Popularty Poll Mr., Mss Popularty Mss Eastern Are Ttles Dr. Jack Speaks On Phlosophy vtednesday nght at theeastern State College Faculty Round Table, Dr: Henry H. Jack of the Phlosophy Department of the Unversty of Kentucky, spoke on the subject, "Mental Dsbalance as a Challenge to Phlosophy." Accordng to Dr. Jack, the challenge to phlosophy whch has been created by the rapd rate of acentlfc growth n recent years" s a tremendous one." Although there has been for the past several decades a recognton of the crcular type of thnkng n the area of phlosophy ~ by the phlosophers themselves, t was the opnon of the speaker that nothng s beng done about t that phlosophers are neglectng the great ssues of contemporary socety. These crcumstances n regard to phlosophy are n great contrast to the straghtforward type of thnkng and accumulaton of knowledge that s present n the scentfc world. The profesaor expressed the opnon that, as yet, the mpact of scence on phlosophy has been slght that there seems to be an effort on the part of phlosophers to escape the great force created by the rapd rate of scentfc growth and development. 3 2 CASTBtN PROGRESS Frday, January 12.!» * EDTORALLY SPEAKNG Freedom Q& The Press Freedom of tre press has come to be one of the symbols of the Western world. On the campuses of Amercas colleges and unverstes, t has been exercsed and mte to yajpuj.degre.es, t has come to the place Where freedom of the press has a specfc meanng when the purpose of the newspaper s made known. Freedom of the press on a college campus of any sxe brngs wth t. other abstract words whch help t mantan a status. Some of these words nclude responsblty, mature judgment, and understandng. Taken ndvdually these words can compose the true meanng of freedom of the press. Responsblty means the realzaton of the power whch a paper welds, the audence whch the paper s to serve and the organzaton whch t s to represent. Mature judgement means the exercsng of the facltes of the mnd whch grow and bloom wth experence. The latter closely hnges on the ablty to understand and place all thngs n somewhat proper perspectve. Freedom of the press s not publshng everythng wthout regard to ts valdty, ts pertnence and ts purpose. Part of the job of the edtoral staff of every newspaper s ts rght to.sft and to make fnal decsons concernng all materal whch wll appear n prnt. Thusly, freedom of the press does not mean complete and utter acceptance of all wrtten and uttered words presented. Freedom of the press, as a part of the total college communty, needs no real rules of censorshp f the goal of the paper s to serve the students; and f the abstract words are all consdered wth the phrase, the lmtatons odfash^d, pep rayy. are set automatcally. 5 4 CASTWN PROGRESS Frday, January t, 1962 PROGRESS SPORTS EASTERN, MURRAY GAME SHOWS CALBER OF FLAT N O.V.C. f the 8280 upset wn by Murray here Monday nght s any ndcaton of the basketball to be played n the conference ths year, the loop crown s any teams for the takng. Murray, havng a young team, showed they cant be overlook as they dd what 38 straght teams couldnt do n beatng our Maroons n the Weaver Health Buldng. We have already shown what we can do or. four occasons, ncludng the Phllps game, and havent any justfable fears about the outcome of the season..wth Morehead and Western strong, the loop race could develop nto a duplcate of last seasons throeway tt between Eastern, Morehead and Wester:.. These three teams were preseason pcks to fnsh 123 wth Morehead leadng the pack. Ths season theres s a new voce n the crowd of ttle contenders. Tennessee Tech has a powerpacked outft that fell to Morehead by only sx ponts n the Eagles gym, qute a feat n ths tough league. The other two Tennessee teams cant be sold out, however, as East Tennessee and Mddle Tennessee could pose defnte threats to the record of any wouldbe conference wnner. Wt; all four Kentucky teams loaded and ready to go, Tennessee Tech wth the strongest Volunteer State team n a few years, and two other Tennessee teams upsethungry ths race could wnd up any way as the conference gets ready for wholesale acton n the followng weeks. JENNNGS SHOULD BE TREMENDOUS Jm Jennngs, the 66 sophomore that scored the wnnng ponts aganst us Monday nght shows promse of developng nto one of the best centers n the Oho Valley Conferences hstory. Th» youngster burned the nets on nne of 15 at Dougs Sports Beat wth DOUG WHTLOCK Progress Sports Edtor tempts from the feld for one of uw best shootng performance^ ot the game and connected on seven of 10 foul shots. He ted Russell Mueller for rebounds wth 11, but most of hs came on the defensve board where they dd the most harm. He war averagng 18.9 per game. ts not very often that you fnd a sophomore averagng over 20 ponts a game and over 10 rebounds game n the O.V.C. When you do, ts usually an ndcaton that he s gong to set the league on fre for three years. MURRAYS SHOOTNG WAS UNBELEVABLE Tv* corner saw somethng Monday nght that t ddnt expect ths season, that s, an opponent outshootng our Maroons. Murray dd t, though, and n convncng fashon. Murray domnated both phases of shootng by beatnjr :s 55.1 per cent to 38.0 from the feld, and 80.0 to 60.6 at the foul lne. These low percentagea droped our feld goal average to 39.6 per cjnt and cur foul shootng to 72.4, a far cry from the 81.0 per cent that was good for thrd n the naton a week ago. The amazng thng about ther foul shot percentage s that of the seven foul shots they mssed, three were by one player and no other man on the team mssed over one.al Vamas was very mpressve as he sank nne straght crucal foul shots before mssng one. t was ths foul shot shootng that pal off n tht end, for regardless of the feld goal shootng, we stll had three more buckets than they, but lubbed 28 to 20 at the lne. t cant be beleved, however, that Murray hts ha way all the tme. You dont fnd any team averagng over 55 per cent on all ther games, but t takes great potental to do t n one as the Racers du. A team wth ths potental can beat anyone on a gven nght. Murray Racers Break Maroons Wnnng Sken BV DOUG WHTLOCK The Murray Thoroughbreds proved Monday nght that the Eastern Maroons were not the only surprsng team n the Oho Valley Conference as they posted an 8280 wn over Eastern lo nap a wn streak at home at 38. The blow that klled Eastern came at the hands of one of Murrays four startng sophomores, Jm Jennngs. The 66 youngster connected on a 20 foot tumaround Jump dot Just as the horn sounded. fe tellng factor n the game w«s the shootng. The Racers ht 37 of 49 from the feld for «n exceptonal 55.1 per cent. Eastern ht three mor feld goals than dd Murray, but ther 30 of 79 attempts was good for only 38 per cent. The real payoff came on foul shots wth Murray httng 28 of 35 and Eastern 20 of 33. Easterns 58 to 35 edge n reboundng s very msleadng snce the Maroons mssed a large number of tps and the rebounds on Murrays end of the floor were tew and far between. Whle Eastern led n reboundng the Racers always seemed to come up wth crucal shots. The game started out as a feld goal exhangng affar, but then the Thoroughbreds paced by Jennngs and Robert Qoebel began httng the basket wt remarkable frequency. Full To Longest Lead They pulled to ther longest game lead wth 2:36 remanng n the frst half at 4533 on a Jumper by Jennngs, who led all scorers wth 25. n the fnal two mnutes Larry Parks and Ron Pckett went on a two man crusade and closed tne gap to 4639 at the half. The Maroons came out hot n the second perod and knotted the score at 49 all and went ahead, 5149 for ther frst load bnce a 43 advantage n the openng mnutes. Jennngs and Al Varnas put Murray on top for good as Murray swept to a 5651 lead and then pulled away to nne ponts at to set the stage for a valant, but futle drve for the Maroons. Herman Smth ht from 20 feet and as Murray wth two men out on fouls was tryng to get the ball up court Ray Gardner stole the ball and went n for a layup to moke the score 7873 wth 3:39 remanng. Larry Parks scored on a brllant tpn to make t 7875 at 3:08, but Joe Parker drove down the mddle for a snowbrd to make t 8075 at 1:52. n the remanng tme up to one second the Maroons held the Racers scoreless. Jm Werk ht from fve feet to close the gap to 8077 and Gardner came through wth another layup to move the Maroons to wthn one wth 51 seconds remanng. Freshmen Lose Followng 27 seconds of mad scramblng for the ball. Eastern was awarded possesson out of bounds and the Maroons called tme out. The ball had been back n play sx seconds when Len Mahoney fouled Russell Mueller to send the 66 junor to the foul lne wth 18 seconds left to^jhoot a one plus one. Mueller ht Be frst one to te t up but the second rolled off the rm. Murray got the rebound wth 16 seconds remanng and called tme. They put the ball nto play and seemed n no hurry to shoot.
