead. By hole 16 they were all square and looked odds on to bring us home. At that stage Paul and Lorraine O Connor and Colin Shiels partnering Yvonne Power were both up in their matches also. All looked rosy in the garden but, unfortunately, the Gods didn t look down on us over the closing holes. In fairness to Newlands they fought and scrapped for every hole and they eventually won two matches on 20 and one on 19 to take the tie and proceed to the Leinster Final. We had a superb panel and ready to do battle in the afternoon were June O Connor, Dara McMahon, Linda Newman Matthews as well as Miki Barrett and Christian Hickey. In the afternoon Newlands went on to beat The Castle who had earlier completed an easy enough victory against Baltinglass. The All-Ireland semi finals took place on 1st of September in Athlone Golf Club and, astonishingly, a similar fate to Malahide was to behold Newlands in their match against Curra West. They appeared to be cantering into final having made a great start and leading in all 5 matches through the turn. In a virtual carbon copy of our match, they scored two early victories but THE BEST CUP WINNING TEAM RAY KEHOE, PAT CALLAN, TOM MAGNER, PRESIDENT KEVIN GOSS & CAPTAIN PAT POWER MALAHIDE GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - PAGE 5

GOLF RULES - AND ONE THAT THE MAJORITY OF GOLFERS DO NOT KNOW (20-4/1) Lifting and Marking Rule 20-1 states in part: If a ball or ball-marker is accidentally moved in the process of lifting the ball under a Rule or marking its position, the ball or the ball-marker must be replaced. There is no penalty, provided the movement of the ball or ballmarker is directly attributable to the specific act of marking the position of or lifting the ball. Otherwise, the player incurs a penalty of one stroke under this Rule or Rule 18-2a When a Ball Dropped or Placed is in Play If the player s ball in play has been lifted, it is again in play when dropped or placed. A substituted ball becomes the ball in play when it has been dropped or placed. (Ball incorrectly substituted see Rule 15-2) 20-4/1 Ball Replaced on Putting Green But Ball-Marker Not Removed; Ball Then Moves Q. A player replaces his ball on the putting green but does not remove his ball-marker. Subsequently the wind moves his ball to a new position. What is the ruling? A. Under Rule 20-4, a ball is in play when it is replaced, whether or not the object used to mark its position has been removed. Consequently the ball must be played from the new position see Decision 18-1/ a/7 Ball Moved by Wind Replaced Q. In stroke play, a competitor's ball was moved by wind. Since wind is not an outside agency (see Definition of Outside Agency ), he should have played it from where it came to rest, but he replaced it. What is the ruling? A. The competitor incurred one penalty stroke under Rule 18-2a, and, before playing his next stroke; he should have replaced the ball on the spot where it came to rest after being moved by the wind. If he did not do so, he incurred a total penalty of two strokes see penalty statement under Rule c/3.5 Dropped Ball Comes to Rest and Then Rolls Out of Bounds Q. A player's ball comes to rest against a boundary stake. He deems the ball unplayable and drops it within two club-lengths of where the ball originally lay, as prescribed by Rule 28c. After the ball has been at rest, it rolls and comes to rest out of bounds. What is the ruling? A. If a dropped ball comes to rest but subsequently moves, the ball must be played as it lies (see Note 1 to Rule 20-2). In this case the ball is out of bounds and the player must proceed under Rule Since the ball was at rest before moving, Rule 20-2c is not applicable. MALAHIDE GOLF CLUB NEWSLETTER - PAGE 6

20-3d/1 Placed Ball Rolls into Hole Q. A replaces his ball on the putting green three feet from the hole. As he is about to address the ball, it rolls into the hole. Should the ball be replaced or is A deemed to have holed out with his previous stroke? MALAHIDE GOLF CLUB Local Rule in Relation to Swan Soiling A. The answer depends on whether the ball, when replaced, came to rest on the spot on which it was placed before it started rolling. If it did, A is deemed to have holed out with his previous stroke. If not, A is required to replace the ball (Rule 20-3d). However, if the ball had been overhanging the hole when it was lifted, the provisions of Rule 16-2 would override those of Rule 20-3d. 18-1/12 Ball Replaced and at Rest Is Thereafter Moved by Wind Q. A player replaces his ball on the putting green and the ball is at rest. Before the player addresses the ball, a sudden gust of wind blows the ball farther from the hole. The player plays the ball from its new position. Is that correct? A. Yes. Wind is not an outside agency see Definition of Outside Agency. Accordingly, Rule 18-1 does not apply. Swan Soiling is deemed to be an Abnormal Ground Condition. Relief may be taken under Rule If the Ball lies in or touches the condition, or if the condition affects the player s stance or the area of the player s intended swing, Through the Green or on a Tee box The player must lift the ball and drop it, without penalty, not more than one club length from the nearest point of relief, not nearer the hole. The nearest point of relief must not be on the green or in a hazard. In a Bunker The player may lift the ball and drop it, without penalty, not more than one club length from the nearest point of relief, not nearer the hole. The nearest point of relief must be in the bunker. Or Under penalty of one stroke, the ball may be dropped outside the bunker, keeping the spot in which the ball lay in a direct line between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped. On the Putting Green If the ball is on the green, the player must lift the ball and place it, without penalty, at the nearest point of relief, not nearer the hole. The nearest point of relief may be off the green but not in a hazard. On the green, if the condition intervenes in the line of putt, the player must place the ball on the nearest point of relief. The nearest point of relief may be off the green but not in a hazard. There is no relief from this condition if the ball lies in a water hazard. 10 JUVENILE NEWS It has been a very good summer for the Juvenile boys of Malahide Golf Club, especially our under 15 team, who have reached the Leinster Final against Bray Golf Club. This is a fantastic achievement for Martin Dunne and his team of Andrew Conlon, Pierce Finnegan, Alex Mannion, Sam Nolan, Philip Rusk, Stephen Ryan and Andrew Murray-Perrick. We wish the boys the very best of luck in the second leg of this two-leg final that takes place in Bray on Sunday 18th of September. The lads have an uphill task ahead of them as they trail 4-1 from the opening leg but will take a lot of encouragement from the Best Cup team who turned around a similar first leg deficit. We have also had some notable individual performances including Andrew Conlon who finished Runner-Up in the Ulster Boys Under 15 Championship. One of our Cadets, AJ McCabe, also won the best net in the Leinster under 13 series, which was a superb achievement when you consider that AJ is only 11 years of age. The Fingal league team had a good performance this year finishing 4th out of 16 teams. Over the course of this competition we used a total of 20 different players of various handicap, which is testament to the strength of our Juvenile section. A big thanks goes to Paddy Smith and Donal Hughes who both gave up their time each Monday to look after the team. Juvenile competitions over the summer months were well supported but we would like to see more Juveniles playing in these competitions. Our Juvenile Captains (Eoin Sweeney and Rachel Gallagher) Prizes were held in July with Conor Murray winning the Boys competition and Niamh Purcell taking the Girls event. Two more Juvenile competitions will be held in 2011, the first will take place on 3rd of November with the final competition of the year on 27th of December. We also arranged a series of Adult/Juvenile competitions throughout the year and these have been very well supported. The final two such competitions are scheduled to take place on 11th of September and 26th of December and all are welcome. Darragh Smith Boys under 15 s Leinster Finalists On Friday 25th August 2011, Malahide Golf Club hosted one of the five Regional Qualifiers for Ireland s only Junior Pro Am Series. Twenty teams competed in this Official Tournament of the Irish PGA which was run in association with Citrus Golf. Each team comprised of three Juniors (Boys or Girls aged between years of age) and one Assistant PGA Pro. Eight girls from Malahide GC took part in the event. Each team s aim was to finish in the top three places in order to go forward to October s Grand Final in St. Helens Bay Golf Resort. Despite heavy torrential rain towards the end of the round, local knowledge and skill seemed to prove beneficial with two of Malahide Golf Clubs Junior Teams coming first and third. There was great camaraderie and anticipation following the event, as scores were entered, totalled and the final results calculated. The eventual winners with 97 points were Conor Sutton, Philip Rusk and Shane O Reilly from Malahide Golf Club, with their Assistant Pro Bernard Fitzgerald from Beechpark GC. In second place with 92 points were Caoimhe Russell, Kevin Mc- Cabe and Graham Lynch from County Louth GC, playing with their Assistant Pro Robert Hogan from Halpeny GC. In third place with 89 points were Pierce Finnegan, Alex Mannion and Daniel Colclough from Malahide Golf Club, playing with their Assistant Pro Gregory Leech from South County GC. In the Assistant Pro Competition Peter Hannon (Co Meath GC) and Mark O Sullivan (Ashbourne GC) shared the spoils in a tie for first place. Overall a great day and special thanks to Frederick Moran, Malahide s Vice Captain, John Murray, Malahide s Golf Professional and Tiernan Byrne from Citrus Golf for making the day possible. Finally, here s wishing the three winning teams every success in October s Final.
