3 WELCOME TO CAMBRIDGE PROFESSOR ADRIAN K DIXON PRESIDENT OF CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY GOLF CLUB It is my very great privilege to be the President of this wonderful golf club. To watch the members blend their considerable academic and golfing talents while they are at University is a joy to behold. I strongly believe that this combination of sport and work produces outstanding and upright members of society. We are blessed to have the wonderful facilities and exceptional support of the Royal Worlington and Newmarket golf club available to us. Worlington is one of the finest 9 hole courses in the world and plays exceptionally well in the winter months. It is a course where, over the years, many distinguished Cambridge golfers have honed their skills. During the two terms leading up to the Varsity matches, the teams put out by CUGC are royally entertained by numerous top clubs around the country, to whom we are very grateful for their generous hospitality. This includes the Gog Magog and St. Ives Golf Clubs who also kindly help us with practice facilities. The annual fixtures against Oxford are always played in the very best of spirit and are the culmination of many months of preparation. The CUGC is very lucky to have the support of the Oxford and Cambridge Golfing Society, which helps the students in innumerable ways. In turn, I am fortunate to have the financial help and friendship of Tim Harvey-Samuel, Bursar of Corpus Christi, as our Senior Treasurer. We all look forward seeing even more students involved in the club and to CUGC victories in

4 THE UNIVERSITY GOLF MATCH The University Golf Match Match is the oldest team event in golf, and also the oldest amateur competition in the sport - the Amateur Championship did not being until And although the Cricket Match (1827) and Boat Race (1829) predate it by some fifty years, the Golf Match is only six years the junior of the Varsity Rugby Match (1872). THE SOCIETY Although founded twenty years after the first Match, The Oxford and Cambridge Golfing Society is believed to be the oldest golfing society in the world. Membership is gained by playing in the Varsity Match, and opens up the possibility (since 1920) of playing in the prestigious annual President's Putter at Rye, and in matches against other clubs. THE DINNER MATCH On the day before the main two-day Match begins, the two reserves for each team traditionally play one 18 hole foursomes and two 18 hole singles games, with the losing side footing the bill for the sizeable dinner at the conclusion of the Match. HEAD TO HEAD RECORD In the 128-year history of the match there have been 7 halved matches. Cambridge have won 64 and Oxford have won

5 ROYAL WORLINGTON Royal Worlington is home to the Cambridge University Golf Club, a tradition that dates back to when the Club was formed in Royal Worlington has been regularly listed amongst the top 100 courses in Britain and Ireland, by Golf Monthly, and has the reputation of being the greatest 9-hole course in England, if not the world; Bernard Darwin described it as 'The Sacred Nine', which is the title of its history written by John Gillum in 1993 for the Club's centenary. It has been compared with St Andrews, having been laid out for the gutty ball and yet, with scarcely any modifications, it remains a great test with the modern clubs and ball. Like St Andrews, it may not quite measure up at first sight to all the tributes paid but the more familiar it becomes the more the special quality of the golf becomes evident. 17 THE ROAD TO GANTON 2017 Selection for the 128 th University Golf Match at Ganton Golf Club will be determined by the following criteria. The Committee and President of Cambridge University Golf Club agreed upon these criteria on 12 August Six Automatic Blues Six members of the Blues team will be selected automatically from the top six players in the Road To Ganton. The Road To Ganton will consist of a points based system with points being awarded as follows: - 1 point for every foursomes win in Blues matches - 2 points for every singles win in Blues matches - Points will be awarded for the four official club medals in the following order (1 st ) 8 (2 nd ) 6 (3 rd ) 4 (4 th ) 3 (5 th ) 2 (6 th ) 1 - The committee - with approval from the President - have the ability to deduct points for misconduct The order of merit will run from Saturday 1 October 2016 to Sunday 29 February In the event of a tie in the order of merit the player with the higher attendance record at matches and coaching will be selected. Four Captain s Picks The captain of CUGC shall have four discretionary picks for the varsity match. Players selection will be determined after consultation with the committee and the Blues head coach Paul Ashwell. Taking into consideration the following; - Their attendance at fixtures, practice, and coaching 17

18 - Their record in Blues matches and medals - Their current and past commitment to CUGC The Dinner Match The dinner match will be selected by taking into account the following; - Their attendance at fixtures, practice, and coaching - Their record in Blues matches and medals - Their current and past commitment to CUGC Team Announcement The full team for the 128 th match will be announced at the Hawks Club at 19:00 on Thursday 2 March Refusal To Play Those who hold themselves out to be available for selection for the Blues will also be considered available for selection for the dinner match and the Stymies match. Those who refuse to play for their selected team or in the dinner match after selection for reasons other than injury will be suspended from the club. 19 PROTOCOL FOR CUGC GOLFERS AT ROYAL WORLINGTON The following is based on the protocol followed by non-cugc members of the club. Worlington is a two ball club and the favoured format is foursomes. The course is constructed on a very small area and when playing foursomes it is possible for the person not playing the tee shot to walk ahead at every hole except the 1 st thereby increasing the speed of play so 18 holes should not take more than 2½ hours. A two ball singles round should not take more than 3 hours. Three and fourball matches are permitted after 12 noon, but only when the course is quiet, and have no standing on the course so must give way immediately to two ball matches. As a member of the CUGC, you are allowed to play at any time but not on Tuesday morning (men s roll-up) and Wednesday morning (ladies morning) and there are no exceptions to this rule. During the Michaelmas and Lent terms the course is usually quiet but may be in use for club matches, club competitions, visiting societies or other events so it is essential that you take note of the club fixture list to avoid a wasted journey should the course be busy. The fixture list is updated on a daily basis as necessary and the captains of both the men and ladies of the CUGC have electronic access to it so please consult with them before arranging to play. The captain of the CUGC will act as the focal point for coordinating golfing activity and consult with the secretary at Worlington to agree the optimal time for play should there be other fixtures at the club or if more than three 2 ball matches are planned and always if 3 or 4 ball matches are planned. 19

20 It is very unlikely that you will not be allowed to play at the permitted times even if there are other fixtures at the club but as there are no starting times it is important that you adhere to the agreed time to play. The secretary will do his very best to accommodate your playing requirements. Please come into the clubhouse and make yourself known to the bar staff before playing so that they have an idea of who is on the course. If you are starting a two ball match at the 1 st and there is a match in progress on the 9 th you must allow this match priority on the 1 st tee if players have hit their second shots. If you are playing a 3 or 4 ball match, players already on the 9 th hole have priority. PRACTICING AT WORLINGTON There are extensive practice facilities at Worlington, a large practice range, a chipping green and a putting green, if the professional is giving a lesson he has priority on these areas. On the practice range it is necessary to provide your own golf balls as Worlington does not have a golf ball retrieval service so it is sensible not to have more than 3-4 people practicing at the same time. If the professional is teaching, please agree with him where you will hit your practice balls. ETIQUETTE AT WORLINGTON Worlington, although a traditional club, has a relaxed atmosphere. You are welcome to wear golfing attire in the bar and a tie and jacket is required only when lunching in the dining room. In the summer shorts may be worn but only with long socks. Mobile telephones or electronic devices are not to be used in the clubhouse. 20

21 Please remember to repair pitch marks and replace divots as, being a 9 hole course, fairways and greens have twice as much use as an 18 hole course. FOOD AT WORLINGTON The sandwiches and soup at Worlington are, by common consent, outstanding and can be ordered by telephone to be ready on your arrival at the club. Please do not bring your own food and drink to be consumed in or around the clubhouse. We hope you will have a happy time at Worlington as have many generations of Cambridge golfers before you. With the consent of the Council you will be eligible to apply for membership at the end of your time at Cambridge at a very reduced subscription rate and without paying an entrance fee.
