2 EASTERN GRAD HONORED PAGE 8 4rd Year No. Chrstmas Message To Eastern Famly As the joyous Yuletde Season agan draws near, Mrs. Martn and should lke to send Chrstmas greetngs to each of you n the Eastern f[ famly and to express our fondest hopes that you wll pause to gve thought to the true meanng of Chrstmas. Our favorte Chrstmas message we have V shared wth you durng the past few years s that Sj of Henry Van Dyke, whose beautful words on "Keepng Chrstmas" express our sentments. "t s a good thng to observe Chrstmas Day. M The mere makng of tmes and seasons, when men * agree to stop work and make merry together, s a wse and wholesome custom. t helps one to feel the supremacy of the common lfe over the ndvdual lfe. t remans a man to set hs own lttle watch, now and then, by the great clock of humanty whch runs on sun tme." Mr. Van Dyke approprately tells the mean- ng of Chrstmas as "forgettng what tyou have done for others, and rememberng what others Mhave done for you; gnorng what the world owes <x$ter 'Settng The Pace n you, and thnkng what you owe the world. t j means stoopng down to consder the needs of < lttle chldren, and others less fortunate than we, and rememberng the weakness and lonelness of ; people* who are growng old. t means not ask- ng how much your frends love you, but nstead, [ 8 askng yourself whether you love them enough. "But, there s a better thng than the obser- vance of Chrstmas. Day, and that s keepng Chrstmas... "f you are wllng to beleve that love s [ f the strongest thng n the world stronger than hj «hate, stronger than evl, stronger than death, and ' that the blessed lfe whch began n Bethlehem nneteen hundred years ago s'the mage and < brghtness of the Eternal Love f you beleve ths, then you can keep Chrstmas. "And f you keep t for a day, why not al- ways?" Our sncerest wsh at ths Chrstmas tme s for all of you to have the merrest holday season ever and that, when you return, you come wellrested to resume, the vgorous tasks that le ahead W. of you. """"»- B,ut, whle you retax, do not becpmtf neglgent. Traffc* hazardous and accdents are ml numerous. Do not deny Eastern, and your frends, the prvlege of your exstence among us. Sgnfcance Not n Decson THE BRTSH CAME AND CON- QUERED last Thursday n the Eastern- Cambrdge debate. Eastern lost the decson by a - pollng of the judges. But the sgnfcance of the debate may well have out-weghed the decson the judges rendered as a break through n the debatng program at Eastern. Eastern has a debate club of whch t can be ptoud. The partcpants n the club have done a tremendous job n the past two to three years as far as makng the Eastern team one to be respected, even vacu, n debatng crcles not only n ths State, but n natonal'competton as well. They have accrued a qute mpressve dsplay of trophes and awards for ther efforts. Debate coach, Mrs. Amee Alexander s to be commended for her enthusastc work wth the team and obvous dedcaton to debatng. Dr. Robert Kng, charman of the department of speech and dramatcs, s also to be applauded for hs More Than A Day work and support of ths actvty. Debatng represents a very scholarly form of ntercollegate competton. Sportsman-lke competton s desrable at the college and unversty level as a truly agreeable and acceptable form of entertanment, relaxaton, and dverson. But there s and should be acceptance of competton n other than sportng lnes, although these are necessary as well. Debatng s the answer to ths need, for t provdes not only the goals set forth n other events, but also affords the opportunty to wegh both sde's* of' Kglrfy" provocatve ssues and "ther arguments. Tle enthusastc audence n the packed Ferrell Room of the Combs Classroom buldng may be a healthy ndcaton that. debatng has caught on n appeal to the Eastern student body. We hope that the college communty has developed an nterest n one of Eastern's proudest teams and that contnued support s gven them. Thoughts Of Chrstmas By SANDRA MURPHY Progress Staff Wrter Chrstmas s much more than a day. t s a season. t s a tme of joy, a tme of warmth, a tme of love, and a tme of peace. Throughout the Chrstmas season a sprt of brotherhood prevals, for ths s the season of renewal. Men renew old acquantances and keep alve the warmth of current ones. Old holday tradtons are revewed. The smells of holly and fresh pne fll the wnter's ar. The rngng of bells, the clngng of cons n kettles, and the laughter of chldren are all sounds of the holday season. Everywhere the voces of people joned n song can be heard sngng carols. The bleakness and dngness of the cty s tfansformed nto ranbows of color. The streets are brghtly decorated n hues of red and green entwned wth glstenngs of gold and slver. Harmony s the keynote of Chrst- mas. Chrstan men throughout the world jon n the celebraton that was begun n Bethlehan over nneteen hundred years ago. There amd the darkness of nght and the btterness of wnter a Savor was born. He was born n a stable. But, nether the coldness of nght or the humblest of surroundngs could prevent ths brth from beng heralded and greeted wth jublance by the hosts of heavenly angels. There appeared n the sky that nght a brght star. Ths star guded the shepherds to the new born babe. The lght from the stars, n a sense, stll shnng. Today the star s gudng men to the worshp of Chrst the Kng. The vstors to the stable brought forth wth! them alms as tokens of ther love. TheSe wse men started our tradton of gft gvng. Ths year as n all other years we should jon n prase wth the angels n adorng Chrst the Lord. THE BLOOD DRVE whch has been runnng snce Thanksgvng culmnated last week n enthusastc response on the part of Eastern students, faculty and staff personnel. The blood receved n ths drve wll be sent to the Amercan solders n South \ Vet Nam. We would lke to commend the 868 students who expressed a wllngness to help make ths drve a success. 98 pnts of blood were accepted out of the 456 students and staff processed. t was estmated that 4 prospectve donors were turned away because of the lack of facltes for recevng the blood. t s dsheartenng when an all-out effort s made on the part of the college and students to answet a call such as ths wth such avd enthusasm, that the Red Cross could not have been prepared to meet the demand. We Have set a precedent n ths blood drve by far surpassng prevous records and also surpassng the estmated number of students who would volunteer to donate. We hope n future blood drves that the Red Cross wll be equpped to receve the offered donatons. We also thank the Patte A. Clay Hosptal for ther efforts to help wth de bloodmoble by supplyng needed nurses and also by lendng bottles to receve the blood. The drve success was also due n great measure to the plannng of the Student Councl Caduceus Club combned commttee who sponsored, planned, and co-ordnated the drve. Charmen for the Caduceus Club commttee were Sharon Rchardson and Fred Ballou; and the Student Councl commttee were Mke Johnson and Kathy Colebrook. Hugh Burkett, presdent of the Student Councl, stated, " would lke to thank not only the commttee charmen and the student effort that made ths blood drve a success, but would also lke to thank John Ruggles, Brenda Phlpot, Sheryl Godsey, and the Counter Guerrlas who worked so dlgently to publcze ths event. The Student Councl and the Caduceus Club are thrlled at the student effort shown and wll do everythng possble for the next blood drve to provde facltes for more blood donatons." Report Cheaters? (ACP) Should cheaters be ex-. pos^ V spelled?, -**-_* An educaton professor" at North Texas State Unversty, Denton recently accused one of hs students of cheatng, reports the Campus Chat. John M. Jones told hs class he had evdence that one of them had cheated on a test. " have had qute a bt of experence wth ths sort of thng and after several years have come to the concluson that t s best for all concerned f the teacher exposes the cheater before hs classmates," he sad. "t's a terrble thng to do," he contnued, "but t makes the person nvolved thnk twce before dong such a thng agan and should llustrate to the rest of the class the futlty of tryng to get away wth cheatng." Lookng drectly at a coed n the front row, he assused her and asked, "Well, what do you have to say for yourself?" "Mr. Jones... ddn't do t," the coed repled exctedly. "How can you accuse me of such a thng?" The professor nssted that she leave the room, report to the regstrar's offce, and drop the course. He opened the door and sad "good rddance" to her as she hurred out. Returnng to the class, he asked f he had done the wrong thng. Every hand was rased. Then he Went outsde and brought the accused Student n. He told the students they had just wtnessed an ncdent prepared to llustrate how a class can be made to feel shock, surprse, embarrassment, and astonshment. The students were asked to wrte a paragraph on ther reactons. n the paragraphs they wrote, most students sad they felt the method was cruel and rude. They also agreed that open exposure would elmnate 6t reduce cheatng. Frday, Dec. 7, 965 Eastern Progress Page Chrst vs. 'Jolly 0' St. Nck' EVERY YEAR WE HEAR LECTURES on the keepng of the meanng of Chrstmas, but every year "slegh bells rng" before we barely have the opportunty to wash the Thanksgvng dnner dshes. Modern mssonary technques have managed to take the Chrstmas message to nearly every land and a great many peoples of the world. But there s stll much work to be done before the knowledge of Chrst s world-wde, and much more work to be done after that before He s accepted n truth. We, n Amerca, know the story of how the babe was born and placed n a manger, of how the shepherds and the wse men honored hm. We know many of the recorded detals of Hs lfe, of Hs teachngs, and of Hs death. But stll there are Santa's on every corner, n every store, and at least one at every Chrstmas party. Our thoughts lnger not on the chld born so long ago and lad n manger, but dwell on "Jolly OL' St. Nck." We must challenge ourselves not only to enjoy the customs and tradtons of Chrstmas, but we must also remember what these customs and tradtons represent. That s, ways and means adopted by man to ad n the celebraton of (he Chrst Chld. Let us not be overwhelmed by the sometmes over-shadowng glores to the truth. We hope that plans for attendng Church servces and reverent contemplaton of the purpose of the celebraton are ncluded n your schedules for the holdays. The Progress edtors and Staff take ths opportunty to wsh the entre Eastern communty students, faculty, and staff a very "Merry Chrstmas." We hope that rules of safe drvng are abded so that each of you may return n the New Year safe and rested after the holdays. Sghts And Sounds Bj JOK M. JOHNSON The Unversty of Kentucky presented "The Grass Harp," by Truman Capote, December 8-, and t was ndeed a respectable producton. The scrpt s less than effectve, even though t la a rather fathful adaptaton of the novella of the same name. Much of Capote's artful use of language s lost n transferrng to the medum of the theatre, even when Capote hmself s dong the trans- Among te V.MS Actors n the producton were the strong characterzaton of Elzabeth Hoagland and Sylva Jackson as the Talbo ssters; Susan Cardwell as a flooze-cosmetcs saleswoman, and Paul Johnson., the town barber. Especally noteworthy, too, was the treehouse settng whch lent tself to the abstract qualty of the play as opposed to the realstc nteror used n some scenes. Charles Dckens, drector, s to be commended on hs handlng of several crowd scenes, partcularly the one n whch the only lghung s from a posse's flashlghts as they move through the woods and confront the characters who have flm to the tree-house. Season to be Jolly Not untl read a Chrstmas story n one of my classes last Monday dd get even the slghtest feelng t was "the season to be Jolly." As one gets older, the magc erf Chrstmas seems more fleetng. We have to work harder and harder to catch von a spark of that wonder and awe we felt so easly as lttle chldren. Even Sb, there s tor each of us, our prvate rtuals we perform, and n the process, we recapture somethng of the specal nature of that happest holday Chrstmas. Some of the thngs that make Chrstmas specal for me are these: Decoratng a lve Chrstmas tree of cedar or pne, that makes a room smell of woods and forests; Eatng frutcake made the prevous Chrstmas, wrapped n a wne-soaked cloth, and aged for a year- Re-readng my favorte Chrstmas stores Roftrk Bradford's 'Mow Come Chrstmas." Dylan Thomas' "A Chld's- Chrstmas n Wales," and Truman Capote's "A Chrstmas Memory;" Rdng through quet neghborhoods to admre the lavsh, sometmes garsh, decoratons on lawns and houses; Watchng chldren lookng at the numerous Santas (one oh every street corner and n every store) and tryng to un-puzzle the rddle of whch s the real Santa Claus; Wshng and yearnng for a whte Chrstmas, whch la somethng 've never known; Hearng my favorte Chrstmas song, "Carol of the Drum," at least a hundred tmes; Sendng and gettng Chratmaa Cards; Wrappng packages that look as good aa the presents nsde; Stayng up late every nght' and sleepng late every day; Takng a wreath to the cemetery and layng on the grave of a loved one, rememberng for a moment the joyous past you shared together; Wshng frends and strangers alke, lke you, that old-fashoned but stll heartfelt greetng Merry Chrstmas; Happy New Lvely Month of Art* January promses to be a month for the arts. The show, enttled "Chrstmas Kaledoscope," conssted of e- leven numbers. One of these was a vocalzaton of "0 Holy nght" by Fonda McAllster. Assstant Drector of the show, Vck Turpln, sad, "Ths year's show was much deeper than last year's. t requres more thought n beng understood." The show was narrated by Lttle Threatre members Ron Statzer and Suzunne Arkrum. They took ther narratves from poems whch llustrated and nterpreted yuletde legends. More nterpretatons " thnk ths show had more modern dance nterpretatons of deas and words than prevous ones," Mss Ankrum sad. "The Cherry Tree Carol," danced to the voce of Joan Baez, featured the only male partcpant who danced n the show, playng the part of Joseph, ths dancer, Jon Schmdt, sad, "Beng the only boy n the show ddn't bother me. thnk more boys should try out for modern dance. Ths year several boys have expressed an nterest n Jonng the show." Not Ssses "And that does not mean they are 'ssses' ether," added Jll Smth who played the part of Mary n the same number. She later went on to say that she especally enjoyed dong ths partcular number. "Ths was the frst tme we ever used a folk ballad n one of our dances," she sad. Sssy McCaulcy, presdent of Drum and Sandal, talked generally about costumes for the show Playng the part of a jester, the Lord of Msrule, she acted as part of the narratve dancng wthout musc. Her costume was dvded nto two parts: the whte sde representng the purty and humlty of Chrstmas; and the decorated sde representng the merry, gay sprt of the season. Although the group made most of ther own costumes, the major dffculty arose wth the ones they had to buy. A few days before the show, they dscovered that two of ten floor-length gowns to be used n the last number, the "Hallelujah'' chorus, were mssng. "We beleve they were stolen," Mss McCauley sad. The ten gowns had cost the grls approxmately J00. Wth two mssng, they had to arrange substtute costumes whch all ten grls had to wear n order to look alke. " thnk that our costumes were apprecated very much ths year." Mss McCauley sad. "Perhaps t was because of the vvd colors and the overall Medeval theme." Another dancer, Phylls Taylor commented, " was a lttle dsapponted that the student body, dd not turn out better for Tuesday nght's show. thnk the freshman orentaton audence was actually more receptve."
