1 64 THE AMERICAN GOLFER BY "THE COLONEL" FOR THE SECOND consecutive year M r. George W. Adair won the city championship of Atlanta, which was played over the course of the Druid Hills Club during the latter part of September. While the entry list in this tournament was not as large this year as last yet there were over one hundred and sixty players who started in the qualifying round, which was won by Little Bob Jones with a 79, which is good going over this course, which is more than six thousand yards in length and on which there is plenty of trouble awaiting the player who is a little off with his tee shots. In this tournament Mr. Adair had to dispose of three of the younger generation of golfers before he again acquired the title of city champion. The first one of the youngsters he had to meet was R. S. Hickey, who has been playing a lot of golf over the course of the Capital City Club at Brookhaven and who gave evidence of being a youngster who in a short while will be a match for any golfer to meet. In fact, Mr. Adair had to go at his best clip to get away with this match. Then he met Little Bob Jones in the semi-final and beat him on the sixteenth green. This was the first time that Little Bob has been defeated in any tournament since the Southern championship in June and in that time he had won the championship of both the Atlanta Athletic and the Druid Hills Clubs. The final of this tournament, as in the Athletic Club championship, was a father and son contest, but instead of it being the Jones family it was Perry Adair and his father and instead of the son beating his father as in the Athletic Club championship, it was a case of the "old man" reversing the adage "youth will be served" and giving his son a trimming. In their match in the final Perry and his father were all even at the end of the morning round but in the afternoon the "old man," who says that he can't play well in the morning, set a pace which was too fast for the young man to hold and finished the match on the thirty-second green 5 up and 4 to play. This was the second time this season that Mr. Adair and Perry have met in the final of a tournament and on both occasions the "old man" has won. The first time they met this year was in the final of the invitation tournament held by the Country Club of Montgomery last June and the father triumphed over the son three and two. Then came the Druid Hills tournament but the son was not able to get revenge as in the afternoon round Mr. Adair played perfect golf and every slip the boy made cost him a hole.

2 THE AMERICAN GOLFER 65 This city championship tournament has now become a fixture in Atlanta and next year it will again be played in September and will take place over the course of the Atlanta Athletic Club at East Lake. AFTER THE COMPLETION of the city championship the Druid Hills Club gave a women's invitation tournament, which was the largest tournament of its kind ever held in the South, having almost as many entries as the Southern championship, which was held in Birmingham last May and which had the largest number of entries of any previous tournament. As was generally expected this tournament was won by Miss Alexa Stirling, the present holder of the Southern championship title and who made such a fine showing in the women's national championship a few weeks ago. In none of her matches did she have any serious difficulty and she was never forced to go to the last green before the match was over. In her final match she met Mrs. W. C. Hall, who had defeated Mrs. T. B. Paine, runner-up in the Southern championship, and who was playing in her first tournament and while she put up a game fight there was never any doubt about the result of the match after the first hole as Miss Stirling was playing her usual brilliant game. Miss Stirling won the first two holes and the third was a half in five. Mrs. Hall then squared the match by taking the next two holes with fives from the Southern champion. This was, however, the last time the players were on even terms as Miss Stirling took the next four holes and was therefore four up at the turn. She also won the tenth with a nice five, which put her five up. The next two holes were halved and a fine three at the thirteenth, which was one under par, won her the match 6 up and 5 to play. The list of the winners of the various flights is as follows: Second Flight. Mrs. O. P. Richardson defeated Mrs. T. Williams, 3 and 2. Third Flight. Mrs. Charles Collier defeated Miss Virginia Abercrombie of Montgomery, 1 up in 19 holes. Fourth Flight. Mrs. Harry Harmon, Jr., defeated Mrs. L. T. Stallings, 6 and 5. Fifth Flight. Mrs. Milton Dargan, Jr., defeated Miss Josephine Mobley, 3 and 2. Defeated Eight, First Flight. Mrs. R. T. Jones defeated Mrs. T. Latham, 6 and 5. Defeated Eight, Second Flight. Mrs. Garrett Wall, of Richmond, defeated Mrs. E. L. Brown, of Birmingham, 5 and 4. Defeated Eight, Third Flight. Miss Serena Kirkpatrick, of Birmingham, defeated Mrs. Arthur Powell, 5 and 4. Defeated Eight, Fourth Flight. Miss Margaret Taylor defeated Mrs. M. F. Holohan, 3 and 2. Defeated Eight, Fifth Flight. Mrs. Arthur Reed defeated Mrs. W. B. Carlton, 5 and 4. JUST BECAUSE Mr. Ellis Knowles has not been one of the entrants in any of the various invitation tournaments or in the Southern championship for the last few years don't think for a minute that he has thrown his clubs into Pensacola Bay and given up the Royal and Ancient game. It is true that he hasn't had much tournament play for the past three or four years but it is also true that he hasn't forgotten how to hit 'em from the tee and wield that battle-ax iron club of his as was evidenced by his winning the tournament recently played by the members of the University Club of New York. Going to New York about the middle of last month for a visit of several weeks he, as all true golfers do, car-

3 66 THE AMERICAN GOLFER ried his clubs with him in the hope of getting a few rounds over the courses he formerly played during the time he was a member of the Yale golf team. Upon his arrival he found that he was eligible to play in the University Club tournament, which was to be a medal play handicap event, eighteen holes of which were to be played over the Piping Rock course and eighteen holes out at Nassau. Going out to Locust Valley he played the Piping Rock course, which was the first time he was ever on the course in his life, in 83. Going out he had trouble at the fourth where took a six and at the sixth where he took a seven and took 46 to do the first nine holes. However, he got going coming home and had three threes, two fours and four fives, which gave him 37 for the last nine and 83 for the round. Moving over to Nassau he found himself on familiar ground as it was on this course in 1907 that he won the Intercollegiate championship. He was out in 38 and was moving at a fast clip on the homeward journey but unfortunately for him the sunlight did not last quite long enough and he had to play the last two holes when it was so dark that it was almost impossible to see the ball. RHEA, of the Memphis Country Club, President of the Trans-Mississippi Golf Association. even with this handicap he was home in 40, which gave him 78 for the round and a total of 161 for the thirty-six holes, which was good enough to win the low score by nine strokes in figuring the best gross score and by four strokes in figuring the best net score. As no player was allowed under the rules of the tournament to win more than one prize Mr. Knowles took the gold medal for the low gross score. His work was the talk of the tournament and it revived in the minds of many the fact that in 1907, when he won the Intercollegiate championship, that the worst round he had in that tournament, which was played at Nassau, was a 78. The golfers of the South will be pleased to learn of Mr. Knowles's success and it is to be hoped that next year will again see him as one of the contestants in all of the tournaments held by the various clubs in the land of sunshine and flowers. FIVE YEARS AGO the present amateur champion of Virginia Matthew White Paxton, Jr. was a caddie for the then champion, Mr. Wm. H. Palmer, Jr., of Richmond. By a singular coincidence the two met in the final for the 1915 championship at the Roanoke Country Club course, the

4 THE AMERICAN GOLFER 67 erstwhile caddie winning. He is the youngest champion that Virginia ever had. He started playing when he was 11 years old and was just a little over 17 when he won the State championship. He is in his sophomore year at Washington & Lee University. HERBERT H. BARKER, the former professional at the Country Club of Virginia, Richmond, Va., who went back to England two or three months ago, has joined the Aeroplane Division of the British Army and is now "somewhere in France." THE PLANETS combined to bring good luck to some golfers at the various clubs in Louisville, Ky., on Sept. 22 as it proved a most auspicious time for holing in one. In a friendly match at the Audubon Country Club Mr. G. E. Evans sent a tee roller into No. 13 cup, advertising himself as the only one-timer of the day; but he was only of Audubon. For the news was quickly flashed that Mr. Walter Lapp from his high perch in "the crow's nest" at the Standard Club had dropped a sky-rocket into the circus ring, which gently trickled into the hole. Following that, returns from the Louisville Country Club showed that the "old reliable" had qualified in this contest when Mr. C. M. Bridge's tee-shot found its way down the hill, onto the sixteenth green, straight into the cup, a distance of 185 yards. Incidentally while playing at the Louisville Country Club last season Mr. E. D. Mason scored a "one" on the same hole made by Mr. Bridges, while Mr. E. D. Mason seized his one shortly before, by holing his tee shot on the old No. 5 lake hole, a distance of 175 yards, at the Cherokee links. Louisville now supports three 18 holes and one 9 holes courses. More enthusiasm has been shown this year than ever before. The Kentucky State championship was played this year over the Louisville Country Club course and the City championship over the Audubon. A LUCKY PIECE or "mascot" is of wonderful aid, and oftimes brings victory, thought one of the fair golfers at the Audubon Country Club, just before starting in a match against a worthy opponent. I'll carry my "lucky coin" presented me by Mr. Blank thought she, as it has never failed to bring me victory. The start was made, and although things broke badly through several holes for the holder of the lucky coin "hope springs eternal" and after each fleeting hole she settled down more steadily to her task. But even with her superior knowledge of the game, and its intricacies, she soon began to realize that somehow her efforts were of no avail. Throughout the game she had noticed one particular strange iron club being used by her opponent, with a skill that was surprising, and finally in desperation she inquired of her, "What club is that you are using?" "Oh," came the reply, "it's that old iron Mr. Blank gave me some time ago." To the loser's mind there was but one fair way for this match to have ended, with each possessing "mascots" from the same donor, and that was "all level." MR. CHAS. EVANS and Mr. D. E. Sawyer of Chicago will visit Louisville on Oct. 30 and 31 as the guests of Mr. Chas. Middleton of the Louisville Country Club. They will play over the Audubon Country Club course on Saturday morning and the Louisville Country Club course Sat-

5 68 THE AMERICAN GOLFER urday afternoon and Sunday, playing thirty-six holes each day. This will be a treat to the local enthusiasts as no doubt some high class golf will develop during the rounds. MISS JULIA MULDOON, one of the strongest of the women golfers in Louisville, had the lowest selected score at the Audubon Country Club. This trophy was donated by Mrs. Edith Collings Fiske. Miss Muldoon's winning card was 71. MISS KATHLEEN JENNINGS won the women's championship of the Audubon Country Club, beating Mrs. MR. J. C. ALLISON, of Birmingham, won the first Alabama State championship, which was played at the Country Club of Montgomery, beating Judge R. N. Clarke, of Mobile, 11 up and 10 to play in the 36 holes final. The tournament was under the auspices of the Alabama State Golf Association, which was organized in July last. The second annual tournament will be held in the spring on the course of the Roebuck Golf and Automobile Club at Birmingham. WORK is progressing on the new 18 holes course at Palm Beach, which Club-house of the Memphis Country Club. E. D. Mason in the final by 6 up and 5 to play. MR. WILL GUNN won the club championship of the Idle Hour Country Club, of Macon, Ga., beating Mr. J. C. McAfee, 1 up in the final. At the end of the morning round Mr. McAfee had Mr. Gunn no less than 7 down. The latter, however, got going in the afternoon, doing a 76, and incidentally beating his record, and finally emerged a winner by the narrow margin of one hole. In the consolation division Mr. J. M. Cutler beat Mr. T. E. Blackshear in the final by 7 up and 5 to play. The medal in the qualifying round was won by Mr. Horace Wright, with an 82. will doubtless be in shape for next season. DR. B. D. CHOATE is the club champion of the Cherokee Country Club, of Louisville, Ky. He beat Dr. P. F. Barbour in the final, at the 37th hole. MR. C. C. NOTTINGHAM was elected President of the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club at the annual meeting, together with the following officers: Messrs. J. P. Hoskins, vice- President; S. L.
