1 Georgia State Men s Golf Newsletter From the Coaches Desk... Well, last week at the Furman Intercollegiate the team finally started playing like Jared and I have felt like they could play all year. Having the week before serve as spring break, we where really able practice and play everyday. We played in the Linger Longer Invitational at the end of the week and four days later played Furman, the rhythm started showing back up in everyone s game. Top to bottom, everyone looked better and that is a great feeling for a coach to feel. There are still things we are working on and I really believe we have not played our best tournament yet, but next week at Charlotte (Irish Creek Intercollegaite) will be a big for us to move high enough in GolfStat that we know we will qualify for NCAA Regional play without having to win conference. I want to brag on our student-athletes a little bit. First the student part. I am not sure if we communicated in our last newsletter that our team GPA during the fall was We had four students earn GPAs of 4.0 or better. (J.J. Grey , Nathan Mallonee - 4.0, Alexander 4.16 and Max Herrmann 4.16) It makes me feel incredible that these young men are serious about their studies top to bottom and emphasize what we hold as an ideal of the student-athlete. These men young men live it every day and you should be really proud of them for that. Second, the athlete part. They work-out hard three times a week, they have adversity of our golf course being 21 miles away, yet they still get there with a good attitude and I thank them for that. Although the season started out poorly this year, we are rounding into shape and I really believe that we have a team in many respects are better than the one from last year. Alot can happen when you start to play your best golf of the season at the end, just like we did last year. Stay tuned because there could be some fireworks coming over the next two months! Coach Inman From the Editor s Desk... The spring season has officially flown by. We apologize for no newsletter earlier as the month of March was basically a blur. As Coach Inman alluded to in his column, the team is playing its best golf of the season just at the right time. If you look at most of Georgia State s teams, they all seem to be doing this same. Think about this, over the last month, the nation got to see men s basketball coach Ron Hunter and his squad shock Baylor in the NCAA tournament. Our baseball program is ranked No. 1 in the Sun Belt and our sand volleyball is ranked No. 7 in the nation after defeating No. 4 Florida State just a few weeks ago. Our softball program had its longest winning streak in program history just snapped. All of these things come together to show you how the University is quickly growing, so it should be no surprise that men s golf is now playing its best golf of the season after a dominating 16-stroke win at the Furman Intercollegiate. Furman was where the Panthers magical run started last year. After the trip to Greenville, S.C., the Panthers won again at Irish Creek, won the Sun Belt Conference tournament and then finished second at the NCAA San Antonio Regional to advance to the NCAA Championship. Maybe this is the start of things to come. We hope you enjoy this month s newsletter. We have included recaps of all of the spring tournaments. Congrats are also in order to J.J. Grey who was named the Sun Belt Golfer of the Month for March on Wednesday. As Coach Inman said, this program is on the upswing once again and the next two months could be a lot of fun. Go Panthers! 2 Panthers Dominate Furman Intercollegiate Led by top four finishes from junior J.J. Grey and senior Davin White, Georgia State defended its title with a 16-stroke victory at the Furman Intercollegiate. Grey earned his third top-two finish of the month while White earned his first top five of the year. Georgia State shot a final round even par 288 to finish the 54-hole event at 6-under. The Panthers 16-stroke victory marks the seventh-largest margin of victory in program history and third top three team finish during the month of March. Grey shot a final round 72 to finish in second place at 7-under par. After winning the Southern Intercollegiate just over a week ago, it was his second second-place finish of the month. White shot a 1-under 71 on Sunday to finish at 5-under and alone in fourth-place. I m really proud of the entire team, head coach Joe Inman said. They played great all weekend and stepped up when it mattered. We knew this tournament was important if we wanted to move into a spot to have a chance at an at- large spot in NCAA Regional play. This gets us a lot closer to that goal. Senior Damon Stephenson added a 2-under 70 on Sunday to finish tied for 11th at even par. Freshman Max Herrmann added a 3-over 75 to finish tied for 33rd, while sophomore Nathan Mallonee shot a final round 4-over 76 to tie for 54th. Freshman Alexander Herrmann, competing as an individual, shot a 3-over 75 on Sunday to finish the event 2-over and tied for 19th. Senior Gus Wagoner and fresh- man Hayden Poole, also competing as individuals, shot 74 and 79 on Sunday. Wagoner finished tied for 44th at 8-over, while Poole tied for 104th at 23-over. The Panthers finished 16 strokes ahead of second-place Jacksonville as the Dolphins finished 10-over. No. 46 Troy finished third at 11-over, while Francis Marion and Temple tied for fourth at 12-over. Georgia State finished 30 strokes ahead of eighth-place and No. 31-ranked Virginia Tech. Temple s Brandon Matthews earned low medalist hon- ors at 10-under par, three strokes ahead of Grey. Western Carolina s J.T. Poston, ranked No. 36 by GolfStat, placed third at 6-under, one stroke ahead of White. Wofford s Jer- emy Grab shot a final round 66 to finish fifth at 4-under par SCHEDULE Date Day Tournament Course/Location Location/Result Fall /12-14 Fri.-Sun. 3 Grey Wins Southern Intercollegiate Georgia State junior J.J. Grey shot a 4-under, 140 to win the one-day, 36-hole Southern Intercollegiate hosted by Georgia and GRU-Augusta at Athens Country Club in Athens, Ga. Grey led the Panthers to a second-place finish, giving Georgia State back-to-back top-three finishes. Following an opening round 72, Grey shot 68 in the af- ternoon, making eight birdies during his round, including a stretch of four-straight on the front nine. It was his second- straight top-two finish as he finished at 4-under. I m really happy with the way the entire team played, head coach Joe Inman said. We took the momentum we built last week and continued it today. J.J. played really well and I was glad to see him earn another victory. Hopefully we can continue that momentum into the Linger Longer Invitational this weekend. Senior Davin White and sophomore Nathan Mallonee shot rounds of to finish tied for 19th at 4-over par, while freshman Max Herrmann added a pair of 76 s to tie for 34th. Freshman Alexander Herrmann rounded out the start- ing line-up with back-to-back rounds of 78 to tie for 50th. Senior Damon Stephenson, competing as an individual, shot to tie for 12th, while senior Gus Wagoner shot to tie for 50th. Freshman Hayden Poole rounded out the Panthers in the field shooting to tie for 73rd. Georgia State shot a final round 9-over 295 to finish 12th at the Linger Longer Invitational on the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Plantation on Sunday. A pair of Pan- thers finished in the top 30 in a field that featured seven teams among the top 35 in the nation. After shooting even par over 36 holes on Saturday, the Panthers finished 9-over for the tournament. Senior Davin White and junior J.J. Grey each finished among the top 30 at 1-over par for the 54-hole event. Everyone on the team had at least one good round this weekend, but we were not consistent for the weekend, head coach Joe Inman said. We knew that we would have to play our best golf against an NCAA Regional-caliber field. We play well, but definitely not well enough. We have some stuff to work on this week before we return to the course next weekend. White shot a final round 72 that included three birdies to finish tied for 30th with Grey who shot a final round 74. Freshman Max Herrmann shot 77 on Sunday to finish tied for 56th at 5-over. It marked the first time in six tournaments this year that Herrmann has finished outside the top 25. Sophomore Nathan Mallonee added a 2-over 74 in the final round to finish at 7-over and tied for 61st with team- mate Damon Stephenson who shot 77 on Sunday. Alexander Herrmann, competing as an individual, shot a final round 73 to tie for 40th at 2-over par. Host Georgia, ranked 30th by GolfStat, finished the 36-hole event 1-under par for a 13-stroke win over the Panthers at 12-over. GRU-Augusta finished third at 16-over, while Lipscomb finished in fourth at 20-over. Youngstown State rounded out the top-five at 24-over. Grey finished one stroke ahead of Western Carolina s J.T. Poston, ranked No. 47 in the country. Lipscomb s Stoney Crouch finished in third at 2-under. A foursome of Bulldogs finished tied for fourth at 1-under including Zach Healy, Ja- mie Lopez Rivarola, Sepp Straka and Nicholas Reach, along with GRU-Augusta s Maverick Antcliff. Panthers Finish 12th at Linger Longer Invitational No. 3 Texas shot a final round 5-under 283 to earn a five stroke win over No. 35 Georgia which finished second. No. 25 Kennesaw State and No. 20 North Carolina tied for third at 17-under, while No. 15 Oklahoma finished fifth at 13-under. Georgia s Lee McCoy, ranked No. 10 in the country, finished the two-day event at 14-under to earn a two stroke win over Texas Beau Hossler, who is ranked No. 11 in the nation. North Carolina s Ben Griffin finished third at 10-under par, followed by Mercer teammates Trey Rule and Emmanuel Koutakis who tied for fourth at 8-under.

4 Grey Finishes Second at Tiger Invitational Led by junior J.J. Grey s second-place finish, Geor- gia State placed third on Tuesday at the Tiger Invitational presented by Jason Dufner. Grey s final round 70 led the Panthers to an even par round of 288, to lead GSU to its second-best finish of the season. Grey led or shared the lead for most of the day before Auburn s Michael Johnson, who is ranked among the top 100 in the country, made four back-nine birdies to finish at 8-under and win the tournament. Grey finished 7-under for the 54-hole event, his best finish of the year. After standing in eighth of 16 teams following the first round, Georgia State put together two of its best rounds of the year to finish only behind No. 8 Auburn and No. 50 Troy. Senior Davin White and sophomore Nathan Mallonee both added rounds of 72 on Tuesday to add to the Panthers final round total. White finished the event at 2-over and tied for 19th, while Mallonee finished 4-over and tied for 25th. Freshman Alexander Herrmann saved his best round for the last day, shooting a 2-over 74 on Tuesday to move into a tie for 50th at 12-over par. Senior Damon Stephenson shot a final round 76 to fin- ish the event 16-over and tied for 69th. Max Herrmann, competing as an individual, shot a final round 2-over 74 to finish the tournament at 2-over and tied for 19th. He has finished in the top 25 in all five tourna- The Georgia State men s golf team opened the spring season with a tie for eighth at the SunTrust Gator Invita- tional, shooting a tournament-best 290 in the final round. Senior Damon Stephenson and freshman Alexander Herrmann led the Panthers in the final round, each shoot- ing 1-over 71s. The Panthers tied with Liberty and finished ahead of No. 34 UAB, College of Charleston, UCF, Jacksonville and Mercer. I was glad to see some better scores today, but unfor- tunately we had a couple of big-numbers that really hurt us, head coach Joe Inman said. If we can eliminate the double and triple bogeys, we have the ability to compete with any- one, but until we do that, it is going to be a struggle. As Inman alluded to, big numbers hurt the Panthers throughout the tournament. On Sunday, Herrmann made three back-nine birdies, but a triple-bogey eight on the par- 5 seventh derailed his round. He finished the tournament tied for 46th at 15-over. Stephenson made a pair of birdies en route to his 1-over round and finished the event tied for 33rd at 10-over. Junior J.J. Grey shot a final round 5-over, 75, to finish the two-day event 10-over and tied with Stephenson for 33rd. Senior Davin White added a 3-over, 73 on Sunday to shoot 12-over, tying for 40th. Sophomore Nathan Mallonee rounded out the Panthers line- ments he has competed in this season. On the heels of a 12-under, 276, No. 8 Auburn ran away with the tournament, winning by 28 strokes over No. 50 Troy. The Tigers finished the 54-hole event at 25-under, while Troy finished 3-over. Georgia State was third followed by Sun Belt rival South Alabama in fourth at 12-over. No. 45 Ole Miss, VCU and Kansas State tied for fifth at 17-over. Auburn s Michael Johnson shot a final round 2-under, 70, to earn the one-stroke win over Grey. The Auburn trio of Ben Schlottman, No. 8 Matt Gilchrest and Will Long tied for third at 6-under. Panthers Open Spring at Gator Invitational up shooting a final round 5-over, 75 to tie for 38th at 11-over. No. 23 South Florida finished at 5-under par, the lone team in the red, to earn an eight-stroke victory over Arkan- sas, which finished at 3-over. No. 3 Florida State finished third at 5-over, followed by host Florida in fourth at 14- over. No. 50 Georgia Southern rounded out the top five. South Florida s Claudio Correa finished at 5-under par to earn low medalist honors. Florida s J.D. Tomlinson and Arkansas Taylor Moore finished tied for second at 3-under, while South Florida s Chase Koepka and Arkansas Kolton Crawford tied for fourth at 2-under.

5 Georgia State shot a final round 14-over 302 to finish 12th at the Jones Invitational at Valencia Country Club. Freshman Alexander Herrmann led Georgia State with a tie for 27th as three Panthers finished among the top 30. Herrmann shot a final-round 5-over 77, which includ- ed four birdies, to finish 6-over for the event. The Panthers finished the 54-hole event at 32-over par, but were within 10 strokes of finishing in the top half of the field. I think everyone on our team would agree that we were disappointed by the result this week, head coach Joe Inman said. We made a ton of birdies, but we also made too many big numbers that we were not able to overcome. We need to figure out how to eliminate those big numbers quickly if we want to reach out goals this season. Senior Damon Stephenson and sophomore Nathan Mallonee each shot 76 on Tuesday to finish tied for 30th at 7-over par. Junior J.J. Grey rebounded from a tough second round to shoot 74 and finished tied for 55th. After missing the second round due to injury, Davin White returned to the line-up and shot a final round 76. Senior Gus Wagoner, competing as an individual, shot a final round 79 to shoot 24-over and finish 77th. Panthers Return to California Southern Cal finished at 14-under par to win the event by 16 strokes over Kennesaw State which finished second at 2-over. Northwestern finished in third at 6-over, followed by Sam Houston State and BYU which tied for fourth at 13-over. Winthrop s Zach Seabolt won a two-hole playoff over USC s Sean Crocker to earn low medalist honors at 8-under par. Kennesaw State s Teremoana Beaucousin finished third at 7-under, followed by USC s Rico Hoey in fourth at 3-un- der. Grey Named Sun Belt Golfer of the Month for March Coming off a spectacular month of golf, Georgia State junior J.J. Grey has been named the Sun Belt Conference Golfer of the Month for March as announced by the confer- ence office. Grey led the Panthers with three top-two finishes in four tournaments during the month. He won the presti- gious Southern Intercollegiate, while finishing second at the Tiger Invitational presented by Jason Dufner and the Furman Intercollegiate this past weekend. He also tied for 30th at the Linger Longer Invitational which featured seven teams ranked in the top 35. He opened the month shooting at the Tiger Invitational, leading Georgia State to a third-place finish, only behind top 10 Auburn and top 50 Troy.
