Accordng to Andrew Roth, drector of admssons, "ercyhurst College now has a 'compettve' ratng as opposed to the, 'less 9 compettve ratng t held for sx 9 or seven years. * Roth explans how he thnks ths mprovement came about, " e r c y h u r s t wasn't as (academcally) selectve, especally n the late '70's. That has changed n the past three or four years wth mprovements such as Val-Sal Scholarshps, the Egan Scholars program, and more sophstcated! ntense recrutng." \ ; To earn a "compettve" ratng, the 'Hurst had to meet certan academc standards. t needed an average SAT score of 900; here the mean SAT s 902. Average class rank needed to be wthn the top 50 percentle; here t s wthn the top 30 percentle. The average ACT score needs to be 8; here the mean ACT score s 2. ercyhurst wll not accept a student wth a hgh school G.P.A. of less than 2.0. Last year ercyhurst College rejected 8 percent of therj applcants. Roth plans to hold that number around 5 percent. Roth ctes that the ratng s based on the "dffculty n gettng admtted nto that partcular college." The Admssons Offce plans to take advantage of the hgher ratng for recrutng purposes. "Ths wll be a real help to us," contnued Roth, "n the past we've lost some good students." Roth hopes that n the next fve years the college wll eventually earn a "very compettve" ratng. '» W Extended Lab Hoursj Proposed By Government The ercyhurst Student Government convened for the frst tme snce February 26 wth Kathy O'Connor fllng the shoes of departed Dave Robnson. O'Connor wll assume the responsbltes of presdent of SG untl recently elected Pat Songer offcally takes offce. 3 The Fat an Box Put e On The Fve Year Plan By ke Schellhammer OK, t's :30 n the mornng. 've got to get up at sx and go down to Gannon to work out. t's already the thrd week of a ten week term and haven't even cracked one of my seven books for ths term. "an, should really get some sleep." thnk to myself. So. get up to swtch off TV on my new 9 nch color televson set, (whch does not cut off two nches from both sdes of the pcture). But wat - here comes Huey Lews and The News sngng "Heart and Soul!" Snce 've only seen ths vdeo,293 tmes ths month, wat to watch t. After all, how much dfference could four mnutes make? Well, after Huey and the boys were done, The J. Gels Band came on, and then Rod Stewart, and then... well, next thng know t's 2:4 and my chances of gettng up at sx are about the same as my odds at gettng a 4.0 n norganc Chemstry. Ths brngs me to the pont of ths artcle: Cable TV n your apartment can destroy your grade pont average. There was never any queston about cable n my apartment - we had to have t. We also had to have HBO, Showtme, TV wth a stereo hookup, and the most destructve artcle n the house - a channel control box wth a cord that reached all the way to the couch. We dubbed that vle thng "The Fat an Box" because you get fat lyng on the couch changng channels at your lesure. Well, the fat man box and took to each other lke beer and pretzels. Soon, was addcted to cable TV. parked on the couch for hours at a tme wth that box. dd homework wth t. typed papers wth one hand on the box and one on the typewrter. ATTENTON GRADUATNG SENORS Splash: Take The Plunge 5 By Laura Ruby ermad: (ur'mad). an magnary sea creature wth the head and upper body of beautful woman and tal of a fsh. Ths defnton of ermad comes from Webster's New World Dctonary. Although ths s a standard and proper defnton, n some cases t doesn't apply. For nstance, n the Buena Vsta, Walt Dsney Producton SPLASH, the word 'magnary' would have to be scratched from the defnton. SPLASH stars Tom Hanks, Daryt Hannah, and John Candy. The flm was drected by Ron Howard, The story begns when. eght [year old Alan Bauer (Tom Hanks) takes a vacaton wth hs famly. Whle on a boat rde and terrbly restless, Alan falls overboard. Wth a kss she saved hs lfe. Some 20 years later she reappears... n search of Alan Bauer. For a "Fary-tale"*: flm, SPLASH was qute amusng and entertanng. The mxture of humor and serousness fulflled the fctonal plot. n my opnon, Tom Hanks was the energy n the flm.*however, Daryl Hannah dd a truly excellent job portrayng the character and nner emotons of a ermad. n a magcal way, she brought ths fctonal sea creature to lfe on the Slver Screen. 4 Who Dd You Vote For? \ By Chrs Dorazo ercyhurst Student Governmen! electons for ths year have come and gone, and the wnners are beng announced. The most asked queston may be, "Who dd you vote for?" But has anyone asked "How dd you decde who you were gong to vote for?" Snce the frst day of classes ths term, ercyhurst students have been the targets of each canddates ndvdual campagnng. Posters, vsts to the dorms by canddates, and speeches. But how much effect does campagnng really have when t comes tme :o choose who to vote for? The general consensus around campus was summed! best by senor Carol Thompson who commented, " thnk everyone knew rght away at least one person they were gong to vote for as soon as the canddates were announced. Those anyone weren't sure about must have reled on»campagnng." She added, ''Well, ether campagnng or word of mouth." Another factor that seemed to play a part n the decson makng was the canddate's already establshed reputaton on campus. Let's face t, ercyhurst s a small campus, where everyone knows or at least has heard of everyone else. And everyone has some sort of reputaton. One sophomore commented that they had ntended on votng for a partcular canddate untl one of ther frends sad that they had heard a certan pece of nformaton about ths person. The same sophomore admtted that he was not sure f ths nformaton was true, but t dd have an effect on who thev voted for. One last factor that had an effect on the outcome of the electons was the open forum that was held n Baldwn Hall the Sunday before electons. The general atttude about the forum by people who attended t was that t dd nflue nee them to some degree or who they cast ther votes for. Senor Chrs Carosa commentec that t showed everyone there hovs the canddates could handle themselves. "There were some nterestng questons asked at the forum, and t was nterestng tc see how the canddates presentee themselves to the questons,'' Carosa added. So t would appear that-campagnng does nfluence the voter* at ercyhurst. But future canddates should be aware that t \ not the only factor t hat goes ntc the student's decson makng Reputaton, word of mouth, anc the general atttude of the canddate all play a part n the voter'$ fnal decson. 8 Women's Crew Sweeps Past WVU; Frst Home eet Ths Saturday by Stephane Hultberg The men and women Crew teams travelled to West Vrgna Unversty (organtown, WV) last weekend to brng back fve wns out of seven races. The Women's team, under Head Coach Jack Beck, swept WVU n three races. The 'Hurst women posted wns n the Novce eght, Varsty eght, and Varsty four events. The Varsty four proved to be the bggest surprse, when they rowed aganst supposedly West Vrgna's best women's boat and beat them by 20 seconds," stated Coach Beck. All the women dd an outstandng job and attrbute that to all ther work on the rowng tanks... the result wouldn't Yoke's over have been as postve.wthout them," Beck added. The?Novce eght won by 2 seconds, the Varsty eght fnshed 5 seconds ahead, and the JV eght beat WVU by seven seconds n ther race. The en's teams coached by Al Beovarac and Joe Lennon earned two wns by the Novce four and eght boats, whle they dropped the two varsty clashes. "We had a lot gong aganst us wth frst tme on the water n two weeks (snce the sprng Florda t r p ), " commented-coach Beovarac. The Varsty eght had the bggest challenge ercyhurst entered the lghtweght boat (average man s 5' 0", 53 lbs.) a g a n s t West V r g n a ' s Every Sprng the same problem occurs concernng the athletc department. Where do we play? Ths queston s asked by the Women's Softball team and the partcpants of the ntramural softball program. As usual, 984 wll not be an excepton to the rule. Once agan, Janet Prce and Dave Cherco must go on wtch (or whch, dependng on how you look at t) hunt to fnd a feld that s avalable. Ths year the problem has been solved, agan temporarly. The Women's Softball team, under the drecton of Coach Jm artn, wll play ther HOE games on felds away from campus. The team wll utlze Asbury Feld and Lnden Feld, both of whch are located West of Pennnsula Drve. (Drectons came be found n a related story). Ths makes the team play for the second season n a 'row wthout a home feld advantage; pretty sad for a Dvson Collegate program. As for ntramurals, the guesses as to where we're/playng have been narrowed to a choce or two. For any of you senors or junors who remember the great f season n the Sprng of 982, heavyweghts (average man s 6'", 75 lbs.). "They clung onto West Vrgna, but just couldn't hold on. They only lost by sx seconds-due to the tough competton and lack of water tme," Beovarac stated. Both the men and women have the real test of ther tranng efforts ths Saturday n a dual meet wth thaca College and aretta at 0 a.m. "They are two of the strongest colleges n the naton. They are also consstent fnshers at natonals," agreed Beck and Beovarac. However all three coaches ^reman postve that the 'Hurst? wll - make a very good showng aganst^ these two bg rvals. don't plan on usng the ultpurpose feld. Cherco, who s drector of the ntramural program, says that the outfeld porton of the baseball feld wll be the ste of competton once agan. At least t's on campus. The queston whch many peo pe contnue to ask me s; What s wrong- wth our ult-purpose feld? h Well, frst thngs frst. We should rename the feld. How about "The ercyhurst Soccer F e l d? " t w o u l d n ' t be msleadng. >< After dscussng the stuaton wth Coach Deeo, the reason the feld s undergong mnmal use s no fault of anyone. Unless of course, you know someone who controls the Ere weather. Deeo explans that the prmary purpose of the feld s to serve the soccer program. Not only the college team, but also ercyhurst Prep. Soccer s a sport whch beats up a feld on a dry day, let alone a rany day. ;,.. To use the feld n the sprng for softball, ntramurals or collegate, wears the ercyhurst faclty greatly. Ths, Deeo explaned, s due to the poor dranng. No matter how carefully the feld was used, once the ran hts, t takes almost three full days for the feld to dran properly. Ths would make ntramurals and women's softball mpractcal. very So, we stll need a soluton. Deeo came up wth a few dandes. For ntramurlas: how about the feld whch s located n the front to St. arks? Sure, t sn t perfect; but as a player myself, don't need a perfect feld, just one to play on. We are also realzed that the last *, home baseball game.'was scheduled for ay 3. Therefore, we could even use the actual baseball damond wth a few modfcatons. But, these deas don't help the women's team. Ultmately, the answer s a new feld to house softball. Supposedly plans have already been made to do ths. However, we needed felds last year and nothng was done; but the-acquston of St. arks should allevate the major problems. Every other sports edtor n the country s dong t, so mght as well jon the ranks. Lsted below are my baseball pcks for the 984 season. Please, have mercy. f 'm wrong when playoff tme s here, let me forget who pcked. But, f 'n\ rght, you can be sure 'll remnd you.
