For of Wth deep snows n the moose and deer yards, guns and rfles, rods and landng nets lad away for another open season, nothng remans n the nature of beckonng woodland pleasures to dvert attenton from the approachng thrd bennal Sportsmen s ehbton, whch opens Washngton s brthday n Mechancs buldng. Decson to prepare for ths show and to open t on Feb. 22, 1902, for a three weeks run, was determned at a recent meetng of the Massachusetts Sportsmen s assocaton, an organzaton whch snce ts ncepton has dlgently endeavored to arouse an nterest n nature studes by ntroducng game anmals, game brds and game fshes nto closer relaton wth the people. The dual underlyng motves to enhance game protecton and to plant seeds whch shall ultmately sprout a desre for a zoologcal garden n Boston, prompted the organzaton of the assocaton, whch has for drectors such well-known gentlemen sportsmen as Paul Butler, Eben D. Jordan, T. Jefferson Cooldge, Jr., Col. Butler Ames, Capt. S. D. Parker, John E. Thayer, Francs B. Crownnsheld, Col. Percy Parker, Thomas W. Lawson, John T. Burnett, Samuel J. Elder, John C. Watson, E. J. Wardwell, Francs Sknner, Jr., Edward Read and C. W. Dmck. Not n van has the assocaton entreated publc sympathy and attenton. Approval of ts efforts to entertan, to educate and to engender a desre for a permanent publc zoo n Boston was emphatcally pronounced n 1S98, and agan n 1900, when for the frst and second tme cty born New Englanders who had never heard beagles hlarous on a rabbt scent, or to whom menton of wld fowl meant nothng more than a spear-shaped lne on the sky, were enabled to study our New England fauna from lfe. In prevous ehbtons the assocaton confned ts ehbt to the game anmals, brds and fshes of the Unted States, but ths tme because of an ntenton to encourage the propagaton of foregn game speces, fshes from Bermuda, from Porto Rco and Cuba, and brds and deer from England, Hungary, E u s t s M a n e. These collectons were commenced more than eght months ago, and already there are 10 brds and anmals, acclmated and n good health, awatng the comng of Washngton s brthday. These 10 are all foregners, and the number wll very soon be augmented by consgnments now on the way to Boston. Such eperments n game propaga on at the great ton as those carred Austn Corbn Blue Mountan forest preserve n New Hampshre, the largest of ts knd n the world, ncludng as t does parts of four townshps, and coverng some thrty odd mles of terrtory, the George J. Gould preserve n the Adrondacks, and the Dr. W. Seward Webb estate at Shelburne, V t., the assocaton would lke to see encouraged, consequently etreme care has been eercsed n the selecton of foregn knds for mportaton. One of the prncpal features of the show wll be an object lesson n the evoluton cf the sportng gun and the mltary rfle. Long after the tme of Bacon and Schwartz, the, monk, all frearms were too cumbersome and un: trustworthy for huntng game. From the prmtve frearms the match lock and musket were developed, and from about the tme when the sportng gun came nto use the hstory of frearms, to be demonstrated at the show by what s probably the best collecton n ths country, wll begn. As n prevous shows, there wll be varous kuds of sports whch ft nto the recreaton requrements of such an ehbton. The entre floor space usually used for the show area at the horse shows wll be occuped by an artfcal lake. Ths wll be twce as large as the water surface n prevous shows, for aud wll gve better opportunty canoe racng and other water sports. Nothng lke the fsh collecton n contemplaton has ever before been attempted. Government and state hatcheres \vll ad n ths department, and through the efforts of Prof. Charles L. Brstol of New York unversty, many strange but beautful specmens from tropcal waters have been secured. There are already at the New York aquarum awatng shpment these specmens from Bermuda: Spotted hnds, surgeon fsh, groupers, angel fsh, spny lobsters, crab, trunk f^b, hog fsh, common rock fsh, blue surgeon fsh, spot snappers, grass porge, prncess rock fsh, squrrel.fsh, yellow-tal, common Burgeon fsh, blue strped, grunts, four eyes, trgger fsh, mud parrot fsh, queen trgger fsh, yellow grunt, bream and gray snappers. The man hall wll be devoted to the ehbton of fsh and game. Among the wld fowl wll be seen a large number of canvas-back ducks an unusual sght at spotsmen s ehbton. Headquarters of the assocaton s at 216 Washngton street. Mr. Charles W. Dmck s manager and Mr. Francs B. Crownngsheld, treasurer. \ Overrun by Skunks. The people of SlaaD-atteaqjg assure the outsders that the story of the numerous skunks that nfest that localty s no dream, or fary tale. They hardly dare to go out of ther houses for fear of meetng these odorous malefactors. One famly reports seeng 15 of the unwelcome creatures holdng a councl of war recently. Suts of clothes hang out on clothes lnes for weeks wthout the slghtest danger of ther beng stolen. The ar s so flled wth the unmstakable skunk sgns that even mcrobes have left the place n dsgust. The other nght an electrc car ran over one of the crtters and, well, the wves of those men dd not accuse them that nght of havng been to the club. Yell Bewldered Hm. Frank Haley and Charle Kennston were on the rdge back of S. G. Haley s camp recently when a deer came n sght. Both boys began to bark and yell for all they were worth when the deer started to run and the unearthly sounds bewldered the buck so that he turned around and takng hs back track ran wthn shootng dstance and Haley dropped hm. Ran Stopped Huntng. Hon. Joel Wlbur of Phllps and H. G. Turner of Ashcroft, Mass., Mr. and ther gude, Eben Harnden returned from camp on the Mooselookmeguntc after a one day s hunt. They crossed the lake by Stony Batter and n a short tme started a buck whch Mr. Turner shot. Ran and crust prevented huntng longer and the party had to be satsfed wth what they had. Moose Head Sent to Egypt. The Crosby Co., of Bangor, tadermsts, have sent to Mr. Ernest G. Foote n Caro, Egypt, a moose head, whch he had secured n the Mane woods. LOANED HIS GUIDE. Gude Has Record o f Two Moose on One Trp. [Specal Correspondence to the M ane W oods.] A sh lan d, Dec. 21, Mr. F. J. Horne of Nut ey, N. J., has been spendng hs fourth soason at Peterson & McKay s camps. The frst year he went home before the open season moose began; the second year he mssed hs moose, and the last two years he has secured a moose each year. Ths year s prze had a spread of antlers 50 nches and wth twenty ponts. Each season he has secured hs two deer. Mr. BraneofNew York Cty has been here on hs frst bg game huntng trp. After gettng two large deer hs gude, McGowan, was taken sck and had to go out of the woods. Ths was a great dsappontment to Mr. Brane, as he wanted very much to get a moose. But Mr. Horne, who had already taken hs moose, generously offered to loan hm hs gude, Geo. Clayton. As a result, he brought down a moose almost as good as that of hs frend, Mr. Horne. Clayton thus gets the credt of gudng two men t moose on one trp. COONS, MINK, BABBITS. Anmals That Mght Be Secured For the Sportsmen s Shows. To The Edtor of the Mane Woods: Could you tell me of any one that would buy lve wld anmals, such as coons, mnk and rabbts? I have just got four coons and have found another large den. I dd not know but someone would want them to send to the sports men s show. Hopng you wll know of someone. I reman yours truly, M. W. Chapm an. Starks, Me., Dec. 19, Cow Moose Slaughtered. A wholesale slaughter of cow moose s reported by Game Warden Pollard of Focroft. He found two of the anmals lyng dead but a few feet apart, and only a few rods away were three others. All had been shot and an nvestgaton convnced hm that one person had done all the shootng. He was also convnced that the person was a gude. He says he has some clue to the poacher. AFTER TH E FIGURES To Show Number of Deer Klled Durng Year. Gettng Reports From Dfferent Sectons. Charman Carleton, of the fsh and game commsson, s engaged n preparng an estmate of the number of deer and moose klled n Mane legally and llegally, so far as t s possble to obtan the fgures. Besdes the reports of regstered gudes and sportng camp propretors, whch are requred to be made by the 15th of December, Mr. Carleton s dependng upon town clerks n places where there are no gudes for nformaton. He has already sent out queres to 150 town clerks and has receved answers from two-thrds of them. He beleves that when hs fgures are all n and tabulated the result wll be the nearest and most authentc estmate yet made. Of course Mr. Carlton cannot ascertan the number of deer klled llegally and eaten n the woods, but he can enumerate the carcasses whch have been found n close tme and when he adds them together he wll fnd they make no nconsderable number. In speakng about the matter Mr. Carleton says: The delay n the recept of mal from the east s somewhat hnderng the complaton of fgures whch we are preparng, showng the number of bg game klled the season just closed. There must be a hundred letters for ths department n the eastern mals. Regstered gudes and sportng camp propretors as a rule lve n the east, as you undoubtedly know. That part of Mane s our game country. Notwthstandng ths delay the returns have come n splenddly. The gudes are not requred to report untl December 15, the end of the open season. There are at present 1,800 regstered gudes, and thus far we have receved returns from more than 1,600 of them. Before the end of ths week I beleve we shall have, the report of every gude who dd any work durng the season. We have sent out postal cards to town clerks n 150 places n the game country and have receved more than 100 reples. From these varous sources of nformaton we epect to be able to gve a pretty relable statement as to the number of deer and moose klled durng open season. The method of obtanng the nformaton s as complete as t s possble to make t. Each gude covers certan terrtory and works durng the season for certan hunters. H e must report all game known by hm to have been klled. The game wardens also assst n collectng these statstcs. Here s a report from Rangeley. In that town, the report says, 200 deer were klled, the past season, by resdents of the town. Very few hunters from abroad go there. In Eusts and four other places adjonng the number of deer klled was 0. There were 19 deer klled n the town of Dfeld, 0 n Damarscotta and 15 n Mt. Vernoo. SPO RTSM E N S SU PPLIE S. Of course there have been great numbers of deer klled llegally, the number of whch no record can be obtaned. Stll t wll be qute a record whch wll be shown when our fgures are tabulated. Wnether the total wll equal the estmate made by some of the papers I cannot say at present. 1 see t s stated that the legally and llegally klled deer fhs year wll appromate 25,000. I don t know upon what nformaton these fgures are based and hence cannot tell as to ther accuracy. Snce the storm I have receved telegrams from a number o f persons who have been sthlled n the woods wth deer that were shot before Saturday nght. They can t get them moved, as traffc s suspended over east. And so they ask for permsson to brng them out as soon as the ralroads begn runnng agan. No permsson can be gven, nor s t necessary, for the law provdes that those kllng game n open tme must remove the same wthn a reasonable tme. If no transportaton can be secured, through no fault of the sportsmen, reasonable tme s allowed them by the provsons of the law. AT PETERSON & MCKAY S Camps In Mooseland Tll He Gets a Moose. [Specal correspondence to tle Mane Woods.] A sh lan d, Dec. 23, You have not had the reports for all who have been here for the game season, so wll gve you some of the later ones. Mr. E. W. Lovejoy of Lowrell has been n our secton durng s huntng seasons and has s bull moose to hs credt. He stays a full month each year. He goes nto the moose terrtory and camps rght there tll he gets one. Ths year he found hs moose as usual and also two deer. J. D. McKay was hs gude. Messrs. Eugene Nelson and Arthur Robnson of Malden were among the late vstors. Each took out one deer after a week s hunt. They went to Round Mountan camp. When they came out there was about three and onehalf feet of snow. The most of ther huntng was done on snowshoes. Ther gudes were F. A. McNally and Arthur Wnslow. Messrs. Peterson and McKay are now gettng n ther supples and makng mprovements preparatory for the net season. THE BANGOR LETTER. How Some o f the Hunters Get Hopes Game Ther Moose. Wll He Hunted W th Camera Instead of Gun. [Specal correspondence to the Mane Woods.] Ba n g ok, Dec. <, Tomorrow wll be Chrstmas day the merrest and jollest day of the year and here s wshng a Merry Chrstmas and a Happy New Year to every reader of M a n e W oods and hopng that they wll lve to eperence many more of the yule tde joys and, ncdentally, pass through many more happy huntng seasons and pleasurable fshng ecursons. All that now remans of Mane s greatest huntng season s the memory and from some of the stores that I have heard n the past week I am nclned to thnk that f most of the talkers would content themselves wth huntng only n close tme and that around the stove the grocery store they would have a deal better luck than they now do. Certanly I have heard of some of the bggest deer and moose of the season klled n the week that has now gone by men who 1 know postvely ddn t have a gun to ther shoulder for the entre season. But what s the odds? By the tme they ve told the story a few more [tmes they wll be frmly convnced of the truth of the tale. There probably was no set of men n all of New England that were more glad to see the last day of the game season than were the epress messengers on the Bangor & Aroostook ralroad runs and the Bangor and Boston run. It s no fun to handle anywhere from 35 to 100 deer and from one to a dozen moose a day n a small and crowded epress car and that s what the game season meant to these men. As the season was the largest on record the amount of work that they had to do was consderably ncreased over prevous years, Stll they handled t and so far as known not a sngle pece of game went astray n the entre eleven weeks of the season, whch s qute a record. A story that s worth repeatng from Gulford as to how a man up that way shot hs moose. The man n quest'on was out deer huntng when he came upon the tracks of a bull moose. He started n pursut of the anmal and followed t for about a mle and a half when t was suddenly crossed by another a great deal fresher moose tral. He, naturally, decded to take up and follow the second track, whch he dd. He had scarcely gone a hundred yards when there loomed up n front of hm the antlered head of hs lordshp, the moose. He wasn t a frst-class shot, but the hunter took a shot. It struck the anmal but glanced and dd no harm. The old fellow shook hmself and swung round as f to run away and a second shot was sent after hm. Ths, lke the frst, took effect but was not a fatal wopnd. It dd, however, make the moose a bt angry and he swung around to see who t was that was annoyng hrq. He never found out, for when he was farly broadsde to, the rfle spoke agan and the ball crashed through hs shoulder blade and he toppled over dead. A deer ran through the streets of the cty n the outskrts on Frday. It broke ts leg and E. H. Gerrsh, the canoe man, shot t n order to put t out of ts msery. Not long ago one of the state papers used up a column of space to tell how much better t would be f people would only stop huntng deer and moose wth a gun. In readng that t recalled to my mnd a conversaton wth Commssoner Carleton one afternoon about two years ago as we were salng up Moosehead lake n company wth Professor Shelds, edtor of Recreaton. Naturally the talk swung around to the subject of of fsh and game protecton. Mr. Carleton sad:. You may thnk me vsonary, gentlemen, but I honestly epect to see the day when there wll be very few men go nto the woods n search for game armed wth a gun. As each of you know every day sees the number of men who are usng a camera ncreasng and as a rule, t matters not how enthusastc a sportsman the owner of the camera s, after he has used the pcture makng bo for a tme he comes to feel that he would rather have a pcture of the deer or moose alve and have t hung n hs study n preference to the best head that ever grew on deer or moose, for beng a true sportsman he feels better at havng the game alve n the woods. It s ths feelng that makes me feel ths way n regard to the future of game protecton. Mane has a good supply of deer and moose and once the sportsmen are converted to the dea of photographng nstead of kllng them then wll the gude who knows where they are to be found have all the busness that he can attend to and then, too, wll the queston of game protecon be settled for all tme. Ths condton of affars may not come, though I beleve t wll whle I lve, but t s comng just as sure as we are lvng, breathng men today. M. Questons to Re Dscussed at Bangor on Jan. 7. The meetng of the Mane Sportsmen s assocaton, whch wll be held n Bangor, Jan. 7. promses to be one of the most successful meetngs of the knd ever held n the State. At ths meetng wll be dscussed the queston of securng the passage of a law mposng a ta of $10 a year on all hunters comng nto the state to, hunt bg game. A lst of speakers has been made out. Not all wll speak n favor of a lcense for hunters. Many wll speak n favor of the scheme, but others wll oppose t. Cnarman Carleton wll open the dscusson n an elaborate speech n support of the proposton. He wll contend that other states and other countres, wherever game abounds, ta hunters and that Mane must do so n order to protect the game resources that now make the state the game paradse of Amerca. The other speakers wll nclude Hon- H. M. Heath, Augusta; Hon. A. M. Spear, Gardner; Colonel E. C. Farrngton, Augusta; Hon. Geo. D. Bsbee, bee, Rumford; Senator Macfarlane, Greenvle; Hon. Joseph C. Holman, Farmngton; Edtor James W. Brackett, Phllps; Hon. W m. T. Hanes, Watervlle; Hon. Jesse M. Lbby, Mechanc Falls; Forrest Goodwn, Esq., Skowhegan; Hon. John F. Sprague, Monson; Hon. Wllam Engel,' Col. Isaah K. Stetson and Charles E. Oak, Bangor, and others. The opposton to the proposed ta upon hunters wll endeavor to make tself felt at the meetng. The sentment of ths sde s forcbly epressed by the followng from a Frankln county man: The dea of tang out-of-the-state huuters s smply monstrous. These fellows come down here from all parts of the country, and they leave thousands of dollars wth the people of Mane, and f they ta them for comng here to hunt, they wll go a lttle farther and not stop untl they get to Canada, where the huntng s just as good as t s n the state of Mane. Then New Hampshre s a state where there s good huntng and many of them wll stop there. Now that we have a majorty of the sportsmen comng here, we want them to contnue. W e shall not know how much money they leave n Mane untl they stop comng, and then t wll be too late to try to recover what we have lost. I thnk the bg game s now well protected, and f more money s needed let the legslature furnsh t. On the other sde answer wll be made to ths argument about as follows: In the frst place, Mane owns ts game, and has a perfect rght to protect t n any way she sees ft; secondly, the appropraton of $25,00 each year for the fsh and game s not suffcent,, but t s well known that t s of no use to ask the legslature to approprate another cent. Of the amount now at the dsposal of the commsson, $20,000 s needed for the fsh nterests alone. There s no doubt that the people wll contnue to approprate $25,000 yearly, but that s the lmt. In order to protect the bg game, more money s needed, and there s no practcal way to obtan t ecept by a ta on hunters. Agan, a large majorty of those who come to Mane to hunt are perfectly wllng to contrbute $10, or any reasonable ta, when t s understood that ths money s to be used for the protecton of game. In some states the ta s as hgh as $25, and for Mane to ask a contrbuton of $10 each from those who come nto the state to hunt s only reasonable and ju st. Kennebec Journal. Rucks at Eusts. H., Dec. 23, To the Edtor of the Mane Woods: In your ssue of Dec. 13, I fnd an artcle relatng to chargng a lcense for all nonresdents to hunt game n your state, and as I take t, t was a measure suggested to protect the game. Now n my vew that would certanly lessen the kllng of ganpe to a great etent but not to protect t wholly from unlawful kllng. There are a large number of sportsmen who go nto Mane woods that are of lmted means, and who by careful economy lay up enough to spend two or three weeks n your state, whch f they are to be charged ^ lcense fee, wll not be able to vst you, therefore the money they have n former years placed n the hands of your camp owners and gudes, ralroads, hotels and, n fact, grocers, etc., all wll feel the effect of such a law, for there are many true sportsmen who are not game hogs and who take pleasure n vstng your state once a year, and wth the present estng laws no doubt would come agan. Twelve consecutve years n Mane woods, whch has been my eperence, has taught me the real need of such laws that wll protect the game and all true sportsmen. Two thngs to protect, but a law to protect a game hog would be n my opnon to shut hm out entrely. When a party of from eghteen to twenty-four wat untl the frst of November before comng to Mane and then brng a carload of tonnage wth them and not spend a cent wth any of your people, n my opnon some act should be made by the legslature to prohbt hm from those prvleges whch a true sportsman should be enttled to. For the past fve years there has been a party from one of our western states that has done ths same thng. Ths has come under my own personal observaton and ths same party has carred out of the state from 25 to 30 deer each year. But why should a true New England sportsman be made to pay a lcense fee because such game hogs nvade your state? I am aware t s hard to make a law where t s necessary to dscrmnate but I thnk due consderaton should be gven the matter before such a law as chargng a lcense fee for all nonresdents should even be brought before the legslature. The task whch our fsh and game commssoners have to bear s no easy one and no doubt the money approprated by the state for the protecton of the fsh and game has not been suffcent to appont more game wardens. The wrter n your paper asserts t wll be made up by chargng ths lcense fee and the game hogs be brought more closely under the law. Would t not be more to the nterest of the state f the present law mght be made to read that all sports n comng from out the state should be under the same rules whch govern the month of October makng t apply from the open season untl the close and by so dong brng at least a lttle revenue nto the state? It s my opnon f ths lcense fee should become a law, those that dd come to your state another fall would be more unmndful of the law and f such a result should follow t certanly would not be any protecton to the game. Now t s my opnon to change the present laws a trfle to read as I have suggested and f dong so brng the game hog more closely under the law, ncrease the revenue of your state by gvng the sportsmen of lmted means an opportunty to drop hs money wth your peop e, but n chargng a lcense for all nonresdents means you wll stll have the game hog, but wll lose many a true sportsman. Good ads are sometmes got by wrtng down every fact about an artcle that comes to mnd, gvng no heed to form or arrangement, When the persflage s cut away afterward and the remanng facts are grouped logcally, the ad s lkely to be clearer and less labored than f t had been wrtten by one who was afrad of settng down a weak pont. The ad wrter s mnd contans defnte and ndefnte facts about hs goods; when they are put down n ths fashon hs mnd has free play, and when they are all fnally on paper t s easer to edt them and pck out the best, than f they were mere shadows n hs memory. Ths method of wrtng has been used master n wrtng many of the world s peces. Prnter s Ink. T he Ea stern T elephone company s about to open a central oftce n Lewston. It would be a great thng for North Frankln to have some knd of telephone connectons wth the outsde world. It Avould make lttle dfference so far as results to the communty are concerned Avhether the servce should come through the Eastern, the Drgo, or the NeAv England. What North Frankln needs s through connectons and Ma n e W oods wll wreleome the tme when any company can afford to offer to Phllps telephone connectons to a pont more than twenty or thrty mles away. Nature d be al rght f a man could be compelled to work wth hs head as well as wth hs hands.'1 The above quotaton from Charles Bradford s new book The Wldfowlers covers a good deal of ground. There are thousands of men and women who are total falures, or only moderately successful because they are lazy n ther heads. A great many people are called smart, who get over a good deal of earth each day and who, are perhaps, good tvorkers wth ther hands only. The combnaton for real success s a temperament that admts of steady work wth head and hands. E. W. Doavd, an Ottawa real estate dealer s reported to be watng for the tme Avlen Madame Nordca shall Avn her sut from the government for three or four mllons pad by the French government for certan shps belongng to Ichabod Norton, an ancestor. Ar. Dowd says he s an her and s enttled to some of the money. We never heard of Mr. Dowd before and we presume he s a very truthful and relable man, but when that cash s dvded, Frankln county wll come n for a generous share of t whether Dowd can establsh hs clam or not. Congressm an L t t l e e e l d has gone at the trust problem wth hs us ual vgor and has already ntroduced two blls ntended to allay some of the evls resultng from the present stuaton. Of the newspapers that ssued specal Chrstmas numbers, one of the neatest and most credtable was that of the Rumford Falls Tmes. T here have been any number of carefully consdered artcles wrtten by famous lterary men on style and ts psychology. A ll of them agree that t s mostly a matter of the man behnd the pen, a temperamental equaton that tranng but develops and refnes. There s just as much style shown n advertsng wrtng as n the polshed essays of a dfferent sort, but yet equally epressve of the ndvdual and of the busness eploted. In nothng that men do s the value of style better shown or less apprecated than n advertsng. Good and effectve advertsng wrtng must have the qualty of epressng somethng of the character of a busness. And busness character s as tangble a quantty as that of the ndvdual. Creatng an atmosphere of candor wthout the fault of specousness, gvng an mpresson of the justness of clams to superorty, wthout brag and conveyng to readers an mpresson of complete trustworthness, requres somethng better than smart wrtng. Smartness s usually assocated wth shallowness and want of delberaton, and the word-monger or phrase maker s never convncng. More odous n ts frst mpresson s the type arrangement of advertsng matter. The publc may not have a wse dscrmnaton n such thngs, but they are nfluenced by them, nevertheless. There s a suggeston of elegance and refnement n the appearance of a really artstcally composed advertsement that makes ts mpresson wthout any specal nose. Advertsng wrtng seems sordd and commonplace, maybe, and unlterary; but n ts last analyss t nvolves most of the essentals of all good wrtng. Many of us can get out deas f we are allowed unlmted space and there s no restrcton put upon our use of the dctonary. It s a much more dffcult thng to make your meanng clear n a few short sentences of unmstakable character and sgnfcance. Ch a r les J. Zngg, In Prnters Ink of Dec. 18. New Portland Hunters. The eghth annual Sportsmen s show to be held n Madson Square Garden, New Y ok, gves promse of beng ahead of anythng that the management has ever had before. Capt. J. A. II. Dressel, manager, has already shown hmself to be a captal eecutve, and that he can engneer a sportsmen s ehbton that wll please the sportsmen. The show wll open on Wednesday, March 5, at 10 o clock. Among the ehbtons wll be Sportsmen s Camps, Camp Outfts, Gudes, Woodsmen and Trappers, Fly Castng, Revolver Compettons, Ralroads and Hotels from Huntng and Fshng Sectons, Boats, Launches, Canoes and Marno Motors, Game Anmale, Game Brds and Game Fshes, Guns, Rfles, Revolvers, Ammunton, Powder and Shot, Tadermy, Fshng Tackle, Sportsmen s Supples, Golf Goods, Cameras, Tents, Cabns and Portable Houses, Indan Goods, Indan Camps. Everythng that the heart of the lover of woods lfe can wsh wll be there. The detals of the show wll be under the drect control of the Natonal Sportsmen s assocaton as they have found they can thus secure the best results. The plan as they now have t arranged promses to be the most pcturesque of anythng that has been before attempted. One of the most attractve features wll be the Fly Castng contest^ whch wll certanly call to the cty a very large number of fshermen. Ths has already attracted consderable comment, and letters have been receved by the Ma n e W oods commentng very favorably upon ths plan, one suggestng that a Rangeley trout be used n the lake. Other contests that wll arouse a good deal of enthusasm wll be the Revolver and Rfle contests. The gallery wll be occuped by the trade ehbts, whle the other ehbts wll have space on the man floor. The plans are not yet complete, but are beng pushed along as fast as possble. Everyone nterested n outdoor lfe should see that hs lne s fully represented there as thousands of sportsmen wll be present, and a small nvestment here may mean many hundreds of dollars n return. A representaton here s one of the best ways to brng fshng, huntng and outng resorts to the notce of those who want to know of them. Ths year, the management wll deal wth the state of Mane camp and hotel owners drect, furnshng each ndvdual or frm a certan amount of space for ther own personally conducted show so that all who wll make attractve ehbts and conform to certan reasonable requrements wll fnd no dffculty n securng just such spaces as they may want. [Specal correspondence to the M ane W oods.] Strong, Dec. 23, An eperment s beng tred at the toothpck mll ths year. They are tryng to see f yellow brch can be used there as well as whte brch. Last year they used a lttle of t but not enough to prove whether t s of any value or not. Ths year about 300 cords have been bought and a thorough tral s to bo made. So far the results are not satsfactory. The whte brch las a fne round trunk that rounds up well and wth but lttle waste, but the yellow varety usually has twsts and qurks and grows onesded, thereby causng a great amount of loss to the cord. The freshet has worked a large damage to the toothpck mll, estmated at least $1000. A good deal of lumber that they epected n, could not be brought and the work was thus delayed. Ths may be the reason for the rumor that s prevalent that the company has rased ther lst prces for brch and poplar. Ths rumor seems to be well founded, comng as t dd, from some who have ths wood to sell. The tet was Hag., 7, And I wll shake all natons, and the desre of all natons shall come. The shakng of the natons here referred to created great unrest and prepared them to realze need, and to desre help. About the tme that Chrst appeared almost unequaled wckedness prevaled. Canon Farrar speaks of the tme as havng the mark of wckedness upon every department of work, busness and pleasure. One acquanted wth the hstory of Rome, whch was then vrtually the hstory of the world has hut to recall the names of Tberus, Caus, Claudus, Nero, Otho, Vtelhus and Domtan to be assured of the truth of ths. Men longed for some delverer, whom they knew not. The Jews looked defntely for-the comng of the Messah, ; belevng the tme for the fulfllment of j the propheces and promses concernng hm was at hand. I want to show you that the desre of all natons though they knew t not was for Chrst. Some have sought to fnd the hghest good and blessng n the possesson of materal thngs. Babylon and Persa tred ths way fathfully, lvng n luury almost beyond thought and they proved t to be a mserable falure. Can you conceve of natons ruled altogether by the prncples taught and eemplfed by Chrst dong aught to lessen the prosperty of another? that was made. All who have stood by the bedsde of one passng from ths lfe, perchance watchng a loved one, lstenng for the last farewell have wshed to know somethng of the future. The future s known only as we know Chrst. Another attrbute of the human mnd as unversal as the cravng to know s the necessty of worshp. Manknd must worshp somethng. Som-> make a god of ther own selfsh appettes, of thngs that u varous ways seem to add to ther pleasures, some worshp gods estng only n ther magnaton. N o worshp so develops beauty and strength of soul astlat of the Lord Jesus Chrst. Whether then we consder the demands of the body, the ntellect or the affectons, nowhere else do they meet wth such satsfacton as n Chrst who, snce he satsfes the desres of all natons, s the desre of all natons. My frst sermon was preached from the tet; For n hm dwel'eth all the fullness of the Godhead bodly. That s the message that I have tred to put n each sermon snce that frst, Chrst satsfes every need, offers hmself for our need. I brng you ths message wth the plea that you make hm your desre. What Selectmen Have to Contend Wth n West Phllps. Ph llps, Dec. 25, To the Edtor o f Mane Woods: The damage to hghways resultng from the recent freshet s a matter whch drectly nterests every tapayer n Phllps; the manner n whch these repars are made together wth the tme consumed n makng them wll be the subject of about as many opnons as there are tapayers n town. Some of these opnons wll be based upon prejudce, some upon actual knowledge. The former are worth nothng beyond menton; to add to the nformaton of the latter class of people who can not see what s to be done n the west part of the town s the object of a few words here. Frst, one must recall the fact that we are n the mdst of the shortest days of the year; secondly, that help s very scarce; thrd, that the felds and the road sdes are frozen lke adamant. To these one may add the fact that anchor ce forms each nght over the work and ways of the precedng day. The thnkng ctzens of Phllps wll take all these facts nto mnd, and easly arrve at the concluson that the hghways n some places cannot be repared before the comng sprng n a thorough manner. A temporary brdge was put n last week across the stream some ffty rods more or less above the larger brdge; ths for the use of the lumber supply teams and others. Mr. Lockhart furnshed the strngers on the spot, and the town loaned ts plank and sent three men to help. The water s, n part, stll runnng between the brdges above Hodges up. to ths wrtng (the 23rd,) but wll probably be out before nght as the men hope to have the dam above fnshed by that tme. The abutments are n, and the strngers on both these brdges. In bref Mr. Morrson as frst selectman and the road agents and others have done ther best. The snow whch some wsh for s a matter beyond control of any one lvng n town, and we must all wat a lttle longer. C o r. 1 H. T. The men thought he was dead when they reached hm. He was placed under the care of Dr. Smons. It s a remarkable thng that a man so old as Mr.^Hnds s, 70 years, should fall ths dstance, strke on hs head and not break hs neck nstead of the ce. As t was, he broke one of the bones of hs arm, cut a Jlong gash n bs scalp, besdes other mnor njures. All that prevented hs 'breakng hs neck was the gvng way of the ce. To the Edtor of the Mane Woods: Stratton s alve wth busness men. They have bult a large novelty mll under the able management of Mr. Eugene McLan of New Vneyard. The most of the crew s from that town. They wll lve here, thus requrng a number of new houses to be bult n the sprng. They are provng themselves very desrable men to have D any place. The stock of the mll s all owned here. Pure Mount Bgelow sprng water runs nto every house n the place. The three stores furnsh a very advantageous opportunty for shoppng. Publcaton o f Hstory o f Phllps Should Be Helped. Book Would Make Valuable Present to Frends. Ph llp s, Dec. 21, To the Edtor of the Mane Woods: The fact that jou have undertaken to fnsh the Short Hstory of Phllps, begun by Rev. J. E. Clancy, appears to me to be one n whch every past and present resdent of fa t town ought to be n terested. When one takes nto account the self-evdent truth that ths work s a labor of love by all who take part n t that t s n no sense a fnancal venture t seems to me ths nterest ought to be ncreased n a ten-fold manner. I read your statement n regard to the chances for the completon of ths book as gven n your ssue of Nov. 15, wth perhaps more attenton than the ordnary reader, and for ths cause: Knowng a lttle, n tmes past at least, n regard to the epense of such work, I thought that unless you could obtan postve orders for at least 300 copes you could not wth safety your own pocket consdered attempt the publcaton. There are a great many Phllps peo pe far away from old roof trees, and stll a larger number yet among the dwellers of tha old town who are readers of M a n e W oods; unless these good people come to the rescue through the medum of a generous subscrpton to the book, t s evdent that t must fal of publcaton. Pardon me as a resdent of the town for sayng to these people that ths means you! If all, and ths all made up of each, do ther part the wok wll be a success. The gentlemen who have aded Mr. Clancy by the ad of chapters on the dfferent subjects have gven ths ad wthout the least prospect of reward. That Mr. Clancy was forced by reasons, the best, to abandon the enterprse wll be a matter of regret wth many, and yet wth the present able corps of assstants no fears for the ntrnsc value of the book need be entertaned. To subscrbe and pay for even a half dozen copes of the paper edton at 50 cents each, or even for the cloth edton at $ 1.00 per copy, s truly a small matter as compared wth de labor freely done by the dfferent contrbutors. There s a postve gam n ths new arrangement of publcaton; t gves some who have no representaton an opportunty to add some matters of nterest n regard to parents and grandparents of past Phllps days. Truly the work s n the hands of the Phllps reader; prompt and effcent acton on your part saves t for your chldren and grandchldren for the future. Neglect on your part may consgn t to the boundless realm of oblvon. If you are to act at any tme n the matter, Now s the accepted tme. If ths statement n regard to chldren and grandchldren should not n some cases prove true, t s surely true that each has one or more frends to whom a present n the form of a copy of the B a r n u r n s M o n k e y s All well all happy lets of fun. That s the regular report from the monkey cage of Barnum s Crcus ever snce the keepers began dosng the monkeys wth Scott s Emulson. Consumpton was carryng off two thrds of them every year and the crcus had to buy new ones. One day a keeper accdentally broke a bottle of Scott s Emulson near the monkey cage and the monkeys eagerly lapped t up from the floor. Ths suggested the dea that t mght do them good. Snce then the monkeys have receved regular doses and the keepers report very few deaths from consumpton. Of course fs cheaper to buy Scott s Emulson than new monkeys and that suts the crcus men. Consumpton n monkeys and n man s the same dsease. If you have t or are threatened wth t can you take the hnt? Frankln County Men Now Lvng In Massaeusetts. Leom nster, M a ss., Dec. 12, To the Edtor of the Mane IFoods: There are two men n Leomnster, who were born and bred n Frankln county, Mane. One of them s Mr. Rufus K. Lander. He was born n the town of Kngfeld, s a brother to Harrs Lander, who stll resdes n hs natve town. But Rufus, whle a young unmarred man, came to Salem, where he was unted n marrage wth Mss Abbe Brun and establshed a home and lved there fourteen years. Then he came to Leomnster and has been here 18 years on a farm whch he purchased when he frst came here, about one mle from Leomnster Center. He has met wth good success n hs farmng operatons and makes farmng pay. He keeps four good cows and he and hs wfe manufacture butter for market havng regular customers for that product who pay them 30 cents a pound for t the year round. Mr. Lander feeds the skm mlk to pgs and fnds they pay hm well for the labor of feedng and marketng them. He also keeps qute a large number of hens. A t the present tme he has 250 but wll dspose of 100 soon and wll wnter only 150. He also rases qute a large amount of dfferent knds of frut, apples, pears, pea' les, qunce, plums, cherres and grapes, whch usually fnd a good market here. At the present tme Mr. Lander s gettng 8 cents a dozen for hs eggs as eggs are scarce here just now. They have only one chld, a son. The other Frankln county Mane man whom I referred to s Mr. Clarence E. Blackwell. He was born n the town of Jay but spent the most of hs boyhood days n the town of Salem. He has been here n Leomnster 12 years and has worked n one of the horn shops whch are numerous here. They manufacture combs of all knds, also harpns and buttons out ot cattle horns. Mr. Blackwell has learned all parts of that busness and has been runnng a part of the shop by the job durng the last two years, and employs from four to fve men. n e has tnus far met wth good success. He also owns nearly an acre of land on whch he rases qute an amount of garden truck for the market, besdes supplyng hs own household wth all such luures fresh from the garden. He rases a consderable amount of frut. He also keeps from $0 to 0 hens whch pay hm well for hs ^rouble. He has bult hm a nce two-story dwellng house durng the past season and has just moved nto t. Ths house cost hm some over two thousand dollas. Before comng here he marred Mss Almeda Tozer who was born n the town of Anson. They have three chldren, two grls and one boy. Ths s Interestng. Agrcultural Edtor: Two years ago n a lecture before the chemstry class at the Medcal unversty where I was a student, the professor, whle analyzng an egg stated that the reason hens dd not lay as many eggs n wnter as n summer, was that n wnter they could not get the necessary food to produce the yolk of eggs, and f farmers would feed ther fowls powdered Red Albumen n wnter they could have as many eggs as n summer. I was nterested n the subject, as my father and brother are farmers, so after the lecture I asked the professor n what quanttes the albumen should be fed. He sad to take one pound of powdered red albumen and m t wth one pound of black or red pepper, ground fne. Then every mornng m some ground feed, half wheat bran and half corn meal, and to each quart of ths med feed add two teaspoonsful of the med pepper and albumen, then add enough hot water to dampen the feed not to make t stcky. Gve a quart of ths hot feed to each 12 hens every mornng and a quart of whole gran, wheat or corn, or both med, to each 12 fowls every evenng, and n two weeks your hens wll begn to lay and wll lay all wnter, f you feed them ths feed. The professor sad he had kept a pen of game fowls for 15 years and always fed them ths feed and always had an abundance of eggs. I wrote to my father and brothers, gvng them ths recpe, and they and several neghbors tred t last wnter wth complete success, the coldest weather dd not stop ther hens layng. My father keeps about 100 lght Brahmas. Wnter before last they dd not lay at all, but on ths feed last wnter, they averaged about 7 dozen eggs a day all wnter. One thng the Brahmas used to do to a fnsh, that was set, but last sprng father could not get a hen to set untl le qut feedng ths feed. My brother bought 250 young hens last September and I got a letter from hm today sayng that he began gvng ths feed two weeks ago and s now gettng over 200 eggs a day. I have a great many frends back home that read your paper and thought I would have you prnt ths recpe so that they and all your readers that keep poultry could bo benefted by ts use, for hens may as well be layng all wnter as to be dle, but a hen s smply a machne, and f you do not supply the materal, the hen cannot lay the eggs. You can get a pound of pepper at any grocery for 30 cents and a pound of albumen at any drug store for 60 cents and a pound each of pepper and albumen wll feed 50 hens over a month, and you wll get 100 dozen eggs that you would not get wthout t, and 100 dozen eggs n wnter, are worth at least $20.00 and $20.00 for 90 cents worth of feed s surely a bg proft.
