Mr. Hunt to Student Body Speakng for Presdent Kelly and the members of the Faculty, extend to the student body of ths college the followng Chrstmas Message: n ths year of 1940 no responsble educator can voce to an ntellgent body' of college students a merely tradtonal or popular Chrstmas greetng. The Chrstmas season wth ts tradtonal note of "Peace on earth, good wll to men" sounds strangely out of place n ths \vartorn world of todav. Untold mllons of men, wome~, and chldren n the countres from whch our ancestors came are passng through m 0 r e heart-rendng experences than have ever before fallen to the lot of the human race. Chrstmas commemorates the brth of the Prnce of Peace. t marks the comng of One who durng H~ lfe on ths earth gave to all manknd the onlv nfallble rules for peace and h~ppness. But those who have rsen to postons of power n past generatons, n ther concet belevng themselves to be wse, declared that the. words of the greatest sprtual leader of all tme were the words of a vsonarv. They substtuted for the Serm011 on the Mount a phlosophy based on greed, specal prvleges for the few, persecuton of the weak, ruthlessness, and force. n Europe the results of ther tragc error are seen today n the smokng runs of once beau1.fhl ctec;, n desolated country sdes, and n (contnued on page 4) Banquet, Chrstmas Party, Carollng Clmax Week Faculty leader... _~_._-"_~_"'.A,_..... _ PRSCLLA M. Lovett NOT TO BE MNSTERED UNTO BUT TO MNSTER MEMBER OF THE COLUMBA SCHOLASTC PRESS ASSOCATON RATES: $1.00 A YEAR OUR CHRSTlVAS SPRT Another year, another Chrstmas! We here n Amerca have another opportunty to experence the joy and happness of ths season as all the world was meant to. We can stll face the comng holdays '''lth hgh antcpaton of rejocng, feastng, gft-gvng, merrymakng and thanksgvng. We are stll able to enter our churches to pay trbute to the Almghty, Who n Hs Wsdom sent Hs Son down upon the earth for our mmortal redempton. Yes, and we can attend those servces wth a prayer n our hearts for less fortunate peoples that they mght speedly rejoce n that peace whch they and we have always desred. Atl Brdgewater \ve fully experence the fruts of peace as we hold one Chrstmas celebraton after another, each bndng us the more strongly to the sprt and the deal that s an essental part of ths season. n our news columns we read that the dnner and party and serenadng of last nght are tradtonal. They are part1 of the Brdgewater hertage. Nor are these customs pecular to us alone. Rather they are part of the natonal scene, f they are not truly becomng pecular to our country alone. Why all ths? Because Amerca s the refuge of the world, not ts battleground. For a terrfyng contrast to our tranqulty we have merely to read our newspapers where today's headlnes wll be tomorrow's hstory. And a sorry hstory t wll be: shot through and through wth the story of gallant natons meetng ruthless defeat and subsequent oppresson, wth the plght of the hopelessly outnumbered, wth the cres for help from the downtrodden and weary. Let us enjoy our Chrstmas. And let us also pray that madness n the hearts of the dctators wll be replaced by good wll towards all manknd. LET'S GET BEHND THEM! Wth two games already behnd us, Brdgewater faces ten or more basketball games to be played ths season. The fellows out there on the floor are gvng everythng they have. Thev and we want to wn all the rest of the games on the schedule. ~ The team has ts work cut out. A group of sprt-mnde-d students has outlned our work. The theory s smply that f the team knows t has a gallery rootng for a Brdgewater vctory, success s a great deal easer to acheve. You know how wllng you are to work when someone has just prased whatever you are dong. And t s the same \-vay wth the team. Learn the cheers, attend the cheer rally before the game, go to all the games you possbly can, especally the home ones, root your team through basket after basket. What do the spectators get out of t? The fun of gong, the thrll of vctory, the frenzy of cheerng, a sore throat, a glorous feelng of helpng the boys wn. CHRSTMAS SEALS Help to Protect Your Home from Tuberculoss "Experts beleve that tuberculoss n ths naton can not only be brought under control but that t can be fnally wped out" accordng to a pamphlet publshed by the Plymouth County Health Assocaton, 106 Man Street, Brockton, n connecton wth ts 1940 Chrstmas Seal Drve n whch the members of the college are asked to jon. CAMPUS COMMENT s happy to jon n the plea for contrbutons and sales of Chrstmas Seals for ths cause whch has proved ts worth by the rapd advance of knowledge of the dsease made possble mostly through ths annual drve. We ask tha t each student member of our college buy enough Chrstmas Seals that he may put one on each and every card and letter he sends. The double-barred cross should be an nseparable part of every pece of mal dropped nto the mal boxes. A lttle skmpng on our part,,,ll provde adeq ua te care for tubercular sufferers. Perhaps more mportant than ths consderaton s the fact that each contrbuton furthers the work n preventon of ths dsease. -~~~~~~~ SABOTAGE From where she stood On the lght, brght tree, The waxen angel looked down Qute unconcernedly Upon a yellow ktten n an open Crstmas box, vvho chewed contentedly On a shnng slver fox. Snoopse and Scoopse Cut Chrstmas Capers "And the greatest joy s n the gvng whle we on. earth are stll lvng," murmured Snoop as she gazed at me across a table at BRADY'S DNER. Over a tasty dnner served by smlng Tom Brady, Snoop had been readng her long Chrstmas lst fnally reachng the end of all her aunts, uncles and cousns bv the dozens. "Come on, Scoop, 've a party n the dorm tonght, so over to the B. P. M. we must go," smled Snoop as she hustled me out of the dner and up the street to the BROCKTON PUBLC VAR KET, BRDGEWATER BRANCH. "Dd you know that t's here that all students buy the cookes, cakes, pckles, pop, etc. they use for dorm spreads and club partes?" asked Snoop as she proved t by buyng out half the merchandse. "You learn somethng every day," was my weak reply as staggered out, laden wth bundles. Scoopsy Drops n on Edde Your wheezy Scooper had to do an errand at EDDE'S, so we rested there awhle. My tux had to be mended and pressed for the Chrstmas banquet. Only at Edde's would Snoop leave my sut to be rejuvenated. Snoop wanted to buy a few gfts and she knew SNOW'S was just the place to buy presents whch would brng joy to every recpent. As usual, she wasn't wrong. Fred Snow always has somethng brght and new when we enter hs store. Here on the rack hung the most resplendent tes my eyes had ever seen. BOTANY tes, Fred called them, but r was dragged away to the glove counter where Snoop was coong over the "sweet thngs." When we left wth several more packages added to my bundles, notced Snoop peekng at the BOTANY tes. Oh, r hope, hope. Snoopse Dscovers Unque Gfts Then on to CONDON'S BRDGE AND GFT SHOP where Snoop had ordered Chrstmas cards. Whle we were there we dscovered somethng new - tny fary stones. For over half an hour we sat enthralled as we heard the legend of tny fares weepng and as ther tears fell to the earth they crystallzed nto tny pebbles on each of whch was formed a mnute cross. They have been used as charms for centures but lvlss Condon explaned that today they are used n forms of jewelry. t was wth ths thought n mnd that Snoop bought several of the lucky stones to gve as gfts to her grl frends. Next to REX AU'S w her e Snoop bought some new musc and a pouch of tobacco for my new ppe. Over a delcous creamy mlk shake, the knd that only Doc, Syd, or Lous know how to concoct, Snoop and empha tcally agreed that ths Chrstmas promsed to be the best ever. The party, n the form of a costume affar, wll be held n the Woodward Recreaton Room. A feature of the evenng wll be a buffet supper. Volet Porta and Bernard Knsella are n charge of the affar.

The future peace and happness of our country wll depend upon your ablty to thnk more clearly and to act more ntellgently than those of precedng generatons, who have led humanty to ts present dsaster. The doors of most of the old world colleges are closed. Ther lght s flckerng or already extngushed. But, so far, the colleges of Amerca are dynamc. They are stll tryng to hold aloft the torch of human equalty, ndvdual freedom, and brotherly love.
