The ctzens of Rchmond are chefly worred, as should everyone be, that the Maj we oler two remnders to faculty members the assgnng of tests before an artst seres program should be avoded, and the over-runnng of tme n the fftymnute class perods should be watched more closely. The college annually makes arrangements for artst seres programs to enable students of l.ongwood to broaden and develop nterest n varous felds. The programs also brng to the students some of the naton's more noted personaltes and performers. Recently there have been two excellent artsl seres programs, but how many students attended? Very tew' Durng these performances, the audence very readly fell the embarrassment of havng only a "hand full" of students present. On the other hand, the artst lookng out from the nto hs small recepton, unquestonably felt the self-conscousness of the occason. The embarrassment the college feels lor exposng the artst to a small attendance, s also an undesred factor. What s the cause'.' Smply, students have to reman n the "dorms" to study for or quzzee assgned for the next 'lay nstead of attendng the programs n Jarman Mall. The assgnments of the teats are probably made, n every case, unntentonally and unwttngly by professors who do not refer to the schedulng of the programs. Ths artcle s beng wrtten only to serve as a remnder to faculty members to check twce before assgnng a test. f ths matter can he worked out satsfactorly, dents could ndeed gve the artst the welcome he d erv The next remnder comes n the matter 0 the prof retenton of classes heyond the ffty-mnute class perod. The matter agan concerns the unntentonal acton of the faculty,.many nstructors, at the end of a class perod, ad. on a few more mnutes n order to conclude the thought of the lecture, or n some ca.-es. 1,. fnsh reports beng made by students, On the other hand students themselves cause overtme 111 classes n that dscussons become nterestng, tme s complete!) forgotten. n these nstances, addtonal tme mav A Real (hrstmas To Faculty Members Chrtsmas sprt of reverence s beng overrun by the Chrstmas commercalzed sprt of gft gvng and celebraton. t s true that Chrstmas should be, to an exent, a tme of gaety and fun, however there are forces workng at ths moment n an attempt to profteer on our rejocng. We must awaken and realze ths problem before the true Chrstmas sprt s lost entrely. Durng the comng holday let's attempt to nstll n the mnds of our famly and frends the real sacred meanng of the celebraton of the brth of Jesus. Let your support of ths project be your Chrstmas gft to Chrst. be warranted, but what of the professors who contnually run over day after day? Ths practce nevtably forces students to arrve late to the next class, and ths acton does not always meet wth the approval of that nstructor. These two suggestons have been voced by many students. We hope that the crtcsms can be used constructvely. Statstcs Show Black shrouded death and festve, sparkly Chrstmas are strange companons.!ut they rde together on Amerca's streamng hghways, vyng for supremacy, for the lves of holday travelers. Thers s a s*ad struggle, one to gve joy and happness n seasonal celebratons; the other to brng pan and gref to homes and communtes. Each year, n ncreasng numbers, Death clams hs December prey, vctms of tragc hghway accdents. for Amercan college youth, the holday season s a hurry and bustle of gong home, partes, shoppng, trps, places to go, and thngs to do. And the vast majorty of all of ther holday jauntng wll be by automoble. n the holday haze surroundng ths month, drvers too often thoughtlessly take an extra chance or a needless rsk to gan a mle or a mnute... too often they lose a lfe. Statstcs have shown conclusvely the ncreased dangers and rate of accdents durng ths season. Now, before the last mnute rush, we who drve ears or wll be passengers n automobles for ths holday on. need to examne our own knowledge concernng hghway traffc accdents, and learn the \aros factors whch ncrease hghway dangers typcal wnter weather, exctement, preoccupaton wth last mnute thngs to do, ncreased speeds, rse n the amount of nght drvng, fatgue. W'fe..n use our facts and our ntellgence to lessen these dangers by applyng them to our own drvng habts. Rv takng the ordnary precautons or a few extra mnutes, motorsts wll promote a happer and safer Chrstmaa. After all, Chrstmas s a tme of gvng don't take a chance wth lfe.
