The Assocaton has been around snce 1965 when they began ther career n Los Death Clams Eastern Teacher Thomas Frederck Man, 38, nstructor of musc at Eastern ded Frday n Lexngton after a long llness. He s survved by hs wfe, Mrs. Alce Man and a son, Tmothy. Man was born n Colorado, and hs parents presently resde n Lamar, Colorado: Before comng to Eastern n 1971, he taught at Mansfeld State ; College n Mansfeld, Pennsylvana. A commttee has been formed to look nto the possblty of ntatng a scholarshp n hs name. Any person nterested n contrbutng funds should contact Dr.. George Muns. charman of the musc department. 1 Angeles. n 1966 they nade numerous televson appearances and began the frst of a seres of concerts' at the then unknown Fllmore West n San Francsco. n 1968 more concert tours followed along wth more televson appearances on programs ncludng the Smothers Brothers, Ed Sullvan, and Johnny Carson's Tonght Show. n he followng year, Paramount Pctures contracted hem to do the flm score for "Goodbye Columbus". Of late, they have been playng a hghly popular seres of engagements at he LA. Greek Theater. Jacke DeShannon s no stranger to the pop musc scene cther. She began her career sngng gospel songs (both her parents were muscans and sngers), at her home n Hazel, Kentucky. From there she went on to Los Angeles, dong demos wth Leon Russel, the Byrds, Bob Dylon and Randy Newman. Her frst bg ht was the Burt Bacharach song "What the World Needs Now s Love". Subsequently she relaeaed another sngle to become a ht: "Put a Lttle Love n Your Heart". She's also dong well on he charts now wth "Vanlla Olay". - Jacke's knd of musc has been descrbed as some of the most unque and vared n modern musc. n Rollng Stone, Stephen Holden sad: "'ve always lked Jacke.DeShannon's sngng-a gently throatcatchng, but never maudln style--...as close as you can get to defnng the manstream n contemporary musc." The athletc competton wll not be stopped, however, as Olympc chef Avery Brundage sad terror would not destroy he success thus far acheved. "The games must go on," he sad. Coach Klled The Arab rad came Tuesday when the gang klled an srael coach and athlete and took nne srael hostages. The Arabs demanded srael release 200 Arab '"poltcal prsoners" before return of the Jewsh athletes. No bargan was reached. A gun battle whch erupted at an arfeld 20 mles from Munch ended n tragedy. All nne hostages were klled. Fve Arabs were klled;, three were captured. A West German polceman also lost hs lfe. Servces Planned Today the remanng srael team leaves for home. Memoral servces for ther teammates are planned n Munch and around the world. Both the Jewsh temple and synogogue n Lexngton plan honor trbutes today. West German Chancellor Wlly Brandt sad "he joyous games are over. n the comng days we wll have to prove ourselves anew." The Germans were hopeful of redeemng the atmosphere they set for the Games they hosted n Racsm and poltcal pressure n the age of Htler had damaged he sprt of the '36 Olympcs. Now the 1972 nternatonal meet wll be remembered n hstory as he Games where the Olympc sprt fell vctm to the ronc example of hatred. Tght Securty Regns Tght securty regns over the Olympc vllage today. Arports are partcularly heavy guarded, as offcals fear further terrsm n an effort to have the three captured Arabs freed. The major Munch memoral servce was attended by 80,000 yesterday. World leaders have denounced the acton-naton by naton-ncludng countres sympathetc to the Arab cause n the Mddle East conflct. Project Pal Up For Adopton As EKU Ends Sponsorshp Project Pal s up for adopton. After two years of matchng underprvleged chldren of Rchmond wth student "pals", he project faces ths year wth no sponsorng organzaton. Last year t was coordnated by Mary Glass, Drector of Women's Resdence Hall Programs. Dr. Thomas Myers, vce presdent for student affars, sad, "We are not gong- to abolsh Project Pal. t wll just have to be sponsored by another organzaton. Ths s because t s not a resdence hall program." Myers explaned that the only programs planned and budgetd by the Resdence Program Drectors wll be those whch wll take place n the dorms.,f We don't want to spend any money on programs outsde the resdent halls. He added that the man purpose of the Resdence program drectors s to see that every thng s done to make the Resdence Hall programs more complete. Myers sad, that programs whch take place outsde the dorms* took the drector's tme and ths prevented the Resdence Programs from beng complete. "f had known that Project Pal would have taken as much tme as t had would have never ncluded t n the Resdence Hall Programs. Myers sad that he has "no qualms about students partcpatng n Project Pal, but that t would have to be coordnated by some other group. He added, " thnk that by workng wth the communty students selves." can educate them- Project Pal Program s under the drecton of James Delap, drector of Telford Communty Center n Rchmond. The object of the program s to have college students volunteer some of ther free tme to an underprveledged chld. The new campus coordnator has yet to be selected. Greeks Begn Fall Rush Eastern fraterntes and sorortes have been holdng nformal rush for nterested students snce last Tuesday and wll contnue to do so untl September 18. The fraterntes and sorortes are tryng to change rush from the old formal tradton to a more nformal rush, therefore all rules for rush are beng kept to a bare mnmum. Requrements one must fll are: 1. Rushees must be at least a freshman wth 12 semester hours credt or a transfer student wth 12 semester hours. 2. Rusheees must have an overall grade average of 2.2. There wll be varous actvtes held durng the rush perod. Mxers and off-campus partes wll be the man actvtes. The fraterntes wll be holdng smokers to ntroduce ther 1 members to nterested college men. Sorortes wll hold nformal teas for nterested young women. _ Rushees wll also be nvted to vst the fraternty and sororty (Contnued On Page Four) Busness Grows Wth Eastern Photo by Donald Wallbaum THE 'ALBUM selecton at Wallace's Bookstore week about He mportance of he students to pels a horough check bv a prospectve student busness prosperty and Rchmond's economc buyer. Local merchants commented ths past urowh. BYKKNGULLETTE Organzatons Reporter How much do the students of Eastern Kentucky Unversty mean TJMocal busnesses? n a town wth a populaton of around 12,500, an nflux of eleven thousand people each fall and sprng should have a defnte affect on the busness communty. " would say the students' busness s very mportant to the busness clmate of Rchmond," sad Howard Coller, executve charman of the Rchmond Chamber of Commerce. "We are very proud of the unversty students. We don't go out and wave a flag every day but we are very proud of them. EKU s a very ntregal part of our busness communty." "When look at our communty, t s somethng lke a crcle," Coller sad, drawng a crcle on a pece of paper and dvdng t nto sectons. "EKU s a bg part, along wth Westnghouse, Robnson Tool and De. ecetera. thnk t s not only an asset economcally, but also a cultural asset. t s wonderful to have professors and good students n the communty, and all the merchants beleve t." An estmate on how much money students spent last year off campus went as hgh as 739,000 dollars a week. Not all of that was spent n Rchmond, although obvously a sgnfcant amount was. Collers sad ths revenue helped Rchmond to have better schools, a more effcent government and -polce force, and better and stronger churches., all through taxes."..another person delghj.ed^wth the busness of»tc*l ^spornfcn.ex twstaamger^f Brtts n the Unversty'Shoppng Certer. * "Our volume durng sprng break, and when students are not n town, drops thrty percent. The busness goes up and down, concdng \Plth when college s n sesson. The slow months are the mddle of May through the mddle of August." Students buy-fashons most frequently n Brtts. The young marred students purchase home furnshngs, and several stereos and televsons are sold to students each semester. "We wouldn't have located here f not for EKU," sad Crabtree, a former student of Eastern. Robert Beddow, manager of Begley's n the Unversty Shoppng Center, sad that when students are n town there s a proportonate ncrease on everythng n the store, from records to brth control plls, causng the volume of busness to ncrease 15 to 20 percent. Beddow also ponted out that shoplftng was a large problem n Begley's, and the ncdence of shoplftng ncreases as student busness does. "Shoplftng runs n cycles," Beddow explaned. "After sprng break and at the begnnng of each semester the problem ncreases." When asked what knd of tems students steal most often, Beddow repled, "tems that thev could afford to do wthout or purchase n the frst place, lke records, asprn, and cosmetcs." \ He sad that of course only a few students shoplft, but the amount of shoplftng defntely offsets the ncrease n busness generated by the students, n contrast wth Dorman Crabtree of Brtts, who stated that the rate of shoplftng at Brtts was much lower than n other states. Ken Carter, manager of Towne Cnema n Rchmond, hghly "prased the students of EKU. " apprecate the student busness. 've heard some people sng that old song that student busness doesn't mean a thng, but you'll never convnce me of that". ^W C^ fttng n the tcket booth, smokng a ppe, whle "Mar/, Queen of Scots" played to an -.',empty theater nsde.. ' "Of course," he contnued, "students don't go to moves lke they used to. My matnees have "been declnng over the years. There sn't a soul n there now. 've thought and thought about what would entce them nto comng n." For about eght months Carter tred "dollar nghts." but attendance dd not ncrease. don't thnk t's prce. try to run programs they (students) would lke to see. After The Godfather' we wll havejthe Last Pcture Show" Other companes ntervewed also reported an ncrease n volume when students are n town. Kenneth Jones of B&H Shoes reported an ncrease of ffty percent, Wayne Beasley reported an ncrease of forty percent at hs Famly Aquarum and Pet Center, and at Low Dscount Drugs, Mlt Ward sad hs busness mproved twenty percent. t s qute clear, from those ntervewed, that many, f not most of the busnesses n Rchmond are helped by the money spent by Eastern students. But on the Eastern By-Pass, where more. and more restauraants are sprngng up to captalze on the unversty, one queston arses. m How many new restaurants can open and stll allow everyone to make money? Rchard Wheeler, nght manager of Burger Kng, sad "There's only so much marketng. t may become exhausted." "Two years ago," sad Royce Pullam, owner of Frsches, "we had a lne of people watng to be seated all the tme, because we were about the only restaurant here." As Pullam spoke, there were only ten or eleven people n Frsches. s the gradual drop a result of all the restaurants openng up?" "t s a result of several thngs," Pullam repled. "The cafetera and grll at Eastern sells food cheaper, the new restaurants draw people away, and now students, have refrgerators and may not eat out as oftern All these thngs affect busness.". * As the studenl dollar becomes splj» *-*- may restaurants, the eventual problem may. be *, v.. ^-,... r-/*ve, a qujbps-: f low overhead and good fnancal backng. And the frendly atmosphere may become a ferce compettve struggle, wth each restaurant employng slck gmmcks to lure students n. but at the moment, most restaurants, lke other busness frms n Rchmond, realze an ncrease n volume to the tune of at least 20 percent when students are n town, provng that EKU s a very mportant part of Rchmond's busness communty. >

Frances Kennedy Just Lke Goldfsh-Swallowng x Class Electons Belong To The Past Let us free our mnds for a mnute and float back through the past to the 1920 *s. Those years were famous for prohbton, the Charleston, raccoon coats and the class electon. Perhaps class electons do not deserve the recognton of the better known trademarks of those days but they were a powerful as well as popular force n colleges. But those days are gone and class electons are stll wth us. They belong wth the hertage of the collegate past. Of all the actvtes on Eastern's campus, class electons are by far the cutest snce the Mr. and Mss Popularty contests were abandoned. A host of attractve young lades and "Joe College" lookng young men, runnng on tckets wth catchy names placed on banners and sgns posted around campus make t a marvelous as well as hlarous actvty for students to watch. Class electons were functonal only n Everyone s Gulty the days of goldfsh eatng contests and phone booth-stuffng. But on a modern unversty campus ther purpose has been outdated. No longer are they an effectve means of student government. Class admnstraton has been shoved asde by campus-wde government whch supposedly s representatve of all students. At Eastern the Student Assocaton s the vtal and motvatng force n campus poltcs although at tmes t presents just as much of a farce as class electons. n past years students had a tendency to dentfy wth ther class but that type of dentfcaton has gone by the boards and today, except for the freshmen class, students dentfy wth the Unversty n general. " am a student member of Eastern Kentucky Unversty and not of any partcular class" s the feelng of students today. Class governments have now regressed to the pont where ther only Paper Waste Hts All-Tme Hgh For those who have notced the hgh stacks of tray upon tray, cup upon cup and plate upon plate n any local food faclty the queston of where all the paper goes and when the senseless waste of paper products wll hault comes to mnd. Who s to blame? Almost everyone s gulty of wastng paper. Students share a large porton of the blame. Every day paper of every descrpton s tossed n a waste basket or garbage dsposal where t s eventually taken to a local landfll to be ground and crushed nto the earth wth tons of other trash. Whle at the same tme, n the forests of ths country, trees are contnually beng cut, many for the producton of more paper. Many people are becomng ecology conscous and hope to some way curb the wastefullness. Ths past summer one of Eastern's bology professors, Robert Larance, took up the hobby of sketchng wldlfe scenes on reclamed paper from mlk and cottage cheese cartons. He wanted to make people more conscous of our ecology and postve uses for used paper. Perhaps t s tme for others to take a keen nterest, especally college students. Feffer PW-A NUMKfc. POMSA * f&k «HQflp reu HfR WHAT mt FAULT «m..: SAY? Every day n our campus food facltes paper s wasted by students. An example s the paper trays. Just vson the number of trays, some hardly used, whch are thrown away durng a school year. Some place around Madson County there must be a hew mountan formng made entrely of paper trays, cups and plates. That's beng facetous, but a few years ago people dd not pay much attenton to the ar polluton problem and now look at the stuaton. wt 6Kf? HO. \ functon s to sponsor a dance. The annual Prom sponsored each year by the Junor class fell vctm last year to the new tmes. Many consdered that event the most mportant of any class sponsored actvty and now wth the Prom gone what wll be next? t seems a waste that funds be' allocated to each class from student fees when a much better use of the money could be found. Class electons are no longer an outlet for student or campus ssues to be ared, but now the outcomes of the electons are dependent upon the tckets' or ndvduals' popularty. The only people who beneft from class electons are the students who are chosen by the voters (representng only a mnorty of each class). But then as long as a few students receve some beneft from class electons Eastern wll be bogged down n the trval and tradtonal nonsense of the past at the expense of everyone., Gettng back to home and the paper tray problem, much of the fault les wth the students. Not too many years ago plastc trays were used n the grlls nstead of paper. But guess what happened to those plastc ones? The students made away wth them one by one, for ther own personal use, untl the cost of replacng them became too hgh. ncdentally f you've wondered why the grll's tables do not have salt and pepper shakers the reason s the same. The problem s everywhere. Any place you go sgns can be seen on bllboards, trash cans, food wrappers and n eatng establshments whch encourage wse use of our paper products. The students share the blame along wth teachers who waste paper themselves n a dfferent manner. Thnk of the reams of paper whch teachers waste each semester. Class handouts could nclude nformaton on each sde of the paper, and f every teacher dd ths the waste would be cut tremendously. Ecology s a matter of mportance to everyone and for a person to take ths practce serously does not mean he s a "nut". f that should be the case we need " more ecologcal nuts. ME. f m MT me TO * ^AT TfcV WNS W0 * f '/ \ " /'. - Wonderful World Of Kreskn Arab Terrorsts Play Deadly Olympc Game Wth sraels t has been two days snce the tragedy n Munch. The memoral servce for the 11 slan srael Olympans s past as s the state funeral n ther country. The memory of ths XXth Olympad, however wll not fade so quckly. t wll not be remembered as the one n whch Amercan swmmer Mark Sptz captured more gold medals than anyone n hstory. t wll not be remembered as the one n whch the people of Germany, especally those n Munch, worked for sx long years to erase the memory of World War and to nstll wthn the peoples of the world a fath n ther country that t seemed no longer exsted. They came n peace, the more than 10,000 young athletes, to engage n the games to wn honor and prestge for themselves and for ther countres. A handful of Arab terrorsts representng the most extreme wng of the Unted Arab Republc destroyed the objectves of the offcals and compettors of ths Olympad and the objectve of the orgnal modern Olympcs n 1900, when a Frenchman ntated the dea that people from all over the world could engage n athletc competton n peace and harmony even though the partcpants' countres mght be n the mdst of battle. The German people are saddened, of course, by the tragc events Tuesday, but ther embarrassment far exceeds ther.sorrow. After the years of persecuton of the Jews, Germany has wated for the chance to rectfy tself wth the rest of the world. After learnng that the 1972 Olympcs was fnally comng to ther country, Germans began sx years of work that culmnated n the magnfcence of the Olympc Vllage, the halls for the varous events and the countless facltes needed for such a spectale. Even greater than the physcal expanson of the cty, accordng to all ndcatons, were the atttudes of the people of Munch-the hosts, greeters; pages and polce, who seemed mndful of the countrywde effort to change an "mage." f The nternatonal Olympc Commttee's decson to contnue the games n the aftermath of the terrorst acton was a wse one. Avery Brundage, the head of the Commttee, sad t all when he announced that a handful of terrorsts should not be allowed to thnk that they could destroy a worldwde event lke the Olympcs, and that the Commttee and the rest of the world wll not be ntmdated by such an event. The three survvng terrorsts probably wll not be punshed, but wll more lkely be turned over to ther own country where they wll receve a hero's welcome. There s somethng very sckenng about a group sect, relgon or whatever that recognzes such martyrs as heroes, but condemnng relgons s not our purpose. The only end to such volence and, when you get rght down to t, such stupdty, s world peace, whch apparently s gong to be a long tme comng. nu. 4 tjffll / ' '. ESP Convnces Skeptcs THE EASTERN PROGRESS-Ttursday, September 7, 1972-Page 3 t Kreskn Stuns Audence Of 1500 Wth 'Amazng 9 Performance Y KKN (;r..kttk Or^un/atons tcportcr Do you beleve n mental telepathy? f you were a skeptc and attended the show presented by the amazng Kreskn on Tuesday nght you probably would now be a belever. Kreskn, whose televson show s rated number two n Canada, was greeted by loud applause, and he quckly won over hs audence wth hs straght forwardness and sharp wt. "What's your name?" he asked. "Jeff," was the reply. "Change t," Kreskn qupped. Part of the unqueness of Kreskn's act was the audence partcpaton, Hs frst "trck" was to borrow three rngs from three separate people n the audence, and lnk them together. Then Kreskn passed the lnked rngs around and fnally pulled them apart. The audence began to get the eere feelng that perhaps there was more to Kreskn than they thought when two volunteers pcked cards from a deck, one volunteer wth eght and one wth sxteen. Kreskn, wth hs back to both students, named n order, all the cards n ther hands, mssng on only one. Kreskn, dressed n a blue, yellow trmmed sport coat and yellow slacks, offered a reward of $20,000 to anyone wth proof that he used confederates n the audence, or mcrophones, durng hs thought readng stunts. Members of the audence wrote words on small slps of paper, a word or address, folded them up, and Kreskn collected the folded peces of paper on a cardboard box. He set the box on the stage and let four or fve students take one pece each. After they went back to ther seats they each read ther messages, concentrated on t and tore up the papers. " thnk you are thnkng of a place," sad Kreskn to a grl. He was on the stage, too far away to have read the notes. "s t a place?" he asked whle wrtng somethng on a sheet of paper. "Yes, t s," the grl repled. "What s t?" Kreskn asked, havng stopped wrtng. "Vermont." Kreskn mmedately showed the audence hs paper, across whch was the word "Vermont." The crowd gasped n shock, then applauded thunderously. t truly was unbeleveable. ~ Although most of hs stunts were equally astoundng, the most spectacular came near the ntermsson. n ths one, Kreskn allowed four students to hde hs paycheck "anywhere n the audtorum," whle he was kept offstage n a dressng room wth two student escorts (males, by the way). Kreskn returned and had the grl who hd the check concentrate on what steps he should take to fnd the check, where he should walk and what he should open. He found the check n one of the back rows of the audtorum, n the purse of a grl sttng n the eghth seat across. > Faculty Art Show Proves To Be Modest Success Y HANK KA.O Stan Wrter Eastern's Art Faculty show opened Monday, August 28 at Cammack Gallery and wll run through September 15. The annual show conssts of works completed durng the prevous year by members of both the Fne Arts and the Art Educaton departments. Although drawngs outnumbered other medas, also ncluded n ths year's show were pantngs, sculpture and metal crafts. The strongest pece n the gallery-or as one faculty member remarked, "the closest thng to art", was Rchard Paul's '/Unttled V", a modular sculpture of welded steel and wndow screen. Paul's use of slghtly unorthodox materal n addton to the use of color, created a feelng of lluson and space n hs near-mnmal, optcal form. "Darryl Halbrooks, the department's new panter, brought fresh deas wth hm from graduate school. Halbrook combnes and contrasts panterly technques wth clean, arbrushed areas for enormous space jumps and varety of texture on hs canvases. "El Slcko" Ron saacs strkes agan. Ths tme, however, he surpasses hmself wth hs "jgsaw puzzle" pantngs and a multple mage drawng ttled, "X-Rays". Although watercolors almost nvarably tend to be "hokey", Juanta Todd has succeeded n handlng nave, almost chld-lke mages n a sophstcated manner. A strong emphass on the fgure whch.,**& has occurred n the last several years was represented by the drawngs of Rchard Deane and Donald Dewey and the pantng of Charles Helmuth. The department's art hstoran, Rchard Palmer, contrbuted to the show wth a small bust of hs daughter of lmestone, chseled wth only a screwdrver. The purpose of the show s to dsplay work for the beneft of students and other faculty. Except for one-man shows and exhbts elsewhere, t s the only chance to compare and evaluate the faculty. For ths reason, the work shown should be the best the teacher has to offer. 7 . m -/ y *- > : 1 Page 6-Thursday, September 7, 1972-THE EASTERN PROGRESS urk's orner BY JM KURK ' Progress Sports Edtor Close Race Agan How wll the OVC football race turn out? That's the queston that's always asked around the league ths tme of year, and the way thngs look now t probably wll turn out about the same as last year hectc. t's always tough to pck a favorte, but we'll try after takng ths look at Eastern's conference opponents: MOREHEAD: The Eagles should have a potent offensve punch agan ths year, wth probably (he league's best set of quarterbacks n junors Dave Schaetzke and Lou Mans. Schaetzke, who led the league n "al offense last year, should be he starter agan and he has two experenced passng targets, lght end Gary Shrk and splt end Mke Matta. Two startng runnng backs, Bll Cason and Jm Johnson, are also back but he Eagles may have bg problems on defense wth only three regulars back. WESTERN: Offensvely, the Toppers are n about the same boat as Morehead. They return a superb backfeld led by All- OVC quarterback Leo Peckenpaugh and "speedy runnng backs Clarence Jackson and John Embree, not lo menton three top recevers. The problem, though, s n the offensve lne, whch had to be completely rebult. Defensvely, Western has ther entre secondary back, and that's bad news for opposng passers snce the Toppers led the naton's college dvson teams n pass defense last year. The defensve lne, lke the offensve lne, s nexperenced, though. MURRAY: Murray could be hurtng now that ther bg star, talback Rck Fsher, has been lost for the entre season wth an njury. Fsher led the league n rushng last year and was named the OVC's "offensve Mt** player of the year", and losjng hm could be a fatal blow to the Racers. They do have another good runner n fullback George Greenfeld (second team All- OVC) and a sold passer n Tom Pandolf, but they lost seven starters from the defensve unt, whch wll be headed ths year by veteran lnebacker Bll Fryer. TENNESSEE TECH: Tech was the league leader by far last year n rushng and should be ths year wth all three backs returnng n ther Wshbone-T attack. Top man n ths group s brusng fullback Jeff Axel, second to Fsher n OVC rushng last season. Tech also has last year's OVC defensve player of the year, lnebacker Jm Youngblood, back to anchor the defense and f they can fnd a quarterback they could be plenty tough. MDDLE TENNESSEE: The Raders wll be the league's m st experenced team wth seventeen starters back, ncludng the entre defensve backfeld and a topnotch runnng back, Reuben Justce. They also have several excellent transfers who are supposed to help out, too. EAST TENNESSEE: The Bucs wll be rebuldng from last year's dsastrous campagn wth only eght regulars returnng plus an entrely new defensve coachng staff, so the outlook sn't too brght. The (Contuned On Page Seven) GREAT KCKOFF SPECAL!! THUR-FR-SAT ONLY At Southeastern Lousana -» ^ Colonels Open 1972 Season Saturday Nght "Our young team wll get t's frst bg test Saturday," sad Eastern head football coach Roy Kdd as hs Colonels fnshed preparatons for ther openng game aganst Southeastern Lousana. The EKU Colonels wll travel to Hammond. La., Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. (CDT) contest wth the Southeastern Lousana Lons. Kdd has been qute pleased wth the way the Colonels have progressed durng the last four weeks of drlls and fundamentals. "We beleve we are comng around as a unt. But, of course, here s nothng that can take the place of actual game experence to make some of these "younger players more mentally tough," Kdd sad. What experence Eastern dd have returnng has been dmshed somewhat by njures. t was learned Wednesday by the EKU coachng staff that sophomore defensve end John Govan of Melbourne wll have to gve up football because of a pnched nerve n hs neck. "John was bothered n hgh school, last year and ths fall wth ths neck njury. The consensus.of our doctors' reports was that John gve up football," Kdd sad. Eastern's other returnng letterman at defensve end, 6-4 senor Mke Ncholson of Mam, Fla., has re-njured hs knee and wll not start aganst SLU. Ncholson s expected to make the trp, however. To take the place of Ncholson, sophomore Harvey Jones of Mam has been swtched from lnebacker to end. Freshman red-shrt Vc Smth of Centervlle, Oho, wll start at the other end slot. Other defensve starters for the Colonels nclude: at tackles, senor Al-Amercan canddate Wally Chambers of Mt. The combnaton of quarterback Mark Varsco to flanker Raymond Mahfouz hold hghlght the Lons' offense, whle Kerry Duplesss, an all- Lousana collegate choce who set a school record wth eght nterceptons last season, wll spearhead the SLU defense. "Southeastern's record last season s decevng because they lost sx of these games by eght ponts or less," Kdd sad. "Wth 17 or 18 starters returnng from 1971, ths wll be a tough, openng game opponent for us." Coach Dale, who looks at Eastern as one of the least experenced teams n the OVC, s a 16 year veteran at coachng. ' Before hs coachng days Dale was a rather outstandng player at Ole Mss and was captan of hs team n He also played one year n the pro ranks wth the Washngton Redskns. "We have a bg job n store for us," says Dale, "We have some qualty football players, but we also have some postons whch reman queston marks." Among these "qualty" players s Mahfouz, a senor wde recever, who caught 22 passes for 3 13 yards last season and one touchdown, and s one of the -Lons' all-tme top pass catchers. Startng at quarterback for the past two seasons has been Varsco, a junor. Last season he had 56-for-144 passng mark for 569 yards makng the combnaton of Varsco to Mahfouz a tough one. The Lons also have a defensve player who could be thought of as one of the best defensve backs n the Gulf South Conference.
