10 Chris Banister Assistant Golf Coach ( ) By: James Hobbs Chris Banister was a very valuable part of Jacksonville State University golf for almost five years. He joined our program in the fall of 1995 as JSU was playing its first season as a Division I golf team. This was a very exciting time for our University as we moved into a new era and as we initiated our women s golf program. Chris at that time filled many roles as my assistant coach, ranging from day-to-day practice, to team travel, to the many insignificant duties that he took great pleasure in performing. Chris Banister was described in the Anniston Star as a giant in the local community due to his golfing successes. Those who knew Chris remembered him as without peer in his day as a competitor, but as one who never forgot the delicacies of the game and always found time to help other players improve their games. Chris was described by many who knew him well, as a person who was very unselfish, who loves to teach golf. He had keen instincts for the mechanics of one s golf swing and the unique ability to teach one to swing better. Teaching the finer points of the game was what Chris did best. Chris left his mark on many golfers, both young and old. When Chris turned to helping our program, little did I know what kind of impact he would have. I could never have imagined how valuable he would be to our program and to our success. Not only did he perform the small tasks with enthusiasm, but he was always willing to help any player at any time with their golf skills. Our players all loved Chris for many different reasons and this was recorded by a plaque they presented to him just prior to his death that described him as a friend, teacher, encourager, mentor. To many, he was very much a father away from home. For me I have lost a true friend, one who had real concern for me and what I do in my profession as golf coach. I have lost a colleague, who tried always to help me do my duties better. For our players, they have lost a person who is irreplaceable for his love, concern and help that he provided to each. To honor Chris and his many contributions, we have named this tournament in his honor. Also, JSU has established an endowed scholarship fund to help young golfers in our community in the future. The impact of Chris Banister will be felt for many years to come.
