Varsty Starts Season; Team Shows Promse A strong, deceptvc Alumn team, perhaps the best n many years, rcturned to Brdgc\\;ltlr and was roundly defeated by the Red and \Vhte of B.T.C. The score: 58 to 38. The Swenson-men used a "two platoon" system and ran thc.alumn nto the boards. Led by Captan Douthart, the varsty dsplayed a dazzlng passng and deadly shootng ~lttack for two perods. \Vth a commandng lead at half tme the vctors slowed down and cnded the game wth a mercful score. Douthart, l\'lorey, Nolan, Chrste and Zano wcre the fve varsty starters. All arc veterans except freshman Chrste who has ndcated hs ntenton of re~ manng wth the team for good. Good pass-work and team play was very much n evdence - somethng lackng n last year's team. Although rough spots were evdent, Coach Swenson s sure they can be roned out and that ths year's club,vll bc one we won't be ashamed to cheer for. Honor Socety Meets Epslon ota chapter of Kappa Delta P, natonal scholastc honor socety, has held two meetngs. The Natonal Poetry Assocaton of Los Angeles, Calforna, announced that the poems, "The Cross" by Los Dermody, and "The Republc" by Stanley Mackun have been accepted for publcaton n the Annual Anthology of College, poetry. The Anthology s a complaton of the fnest poetry wrtten by the college men and wonfenofamcrca representng every secton of the country. Selectons,vere made from thousands of poems submtted. \Ve heartly congratulate the students on ths honor. Don Leach To Play Throughout the evenng, dancers wll fll the floor as they waltz and rumba to the musc of Don Leach's orchestra. Nlss Bouchard, a natve of Lawrence, Massachusetts, prevously tanght at \Voreester Teachers College. She attended Rhode sland College of Educaton at Provdence, where she receved her Bachelor of Arts, and Boston College where she receved her :t\-aster of Arts n Hstory and Government. By the tme we read ths we may even be at war, for now armed conflct seems nevtable. The U. S. has gven Russa every chance to come to a peaceful settlement but to no aval. The Communst Party today has arms completely crclng the globe. n order to get ths vast network of supporters, the party must have been extremely actve for many years. t s a pty that they could not have been npped n the bud. They are here today, however, to say ther nasty words and kll our fellow Amercans. Although most of us here n Brdgewater would have to leave our famles and frends, we must stop ths now! Students of Rhode sland College of Educaton are gettng ambtous as shown by ther recent appearance on televson. Gemlan Exchange Students T\... o German students are now studyng at the New Brtan Teachers College of Connectcut under the State Department's program whch offers a year of study to pupls and teachers of occuped countres. About three hundred and ffty students and one hundred and ffty teachers arc comng ths year from Germany to educatonal nsttutons throughout the U. S. Now, ask you, where else could ths happen? At Boston Unversty, a junor n the School of Educaton donated a televson set for the use of hs fellow students. Does anyone at Brdgewater \vant to borrow a lght bulb? Also, Boston Unversty s stagng ts frst arena producton. The play wll be unque techncally. Exts and entrances arc made by blackng out the whole theater. Sets arc changed n a dm-out, makng the operaton vsble to the whole audence. Lghts arc overhead on the four sdes of the theater as well as drectly above the actors. The audence s seated on the four sdes n two rows. After twenty-fve years of servce, Presdent Danel Marsh announced hs retrement, effectve February frst. The ttle of Chancellor of Boston Unversty, a lfetme poston, was conferred upon Presdent Marsh hy the trustees. Methods n One Easy Lesson From "The \Yestern Washngton Collegan" we fnd that a professor of educaton has gven up tryng to understand the younger generaton, and has formulated the followng code: 1. Los Dermody Chapel Chmes Presdents of the varous on-campus organzatons spoke brefly on the purposes and programs of ther organzatons durng Chapel on October thrtyfrst. l\r. and Mrs. Kenneth Custance, of the Boston Unversty's School of Musc faculty, presented a program of harp musc. rsh and Scottsh ars predomnated, nterspersed wth a bref hstory, gven by Mr. Custance, on the orgns and development of ths nstrument. Jeremah Buckley, former F. B.. agent, addressed the assembly on the subect of Communsm at Chape on November fourteenth. Thanksgvng Program Reverend J am P. Robertson, pastor of the Frst Congregatonal Church n Brantree, was guest speaker at a specal Thanksgvng Chapel on November twenty-frst. He chose as hs topc "The Amercan Dream." The Women's Chor rendered an approprate number. A travel talk accompaned by moves pcturng "The Chann of Old New England," presented by Phllp Noble of Rockport, hghlghted Chapel on November twenty-eghth. A Men's Athletc Assocaton program, dealng wth basketball was presented on December ffth, wth Henry Hcks, M.A.A. presdent, n charge. The agng senors thre\v away ther crutches, slngs, and plls to take to the feld. Unfortunately, Wellesley provded the opposton-and all the goals of the game. Only a few mnutes had passed when the home team's attack drove the ball nto the nets. Pantng and groanng, B.T.C.'s clcven kept fghtng. The sprt was there, but the fact that the senors arc gettng old was apparent. When the fnal whstle blew, the score stared out, 5-0. Pembroke On Top After a ffteen mnute rest, the "refreshed" team staggered out to meet Pembroke. Two junors took part n ths contest,. gvng Brdgewater new lfe. More than new lfe was needed, however, for vctory was not to be ours. The score ths tme was 3-0. The one brght lght of the afternoon was the selecton of Jean Cappalluzzo for the All-College Team. "Cappy" played on the squad that met the All Boston second team. Ths contest ended n a scoreless te. Those who made the trp were "Cappy," "Gnger" Smth, "Ss" Ross, Mare Qurk, Fath Dudgeon, "Marty" Cummngs, "Peg" Stetson, Nancy Cordngley, Janet Dunwoode, Dors Goy- ""'ettlre,'1\1faddy" Topham; «Lou" Wl ams, Carolyn Lorman, and Helen Boucher. Mrs. Leach, Coach and faculty advsor, accompaned the team. Frosh Future Fghters Somethng new has been added to the W. A. A. ntramural Basketball League that s held every Thursday afternoon, namely, the freshman teams. They are slowly fllng the space left by Hell's El, the team from the Class of The fght, fun and sprt they now dsplay wll develop nto a terrfc team n the not too dstant future. Senors Starrng Basketball s runnng true to fonn wth the senors racng along and wnnng every game so far. They have a top team on the floor wth Dudgeon, Cordngly, Cappelluzzo, Cummngs, Smth,' and Qurk. These sx have played together snce freshman year and the teamwork shows t. Ths wll be the last eght weeks of basketball that they wll play together. They should from all Fall Sports Program Draws Good Turnout Along \vth the close of the frst quarter came the close of \V.A.A. fall sports. An excellent turnout n all actvtes was noted. wth each class tryng to take top honors. 1h1l1ks to the weather man, most of the scheduled feld hockey games,vere played. The vctors n ths actvty were not decded untl the fnal day, when the Senor team was held to a scoreless te by the freshmen. On the same day, a mxed team of junors and senors won by forfet to take the champonshp. Cappy Wns Tenns Tourney The tenns ttle went to Jean CappallllZZO, a member of the senor class, who defeated both Jean Hassett and Lorrane LaBelle. The elass of '51 also came out on top n badmnton as Dors Goyetche and Gnger Smth dsplayed ther skll n a match wth Lena acova and Lorrane LaBelle. Brdgewater's Robn Hood s a member of the freshman class, Conne Leonard. She makes t look so easy-but we all know how hard t s to get those bullseyes. Second place went to Barbara O'Nel, and the sophomores. Support Your Class How many ponts dd your class get towards the plaque? Dd you go out and try? n order for your class to wn ths award, everyone must make an effort. n dong your best, however, don't forget that sportsmanshp means more than wnnng. t may not mean vctory, but t does mean respect and admraton from others. Ther 3 wns and 2 tes represented the best record n many years. They outscored the opponents 19 goals to 16. Credt should go to Coach Swenson who developed n Fletcher and Chrste two of the best footmen on the squad. He took' a group of frst year men and a couple of vets and molded them nto a fghtng, scrappy B.T.C. squad. Workng as hard as Coach Swenson was Captan Chet Smolsk, a rugged, able dcfcnseman who seemed to nstll n the team that extra somethng. t all added up to a good team and one that we could all be proud of. The handsome young boater played great ball as B.T.C. beat Suffolk 5-0, R.LC.E. 5-0, and Durfee 2-0. B.T.C.'s journey to Ftchburg was not as complete a falure as the A- score ndcated. t was a sold vctory for Ftchburg for two perods. (contnued on page 8) BTC Loses To Gordon n Low Scorng Game n openng the basketball season, Tuesday, November 28, the B.T.C. Varsty team met a very worthy and skllful opponent n the men of Gordon College. Durng the frst hour of the evenng, our Junor Varsty team, playng a game of four eght-mnute perods, put the ball through the hoop so. many tmes that the game looked lke uncompettve practce. Housman, Koumantzels, Boselle and Lord shot baskets all evenng, Boselle comng out as hgh scorer wth cleven ponts. The fnal score was B.T.C. 45, Gordon College 23. The B.T.C. fans hoped that ths was a prevue of attractons comng later n the evenng. Game Starts Well The Varsty game began wth a bang. The spectators had hardly enough tme to move to the edges of ther chars before Zono had the ball through the hoop. However, the fans had just about begun to cheer ths frst score when Gordon College also slpped the ball through for two ponts. For the greater part of the game, scorng by both teams was carred on n ths seesaw fashon. At the begnnng of the fourth quarter t was stll a queston as to whch of the teams would break out n the lead. Both teams were scorng alternately untl thc last few mnutes of the quarter when Gordon College surged ahead -by ten ponts. B.T.C. played hard, managng to get the ball ncar the net several tmes, but each attempt for a score brought sghs and groans from the spectators as the ball rolled around and fell from the wrong sde of the hoop. Each game had ts thrlls as "Tny" Lemeux drew up fve dfferent combnatons to defeat the junor Vkngs, but each combnaton met wth the same fate. n the frst gamcs, the junors romped to a 24-0 vctory whch saw Bll Whalon and Bob Cooper toss touchdown passes to Dck Morn and Ed Nevrauskas. The junors easly held Tny's Lemons on the defense wth Ray Whtng and Andy Detln dong great defensve work. Lemons Fght Hard '1 'he second game proved to be a lttle more dffcult for the Vkngs, as Tny had pcked up a new and rejuvenated squad. However, a quck pass from Bob Cooper to Doug Barrows put the junors ahead carly n the game. n the fnal mnutes of the game, Bll Whalon ptched to Dck Morn and the game ended wth the Champs on the long end of a 12-0 score. The thrd game almost fnshed the Vkngs, but they managed to squeeze through by a 12-6 margn. The frst game on November 15. gave all sx teams a chance to put ther prowess to a test. The Olers whaled the tar out of the Whalers by a score of 29 to 19. Annual Freshman Party Enjoyed By Students The annual Freshman Party took place on Monday, November 13, from 4 to 5 :30 p.m. n the Albert Gardner Boyden Gymnasum. Several dance mxers, under the drecton of Robert Rowell, master of ceremones, served as a successful preface to the afternoon's festvtes. A vared entertanment program was the hghlght of the affar. Prevously the unt had come to town, but never to the college. The response of the students to ths appeal was overwhelmng. A total of sxty students donated blood. BTC-Gordon Game- (contnued from page 5) \valked off the court vctorous. Hgh scorer for Gordon Col1cge was Strodle wth seventeen ponts.' :rvorey led the B.T.C. scorng wth 17 ponts. One elderly Gordon College fan remarked that he admred the players representng both colleges for ther farplay and gentlemanly conduct. Chrste Plays \Vell The startng fve for B.T.C., Chrste, Zono, Nolan and r-.lorcy, led by Captan DOllthart, kept the game at a fast pace, wth Baley, O'Bren and LeVasseur comng n durng the last three quarters. Chrste, a neophyte on the team and the only freshman, played a hll game very well, hustlng the ball lo\vard hoj.llc-fcrnt61'-wlttl--acvcr foot \York and drbblng. Douthart, Zono, Nolan, Morey and Baley showed evdence of the fnesse for whch we remember them so well n last year's gamcs, but ther efforts were often unceremonously rejected by the hoop.
