The pece of property that cost the most was the Unversty Inn. The EKU Foundaton bought the property located on the By-Pass from Unversty Inns, Inc. on Oct. 4, 1980 for $1.2 mllon. Leased now by the Bureau of Tranng, the 74-room motel was transferred from the EKU Foundaton to the unversty after the property was pad for. The $1.2 mllon purchase prce was to be pad n fve nstallments, wth the frst due January The unversty also owns many of the homes near campus on Unversty Drve and Summt Street. Snce 1980, the unversty has also purchased three houses on Summt Street for $171,000. The lot at 218 Summt St. was bought n 1980 for $67,000. In 1981 the lot at 200 Summt St. was purchased for S and toe lot at 236 Summt St was purchased n 1982 for a sum of $67,000. The Commonwealth of Kentucky pad for the property for the use and beneft of the unversty. "These houses were acqured because of ther close proxmty to the campus," sad Dr. Doug Whtlock, executve assstant to unversty Presdent Dr. H. Hanly Funderburk. "The houses are rented to faculty and staff members," he added. "The rent money goes nto the unversty's general fund. "Some of the houses axe rented as sngle unts and others have as many as fve apartments that are rented ndvdually," sad Whtlock. "Rent prces range from $145 per month for an apartment at 208 Summt St to $255 per month for an apartment at 330 Summt St." The rent fgures are determned by the condton and square footage of the unts and f the tenant or the unversty pays the utlty bll. ' In the future, the property could be used to expand campus. "The property was also purchased to provde area for campus expanson at a future date," Whtlock sad. "Ths s because the need may exst n the future for expanson of the present campus. And, these houses, beng so close to the campus, needed to be bought by the unversty for that purpose." Whtlock also sad, "On Unversty Drve, after t ntersects wth Kt Carson Drve, we own all the houses on the rght-hand sde of the street and all but three on the left. "We also own most of the houses on Summt Street adjacent to campus, up to the ntersecton at Madson." The unversty also owns two farms n Madson County. Baley, who has served as assstant drector of Alumn Affars for three years, has served as actng drector Baley snce hs predecessor Dr. Ron G. Wolfe began teachng full-tme n the unversty's Department of Mass Communcatons n August. The unversty Board of Regents unanmously approved Baley's appontment at ts Saturday meetng. Baley, a unversty graduate and natve of Wnchester, wll be responsble for drectng the programs and actvtes of the 60,000-member unversty Alumn Assocaton. Accordng to Baley, most people wll see lttle change n the substance of the alumn programmng. He added nvolvement, nstead of money, wll be stressed. "Money s mportant, but alumn can help n a lot of other ways as well," he sad. "We don't want the dollar sgns to overrde the other thngs graduates can do for us." Baley sad graduates are especally helpful n recrutng new students to the unversty. "There s no better tool n recrutng students than a unversty graduate," he sad. "Just havng a good postve atttude about the unversty s good." Along wth the stressng of nvolvement of alumn. Baley sad he hopes to make undergraduates more aware of alumn programs. "The thng we need to do most s to be more vsble to students whle they are on campus," he sad. "Hopefully next year we can establsh programs to make us more vsble." Jm Allender, unversty Alumn Assocaton presdent, spoke of Baley's appontment at the regents meetng. "On behalf of the alumn assocaton executve councl, I want to express to the Board of Regents our unequvcable support for Larry Baley as drector of Alumn Affars and as executve secretary of the councl," sad the Independence resdent. "Larry s a homegrown product and was the consensus choce of the search commttee," Allender sad. "I have the fullest confdence that Larry wll serve the unversty and ts 60,000-member Alumn Assocaton n a commendable manner." Wolfe, former drector of Alumn Affars, outlned qualtes needed by the new drector. "Communcaton skls, both wrtten and oral, are of equal mportance," be sad. Wolfe added organzatonal sklls are essental. "You have to be able to juggle thngs: to know what's gong on," Wolfe sad. "You're responsble for keepng up wth 50,000 people and plannng programs. At the same tme you have to try to rase money to pay the blls." Wolfe sad he feels Baley possesses the trats necessary to be a successful drector. "I thnk he s really qualfed and I wsh hm the best," he sad. "We all have lmtatons, but I thnk he realzes hs and s capable of workng around those. I thnk he was a good choce." Baley has worked n the unversty's alumn affars department and publc nformaton offce for the past 16 years.. roval ston Baley receved a bachelor of arts degree n socal scence from the unversty n In 1979, he completed a master's degree n hstory. He and hs wfe Ann have one daughter, Kate and resde n Rchmond. By Terr Martn Edtor The Board of Regents has OK'd a resoluton to ssue more than $9.99 mllon n revenue bonds for fundng campus buldngs. The consoldated educatonal buldng revenue bonds wll be used to fnance eght on-campus projects. Of the eght projects, the most expensve nvolves the unversty's communcatons network. An estmated $3 mllon upgradng of the unversty's communcatons wrng s planned to mprove telephone and computer servce. Another project nvolves the replacement or repar of ar condtonng unts on campus at a cost of $2 mllon. The thrd most expensve tem nvolves the Begley Buldng. Plans nclude correctng water leakage problems, mprovng lghtng and seatng and mulrng the buldng more accessble to the handcapped. Ths project wll cost about $1.5 mllon. Other projects nclude work on ppng systems n the Memoral Scence and Foster buldngs. Roof and envronmental mprovements are planned for the Moore Buldng, whle Martn Hall wndows and concrete awnngs wll be repared or replaced. Also, some hot water heaters on campus wll be replaced. The mprovements wll total $9 mllon of the $9.99 mllon n revenue bonds. The remanng ncome from the bonds wll be used for depost to debt servce reserve and the cost of bond ssuance. Accordng to Earl Baldwn, vce presdent of Busness Affars, the bond ndenture requres that at any one tme, at least one year's annual debt servce must be on depost. Currently the annual debt servce condton requres the unversty to have at least $2,910,685 on depost. After the sale of the new "Seres M " bonds, that number wll jump to $3,766,401. The addtonal $900,000 from the bond ssuance wll cover the depost requrement, prntng of the bonds and legal fees, Baldwn sad. The bond counsel for the Seres M bond ssuance s Wyatt, Tarrant and Combs of Lousvlle. Baldwn sad when bonds are to be ssued, the Fnance and Admnstraton Cabnet n Frankfort chooses bond counsel for the unversty. "Ths s the frst tme they've served as our bond counsel." Baldwn sad. In Saturday's meetng. Baldwn told the regents the plan s for bds to be receved untl 10 am. on Nov. 5. wth the delvery of the bonds and recept of the funds tentatvely scheduled for Nov. 20. Baldwn sad bds are expected to come from large bond bouses such as E.F. Hutton. "They buy all the bonds, then resell them." he sad. The bonds wll be dated Nov and wll mature serally on May 1 of each year from 1989 untl The sale of the bonds wll be handled by the unversty's fscal agent, Frst Kentucky Securtes Corp. n Frankfort. The board's executve commttee, consstng of Henry Stratum, John M. Keth Jr.. Thomas Harper. Robert Begley and Dr. Robert Warren, wll meet at 10:30 am. on Nov. 5 to revew the bds. Accordng to Charles Hay, unversty archvst, the last such ssuance of bonds occurred n The revenue bonds fnanced the constructon of the law enforcement complex. 3 ^ - I he bastern Progress. Thursday, October Perspectve Tsrr Martn Denns.. -Edtor Managng edtor Staff artat 'Hgher' week adds nothng Whose dea was Natonal Hgher Educaton Week anyway? Wth the theme "Educaton s Freedom," Natonal Hgher Educaton Week has passed by wthout notce. The unversty s to be one of thousands of Amercan schools whch wll "observe" hgher educaton week. All we've observed ths week s a few students handng out stckers and a banner on the Powell Buldng. Whch leads us to ask what the week s all about n the frst place. We're clueless. Sure unversty presdents make statements for press releases and local offcals ssue proclamatons, but s that t? Is that all of hgher educaton week? I'erhaps t should be called Natonal Hgher Educaton Weak - for that's what t s. We've seen lttle ths week to nspre, excte, motvate or even Seres' prortes focus on profts By Steve Florence The World Seree, baseball's annual post-season match-up between the wnners of the Natonal League and the Amercan League, turned nto a prme tme televson seres ths year. Why? Ths queston pops nto mnd when one dscovers that no day games were played n ths year's seres. The answer was clear: money. By playng the seres at nght, the networks and the baseball establshment could make more money. The games, all startng at 8:25 p.m. or 8:30 p.m., took place rght n the mddle of prme tme televson hours, the hours whch carry the hghest prce tag n terms of advertsng rates. Just lke football's Super Bowl, the World Seres s a network's dream. The network wth the rghts to a World Seres reaps handsome profts by sellng ad slots durng tmes the games are on televson. NBC would not have purchased the rghts to the World Seres ths year unless they thought vewers would watch the games, thereby stll allowng them to make a buck from advertsng. Advertsng rates for slots n "Famly Tes" are among the hghest n televson due to the show's hgh rankng. NBC surely had to charge advertsers a hgher rate for the World Seres to come out even wthout ths show n ther Thursday nght lne-up. Steve Florence s a senor journalsm major and a Progress staff wrter. Wth every game beng played at nght ths year, somethng was mssng from ths World Seres. People used to look forward to a lesurely Saturday afternoon n front of the tube watchng the World Seres. Ths year, the fans unable to go to the games had to stay up past 11 p.m. to vew an entre game. Also, youngsters were only able to watch a few nnngs of the games untl ther bedtme rolled around. Early work schedules caused some adults to also mss the seres. Was a network's proft more mportant than many fans beng able to watch a complete game? No. The plan to play the games only at nght was just another network ploy to make money. Expandng the two league champonshp seres to the best of seven nstead of leavng them at the beet of fve was another money-makng ploy. It really shows where prortes are today. Forget about the feelngs of many baseball fans and just concentrate on makng more money. Next year, f the network World Seres rghts decdes to have another prme tme seree, the fans should retalate. Let the networks take a proft nose dve. Let a majorty speak; not everyone can stay up late seven nghts just to allow the televson ndustry to make another dollar. Gudelnes for letters to the edtor The Eastern Progress encourages ts laade to wrte a letter to the edtor on any topc. Letters submtted for publcaton should be addressed to the newspaper and must contan the author's address and telephone Letters must nclude the author's sgnature. Carbon copes, photocopes and letters wth llegble sgnature* wll not be accepted. The Eastern Progress uaee ts Judgment to determne f a sjs BOSIOUS or n poor taste the rght to reject bore us wth hgher educaton. The fact s we've seen nothng at all - from nether students nor nstructors - that makes ths week dfferent from any other. It's obvous that many nstructors couldn't care less about the week. It hasn't been mentoned n lectures ths week. It s sgnfcance, f any, hasn't been dscussed. And obvously, many students, ncludng ourselves, are unaware of the week's meanng. We value ths nsttuton and the educaton t provdes, but as far as the week goes, admnstrators have shown us nothng to make us apprecate t any more. Although the dea of honorng hgher educaton s an acceptable one, planners never really followed through. Natonal Hgher Educaton Week s just lke any other - nothng specal. Authentcty key to costume Progress rrogress photo/tom pnoo/rotn Penegor rene) Playng dress-up and pretend have been two of my favorte games snce I can remember. Granted, I don't have the tme, or permsson to carry these games out anymore, except on Halloween. Many look at the nternatonal holday as chld's play. Well, maybe t s, but t's just aa much fun for adults as t s for chldren. How often throughout our lves do we have the opportunty to play make beleve, to take on a lfelong dol's character wthout rdcule? Not very often for most of us, unless we are nvolved n theatrcal productons. Halloween s my favorte holday, only second to Chrstmas. I take the "opportunty" very serously when Notons Darenda Denns selectng the character and costume of my temporary dentty. I fnd selectng the perfect costume exctng and thought provokng. We no longer have dorms or dorm drectors, we have resdence halls and Resdence Hall Drectors "Admnstrators/Counselors." Dorm comes from the Latn root "dormat" whch means sleep. It s a place to meet people, attend hall functons, and a place where students can call home. Case Hall works hard to dfferentate between the two and you resort to callng the place that most of us call home a dull lfeless place to sleep. The organzaton that helps wth resdence hall problems s the Resdence Hall Assocaton not the Dorm Assocaton. Beverly Grton Case Hall staff assstant Tax extorts dollars I must vehemently protest your edtoral poston of supportng the county payroll tax. It should be retted, from Tax addresses county's need to 'Tax addresses extortonst's greed.' Your front page story neglected the tem about magstrate Farrs Parks threat to trple the property taxes f ctzens rejected the 1 percent earnngs rp-off. Otherwse, the artcle was more nformatve than most. The county servces n queston have almost all been proven vald, both from the standpont of assess- ng a need, but also from commandng n creatve communtes the actual market whch nduces the prvate sector to provde these needs effcently and wth equtable prcng. As for the publc lbrary, the need has not yet been proven to me. I lke books as much as the next guy, but I prefer to buy my own books and to gve to my own favorte chartes and welfare peons. Both EKU and Berea College have exceptonal lbrares, whch they both clam to make avalable to the county ctzenry. Many countes have fewer lbrares than our's does. The man pont to be consdered here s the Mp servce to the word publc. The problem wth our dstrbuton of lbrary servces s that the county ctzens often don't feel comfortable comng onto our campus to do ther readng, research, or to check out books. But Correctons In last week's Progress a story about the payroll tax provded ncorrect nformaton concernng mnsters. Mnsters are excluded from the tax exempton, so they are ncluded n the tax. Apathy vctorous n local electons In other words By Jame Baker "I don't caret" "I don't know any of them, so why should I vote?" How many of us can say we have heard or used these excuses for not votng? Maybe we feel we are excused from votng because we are college students and socety doesn't expect us to vote. More than lkely the reason people don't vote s because they just plan and sknply don't care. Currently there are 28,350 regstered voters n Madson County and 2,000 of these are unversty students. In May's prmary, only between 200 and 300 students voted. Two weeks ago the unversty sponsored an electon for Homecomng Queen and 1,284 students voted. The stumblng block becomes the fact the unversty s composed of Jame Baker s a junor journalsm major and a Progress staff wrter. over 10,000 students. The queston arses, "Why so few voters?" Frst of all, apathy may be the culprt. For those who don't know the meanng of apathy, t s defned by Webster as beng' 'a lack of nterest or concern." A second answer could be a lack of nformaton, but the problem wth ths answer s that prmares are held n the same months each electon year. Ads, posters and rado spots also announced the campus electon, so ths answer could be ruled out. Next month s another electon. Perhaps students wll change recent trends and fnally take tme to voce ther opnons through votng. (Contned from Page 2) Letters mss pont I was satsfed wth acton taken by The Yogurt Shoppe, but the letters n the last week's Progress smply mssed the pont. To those people that "don't look at the color of the characters... just at the characterstcs," you are to be commended, but the bottom lne s that the Yogurt ad was offensve to black students on ths campus, Rchmond s not advanced enough for both blacks and whtes to share and enjoy such an ad when blacks are stll remnded that they are black. Black students are not "nsecure about themselves, and certanly do not have to read between the lnes to fnd somethng dscrmnatory.'' Corner Pyle and the Beverly Mller Coffey Hllblles are entertanng, but to face a stereotype that blacks have tred to get away from for over two hundred years, at a "unversty" where postve atttudes and open mnds should run rampant, but nstead are stagnant, t a dsturbng. Young people who feel that racsm s over do not have to deal wth t. Annoy lngy enough, t s alve and well. The authors of last weeks artcles were obvously not of Easterns black mnorty. 6 The Eastern Progress. Thursday. October Campus lvng Weekend away creates scene for murder By Lauren WUloughby Staff wrt* "I've never been a corpse." sad Jame Hamon. "I hope to be one." Hamon s a unversty conference planner who has an organzatonal ablty for creatng cot pace. She and her frends have schemed and commtted several murders. Hamon does not do the drty work herself. "All I do s the plannng," she sad. "Plannng and plottng are what I do best." Hamon has had a faoanaton for murder mysteres snce she was a chld and the facsnaton stll contnues nto her adult years. "I read murder mysteres constantly. I started out wth Sherlock Holmes." Hamon and Ann KlkeUy, an Englsh professor at Transylvana Unversty, are the core of Mystery Ink, a "travelng theatre troupe' that seta up n a hotel or a lodge for a weekend of cloak and daggers. Hamon became nvolved wth Mystery Ink over a year ago. "I found out about t at another unversty and wanted to do t." The company s sponsored by the Kentucky State Parks and gves ts macabre performances n state parks. Mystery Ink travels ths weekend to Kenlake State Resort Park, whch Hamon sad s beautful, secluded and "a nce place for a murder." At least one person wll de, f all goes accordng to plan. "There's always the possblty the murderer 'there's always the possblty the murderer won't be satsfed wth one death.' won't be satsfed wth one death," sad Hamon. The cast of Mystery Ink usually ncludes seven actors from a larger group of regulars. Many n the cast come from theater groups n Lexngton. One of the actors s Doug Burnham, a unversty socology professor. Hamon s the group's producer and KlkeUy s the wrter. Hamon sad she s the logstcs person; she makes sure of all the props and entrances. "There's a lot of jugglng behnd the scenes that I have to do," sad Hamon. Both Hamon and KlkeUy act. "I'm an off-the-wall muscan, a beatnk," sad Hamon. "I gaze off nto space a lot." "Ann plays a tap-dancng Romanan detectve," sad Hamon. Detectve Scartrace taps her way nto nterrogatons wth suspects who are made up of both guests and actors. Mystery Ink performs for about 46 avd mystery buffs, who pay 1120 each for a weekend's housng, meals and mystery. Hamon sad they attract a loyal followng; many of the people keep comng back for more. Mystery Ink never commtts the same murder twce, Hamon sad. Each murder takes sx months of preparaton. -Jame Hamon Sometme durng the weekend an actor "dea" The (wests' job s to fnd out who klled hm and why. "We want to pass out a lot of red herrngs," sad Burnham. The guests are brought together for the major "scenes" to be played out. Burnham sad guests usually gather for dnners and moves. In honor of Halloween, Kenlake murder wll feature a costume ball and a hayless-rde just lke a hayrde wthout the hay, Burnham sad The guests dvde nto several groups, but there s an actor n each group and of course, no one knows who the actors are. Guests often act as f they were n the cast themselves. "We have people who pretend they're Colombo and Mss Marple,' Hamon sad. "One of them came as Inspector Fouryards from Scotland Yard He wore a klt the whole tme." "You'd be suprsed at how strange the guests are," she sad The actors try to blend n as much as possble. Much of the fun for the guests s fgurng out who s actually n the cast whch s made dffcult by all the zany guests who show up, Hamon sad Hamon sad one guest's real name was Patty Wack. "People thought she was a suspect." Hamon sad the guests who know the actors are play-along "It's a game adults play-pretend" The actors just don't play ther parts, they lve them. Burnham sad from Frday evenng untl noon on Sunday he s another person. "It's exhaustng, actually, to have to be some person who s dfferent from you. The hard part s stayng the character all the tme," he sad. "You mngle. You have to do a lot of mprovsaton." The guests are suspectng everybody, he sad "You're always observed." "Ths tme I am Leon Daley," sad Burnham. "I am a bad, abrasve, obnoxous country snger." Burnham sad he wl break nto song on request. He has prepared Patsy dnes. "I Fall to Peces." Ths week s the fnal week of rehearsal for the cast, Hamon sad "We just get nto character." Guests who guess "whodunt" receve a dscount on the next Mystery Ink weekend Hamon sad Hamon sad the company wll have a weekend at Cumberland Park n the sprng. She added t would be fun to do one for the unversty at Maywoods. The troupe also hres out for prvate partes. If you can afford over $1,000, they can accomodate you wth a one-nght mn-murder. "It's great fun. You're playng to a captve audence," Hamon sad. Photo llustraton/chrs Nblock Was t Mrs. Peacock n the conservatory? By Jenny Chambers Staff wrter The dark, deserted country road leads the way to the haunted forest's drveway. Twstng and turnng up the hll, the drveway wanders through msty, lwply-hangnfr trees that foretell the horrors to be found behnd the pcnc shelter at the top. "I know they heard me scream," sad a survvor emergng from the forest. Percng musc echoes through the park as lght shnes weakly from the ste of the forest's entrance, the pcnc shelter. Groups of jttery people laugh nervously and talk wth shrll voces as they awat ther gude's return from the depths of the forest. Monsters n the forest nclude members of the Lambda Ch Alpha fraternty and Kappa Alpha. There are also sorortes nvolved wth the forest such as Alpha Delta P. Delta Zeta and Ch Omega. One of the monsters, Gary Edln, 19, a member of Lambda Ch fraternty, recruted hs fraternty brothers and the sorortes to be monsters n the forest. "Some nghts I am a monster," sad Edln, a sophomore pre-vet ma- jor from Lousvlle. "People relate forests more to ghosts and monsters." On the nghts when Edln s not a monster, he leads groups through the forest wth a flashlght Accord' ng to Moretz, each group goes wth a gude. The pathway at the trp's begnnng s lghted wth grnnng Jack-O-Lanterns. As you venture farther nto the forest, more and more fleshy, bloody or green and black faces materalze from out of the darkness, grnnng hdeously as they lurch n your drecton. As you run screamng forward thnkng you are escapng from the frghtful faces, green, garbled hands holdng roarng chan saws brush up aganst your legs. Branches flung over the slppery path catch your feet, freezng you n poston and causng you to be terrorzed longer by the roarng chan saws and creepy faces. "We have people who turn around and refuse to go," sad Moretz. "You can't see a thng untl the swamp monsters pop up It makes t more scary when t's mstng a bt." Moretz sad approxmately 2,000 people ventured through the forest last year. Moretz addeu t went really well last year. 'Ths s why we contnued t ths year." She sad t not only was a good fund-raser but t was also a good recreaton actvty. Moretz sad t s hard to have a fund-raser that wll rase money as well as get people nvolved n the entertanment sde of t. "People do come and have a really good tme," sad Moretz. She sad ths year marks the forest's second year as a fund-raser for Rchmond's Parks and Recreaton Department. "Many years ago a cvc organzaton held a haunted forest," Moretz sad. "We decded to pck up on t and use t as a fund-raser." "A lot of people who come here and come out of the forest alve say ths s one of the scarest," Moretz sad. "One of the thngs that I thnk s extra fun s that t s dfferent every nght." She sad because the monsters are dfferent each nght they each have ther own dfferent acts and skts they perform as well as dfferent types of make-up they use. Edln sad people sometmes look to hm for protecton when he gudes them through the forest. "They won't actually hold your hand," he sad. "But they reach for you." The forest opened last Frday and wll contnue every evenng through Nov. 2. The forest may close on rany evenngs for safety reasons, but local rado statons wll carry the message. She also sad the tour gudes are practcng better safety precautons. "One of the frst thngs the tour gudes do s to talk to the people before they go n the forest and ask them to behave," sad Moretz. She sad there has only been one accdent and the person only receved a small bump on the head. She sad they have frst aders as well as frst ad equpment everywhere. The Haunted Forest s located at Camp Catalpa off U.S. 52 toward Irvne. Tombstones wth the words "Haunted Forest" and "Catalpa" mark the way to the forest. 9 8 -- The Eastern Progress, Thursday, October 30, 1986 Arts/Entertanment Studos offer feld experence By UH Coonej Staff wrter lghts, camera, acton! The unversty's dvson of televson, located on the frst floor of the Perkns Buldng, doesn't qute measure up to the bg networks, but t does have some productons of ts own. The dvson of televson and rado has two TV studos whch are both 40 by 60 feet, sad Dr. Frederck Kolloff. drector of the dvson. "He n-studo cameras are bg and they are only used here, but the feld producton equpment s moble," sad Kolloff. "The equpment are the shoulder cameras our people use to tape football games or anywhere on locaton." The n-studo programs produced by the dvson are "Town ^Hal," "Issues and Optons," Encounters," "The Roy Kdd Show" and "EKU Sport Lght." Dr. Paul Blanchard, a professor of government at the unversty, s the host of "Town Hall." The Town Hall talk show s a 30-mnute sesson on whch Blanchard and a guest panel ntervew a person or people nvolved n state or local government. The Town Hall show s bascally concerned wth laws or peces of legslaton that affect the state or Madson County. "Issues and Optons," hosted by Dr. Elzabeth Praas. an assocate professor of journalsm, s also a 30-mnute talk show. On "Issueand Optons," Praas ntervews people who have local nterest or who deal wth anythng that s an ssue n Madson County. Praas has ntervewed local teachers, county attorneys and magstrates. "Encounters," whch s taped and run entrely by students, s an ntervew program that features general ssues. Ron Smth, host of the show and rado producer for the dvson. The League of Women Voters uses the studos twce a year for a show featurng the canddates answerng key questons from members of the press and publc. The studo recently televsed a lve telethon from the Madson County Hgh School. The booster club was tryng to rase money for academcs. The dvson of televson and rado also runs a vdeo tape servce for the unversty, sad Kolloff. A faculty member can call n and ask for a partcular tape to be run at a certan tme. "It mght be a NOVA program taped off publc broadcastng or a news program whch s taped off the ar to play back n a classroom," he sad. Although the studos seem to be the heart of the productons. Jack McDowell, a televson producer at the dvson, sad feld producton at the unversty s what televson s all about. Besdes tapng home football games, McDowell sad the dvson has done feld trps for marketng and busness classes. "It s a TV tour through a large company lke Krogers or Begley's because t s easer to take the tape to the classroom than t s to take the class through a large company or warehouse." McDowell sad only 10 to 20 percent of the work s done nsde and the rest s done n the feld or outsde the studo. Keth Combs, a producton assstant and former student at the unversty, agrees wth McDowell n sayng most of the producton work s done n the feld because t s easer to go to the people. "Events that are taped lve and on locaton are more professonal and I thnk t's smpler to brng the camera to the people or place." Combs sad the unversty's local access channel s 6 and t s on the sr fve nghts a week for fve hours per nght. The ar tmes are from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. A dary schedule of programs appears on Channel 6 when a program s not n progress. "So ths s a good opportunty to expose students and others to what we do here at Perkns and to the musc department" "We chose to have the concert at mealtme for those people who usually just stay around the campus durng lunch and for those who work downtown so they can have the tme to get here and back durng ther lunch hour," sad Bagby. "We would Kke people to come and eat ther lunch here and enjoy some good musc at the same tme. "Ths s a good chance for people who can't go to the musc programs at nght to enjoy some good musc" Bagby sad. "And t gves musc students a chance to perform pror to a rectal." Ths weekend, by the way, started out wth partes on Tuesday, s gong to be super! The bewtchng season leads us all to our more creatve self. The partes are n hgh abundance and you can be anythng or anyone you want. The most fun at one of these partes s to see what creaton your frends have tred to orgnate. You wll see prepstors dressed aa bag lades and punkers dressed as prepsters. It s smply too wld. Wth Halloween actually fallng on Frday, many of the partes ted nto the unversty wll be held through the remander of the week and those prvate off-campus ones wll contnue throughout the weekend. If you plan to be n town for the weekend, you must go downtown for the festvtes. Each year the bars wll hold costume contests and have specally-planned festvtes for those n costume. Some establshments even drop cover charges for those dressed n costume. However, remember all precautons should be taken f you plan to drnk. The law wll be out as normal and won't be dong any treatng. Don't drnk and drve. Another suggeston to keep n mnd: Stay away from those offduty bartenders. These people can and do get you n trouble every tme. However, f you do have frends n ths feld just be sure you know all about "The Andy Grffth Show" trva. I'm sure ths weekend wll be qute a challenge for many. However, the true-blue trck or treat fans make t a game each year to create an orgnal costume. The best of luck s wshed to all those partcpatng n the festvtes. After attendng a costume party already ths week, I have managed to come away wth a prze for the second consecutve year. Someone of my experence n costume desgn should charge to assst costume shoppers, but I wll gladly donate any suggestons that mght help you. I am probably only beng so knd, snce I wll not get to attend aa many partes as I dd last year. If you are n the mood to travel and have any frends attendng Morehead State Unversty, look them up. 11 10 -- The Eastern Progress, Thursday, October 30, 1986 Georga stops spkers By MkeMaraee Sports edtor They were on the verge of ther bggest wn of the season, but the volleyball Colonels were a dollar short n ther effort to upset regonal powerhouse Georga. They seemed to have full control of the match at more than one pont, but they just couldn't hold on. The Colonels fell 7-15, , 15-9 to the Bulldogs Sunday at Weaver Gymnasum. Wth the loss, the Colonels fell to 17-7 overall. Georga, ranked fourth n the NCAA South Regon, s Senor Sarah Ewy, who posted a.483 httng percentage aganst the Bulldogs, sad a wn would have been nce, but even n defeat, there was somethng to be ganed. "I thnk we realzed we're at the same level as teams n the top 20," she sad. Coach Ger Polvno sad a wn would have been a tremendous boost to the program, but they weren't hurt badly by the loss. "We dd the next best thng to beatng them." she sad. "We took them to fve games." Actually, ft. was the Bulldogs who came from behnd to take the Colonels to a ffth game. After controllng the frst game, the Colonels had to come from behnd to stay alve n game two. But that comeback was cut short, not by any outstandng play, but by the words of the offcals. Wth Georga leadng the jffcala detected an llegal substtuton made by the Colonels. The same reserve was substtuted for two dfferent players n the same game, rhat s not permssble n volleyball. Consequently, Georga was lwarded a pont that just happenjd to be the game-wnner. Ewy sad the play cut off some of.he Colonels' momentum, but t wasn't a fatal blow. "I thnk t took away a lttle, but not to the pont that t cost us the match." she sad. Sports Progress photo/tom Penegor Mary Granger, left, and Deb Wnkler go to the net for a block. The Colonels came from behnd to wn the thrd game, but the Bulldogs overcame a 5-0 defct n game four to force a ffth game. Notable statstcs ncluded Cathy Brett's four servce aces. Angela Boykns and Deb Wnkler combned for 50 defensve dgb. In a Frday match, the Colonels downed vstng Western Kentucky The Colonels must now contnue ther efforts to mprove ther regonal rankng and earn an atlarge bd to the NCAA tournament. "Ths sn't the end for us," Polvno sad. "We have set the schedule up. to gve us several chances at the at-large bd." The next opportunty comes wth Saturday's match wth Texas A&M, ranked 18th natonally last week. Ewy sad the scenaro s the same as n the Georga match. The Colonels must beat the Agges or take them to fve games. She sad a sweep of an upcomng weekend at North Carolna and a wn at Mam (Oho) are also essental for the team. Ewy sad the Colonels are earnng the respect of larger schools. "I thnk they look up to Eastern," she stated. "We're just as good as all those bg unverstes." "There's a lot of pressure," Polvno sad "The kds are dealng wth t ncely. Colonels shut out U of L By Mke Marsee Sports edtor Accordng to legend some days you get the bear, and some days the bear gets you. Such was the case for the unversty's feld hockey team last week, as they soundly defeated Lousvlle on the road, then returned home to drop a par of weekend games. The Colonels routed U of L 8-0 for ther second wn of the season over the Cardnals. Two weeks earler, they had won 2-0 at home. Coach Lynne Harvel sad the game at U of L fell on one of those days when everythng seemed to be gong rght. "There's just some nghts when you do no wrong." she sad. "That's the way t was Wednesday nght." Harvel also sad the Colonels just seemed to have ther game runnng smoothly. "We just played super hockey," she stated "Some days you just play lke that." Three players each scored two goals for the Colonels. Kelly Kerman, Heather Shockey and Tammy Vrooman all found the goal twce. Carol Van Wnkle and Mara Vertone also contrbuted goals to the effort. The bear came back to haunt the Colonels Saturday at Hood Feld, as they were defeated 1-0 n double overtme by Southwest Mssour. Accordng to Harvel. condtons for the game were atrocous. By the end of the game, the feld was thck wth mud and standng water. Southwest Mssour's only goal came after both the offensve player and the Colonels' goalkeeper had fallen n the mud. The SMSU player then smply pushed the ball nto the goal wth her stck. The condton of the feld forced the cancellaton of a later game between SMSU and James Madson. The Colonels' Sunday game wth Tenns team ends fall slate Progress staff report Two Colonels won the consolaton round n ther sngles brackets as the unversty's women's tenns team concluded ts fad season last weekend at the Lousvlle Invtatonal Tournament. Tna Cate and Tna Peruzz, the No. 5 and 6 sngles seeds, both won two matches after losng ther frst match to take consolaton-round wns n the double-elmnaton brackets. Cate lost to Dana Hleman of host Lousvlle, then defeated Morehead State's Paula Meyer and U of L's Jll Peterson. Peruzz lost her opener to U of L's Mchelle Dyer, then won over teammate Becke Mark and Laura Talbot of Murray State. No. 2 seed Pam Wse and No. 4 seed Trac Parrella faled to wn a match n ther brackets. Dee Cannon, the No. 3 sngles player, was forced to default from both sngles and doubles play because of an njury. James Madson was moved to Berea College. JMU, ranked 10th n the naton at the tme of the game, dealt the Colonels a 7-0 whppng. Harvel sad her team was "very lackadascal" at game tme, but they quckly realzed they were capable of playng wth JMU. "We really played a pretty good frst half." Harvel sad. The Colonels traled 1-0 at the half. But JMU domnated the second half, scorng sx tmes to roll to an easy vctory. Harvel sad Kerman played an outstandng game n a losng effort. "She gave a clnc on cuttng," Harvel sad of the freshman reserve. The Colonels, now 9-3-2, play ther fnal regular season game Saturday at Klkns, W. Va., aganst Davs and Elkns CoUege. The followng weekend, they wll host fve teams n the Mdwest Independent Champonshps at Hood Feld. Because of Cannon's njury. Wse teamed up wth Peruzz at the No. 3 doubles poston. They defeated Meyer and Patte Van Fleet of Morehead n ther openng match n straght sets, but then lost to a team from Oho State. Cate and Parrella were swept at the No. 2 doubles slot The No. 1 sngles players and doubles teams played a round-robn format durng the weekend. Top sngles seed Laura Hesselbrock defeated Morehead's Kathy Lamport 3-6, 7-6, 6-3. However, she was defeated by the top seeds from the other three competng schools. Hesselbrock joned Mark at the No. 1 doubles poston for the Colonels, and the par was swept by ther four opponents. The Colonels wll have some tme off before they begn practcng for the sprng season, whch begns Feb. 6. The Colonels placed behnd Kentucky n the four-team meet held Saturday at Arlngton. The women posted 47 ponts, whle UK had 28. Tennessee was thrd wth 61 ponts and Lousvlle was fourth wth 116. Tennessee's Alsa Harvey, the NCAA champon n the 1,600-meter run, won the 6,000-meter event wth a tme of 16 mnutes, 46.8 seconds. Pam Ragtn of the Colonels was second at 17:01. followed by UK's Lsa Bradng, the NCAA 3,000-meter champon, at 17:08. Colonel runner Allson Kotouch was ffth wth a tme of 17:14. The men's team placed fourth wth 101 ponts n the 6-mle race. Tennessee won wth only 20 ponts. Rchard Ede of UK was the top ndvdual wth a tme of 24:60.1. The top-fnshng Colonel was Orsse Bumpus, 21st wth a tme of 26:07. Tm Moore placed 31st wth a tme of 26:66, followed by Jm Progress photo/rodney Ross Tama Clare leads the pack n Saturday's meet. The teams wll compete Saturday n the Oho Valley Conference champonshps at Murfreesboro, Tenn. Mddle Tennessee s the host. Erdmann sad he expects the Colonel to compete wth Akron and Murray State for the ttle. He sad Akron, Murray and Austn Peay are the favortes n the men's meet. Fve ted for league lead Progress staff report The Oho Valley Conference football race became tghter than ever after Saturday's acton. Fve teams are ted for frst place wth four games to play. Akron, Austn Peay, Morehead State, Murray State and the Colonels all sport 2-1 league records. Mddle Tennessee and Youngs town State are 1-2, whle Tennessee Tech s 0-3. Much of the confuson resulted from Akron's 30-7 homecomng wn over prevously undefeated Morehead. Zps' talback Mke Clark rushed for 199 yards n 19 carres to go over the 1,000-yard mark for the thrd year n a row as Akron put an end to Morehead's dreams of a perfect season. In other games, Jeff Cesarone's two touchdown passes helped propel Western Kentucky to a Assstant coach Doug Bonk sad the Colonel men must stay together n the race to have a shot at frst place. "The key to ther success s havng the top fve guys fnsh as close together as possble," he sad. Men score 232 n scrmmage Offense ruled as the Maroon team defeated the Gray team Saturday n the men's basketball team's frst ntrasquad scrmmage. For the Grays, Curts Stephen and Ben Phllps scored 26 ponts each. Stephens also had 16 rebounds and 13 asssts. The Eastern Progress, Thursday, October 30, I I Alumn beneft most from Homecomng There s no feelng qute lke the one you get the day after the concluson of a bg event. "The Day After" n ths case was Sunday followng Homecomng. Whle many students were worshpng tolets, avodng all vsble lght and wonderng why they were an hour early for the day's events, I was battlng sore feet, major job burnout and general exhauston. Let me tell you about t. In last week's Progress, a fellow columnst and I mplored students to lnger on campus and take n the events of Homecomng weekend. As soon as the paper went to press Wednesday nght, I wondered f. just maybe, we mght have overblown ths thng a tny bt. Was Homecomng all we cracked t up to be? I mmedately decded to devote ths week's space to that queston, and I kept t n mnd durng the hoopla of the weekend. So what's the result? I'm very sorry to say that I was not mpressed. If forced to attach a letter grade to the entre event, I would probably tag t wth a flat, bland "C." The Thursday nght bonfre drew over 200 people to the cow pastures of Stateland, a good crowd by Out n left feld Mke Marsee unversty standards. But keep n mnd the bg attracton was a drawng for a trp to Daytona Beach, Pla. Frday's bg event was the return of the Homecomng dance, a semformal affar costng S3 a head. I can dance (sort of), but becomng sem-formal to do so s not my dea of a wonderful evenng. From the appearance of the campus and the town that evenng, there were many others who shared those feelngs. Saturday, of course, was the bg day, but t raned on our parade. Despte that, the parade was probably the hghlght of the weekend. Then there was a football game. Granted, t was about as wrtng as a 21-pont wn can be, and t offered ts share of bg plays and moments. But to label t specal just because t s the Homecomng game s a bt of a farce. Wth the excepton of the pregame coronaton and a bref appearance by former unversty band and chorus members, t was busness as usual. Just another football Saturday n Rchmond. We ddn't even get decent weather for t. Of course, there were other Homecomng events lmted to smaller groups and far too numerous to menton. But let me just say the whole affar left me feelng a bt empty. Call me a pessmst, a socal recluse or just a dsllusoned kd. I'm a lttle of all those thngs. But as a frend ponted out, whle students are here, they can't wat to get out. Once they are out n the real world, they jump at the chance to come back. So Homecomng, for all ts student-related actvtes, s stll frst and foremost for the old grads. I am certan many of them enjoyed takng n all the changes on campus and seeng old frends they hadn't seen or even thought of n years. And when I get the chance to return someday. 111 be the frst one on the bus and ready to rde.* * Colonels freeze Penguns (Contnued from Page One) he sad. "They had all the momentum gong n ther favor." Kdd added. "That gave us a spark." That was all the Colonels needed to get the engnes gong. On the ensung drve, Bohler scored hs frst collegate touchdown on a 6-yard run. After the game, Bohler sad he felt good. "I felt even better when I ran across the lne," he stated. Bohler, a converted defensve back, sad there was less responsblty as a talback, but he realzed the mportance of a talback wth ths team. Kdd sad he was glad Bohler was able to perform well n relef of Crawford. "He mpresses me every tme I see hm play," Kdd sad. "That's gong to gve us two talbacks back." After Bohler's score, Crawford scored from a yard out and Mke Cadore ran 26 yards on the reverse play for another sx ponts and the Colonels held a lead at halt-tme. After a Pengun feld goal n the Custom Duals $9995 (Some pckups) Lfetme Brake Specal 1 thrd quarter, Whtaker threw a 41-yard strke to Angulo to put the Colonels up Ther fnal ponts came wth 12:06 to play on a 17-yard Crawford run.
