TEE TIMES II JSGC DHEKELIA NEWSLETTER EDITION 6 SEASON 15/16 [October 2015] CAPTAIN NED MILLER CLUB CAPTAIN Firstly, I would like to offer a warm welcome to our new members to the Golf Club, wishing you the best of golf for the coming season. As a Club I think it's fantastic that we've managed to get everyone off the waiting list so, well done all, a great effort. We have a new Lady Captain, Norma McAndrew, I wish her and the Ladies Section every success in the new season and thank them for their continued support. Norma s appointment came after the short stint as Lady Captain of FS Mandy Brooks who has been transferred on promotion to RAF Akrotiri. From myself and all at the Club, we wish Mandy and Dave all the best for the future, hoping to see more of them given Mandy has retained her membership. One of the many challenges the season has brought to the Club is the imposed security restrictions made by Station. However, we all must remember that we are a Joint Service Golf Club on a military base and, although we may not fully understand the reasoning behind these decisions, we must support them to ensure the safety and security of everyone that lives in and visits Dhekelia Station. 2 A number of members have raised concerns about the condition of the course and how old and tired it looks. I must agree and point out that the harsh summer along with the imposed water restrictions caused John Harper and his ground staff exceptional ordeals and difficulties. That said, I am certain that with the first drop of rain and reduced temperature, along with the skill and devotion of the ground staff, the course will be back to its old self very soon and we will be complaining about the rough! In addition to this, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our volunteers Jimmy, George and many others as, without your dedication, the job would be so much harder. Sponsorship is a vital part of the Club and a number of events over the season are sponsored by members of the Club. We've had two such sponsored competitions so far this season, so a special thank you to Chris Harper for the Chairman v Captain s Day and Margot Watt and David Potter for the Past Members Memorial which was held on the 8th anniversary of the passing of Jim Watt, a very special day enjoyed by all. To conclude, I remind the membership that I am very approachable and a problem shared is a problem halved. I have the best interest for this Club at heart and say to you all, if you have any issues with any decisions or improvements made for the Club, please speak with me and not through a third party. Now let's play golf and good luck to you all. However, I've got to say that John Goldsmith is a Bandit. Best Regards, Ned Miller Club Captain FROM OUR CHAIRMAN Capt. Richard Wright Having now been the Club Chairman for some 4 months, and had the time to understand what it means to the Club and its members to be part of a Military (Station) Encroachment, with all the additional Red Tape, to that of a conventional Golf Club. I can honestly say that I am more than content that the Club is being run in an effective manner, in accordance with The Club Constitution, Service Regulations and the Station Encroachment Directive. 3 The Club continues to move forward in the right direction. As most will know, the Club Artificial Grass bid has been approved, with the Statement of Requirement currently out to tender the Club awaits quotations from likely companies bidding for the contract. Much preparatory work (water and grounds) will take place over the coming weeks and months in order to set the correct conditions for the Artificial Grass to be laid. I ask all members to be patient during these changes, for the better. Entitled membership is on the increase, with the last count being at 96. As a result, 14 prospective Club members have been selected out of 16 from the Club waiting list. All of which would not have been achieved if it was not for those Club members who have encouraged, hosted and played golf with those from the Entitled community who were sitting on the fence, as to whether or not, dip their toe into the world of golf a great achievement by all. My next priority (NLT 31 Dec) is to ensure the Club has appropriate catering facilities in place. My intent is to reinstate the Club kitchen and Halfway House, by means of identifying an appropriate provider who can fulfil both commitments. Finally, I am very keen to inject once again, a social scene back into the Club for the members. Hopefully all will have seen the flyers regarding the forthcoming events I encourage all to attend and enjoy these various events. Any member with a suggestion, and a nominated lead, should approach the Vice-Captain in the first instance. As always, I would like to thank John Henry and Pete Bromley for their continued dedication in capturing current topics and information for TX2 and the Web page, as these are such important means of distributing information on Club business to those on and off the Island. I look forward to meeting you all on the course or in the Clubhouse very soon. Enjoy your golf and your golfing friendships. Regards Richard Wright Chairman JSGC [D] TX2 Newsletter page 3

FROM THE LADY CAPTAIN Mrs Norma McAndrew N ever in my wildest nightmares did I envisage that I would be the Lady Captain of JSGC Dhekelia. However, here I am writing in the Club magazine!! It was with great surprise and sadness to all in the ladies section that Mandy resigned due to her promotion and subsequent transfer to Akrotiri. I know she would have been a great asset as our Lady Captain as she was young, vibrant and a good golfer, just what our section needed. However, we wish her well and hope she can still join us for the occasional game of golf. When I agreed to take on this mantle, the Ladies Section all came together and without having to be press ganged (well just a little) each and every one of them agreed to sign up and help within the Section this season, and to date, all is going to plan. A golf club is only as good as the members who participate, so don t be shy, your help within the Club is always appreciated no matter how small the contribution. Even though the Ladies Section is greatly depleted this season, our opening competition, The Chairman s Putter, was well attended and the ladies had a great day. I would like to say a big thank you to our Chairman for sponsoring this event. I will do my very best, with the help of the ladies, to make this season great with lots of golf and fun social events, and please remember, golf is only a game... so enjoy. Norma McAndrew Lady Captain A MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB MANAGER Mrs Chris Harper W elcome back to all returning Club members and good wishes for the new season. A warm welcome too to the new military members. Hopefully you will be able to find time away from work to enjoy the warm Cyprus weather and the challenges of our golf course. TX2 Newsletter page 4

A final welcome to the new non- entitled members who have, at last, been invited to join the Club. A long wait for some of you while the Club worked to become compliant but finally you can begin to enjoy your membership. As always the Club faces many challenges ranging from the weather to military directives. Be assured that the Committees work hard to deal with the issues in the best way possible for members. There is much frustration when the problems are outside our control and it seems impossible to find an acceptable solution. Your support and understanding is always helpful. Chris Harper We are often reminded that this is a military golf club but it is also a members club dependent on the support and involvement of all whatever their status. Please support your Club the competitions, the bar and shop, and now the monthly social events which are being organised to improve the social life around the Club. The Club can only be as good as the members make it! Have a great 2015/6 season Club Manager GROUNDS UPDATE FOR OCTOBER 2015 Mr John Harper T he following information was presented to the Management Committee on 6 October The various issues were discussed, as well as matters arising from the AGM minutes and the Suggestions Book. Irrigation The work to improve the irrigation of Pond is finished. The bare areas will be seeded in due course when grass seed is available. There has been an acute shortage of Bermuda grass seed in Cyprus for some time. The seed that was ordered in July has now been imported and will be delivered to the Club once the payment has been made to the supplier. John Harper The work to construct and repair Tap boxes around Grounds Member the course that started on Pond continues. The improvements will identify the locations of all the tap boxes and the irrigation lines that each box controls. It will also protect the valves from corrosion and damage. TX2 Newsletter page 5

Because of limitations imposed by Dhekelia Station, the 'grey' water is now only available to irrigate the course for one and a half hours on Tuesday and Friday mornings. The bore well water is being used to irrigate the far side of the course, but the volume and pressure are limited. There has also been a consequent increase in the amount of diesel used to fuel the generator. The pop ups on Pond and Nunnery browns have been moved off the browns to improve the areas being watered. This work has now been subsumed into the Artificial turf project. Oil for the Browns The plan to use vegetable oil on the browns, has now changed. Because the money is now available for the installation of Artificial turf, the Club has a dispensation to revert to using motor oil for this playing season. Unfortunately when the vegetable oil was returned to the supplier, the necessary motor oil was not acquired. This has meant that the browns were not prepared before the beginning of the playing season. The oil has now been purchased and collected. The Grounds staff will be oiling and sanding the browns on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings until all the browns have been treated. Repairs and Purchases The Management Committee were informed of repairs and purchases that had happened during the August and September, with necessary future purchases identified. The estimated Grounds expenditure for this year has been submitted to the Treasurer, but the Grounds budget for 2015/16 has not yet been set by the Executive Committee. Matters arising from the AGM minutes and the Suggestions book The issue of fertilizer for the fairways has been raised. The matter has been discussed in committee and the situation has not changed. There is a requirement to measure the areas of all the fairways before the fertilizer is ordered. Unfortunately the initial volunteer left Dhekelia before the measurements were completed. This is an important issue and Effion Jones has done a lot of work to advance the idea. This is a call for members to volunteer to complete the measurements. The amount of fertilizer required can then be accurately costed and ordered. Please contact the Grounds Member. The suggestion that a review of the browns is required to enable the irregular depth of sand to be rectified is now unnecessary, as the browns are being re-oiled and sanded. The suggestion that we revisit the idea of using bags of sand/seed mix to be used to infill holes on fairways caused by birds remains valid. When the grass seed is available, members will be informed and asked to volunteer to bag up the sand and seed mix. The issue of relief from stony areas on fairways was raised prior to the AGM and deferred to the Management Committee. The matter was discussed at length and the conclusion was made that the situation is so common throughout the course that attempting to define and mark all the stony areas for relief could not reasonably be achieved. The existing Local Rule providing a grips length relief will stand 'through the green'. TX2 Newsletter page 6

To the Ladies and Gentlemen of the Dhekelia Golf Club With the influx of asylum seekers and the growing needs to care for them, Oasis has been blessed with responses from so many people and organisations. We would like to say a very heart felt thank you to the members of Dhekelia Golf Club for their response to the needs of the refugees and asylum seekers here on our door steps. We are grateful for your donation of clothes and toys. So many were helped with the clothing, and the children blessed with toys and games. Having left all they have in their home countries, this gesture of love and care really does touch their hearts. We recently joined at the Dhekelia Fayre and were thrilled to have raised over 250 to go towards our work in helping the refugees. So thank you for caring and for helping us to show the love of Christ to those who live in very difficult circumstances. At any time you would like to see more of what we do, please visit our Facebook page or attend one of our events. Yours sincerely Heather Lewis On behalf of the Oasis Project. TX2 Newsletter page 7

THE DHEKELIA CLUTCH S ome golfers would equate the Clutch Chair as entering the Dragon s Den with a variety of characters and handicaps. However, being a true born Dragon I wish to disprove this myth once and for all. They are a bunch of dedicated fun going golfers that do take their golf very seriously and are always willing to assist in other manual tasks around the Club whenever required. During we will offer a similar golf programme of Tues and Thurs (hence the T & T), but this year we will introduce two additional competitions. There will be an Autumn Challenge competition during Oct/Nov with generous prizes for the top 3 Golfers. Three years ago we were invited to a Match play challenge against the Alternative Group and, with a 25 reduction in handicaps, we still thrashed them (what a win)! It had similarities to when England lost in the World Cup against Wales. Maybe that is why we never had a return match?! Being positive this year, we have accepted an annual Match Play challenge against the Ladies Section. We will be having private golf lessons leading up to this event in early November. Watch this space. We will be holding our Clutch Xmas extravaganza again this year on Tuesday 10th December at the Blue Wave, a must attend event for good singers in particular. Seriously, I am looking forward to the honour of supporting this wonderful group of 40 members over the next two years and would also welcome new Members. See you all at the Blue Wave and have a good Golfing year. Eifion Jones TX2 Newsletter page 8

LADIES OCTOBER MONTHLY MEDAL [11 Oct] From Tricia Cooper The ladies 1st medal of the season was played on Sunday 11th October. Having a reduced Ladies Section, it was agreed that there would be only one division rather than the usual two. This proved a wise decision as only 13 ladies entered, 3 of which submitted nil returns. Norma McAndrew, the newly appointed Lady Captain presented the prizes to the two winners. Penny Mulligan won with a nett 74 and Sue Walsh shot a nett 75 to take the Runners Up prize. 18 TRIVIA GOLFING USE IT UNTIL YOU LOSE IT. In 1993, it was calculated that Britain s 1,250,000 golfers lose 32.3 million golf balls each year, or about 26 balls per player per year. American golfers are far more accurate. They are reported to lose only 96 million balls every year, which is a mere four balls per player per year. In May 1916 Golf Illustrated, an article recorded that $500,000 worth of golf balls are lost each Saturday. There are also found golf balls to the value of $345,750. At Mill Ride Golf Club, Ascot, the sub-aqua team of the 1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment were dropped by helicopter on 12 December 1993 into a lake by the 3rd hole, where more than 10,000 balls were thought to have landed over the years; thousands were fished out. In a second dive the following year many more thousands were fished out. The total far exceeded the estimate of the prior year. They were all sold off, raising several thousands of pounds for charity. How about another dive in our pond Ralph!! A WORD ON NEW GOLF RULES From Malcom Newell The Veterans Golf Association has negotiated with The Royal and Ancient Golf Club, based in St Andrews Scotland, to modify the Rules of Golf for Seniors. Rule 1.a.5: A ball sliced or hooked into the rough shall be lifted and placed on the fairway at a point equal to the distance it carried or rolled into the rough with no penalty. The senior should not be penalized for tallgrass which groundskeepers failed to mow. Brian Rance TX2 Newsletter page 18

Rule 2.d.6 (b): A ball hitting a tree shall be deemed not to have hit the tree. This is simply bad luck and luck has no place in a scientific game. The senior player must estimate the distance the ball would have travelled if it had not hit the tree and play the ball from there. (Like the green on the 1st). Rule 3.b.3(g): There shall be no such thing as a lost ball. The missing ball is on or near the course and will eventually be found and pocketed by someone else, making it a stolen ball. The player is not to compound the felony by charging himself or herself with a penalty. Rule 4.c.7(h): If a putt passes over a hole without dropping, it is deemed to have dropped. The law of gravity supersedes the Rules of Golf. Rule 5: Putts that stop close enough to the cup that they could be blown in, may be blown in. This does not apply to balls more than three inches from the hole. No one wants to make a travesty of the game. Rule 6.a.9(k): There is no penalty for so-called & quote; out of bounds. If pennypinching golf course owners bought sufficient land, this would not have occurred. The senior golfer deserves an apology, not a penalty. Rule 7.g.15(z): There is no penalty for a ball in a water hazard, as golf balls should float. Senior golfers should not be penalized for manufacturers shortcomings. Rule 8.k.9(s): Advertisements claim that golf scores can be improved by purchasing new golf equipment. Since this is financially STOP PROJECTING DEAR YOU CAN PLAY GOLF impracticable for many TOMORROW senior golfers, one-half stroke per hole may be subtracted for using old equipment. Please advise all your senior friends of these important rule changes Malcom Newell WHY YOU NEVER HEAR THE PHRASE MEN ARE A MYSTERY TX2 Newsletter page 19

PHOTO CAPTION COMPETITION Sponsored by JSGC [D] Club House Although the Photo Caption Competition response remains healthy, the last one is quite female-less, not a girly caption amongst them. Albeit, and In defence of the ladies, the competition did ask for funny captions regarding a number of vehicle skills that ladies may find a tad challenging such as driving, reversing and parking. Assuming that my remark may attract some attention, I ve posted another one for your amusement. WIN A COUPLE OF BOTTLES OF CHEAP PLONK All one has to do to win is to provide a suitable caption to the photograph below. The entry judged the best will win a couple of bottles of wine courtesy of JSGC [D] Club House. THE PHOTOGRAPH This picture was taken on 20 October 2015 at the Past Members Memorial presentation and it is of the retired Royal Artillery Sergeant Mr George Colville, who is showing off his 16 year old 1 st Seniors Open Tee Shirt, bragging that after all these years it still fits him. Some useful competition conditions and proposals. This competition is open to JSGC [D] members, its Officers, its grounds and Bar Staff only. Entries that include a glimmer of humour and or wit may well have a good chance of winning. Entries will only be accepted via to the nutter writing this drivel before the next TX2 print. 24 Editor s end bits: Here it is then, the start of what hopes to be another successful Golfing season at Dhekelia that, on average, has some 30 organised matches and games per month over 9 months. This and the prospect of major improvements to the Course with the introduction of the long awaited Artificial Turf [AT] Project will make this season interesting if not exciting. I m sure it will cause many new challenges that will test the golfing patience of many grownups. Good luck to the AT Project Team and all its volunteers. Despite the fact that many of the members will be anxious about Competition disruptions caused by the AT Project, I for one feel that the Club Officers should, in my opinion, get their priorities right and address the greater concern of not getting a bacon sandwich at the Halfway House. I do miss that halfway bacon sandwich opportunity. Let s hope someone takes the Halfway House on. You may have noticed that 30% of this edition of TX2 has been infected by members who believe they have a sense of humour, of sorts. I m just teasing. A Sincere thankyou to all those who took the trouble in contributing to our Club Newsletter, without it there wouldn t be one. Well, not as comical as this one anyway. After many years of running the Wednesday afternoon Ball Sweep, the Golfing bandit Angelo Calodoucas has taken a back seat for medical reasons. At one point the Sweep looked to be terminated. Until that is, John McLaughlin and a couple of helpers, stepped up and saved the game. A huge thankyou to Angelo for his dedication, and of course the same to John for taking over the reins. Well done big Bob Homer in winning the Photo Caption Comp, yet again! Many thanks to Morgan John for proof reading this bundle of polluted squiggle. Before I finish, I m sure most will have seen the beautiful if not somewhat poignant picture Remembrance hanging on the West wall of the Clubhouse, taken and donated by Golfer extraordinaire Noel Green. Being personally interested in all things imagery and pictorial I stumbled on Noel s Web Page to learn that he is a successful amateur photographer. With Noel s permission, I thought some members may be interested in taking butchers hook at his work at: I wonder if he uses a Kodak Brownie 127.
