Ths was one of the frst Amercan companes under the drecton of a black artst Curre photographer explans problems By MARTHA BUCKNER Followng numerous student complants about school pctures beng receved late or not at all, Doug Curre of Curre Photography sad all prnts have already been maled or soon would be. Students who haven't yet receved ther pctures should contact Curre Photography wth the number from ther recept card, receved at the tme of the sttng, and the prnts wll be forwarded. In a letter to students released fall quarter, Curre sad that the proofs and pctures would be ready wthn four to sx weeks. The Reflector staff has receved complants from students who have receved nether ther fnshed prnts or ther proofs, despte the fact that pctures were taken months ago. "We thought f he (Curre) sgned a contract, thngs would be okay," sad Terr Webb, 1979 Reflector edtor. The proofs for the yearbook have been delvered, but Webb sad,"we have no control over what he does wth students." Last year the Reflector staff had problems wth Curre concernng deadlnes for recevng prnts for the yearbook, wheras ths year t seems to be the student customers who are havng problems. Curre sad he thought he had the facltes for all processng but,"we were just swamped. We were prepared to process the pctures as they were taken, but durng the frst few days of the sttngs only 30 people showed up and we had to handle hundreds the last couple of days." Webb sad the Reflector "defntely would not use Doug Curre agan next year." Webb sad the staff hestated usng a frm from outsde ths area, but t s currently consderng usng a company n Illnos (Sudlow, Inc.) or an Atlanta company. Should Sudlow get the contract, appontments for sttngs wll be made and a prnt to the Reflector wll be sent free. A Bachelor's degree n arts and scences was chosen for the nursng program because "all supportng courses, both n terms of core currculum and courses auxlary to those n nursng per se, are offered by the school of arts and scences," sad Jones. The recently approved to establsh a base 0f program wll be offered to recognton for somethng sophomores after completon other than exclusvely ethnc of certan admsson See ROD, p. 7 requrements. "Prospectve nursng students applyng to Georga Southern for ther freshman year wll meet the general admsson requrements to the college; a separate applcaton to the nursng program must be made pror to the begnnng of the sophomore year," sad Jones. The department wll be staffed by a department head and one or two nstructors for the fall quarter "We have been natonally advertsng for a department head and are now begnnng to receve applcatons," stated Jones. Addtonal nformaton concernng the program and student advsement s avalable through the head of the department of nursng. Savannah rabb sets lectures Two' lectures wll be presented by Rabb Saul J. Lews Grzzard reported that the Unversty of Georga student body presdent ran wth a bag over hs head and ncluded ths as a part of the changes gong through ths generaton of students at Athens. Maybe we should gve the voters a smlar opportunty here. Students government costs a lot of money. Each of the fve offcers are pad from $275- $325 each quarter. Paper and other supples cost more. What for? Student representaton. Whle members of the CCC get pad bg bucks, College Judcal Board and AFBC members get pad nothng for ther long hours of duty. Could anythng fll the vod jye dd not have a CCC? The students could elect a student commttee on commttees that would not get pad. The hours would be no more than the Judcal Board or AFBC students put n so the salares could be removed and put to somethng constructve. Ths same group could handle the organzatonal fundng n a bref monthly meetng. Of course, many students may feel the CCC s a good form of student government. Perhaps most students feel that way. Ths year's CCC has done as good a job, f not better, than any recent CCC. But t would be healthy to offer the voters a choce. Fve canddates could sgn up for the avalable offces and run on the aboltonst tcket. If done well, ther campagn would let all students know exactly what they are tryng to do. Then on electon day each of the fve should have exactly the same number of votes. Then these fve, probably Cone Hall resdents, would take offce, reorganze the CCC, and not accept any money for ther work. If they tred to collect money, they could be mmedately recalled. If the students elected to change the system through the electon, the CCC supporters would fnd that they have been wrong. If the students chose to support the CCC as t stands, then the CCC detractors would have ther answer. One thng s defnte. The electon would be the most nterestng student electon yet. Even more nterestng than that recent electon for the youknow-what. The Dran And The Ran Standng on the lbrary steps one can see what used to be a lovely sght, but s now a muddy mess. The lakes, whch are more lke a shallow bog, have evoked complants from students and faculty alke. Why dran the water and create such a mess? What s takng so long to restore these areas? Why was ths project taken on now? These questons, asked by people rghtfully concerned about the school and the lakes, have answers good answers. Accordng to Wllam Cook, vce presdent of busness and fnance, the lakes had become very shallow because of ncreasng deposts of topsol and sand, especally n the collectng pond. Also the fsh had become completely out of balance wth large numbers of small fsh and few large ones. One other problem, because of the trash n the water, both natural and man-made, the oxygen content was low, and the fsh would have soon begun to de f somethng had not been done. Cook sad the water was draned so that the lakes could be deepened and restocked. In answer to the queston "Why now?," we can only say "Why not now?" Durng the summer months statstcs show that the ranfall n ths area averages about 6.5 nches, whle durng the perod of October to January has less than half of that, or about 2.8 nches, accordng to the New World Almanac. Judgng from the statstcs, t seems that wnter quarter was the best tme for the project. However, ranfall went up ths wnter, much to the dsappontment of plant operatons as the lakes must be completely dry before equpment can be brought n to deepen them. As soon as possble, the lakes wll be completely renovated, creatng once agan a beautful area and a fne fshng spot. Let us be a lttle patent, just ths once, wth GSC authortes and wth nature. Edde Donato # Gon' down that 'uptown* rver A good frend of mne named Norbert, who s a resdent of Tybee Island and owns a couple of boats, has ntroduced me to the boatng world over the past few years. Norbert s not a pretentous status seeker but he does take consderable prde n hs aquatc machnes. To the people who lve by navgable bodes of water, ownng a sturdy boat s just as much an aspect of the good lfe as the non-ol-burnng, no-chp-fnsh auto s to the land locked motorst. Boat owners exceed n glowng admraton over ther hulls that allow them to expand earthly travels beyond nterstate concrete, county mantaned blacktop, or back country unlned drt roads. And that prde s not dmnshed by the power source of ther boats whether t be a motor, sals, or a couple of oars. Norbert's boats are not last year's models and the fberglass structures don't exactly gleem n the flud reflectons of calm water. But boatng wth hm has taught me that the captan of the shp sn't concerned wth the shortfalls of the craft but wth ts vrtues. The frst tme I went boatng wth Norbert was qute a whle ago. At that tme he owned a small flatbottom boat wth a 1947 motor. I was rdng down to the beach when I saw hm, along wth Bonne and Maynard, crusng along a rver that runs parallel to the hghway. I stopped the car, got out, and was standng on the front crash bumper takng pctures of them when they saw me and came over. Before long I had the car locked up and clmbed nto the boat whch preceeded to snk lower n the water. Only a couple of nches of the boat was showng above the water lne. Norbert revved the motor up to maxmun speed and soon we were rdng along wth a rather unmpressve wake behnd us; nothng lke the rooster tal the Budweser boat makes on those televson commercals. But forward progress was steady and Norbert, wth a large smle, assured everyone on the relablty of the motor. (I once wtnessed hm convnce a couple of people, who obvously had never been to the beach before, to carry off a pece of drftwood of questonable aesthetc value.) We crused along for a whle before dscoverng that we were lost. A four-part argument developed that lasted rght up untl the shear pn on the propellor broke and we all began to take turns rowng as the sun went down. I began to thnk of all the thngs we should have wth us n the boat for an overnght stay n the marsh: tents, food, and flashlghts. But Norbert remaned exultant throughout the ordeal and eventually we rowed our way to a decrept dock wth matchng house and yard. A couple of weeks ago Norbert took me for a rde n hs new boat, the one he calls "the Cadllac". Ths boat, a 1963 wth a 1962 mttor s consderable larger than the flatbottom and s equpped wth a steerng wheel, a couple of short square-back bucket seats out of an early 60's Chevrolet, and a speedometer that doesr work. Norbert has put a lot; work nto that boat. Ls^r summer he fberglassed s? secton of ts bottom tfcv\ needed mendng and adde^a wndsheld that I las^f cracked whle enterng tg t boat from the front. He a' c panted small sectons of t ojj faded aquamarne fn r wth some outstand^ mdnght blue. Norbert, Bonne, and I g,t underway on the Back Rh after playng mus^l batteres wth a couple nt's!, and the boat. There was alsc a trp back to the house fo the anchor n hs 1959 pckuf truck wth the mystery locaton frst gear before wc could leave. We hadn't gone a coug.a^ mles before Norbert was explanng and demonstratng how fast the boat would go f t became necessary to use the small, but new, auxlary motor that was attached to the back alongsde the bgger powerplant. Everythng was gong to be all rght. No rowng. So we settled back, assured that "the Cadllac of the waterway" could handle any stuaton. In a few moments Norbert was poppng open a can of beer. He wasn't drnkng your everyday blue collar Pabstor mddle class Schltz, but Tuborg Gold. He took a long draw c».»«o»~ can and placed t n the plastc stck-on-the-dashboard cup holder. Sttng back n the seat, wth one hand on the steerng whe;l, and arm on the sde of te boat, and a mschevous smle, he turned to nm r<pt,,., sad, "Isn't ths uptown'! E3B QOC1Q 8BOT 9 < l.k <*3k-

Followng a last lap wreck nvolvng the race leaders, Petty won the Daytona 500, hs frst vctory after 45 straght losses. It seemed lke an eternty snce number 43 drove nto that same Daytona vctory lane a yearand-a-half ago. Ths wn came n a very exctng race, however. Stock car racng s a very exctng sport, f not the most exctng sport of all. It's somethng lke beng a Bulldog fan only a hundred tmes better. Ths year's Daytona 500 was lke ths year's Tech-Georga football game, the greatest event n an always exctng seres. Almost 20 cars were stll on the lead lap at the halfway pont. Three leaders spun off the track n the early stages and yet two of those came back to create the exctement on the last lap. " Homecomng 1979 was a "total dsgrace"! I've been at ths school snce Fall '77 and what happened was absolutely the most "dsgustng ncdent" that could possbly happen at ths gem of schools, ths shnng star among the nsttutons of hgher learnng n ths great state of ours. Cale ether lost control or forced hs car nto Allson's and both automobles were badly wrecked. Petty then held off Darrell Waltrp and A. J. Foyt for hs sxth Daytona 500 wn. Rchard Petty s a hero. He has fans all over the world. He s a leader n hs sport's record books. He doesn't smoke cgarettes, despte the heavy NASCAR sponsorshp by Reynolds Tobacco Company. He has never endorsed any alcoholc beverages. He turned down a Playboy ntervew. He has a wfe (the only one he's ever had) and four chldren. He lves n the same small North Carolna communty that he has always lved n and hs famly has always lved n. He smles a lot. Hs busness manager s the chaplan of stock car racng and Petty wears a "Wth God You're Always a Wnner" patch on hs drver's sut. He has never been a free agent. And he s determned. Durng the losng streak LETTERS Of course, I'm talkng about the "abhorrently juvenle behavor" dsplayed by an "adult" n ths tradton laden event of Homecomng. Actually, the fact that an ndvdual would choose to possbly expose fne young women, a college presdent, and hmself to hgh-ptched boong, frenzed ce throwng, senseless name callng, and even egg ptchng all of whch were uncalled for s not at all surprsng consderng many "gnorant fools" are so openly allowed to nfltrate the hallowed halls of educaton everywhere. The surprsng aspect of the stuaton s that the actons of one "nane ndvdual" would be allowed to mar the reputaton and detract honor from ths fne college. Often players are uncontrollable durng games one has been expelled from the league for httng an opposng player whle that player was beng held n an attempt to avod a fght. Another player s under suspenson now for physcally threatenng a female scorekeeper durng a game. It's gotten so bad most of the students who referee refuse to call ther games. Rather than stand up to ths team, the ntramural department has had to brng n a black offcal from outsde the school to keep order n ther games. It's true that there are no black refs, but whose fault s that? The fact s that ths team s unable to compete under the same condtons the rest of the teams play under.
