Other prncpals who have not receved these regulatons and entry blanks should wrte to the State Offce for ths materal f they are nterested. Classes B and C wll meet at the Unversty of Kentucky pool on Saturday, March 30, and Class A swmmers wll meet n Lexngton on Saturday, Aprl 6. The State Swmmng Commttee wll be n charge of the State Swmmng Meet. Ths commttee s currently composed of Charman Alfred M. Reece of the U. K. faculty, Mr. E. W. Crak of Lousvlle, Coach M. J. Edwn Kelly Thompson Presdent Kelly Thompson of the Western Kentucky State College, Bowlng Green, wll be the prncpal speaker at the annual dnner meetng of the K.H.S.A.A., scheduled to be held n the Crystal Ballroom of the Brown Hotel, Lousvlle, at 6:00 P. M., Aprl 2. The subject of Mr. Thompson's talk wll be "Whose Responsblty?" Kelly Thompson has devoted twenty-eght of hs forty-seven years to workng for Western. All hs efforts durng hs mature lfe have been expended consstently n the nterest of the college he now heads. He was elected presdent of Western on October 7, 955, to serve as the thrd presdent of the college n ts ffty year hstory. He had served as assstant to Dr. Paul L. Garrett, presdent of the college, from 946 untl Dr. Garrett's death n 955. Mr. Thompson entered Western as a freshman n the fall of 928. By the followng sprng, Dr. H. H. Cherry, the frst presdent of the college, had employed the Lebanon, Kentucky, natve as a part-tme feld representatve. He attended classes and contnued as a successful representatve untl hs graduaton n 935. Followng graduaton, he was apponted publc relatons drector, the frst person to hold ths poston at the college. Mr. Thompson contnued hs dutes n publc relatons untl 944, when he entered the Unted States Navy. He served n the Navy's educaton program untl he was dscharged n 946 wth the rank of Leutenant, Senor Grade. Upon hs return to Western, Mr. Thompson was apponted assstant to

Long an actve member of the Bowlng Green Kwans Club and promnent n the actvtes of the Kentucky-Tennessee Dstrct of Kwans nternatonal, Mr. Thompson was elected Dstrct Governor n 952. after havng twce served as Leutenant Governor of the dstrct's Dvson 2. He has served on numerous state educatonal and cvc commttees, and he has been a cvc leader n Bowlng Green for more than twenty-fve years. When the Oho Valley Conference was formed n 948, Mr. Thompson was apponted publc relatons drector of the league. He managed the conference's annual tournament, held n Lousvlle each sprng, through 955, and the annual Kentucky nvtatonal Tournament, also held n Lousvlle durng the Chrstmas holdays. Mr. Thompson marred Sarah Pearce of Bowlng Green n 930. They have three chldren : Pattye, twenty, now teachng n the Fort Campbell school system ; Hardn, eghteen, a sophomore at Western; and Kelly. We Quote Sdelne Coachng n the edtoral of the October, 956, ssue of The Pa'thlete, Dr. Frank P. Magure related that at a recent meetng n a dscusson of rules forbddng sdelne coachng, one of the coaches remarked, "s t all rght for us to attend the games?" Recent events warrant a contnuaton of the dscusson. f sports have an educatonal objectve as part of a school, we cannot see any reason why they should be gven wholly dfferent treatment from any other department. We have often sad that the sports feld of the school s just another classroom. The coach s the teacher, the athlete s the pupl. Practce sessons are class sessons. But the day of the game s the test. n any classroom when pupls are beng tested, the teacher gves no assstance. The teacher s testng to dscover how well he has taught. The test of the coach's ablty s how well the athletes do n the contest. So perhaps f the coach perssts n helpng the athletes n the test, he should be placed n the grandstand. We have always contended that the success of a coach cannot entrely be measured n the won and lost column any more than the teacher can be measured by test results alone. There are other measures of success. The natve ablty of the pupl or athlete must be consdered. We would hardly expect a good teacher to have superor results n teachng advanced subjects to pupls of low.q. And n sports such tems as schedules must be consdered. f schools schedule contests wth opponents of lke potental, a won and lost record s all we should expect over a perod of years. Coachng from the sdelnes has developed evasve maneuvers as restrctons by rule have been made. We remember the day when teams lned up n formaton, the quarterback barked the sgnals and play was under way. Then came the huddle, and wth t all knds of gestculatons by the coach and fnally the employment of messenger boys who dashed n and out between every play. Ths s dangerous n that snce one coach usually loses, he has no one to blame but hmself for the defeat because he called the play. Ths year came the development of the applcaton of scence of electroncs n football wth rado communcaton establshed between the coach and team. For the professonals who used t temporarly we have no crtcsm for the sngle objectve of the professonal s fnance. For schools who play for an educatonal objectve, t s the heght of absurdty. Fortunately, the professonals outlawed t. But we have no doubt of ts return n perfected form. We only hope the wave length jammers wll be able to totally confuse those who use t. We are quotng from an edtoral of October 6, 956, wrtten by Chet Smth, sports edtor of the Pttsburg Press. "There can no longer be any doubt that football s gettng far too modern and complex for ts own good. Unless t s quckly taken n hand t wll soon be sendng youths out nto the world who wll be of no earthly use to themselves or anybody else unless they are tuned n to the proper wave length. "The transmsson of sgnals and other nstructons from the bench to the feld by way of rado has done t. Wthout a strong stand by those who have the future of the game at heart the death knell of rugged ndvdualsm on the grdron has been sounded." We beleve the use of rado s the fnal chapter n coachng from the sdelnes. Unless coaches reverse the trend themselves, we predct that for school boy athletcs, more severe rules restrctons. Small wonder that Kentucky s referred to as "The Sportsmanshp Captol of the Naton," when reports of sports offcals ndcate that only three per cent of our hgh school coaches leave somethng to be desred n sportsmanshp practces. Ths s qute a credt to the athletcs program of the secondary schools of the Commonwealth. From Wlam 0. Utley, "The Debonar," halng from Madsonvlle, come some remnscences occasoned when ths veteran retred offcal read our recent column on past experences n the offcatng feld. nstead of "Bll," possbly we should have referred to hm all these years as "Obe," snce we have nformaton that hs mddle name s Obadah. Here are some of "Obe's" thoughts from the past. Says "Obe". "n 928. offcated the red hot game between Nebo and Sebree wth a hugh crowd of forty-two fans n attendance wth the game endng Sebree 23 - Nebo 2, and my leavng the gymnasum wth $3.40 for my efforts. "n 929, when Slaughters lost to Dxon by 5 to 3, carred home all of $2.50, called twenty-eght fouls all by myself, and the newspapers sad that t was the roughest game seen snce Paul Revere's Rde. "My frst dstrct tourney was n 929, nvolved ten games, and was pad $0 for offcatng the whole meet. dd fne because my hotel and food bll was only and was eatng turkey all the tme. was really happy about beng able to make all ths money n two days and nghts. n 930, when Earlngton pasted Nebo to the tune of 8 to 6, was really on my way to rches, collectng $4 for two games, and n 937, offcatng wth Loue "The Great" Ltchfeld n the Pennyrle Tournament, we handled fourteen teams n a four-day affar and were rewarded wth checks for $2.50." "Obe" goes on to say that hs most enjoyable tournament was the State Meet n Lexngton n 944 when he worked the entre tournament wth Edgar McNabb. That's understandable because anybody who ever worked wth "Ole Relable" says the same thng. "Obe" Utley s now on the shady sde of ffty years, s a grandfather to two lttle grls, and s a Shrner of promnence. Just an afterthought, Wllam Obadah Utley s Bll Utley man ever worked wth n a state tournament, but s also one of the ncest chaps anybody wll ever meet. From Dck Looney, "The Sage of the Kentucky Mountans," come stores of herosm of the people of Pkevlle and the surroundng mountan areas as they dug out of the mud and lfted themselves up by ther boot straps after the recent terrble flood. Dck, who s one of the greats among Kentucky's basketball offcals, recommends Maytown Hgh School and McDowell Hgh School for the Abou Ben Adhem Ctaton because of outstandng courteous treatment of offcals. Dck ponts outt hat, due to the flood, he was the only referee able to make t for the bg game at McDowell, and wth these two teams beng natural rvals, anythng mght have happened had not sportsmanshp made t possble for the 200-pounder to work the game alone. Not only does Dck commend the schools and the crowd for ther excellent conduct, but he calls for Corn Cob Ppes to go to George Moore and Estll Hall, prncpal and coach, respectvely, of Mc- Dowell Hgh School, and Edwn Stewart and Ray Hensch, prncpal and coach, respectvely, at Maytown Hgh School. Vc Brzendne and Jack Thompson are loud n ther prases of the schools n the Salt Rver Valley Conference. Vc and Jack, who worked ths tournament at Bloomfeld, sad they would stack the neghborly atttude and sportsmanshp of West Pont, Shepherdsvlle, Lebanon Juncton, Mt. Washngton,

The Dutchman can go along wth that, knowng such leaders n that area as Charle Rawlngs, Erne Ruby, Lloyd Haydon, Charle Pearce, "Red" Anderson. Glen Smth, Lloyd Mullns, Joe Hall and E. C. Brown. An Abou Ben Adhem Certfcate to the teams of the Salt Rver Valley Conference s on ts way to Vc Brzendne, who wll make proper presentaton. Somethng just occurred to me. Vc Brzendne and Bll Utley are alke n many respects. Both offcate a basketball game exactly alke, both are mmaculate n dress and appearance, wth the only dfference beng Vc gets an awful lot more for hs whstlng than "Obe" used to, and Vc s not a grandpa. More complments from basketball offcals to Kentucky's school men! "Energetc" Al Gustafson reports that he and "Speedy" Dave Longenecker have only the hghest prase for the conduct of everybody connected wth athletcs at Lafayette and Harrodsburg. Somethng new was added to good neghbor practces here when Agge Sale nvted Dave and Al to an after-game snack n the school cafetera and there they found both the vctor and the vanqushed munchng on hamburgers, cheese, donuts and mlk. Says Al. " have seen a lot of sportsmanshp practces, but ths goes everythng one better when the wnners and the losers can st down and dgest food happly together after a ball game. Ths type of hosptalty can only mean better school relatons and fner characters developed n our boys who play the game." The name of Blly W. Omer n Western Kentucky has just about the same meanng n that secton today as that of rvn S. Cobb several decades ago. Blly s possessed of outstandng leadershp qualtes and s makng hs nfluence felt for the mprovement off offcatng n hs area. Hs jokes also excel those of Carlos Oakley and Joe B. Mansfeld. who also has been readng our com- Blly, parson of fees pad offcals "back yonder" and now, thnks that a precedent has been set n the dstrct tournament at Henderson, where four offcals have been hred at $20 a game each to handle the contests. t's a cnch that Blly s correct when he says that a better brand of offcatng should be presented n Dstrct No. 0 because wth four offcals workng, they wll be much fresher than f only two were employed as s usually the custom. John Ramey nforms us that the Senor Scouts of Pkevlle are makng an effort to sponsor ther annual East-West All-Star Basketball Game at the Fargrounds Freedom Hall n Lousvlle durng the week of June 2. Our old frend, Vernon Johnson, of Mt. Sterlng, s expected to be one of the offcals n ths game. Durng the past nne years, all of these games have been played n towns n Eastern Kentucky. Here are some questons and answers on basketball rulngs: Answerng Turner Elrod's queston concernng whether or not tme can expre on a jump ball, the answer s "no". t may expre mmedately after the clock starts when the ball s tapped, but not before. Charle rwn, the ramblng arbter of Hop Town, wants to know f free thrower A-l ntentonally msses hs free throw n an attempt to gan control of the ball by throwng t hard aganst the basket rm, has he been gulty of a volaton? The answer agan s "no". Formerly, the rules stated that an honest effort for the free throw had to be made, but no more. He s a man of many moods, sometmes pleadng, then demandng, sometmes knd and understandng, and then lke an enraged tger when thngs are not gong so well. He may be found n a varety of places such as a frst ad room, at a banquet for the alumn, or on the sdelne of a grdron. You won't be able to dentfy hm by physcal appearance, because he may be one of many szes, shades, or facal shapes. However, he wll usually be seen wearng an old trench coat and a hat whch s usually a veteran of many ball games and fshng trps. He s a mastermnd at nventng new drlls and callng plays of whch no one seems to have heard. He appears to get a great deal of pleasure out of seeng sweat farly pour off some hard-workng, drt-eatng tranee, (or should we say "vctm"). He loves to hold two-hour scrmmages and wnd sprnts are hs favorte form of torture. Hs by-words are "Down! Hup!" He doesn't seem to care for sck or njured players, busted assgnments, soft stomachs, players' grl frends, or the losng end of a game. No other human can tell so many funny stores about hs playng days or fnd so much fault n hs "bread-and-butter" boys than ths "All Amercan Man." Ths man has a job to do, and has enough responsblty to cope wth wthout crtcsm and offers of unwanted help from wellmeanng outsders who only hnder nstead of help hm n hs job. Despte hs seemngly hard and cruel dsposton on the practce feld, he s every boy's frend, helper, and hero. These players fall to the floor at the slghtest contact from an opposng player sometmes wthout contact and then look appealngly at the offcal. f the offcal calls the foul, a satsfed smle breaks out ; f the foul s not called, there s a look of njured dsdan. Such conduct tends to provoke dsrespect for the decsons of the offcals because the home fans usually support such players, and the opposng fans often become hghly ndgnant n games where a pont or two

Lke the story of the boy who cred "Wolf" when there was no wolf, such players damage themselves n the eyes of many spectators and may also damage others n the game by makng the work of the offcals more dffcult. Fegnng a foul n basketball s somewhat smlar to fegnng an njury to stop the clock n football. n each case the acton of the player s an attempt to gan an advantage by msrepresentaton. Our sports program should not teach that t s good practce to lay asde the truth n order to gan an advantage n a contest. T.S.S.A.A. News. Reboundng n Basketball The placng of opponents of the free thrower n each of the frst two alleys has made the penalty for a common foul less severe. The reason s that a greater number of rebounds are secured by opponents of the free thrower. Automatcally, ths has an nfluence on the amount of congeston n the area near the basket and t could have an nfluence on sze of score and number of fouls commtted. Statstcs have been secured for early season tournament games. The followng conclusons are warranted from a study of data for approxmately 00 tournament games n the states of llnos, ndana and South Dakota. The total number of personal fouls commtted by both teams s about the same as for last year. The number of total ponts scored per game s about 7% less than for last year. After free throws, the ball remaned alve for reboundng about 6 tmes per game. of the 6 rebounds were by the free thrower's opponent and 5 of them were by the free thrower's teams. Thus, the opponents dd 68'- of the reboundng. Ths compares wth a reboundng of 57' * n prevous years when postons n the frst alley were alternated. Ths lesser number of rebounds secured by the free thrower's team automatcally lessens the severty of the penalty for a common foul. Based on computaton of last year's value of a penalty, after allowance s made for the customary value of possesson, the net value of the bonus penalty s now.57 (slghtly more than half a pont). Whch s the most valuable poston for reboundng? To answer ths, statstcs were secured on the rebounder's poston durng free throws. 50% of all reboundng was by a player n the frst alley. A free thrower's teammate n the second alley rebounded 29% of the tme. The free thrower's opponent n the thrd alley rebounded 8% of the tme and the free thrower hmself rebounded 3% of the tme. For each game, there were about 96 rebounds after unsuccessful tres for feld goal. Of these, the opponent of the thrower rebounded 59'<' of the tme and teammates of the thrower rebounded 4%. of the tme. Durng the reboundng after tres for feld goal, a personal foul occurred 3 '< of the tme. Reboundng was followed almost mmedately by the scorng of a feld goal about 0 '< of the tme. Thus, an unsuccessful try for feld goal resulted n fouls or a follow-up goal about 23'- of the tme. These fouls have a bearng on the atttude whch should be taken toward certan other rules proposals. Ths ncludes the suggeston that the penalty for a common foul should be one free throw only durng the early part of each half. There s also a relatonshp to the suggeston that rebounds should be reduced by requrng that the ball be tapped out of the free throw lane area before a second try s permtted. The relatonshp to the further lessenng of the penalty for a common foul s obvous. The net value of a penalty for such foul under present rules s only about.57 of a pont. There are certan to be some objectons to further reducng ths net worth snce there s a pont whch would make t proftable to commt fouls except as players are restraned by fear of beng dsqualfed because of the fve-foul lmt. The relatonshp to a reducton of number of rebounds s less obvous but s no less mportant. f t s desred to reduce the advantage of the extremely tall player, one method would be to requre that the ball be tapped out of the congested area before a second try can be attempted. t seems obvous that ths would have a drect nfluence n reducng the 23 7o of the tmes a rebound s followed by a personal foul or by the scorng of a feld goal whch some basketball authortes regard as a "cheap" basket. New Look For 6-Man Football THE TWO-THOUSAND hgh schools whch nclude 6-Man Football n ther athletc program wll fnd that somethng has been added for the 957 season. n addton to several mportant changes whch have also been made because of revson of the -Man rules, there are three sgnfcant changes whch apply only to the 6-Man game. THE CLEAR PASS requrement n 6-Man s the major dfference from the -Man game. Before any runnng play can occur, the snap recever must pass the ball to gve defense reasonable opportunty to analyze the type of advance whch s to be attempted. Over the years, there have been suggestons for modfyng the clear pass rule and expermentaton wth a revsed rule whch would permt a hand-off nstead of a clear pass. For 957, the clear pass must always be backward. Heretofore the clear pass could be n any drecton. THE REVSON of the clear pass rule s related to another revsed rule whch now treats a forward pass whch s completed or s ncomplete behnd the lne the same as any other forward pass. n former years, such a pass was consdered a backward pass n the 6-Man same. The forward pass n 6-Man s now the same as n -Man except that all 6-Man plavers are elgble to receve any forward pass. The relaton of ths change to the revsed clear pass rule s n the fact that the snap recever may now throw the ball forward the same as n the past but f he does toss the ball forward and t becomes ncomplete, the ball becomes dead mmedately. Under last year's rule, t mght have been recovered and advanced by any player of ether team snce t was then consdered a backward pass. THE KCK RULES revson s the thrd mportant change. n past years, the kck-off regulatons about rght of recovery and advance were the same as for a kck from scrmmage. Under ths year's rules, the rghts durng a kck-off are the same as those for any free-kck n the -Man game. Lkewse, the rghts durng a scrmmagekck are the same as those n the -Man game. f a free-kck s out of bounds, the recevng team takes the ball at the nbounds spot or on the yardlne whch s ten yards behnd the recever's kck-off lne. f the kckers recover ther own kck-off, they may retan possesson provded t s not a "short" kck-off. No far catch s permtted n the 6-Man game but the kckers are restraned from nterferng wth the catchng of any kck. The penalty for such nterference s loss of 5 yards but there s no far catch award. n addton to the three changes whch are prmarly 6-Man revsons, the recent - Man revsons have also been ncorporated n the 6-Man code.
