3 The Canadan Olympc School Program (COSP) s desgned n accordance wth the founder of the modern Olympc Movement, Perre de Coubertn s, phlosophy of Olympsm. By recognzng the value of Olympans and coaches as role models, the program engages students wth the joy found n effort whle blendng sport wth culture and educaton. The Athlete and Coach stores balance ntellectual nstructon, cultural development and physcal educaton. The heart of the currculum focuses on partcpaton, effort and the prde n knowng you have gven your all to the pursut of excellence. OLYMPIC VALUES AS EDUCATIONAL TOOLS The worldwde Olympc values of frendshp, excellence and respect act as a foundaton for these stores. Each Athlete and Coach story wll focus on the development of a character value wthn your students. By engagng students n each narratve, they have the opportunty to expand ther understandng of ths value and to expand ther moral capabltes. BLENDING SPORT WITH CULTURE AND EDUCATION Each Athlete and Coach story s talored to three readng levels: Bronze (grades 2 and 3), Slver (grades 4 and 5), and Gold (grades 6 to 8). Each story comes wth progressve actvtes that are open- ended and talored to address a dverse range of learnng styles and profcences. They focus on sx man facets of understandng: explanng, nterpretng, applyng, takng perspectve, empowerng and developng self- knowledge. These crtcal thnkng sklls are woven nto all three stages of the learnng sequence n order to promote deeper understandng of the values and concepts. Through many facets of the Canadan Olympc School Program, chldren and youth can connect values to ther lves at home, at school and n ther local communty. Perhaps they can begn to see ther world n new and dfferent ways. TEACHING GUIDE FOR EDUCATORS Current currculum theory emphaszes the mportance of renforcng value messages through narratves, storytellng, art, posters, drama, and physcal movement. Actvtes based on the stores, events, ceremones and symbols of the Olympc Games have school-wde relevance. 4 OLYMPIAN STORY DOMINIQUE MALTAIS DETERMINATION Domnque Maltas was gettng ready for her frst snowboard cross qualfcaton race at the Vancouver 2010 Olympc Wnter Games. She was a ferce compettor. At the Turn 2006 Olympc Wnter Games she had won a bronze medal. She expected another medal n Vancouver. She lost control on a tranng run, and fell down hard on her back. As she lay on the ground, she wondered f she was paralyzed. She was releved when she was able to move her foot. Then she coughed up blood. SILVER LEVEL Ths was a very Grades 4-5 serous njury.

5 She went to a clnc at the mountan. The doctor asked her what she wanted to do. Of course she would race! She was n a lot of pan. I dd everythng to qualfy for the fnals, but I was scared and dscouraged, she recalls. I was short of breath. I hurt everywhere and could barely move. She fnshed 20th n the qualfcatons. She ddn t advance to the fnals. That evenng, she went to the hosptal for a CAT scan and was told that her lung was badly njured. Domnque was crushed! When she went home to Montreal, she cred every day. She ddn t want to speak to anyone. She took a long break from snowboardng. Domnque spent tme cyclng and kte surfng. The more she thought about her career, the more she knew that she ddn t want the fall to be her last Olympc experence. She decded to contnue tranng, and be better than ever. She mproved her det and her tranng program, focusng on mprovng her starts, quckness and technque. Her traners found ways to end the pan of a naggng knee njury. Her efforts pad off. She won four straght Crystal Globes as the overall World Cup champon n snowboard cross. Snce 2003, Domnque had worked as a frefghter n Montreal. Leadng up to the Soch 2014 Olympc Wnter Games, she took tme off from her job to focus on tranng. She wanted to gve t her best shot. CONFIDENCE What does t mean to be confdent? What does ths look lke? For Domnque confdence means knowng she dd everythng she could to prepare for her performance at the Soch 2014 Olympc Wnter Games. As soon as she arrved n Soch, she felt overwhelmng confdence. There was no other place on the planet where I would rather be. My key words were all or 5 DOMINIQUE MALTAIS SOCHI 2014

6 nothng and no excuses. I knew that thngs would go well ths tme. Just lke n Vancouver, the warm temperatures made the course challengng. But ths tme Domnque was ready. In every round she executed her plan. She dodged around another snowboarder who fell n front of her n the sem-fnal. As she stood at the top of the mountan for the fnal race, she felt very relaxed. She was as well prepared as possble. The race started and the racers were off. Domnque was not the frst one out of the gate, and several compettors passed her early n the race. But she dd not panc. She had practced dfferent tactcs, and she knew when and where to pass others. She navgated the jumps perfectly, and was aggressve on the turns. She moved nto second place and crossed the fnsh lne wth a slver medal. She was elated. She grabbed a Canadan flag and celebrated wth her frends and her dad. Later, as she stood on the podum to receve her slver medal, she felt an enormous weght lfted from her shoulders. Now, Domnque says her experence n Vancouver was the best thng that happened to her. NEVER GIVE UP. BELIEVE IN YOUR DREAMS. GIVE YOUR EVERYTHING, AND SHOW HUMILITY. DOMINIQUE MALTAIS It was such a slap n the face that t made me bounce back, forge my character, and realze that lfe sn t always easy. It brought out the warror n me. If I had done well n Vancouver, I may have decded to retre. But I decded to contnue, and t was worth t. I have learned so much throughout my sports journey. DOMINIQUE MALTAIS SOCHI 2014 DOMINIQUE MALTAIS SOCHI 2014 DOMINIQUE MALTAIS TURIN 2006 IN SNOWBOARD CROSS, the athletes race down a demandng course. There are lots of corners and jumps. Competng n groups of sx, there are often falls and jostlng as the boarders go for the best poston. In each round, the top three n a group advance to the next round, untl just the sx best boarders are left to race for the gold medal. ELIMINATION HEATS: 6

Class Sharng Referrng to ther ndvdual work, students share ther deas about determnaton wth the class. The teacher records these on a class t-chart, smlar to the one students used ndvdually. PROCESSING USING STRATEGIES TO ACQUIRE AND USE KNOWLEDGE Read the story ndvdually or as a class. A T-chart for Domnque Indvdually, students complete a new t-chart, magnng that they are Domnque Maltas. What does her determnaton look lke? What does t sounds lke? Class Dscusson Students share ther deas about Domnque s t-chart and these are added to the class t-chart. Responses should nclude the self-talk and reflectons Domnque makes, such as Beleve n your Dreams and Never gve up. TRANSFORMING SHOWING UNDERSTANDING IN A NEW WAY Wrtng an Ode to Determnaton Students reflect on an actvty, goal or area for personal growth. Some examples mght be achevng a specfc level n an actvty of nterest or mprovng a skll. Keepng ths n mnd, students wll use the deas generated from the t-chart and ther personal reflectons to wrte an Ode to Determnaton. The graphc organzer template outlnes the requrements for each lne. Encourage students to use ther words and also words from the artcle to create ther poems. 7
