2 2-S1DELNES, Oct. 7, 1975 Ctzens Central refusng most loans to students by Rck Edmondson Protestng that he was beng "categorzed," an MTSU sophomore told Sdelnes he was refused a loan from Ctzens Central Bank smply because he s a student. Jm Spes, a sophomore from San Antono, Tex. who has had an account wth Ctzens Central Bank for a year, sad that bank refused hm a loan because of a new polcy whch prohbts loans to students. "We qut makng loans to students because t hasn't been very proftable," Edna Redmon, assstant vce presdent, sad Thursday. "Our losses have been heavy," she added. Redmon sad there are "very few exceptons" to ths polcy, but that one excepton would apply f the student applyng for the loan were employed on a full-tme bass, lved n the Murfreesboro area and were able to get a "parental endorsement." She added that one other requrement would be that the student's parents also lve n Murfreesboro Redmon was asked f she dd not consder ths practce dscrmnaton. "Rght now we've got about $2, we're fxng to charge off," Moser sad. Spes, who holds two part-tme jobs and s treasurer of ATO fraternty, sad he has always had a good credt record, and that after beng refused a $4 loan at Ctzens Central, he then went to Murfreesboro Bank and Trust where he was granted a 'oan "on the spot" after offcals at that bank made one phone call to check hs credt. "'ve always had a perfect cre- Justn Durango Acme WESTERN CLOTHNG Rockmont. Ctzens Central Bank, whch once advertsed as the only bank n town that waved servce charges on MTSl' students' accounts, apparently now s the only bank n town that refuses loans to students on the bass of ther beng students. A call to the other three banks n town, Murfreesboro Bank and Trust, Commerce Unon Bank of Rutherford County and Natonal Bank of Murfreesboro, revealed that they all make loans to students once the proper checks have been made. Redmon sad Ctzens Central has also dscontnued the polcy of wavng servce charges to students. "We have to be careful," she sad. "We're lendng out other people's money." "Thngs lke ths shouldn't happen; they shouldn't categorze students lke that." Spes concluded. 4 4-SDDJNES, Oct. 7,1975 Opnon Sdelnes October 7, 1975 letters' Dorm mother says students to blame for problems The dorm resdent who wrtes how horrble t s lvng n the dorm should take another look at her complants. Mce and bugs are often n dorms because of grls who refuse to empty ther trash untl the smell forces them to take acton. Bugs are everywhere because of grls who leave drty dshes n the snks n the restrooms for bugs to revel n. She complans of the water suddenly turnng cold n the showers as f the admnstraton was controllng the water ppes. Even many homes have ths problem and t sn't, contrary to her belef, the plot of the housng offce. And the heat why does she thnk the ar doesn't work a lot of the tme? Because grls neglect to read nstructons Dean McLean hands out at the begnnng of each semester to every dorm resdent. These drectons specfcally state: 1) Keep the wndows closed; 2) Leave the thermostat set at the desred temperature, and 3) Do not hang heavy objects on ppes. But grls persst n leavng wndows open, forcng the ar systems to work "overtme," and more often than not n ths overloaded condton, the ar system can burn out. And then there are those grls who flp the ar and thermostat dals back and forth untl the systems can't adjust. And then there are those who hang heavy objects on the ppes (whch are not made of metal), causng the ppes to bend, constrctng the ar flow. These are the same grls who complan, "the ar never works rght." 've found that those who take care of the ar systems n ther rooms have few complants. Then she complans about the banshees who shrek up and down the halls and blames ths on the RA's. What s wrong wth her that she can't ask people to be quet? RA's are n dorms to help the grls and to keep thngs runnng as smoothly as possble, but that doesn't mean they are responsble for everythng! They can't be SW- QO Vou THNK You couu? Tt blamed for nose when grls wll not take any acton themselves, but nstead wat for "mommy" to do t all. have no sympathy for anyone who wll let these banshees run ther sleep and study and then not do anythng to correct t except complan. Yes, she's rght about one thng. Dorms can't provde all the comforts and consderatons of home, but for most they come pretty close. f her lvng quarters are mserable, nne tmes out of ten, t's not admnstratve error, t s hers. She remnds me of grls who neglect to tell ther head resdents that ther snk s leakng untl water s all over the floor and mldew has formed and them complan about how run down thngs Open vstaton bll ''too vague'' for passage am wrtng ths letter n response to your edtoral of Oct. 3 and n defense of my vote on the "Socal Preference Guarantee" Bll, whch voted aganst. Frst of all, my congratulatons for fnally quotng someone correctly. Second, would lke to reterate that do thnk the bll was too vague. Though may be showng myself to be a true "ntellectual lghtweght," t seemed to me that the bll meant exactly what t sad. That beng, f passed, all vstaton restrctons, ncludng the checkng n and out of guests, would be done away wth startng n the Fall of hardly thnk that the women of the dorms want men freely walkng n and out of ther dormtores at all hours whle they must use the same halls to go to the showers and rest rooms. would be, and always have been n favor of a bll that would ease vstaton restrctons,.e. removng all vstaton tmes and days for J and K apartments and expanson of the number of days n the week for open house n types "B" and "C" housng, and as a member of the Student Rghts Commttee, plan to push for the passage of ths type of bll. n closng, would lke to say that the Senate really would have been shttwn as a bunch of "ntellectual lghtweghts" f we had sent a bll as vague as the "Socal Preference Guarantee" Bll for ether Dr. (Vce-Presdent for Student Affars Robert) LaLance's or the Board of Regents' approval. Ths s not meant to be, nor should t be consdered as, a slander toward the senators that voted for the bll. Butch Burns Box 1747 are. And she remnds me of grls who run ther har dryers, stereos, TV's, electrc rollers, electrc typewrters, clocks, make-up mrrors and lamps all at the same tme n the same room and then complan when fuses blow. These problems aren't due to admnstratve ncompetence; they aren't due to admnstratve "rp-offs" as she states. These problems are due to grls who refuse to take care of the dorms and refuse to act on problems when they can do t themselves. Granted, the admnstraton s sometmes n error, but n my experence as a head resdent, 've gotten nothng but sncere effort and concern from housng offcals. They do all they possbly can to make the dorms lveable, and are not concerned at all wth "rppng-off" resdents. The Housng offce makes no proft whatsoever on dorms, so where s the rp-off? f ths dorm resdent doesn't lke the dorm, she should move out. For $197.5 a semester, she's gettng a pretty good deal, and won't fnd a better deal anywhere. Merry Lynn Starlng Head Resdent Lyon Hall Box 5935 RA's wll ad f help sought Ths s a response to the letter prnted last Frday about dorm resdents and ther troubles. Frst, f someone s makng a lot of nose, why can't someone go tell the RA? As an RA, can't possbly hear everythng, but f 'm told of t, wll take acton. don't know what dorm was beng talked about, but don't thnk t was Gore. can't be at the dorm all the tme, but when 'm at the dorm wll try to satsfy everybody f 'm told of ther troubles. The RA's can only take care of problems we see and hear ourselves unless we are told of someone dsturbng other resdents. Wade H. Duggn Gore Hall

5 letters- SDELLNES, Oct. 7, ASB Speaker asks 'workable, reasonable' aeton For once, let's put some facts not opnon about the ASB Senate nto the news(?)paper. Frst wll respond to the "Socal Preference Guarantee" Bll that was defeated by the Senate. As stated n Frday's edtoral, "even f every bll the Senate passes s vetoed, the Senate should reflect the mood of the students." f every bll the Senate passes s vetoed, there would be lttle use n havng a Senate. The Senate s a body whch wants to affect change for, not n spte of, the student body. Concernng vstaton, the House of Representatves and Senate have a jont Student Rghts Commttee. Ths commttee wll nvestgate the Rescue and Campus Lvng, wll announce ts Bug problems real n H dorm just recently moved to H Dorm and became aware of the problem of bugs. woke up one mornng and thought was seeng thngs when saw two bugs chasng each other across the floor. 4 Student defends revewer's opnons Although some mght thnk t s tme to bury the hatchet and move on to better thngs, would lke to take ssue wth the abuse and harrassment C rouse Powell has receved from the publc n general, but from WKDA n partcular. by no means or stretch of the magnaton agree wth what Powell sad about Southern rock. But f he thnks he has a vald opnon (and he most obvously does) then t s hs rght to express t. Why must everyone panc n terror just because they are so narrow-mnded to not even frst consder the valdty of hs pont? Why must KDA lead a crusade as f Chrst hmself had been attacked? Or, more to the pont, why must ndvdual opnon be subjected to such extreme publc bombardment? Can't we move on to more mportant ssues and dssolve ths bckerng? Mark Froehlch Not untl klled one of them dd realze that wasn't seeng thngs. To further dmnsh my doubts, have snce klled three bugs n one drawer, one on the closet shelf and a few on the floor, and 've only been here three days. don't know what knd of bugs these are as 've never seen them before, but thnk somethng should be done about t, and know of no one to go to except Sdelnes. Fles can put up wth, but not bugs that crawl around n drawers, closet shelves and on the floor. Maybe someone who can do somethng about ths wll see ths letter and do somethng about t, lke extermnaton. 'm sure my room s not the only one n H wth ths problem. Mke Kategan Box 4696 meetng tmes so the students can have nput on ther regulatons, and wll wrte legslaton to recommend explct changes. After dong research, the ASB Congress wll be able to recommend somethng whch has substanance and somethng the men and women want. Let me emphasze that the ASB House, Senate, Executve Branch and Judcal Branch operate for your beneft. We are a lmted number of people wth, beleve - t-or-not, other responsbltes also. f each of us spent 24 hours a day researchng and workng for you, we certanly could accomplsh much more. Snce that sn't exactly possble, let me present you wth ths dea. Let's form commttees wth one Senator and one representatve as charman. ask you the students, to not just complan, but to offer some of your tme to do the nvestgatve work so that workable, reasonable solutons and proposals can be made to the approprate people. Workable, reasonable proposals wll be taken drectly to the Board of Regents f necessary, and f you wll gve ASB some support! do want to thank the Senators for the hours they have devoted to ther jobs, and want to thank all of the people who helped wth bcycle regstraton last Tuesday and Wednesday. As have stated often, ASB offces are on the thrd floor of the Unversty Center and are open for you. We solct you to be a responsble student body. Jane Carroll Speaker of the Senate Box 1851 Saga polces questoned Ths student has a few questons n regard to Saga Food Servce: 1) Why does the grll lst ts closng tme at 9 p.m., but when you go n at 15 tl 9 they refuse to wat on you? (Note: Such eatng establshments as McDonalds, Burger Chef, etc., have been known to serve a half hour after closng tme.) 2) Why s a quarter pound ham- Senator explans poston on bll As one of the so-canea 'ntellectual lghtweghts and legslatve deadbeats" of the ASB Senate, felt compelled to respond to Frday's edtoral knockng the Senatoral veto of the socal preference bll. You stated that, by votng aganst ths bll, we are overlookng the nterests of themtsu students. You seem to feel that the ASB Senators exst smply to pass every bll and resoluton that comes along, hence, to "reflect the mood of the students." Before meetng on any occason to consder legslaton, the Senators are sent copes of the resolutons and blls. Before vote, always read each pece of legslaton and consder the opnon of the students represent. The nput that receved concernng ths partcular bll was absolutely negatve. So, yes, can honestly say that my consttuents dd not wantnonrestrcted bousng. My purpose as Senator, as t has always been, s to represent the students of MTSU not the bellgerent opnon of Sdelnes. Joy Heath Box 4266 burger the same prce as McDonald's quarter pound hamburger, even though t's not as good? 3) Why s an organzaton such as Saga allowed to make huge profts from students who can't really afford to eat at ther establshments n the frst place? (Note: The prmary purpose of a food servce on campus should be to provde students wth the least expensve food possble wth the best qualty possble.) 4) Why s one pece of sausage 3 cents when you can buy a whole pound for about $1.49; and why s the prce of one egg 25 cents when for about 5 cents you could buy a whole dozen? These are but a few questons, and am appealng to someone n authorty to answer them for me. The goal of the recommendatons s to "come up wth a better commttee system," by "creatng some commttees, combnng some and elmnatng others," Scarlett commented. "'d thought for a long tme that the commttees should report to a vce presdent nstead of to me," Scarlett contnued. The frst seeds of change wthn the commttee system were sown some two years ago when a selfstudy of the school revealed a lack of faculty and student partcpaton and nput on campus commttees. 11 Entertanment Sdelnes October 7,1975 After long absence, Allmans come through by Rcky Paul After a lengthy two year absence, the Allman Brothers Band has fnally returned to recordng wth ther newest release, "Wn, Lose or Draw". Many tmes such a long perod wthout any product from a group can mean that they are stallng for tme, because of a lack of deas, materal or the lke. But the Brothers have come through presentng ther many sdes very well. BetLs takes up most of the album wth hs three tunes that nclude two vocal performances and a lengthy nstrumental. "Just Another Love Song" and "Lousana Lou and Three Card Monty John" fng Betts sngng hs, what seem's customary, countrysh tnged tunes and twangng out leads on gutar. The former s a song about a brokenhearted lover and the latter a song dealng wth two gamblers that remnds one of "Rambln' Rchard Belts Man". Betts truly shnng moment comes, however, on the nstrumental, "Hgh Falls". After a bref abstract style openng bassst Lamar Wllams starts off wth catchy bass lne that the rest of the group bulds on to -g~ SUNRSE SHOP 19 South Maple Ths Week's Specal ntroduce the man theme of the song. Panst Chuck Lea vel and Betts then use the cookng and surgng backng of the group to showcase ther solos. Leavell does an electrc pano foray frst that has hm coverng the keyboard thoroughly before returnng to the theme at whch tme Betts comes n slowly and then bulds to analmost clmactc endng before slowly comng down and endng the song. The ttle track of the album s a mournful ballad about beng stranded n jal that has Allman gvng hs best vocal performance of the album and perhaps snce "Eat A Peach". The two nonorgnals, "Can't Lose What You Never Had" and "Sweet Mama" are the opener and closer for the album respectvely. "Can't Lose What You Never Had" s a Muddy Waters tune that proves a good kcker showng all the band members well. Drummers Butch Trucks and Jamoe and Wllams drve thngs along and Allman does a growlng vocal. Betts and Leavell contrbute sklled solos. "Sweet Mama", wrtten by Blly Joe Shaver, s another blues wth a steady backbeat and Betts vocal. After what many felt was a below par effort wth "Brothers and Ssters", t seems the Allman Brothers Band s once agan on the track as a top Southern rock outft.
