2 PREVIEW Spartans Head A New Direction With First Year Head Coach Sam Puryear First year head coach Sam Puryear is bringing a new attitude to the face of Michigan State men s golf. I just want to win, he said, when talking about his upcoming season. I would like to alter the mindset, for us to think globally and think about our brand, and know that we deserve to be at the top of the national level. Puryear s new direction includes a myriad of new things that he would like to incorporate into the Michigan State golf program. My hope is to bring a championship mentality to this program, said Puryear. We ll do that through a lot of hard work and a structured regimen; the complete component for a young man who is looking to play on the professional level someday. I want them to come to Michigan State to become a better student, a better golfer, a better citizen, and a better person. Last season, the Spartans graduated All- American and Big Ten Player of the Year Matt Harmon. Despite its loss, Michigan State retains the leadership of senior Ryan Brehm who currently holds the lowest career scoring average in school history. Brehm had an impressive start to the campaign, fi nishing the fall season with three fi rst-place fi nishes in the fi rst fi ve events. He took fi rst place while shooting a three-day total of 205 at the Fighting Irish Classic in early October, while placing second on the MSU all-time lowest 54-hole scoring list. In the second round of the Fighting Irish he shot a 64, tying MSU s all-time lowest 18-hole score. Both records were previously set by Brehm. Ryan is great player, Puryear explained. His morals, character, work ethic, and insatiable desire to win are what make him special. He is the kind of guy you love to have around because he s so coachable and he sets a great example for the inexperienced guys. As good as he is, I m actually expecting more from him this spring. He ll get even smarter and more savvy on the course, and his physical training and preperation will continue to improve. I think he really has the make-up of a very special player. In addition to Brehm, MSU holds onto the leadership of seniors Brandon Cigna and Nathan Gunthorpe. Cigna played in the Fighting Irish Invitational this fall, helping the Spartans to fi rst place as they fi nished the tournament with an 847, tying them for the second lowest team-score in MSU history. Gunthorpe played in the last tournament of the fall at the Big Ten/Pac 10 Challenge in Tacoma, Wash., where MSU fi nished in second place. Although they ve competed in only two events each since season, coach Puryear makes it clear that what they bring to the team is more than just competition on the course. Brandon and Nathan are both winners, and when you are a winner you bring that intangible to the table, said Puryear. They haven t had the success they would have liked to over the past year, but having that intangible as a winner makes them a great asset to our team. MSU s level of experience is certainly not a detriment to the team as it brings back two junior letterwinners and four total. Junior Randy Hutchison got off to a strong start this past fall. After competing in fi ve events last season, Hutchison has played RYAN BREHM in four of fi ve tournaments this fall and fi n- ished in the top-20 in three of four. His best fi nish came at the Gopher Invitational in mid-september where he shot a three-day total 221 ( ) to fi nish in 11th place. The sky is the limit for Randy, he s a real good player, said Puryear. I think he can pretty much be anything he wants to be as it relates to golf. Two-time letterwinner Steve Cuzzort has returned after competing in 10 events last season. He has played in three tournaments this fall and owns the third-best stroke average on the team (74.44). He had a career-best fi nish at this year s Inverness Intercollegiate, tying for third after shooting a three-round 211 ( ). Steve is a great kid, and great to have around, said Puryear. He loves golf for all the right reasons, and he plays it like it s meant to be played. He s a very important part of our team. Redshirt junior Grant Tungate competed in 12 events last season - third most on the team. He shot a season-best 217 ( ) at the Fossum Invitational and fi nished the season with a stroke average. Grant has a lot of ability, Puyear said. He is also a guy with amazing intangibles. He has vast knowledge of the game, he stays in shape, and he has fi erce competitive desires. Junior Jordan Ensrud is in his second season as a Michigan State Spartan. After transferring from Northern Colorado last season, he helped the Spartans to a fi rstplace fi nish at the Fighting Irish Invitational this fall and a second-place fi nish at the Big Ten/Pac 10 Challenge. Jordan is a great golfer and a great person, explained Puryear. He is a very hard worker, and before it s all said and done, I think he ll make a big impact for Michigan State golf. 2 Sophomore Jack Newman returns to the team after making an immediate impact as a freshman last season. Newman competed in 11 tournaments in and joins Ryan Brehm as the only player to compete in all fi ve events this fall. In his career at MSU, he s already posted six top-20 fi nishes, two in the top-10, and two top-fi ve s. His best fi nish came last year at the Fossum Invitational where he fi nished in a three-way tie for fi rst, after shooting a 206 ( ), tying him with former teammate Matt Harmon and Xavier s Jason Kokrak for the second-best score at the Fossum Invitational in

3 PREVIEW Baillargeon has made a quick impact for the Spartans in just his fi rst season, as he has competed in four of fi ve fall tournaments, fi nishing in the top-25 in two. His best fi nish came at the Fighting Irish Invitational as he fi nished tied for 16th with a 54-hole total of 217 ( ). Freshman Payne Gniewek was a four-year letterwinner at Gabriel Richard Catholic School in Trenton, Mich. As a senior, he was named to the all-state, all-catholic, and all-area teams. He was also named Catholic League Athlete of the Year and given the Mr. Golf Award. Gniewek was a Catholic League Championship medalist his sophomore and senior year, and Division III State Finals Medalist his senior year. JACK NEWMAN school history (205 - Luke Donald, Northwestern, 2001). The performance helped Michigan State to its eighth fi rst-place fi n- ish at the Fossum in school history and the fi rst since Newman was also the top Spartan fi nisher in the NCAA Championships last season fi nishing in 23rd place. Jack has unbelievable talent and ability, said Puryear. Simply put, Jack could potentially be one of the best to ever play at Michigan State. Graham Baillargeon heads this year s class of freshman. Baillargeon was a four-time letterwinner at St. Aloysius Gonzaga High School in Mississauga, Ontario. He competed in the Provincial Championship his sophomore through senior years; fi nishing 10th, second, and fi rst, respectively. He was voted Golf MVP his freshman and junior years, while placing fi rst in the Regional Championships in He was a 2006 U.S. Amateur qualfi er and has had nine fi rst-place fi nishes in his high school career. Baillargeon won the 2007 Canadian Junior Amateur and was recently named to Canada s 22-under developmental golf team by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA). Graham has that it factor, Puryear said. You can only give that to a few select athletes and I think Graham has it. That alone is going to allow him to be truly successful. He is a very special kid and he s very gifted. As he continues to mature through this game, we are going to see some amazing results. Philip Snow was a four-year letterwinner at Northville High School in Northville, Mich. He was named team MVP all four years of high school and earned all-conference honors his junior and senior year. Snow placed sixth in the state tournament his junior year and fourth place his senior year. He won the 2007 Michigan Junior Amateur shooting 8-under-par with rounds of 69, 69, and 70. Payne and Phil have been great contributors to our program so far, I give them a lot of credit, said Puryear. They are forcing everybody to step their games up, and they really have great games of their own. It s just a matter of time. They have strong work ethics, and they re maginifi cent people. The Spartans had a good start to the season as they fi nished second in the fi rst event of the year at the Inverness Intercollegiate. The team stumbled after fi n- ishing in seventh at both the Gopher Invitational and the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate. However, they bounced back in the last two tournaments of the fall, taking fi rst place, while posting an 847 ( ) at the Fighting Irish Invitational, the second-best fi nish in MSU history ( Fossum/ Spartan Invitational), then placing second at the Big Ten/Pac 10 Challenge to end the fall season. The Spartans tee off their spring season at the end of February in the Spartan Challenge at Port St. Lucie, Fla. (February 24). The team then travels to Houston, Texas, for the Green and White Challenge (March 8). Michigan State begins its three-round tournament schedule on March at the E-Z GO Schenkel in Stateboro, Ga. They then travel to Santa Cruz, Calif., to compete in the Western Intercollegiate on March GRAHAM BAILLARGEON Michigan State returns from its warm weather road trip for the Missouri Intercollegiate held in Columbia, Mo., on April 7-8. The remainder of MSU s schedule is all hosted by Big Ten schools. It starts with the Kepler Intercollegiate (April 12-13) hosted by Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, where the Spartans fi nished in second place last season. The next tournament is in West Lafayette, Ind., where they will participate in the Boilermaker Invitational (April 19-20). MSU fi nished fi rst at last year s Invite, as Ryan Brehm fi nished fi rst overall. The Spartans return home for the Big Ten Championships, hosting the event for the sixth time since MSU won the Big Ten Championship in 2007, the third time in school history. The guys are really pumped for the Big Ten Tournament this year, said Coach Puryear. They are excited to be able to defend their crown on their own course. MSU hopes to return to Columbus, Ohio, on May for the NCAA Regional Championship. Ryan Brehm fi nished in 17th in regionals last season, as the Spartans fi nished eighth out of 27 teams. The Spartans wrap up the season May in the four-round NCAA Championships in West Lafayette, Ind., where they fi nished in 23rd place last spring. I like our chances versus anybody right now, said Puryear. I think we have one of the top-10 schedules in the country. We ve played a lot of the top teams in the nation and held our own so far, and I think it s only going to get better as the season goes on. I m very confi dent in where we are right now and where we are going. 3

4 Sam PURYEAR HEAD COACH FIRST YEAR TENNESSEE STATE (1992) Sam Puryear was named head coach of the Michigan State men s golf program on Aug. 22, Puryear comes to East Lansing after two seasons as an assistant coach at Stanford, where the Cardinal captured the 2007 NCAA Division I National Championship. He becomes the ninth coach in Michigan State history. Sam Puryear is a man who has been involved in the game of golf at all levels, from youth academies, to player development, to National Championship college programs, to developing relationships with the top players in the world, said former MSU Athletics Director Ron Mason. He is a great fi t for Michigan State, as he is well suited to keep the Spartans among the elite programs in the Big Ten and competitive on the national golf scene. I would like to extend a huge thanks to the Michigan State athletic family for giving me this incredible opportunity, said Puryear. I will be embarking upon a dream come true. I would also like to thank Stanford for providing me an opportunity to lay the groundwork for this dream. and driven to win, which lends itself towards team success. Winning a national championship at Stanford was a total team effort, where everyone made their own unique contribution. What Sam brought was a constant positive attitude and the belief that anything is possible when you put your mind to it. In just two years at Stanford, Puryear recruited several top-ranked freshman, including Joseph Bramlett (2007 U.S. China Cup Team and 2007 Second Team All-American) and Steve Ziegler (2007 Junior World Team). He also placed a heavy emphasis on player development as Rob Grube earned Second Team All-America honors in 2007, after being an honorable mention selection the prior two seasons. In total, fi ve Stanford student-athletes earned All-America accolades in Before joining Stanford, Puryear was executive director of East Lake Junior Golf Academy in Atlanta, where he managed the development of golf instruction and curriculum for an academy, serving more than 1,000 youth. While at the academy, he cultivated relationships with the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, and The Tour Championship, creating unique one-on-one play for Pro-Am events with academy youth and select Top 30 money winners, including Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, My goal for the Spartan program is to win on the national stage. We will strive to be the toughest, hardest working, most fi t, and best-prepared team in the country. I am confident in the administration, and I am very excited to work with one of the most talented groups of young men on a collegiate campus. Puryear joined the Stanford program in February 2006 as the fi rstever full-time assistant dedicated solely to the men s golf team at the school. He took part in a process that saw the Cardinal jump from a No. 42 team ranking all the way to No. 1, according to Golfweek, Nike Coaches Poll and Golf Stat. In 2006, Stanford fi nished sixth at the Pac-10 Championships and tied for 14th at the NCAA West Regionals. One year later, Puryear helped the Stanford program reach a different level. The Cardinal won a school-record seven tournaments and earned a No. 1 seed in the 2007 NCAA West Regional. At the NCAA Championships, Stanford captured the national title with a 12-stroke victory in Williamsburg, Va. 4 We are sorry to see Sam leave, but excited for him to get this opportunity, said Stanford head coach Conrad Ray. It has been great to have him as a part of the Stanford program over the last two seasons. His background is second to none. From all his work with the golf academies to his interaction with some of the world s top players, he has great experience. His biggest asset is his personality. He is competitive
