1 1 nsorshp student (D} JSe&mtcc purple The Offcal Organ of the Students of the Unversty of the South A Legacy oj 103 years of Student Journalsm NOVEMBER 22, 1994 VOLUME CLXXV, N0.6 THEUNlVl-.KMn OF SO 11 SEW ANEE,TN Btng the Hand that Feeds Us by Chrs Cudabac News Edtor "The thought of gong to dnner flls me wth dread." Thus, n a somewhat melodramatc fashon, dd a senor sum up hs feelngs towards Marrott, feelngs that many share. Ths semester has seen the a sudden surge of expressed dscontent wth the food servces offered on the Mountan. Whle few, f any, agreed wth the tone and style of the Marrott Hater (see related story on pg. 3), hs letter expressed a deep feelng of dscontent shared by many. Few would say, however, that Marrott s unnterested n feedback or unresponsve when they receve t. So as to receve just ths sort of feedback, students were nvted to jon a board of drectors whch now oversees the food servces here. Many of the mprovements, lke the contnuous dnng system, were products, n part, of these board meetngs. Accordng to Tom Kepple, who as Vce Presdent for Busness and Communty Relatons s the admnstrator n charge of food servces, many of the problems are due to facltes, whch s the responsblty of the Unversty. The most famous problem here has been the nsect stuaton. That s to say, there were qute a few cockroaches about earler ths there are stll any around s not for lack of effort on Marrotts part. Galor s now beng sprayed for bugs every other evenng. Dr. Kepple noted, and, over Chrstmas break, s due to receve what the Board of Drectors mnutes descrbe as a "very major bombng." Most of Sewanee s famlar wth the expermentaton wth the Wellness lne earler ths semester. Ths ntal attempt was ended when lnes were consstently huge for the "unwellness" lne. After ths, nstead of havng a specfc lne, Wellness tems were ncorporated nto the man servng lnes. Recently, the Wellness coordnator for Marrott at UT-Martn vsted to gve advse on how better to do the Wellness program better here The current plans call for a smaller lne devoted to Wellness tems along the lnes of the Mexcan/potato bar. The plate stuaton at the BC has had elements of a bad comedy. Earler ths year, the BC was usng many plates that were chpped or cracked. After t was ponted out that ths was unsantary, these plates were trashed. t was only after ths that replacements were ordered. Thus the sudden and appallng prevalence of styrofoam plates for a tme. The contnuous dnng program at the BC contnues to be a good thng, especally wth the now contnuous supply of hamburger pattes. The BC has also had ts problems, however, wth nsects, but these have semester. The reason, t would seem, that Good Coffee, Good Bagels, Good Fun by Angela Ward A new socal opton s n the makng here on the Mountan, and f t pans out, t mght just put an end to the frat house monopoly of the campus socal scene. Determned sophomore Maryetta Anschutz has taken the rens n a strong movement to obtan Unversty fundng for the constructon of a new coffeehouse n the empty basement space below Sundaes. Ms. Anschutz has completed a detaled proposal delneatng the desgn and plans for the constructon and mantenance of a coffeehouse. Death of a Salesman, revewed on page 11. At present. Dr. Woody Regster, the faculty advsor for the coffeehouse commttee, s revsng and refnng the proposal to prepare t for submttal for approval by the admnstraton. What Ms. Anschutz envsons s a "very eclectc and fun place," where the "most conservatve and the most off-the-wall people" can feel comfortable hangng out together. She descrbes the coffeehouse as a place where "students can come back twenty years from now and sayths place s a part of me." Accordng to Ms. Anschutz, the hangouts tables wll be desgned and bult by Contnued on page 3 Photo by Lyn Hutchnson not been qute so bad as at ( lalo The prmary woe that the BC now experences, one tha Galor also know s, s hat ol tryng to make certan tha plates get properly cleaned. The Monument to Drt Sewanee students have been questonng the purpose of the mvsetrous constructon between Woods Labs and Carnege Hall. The so-called Monument to Drt s actually a memoral to Sylva Barry. Barry worked for the Unversty as the assstant treasurer for many years. Henry Yateman cleared up the mystery of the bugs for the Purple. Ladybugs gather yearly to hbernate n hollow trees or sometmes attcs and basements. That s why Quntard and Gorgas were covered wth ladybugs for several days. Ladybugs are not as harmless as they appear: several students have reported beng btten. Although they are an annoyance now, t belter not to kll them because they wll protect our plants n the sprng by eatng plant lce (a pressng problem n all our lves). Fles have also been a problem. 3 know,, n began hara November The Japanese Legacy Contnues by Tana Samman Dversty takes on a new meanng n Sewanee s language program. For the past two years, begnnng level courses have been offered n Japanese, taught by kuko Akyama. As her contractual agreement comes to a close, steps are beng made to contnue her legacy of Japanese at ths school kuko Akyama has been n Amerca for nearly one and a half years. She attended Keo Unversty n Tokyo, whch she saj S s much dfferent from Sewanee. Her unversty was surrounded by busness buldngs, and she loves the solaton and sze of Sewanee. More mportantly, she loves teachng n such a relaxed envronment. The educaton system n Japan s much dfferent from the Amercan system. There s a bg governmental department for educaton n Japan, and teachers encounter a lot of frustratng bearocracy. Teachng n Japan s very hard as there are hardly any holdays. From elementary school to hgh school, students attend school fve days a week, and must return on the weekends to compete n sports tournaments. Elementary school students come home at around 11p.m. after they are through wth school, sports, and cram schools. Chldren study rdculous amounts for exams to get Coffeehouse, contnued students, and all of the artwork and murals wll be done by art students. She envsons old postcards from the SPO harrgng on the walls, and places for regulars to hang ther own personal mugs on the celng. Furthermore, "there wll be a very eclectc varety of perodcals and books runnng the gamut from lberal to conservatve." Ms. Anschutz also envsons chalkboards on whch students can comment on the ssues of the week, a knd-of "forum for ssues." Meanwhle, lve entertanment at the coffeehouse wll nclude student bands and bands from off the Mountan, as well as poetry readngs and any other forms of lve performance n whch students show nterest. Accordng to Drector of Student Actvtes Lsa Manley, "t wll be an open slate for anyone who wants to do anythng n there." As far as the menu, Ms. Anschutz says that the coffeehouse, whch wll not be afflated wth Marrot, wll offer "really orgnal tems...alternatve drnks and wonderful, dfferent knds of snacks." The menu wont nclude anythng substantal, but nstead wll focus on provdng "qualty thngs such as real bagels from caterers on and off the Mountan" and good coffee, ncludng cappuccno and espresso. Accordng to Ms. Anschutz. "Prces can be kept low because coffee cheap, and were not lookng for proft anyway." Furthermore, chargng nto good elementary schools. However college work s much more relaxed Once you are accepted, you barely have to study at all! The hardest part about teachng n Japan, kuko thnks, s the class s/e. A regular hgh school class has about forty to forty fve Students There s no real communcaton between the students and the teachers. The currculum s chosen al a governmental level, and t s hard to keep pace wth the rgd standards set for the students s tems on student.d.s and usng flex dollars mght even be an opton. Though Ms. Anschutz s plan calls for non-students to be hred to fll full-tme manager and assstant manager postons, t strongly favors an addtonal management structure consstng entrely of students. Fur - thermore, Ms. Anschutz. plans to hre work study and non-work study students As far as servng hours. Ms. Anschutz suggests that the coffeehouse wll be open n the mornng and at nght untl mdnght or 2:00. yet she says, "The hours are very flexble rght now snce ths s a new venture." Students and faculty alke appearto agree kuko Akyama s a member of "Exchange Japan," a program that places fapa nese teachers n an Amercan unversty fo two years, teachng one course a semester whle takng classes to acqure a degree o the teachers choce. Akyama s gettng a degree n Russan and s workng hard to fulfll all her requrements. Beng both a teacher and a student has helped her teach and study language at Sewanee. "t was very frustratng at frst," kuko stated. " couldnt understand why students couldnt answer!" Now she understands the dffcultes n learnng foregn languages and s very happy wth how well her students are dong. Akyama would lke to stay n Amerca when her contract expres at the end ofsecond semester. She realzes that t s mpossble to stay at Sewannee forever, but wants one more year to broaden her Russan educaton before her return to Japan. She admts that at frst her that the coffeehouse s a badly needed socal opton. Accordng to Dr. Regster, "We feel there s a need for a socal place on campus for student to student, student to faculty, and faculty to faculty nteracton wthn a nonacademc settng. Sewanee needs a socal place that s not orented around the consumpton of alcohol " Ms. Anschutz agrees, "Sewanee s so geared towards the fral beer party. We dont want to take away from that. We just want to provde another socal opton." Though ts supporters feel that the coffeehouse s a strong possblty n the near future, the dea s not wthout ts problems, the asbestos n the basement of Sundaes beng one of the most mmedate. Accordng to Dean Guerry, "The problems are the cost and the queston of whether t wll be used enough, gven that theres one down at Shenangans." However, Ms. Anschutz holds. "The coffeehouse at Shenangans s not really popular, and ts not actually a true coffeehouse. ts really more lke a coffee shop." Accordng to Dean Guerry, n a recent meetng Dr. Kepple, Drector of Busness and Communty Actvtes, sad that the coffeehouse s "not gonna happen." However. Ms. Anschutz s proposal has yet to ht the Vce-Chancellors desk, so a st.ong possblty stll remans. n the meantme, we can keep our fngers crossed. Monteagte jcorst We Delver to Sewanee Daly! She ntroduces herself n lttle voce soundng lke the Saturday Nght Lve mpersonaton of the stereotypcal Freudan therapst ("Zo, tell me about yormuzzer " As soon as she says the M word (and dont mean "mother"), the audence dssolves nto gggles Dr. Doof ts lke watchng a badly-dubbed move: the words and the mage dont add up. The problem s that once you get used to the ncongruous sght of a Jewsh grandmother talkng about sex (whch takes about fve mnutes), there s nothng left to sustan your nterest. People started leavng thrty mnutes nto her talk. The guy next to me read hs newspaper. wanted to ask f 1 could see the entertanment secton, because there was no entertanment on the stage. Ffteen years ago. Dr. Ruth may have been a hardy poneer blazng the trals ofsexual lteracy, but those once untrodden paths are now asphalt nterstate hghways, and Dr. Ruth has not kept up. Even 75 year old Ann Landers publshed a column last year (October 24, 1993) n whch she wrote " am recommendng self-gratfcaton or mutual masturbaton...[as] a sane and safe alternatve to ntercourse " Ths s a column read by 90 mllon people n newspapers world wde. And all Dr. Ruth has to say about everybodys favorte hobby s that t doesnt cause your palms to sprout and saw the management change from Soger to Servce Master and then to the present Marrott. She s the most dsllusonng knd of former radcal a rch, frmly entrenched establshment fgure whose number one prncple s not to offend anyone. Aborton must reman legal n order to save women from back-room coat-hanger abortons, but aborton must not be used as brth control. She walks the pro-choce walk whle she talks the pro-lfe talk. She vels her opnons on homosexualty n flm-flamy "scence." "The etology of homosexualty s not known," she announced. n other words, all of her thrty years of experence n the feld of sex studes has brought her to the concluson that homosexuals may or may not be bom gay. Just to cover all the bases, though, she smugly dsmsses the psychologcal theory that gay mens sexual development may have been nfluenced by a powerful mother. (t s au courant among hp lberals and gay rghts actvsts to scoff at the "overbearng mother" theory.) But, she adds, scentfc research has not yet been able to locate a bologcal or physologcal cause of homosexualty. On the topc of sexually transmtted dsease, t was more of the same. The only safe sex s no sex, but f you cant wat untl marrage, wear a condom, but know that condoms do not provde total protecton aganst STDs. On ths topc more than any other, Dr. Ruth comes off as Dr. Doof, a carnval sdeshow confdence man, who promses to show you the unknown, the eye-openng, the latest fnd. But her Fj mermad s nothng more than the body of a monkey sewn on of hs servce there. Other dsh washers came and went. No problem; there was Dave (as everyone there called hm), stuck n the dsh room workng from mornng untl the mddle of the nght Davd was always a "sure back-up" for those managers. To Davd, workng hours a week was a norm, because there was always someone who ddnt show up. But snce Lsa Mlls was posted at the BC less than two months ago, the stuaton began tochange. The questons asked by members of the audence proved wth shatterng clarty that the average undergraduate has more sexual savvy than old Ruth. The questons proved that Sewanee students are genunely thoughtful, curous, and adventurous when t comes to sex, and they were the hghlght of the nght. One brave man stood up and essentally proposed a workable soluton to premature ejaculaton n thrty seconds, he showed more humor, common sense, and magnaton than Dr. Ruth could muster durng her hour-long talk. n contrast. November Flyng to the Fnsh Mens Cross Country Ends Season Fast by Polly Bass The Mens cross-country team had a postve year and fnshed the season strongly. The team placed ffth n the SCAC conference on November 1 2th. At the NCAA Regonals on the 5th, the team actually fnshed n front of SCAC teams who placed hgher than Sewanee n the Conference champonshp meet the weekend before. Gong nto the season after graduatng some strong senors and mssng some runners due to njury and study abroad. Coach Bll Huyck was ntally skeptcal. The potental of the remanng runners soon became obvous. Junor Bryan Joyner was Sewanees top runner all season. Placng 9th ndvdually n the SCAC, Joyner says, " hoped to place n the top ten, so 1 was very pleased wth the turn out." Sophomore Holls Duncan ran extremely well ths year after recoverng from an njury he struggled wth hs freshman season. He s happy to be runnng and fnshed number two for Sewanee n Regonals, wth an mpressve personal record. Commentng on the race, Duncan says, "Everythng came together for me. Before the race, Coach always sets up a game plan wth us and says, want you to run lke ths, and dd and t worked." Lookng nto next season, Duncan has already set a goal of placng ndvdually as one of the SCACs top ten strong for Sewanee all season and show much potental. Senor Uzar smal ran the last cross country meet of hs college career at Regonal on the 12th. The Regonals course was fast and smal ran to a personal record, but stll feels hs performance at the SCAC conference meet on the 5th was hs career best. Lookng back on hs years at Sewanee, smal says, "f was to pck one person who had the most effect on me, overall at Sewanee, t would be Coach Huyck. He coaches wth a casual, but frm dscplne. Nothng s forced Coach Huyck s great!" smal feels the team was the closest group of people wth a genune enthusasm for runnng that he has seen n hs four years at Sewanee. He s very excted about the outlook for the comng years and ponted out that on both mens and womens teams the top postons are domnated by freshmen, "ts all there, they are hghly enthusastc and close knt groups of people." The SCAC better look out for Sewanee! Coach Huyck also has a postve outlook on the seasons ahead:" Were graduatng only one person, the rest s a functon of how much people stay n shape and contnue to run. f we can retan the people that enjoy what they are dong the potental s there for an expanded and mproved program." Coach Huyck summarzed hs vew of the season and the respect he has for hs runners, sayng. runners. Freshmen an Cross, Blly Ray. Expected to place 5th at best n the SCAC conference, the team was elated wth ther 3rd place fnsh, despte a small team of only 6 runners. The strong fnsh at conference gave the team confdence gong nto the larger Dvson Regonal the next weekend. The NCAA rule, whch requres fve people to score as a team, elmnated the possblty of the Sewanee women placng at Regonal. At the 1.5 mle mark, number one Sewanee runner. Katrna Nelson, suffered a severe lower leg cramp and was unable to fnsh the race. Katrna made ncredble contrbutons to the team all year through scorng and as a source of nspraton. Susan Conner, another strong freshman, was down wth a vrus and unable to run n Regonal; her support on the sdelnes allowed the four remanng runners, Ab Whte, Lz Ellngton, Mchelle Parks, and Polly Bass, each to fnsh wth personal records. Reflectng on Regonal, Mchelle Parks, a junor, sad, " was surprsed thngs turned out as well as they dd on the flatter course. People have a tendency to fall apart on more fat courses when theyre nterested n wrtng sports? used to hlls," (such as the SCAC Champonshp course the team ran on at Centre the prevous weekend). Asked about her vew of the season n general. Parks responded, "We really had a good team, many freshman, and a good season. The team was close lke a famly. We were there to support each other and were all lookng forward to track." All members have a postve feelng about the season. Lz Ellngton and Ab Whte expressed ther exctement over the 3rd place fnsh. The two contnually dscuss racng and how they can mprove ther already outstandng race tmes n the future. t seems everyone s eager for next season, a good sgn. Susan Conner, although dsapponted about not beng able to run n Regonals, commented. "ts been a great learnng experence. 1 love runnng n college." Coach Clff Afton summed t up sayng, "The season went exactly as planned. At Regonals everyone had ther fastest race ot the season and that s what we wanted to do t has been unfortunate that a few people were njured and unable to fnsh the season." The prospects look good for next year. The team s young and every runner wll be returnng The team s also excted about the possbln of runnng wth nterested prospectve students. Lookng to next year, Afton suggests. f we make the same steady mprovement next year that we have ths year well have a strong team." 12 Page 12 BACK PAGE November 22, 1994 Thanks for the Swell Revew by Besse Gantt t was great to see our own Tgers paradng on the pages of the October 24 ssue of Sports llustrated however, the reporter. Chrstan ; Stone, must have mssed the party. Who comes all the way down to Frankln County, Tennessee (m sure he wasnt on hs way to the Tennessee-Alabama game...), and then up the Mountan on Fall Party Weekend wthout jonng us for some pre-game festvtes? f Mr. Stone had so ventured, he certanly would have notced that Sewanee men don the klls and capes of ther drnkng clubs, not ther eatng clubs. Surely he can tell that at Sewanee we spend a lot more tme and get a lot more kcks out of drnkng than eatng What does Mr. Stone thnk we have n our plastc cups? Cheeros? Perhaps a sophomorc reporter n cut-offs and a Members Only jacket may feel out of place amongst the classcally talored Sewanee students, hut ths ntmdaton s hardly an excuse for reportng that Sewanee women wear "evenng gowns" to the football games. Whle we may not all be assembled for the ntal kck-off, Sewanee students love ther Tgers, and they celebrate ths sprt all week-end long. Mr. Stone reports that the Sewanee fans "were havng a swell tme even before the game." Hell yeah we were., where was he? Next lme, Mr. Stone, you are welcome to partake of our Homecomng hosptalty and have some fun wth us. Maybe then you can get a taste of the real Sewanee. ~>.M-D, U V BUT mo 7 VCN4.T, t^nt TO GVE TWM*V< TW FOOT&M-LUt^NT g 9M \NVE^K> ^et U-ZH Jwt««n*ltt»lfcT«N fb*t Wrf2(W> fas^upvh=k X^tM^-**^*- 1 bg > OPEN Mo*^S<r:30am-1 1:30pm ^T Grn dot* at 9om Shenalat WRANGLER FLY FSHNG GUDE PRME MONTANA GUEST"RANCH S SEEKNG COLLEGE STUDENTS TO WORK FOR THE ssmer OF 1995 AS WRANGLERS AT OUR CORALS OR AS FLY FSHNG GUDES UPON S?fmrS RVER.
