2 OFFICE OF THE MAYOR CITY OF CHICAGO August 31, 2009 G R E E T I N G S As Mayor and on behalf of the city of Chicago, it is my pleasure to welcome all those gathered for the 55 th USGA Senior Amateur Championship. Founded in 1894, the USGA is a non-profit organization dedicated to governing golf through establishing rules and conducting 13 national championships each year. USGA is committed to providing programs and services that enhance the golfing experience and promote excellence, inclusiveness and integrity in sports. This year, 156 players from around the country will gather to compete in the national championship taking place in Chicago. While you are here, I hope that you will take time to discover all that makes Chicago a great place to live and visit. I know you will like what you find. From our great architecture and beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline to our exciting nightlife and many world-renowned cultural institutions, Chicago offers something for everyone. Best wishes for a memorable and enjoyable event Francis Ouimet Sincerely, Richard M. Daley Mayor of Chicago
3 HISTORY OF BEVERLY COUNTRY CLUB Established in 1908, The Beverly Country Club is a mainstay in the Chicagoland golf community. From its inception, Beverly was recognized as a championship course, a distinction that still resonates more than a century later. George O Neil, the club s first professional, is credited with laying out Beverly s original golf course with the assistance of well-known golf course architect Tom Bendelow. Beverly s mark on American golf was first recognized when club officials decided to ask legendary architect Donald Ross to create a master plan to renovate the course and prepare it for the 1931 U.S. Amateur Championship. Over the course of nearly a decade, the entire Ross plan was adopted, again putting Beverly among the very finest golf courses in the country. In a fitting touch of déjà vu, in 2002, a dedicated group of Beverly members led the club through a restoration of the golf course by architect Ron Prichard that reclaimed many of the Donald Ross features that had been lost over the decades. The result is a stunning test of golf that will challenge the game s best players USGA SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP- WRAP UP What is it about 13 being a lucky number for a couple of recent USGA champions? In 2007, Trip Kuehne finally got his first USGA championship, the U.S. Mid-Amateur, 13 years after a heartbreaking defeat to Tiger Woods in the final of the U.S. Amateur. And 13 years after also falling to Woods in a U.S. Amateur final, George Buddy Marucci Jr., 56, of Villanova, Pa., won his first USGA title, beating 55-year-old George Zahringer of New York, N.Y., 2 up, for the USGA Senior Amateur Championship at Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. Fittingly, Kuehne, a Dallas-area resident, came out to watch his 2007 USA Walker Cup captain register his biggest career victory. Of all my accomplishments in golf, this has to top the list, said Marucci, who will again captain the USA Walker Cup side in 2009 at his home club (Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.). I can t wait to walk into the USGA Museum [in Far Hills, N.J.] and see my name in the Hall of Champions. It means a lot to me after all my years of trying. Marucci, who has played in almost 50 USGA events, never trailed in the final against Zahringer, the 2002 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion and a 2003 Walker Cup team member. His lead was as large as three holes before Zahringer cut the deficit back to one at No. 15. Marucci maintained that advantage by converting a clutch 8-foot par putt at 16. At the 18th hole, Zahringer conceded Marucci s 11-foot birdie after his attempt from 25 feet slid by the hole. I think Buddy s iron play was better than mine today, said Zahringer. Marucci advanced to the final with a 2-up win over Frank Ford III of Charleston, S.C., while Zahringer defeated John Pallin of Kenosha, Wis., in the other semifinal, 4 and 3. Medalist Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C., advanced to the second round before being eliminated by Randy Nichols of Connersville, Ind., 2 and 1. Local favorite John Grace of Fort Worth fell to Marucci in the quarterfinals, 3 and 2. The genius of Ross work lies in the remarkably elegant routing of the golf course, in which no two consecutive holes run in the same direction, despite the fact that the course is laid out within a perfect rectangle that is hemmed in and bisected by three arterial streets and a railroad line. Ross made excellent use of the dominant geological feature of the property: a prominent ridge that runs from behind the fifth green eastward through the promontory above the second fairway. Five holes on the front nine are designed around the ridge, which had been part of the southern shore of prehistoric Lake Chicago, a forgotten body of water that deposited sand dunes along Beverly s back nine. Students of Ross design school will recognize his mark throughout the course, particularly in the tee designs and green complexes. The recently remodeled bunkering of the golf course also bears the stamp of the Scottish master. Over the years, Beverly has been the host to four Western Open Championships (1910, 1963, 1967 and 1970) and one U.S. Amateur championship (1931). If one can correlate the strength of a course s champions to the strength of the course, Beverly is indeed a true test of golf, since its champions include legends like Chick Evans, Francis Ouimet, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. Beverly also holds the distinction of hosting three Women s Western Open championships (1937, 1960 and 1965). The women s course record is 69 by Susie Maxwell; previous holders of the record include Patty Berg and Babe Didrickson. Storied amateur champion Virginia Van Wie was a longtime member of the club. Beverly also hosted the 1943 Chicago Victory National Open Championship, a wartime substitute for the U.S. Open. Championship golf returned to Beverly Country Club in 1999 when the rejuvenated Chicago Open came to the South Side for a three-year run, with PGA Tour star Luke Donald winning in The competitive course record is 64, set by Tom Weiskopf in 1967, breaking Tommy Armour s 65, which had stood since Hosting the 2009 USGA Senior Amateur Championship will put Beverly Country Club in the elite company of clubs that have hosted multiple national amateur championships along with Nationwide and PGA Tour events.
4 THE LOCAL CONNECTION Two Beverly members are veteran competitors in the USGA Senior Amateur Championship. Rick Ten Broeck, whose family joined Beverly more than 50 years ago, has been playing the golf course since he was seven years old. Rick has competed in several USGA Senior Amateur Championships, including last year s championship at Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. Rick has won the club championship at Beverly a staggering 18 times. He lost the championship to his son Scott in the final in 2008, which is notable in itself, but it was also eerily reminiscent of the year that his brother James beat their father, Willis Ten Broeck, for the club championship in Rick s brother Lance played on the PGA Tour and currently works as a caddie for Jesper Parnevik. USGA Executive Committee Rick has probably played Beverly more than any other living member and his view of the course s bona fides is straightforward. You never tire of playing Beverly. It is a demanding, but fun, golf course that tests all aspects of the game, Rick said. Rick predicts that the competitors in this year s USGA Senior Amateur will love the golf course, because it has all of the hallmarks of a championship golf course, including a great variety of holes and very demanding green complexes. He went on to say that most of these golfers grew up playing traditional golf courses, and Beverly is one of the best around. Bill Shean Jr. is an honorary member of Beverly, and he has had a longtime connection to the club, having been born on the South Side. Bill has been an accomplished amateur champion for many years and was inducted into the Illinois PGA Hall of Fame in His golfing career began as a hobby, but he went on to win 14 club championships, including one at prestigious Pine Valley Golf Club. In one of the great streaks in modern senior amateur golf, Shean won three national senior amateur championships in three consecutive years, winning the 1998 USGA Senior Amateur, the 1999 British Senior Amateur and the 2000 USGA Senior Amateur. Bill will be competing in this year s event and will attempt to tie the record for most wins in the championship. Dick Carparelli is a veteran golf professional at Beverly Country Club. Now a very young 91, Dick is still at Beverly at least five days a week, giving lessons and playing several holes a day. He has seen it all at Beverly, including three Western Opens, but this will be the first national championship that he has the opportunity to observe at the club. This is a simple looking golf course with a lot of sneaky demands on the golfer, he said. Beverly requires the golfer to move the ball both ways and definitely requires a steady putter, especially if you get above the hole, Carparelli added. Dick will be hanging around the practice range during championship week, but don t expect him to be offering any pointers, because these guys who qualify are among the best players in the country, they don t need my help, Carparelli said. 5 2009 Conditions of Play FRANCIS OUIMET WINS 1931 U.S AMATEUR AT BEVERLY C.C Eighteen years after he stunned the golf world by winning the 1913 U.S. Open in a playoff over Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, and 17 years removed from his first U.S. Amateur triumph, 38-year-old Francis Ouimet of Boston, Mass., defeated 26-year-old Jack Westland, 6 and 5, in the 36-hole final at Beverly Country Club in Chicago, Ill. The victory came 17 years to the very day that Ouimet upended Jerry Travers to win the 1914 U.S. Amateur at Ekwanok Country Club in Manchester, Vt. The final result was also the same. Never before in the history of the Amateur had a player claimed a second U.S. Amateur title so many years after winning his first. Ouimet had come close to winning a second U.S. Amateur crown in 1920, but Charles Chick Evans stopped him, 7 and 6, in the final at Engineers Country Club in Roslyn Harbor, N.Y. Only one other figure in golf had managed to win two national championships over a greater time span and that was Englishman John Ball, who first took the British Amateur title in 1888 and claimed his last in But Ball also won a few in between. Ouimet started quickly against Westland, the Chicago District champion, taking a 4-up lead after nine holes of the morning round. Westland, who would win the Amateur 21 years later, did manage cut the deficit to two holes after 13, but Ouimet would restore his 4-up lead by dropping an 18-foot birdie at 14 and holing an 8-footer at 15. He made a 30-footer at 16 to maintain the 4-up advantage. Ouimet shot the equivalent of 76, with the usual match-play concessions, on the first 18, compared to Westland s 81. Ouimet eventually closed out Westland at the 31st hole. In the 36-hole semifinal round, Ouimet defeated Billy Howell, 2 and 1, and Westland eliminated Maurice McCarthy, 3 and 2. For the first time ever, the USGA instituted sectional qualifying, with 20 sites across the country. The field of 583 entries was reduced to 150, from which 32 qualified for match play. Arthur Yates was medalist (148), but he lost to Westland in the quarters, 1 up. Entries Open to amateur golfers who have reached their 55th birthday by Sept. 12, 2009, and who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 7.4. 6 Welcome from the USGA Welcome to the 55th USGA Senior Amateur Championship, and congratulations to all who have qualified to play. This year s championship is being conducted at the historic Beverly Country Club. The course, first established in 1908, later re-designed by premier golf course architect Donald Ross and ranks with his other designs at The Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs, Colo., Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Fla. and Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Ron Prichard, a Donald Ross renovation expert, recently completed a major renovation of the course. Beverly Country Club is hosting its second USGA national championship. In 1931, the course was the site of the U.S. Amateur, won by Francis Ouimet. The USGA Senior Amateur is the 57th USGA national championship conducted in the state of Illinois. Illinois has previously hosted 13 U.S. Open championships, three U.S. Women s Opens and two U.S. Senior Opens. We are grateful to the club s members, staff and volunteers for their hard work to make this championship a success. To the players and spectators, when you leave Beverly, we hope you leave with lasting impressions of great golf played on a championship course, and also with memories of the unique spirit of sportsmanship, etiquette and fellowship that makes golf the greatest game of all. Sincerely, James F. Vernon President United States Golf Association Rick Ten Broeck, Beverly Country Club member Pat Kaufman Chairman USGA Senior Amateur Championship Committee
