1 Georgia State Men s Golf Newsletter From the Coaches Desk... First, happy holidays to everyone! We live in a crazy world with a lot going on around us, so let s all be thankful for everything and everyone we have. The team will start exams next week and are anxious to get started after the holiday break to show what they are capable of doing. During the fall season they simply put too much pressure on themselves. It is such a common thing in golf, which we all know is a mental game, to get out of your comfort zone. We had four players coming back from a team that went to the NCAA Championship and everyone felt like, in an unspoken way, that we would really be good this year. However, something happened on the way to the first tee and they call that putting pressure on themselves and the results did not come up as what they expected. I will repeat to you this is a great group of young men who do everything the right way and I have a lot of confidence that we will get back on track this spring. We had our ring ceremony last night at the Georgia State vs. Green Bay men s basketball game and the guys were like the proverbial kid in a candy store for getting their conference championship rings. They were smiling, taking photos and in general acting like year old guys should. They next thing on the agenda is to take care of business when things get started again at the SunTrust Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. in early February. I cannot tell you how much we appreciate the support our booster club and Georgia State University family give us. We are planning a fundraiser, probably in April, and hopefully we will have exciting plans to talk about. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you and we will be back in touch in January as the spring season gets underway. From the Editor s Desk... The fall officially flew bye and for that matter, 2014 did as well. What a great year it was for the Georgia State men s golf team. We don t always get a chance to sit back and reflect on life as much as we should, but just think about some of these accomplishments over the last 12 months: Won the Sun Belt Conference Championship Finished second at the NCAA San Antonio Regional, the best regional finish in school history Finished 22nd at the NCAA Championship, beating the likes of Florida State, Auburn and Southern Cal. Won three straight tournaments in the spring, also a first in school history. Saw five players graduate, including Tyler Gruca who never missed an event in four years and stepped up big when it mattered most. That is an incredible year when you think about it and we were humbled by all of the support we received from the Panther Family. As we approach the end of the year, we have a lot to be thankful for. Too often in life we look at the things that we don t have rather than appreciating the things we do have. That doesn t mean you don t want to get better or look to build more, but if you appreciate what you do have, life will always be a little sweeter. I hope you enjoy this issue that includes a recap of some of our fall events, including a photo of the men s golf ring ceremony just last night at the men s basketball game. 2 GSU Finishes 7th at Rain-Shortened AutoTrader.com Collegiate Georgia State, the defending AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic champions shot rounds of 292 and 283 to finished tied for seventh at the rain-shortened event at Berkeley Hills Country Club. UNC Greensboro topped the 12-team field by three strokes at 14-under following rounds of 284 and 278. The Spartans finished three shots ahead of VCU. Individually, UNC Greensboro s Carter Jenkins won by two strokes. Jenkins shot rounds of 69 and 67 to lead a pair of golfers at 6-under. For the Panthers, Alexander Herrmann, who is compet- ing as an individual, tied for fourth at 4-under par following back-to-back rounds of 70. We had some glimpses of shooting a really good score to- day, head coach Joe Inman said. We just made too many mistakes and on that golf course, you cannot make mistakes as they will penalize you. Herrmann made four birdies in each round and has now shot 71 or better in his last four rounds. His brother, Max Herrmann tied for 11th, also competing as an individual. The freshman shot rounds of 75 and 67 to stand at 2-under. His second round included six birdies. Chattanooga finished in third-place at 8-under, three shots behind VCU and six behind UNC Greensboro. Troy came in fourth-place at 7-under par, followed by South Alabama in fifth at 5-under. The Jaguars shot a 13-under 275 second round, tied for the second-lowest round in the four-year his- tory of the tournament. Jenkins finished ahead of Chattanooga s Liam Johnston and teammate Taylor Coalson by two strokes. Each stood at 6-under par following rounds of 71 and 67. A group of five tied for fourth at 4-under par, including Troy s Phillip Brennan, South Alabama s Michael Garretson, Mercer s Emmanuel Kountakis, VCU s Jamie Clare along with Herrmann. The field included seven top 100 squads in the latest Golfweek rankings. Sophomore Nathan Mallonee opened with a morning- round 70 and followed with a 74 in the afternoon to stand even par and tied for 19th. Junior J.J. Grey shot a first round 75 and followed it with a 2-under 70 in the afternoon to stand in a tie for 26th at 1-over par. Grey eagled the par-5 10th during his second round. Senior Damon Stephenson shot a pair of 73s and stand tied for 34th at 2-over. Stephenson made eight birdies during the two rounds. Senior Davin White rebounded after a tough opening- round 82 to shoot 66 in the afternoon and tied for 43rd at 4-over par. White made eight birdies during the second round to shoot the lowest round of day one. White tied with senior Gus Wagoner who shot back-to- back 74s. 3 Panthers Finish 10th at UNCG Bridgestone The Georgia State men s golf team shot a final round 16-over 304 to finish 10th at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate at the Grandover Resort. The Panthers finished 29-over for the 54- hole event. Senior Damon Stephenson led the Panthers with a final round 73, while senior Davin White and junior J.J. Grey tied for 27th. I would be lying if I didn t say we were all disappointed with how today went, head coach Joe Inman said. We had a great opportunity to move up the leaderboard and we were not able to take advantage of good scoring opportunities. Our fall season is now over and we will evaluate every part of our program to make sure that we are ready and focused when the spring comes. We still can reach all of our goals this season, but we are going to have to work better to accomplish them. Stephenson made three birdies en route to the 1-over round. He finished the 54-hole event at 8-over par and tied for 35th. Grey shot a final round 3-over 75 and finished 7-over for the tournament, tied for 27th. White finished the event with a 79 on Sunday to also finish at 7-over and tied with Grey. Sophomore Nathan Mallonee tied with Stephenson for 35th after shooting 77 on Sunday to finish at 8-over. Freshman Alexander Herrmann rounded out the Panthers line-up with a final round 79 to finish tied for 70th at 20-over par. Freshman Max Herrmann, competing as an individual, shot a 1-over 73 in the final round to finish at 5-over par and tied for 19th. No. 21 North Carolina shot a tournament-low 7-under 281 to finish at 15-under and win the event by 12 strokes over No. 33 Virginia Tech. The Hokies finish at 3-under par after shooting 290 on Sunday. Chattanooga finished third at 8-over, followed by South Alabama at 12-over. Mercer rounded out the top five at 14-over. North Carolina s Ben Griffin, ranked No. 33 by Golfstat, shot a final round 5-under 67 to earn low medalist honors by one- stroke at 10-under par. Virginia Tech s Scott Vincent finished second at 9-under, followed by teammate Trevor Cone in third at 7-under. North Carolina s William Register, ranked No. 22 in the nation finished fourth at 6-under. Purdue s Austin Eoff, South Alabama s Daniel Jansen and Chattanooga s Andrew Weathers rounded out the top five at 2-under par. Georgia State made its fourth straight appearance in UNCG s annual event. The 13-team field featured three teams currently ranked in the top 50 by Golfweek and 12 teams in the top 100.
