could exhort TWELVE OF TWELVE hundred: ana:/ toiiv " Twelve of our best," they sad. And responsblty of choce lay heavy upon me, for the pen was free to travel where t would. When one s off one's game there s no " best." And when one s tgershly on t the course that has been kndly Is supreme : for of such susceptblty s the wayward golfer. Yet these twelve stand ndubtably for Qualty among the myrad farways of Brtan. They have been chosen for ther charm, and for the golfmg hstory that looms ever n ther backgrounds. Wherefore, of apology n choce, en >ugh. Insstent and envous s the thought of the lucky man who may be about to adventure upon them. For hs wll be halcyon days. I pcture hm as one who comes from overseas, eager but unversed. And mentally I hm, thus: " Do not be embarrassed by the great names these Twelve bear. The better the course the more effcent wll be your partcular game for ths s an axom of golfng fath. And havng acqutted yourself reasonably well upon any one, the mental exhlaraton thereafter wll be marked, lastng and justfed." I wsh that I for the nonce change places wth the vstor to England, who s bound upon a Brtsh golf adventure. For the joys that wll be hs could be mne n all ther freshness of delght. Hs wll be the alertness of expectaton when hs tax slps wth hm through the maelstrom of traffc towards Euston as the London lghts come on. The aloofness and slght furtveness of Euston wll qucken hs sense of the mystery of the nght that les ahead. And there wll stand the shrouded sleepers, somnolent even before dnner. He wll dne tranqully, as the lesured darkness purrs past the wndows. Batteres of eyes wll flash from undecphered towns as the huge tran swshes past them. Presently there wll be a snck of closed bedroom door and a drftng towards oblvon, the ceaseless throb of moton growng fanter P A G E 3

The flck of door agan and a tankle of tea cup : a splash of sunlght : a stretch of sparklng sea. Scotland Wth a golf course rushng by.' : a red flag sgnallng on a green augury of arrval n the land of frendly farways. A perfect mornng contemplaton. Maybe t wll be Ireland and a lght-hearted caddy who wll prase the Dety when a long putt s holed. Or the merry men of the Mdlands, who wll take hm fraternally nto ther foursomes and ther hearts. But come what may to hs card In whchever place, he wll be the better golfer for the experences these qualty courses gve hm. And when the speedng days have vanshed, he wll at least have done hs best upon twelve of the best ; and the memores of ther subtletes and fascnatons wll reman wth hm always. D. 9 have am GLENEAGLES It was 1 who was responsble orgnally, when wrtng of the Gleneagles golf courses In a London weekly paper, for the somewhat bold descrpton of ths place as " the Eghth Wonder " of the golfng world. That was before the hotel had blossomed nto full bloom, when they were movng n the furnture, and when the Queen's Course had only nne holes open for play, nstead of the eghteen beautes of to-day. But I have just been up there agan many years later. I do not wsh to retract one syllable of the sweepng statement. Indeed I glad I made t. For t s apt. Happly t has been endorsed snce by thousands of people who have been there. Moreover, I spoken snce then to many professonal golfers about the courses at Gleneagles, and they nearly all agree wth me that the Kng's Course, and n a mnor degree the Queen's (and only that because t s shorter) can be classfed qute truthfully as some of the fnest nland golf n the world. I know that the enthusasm of novces sometmes causes them to take the bt between ther teeth and bolt. They fnd themselves n some golfng endrot where they happen, fortutously perhaps, but none the less delcously, upon a

have GLENEAGLES good day's play ; consequently, the golf s "superb." But one hundred and thrty-three dfferent golf courses about the world have defeated me at varous tmes, and so I grown out of most of my llusons, seeng no longer through a glass darkly, but very much face to face. And I stll say that, go where you wll about Brtan, you wll be very hard put to t to fmd nland golf that wll gve you more all-round keen enjoyment than s provded by ths ralway stronghold of golf n Perthshre. There can be no better method for a wrter to employ to hs reader than a rectal of actual facts as they happened to hm. And ths s what happened to and was observed by me durng a summer nght and a summer day of last year. sleeper slpped out of Euston wth us. The The glare and racket of London was left behnd. We were carred somnolently northward. Four men wth golf clubs were n my coach. Ther luggage was labelled Gleneagles. Ther speech was labelled Amercan. Ther dalogue showed that ths was for them a plgrmage to the unknown ; and speculaton and trepdaton were rfe n ther conversaton. You can often tell by a glance at a man's golf bag what calbre of player he s. Ths was an experenced quartette a travelled ; they could separate the wheat from the chaff of farways. And I watched them closely but dscreetly next mornng a.m. ; and the sun smled on Perthshre. And the larks sang. And the trm Gleneagles staton was gay wth flowers. And there was the Scottsh " tang " n the ar. And the dove-grey Colossus of the hotel rsng on the skylne, towards whch, and a whte-tled bathroom and a kdney and bacon breakfast, the brown Gleneagles 'bus pulsed wth us. They dd not speak to me or to each other. They Just looked. And went on lookng. At the most vvd green n all the world the green of freshly mown grass on farways. You see a tee : a great, wde, lovely tee, and an open sweep of velvety grass receptve to the drver ; a plateau green rased hgh for the recept of your second shot, a multtude of lttle red and whte flags flutterng coyly and that s the Kng's, wth the Queen's n dutful attendance on her lord. Avery regal sght the two of them are, stretchng away and away nto the foothlls, wth the mult-coloured mountans as ther shelterng background. Subsequently, I saw the Amercans only at ntervals. Four beautful drves they had, after breakfast, on the Kng's frst tee ; and then 1 went to pay homage to the Queen, for I love her so. Agan after tea they were at play, enthusastcally, on the " Wee Course," (nne holes), payng t adjectval complments. And agan

can GLENEAGLES n the Amercan Bar we met durng the blssful hour of the cocktal. To one of them I sad : "Well, what do you thnk of t? " And four of them repled smultaneously. What they sad would make even a Kng blush and a Queen turn her face away n embarrassed gratfcaton. Never had they seen anythng lke t. Well, who has? There s nothng odd about that. But one lkes to feel that Brtan can sometmes produce a sumptuous and nmtable dsh for the golfng gourmet from abroad, who partakes as a connosseur should, and as those four dd throughout a successon of joyful golfng days. Three thngs have, I thnk, contrbuted most promnently to the composton of ths deal holday place : Nature, Great Skll, and not a lttle Darng, whch generally goes wth hgh-grade skll ; and Patence. Nature has smled most gracously and sweetly upon Gleneagles. On a clear day from your bedroom wndow, sxty or seventy mles of grand Hghland country stretches away and away. The Heghts of Ben Vorch to your left, the Grampans to your rght, and, all about, a pageantry of panoramc lovelness. Great sweeps of mysterous moor, huge splashes of maroon heather, stans of olve-green furze ; and broodng over all, behnd and before, the exquste greyblue mountans. I magne nothng anywhere more revvfyng to the flaccd townsman and the traveller than that frst gaze through the upflung bedroom wndow on a sunny mornng at Gleneagles. Ten years seem clpped off the sumtotal of your age at the sght and sound and smell of t It s not my purpose to descrbe the golf n detal. Other and more able pens have bruted t abroad. I am content merely to touch lghtly here and there upon a phase or two of ths very remarkable organsaton. Two courses lyng sde by sde, and not one of the thrty-sx holes fantly resemblng another. all. Each hole, n my humble judgment, represents as nearly perfect an nland golf hole as the most exactng Natonal Handcap man can reasonably wsh for. There are dffcultes where dffcultes should le. There s the glorous reward for the well-played shot. There s the restranng nfluence, by cannly conceved green and furtve bunker, upon hm who by untoward good play, becomes proud and of a hgh stomach about hmself. There are velvet greens on plateaux and n dells, undulatng and wckedly deceptve or blssfully flat, as the mood of Jmmy Brad took hm at the moment of plannng. There are naughty lttle short holes that are not such fools as they look. There are long lean-farwayed fellows, wth bogeys, whch on a good day you swear are easy, and whch on a bad you feel you wll never reach under sx. Over and about them all stretches the turf of

CLENEAGLES Kng's on the senor course and the turf of drver-beckonng substance on the Queen's. At no tme are you harred and bothered by players of contguous holes. One of the most arrestng features of these two courses, s that each hole seems to le all by tself, hdden away from Its fellows, There s peace of land and quetness of manknd wherever you take up a thoughtful stance. And over all, permeatng the place, forcng tself nsstently upon the most pagan of men, are the thousand and one lghts and shades and myrad colourngs and contortons of a gorgeous landscape that has no equal of ts knd In all the grandeur of Scotland. And on no two consecutve days are the vews the same. To-day there s a glory of kaledoscopc vsblty where to-morrow there wll be wrath-lke mst. To-morrow fresh delghts wll open out of the mddle dstance and the beyond whch for days have been veled n an mpenetrable haze. Not content wth two superlatvely good courses, lad out by master hands and mantaned by hgh-grade effcency, they must needs buld yet another, and they allow Gordon Lockhart, ther popular professonal and ex-amateur champon of Scotland, to do t. You know how t s when you are told, that f you don't want to play on the " bg " course, wherever t s you may be, there s a small nne-hole course adjacent. Instantly you have a vson, bred of btter experence,

have GLENEAGLES of some nondescrpt place for novces and cjlldren, and If you are a mature golfer you edge away from ths suspcously. So, when they told me there was what they call the " Wee Course " at Gleneagles, I sad, " Oh, yes, I daresay ; I know what that means." I ddn't. I had no dea t was possble to make what they have made here on land they had, as t were, " on hand." What they have actually done, s to construct a nne-hole course, whch s, as far as ths errant golfer s concerned anyway, the best short course n Great Brtan. 2,625 yards n length, abomnably trcky, reekng wth subtelty, lovely of aspect and as good as gold. For an after-tea course, or, more partcularly, for a shade of odds gamble wth an opponent, no man can wsh for anythng better. Summarsed, t s n qualty up to the standard of the Kng's and Queen's. In artfce and gule, t s Machavellan n manner. In fascnaton t Is truly femnne, and no man need say more. One cannot wrte about Gleneagles wthout gvng one's vews upon the hotel that has made the courses possble for, at any rate, all Englsh folk. Frankly, and I hope I may be acqutted of any arrere pensee, for ndeed I none, t s to my mnd the most beautful and most comfortable hotel n Europe, and t has been my lot to stay n more hotels, perhaps, than the average man. It s of a sumptgousness that, unlke so many others, s not garsh. Extreme good taste of the prncely knd prevals everywhere. The most pronounced sybarte can surely have no crtcsm as to ts appontments and the creature comforts that are everywhere to hs hand. It s unlke any other hotel you have ever stayed n. And s not that a blessng n tself? Electrc fres greet you n every corrdor. Bolng water wll flow all nght n your bedroom f you want t. There s a luxurous swmmng pool ; a garage for over a hundred cars ; there are croquet lawns that Roehampton members are qute glad to play on ; nne hard tenns courts that the wzards do n fact play on when they have completed ther world wzardry at Wmbledon ; two perfect ballrooms ; a hardresser's and sundry other shops ; a post offce ; a bank. In fact, there s everythng... Gleneagles s a very wonderful place. I have heard t descrbed as " the sportsman's Elysum." And so t s. I leave t, regretfully as usual, but wth a certan scene last September stamped ndelbly on my mnd. A day and a nght. I was alone, you understand, hoverng (austerely, because I was playng " needle " golf each day) upon the brnk of gaety that was pulsng hereabouts nsstently, and nto the vortex of whch

GLENEAGLES fngers, male and female, contnued to beckon me, for many of the gay crowd I knew. The mornng dawned mstly, velng the mountans as wth gauze, but a pale golden lght began to spread over the farways the sun was comng soon : meanwhle the tracks of gardeners' feet were marked clearly on the rme-covered lawns. A man arrved at the bedroom door pushng a trolley laden wth the best of breakfasts, and whle thus employed at the wde open wndow, the beautes of Perthshre were revealed slowly to a keen golfer's gaze.... Two of a temperament and Identcal handcaps, strangers, but yesterday. quarter asked or gven, for each was an unknown quantty. And every hole a joy to play : each stroke our best. Meanwhle the sun bathed the world n brllance, and the larks sang on hgh. A cock pheasant chuckled throatlly from a covert at the fluke of long putts : and the Kng's Course held us n thrall as we battled slently and serene. Al square. A day of days.... No The Queen's n the rch glory of the autumn afternoon : and agan the tenseness and delght of golfmg battle, wth vctory hangng by the thread of one putt. Tea. And a gamble on the " Wee Course " thereafter. Fve bob a hole and all sde bets to caddes who had been valant servtors. They were enrched, and deservedly. But the evenng was at hand, purplng the mountans ; and the sky on ther edges became the colour of dry Martns sgnfcant remnder. Sleek cars were now purrng up the hll In a glstenng cavalcade. The gay, and lovely, world was returnng from the Perth Meetng. Arthur n the Amercan Bar must be busy let us nvestgate... Tweeds and Tes and gusts of laughter : a Klt or two : courteous overcrowdng : a temperature of gala, rsng steadly. A whte-tled bathroom after two and a half rounds s a place of delcous dallance, steamly reflectve. Cocktal partes avalable presently n four sttngrooms whch?... The dnng-room a blaze of slky colours. Famous and lovely faces attract the eye magnetcally. A host, speakng wth authorty, affrms that " a spot " of champagne n turtle soup mproves t " no end " and who are we to gansay hm? Saxophones croon n glowng dstances. Bllard balls clck crsply under arcs of ce-whte lght. There s a thrpp... thrpp of cards n corners of concentraton. Suave slences are broken by staccato nqury, " Havng no heart, partner "?... The Gleneagles nght has come nto ts own. 10

I came wrte, /'^ ROYAL DORNOCH back to ths beloved place after eght years' absence : and please beleve me when I that the old thrll of arrval was In no way lessened, though many other fascnatng places had supervened meanwhle. The journey to ths lttle cache In remote Sutherlandshre, Is a plgrmage of pleasure every tme you embark upon t. There s frst of all the joyous awakenng n the Inverness Sleeper to look out upon the panorama of lovelness of loch and crag and sunsplashed streams, as you le luxurously, the early mornng tea and frst cgarette at your sde. The lesurely dressng whle the tran clmbs up the mountan pass between Dalnaspldal and Dalwhnne. The excellent breakfast n the Dnng Car after Kngusse ; the change and stretch of leg at Inverness n the keen mornng ar. On, presently, n the lttle Thurso tran ; along the edge of the beautful Cromarty Frth, n whch sometmes les at anchor off Invergordon the mght, majesty and domnon of the Altantc Fleet. The comng of the tran s an event of magntude at all the lttle statons. Look up from your novel when the brakes come on and observe the scenes on the platforms. Klts : II

can ROTAL DORNOCH tweeds : glles : a twenty-pound salmon, damp n sackng : gun cases : rods n long boxes : provsons from " toon " : bronzed faces : Gaelc accent : hardy men : sturdy women the Hghlands, wth the beautful grandose scenery as a perpetual background. I never read or doze durng that unforgettable mornng journey : I can but stare, enchanted, my sprts rsng wth the knowledge that the golfng goal s now so near. And then the last lap, from a staton'called " The Mound," n another even smaller tran, round the bay, wth the smle of the sea on the dmpled face of the sands. The arrval at the lttle termnus, Dornoch, sx hundred and thrty-sx mles from Euston, and thank heaven for the small mercy of that fact! You must approach the Royal Dornoch Golf Club n a sprt of respect. A grave dgnty s the men of these lnks, for they are very old. Sr Robert Gordon, n hs " Earldom of Sutherland," wrtes In 1630 " : About ths toun ther are the farest and largest llnkes of any part of Scotland, fltt for archery, goftng, rydng, and all other exercse ; they doe surpasse the felds of Montrose or St. Andrews." We need not rase a cloud of controversy at a comparson of these lnks wth St. Andrews'. That s not the pont. The pont s, that men were playng on them n 160, as the archves of Dunrobn Castle show, and they have been dong so ever snce. It s enough. J^Age and the benedcton of kndly nature have mellowed them, and they are much as they then were ; reverently and wth a great contentment. and we play over them There are no fmer greens n Scotland. A bold statement, but made by one who has putted on nearly all the famous Scottsh greens, and on very many others. It s not surprsng. Bathed n the mountan dews of the neffably lovely dawns, salted wth the spume of the North Sea waters, and tended by wse men whose great-grandfathers cared for them as lovngly n ther tme, they are now and wll always be " a thng of beauty and a joy for ever." But t s not only to the greens I that one pays homage. Frankly, I do not know what t s. One cannot say n bald words that the lnks are defntely ths, that, or the other thng, nevertheless there wll be a vehement desre to play over them agan, and yet agan, and then once more. Holes there are, I suppose, whch your steady scratch player mght, wth some justce, be allowed to crtcse. He may say that the fourteenth, ffteenth and 12

know ROYAL DORNOCH sxteenth on the low ground on the Rogart sde are lackng n character. If he does t s because the other ffteen have forced ther personalty upon hm. Certanly the frst sx holes are among the fnest n ths land of fne lnks. Personally, I love them all. Another reason why the atmosphere of Royal Dornoch charms the vstor s hs welcome, and the treatment meted out to hm whle there. Although knockng at the doors of one of the strongholds of the game, they are flung wde n welcome. You and I places where the chlly greetng s no greetng at all. Furthermore, there s In the holday months at Dornoch a lengthy ballot for play n the mornng hours. Ths ballot s scrupulously far, and under the ron hand daly of a member of the Commttee. To the comparatvely poor man there are few thngs more gallng n golf than to observe the plutocrat, who only arrved the day before, gong off the frst tee jauntly at 10., whle your tme, a vstor for some weeks, s We all know how ths s done. It s not done here. As well mght you cry for the moon as for a " wangled " tme at Dornoch. 13

ROYAL DORNOCH Hther come, year after year, the same golfng, bathng, motorng, and general holday folk. Why do they come? For a varety of reasons compressed, I thnk, Into one word : ATMOSPHERE. Is t the stad smplcty of the tny Cathedral town? Is It the scenery and the lghts and shades of t that pass kaledoscopcally across the face of ths far land? Is t the kndly natve people s t all three? I do not know. Every vstor wll carry away wth hm at least one vvd pcture of hs holday here to browse upon mentally before hs wnter fre. I have one a curous one. It Is of the two mnutes' stroll down through the hotel garden, through two lttle wcket gates ; of the short stretch of grass up to the sgn-post " To the frst Tee " by the wre fence, placed to catch the pulled drve. The least nterestng scencally of all the vews but t just stcks ; and I hope t always wll. Some people, not obsessed by golf, hold qute other scenes n ther mnds. To them the beautes of the place le not merely on the golf course but n the country all about. Here I my thoughts turn to two exquste places : Fary Glen near Spnnngway. And I am wth them : ther enthusasm s mne. Instantly would the Salmon Leap at Invershn, and the beg all golfers, however vrulent ther fever for the game, to forsake t on at least two afternoons and go to both the above. They wll be very glad that they dd. I cannot descrbe them adequately. No pen can. They must be seen to be beleved. Both are unque n dramatc lovelness. In fact, I am not at all sure that those fellow vstors of mne who never smte the golf ball for weeks on end here are not havng a better holday than I am! For to them each summer day a new scenc beauty s exposed. They, therefore, have an unalloyed enjoyment of an nfnte varety ; whereas I, who have developed a hook on the tee, or am smotherng my ron shots.... But whether t be golf or country exploraton we all wear tweeds. So, from Dornoch, we can take away a tangble memento. There are a couple of lttle shops here n the tny town n whch I nvarably commt wld extravagance. One must have a sut length of ths and that and that. So very cheap too : and t seems to last for ever, mprovng n appearance wth age. A word as to the hotel. We all have our pet places, and that, I hope, wll clear me of the stgma of a horrble thng called " puff." Put brefly, ths brght, ptch-pne panelled endrot becomes for the nonce your home. Ths because 14

ROYAL DORNOCH through t and over t and behnd t runs the machnery of management so slently that there appears to be no management at all. Because heren you can lve to the full v/hatever mode of lfe tempts you. You can make merry f the sprt moves you wth fellow consprators of your own ndefatgable age, provded they have accepted you as a reasonably decent sort of fellow and have taken you to ther bosom accordngly. You can st n deep leather chars, pckng over In talk the flotsam and jetsam of lfe wth moderate-voced men who, lke yourself perhaps, have crossed the rubcon of the gambol. You can, f of them, jon the knttng mothers on snug sofas n corners (out of the Imagnary draught) and endeavour to learn wth them the very tolerance they are tryng to teach ther wayward chldren.... In fact, there s nothng you cannot do here, happly and n that extreme of comfort v^hch does not obtrude tself upon the apprecaton, but just s. And when, wth the sudden chll of a Hghland nght, some thoughtful Scotch soul, unasked, puts a hot-water bottle In your bed, t s the more snug and comfortable for that reason, and also because of the blssful day that has slpped by, and the others that are to come.... TWELVE OF THE BEST ON THE LMS 15

NAIRN Narn s one of the comparatvely new courses. New, that s to say, as golf courses go n ths part of the world. Founded In 87, by Lord Fnlay and Lord Trevethyn, and lad out by dear old Tom Morrs, t was very much mproved subsequently by James Brad, who altered seven of the holes. It s a flat course, except for the rse to the thrteenth, and the rse here s only for the approach shot. Although many seasde courses n Scotland are equally flat, I fnd that I get less tred on ths than on any other n the country. I thnk the reason s that the subsol s very lght sand, wth a pecularly sprngy qualty of turf on top. Ths qualty of sub-sol has another tremendous advantage for the holday golfer. It can ran here wthout ceasng for twenty-four hours, and an hour after that, as far as these lnks are concerned, t mght not have raned at all. But as Narn has the lowest recorded ranfall n Scotland the contngency referred to does not often happen. It s very odd about the ran here. I have often stood upon the tees, lookng across the lovely Moray Frth at ts hlls blanketed by ran, and yet we have not had one drop at Narn. A pecularly dry

NAIRN belt s ths strp of coast ; so much so that the greens at tmes used to have a tendency to become much burned and nfernally slppery n consequence. But they have now lad water to every green, v/hch wll therefore reman vvdly the rght colour durng any spell of drought. I cannot understand why more people do not come here durng the wnter months. We, down south, speak wth a shver about " gong over the Grampans," gnorng the fact that ths s done n a comfortable steam-heated ralway carrage ; and forgettng that, after surmountng the Grampans, you drop down the other sde nto a warm valley wheren Narn les. The pecular geographcal stuaton of the place s such that although an east coast town of Scotland the temperature s very mld. They seldom get snow. It s certanly one of the best wnter courses n Great Brtan. Very often durng the dread month of February the mean temperature here s hgher than at San Remo, for example. It s essentally a place for those who want to avod the cold February and March wnds. In summer one of ts chef charms s ts colourng. It s the bluest place I know. Every shade of blue can be seen on ths golf course, from the deep Medterranean blue of the sea to the palest of blues at the base of the dstant Moray hlls : and the colourngs on the course tself are really remarkable. There s one hole n partcular the fourteenth ; much admred by the Prnce of Wales when he played here where, on a crowded summer mornng, you often have to wat untl they are off the green ahead. So you st on the emnence of the tee, lookng out to sea. Immedately below you s a great mass of purple heather, jade green grass and blue sea ; and beyond, the slver-grey shps of Hs Majesty's Fleet, creepng n through the Sutors to ther base at Invergordon. It s a very lovely sght ; and the rrtaton at watng on a tee s, or should be, appeased because of It. The golf, as s wdely known, s of the best ; superlatvely so to the Londonder admtted as a rght of brth by the Scot. We all have our favourte holes on loved courses. Here s one that, to use the vernacular, wants a lot of beatng the fourth, 166 yards. Hereat I have been too strong wth a jgger and too short wth a mashe, and never, I am ashamed to say, have I done t n the requste three. It s one of " the demon shorts." Your tee, by the way, has a background of burnt orange and mauve gorse an asde, but too charmng to gnore. To your left, a 17

NAIRN hundred yards away, the sea croons a song to the stll summer mornng. A ferocous bunker s " watn' on ye," as the cadde says, f you pull. If you slce there s the rough stuff and every form and undulaton of nastness all ready for t. There s n fact very defnte trouble all the way between tee and green, whch s as t should be at all short holes. Wherefore t s a most satsfactory thng to lay your ball " dead " for a two ; for then you feel that you have played an excellent short hole even better. The ffth tee at Narn, whle occuped by watng players n the late afternoon when the lght s hardenng, always remnds me of the posters you gaze at avdly on a foggy wnter mornng on staton platforms and hoardngs n the south. Don't you know the mmaculate gentleman takng a superb swng on a tee that s beng almost splashed by the waves, apparently havng drven a tgersh ball through a green that s all gold and blue and beautful, wth a lttle provocatve lemoncoloured bunker n the mddle dstance? " Horrbly exaggerated," you mumble In an envous voce. But you can see all ths at Narn, ncludng the almghty swng, and plenty of lemon-coloured bunkers. The nnth hole s known as the " Icehouse," because there s n fact an ce house hard by n whch the local fshermen store the salmon netted from the

NAIRN Frth. It was hereabouts, upon a day, that I dscovered the reason of my cadde's markedly lght-hearted manner. He confded to me that n the early mornng of yesterday he had " come upon " (poached s the correct word) a 24-pound salmon, marooned In a pool of the rver from whch the water had mostly gone. That he had sold t n the town for and lfe was very good. Lfe was not so good on a day durng the followng week, however, for, I ascertaned, he had just been fned for poachng a ten-pounder. But, as he sad, he was " up on the deal " so far. Ths s not golf ; yet the subject of salmon s n no wse napt heren, for the hotels at Narn wll gve you slces of a perfect fsh that was fghtng for ts lfe n the rver here only a few hours before t s brought to the table. Those who have eaten local salmon n Scotland wll apprecate the pont. TWELVE OF THE BEST ON THE LMS \

TURNBERRY The Ayrshre coast s alve wth golf courses world-renowned places such as Prestwck, Troon, Gales, Barasse and Turnberry. They le hereabouts, sem- Ingly an unendng vsta of lovelness to the keen golfng eye. It must be an unque experence for an Amercan as It s ndeed for all Englshmen who love the game to travel along the coast n a tran from Glasgow on a summer day and just look out of the carrage wndow for an hour. Durng ths tme he wll be gazng upon perfect golfng terran : upon some of the very best golf n the world. And not only s the ground so good, but the condton of the courses, from the pont of vew of upkeep, s superb. Here the pen stops, and the traned mnd says, "Avod panegyrcs." Butyoucan't. Golf s your favourte game ; you play It reasonably well ; t means so much to you ; and here s some of the cream of t ; some of the farways, lyng wde and beautful before your absorbed eyes, that men have plgrmaged from the farthest corners of the globe to replace ther dvots upon. Therefore, n ths case only superlatves wll suffce ; and they are justfed. The opnon of the experenced golfng world has confrmed ths many tmes. You cannot get better golf anywhere than n Ayrshre. It s golf of great age, and great charm, tremendous atmosphere and dgnty. Stay at Turnberry for 20

TURNBERRY a spell of days and wallow n t. There s no better word for ths sort of holday than a golfng " wallow." At Prestwck and Troon, the holocaust of world champons, you must act crcumspectly and dplomatcally. They are both Scottsh strongholds of the game n the strct sense of the term, and one must say " May I play here? " rather than " I wll play." One must approach these places, as one should, as t were cap n hand. But there are no more charmng hosts In all the world of hosptalty than the Scottsh when once a stranger has perced, by hs own decency of behavour, the armour of ther natonal reserve. I have arrved alone and unknown at all these portentous places, seekng games, and never have I been turned empty away nor wll you. The best method of approach for a stranger n the land s to get a letter of ntroducton from a Scottsh frend to all these courses t wll be gven readly and they are then your home for as long as you can spare the tme to enjoy them. Forget them you never wll. Untl you have played upon them you cannot say wth truth that you have experenced the fnest courses n Brtan. At Turnberry, of course, no such ntroducton s necessary. It s a ralway stronghold, as s Gleneagles ; and the two Turnberry courses are as much yours as s your extremely comfortable bedroom. It s a smpler lfe than Gleneagles : thngs are on a smaller and more economcal scale here. It s nevertheless supercomfortable, a coned word but an apt. If I had my way wth a golfng frend ndeed, t s a thng I have always wanted to do ever snce frst I became acquanted wth ths country I should brng hm up here (he never havng been before) by nght. I should tell hm nothng about t. To hs questons I should merely reply "Wat and see." I should bundle hm out of the tran at Turnberry, walk hm down the covered passage to the back part of the hotel, whch adjons the staton, shoot hm quckly up n the lft to hs bedroom and whte-tled bathroom, lead hm to the wndow, and say " There! " What a spectacle that s on a summer mornng! A wde stretch of vvd green : a stretch of bscut brown ; an llmtable plan of pale blue beyond. On the green part flutter flags. Lttle ant-lke men are movng ; you hear a fant " purr " of sound from below ; that blssful nose of grass mowng so long as some other fellow s dong t. On the bscut-coloured sands move bathers. 21

would know, TURNBERRY And on the pale blue floor of the sea the sun has strewn ts sparklng jewels of lght. Havng lstened wth satsfacton to hs paean of prase and wonderment, 1 would take hm down to an enormous Scotch breakfast, before wde-flung wndows, commencng wth a lttle Scotch herrng that was n ths very sea only yesterday. I would try to prevent hm dashng down those one hundred and nne steps to the frst tee (or s the number? one hundred and seven these steps never seem to be the same number day by day ; and be careful, because men wll want to bet wth you about ths) drectly after breakfast. I should probably fal n ths. You have to be very strongmnded to prevent a man playng at Turnberry the moment he sees the golf lnks. But I lke to use Turnberry as our base, gong from there each day to Prestwck, Troon, Gales and Barasse, returnng, sated, to ths haven of an hotel n the evenng, and sttng on one of the whte garden seats after dnner, reflectng on the golfng glores of the day just endng. Then, when we had been totally defeated by them all but at the hands of such doughty opponents that there would be no shame n our hearts, only deep apprecaton and humlty we would devote ourselves to Turnberry's two lovely courses ; and our game would have been markedly mproved, snce we had been through the fre of ferocous farways on those others. By that tme, of course, we should have become thoroughly " played n." We should fear nothng very Danels of the drver come to judgment. Wherefore we should proceed frst to deal wth the course known as " No. 2 lyng nland alongsde part of " No. 1." A much fercer test of golf than No. 1. The course for the long htter, wth a stff bogey ; the place for the " full bang wth a brasse " and then some more ; a land on whch you can take no lbertes, whereon you have got to play all the shots n the bag and play them well, or the card wll perforce be torn up long before the end. Here you wll realse, perhaps, the joy of havng a long handcap. The lower your handcap the less margn Is there for error a plattude, I but nstructvely apparent on ths No. 2 course, and so I emphasse t. If you are, say 6 of a handcap, take a card out on No. 2 and see how very dffcult t wll be to play down to t. But f you do, you are a proud man and can tell of t before the world 22

TURNBERRY In the Amercan Bar thereafter, and men wll, or they should, pay homage n prescrbed manner by sayng " do ths agan " to the barman. the Then the sesta after lunch. Only the nsatable gourmet for golf goes down those three hundred and ffty-sx steps mmedately after a Turnberry table d'hote ; and, anyway, he does not go wth me. No, I am all for a deck char on the sunny emnence of the hotel lawn after lunch, lookng down upon mnature men experencng ther great and endurng travals untl four o'clock ; when I grd up my lons wth lashngs of tea and descend avdly upon Course No. 1 n the lovely lght of the Scottsh evenng. Some people, at the menton of Turnberry, begn to talk about blnd holes, crtcsng the golf on No. 1, because there are eght of them n the round. But these crtcs are usually Scotsmen, possessng handcaps of sngle fgures, and, as s well known, these men are n the habt of playng upon courses whch to the average Englshman are as near Elysum as he ever expects to reach n hs golfng career. The le of the land at Turnberry s such that no machnatons of man could usefully alter the contours and undulatons whch, from a landscape pont of.«. ILL ft I ««23

was TURNBERRT vew, are of a grandeur truly Scottsh ; and I personally do not thnk t matters n the least that you cannot see from eght of the tees the flag flutterng on the greens. There are two holes at least here whch add a dstnct pquancy to one's play from the very fact that they ore blnd ; namely, the fourth and seventh. The fourth, a fve hole, 410 yards. You play over a hll. If the hll were not there the hole would lose ts Interest. The seventh, stone blnd, s to my mnd the best on the course, 220 yards, a four, played over another hllock on to a perfect punch-bowl green. Another excellent one s the nnth, the lghthouse hole, 285 yards, the sea and the lghthouse to your mmedate left. Your drecton post for the drve s set n a carn of rocks, markng the spot where the frends of Robert Bruce lt the fre as a sgnal to hm to come out of hs hdng on the Isle of Arran opposte and recapture hs castle. My cadde told me ths the frst tme I played here, and I so thrlled by t that I drove onto the very rock and rchocheted away nto oblvon. Another hole well worthy of comment, s the eleventh ("John o' Groat's "). A real beauty, ths, 325 yards. They expect you to do t n four. If you do you wll be, very pleased wth yourself. Another, the seventeenth, 460 ; blnd, but t does not matter. Two good bangs wth the wood, a chp up the hll, to a plateau green, and down n a useful fve. The eghteenth s remarkable for ts green. Manufactured out of a waste of flat sand by Messrs. Carter, of seed fame, at a cost of 600, t s a perfect example of golf artfcalty. Surroundng bunkers such as you see n plaster-of-pars models of golf courses altogether a fne nstance of what can be done wth the rght seed and the rght knd of golf archtecture. Gaunt Scotsmen, sufferng from Natonal Handcaps, have told me that the bogey of 80 for Turnberry's No. 1 Course s " easy." All I can say to ths s, that when an Englshman or an Amercan gets an 80 here (especally f there s a nce sea breeze blowng), he chatters about t for qute a long tme or, at least, he wants to, f hs frends wll let hm. And after the delcous Turnberry golfng day s over, then the swm n the salt-water pool n the hotel after the cocktal or two. The clmb nto the crsp dress shrt ; dnner ; dance ; the lades ; brdge ; bllards to some ndefatgables all fve. Bed wth a jocular-lookng moon 24

TURNBERRT hangng leerngly over the lp-lappng waters the nstant sleep, bred of hard physcal exercse, salt-laden breezes, and a great contentment wth the lfe of the moment ; and the knowledge that there s to be a to-morrow of ths perhaps a successon of days of t gorgeous! A busness man summed up ths holday resort to me aptly one nght as they were passng round the port, when he sad : " By Jove, I should lke to have some shares n a syndcate that owned ths hotel, ths countrysde, and these beautful golf courses wthn seventy mles of London. We could charge a thrty-gunea entrance fee and ffteen guneas a year subscrpton. We should have a watng lst as long as your arm, and everyone tryng to wangle hs pal nto membershp n front of the other fellow...." He was perfectly rght. I should certanly try to do ths myself. So many people would urge me towards the msdemeanour. TWELVE OF THE BEST ON THE LMS 25

TROON Lke many other places on the Scottsh coast, Troon s, as a man descrbed t once, " crawlng wth golf courses." There are no less than fve exceedngly good eghteen-hole courses here three muncpal courses, the Old Club, and the New (Portland) Course. All the muncpal courses are open to the whole world of golfers. Courses 1 and 2 for " all players," 2s. 6d. a day, and a yearly tcket for 27s. 6d. Course No. 3, for lades only (ths s much apprecated n such a golfng stronghold where lades requre an ron nerve as well as consstently good ron shots to mngle n the game wth low handcap men), 20s. a year only, and 1s. 6d. a day. On ths course also boys and grls under sxteen may play (excluded from the Club House) for 10s. a year and 1s. a day. There s no entrance fee to any of these publc courses, and no need of an ntroducton. As s the case on the two bg lnks, the puttng greens are perfect, and, generally speakng, the les are excellent. Good natural and artfcal bunkers gve all these courses a sportng character. From varous ponts upon most of them you get magnfcent vews of the Isle of Arran and the Frth of Clyde ; and the ar s so bracng that you can play three rounds n the day wthout feelng you have overdone t. 26

. TROON It s, however, to the Old Course of the Troon Golf Club that one's thoughts naturally turn. Founded n 78, It has been famous for longer than many of us care to remember, but It became world-famous In 123. Used for the qualfyng rounds before that, the professonals from al over Brtan were so struck by ts character that t was decded to confer upon t the honour of the Open Champonshp ; and for ths purpose James Brad descended upon t and put n sxty new bunkers wth hs usual craftness. Lke certan others of these wonderful Scottsh lnks, to the unntated t looks qute easy from the seashore, from the passng tran on the left edge or from the Club House wndows. Indeed, when you take up your poston on the frst tee, under those starng wndows, and n full vew of all the people leanng dly on the ralngs behnd, your nervousness s somewhat allayed by the vew ahead of your drve. Wde, sweepng turf, crsp to the brasse, stretches away n front ; a small bunker or two apparently but you won't go near those plenty of room, and the flag flutterng nvtngly beyond. That, of course s where the catch s. Mss your drve, and you gve yourself an rrtatngly dffcult second two grnnng bunkers to the left, and some terrbly clngng rough to your rght. Also you had not notced, beng a bt rattled at the start, that the wnd s blowng a healthy half-gale from the sea, nor that your canny Scotch opponent has played hs frst two shots rght nto t. You do observe, however, that he s lyng ncely on the edge of the green for a four because of ths fact ; whereas you.. The wnd at Troon has to be taken very much nto your calculatons. The wobbly ten handcap player fnds the wnd element a dffcult proposton at all tmes. But the seasoned players here know just how to cope wth t, and cope wth t scentfcally and darngly they must f a respectable score s to be returned. The elements tend to defeat Londoners usually on golf courses, but the Scottsh folk seldom. And heren les a tale wth a moral. Four adventurers arrved recently at Troon from Glasgow. Father, pretty daughter, her husband, me. It was the world's worst day. Cold, contnuous ran, venomous wnd. " Impossble " you would have sad. But the Scottsh tro appeared upon the tee, mackntoshed and unmoved. The Londoner followed, fant but pursung. Husband and I were to gve father and daughter a half. " Of course," one sad to oneself, " how can any woman stand up to ths "?... Not only dd she 27

TROON stand up to t, slently effcent, but she carred father round, metaphorcally, upon her back : splendd balls, sweetly struck. And four and three aganst us was the sum total of her vctory. Grt dd that, and a steady self-confdence. Such defeats are good for the soul of men. For sheer exhlaratng excellence, the seventh hole at Troon s perhaps the best of the hgh-grade eghteen. Standng on a rased tee wth your back to the sea, you vew the hole ahead and fdget for the couple n front to get on wth ther procrastnatons. Tel-el-Kebr, they call t a slght dog-leg, 370 yards. A well-placed drve to the left of a bg bunker, and you are on wth your second and down n four. Foozle ether of the frst two shots and an nfnty of trouble awats you. An absolutely perfect golfng hole, ths. The eghth they call locally "the Postage Stamp," though ts offcal name s " Alsa," because of the good vew of Alsa Crag to your left, seawards. The former name s the more apt. The green sts upas f slapped lke a penny stamp on the envelope of rsng ground. It s also known as " a three hole or a nne." That also s apt enough 120 yards only but on the green or thereabouts you smply must be. It s entrely surrounded wth trouble, and the added agony of \\vv-v,;,;-' -. 28

should TROON sharply-fallng ground to the left and rght, covered wth most Inmcal rough. It was ths short hole that began the downfall of Walter Hagen n the 123 champonshp ; t cost hm fve, and he never shook off the weght of those two strokes. Many people consder ths the best short hole n the world. I would not contradct the statement. The eghteenth, too, 370 yards, s a beautful golfng hole, but a terrfyng for two reasons : frstly, you are n full vew of the crtcal eyes behnd the smokng room wndows from the moment you take your stance on the tee untl you putt out ; secondly, there are no less than thrteen bunkers between you and home, most of them round the green. To make matters worse, there s on the left-hand sde of the green a double row of bunkers, lke second and front lne trenches. So that f fate puts you nto the second lne you are very prone to chp out nto the front lne nstead of on to the sanctuary of the ncomparable green : and ths wth a couple of dozen men lookng on, all wth the grateful and comfortng glass n hand. However, t s great golf, and the man who does a good score here has acheved somethng about whch he can talk wth justfable prde thereafter, and should be borne wth patently for that reason. The man who does a bad score, and hs name, beleve me, s legon, tches to get on to ths great course agan to retreve hs honour to get some of hs lost money back, and that self-respect whch s due to all who can acqut themselves credtably on one of Scotland's premer lnks. Of good scores on the Old Course at Troon here s an example, acheved not so long ago by four Scottsh amateurs. The bogey for ths dffcult course s 76. Notwthstandng that fact, the frendly four-ball foursome salled out blthely to defeat t. Ther score cards showed the followng : Earl Watson 6 Morton Dykes 71 Bob Nel 71 Wllam Campbell 72 And ther best ball was actually 60. All very well for dsgruntled people to refer to ths as " freak golf." I can only say that I feel hghly honoured to be known as " a freak " of ths class! 2

I do»a» "Cs^^^v PRESTWICK It s necessary to approach the task of wrtng about Prestwck Golf Club wth dffdence. It s a stronghold of golf n the best sense of that term. Most novtates, t s true, arrve also at St. Andrews to play on the course of the Royal and Ancent n a state of mnd borderng upon terror, because they have come to the ancent and venerable home of the game. Ths s not surprsng, because t s there that the laws of the game and all ts edcts and rules of etquette are framed and ssued to an obedent golfmg world. not have ths feelng at the Prestwck Club. They have extended a courteous welcome to me there on more than one occason, and have made me ther guest for the day. But I always feel, as many other Englshmen I know feel, that I have been admtted nto a brotherhood whch lves, moves and has ts golf scores (terrfyng scores some of them are, too) n a place set wdely apart from the medocrty of the golfng communty from the common or garden golfer, as t were. A convncng nstance of the prestge of Prestwck les n the fact that men wat many years for electon. It s a common practce, even now, to put your son's 30 I

share P RESTWICK name down for membershp soon after he s born, knowng well that he wll not get n before he s twenty : and not then unless he s of the good and true fraternty. Many people say, and I ther opnon, that t s the most dffcult golf n Scotland. It s a course whereon dread and awful thngs have happened to men on momentous occasons. It s a place calculated to shake the nerves of stocs. I am not wrtng as would he who s a steady scratch, or as he who, havng a natonal handcap, fears nether man nor bunkers, but as the very ordnary player who plays the game for the amusement and the charm of t, and wth whom t s not a means to the only possble end. For the great majorty of players, t s a fearful and wonderful place. Take the frst hole, for example. The frst tee s just outsde the grey stone Club House wndows, through the glass of whch past and present masters of the game stare coldly at your practce swng. Caddes, who have carred the clubs of champons, lean on the ron ralngs of ther pen behnd, takng stock of you. All along on your rght (or slcng hand), n terrble proxmty, runs the ralway lne, along whch rush whstle-blastng engnes. Was t not Vardon who put hs frst two balls out of bounds on to these same ralway lnes, and won the champonshp n spte of that? Even f you play warly to the left, here you have a grmly narrow openng to the green, moreover, you are off the lne of entry ; so you must needs play a mashe over a hll a very precptous hll to get on the green. The thrd, the famous Cardnal hole, a dog-leg, where another master of the game, James Brad, took nne n an Open Champonshp. The fourth, wth that omnvorous burn runnng all along on your rght (or slcng hand) agan. The world-famous ffth (the Hmalayas), where a good ron wll take you over the hll on to the green but where bad play s death to any card. The tenth, the superb, long 474 yards hole, from the rased tee lookng straght out to sea. The seventeenth (Alps) hole coped by admrng Amercans n plaster casts, dagrams, photos and drawngs, and reproduced on ther Natonal Course as representng one of the greatest golfng holes n the world. And so t s. Here upon a day n an Amateur Champonshp befell to one man a lovely and to another a very dreadful thng. On the seventeenth tee, In, F. G. Tat was one down to John Ball one down and two to go, and a terrble hole confrontng hm. Ther drves, I 31

PRESTWICK VS>^#A^ am told, were both as perfect as would be expected. So far so good. The tenson was acute : the crowd swarmed on. Ball put hs second well over the hgh bunker on to the green. Tat played. He was over, of course, but short. There s a pot bunker on the other sde guardng the green. There had been heavy rans. Ths pot bunker had a couple of feet of water n t. There was Tat's ball, half-floatng, half-submerged n the mddle of t. The champonshp was as good as won and lost. It was a dscovery that would have broken the heart of most men. Not so Tat's. He waded nto the water wth a nblck, a determned man who knew not the meanng of nerves. He ht hs ball out of the water to wthn two yards of the pn. Ths completely demoralsed John Ball for the moment, who thereupon took three putts and lost the hole. Any ordnary man would have succumbed after such an occurrence, and lost the champonshp. All square and one to go! They halved the eghteenth. Proceeded, therefore, to play the frst (thrty-seventh) hole, and John Ball won. Leadng players In Scotland, who were present on ths occason, would not admt that Tat had done anythng wonderful ; but t s the psychology of the matter that nterests me. At another hole on ths exctng day, Tat lad Ball what appeared to be an absolutely dead styme. Ball thereupon responded by producng calmly from hs bag a wooden putter, whch he had not prevously been usng at all, and scraped past nto the hole. The fnest putt that any man of that day had ever seen. 32

PRESTWICK The game of golf has been descrbed as " a successon of recoveres." Ths defnton s pecularly apt as regards Prestwck. You must play good, straght golf, and go on playng t all the way round. If you don't, woe betde you! But f you can and do, what a blssful feelng afterwards ; what pleasant recollectons. You can look back wth very justfable prde to the fact that you have acqutted yourself credtably upon one of the world's best and most hstorc courses. You play golf here as t was meant to be played. You observe wth grm severty the etquette of the game. You do not, for example, use ron clubs on the tees, except at holes whch call for an ron club. It s not done here. You have been prvleged (and t s n very truth a prvlege) to play a match wth some member and you have played t well. " " What further may be sought for or declared? You must get an ntroducton to play at Prestwck If you are a golfer and on the west coast of Scotland. Not to do so s to mss a golfng experence that s unque. And I would beg my reader not to be deterred by any feelng of dffdence at nvadng so conservatve and stad a place. Behnd the grm austerty of the ron-grey Club House, les a great kndlness to all strangers and a charmng unobtrusve hosptalty, truly Scottsh. They are, t s true, reserved and aloof untl they know you : but when they do, they are your brothers. TWELVE OF THE BEST ON THE LMS 33

ROYAL (Co. PORTRUSH Antrm) Founded n 80, ths course has been gong strong ever snce. It s about to go consderably stronger. I have read a good many reports of golf archtects, but never one n whch enthusasm was so thnly veled as s Mr. H. S. Colt's report on ths course's reconstructon. Portrush has always been "good " golf. Indeed, far too good for many a man and woman who has aspred to Champonshp honours upon ts trcky farways and subtle greens. But ts players have always been somewhat bothered by what s termed locally " the trangle " ; a part of the course havng rghts of way across t from roads and houses, much too adjacent from a golfer's standpont. Extremely good holes le upon ths trangular area of ground, but the passng and loterng pedestrans have not been looked upon n qute that category by men watng wth commendable mpatence to play ther shots. The detals of structural mprovements to ths delghtful holday course fll several closely prnted pages. The gst of them, however, s that there has always been land lyng handy, fashoned by nature most admrably for the game of golf, and ths s beng transformed for the purpose. Ths terran conssts of " turfy " 34

had ROYAL PORTRUSH sand dunes between the present course and the sea of a nature to cause a keen player, wanderng upon t, to exclam In wonderment that t was not utlsed for golf years ago. It s gong to be perfect. And by the tme ths lttle book s n your hands, you can go there to fnd that my superlatve statement Is no exaggeraton. Vast s the enterprse and prodgous the expendture. But ths place takes ts golf very serously : and one gets the mpresson, when wth those responsble for thus pantng the lly of ther lnks, of complete unanmty and ndomtable energy behnd the project. When the task has been completed, and the new holes hve been " played n," Portrush wll rank hgh ndeed among Brtsh qualty courses. I am sorry that the frst hole, as such, wll go nto the meltng pot. It s one of those heartenng tee shots, don't you know, on a very nervy mornng. Because you stand on an emnence and see below and before you what seems acres of vvd green wdth to your drve. These are helpful moments to most of us. There s another hole on ths beautful course, whch wll alter ts number, but not ts fascnatng character. It s one of those holes whch you remember long afterwards, amd a welter of others snce played. It s one of the most debatable holes n Ireland, f not n Brtan the (old) twelfth, 380 yards. You wll hear people say t s " bad " golf, and others wth equally low handcaps that t s " splendd." I asked two scratch players one day for an mpartal opnon, and obtaned answers n just these terms. It was certanly a hole strangely puzzlng to me when I that day one had to attack t wth two spoons to get on and I frst played t, for on never been asked to do that before anywhere. Blnd from the tee, you play over some mnature " Hmalayas," as at Prestwck. When you reach your well ht spoon shot t s only to fnd the ball lyng on smooth turf n a hollow, wth yet another " Hmalaya " between you and the stll blnd green. Mystfed, you ask : " What do I take now "? The wse cadde reples " : Take t agan, sr." And, marvellng greatly, you do. I may be prejudced because, provdence beng bengn, the second spoon shot plopped t ncely on, and I got my four. I should probably not do so agan under smlar condtons. The hole s fascnatng, because unusual and unorthodox. In any case, one cannot alter t materally wthout mutlatng nature, and no self-respectng golf archtect would wsh to do that. 35

have must ROYAL PORTRUSH The lades are extremely well looked after here, havng ther own new clubhouse and ther own modern-length course, of equal qualty to ours. In fact, I should call ther course on the dffcult sde : but, judgng by the standard of femnne play I them. seen there, my opnon s evdently not shared by some of Colt, conservatve n hs estmates as a rule, says that the new fourteenth wll work out nto one of the fnest short holes anywhere. He descrbes t as " strkngly bold." I say the sght of t thrlled me even when I saw t n the contractors' hands. But so dd all the new ones. And n consequence, I am dstnctly envous of my reader, who can now go and put them all to the test. But I hope he wll, because he wll thoroughly enjoy hmself. 36

THE ROYAL DUBLIN GOLF CLUB carryng a few clubs for hm f need be?" Answer: "Two shllngs." " Would you have the flags out by seven or eght In the mornng ; and would you consder 8.30 too late to be on duty on summer evenngs "? Answer " : I wll put out the flags at any hour requred and I would not consder 8.30 too late to be on duty." " Are you prepared to undertake to gve the puttng greens constant attenton and to keep them n thorough order "? Answer " : Yes." I wonder what some of our resplendent and fastdous " Pros. " of to-day would say to all ths? You, however, wll have no dffculty n fndng ths club house. Maybe you wll come n a tax from your Dubln hotel : but f n a humble tram they wll set you down at the entrance to the sea wall, and there, fve mnutes' walk away, looms the large and hosptable pnk, cream and brown club house wheren whmscal and gallant men have congregated daly for so many years. There s somethng partcularly refreshng (and rare) about a frst-class golf course when a great cty les wthn actual vew of ts farways. There are many unque features about Royal Dubln. Prmarly t stands upon an sland, completely surrounded by sea water. There may be others so stuated, but I have not found them. And to be thus marooned and at the same tme to see dmly n the dstance the pall of smoke over Dubln and the blue blur of the mountans behnd the cty s a very pleasant experence. For here the larks rse melodously, and the waves sng ther song on the sands : and bathers are dotted about the long foreshore : and the pageantry of the shppng s ever present so that a day at Dollymount s not soon forgotten. They call It, wth undue restrant I thnk, "Atypcal seasde lnks on whch the ball les close and requres accurate httng." It s much more than that. It s a mddle-aged course full of low cunnng : qute flat : concealng ts snares behnd a smlng face. Its les are postvely lovely : ts farways hummocky : ts greens large and elusve. You are beng contnually tempted to take rsks, the extent of whch you contnually underestmate. Two such devlsh stuatons reman vvd In my mnd. The Eleventh (" Colt's Hole ") : 524 yards. Durng a Champonshp or bg Competton you (or should I say " they "?) drve from a tee whch s extremely out of bounds. Far ahead, and slghtly to your left, stretches the fnest farway on the course, wde and nvtng. 38

. THE ROYAL DUBLIN GOLF CLUB Drectly ahead however, stretch acres of hostle, out of bounds rough. Over how much of ths penalty area dare you go wth the drve, so as to get a more advantageous second? Can you reach that delcous sunken green In two? Decsons trumphant and fatal have been made here many a tme. Strong In the fath, and n the swng, you go for It, by the longest road. You're over! Supreme exhlaraton. A perfect second s now needed. The flag flutters mockngly ; half ts pn hdden ; all ts guardng bunkers crouched low and Invsble, watng for you hopng! The doughty brassle shot rolls on...on.. drops out of sght.... " Fath, sorr, 'ts on the green, thanks be to God "!... There are some who wsh to rase ths green. That way madness les. They say they cannot play a proper second unless they can see the base of the pn. Why on earth not? As at present t Is a great hole, and should not be vandalsed by any such alteraton. Havng acheved a long trumph you wll now come to a short trepdaton. To the twelfth (162 yards) : the best masheshot n Ireland. Armour-plated wth bunkers. Indeed, I make so bold as to say that the four best short holes In Ireland, at the moment of wrtng, are the fourth, sxth, nnth and twelfth on ths fw^\ f^\ 3

THE ROYAL DUBLIN GOLF CLUB course. At the sxth (5 yards) one wndy day n March two famous Professonals both took ther drvers from the tee and were short of the green. It s a narrow valley through whch a north-easterly wnd sometmes sweeps wth a strength whch may be judged by the above statement. Consder fnally the case of a world-renowned Professonal at the eghteenth upon a tragc Champonshp day. Dre calamty befell hm upon the mornng and the afternoon rounds, as t has befallen many another of lesser prowess at ths vtal spot. The "Garden " Hole : 410 yards. The "garden " (t s out of bounds and beles ts name) stretches all along the rght-hand sde from the tee : a lovely farway straght ahead. The green s dog-legged to the rght, beyond the "garden." A brute of a bunker wats at the angle of the farway. I, perhaps, and you, perhaps, play canny. We ht a goodsh drve ; we play our second purposefully short ; and wth our thrd we go round the corner and are on ; two putts ; bogey fve ; perfect! Not so the ferocous-httng Pros. They want a four ; or even a three. So the second s smtten over a yawnng expanse of no-man's land ; the corner s thus cut, and the ball plops on to the green. But not always. Ths partcularly unhappy man crashed hs second nto the adjacent wre fence on both occasons, and retred precptately from the Irsh Open Champonshp sayng awful thngs.... Here, at Dollymount, as on all qualty courses, the battle s to the strong. And t s a fttng fnsh to a " needle " match, or when playng aganst a card, to be faced wth a problem such as ths. The best man at that moment wll keep hs end up valantly : the fral wll falter and fall. But whether vctor or vanqushed there s always the haven of the nneteenth hole ; and that hole at Royal Dubln s of a qualty thoroughly to satsfy the most exactng player. 47 have HOYLAKE (The Royal Lverpool Golf Club) Hoylake, for t s known throughout the golfng world by ths rather than ts proper ttle, celebrated ts jublee, and wth t, ncdentally, the jublee of ts popular professonal, Jack Harrs, In 122. And ths, I thnk, s one of the most characterstc thngs about t ts long popularty. For to us n England ffty years s somewhat of an age for a golf course. It has always been n the van of Englsh golf affars. It was here that the frst Amateur Champonshp (an unoffcal one, I beleve) was played n 85. And t s, as everyone knows, one of the champonshp courses, and remarkably well run these onerous and tryng meetngs are bythe club Commttee, under great dffcultes ; because at certan places there are " rghts of way " over the course ; and nowhere can you keep a clamorous crowd of several thousand spectators away from rksome propnquty to the players. Controversy envelops dscussons about Hoylake sometmes. I heard men say unknd thngs about t but they are generally long handcap players. 41

H O Y L A K E You wll fnd that men wth Natonal Handcaps reman slent durng these heated debates, and f referred to merely say " : It s fne golf." And so, of course, t s, unquestonably. But the reason, perhaps, why t makes enemes among unsteady players s that t s a deceptve course. In amplfcaton of my meanng, let us take one famous hole, the seventh (200 yards). Ferce argument has raged over ths short hole. In the 124 Open Champonshp several glt-edged professonals, seagreen ncorruptbles where short holes are concerned, goc Into serous trouble here. Some of them condemned t as beng " unfar golf." The reason s that the green s very narrow. On ts Immedate left s a low turf wall. Over that wall s the dreaded " out of bounds," whch s a constant menace at some of Hoylake's holes. In front of the green s a patch of rushes. Along the rght-hand sde s a grassy and very nmcal grassy furrow. The trouble wth many people here s that, standng on the tee and seeng lttle of the lurkng danger, they become ntent at once on gettng a three. Ths s a very dftcult achevement. They all tred for t n the 124 Champonshp hence the anger and dscontent. But as Walter Hagen, the wnner, sad when questoned afterwards about " t : They all tred balloon rons ; they should have played (as he dd) a half-topped dead straght ron ; then f you do get a wee hook on t you are lkely to kck n off the turf wall." All ths s very advanced golf, and the seventh s a very advanced golfer's hole, than whch, surely, there can be no hgher complment. It s at Hoylake you see what advanced golf really means; and that s one reason why you should go there. I hope strangers to Hoylake wll not become dsapponted, as I was, when I frst saw ths battlefeld of gants. It does not flaunt ts goodness abroad for all to see ; t has hdden charms ; t has always somethng up ts sleeve, as t were. Flat? Yes, but so s St. Andrews flat, and a dozen other world-renowned places ; and the more you play on t the more you want to. To me t Is always redolent of the stran of great occasons, and strangely fascnatng for that reason. So often here have the gants of the game been mentally tortured. Take for example the case of Walter Hagen and Ernest Whtcombe n 124. The last hole n the fnal round. Hagen had only young Ernest Whtcombe, who had been the marvel of the Meetng, to beat. Fve thousand people at least between tee and hole, most of them scurryng hther

H O Y L A K E and thther for places lke harred sheep ; stewards bawlng through megaphones (they had to bawl) ; the very ar seemed vbrant wth expectaton ; and Hagen, standng on the tee watng for the course to be cleared, the embodment of statuesque calm the only person who was. He asked what hs adversary had done. He was told he must get a four to wn ; and those who know the Stand hole on a day lke that, wll realse what ths means. What the wnnng of the Brtsh Open Champonshp means, fnancally, to an Amercan, presumably only an Amercan can tell. " Is that so "? was all Hagen sad. Then he ht hs drve three hundred yards down the mddle of the farway. He requred only a mashe-nblck to the green, but he overran t a yard nto the rough. At once the bg probablty of a te wth Whtcombe became apparent. Everyone craned forward. Hundreds of pounds were mmedately wagered n whspers. The stoc chpped t back on to the green. Remaned a two-yard putt for a four and vctory. There was no hestaton, no crouchng, no crtcal studyng of the lne. He just came up and looked at t steadly a bref concentrated survey of the matter then he tapped t frmly nto the back of the hole as casually as f he were practsng on a puttng course after tea. People rushed at hm, as they always rush at wnners, but he gnored them all ; he just kssed hs wfe, and wth her he walked away. And that was that I 43

H O Y L A K E Meanwhle what of Whtcombe? Reflect upon hs feelngs, as he sat for an hourandahalf n the club house, watng for Hagen to pay for one mstake, whch would gve hm the greatest honour of hs career and entrely change hs professonal status. Just one lttle rremedable mstake. Surely, wth those condtons out there, he must.... But he dd not. And so the honour, danglng before hs eyes for what must have seemed an eternty of tme, was flcked away. And the master, Bobby Jones, here, when he was out for all four Champonshps n one year. The hghest golfng honour that has ever come to a man. He wated, tense, for three-quarters of an hour n ths clubhouse, to know f Leo Degel would follow hm In wth a better score. But to hm fate was knd on that occason. Over courses where golfng hstory s made, there hangs nvarably an atmosphere of a dstnctly dramatc knd : at least so t always seems to me. It s nsprng to play, n our quet unencumbered manner, the holes that the masters of the game have played on days when all ther artstry and self-control has been called upon through hours of grm concentraton, wth the stakes so hgh and the consequences so dynamc. Hoylake wll gve you ths feelng on the quetest of Its days. The nteror appontments and servce of the clubhouse are those of a good West End Club. And f you have the mpresson that, because of ts somewhat " swagger " nature, strangers are not welcome, let me tell you that you err. Members of recognsed golf clubs have the entree at all tmes. And the courtesy they receve here wll be a pleasant addton to a most nstructve golfng day. TWELVE OF THE BEST ON THE LMS 44

had FORMBY Formby Golf Course s one of the several excellent courses whch le alongsde the ralway between Lverpool and Southport. Lest the unwary stranger to these parts, seekng ths club, should get out at Formby staton, as he would naturally be prone to do, he should be warned that hs staton s the next one, Freshfeld, from whch the Club House Is dstant only two hundred yards. Formby has a feature whch, although you may say, perhaps, t s a mnor one, becomes nevertheless a matter of consderable mportance sometmes t has a wooden shelter from the ran at every hole. I make ths statement wth some feelng, because I arrved there for the frst tme upon a day when the glass was fallng, followng a successon of days when I been soaked regularly n the pursut of golf, and I noted the presence of these shelters thankfully. The frendly rvalry exstng between golf courses on the Lverpool-Southport lne s marked, and to strangers amusng. Ths part of the world remnds one of the Ayrshre coast n the plethora of ts courses. They may not all be of such " classc " character as are some of the Scottsh ; but they are all good ; and 45

have F O R M B Y they le along ths stretch of lne n almost unendng array. There would seem to be lttle excuse for the Lverpool busness man, or woman, not to be a sngle fgure player many of them are. A Londoner whose golf Is n the nature of an expedton to a far country, vews ther fortunate crcumstances wth consderable envy. I played on eght very excellent golf courses wthn a twenty-fve mnutes' electrc-tran journey from the centre of Lverpool there are probably more. Ths means that a round after offce hours s not only possble, but easy and economcal daly from early sprng to autumn. Formby, rankng very hgh n ths collecton of excellence, has done a great deal n the way of mprovements to ts terran durng the last few years. As a matter of fact, the present fourteenth green s the only one fulfllng ts orgnal purpose. One Is gven the mpresson here of a quetly prosperous place where the settled polcy s to put profts back nto the ground wth commendable regularty ; a most excellent feature from the vstor's pont of vew. It Is hardly necessary, perhaps, to say of so famous a course as Formby, that the turf and the greens are of unform excellence everywhere. What one may say, however, s that ths s not a course for the hestant begnner, or the nveterate sheer ; or for the man who has not the least dea where hs tee shot or brasse s gong to land hm. He wll depart glumly at the end of a catastrophc day. But for the man (such as my opponent here on one occason) who can say : " I shall put a slght cut on ths and play t out nto the wnd, so that when t goes over the left-hand edge of that hll the wnd wll brng t back onto the green " for all such, and for those who see a reasonable chance of becomng so n due tme, then a day at Formby wll not be soon forgotten. Nor a week-end's golf, whch s even better ; for they have some comfortable bedrooms here n whch, as you mght expect n hosptable Lancashre, vstors are welcome whenever there s room. I cannot thnk of any golf course n Great Brtan where women players have a better tme. The Formby lades have ther own excellent club house here, and ther own course, whch seems to me to be very nearly as good as the men's. better place n England for two women who want a quet, nerveless day's golf together from Lverpool or Southport. No 46

F O R M B Y Gong back one evenng n the tran to Lverpool, I reflected v^hat a splendd golfng holday four men could have n ths part of the v/orld. A base at the Lverpool Adelph Hotel famed, justly, for ts comfort. Brdge or the theatres at nght ; and each day a dfferent course of great charaaer to explore ; n all of whch they v^^ould be taken to the cheery bosom of the golfng fraternty ; to each of whch they could get wth a mnmum of nconvenence and expense. An deal prospect for any quartette, whose holdays have been deferred untl the autumn, when the seasde lure has gone, but when these courses are probably at ther best ; when the evenngs can be spent n the warm comfort of the cty and the mellow days on these smooth and beautful farways. 47

BIRKDALE Men become ngraned Into ther own home courses. Ths may seem at frst lke slack wrtng ; but on reflecton you wll, I thnk, apprecate what I mean. It represents half ther lves. Partcularly s ths so when men are not mmersed In the maelstrom of actvtes In a cty lke London, but lve at a less exactng place lke Southport. Hereabouts ther golf looms large n current affars, magne, therefore, the general consternaton when the Southport Corporaton announced, wthout warnng, that they proposed to make a road through the eleventh and twelfth holes n the nterest of adjacent buldng development! The entre course was thus thrown out of gear. Prolonged and emphatc was the consequent murmuratlon. A complete reconstructon of ths cheery Lancastran stronghold became necessary. But when the experts mmedately concerned wth the matter got down to detals t became clear that the Corporaton's acton was really a blessng n dsguse. Hawtree and Taylor's plan showed the drastc alteraton of eght exstng holes and the constructon of four new holes. Incdentally, a new club house on a new ste 48

B I R K D A L E also became necessary : and ths was a dstnct advantage, as ther present nneteenth hole was nadequate to modern bonhome and effcency n any case. Every hole would, of course, be renumbered and altogether Brkdale would enter upon a new lease of lfe, lengthened and markedly mproved. One questoned the able Treasurer about money. W-ell, there was a bt of money safely tucked away n ther coffers. Ths caused no surprse to the questoner, for he was n Lancashre, where money somehow or other nvarably appears when t s urgently needed! So that when ths lttle book appears the Brkdale course that you may have known and, f knowng, enjoyed, wll be no more. Somethng much more grandose wll have appeared for your pleasure and (n my case) the opponent's proft. The golf archtects, when summoned to deal wth the supposed catastrophe, must have revelled n the task. There was so much magnfcent materal to ther hands. Everywhere, at Brkdale, are hazards ready made, and nsdously receptve to the slce or hook. The valleys f you can keep n them are admrable golfng ground from two ponts of vew. Frstly they gve a peaceful round. For almost the length of every hole you are hdden from other players, and they from you. Secondly, ther texture and surface are superlatvely good for the second or thrd shot. Very few artfcal bunkers are necessary ; the bases of the sandhlls and the tough wllowy scrub that grows on them fulfl these functons ; and when they are not snarng the unwary, the lttle hdden dtches whch dran the course are a frequent menace. In fact, here s golf of the knd we n the South long for and seldom get. Hawtree and Taylor wll merely have to ttvate, and push out a lttle here, rase a green there, move sdeways a tee, or elongate an exstng "carry." The new holes, as I saw them, looked exctng enough n the raw. When fnshed and " played n " they wll be perfect specmens of golf at ts best. There would seem to be good foundaton for local ambton to make ths a " Champonshp " course. Its new length wll brng t nto the requred category to receve the honour ; general character wll ensure a hgh test of accuracy n play ; the dffcultes wll be profound ; surfaces of farways and greens wll be as they always have been, ts frst class ; and the vared and suffcent accommodaton n neghbourng Southport, and a very frequent electrc tran servce from Lverpool, wll count much In favour of holdng bg Meetngs here. 4

went B I R K D A L E A word as to the Brkdalans themselves. The frst tme I there, although on duty bent, nobody knew that, and I dd not tell them. I was just a player, seekng a game. A stranger In the land. But not for long. I was co-opted nto a four-ball foursome wthn fve mnutes, and have seldom enjoyed a match more. Years ago ths was, and yet I remember t as f t had been last Saturday. And nto another n the afternoon even more cheery! Read dspassonately and far from the spot, ths may not seem remarkable. It s not n Lancashre. But those errant golfers, whose dffdence when on the threshold of strange courses tends to make ther days a doubtful pleasure, wll apprecate how gratfyng s the feelng when ther welcome s spontaneous and mmedate, and how the qualty of ther own game s enhanced by an envronment they dd not expect but are most grateful to receve.

was I ST. ANNES-ON-SEA (Royal Lytham & St. Ames Golf Club) I Ths world-famous place s much more than a golf club. It s a focal pont of socal assembly for men who play the game (n the wdest sense of that phrase) but have to lve consderable dstances away. From as far away as Manchester, Lverpool, even Leeds they come. would come gladly from much further. For t s n many respects an deal place for a man's week-end, wth excellent golf as the prme but not only motve. Mantaned as a good socal club should be, and havng been frequented by men of standng for a generaton or more, t has acqured a dgnty of men to whch t s justly enttled. It delghts also n the presence of an admrable Secretary one Pym Wllamson whose cheery and effcent nfluence has been felt here contnuously for the last thrty years. The qualty of ts golf s such that Champonshps have been played upon t ; and dramas nseparable therefrom have been enacted on most of ts beautful farways and slppery, close-shaved greens. When I last here the fourth round of the Boys' Champonshp was n progress. Ths Meetng I may say s a pognant 51

ST. ANNES-ON-SEA sght to those of us whose golfng qualty Is on the wane! On ths day happened an almost mraculous trumph for one Wllam Dale, a Scottsh youth of sxteen years ; and an overwhelmng tragedy to hs opponent, Davd Wemyss, seventeen years old, the favourte for the Champonshp. Dale was seven holes down wth eght to play. Wemyss, out (f you please!) n 35, was sx up, and, wnnng the tenth n a splendd four, placed hmself n what seemed to the large gallery an mpregnable poston. Feelng hmself secure, however, he lapsed from the concentraton so necessary on these occasons ; as the holes began to slp away he found, greatly to hs surprse and chagrn, that hs excellent game had gone. Sezng hs chance, Dale began to play nspred golf, dong the last eght holes n thrty-one and squarng the match at the eghteenth. The sprt of many an experenced Champonshp player would have been broken by ths reverse of fortune ; and the nneteenth was too much for Wemyss, who put hs brasse shot nto a bunker and, only just recoverng, was beaten. and As an nstance of the sort of thng that can happen to you at St. Annes, here s a good example. Mr. Farbanks, a steady fve player, durng the St. Andrews meetng stood on the eghteenth tee requrng only a four for a seventy-four, whch would have won hm (1) The Tat Memoral Medal ; (2) The Club Sweep {z not nconsderable affar) ; and (3) a te for the Frst Handcap Prze. What dd he do? He took seven for ths hole amd the groans of all hs frends and backers and you can do ths sort of thng anywhere at St. Annes. Although, on gazng down at the eghteenth from the clubroom wndows, and hearng of ths catastrophe, you say " : How upon earth?"... For t looks a perfectly straghtforward, rather easy, four a possble three. A long straght drve between wng bunkers; a short run up to the green. Be not deceved by appearances here. It s the bunkers that may be your downfall, as they were hs upon that woeful day and as they are usually responsble for mne. A letter n advance to the Secretary and permsson wll be accorded to you to stay n ther Dormy House, overlookng the frst tee, f they have room at the tme. Ths opportunty should not be mssed. Extreme comfort wthout extravagance wll be your porton. And you wll meet men durng your stay whom you wll long remember wth pleasure. You wll be expected to play moderately good golf here though frendly commseraton wll not be lackng'f you do not. Lytham s one of those extremely subtle courses that looks easer than t s. Its charms grow upon you. Havng played, perhaps, abomnably badly, the urge s almost rresstble to tackle t agan. And f your round here has been good, and you have come n wth a card that s worth keepng, beleve me you have played extremely well and have every reason for the prde that wll be yours. 52

ST. ANNES-ON-SEA In concluson, let me depart from the serous ven (you are not allowed to mantan that men long at ths club anyway) and record a lttle matter whch wll go down to golfng hstory. Upon a day members of the Oxford and Cambrdge Golfng Socety came here, and for a spell of days they stayed, lvng n the purple. There s a staple dsh at lunch composed of a form of potted shrmps, the genune artcle. These shrmps found much favour n the eyes of the 'Varsty golfers, and they sad so, clamorously. Wherefore, when they had gone, amd expressons of deep and mutual regret, Lytham and St. Annes members put ther heads together, as the sayng s.
