Engagement is the engine that drives everything we do--as people and as Rotarians. I encourage you to engage with Rotary--with the same passion we all bring to engagement in our partnerships and marriages, family relationships, friendships, business connections, community members and our inner selves and personal growth. Rotary deserves it! Where can you engage Rotary? In your local club, of course, and also with Rotaract, Interact, Rotary District 7300, Rotary Youth Leadership Exchange, Rotary International Foundation, and so much more. What service do you or your club want to achieve? Undoubtedly, there are Rotary resources to help--all you need to do is to engage, make a plan, and get started. One of the best features of belonging to a Rotary club is being able to do good in our communities and the world. How do we fund our good works? Through foundation funds--and The Rotary Foundation is one of the biggest internationally. District 7300 also has The Rotary District Foundation, for grants as to more localized projects. Rotarians make good service partners, and the matching funds available in our District, and also internationally, give leveraged power to virtually any club service initiative. The District returned $ 6,151 back to The Rotary Foundation (the international foundation) to be used for Global Grants. District 7300 Rotary International Youth Programs (Youth Exchange, RYLA, Rotaract and Interact) $ 9,000 District 7300 Higher Education Scholarships for Graduating High School Seniors $ 8,000 District 7300 Administrative operating expenses (maximum 3%) $ 2,060 TOTAL $62,468 Please note that the above list does not address grants sought from Rotary Internation Foundation, which are "a whole other kettle of fish" and may include matching grants from both District 7300 and from The Rotary International Foundation. Learning the ropes of Foundations connected to Rotary is complicated--but PDG Rick Martin assures us that he and the rest of the committee are available to speak at our clubs to explain it. WORLDWIDE POLIO UPDATE by PDG Walt Sickles As of August 2018, there have been only 13 cases of the Wild Polio Virus reported in the world this year. That, of course, is 13 too many, so we must keep up the fight to eradicate this disease completely! VISITING SCHOLARS by Jeff Klink For the first time in at least a few years, Rotary District 7300 will have two inbound Global Grants (Ambassador) Scholars. First, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh, is Nevena Jevremovic, from Sarajevo, Rotary District Ms. Jevremovic will be studying at the University of Pittsburgh. Also, sponsored by the Oakland Club, is Manami Noji, from the Sanda Rotary Club, Rotary District 2680, who will also study at the University of Pittsburgh. Stay tuned for more details as these Amabassadorial Scholars arrive and become acclimated to Pittsburgh--and our clubs. 3

4 District Tech News: by Dennis Piper Great Resources: - Rotary International Web Site: Please visit the new and improved RI website. The new webmaster left Microsoft to join the Rotary cause. There are great resources from the Rotary Citation to easy-to- create brochures. You can event get 40% off Kennywood and Sandcastle tickets. - District 7300 Web Site: We have done some significate work on the District website. We just added photos from the 2017 Atlanta International Conference and District Conference. Check out the videos on the home page and in the news section. If you have some District event photos, we would love to post them. Please any event and activities to the District Secretary. PLEASE NOTE: All member, officer and club information must be entered on the CLUBRUNNER DISTRICT WEBSITE, NOT the RI website. By entering information on the District site, the RI site will be updated as well. **** - Club Runner App: Available for all Smart Phones If you would like a list of your members and all their information, download this free app. The new version is awesome. - Presidents and Presidents Elect: It is very important to fill in your goals and volunteer hours on the RI website. If you need help, please let me know. It is not that painful and will benefit Rotary more than you know. 5 Fox Chapel Area Club Celebrates-- Military Connections by Tom Benic In May of this year, the Fox Chapel Area Rotary Club welcomed Summer Tissue, founder of "Military Connections." Military Connections is a volunteer effort to support military service members deployed overseas. A Pittsburgh-based non-profit, this organization has been shipping care packages and supplies to military personnel stationed overseas since Summer started Military Connections when her brother Eddie joined the Marine Corps. Prior to his time of service, she thought that the military provided service members with all the necessary supplies--and she found out when Eddie was getting ready to deploy that this was not the case. Military personnel are required to purchase their own supplies. There are differences from branch to branch, but the only item military personnel are guaranteed are weapons and ammunition. Consequently, Summer started shipping such basic items as toothpaste, soap, and socks to her brother and his friends. Soon word spread, and Marines were writing asking for such everyday items that they could not find at their PX in Iraq. Realizing that there must be other men and women in the same situation, Summer decided to found her organization. Focusing on areas overseas without easy access to a PX and service members without family or friends, Military Connections ships primarily food, snacks, healthcare items, athletic socks, magazines, and entertainment items such as DVDs or magazines, but troops are encouraged to request particular items they need. Summer says the organization has never declined a request from a unit and will ship anything they possibly can. Some quick facts about this fascinating--and much needed--organization include: Military Connections is 100% volunteer-run. All donations are used for the Care Package Project. Military Connections is a Registered 501(c)(3) non-profit recognized by the IRS, so all donations are taxdeductible. Military Connections operates out of the lower level of its founder s home to keep operating costs at a minimum. Most needed items are food and snack donations. 90% of care packages are shipped to combat zones. Each care package shipped to an APO address costs roughly $30 in postage. Each care package shipped to an FPO address costs roughly $70 in postage. Summer's was an inspiring story of how dedicated people really can make a difference. 5
