CRUISING ROTARY.ORG by Rotary District 6110 Ghost Writer I d bet that many of you, like me, seldom visit the Rotary International website. It s pretty easy to get so wrapped up in your club s activities that we don t pay much attention to our parent organization. So when the ADG in our club recently asked me to write an article about Cruising the RI website, I had some homework to do. And I have to tell you I was impressed, and in some cases, surprised at what I found. An article summarizing all that s there would be impractically long, but hopefully by highlighting a few interesting things I found in just a few minutes, I ll pique your curiosity enough to go take a look for yourself. The site, for the humungous amount of information presented, is quite easy to navigate. Traveling? There s an easy to use club locator, and it will tell you not only the club name, but meeting place/day/time, and contact information. You say you re already on the road? RI has you covered. They have apps available for iphones, Androids, and soon Blackberries. There is a link called how to join. This came as a surprise, because I had always thought that potential members were recruited by current Rotarians. I was wrong. On RI s site, a civilian can answer a few questions online, and RI will put that person in touch with a local club for follow-up. How about that? There s a pretty cool world map on which you can scroll over various locations to see photos of projects in those areas. We re everywhere! Now I m pretty old-fashioned, and I don t do this social networking bit. But a lot of folks do, especially the younger ones we are trying to bring into Rotary. I learned that RI is on FaceBook, Flickr, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, and one of our own called Rotary Voices. That last one gives us the opportunity to publish Rotary projects on all levels. Call it bragging rights. Here s a nice surprise. United Airlines recently donated about 2.5 million airline miles to Rotary to be used for humanitarian purposes. How cool is that? A perennial problem in Rotary is keeping new members. RI has extensive information on their site for new Rotarians, and I think more importantly, for trainers. I say that because Rotary is so big that it s a bit overwhelming for a newbie. A Club Trainer with the right materials can spoon-feed much of this great information to make it easier to grasp. You could spend hours cruising Rotary.org, and even if you did, it is constantly changing. As I said earlier, a pretty impressive job of web design makes it easy to look around. I saw all the above items in only ten minutes or so. How about you? I ll bet you can find several more items of interest in about that much time. Perhaps some tools for your club s use too. 10 year Celebration Charley and Frances Scott of the Bentonville/Bella Vista Daybreak Club. Holiday Island Rotary celebrated its 10th year of existence with a celebration March 30th. Approximately 160 Islanders were there to enjoy the wine, cheese and chocolate and learn about the past decade of service provided by the club. Charley, Ed Clifford, and Dale Snodgrass (deceased) were key players in getting the Holiday Island club chartered. The club recognized these individuals with a big THANK YOU and gave Charley a token of our appreciation. We are proud to be in 6110 and thank anyone who played a role in our charter.

Eureka Springs Rotary Golf Classic Rotary News The Eureka Springs Rotary Club has announced that their Annual Golf Classic will be held Friday May 4, 2012, beginning at 9 am. Holiday Island clubhouse course. The tourney is played as a 4 person scramble, with men s, women s and mixed teams. Single golfers are welcome and will be placed on a team Flights and divisions will be determined after play based on number of teams and scores. Holiday Island members will be charged $45, non-members $60. Lunch will be served following the round with awards and door prizes given out. Once again, on Thursday night May 3, 5:30 to 7 pm., a silent auction, wine and cheese Karaoke mixer will be featured at the Clubhouse lounge. A putting contest will be held just off the new deck at the clubhouse. Applications can be picked up at the Clubhouse, or on line at Eureka Rotary Club.com. Dave Baker, Golf Chairman ( ) says that Rotary promises a good time for everyone. The Eureka Springs Rotary Club will offer scholarships for deserving graduating Seniors, as has been done in the past. This makes the tourney particularly PDG John Brodbeck of D6110 has been chosen as a member of the RIYE committee which advises RI on YE matters. In the recent past (an perhaps still), that committee consisted of 5 persons, worldwide, serving staggered three-year terms. SCRYE's Jaci Williams and Alan Wylie both served last year. Jaci rolled off this year. Alan has two more years, I believe. In my experience, John has always been a great advocate of YE, having helped with interviews when ever he could, as well as addressing YE gatherings whenever he could. Paul Reagan, SCRYE Recording Secretary

Barbecue with the Best Sponsors, vendors, cooks applications now available; Annual Rotary Boots & BBQ Festival, May 11-12: Backyard barbecue afficionados and smoking pros alike will be congregating at the Will Rogers Downs east of Claremore on May 11 and 12 (Friday and Saturday) to cook some of the best barbecue to be found in Oklahoma during the 11 th Annual Claremore Reveille Rotary Club s Boots & BBQ Festival event. This event is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, and trained certified judges will be determining the winners in each category, Rotarian Richard Mosier, event co-chair, explained, and some of our past winners have gone on to win other national cook-offs. But not all winners have been professionals. You could say, this is no amateur performance, but it is open to amateurs, Mosier said. However, if your secret barbecue recipe has earned raves from family and friends, don t let that stop you from entering the competition, which offers $12,000 in cash prizes to the winners. It s one of the largest KCBS cash purses in Oklahoma. You can learn more about KCBS rules and regulations at Because of the growing reputation of Claremore s event, more judges than ever before have applied to judge the barbecue samples, according to Mosier. Approximately 45 teams vied for the trophy and cash prizes last year. Many return as competitors year after year, he added, because we are consistent. They like us and we like them. Categories include beef brisket, pork ribs, pork butt, chicken and dessert. Although entrants are expected to provide their own meat for these categories, those who enter the People s Choice category will have meat provided. Each team may also enter more than one category with one $200 entry fee. The fee includes a space and water, septic and electric amenities. Making the Festival a family event is the sponsors and vendors who add to the outdoors atmosphere that invites the entire family to come out for a day of fun, food and fellowship. On Friday, the main activities will be arrival of the entrants, vendors and entertainment. Saturday morning at 10 a.m. the festival opens with vendor and entertainment activities, pony rides, inflatables, arts and crafts booths, and live entertainment. Will Rogers Downs Cherokee Casino is the presenting sponsor and provides access to a variety of entertainment options including live racing. Other major sponsors Jack Kissee Ford, HydroHoist and RCB Bank. Barbecue entrants, sponsorships and vendors are now being accepted. Six sponsorship levels are available, ranging from $250 and upwards. Vendor booth spaces for businesses and non-profits are open, subject to approval. Vendor applications are being screened to avoid duplication of products and services, giving those who participate the maximum exposure and return on their investment. Business vendors pay $150, while non-profits, who must also have committee approval, will be charged $40 for their space. This event is not just about the barbecue, it is also an opportunity for area nonprofits, election candidates and groups to get their message out to the greater Rogers County community. Proceeds from the Boots & BBQ event benefit Claremore Reveille Rotary s projects, which include personalized dictionaries for Rogers County third graders, building an elementary school in Kenya, water wells in Nicaragua, shoes for Orphan Souls, the Medical Supply Network, End Polio Now, RYLA Student Sponsors, scholarships for area students, Will Rogers Day Parade and leadership training. This is our biggest fundraiser, says Mosier. The public participates by purchasing a taster s kit for $6 and sampling all of the entries. They can then cast a ballot for the best barbecue, which will receive the People s Choice award. For more information, go to the club s website at and download a brochure with an entry form or sponsorship application.

Wheelchairs delivered to Children's Hospital in Guanajuato, Mexico 28 Rotarians and family members from 5 Rotary clubs in District 6110 recently returned from a wheelchair delivery trip to Guanajuato, Mexico. They were accompanied by Chris Lewis from the American Wheelchair Mission, his daughter Tia, AWM photographers Randy and Jeff, plus wheelchair manufacturer Mike. The chairs were funded primarily by the Rotary Clubs in Northwest Arkansas, with help from the John Tyson Elementary School in Springdale. On Friday, over 300 chairs were delivered to the CRIT center, a disabled children's hospital in Guanajuato. The families had carried their children to the center and waited in line or in the outdoor presentation area for as long as 7 hours to receive a chair for their children! Each child's name was called out and, when they were brought forward, a Rotarian personally lifted the child from their parent's arms and placed them into their new chair, to the cheers of the assembled crowd. It was a very moving and emotional experience for everyone in the group, especially when some of the children were able to wheel themselves away under their own power. Freedom for the first time - for the child and for their families! Saturday found the Rotarians back at the CRIT center to divide up into 3 groups for delivery to individual children who couldn't be at the center on Friday. Each group had one boy and one girl who received their chairs in their own homes. It was a completely different and more personal experience than the group delivery had been. The Rotarians were met with happy smiles and friendly waves from family and friends who had gathered to see the child be placed into their new chair. It was very rewarding to see the child begin to explore their neighborhood on their own for the first time! Sunday was a free day for some of the group to discover San Miguel, an ex-pat locale nearby. The Pope had just been in Leon and Guanajuato the previous week, so there were still several festivals in the downtown Plaza near our hotel, the Camino Real. The group included Springdale Rotarians Noel ("Jefe") Morris and wife Sandy, Judy Hammond and husband John, Jim Crouch and wife Cathy, Chris Weiser and wife Debby, Gary Piker and wife Aletha, and Jeff Wood; Rogers Rotarians Wendy and Chad Kumpe; Tulsa Rotarian and past District Governor Wallace Williams and wife Anne; Mountain Home Rotarians Elton and Mary Kirby and granddaughter Sierra Stone, Rip and Carol Gresham and granddaughter Jameson Gresham, and Larry and Brenda Nelson with grandsons Luke and Isaac Hannon; plus Wade Robson from the Bull Shoals-Lakeview club. Thanks, "Jefe", for putting together another monumental and memorable trip. Everyone agreed that it was probably the best wheelchair delivery trip that we've ever done - and all of us are ready to go again next year! Submitted by Brenda Nelson, Mountain Home, AR.

6110 Membership Currently we have two clubs entered into the contest. Your club s weekly meetings are an opportunity to share something positive in your life, that s Rotary. Your guests will have the opportunity to enjoy the fellowship, enrich their professional and personal knowledge, and meet others within the community. Share your Rotary experience! The object of this Membership Contest is to bring new Rotary members into our clubs and make our presence known to those who are not familiar with Rotary. The membership drive began on January 1, 2012 and end on June 30, Each participating club will keep a record of Every Potential Member Guest at a club s meeting, which will count as one point with a maximum of 4 visits per individual guest. (A potential member guests is a guest that has an interest in becoming a member and not just a visitor.) Each month these points are to be submitted to District Membership Co-Chair Herb Orr from the club s attendance keeper with the following information: 1. Beginning club s current membership January 1, Potential Member Guest total for the month. 3. The number of new members inducted in the club The DEADLINE for each submission will be the 15 th of the following month. This allows a club 15 days to submit data which corresponds to District attendance submissions. The total points plus the number of inductees (which have a value of 10 points each) are then divided by the total number of members as of January 1. Each month the top 20 clubs will be published within the District Website and District Newsletter. In the July report to Herb Orr include a total count of every new member inducted from January 1, 2011 through June 30, The number of Potential Member Guests and include the ending club s total membership as of June 30, 2012 The Grand Prize Winning Club will be announced in the August Rotary District 6110 Newsletter and Website. The winning Rotary club will also be recognized at District Conference. **The Grand Prize - is a Traveling Membership Trophy with the club s name and year engraved on the trophy, plus a dinner for two at a local restaurant. **Runner-up Prize will be announced but it will be nice! Any questions contact - Herb Orr at herborr@sbcglobal.net or THE OFFICIAL DISTRICT WEBSITE
