1 FEBRUARY 28, 1980 SSUE 365 UNVERSTY OF MSSOUR/SANT LOUS Councl approves budget. PERFORMER: Ken Jnng, an UMSL psychology student, per forms wth hs band, "The Bg Hotel" n J.C. Penney Audtor! urn. The concert, Feb. 17, was sponsored by KWMU [photo by WUey Prce]. Mary T. Weller The executve commttee of Central Councl, UMSL' s student government, approved ts budget recommendatons Thursday Feb. 21 n a move volatng Councl's by-laws. The by-laws state budget recommendatons must be approved by Councl as a whole. Approval was rendered mpossble after a call for quorum at Councl's Feb. 17 meetng; executve commttee acton was the only alternatve snce the budget recommendaton was due for submsson to the Budget Commttee Frday Feb. 22. When questoned about the "move Yates Sanders, student body vce presdent, sad, " don't lke gong aganst the by-laws but ths was a dre emergency.', Ths year' s budget recommended expendtures of S8015, a 10 percent ncrease of the S7292 total. Proposals were nomnated by Mark Knollman, student body presdent, and Sanders, wth the fnal draft beng a compromse. Appropratons for admnstraton expenses (SlO60) and specal projects (S00) were unanmously approved wthout dscusson. An allotment for travel expenses, however, caused a heated debate. Sanders' budget suggested S450. for travel, a S40 ncrease over last year, whle Knollman proposed SlO00, a S590 ncrease. " reel ths s reasonable snce we couldn't attend a second Urban 13 conference for the S410 spent ths year and consderng the average Urban 13 college attends two conferences a year," Knollman sad. Sanders countered, "We'd be laughng ourselves out of commttee wth that knd of request, especally snce there sn't enough money for Speech & Debate to travel or Model Unted Natons to get a room for a conventon n St. Lous." "What does S00 really accomplsh for travel expenses?" asked Gary Esayan, Councl charman, when a S550 appropraton was suggested. "Look at the past year's record. Are we worthy of more money. especally for travel? Be re~sonable, look at the hard facts. " Esayan nomnated a S500 travel expendture, whch was moved by Sanders and seconded by Kevn Chrsler, parlamentaran. The moton passed 5 to 1. Wages account for 66 percent of the budget. Presdental and vce-presdental stpends were ncreased 15 percent snce no ncreases have been made snce 1975, brngng ther stpends to S2300 and S725, respectvely (an ncrease of S200 and S125. New lne tems were added to wage & payroll n three nstances. Both budget suggestons ncluded the nsttuton of an admnstratve research staff consstng of three non-councl members to assst the presdent and vce-presdent, research legslaton and undertake related nvestgatons. After short dscusson, a moton made b y Esayan to allow S1200 for stpends to create such a staff passed unanmously. The Councl executve commttee called the specal meetng whch mght also be used to appont a new admnstratve charperson and parlamentaran. Effectve today, Kevn Chrsler, Councl admnstratve charman and parlamentaran, has resgned from Councl andn announced that he has no nten- ton of runnng for any offce ths sprng. Chrsler's announcement came as a surprse to many who though that he would be runnng for ether Presdent or Vce presdent of the student body n the Aprl electons. n resgnng, Chrsler sad the two man reasons were grades and a stagnatng Councl. "Grades are the man consderaton," Chrsler sad, "but f was gettng anythng out of Councl would stay wth t." Chrsler stressed that he dd not want to attack anyone n Councl "but Councl needs help and don't thnk the people that are n t are makng radcal enough changes." Chrsler sad he doesn't foresee many changes soon. "'d love to come back but not untl some changes are made." A March meetng had already been slated for after sprng break, but Councl members felt specal tme was needed to consder ASUM. Ths meetng wll not take the place of the regular March meetng. ASUM started at UMSL just under a year ago when the student body voted to pay one' dollar a semester to fund the lobbyng group. A student board of drectors, : fve from UMC and three from -«Black Musc Seres wll be -< presented here next month 1 The Mnorty Student Servce Coalton and the Black Hstory Project of the Western Hstorcal Manuscrpts Collecton-St. Lous are co-sponsorng a Hstorcal Black Musc Seres to be held n conjuncton wth Black Culture Month. The project wll be funded by the UMSL Student Programmng \ Board. The muscal forms most commonly thought of as Black musc wll all be represented, ragtme, jazz, gospel and soul. The schedule s as follows: UMSL, are elected each year to set polcy for the group. Recently there has been concern among some Councl members as to the effectveness of ASUM for the UMSL campu.s. Most of the concern centers around whether UMSL students are gettng as much out of ther money as Columba students. When ASUM was attemptng to be afflated wth the UMSL campus, offcals promsed that UMSL would be gettng everythng that Columba students get. Proponents of ASUM agree that there has been some delay n establshng all of the pro- 1 grams here that are avalable n Columba, but lay some of the blame on UMSL offcals for not gvng all the materals that were avalable. ASUM s due to have a referendum next year but offcals have agreed that f "a group of students feel adamantly that they are gettng the shaft, they could petton for a referen dum. what's nsde. Senate dscusses new school The status of the optometry school was the prmary topc of questons asked by UMSL faculty members to Mel George, vce-presdent of academc affars for the UM system, when he addressed the Senate meetng on Tuesday, Feb. 26 "Could you explan Presdent Olson' s reason n recommendng aganst the optometry school?" asked Frederc Pearson, assocate professor of poltcal scence. "Presdent Olson's reasonng was smple, but t tended to get lost n dscusson of the ssue," sad George. "Certan thngs had to be done, certan thngs had to happend to get the optometry school off the ground. Those thngs, for example, a sgned contract wth another state and guaranteed federal fundng, ddn't happen, nor dd t look lke there was any prospect of them happenjng. "Further reasonng ncluded the nablty of ths unversty to match tutons of other nsttutons of optometry because of bll T we had to charge the prces under 1691, other nsttutons made t qute clear that they were not nterested n a regonal schoo," George sad. " n all farness to prospectve students and the prospectve dean canddate," George contnued, "Olson dd not feel he could recommend the school under the current standng of bll 1691." When asked f, n fact, the admnstraton was opposed to the dea of a regonal optometry school, George sad "the Unversty s commtted to a polcy of regonalzaton," ctng the examples of the regonal polcy wth Unversty of Kansas' school of archtecture and UM's school of dentstry. "As to the status of the optometry school, read n last nght's Post Dspatch that the Chancellor s encouraged by recent acton," sad Chancellor Arnold B. Grobman n hs report to the senate. Douglas Durand, assocate dean of the school of Busness Admnstraton and charperson of the commttee on Physcal Facltes and General Servces also reported at the meetng. Durand presented the commttee's eleven recommendatons concernng physcal mprovements under the "UMSL 2000" plan, developed last year. 4 page 4Febl'UU')' 28, 1980 vewponts Optometry school update The St. Lous Post Dspatch dd an analyss of the stuaton wth our proposed optometry school. Late n the story there was a quote that may become sgnfcant n the school's future. The quote reads: Robertson vewed the matter as not so much of an educatonal ssue as a problem of health manpower for the state, whch has no optometry tranng school, publc or prvate, to replace an agng and dwndlng corps of optometrsts. The shortage s especally acute n rural areas because 90 percent of the state's 400 optometrsts practce n St. Lous, Kansas Cty, Sprngfeld and Columba. "The ssue really s: Should any Mssouran have to drve 95 mles to St. Lous or another county to get an eye exam and glasses?" Robertson sad. t should be noted that the opnon was that of an outsde observer not a member of the Unversty. But t sn't hard to magne that the dea mght be ganng support n the Board of Curators. The state legslature s movng swftly n passng blls that back the optometry school. Unfortunately no menton s made of the locaton of the school. n lght of ther past actons and because of recommendatons, members of the Board may accept the support of the legslature and then turn the school over to ther pet UMC or UMR campuses. n an effort to stay one step ahead of what we must now vew as the opposton, the Current s statng now that such a plan s unacceptable. For nearly a decade the optometry school has been slated for ths campus. UMSL offcals have worked hard to get the school to the pont t s. Councl needs better focus Almost regardless of offce, canddates nvarably promse to streamlne the sze of the group ther n to make t run more effcently. Throughout the year the Knollman / Sanders admnstraton has been forced to acheve ths goal n order to have a hope of meetng quorum. For ths reason, Councl's budget request, whch rases the number of pad executves from three to 13)s partcularly unusual. The debate breaks down to the adapton of an admnstratve research staff that wll assst the executve branch of student government. When wll Councl learn that ths admnstratve branch, charged wth "look: ng, nto student ssues" s what the entre Councl should be dong n the frst place? When they fnally do they'll be able to get more than 18 people at monthly meetngs and be able to justfy payng 13 people.. A MAN'oF fr{ TOW;Q'\& HE\~1H CfSU~~ "11) Sf: 1JW,.L! EttE rs Cr.tques crtc Dear Edtor: n the February 21, 1980 ssue of the Current, cnema crtc C. Jason Wells nssted that he tred to lke "All That Jazz." "t's just that have all ths common sense," he explaned. Tme magazne's crtc Frank Rch would probably agree, so much that he produced a smlarly slanted crtque on December 31, Wow, tllat s common. The pont of the matter s that both crtcs welded ther pens at the same drab lst of concdences, ndcatng that perhaps Drector and Co-wrter Bob Fosse's flm s not about death or showbz, but rather pretentously, about Fosse hmself.' That s true, of course, and had they watched the Tomorrow Show two weeks ago they mght have heard Fosse openly admt ths somewhat basc fact; Fosse used many facets of hs own lfe to speak hs theme. Some wrters tend to do that. " All That Jazz" s not about death/' or showbz, as Wells dsclosed,; yet nether s t what 'Wells summed up as "a banal, pretentous bt of self-ndulgence." ' ~ All That Jazz" s a flm about obsesson. Once ths s realzed, all of those seemngly self-ndulgent reflectons of Fosse's past no longer dstract, but nstead, enhance the flm. Had Fosse remembered to "control hs narcsssm," he would have undercut hs theme. As t stands however, he underscored t, though a few people stll seem to mss the pont. Choreographer Joe Gdeon (superbly portrayed by Roy Scheder- defntely agree wth Wells about that) s a showbz workoholc. He communcates sole!y throu.,gh dance, as we see n a beautful sequence n whch he teaches ballet to hs daughter (Erzsebet Fold). Hs obsesson wth dance overrdes hs desre for food and sleep, so Gdeon compensates wth cgarettes, drugs, and booze. Hs obsesson supersedes love; when asked the name of one of hs many compromsng female companons, Gdeon s tongue-ted. To hm, love s just one more 'blssful channel toward the perfecton of hs art. Says Gdeon, "lbeleve n sayng love you. t " beleve n sayng, ' love you.' t helps you to concentrate.". And ultmately, the obsesson takes control of Gdeon' s desre for self-preservaton. Pognantly, he suffers a heart-attack, an encroachment on the symbolc center of lfe, and choreographs all the way to hs death-n fact, he even choreographs hs death. And n the' grand fnale, he perfects t. Gdeon, lke Fosse, s the embodment of obsesson. "All That Jazz" s not a "muscal-comedy," nor does the publcty nsnuate that t mght be-any more that "Har" leads one to beleve that "Head and Shoulders" mght have released a two-hour commercal. Fosse's move-muscal s very mportantly about Fosse, but only for the purpose of provdng us wth perhaps one of the most nakedly satrcal studes of obsesson ever produced. And, by the way, Frank Rch ddn't excessvely (or obsessvely) agree wth Wells about "All That Jazz"; Rch felt that the dance numbers were exctpg. Wrter favors keepng UMSL ~ewspaper drve Dear Edtor,. Recently (Feb. 4-15), the UMSL group for women's ath; letcs sponsored a newspaper drve here on campus. Ths event was propagated by placng collecton boxes at varous ponts around the unversty and was promoted as a "fund rasng project." What my queston s s that s such an enterprse can prove proftable over a two week perod, why not gve t a try on a more permanent bass?, UMSL organzatons, as well as UMSL tself, could make good use of ths added ncome. The boxes themselves are farly unobtrusve and the amount that ~~~~J could easly be gathered up n the Student Unon and the cafetera alone would add up ' quckly.,ff ths partcular endeavor was successful, the campus could expand ts facltes so that recyclable alumnum and glass mght also be collected. At present, UMSL serves ts communty n many ways, but perhaps none of these would be as valuable as provdng an example for t to re-nvest ts resources rather than just throwng them away. Thnk about t. "1 need sx volunteers to hang from the celng lghts," was the next word from our joval guardsman. Actually, ths poor shnook had long snce passed joval, and was well on hs way to obnoxous. Beng taller than most, 1 "s ths t? Forty-two students n ths barn? Boy, 1 feel lke a bad comedan n a cheap burlesque house." The students wandered about, tryng to select from the three hundred avalable seats. Several lad mattresses across the tops of a group of desk-chars and dozed restfully. Others smply skpped up and down the asles sngng Campbell's Soup chants. Eventually, these two dsproportonate classes were balanced out, and the color-coded breathng system and bed mattresses were dscarded. Several perverts n the crowded class, however, Jd sue the unversty to have the sardne-lke condtons restored (one was a flasher, tw~ were gropers). Now realze that UMSL s dong ts best, and that mxups lke those wth classrooms can- - not be helped. How about those elevators? See "Lunacy," page 6 etra Electra to open ths weekend A play that has strred controversy among theatre scholars for hundreds of years wll be the UMSL Unversty Players' next producton n the Benton Hall Theatre on February 29, March 1 and 2 at 8:00 pm. The play s Electra by Sophocles and the controversy surrounds the classfcaton of the play. Wrtten n the late 5th century B.C. and produced at the "Great Donysan" festval n Athens, probably around 415 B.C., Electra has caused crtcs and scholars to hold broadly dfferng vews about the generc label for the play. Some crtcs call Electra one of the most senstve Greek tragedes extant today, whle others mantan that t s not a tragedy at all. Regardless of the classfcaton, most crtcs agree that Electra remans as one of the most powerful peces of Greek dramatc lterature. The story that surrounds the acton of the play dates back to the fabled Trojan War. As E. F. Watlng descrbes, Agamemnon and Menelaus, the sons of Atreus, held jont command of the Greek fleet and army whch went to Troy to recapture Menelaus' errng wfe, Helen, and wreak vengeance on the cty to whch she had been entced. Before the expedton could sal from Auls, Agamemnon was faced wth the necessty to sacrfce hs daughter phgenea n order to proptate Artems and obtan a far wnd for hs passage. He dd ths; hs fleet reached Troy, and ten years later he returned vctorous. But meanwhle hs wfe Clytaemnestra had taken Aegsthus as her lover, and together they planned to kll Agamemnon on hs return. The deed was done, and Aegsthus regned n Agamemnon's place. The daughters Electra and Chrysothems lved on n the house of death for many years. But the youngest chld, Orestes, had been entrusted by Electra to the care of a fathful frend who took hm away and watched over hm tll he came to manhood, when he was bdden by Apollo to return home and avenge hs father's death. The play tells how Orestes came, at frst unrecognzed by Electra, and then, revealng hmself to her, accomplshed wth her help the death of ther father's murderers. One of the jobs of a theatre drector n cooperaton wth the theatre desgners ls to create on the stage a sutable socety n whch the acton of the partcular play can take place. When dealng wth older plays, ths s often accomplshed by the use of hstorcally accurate scenery, costumes, manners, etc. :sometmes, however, the drector and desgners may develop an abstracton from the hstorcal that allows the stage socety to be placed n a totally dfferent envronment. Rather than place Electra n antquty the UMSL producton wll surround the acton wth an abstract futurstc envronment that s as alen to the audence as the ancent Greek settng would be. Abstract sculptures, plastc meda projectons, lght llusons, and futurstc costumes, replace the Greek chton and the classc stone and column settng. The scrpt tself remans unchanged and ntegrates beautfully nto ths new socety. Performng the ttle role wll be UMSL senor Elzabeth Peterson wth support from Sam Papa as Orestes, Patty Woods as Crysothems, Annette Barsellott as Clytaemnestra, Jason Wells as the fathful Tutor, Dan O'Sullvan as Aegsthus, and Robert Poole as Pylades. The chorus of Mycenaen women ncludes: Chrstne Belsky, Susan McConnell, and Karen Wllams. Reserved seat tckets are on sale at the UMSL nformaton Desk n the Unversty Center at $2.00 for the publc and '$1.00 wth an UMSL D. Tckets wll also be sold at the door. ]t. -'" Na8d80m8', extra money? cas8~ 'ad Take'out a " the UMSL, Currant. ny're trea to stud8nt81 \

6 page 6/Februuy 28, 1980 maslc TRVR by Dove Read Good and bad of soundtracks Erc Poole Bette Mdler s surely the quntessental Queen of Trash. Her flm debut n "The Rose~' was the hghlght of a moton pcture whch seems to be "n" wth the upscale "raunchchc" crowd. No doubt, for t tells a tale many 'of them can dentfy wth. As you probably know, ths story s supposedly based (although everyone assocated wth the flm denes the obvous) on the lfe of Jans Jopln - well, at least loosely. After all, Jans ddn't have Bette's Broadway mannersms, nose, and unparalleled sense of comedy tmng n tellng postvely purple jokes. Ths album has been recently labeled the "fastest sellng soundtrack n hstory", whch no doubt s a statement on ths generaton's preference for deafness. Few albums are so over amplfed and under mxed as ths one. Perhaps part of the problem for the mushysoundng cacaphony was that of recordng before a lve crowd rather than under studo condtons ( gorthe feelng that on several of the fast-paced numbers, a group of about seventy-fve twelve-year-olds were n the wngs practcng lessons from "Fun Wth Strngs" on ther gutars - all before amplfers of vesuval magntude). Ths s not a statement on the qualty of Ms. Mdler's back-up band n the flm - put away those letter bombs you radcals. Qute the contrary. The Rose Concert Band was exceptonal, partcularlv on "When A Man Loves a Woman" and "Stay Wth Me." On the rest of the songs, forget t, but on those two they excell (okay, so lke to lve dangerously-'m a Republcan). beleve that the major problem les n the fact that, because these songs were recorded lve durng the move; Ms. Mdler sounds lke a cross between a horny elk and a nasal Hyena. Ths could not be helped, because n the mm her character, Rose (gads, how clever), s gong downhll, both psychologcally and vocally. Therefore, the songs must be sung rather badly to audbly show the audence her steadly deprecatory vocal abltes. Ths does not make fof' an album of especally subtle musc by any means. Of the, "n concert" songs, there s only one C. Jason Wells wll hate me for ths, but lked "All That Jazz." That s, lked the.~ score. t's strange how a really nane or. unspectacular muscal can have a bestsellng soundtrack (case n pont-" Anne"), yet, 'm sure that "All That Jazz" wll be jonng that elte group. The flm tself was dsappontng ( was hopng to get some of C.J.'s hatemal).as our own Mr. Wells stated. However, the musc (at least n terms of lstenng enjoyment) s farly entertanng. As n "Dancn"', Fosse's smash Broadway show, he had employed an unusual varety of musc, rangng from the toe-stompng beat of "On Broadway" to t.he classcal "Concert n G." For lsteners Wth broad tastes n musc- know you're out there somewhere-ths soundtrack s an nterestng buy.. Assessng the album as a whole, fnd only two major flaws: one, that Ann Renkng, who was Fosse's lover on screen and n real lfe, sang only one short song. She possesses a fne, husky voce wth marvelous control, a~d f~r Fosse to vrtually gnore such an asset tn hs quest for self ndulgence n ths mov.e ~oh yeah, C.J.) s sheer lunacy ( say Ms. Retnktng n "Dancn'" on Broadway, and fell passonately nto unrequted love after she refused my offer of servces as her personal slave); second, that Roy Scheder and Erzsebet Fold-who played Gdeon's daughter, Mchelle-were permtted to sng on the album. Now know all about cnema realsm and stayng n character, but really. Some people just don't have the ppes (although Scheder's do resemble. some athsmatc acordan valantly attemptng to reman on key). And don't gve ponts for tryng. Hghlghts of the album are as follows: frst,. the fnger-snappng, asle dancng rendton of the old standard, "On Broadway," by George "" 4'..,..." "",',",. whch- feel qualfes as a dstnctve, artful pece of musc. "When a Man Loves a Woman" s slow, bluesy, and grtty, wth just the rght touch of soulful raspng by Mdler. Her own sngng style drectly complements ths song as she wnds her way through, twstng the lyrcs wth a voce lke jagged glass. Agan, there are other potentally exctng songs, but because of her character's gradual submsson to booze and plls, they understandably sound lke somethng from Mars. Cheer up, "Rose" fans (frst of all, let's not be superfcal and lke Rose just because she smokes anythng that sn't naled down and pops plls lke we pop lfesavers). dd lke two other songs on the album, nether of whch, surprsngly enough, are "lve" recordngs. One s "Love Me Wth a Feelng," an absolutely provocatve but hystercally funny tune about Mdler's favorte subject - oh, you know. Anyway, t once agan gves Bette the opportunty to get down and booge ( feel lke 'm n a tme warp), and she does so wth obvous relsh. The other s the ttle song, a ballad sung n Mdler's normal voce (that's supposed to be a complement, but don't know how to fx t). There are others who could do more wth ths song, but t s plenty sad and depressng enou2h when sung n her straght. forward ballad ~tyle. thnk ths song would ve wth "When A Man Loves A Woman" for my choce as hghlght (though the hgh was rather low) of the album. f you don't agree, that's just tough. Oh, don't get me wrong. 'm not tellng you to avod ths pece of over-rated trpe at all costs. 'm merely warnng you that f you: a) value your hearng; 6) don't get excted by hearng some wldly coarse language; or c) lke to be able to dscern an actual melody (many wll agree ths apples only to musc majors), then "The Rose" s probably not gong to senrl you nto spasms of delght. f you are of the opnon that drugs, sex, and rock-and-roll are the answers to lfe, death, and mmortalty, then rush rght out to your local wax stand and.snatch up a copy. But just remember, never promsed' you a rose garden. Benson. Scorng ths song to a cnorus audton n the flm seemed to me rather trte (that's lke sngng HHgh Hopes" n one of the perverse scenes n "Crusn"'), but the song nevertheless stands as a funky(?) pop-rock tune; second, "Bye Bye Love," a song wth panfully nane lyrcs and not partcularly nterestng musc. t rates as a hgh spot because of an excellent : adaptaton and arrangement by Ralph Burns. Ths number n the flm was somewhat morbd-though brllantly choreographed by Fosse-but as a muscal number on the album t rates as one of the best; thrdly, the short but joltng "There'll Be Some Changes Ma~e" by Ann Renkng. The one most mportant factor regardng ths soundtrack s that those same songs whch were so purposely clched n the moton pcture have-for the most part-flourshed n ther transton from my to vnyl. f taken smply as an artstc work, ths conglomeraton of pop, rock, classcal, and "show" musc (any musc whch defes defnton) s a neat, pat collecton. t's varety wll probably gve t greater audence appeal than most soundtrack albums, partcularly because the format s lke that of an ordnary album-no recurrng themes, dalogue excerpts (the producers. ddn't want the album restrcted to behnd-the-counter sales), etc. n retrospect, must say that have grown to lke the, album more and more. Ths was probably accomplshed by forgettng the raunchy, annoyngly reterated flm plot. There's stll enough of t n the album to wpe the smle off Dnah Shore's face (fve songs deal wth dyng, whch, for those who revel n pessmsm, can be an absolute overdose). But 'm a smple-mnded schmuck who doesn't get off on heavy thematcal mplcatons. Matter of fact, don't even understand them. t's just part of lfe, love, and all that jazz. 1. 9 February 28, 1980/page 9 sports Cagers lose two as season comes to a close Mke Hempen The basketball season has been a tough one for the UMSL Rvermen, and ths past weekend's games eptomzed the season as well as any. On Saturday, the Rvermen traveled to Kansas Cty to play the Unversty of Mssour Kansas Cty. Kangaroo guard Vnne Gayle burned the Rvermen wth 33 ponts, as UMKC won, "We played well defensve y," sade UMSL coach Tom Bartow. "But offensvely we had 25 turnovers and that was the dfference n the game." The Rvermen shot 55% from the floor, and that was wthout gettng many nsde shots, accordng to Bartow. OVERPOWERED UMSL 71 WRGHT ST. 78 UMSL: Rucks 2, Krby 16, Scheter 7, Harrs 28, DeGeare 6, Benne 4, Houston 8 WRGHT ST: Mller 2, Benson 10, Bragg 12, Wlson 9, Crowe 9, Pckerng 2, Hartngs 12, Welch 20, Mannng 2 The gam was close untl about fve mnutes remaned n the frst half. That s when UMKC went n front to stay, although the Rvermen dd have a chance to take the lead wth about two mnutes left n the game, but they ddn't take advantage of the opportunty. "We had a chance to beat them but we ddn't take care of the ball," sad Bartow. Wlam Harrs paced the Rvermen wth 22 ponts, whle Alan DeGeare and Rck Krby added 16 apece. UMSL's other game ths past weekend was played at the Mark Twan Buldng Monday nght aganst Wrght State n the fnal home game of the year. The. Rvermen played well, but not well enough to beat the Raders, who are ranked thrd n Dvson natonally. The score was ' The Rvermen took an early 10-4 lead, but the Raders came back and eventually took ther frst lead of the game, The Raders held ther bggest lead when they led late n the half, but the Rvermen came back wth eght straght ponts to go up by fve, When the half ended, the Rvermen led by that same margn, Revamped. baseball Rve'rmen :a 1 DUNK: Brad Scheter slams t home n UMSL's loss to Wrght St. [photo by WHey Prce] prepare for season opener UMSL wll open ts 47-game sprng baseball schedule wth acton n a round-robn toornament March 10, n Albuquerque, New Mexco. The Rvermen, perennal NCAA Dvson contenders, wll agan play a number of Dvson powers ths year. UMSL s scheduled to play doubleheaders aganst Mssour Columba, the Unversty of llnos and SU -Carbondale. UMSL wll also face the Unversty of New Mexco n the season-openng tournament and contnue ts seres wth crosstown Dvson rval, St. Lous Unversty. After the 9-game Albuquerque toorney, UMSL wll return to St. Lous to open ts home season, Thursday, March 20, aganst the lllnos nsttute of Technology. UMSL coach Jm Dx guded hs Rvermen to a fmsh last year-second n the NCAA North Central Regon. However, gone from last year's squad are four players who had receved All-Amerca recognton. Gone are leftfelder Greg Ready (Hazelwood Central) who was frst-team All-Amerca n 1978, shortstop Skp Mann (CBC), honorable menton All-Amercan n 1978 and 1979, centerfelder Jm Lockett (Jennngs), second team All-Amerca n 1979 and catcher Marty Flores (Kennedy), honorable menton All-Amerca n n the second half, Wrght State took control mmedately by scorng seven of the frst nne ponts of the half, and tyng the game, The Rvermen moved ahead agan, twce, but each tme the leads were bref. Wrght State gradually took the lead and expanded t. They bult ther lead to eght, 46-38, wth 13 mnutes left. For the remander of the game, the Raders' lead fluctuated between fve and nne ponts. We made more mstakes than they dd," sad Coach Bartow. "f we had executed three more tmes we would have won. But we ddn't playa bad game. " One contrast n the game was the Raders' shootng n the frst half as compared to the second. They shot only 30% and scored 26 ponts n the frst half. They shot 63% and scored 52 ponts n the second. Bartow thnks he knows the reason for the turnaround. "We played decent defense n ~he frst half, but we ddn't play Mann, who won the Dvson natonal stolen base crown n 1979, s now playng n the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system..lockett fnshed second, natonally, n Dvson battng (.483) and s playng n the Chcago Cubs system. Despte the losses, UMSL boasts a number of prze recruts and Dx s optmstc about the season ahead. Some key returnees for the Rvermen nclude sophomore outfelder Mke Stellern, senor thrd baseman Steve Karrasch and ptcher Keth Kmball. The Rvermen are expected to feld a speedy team wth good defense. The ptchng also seems to be mproved and that could be the key to a successful season. EASY TWO: UMSL's Denns Benne and Tom Houston follow up a shot as well n the second half," he sad. He also ponted out that Wrght State got four more nsde shots n the second half than n the frst half. UMSL was led n scorng by guard Wllam Harrs who scored 28 ponts. He was followed by senor guard Rck n a loss to Wrght St. [photo by WHey Prce] Krby wth 16 ponts. No one else was n double fgures. The two losses dropped the Rvermen's record to 8-17 for the year wth only the season fnale left. That was played Wednesday nght at Southern lllnos Unversty-Edwardsvlle aganst the Cougars. Krby may break shootng record Jeff Kucbno Rck Krby, a 6-foot senor guard on the UMSL basketball squad, has done more n two years at UMSL than most Rvermen have n four. The scrappy backcourt wzard from Urbana, lllnos has been a stalwart n the U~SL lneup ever snce hs arrval ' from Parkland Junor College last year. Krby has compled some mpressve career statstcs along the way, and, dependng on how he dd n last nght's season fnale at SU-Edwardsvlle, may have broken a school season record. Krby entered last nght's game wth a season feld goal percentage of.574 on 152 feld goals out of 265 attempts. That mark tes the school record set by the former Rvermen great Hubert Hoosman n the season. Had Krby not been njured earler n tl).e season, though, he may have broken the record wth ease. Krby njured hs left ankle n a practce drll on February 1 (the day before UMSL hosted Southeast Mssour St.). He mssed the next three games and returned to the lneup February 18 when UMSL upset natonal-power Easter llnos, He only scored sx ponts, httng on three of seven shots from the feld, but played a steady game.. -' n the nne games pror to hs njury, Krby shot 64 percent from the feld and rased hs season percentage above 58 percent. Krby has been an asset to the Rvermen n more ways than shootng accuracy, however. He has scored over 700 ponts n hs career and currently s n twelfth place on the UMSL all-tme scorng lst. He has also accumulated over 100 asssts, 90 rebounds and s an excellent free throw shooter (78 percent). Hs career scorng average at UMSL was 15 ponts per game. On January 22, UMSL defeated McKendree, 95-88, and Krby led the Rvermen wth a season-hgh 31 ponts. He scored on medum to long-range jump shots, short bank shots, and layups. He proved tme after tme that he could score from anywhere on the floor and usually dd. Krby s not the only senor graduatng ths year. Alan DeGear, a 6-foot-7 forward from Crystal Cty, s the other. He had a dsappontng season ths year after startng all 26 games the prevous year. He average 13 ponts per game hs junor year (he transferred to UMSL that year from Jefferson Junor College), but slpped to sx ths year. Stll, he see "Krby" page 11

10 page 10/February.28, 1980 Toben says, No on can stop me now' Jeff Kuchno The quests of UMSL A Amercan canddates Roger Toben and Steve Jansen met wth mxed results at the Natonal Collegate Athletc Assocaton (NCAA) regonal wrestlng tournament held last weekend n St. Cloud, Mnnesota. Jansen was forced to bow out of the tourney early due to a rb njury suffered n a car accdent two days earler. Toben, on the other hand, advanced to fnals and defaulted to SW' s Tm Ervn, 4-3, because of a pnched nerve n hs neck. As a result of fnshng second, though, Toben earned a place n the ' 142-pound weght men class dvson of the natonal tournament ths weekend n Omaha, Nebraska. There' s a strong possblty that he may meet Ervn at natonals, and Toben s anxous for a rematch. "Ervn s pcked as one of the top 142-pounders n the naton, but know can beat hm," he sad. "There's no doubt about t. There wll be approxmately 16 wrestlers n Toben's weght class, and the top eght fnshers wll become All-Amercans. Toben s confdent he wll be one of the eght, f not the best. " Shampoo & Styleeut Only women! $7.00 '7711 ClAYTON HAD Jansen succumbs to fate Rck Capell Fate s one thng that can't be dodged and t just wasn't n the stars for UMSL grappler Steve Jansen to qualfy for possble All-Amercan honors ths year. On hs way home from hs job Wednesday mornng, Jansen was struck by a Laclede Gas truck whch slammed nto hs car broadsde. At the tme there was thought to be no serous njury whch would prevent hm from wrestlng n the regonals Frday and Saturday at St. Cloud State n Mnnesota. Two days later, however, Steve was unable to fnsh hs frst match due to several broken rbs, whch were dscovered later. "Ths was an unfortunate stuaton and very, very frustratng and very, very dsappontng for Steve," sad UMSL coach Tom Loughrey. Msfortune also plagued UMSL's other entry n the competton. However, Roger Toben managed to qualfy for the natonal competton at 142 pounds before an unusual njury forced hm out of the acton also. Toben opened up by soundly whppng Denns Stokes from St. Cloud State Ths automatcally qualfed Roger for the natonals snce t put hm n the fnals of the regonal. n the fnals, Toben met one of the naton's top men n SU-E's Tm Ervn. An exctng and close match was n the process when the two wrestlers bumped heads. Toben's neck suddenly went stff and the traner mmedately recognzed t as possble vertebrae damage. Toben was whsked away to the hosptal for X-rays. Fortunately, they were negatve. Of course, Toben lost the match by default but he may just get another shot at Ervn n the natonals. " was very surprsed at the nablty on my part to do certan thngs aganst Toben. He's a lot tougher than thought," sad Ervn. "t sure would be great f we could meet n the natonal fnals. " Coach Loughrey also thought Toben looked tough. "f he's 100 percent physcally there's no tellng how far he could go." So, ths year, Roger Toben gets hs shot. at the ultmate personal achevement. He wll travel to Omaha, Nebraska tomorrow wth coach Loughrey for hs well deserved shot at a possble All-Amercan honor. Women meet the challenge Mary Dempster "We were challenged," sad swm coach Don Maer, "and we more or less took that challenge." So speakng, coach Maer, proudly recapped the women's outstandng performances at Warrensberg, ths past weekend at the state meet. Ten teams were there; some from the Dvson, others from the Dvson. but they were all after one thng: the State Ttle. UMSL's ndvdual performances ranked near the top. Btze Hebron collected the most ponts for UMSL by placng fourth n the SO meter butterfly, sxth n the 200 fly, and seventh n the 100 fly. The second hghest scofer was Martha Casey, who placed sxth n the SO breaststroke, sxth n the 100 breast, tenth n the one meter dvng and nnth n the three meter dvng. Martha dd not compete, however, n her 200 breast event due to a foot njury sustaned durng the Saturday _!1lOrnng warmup. The other mpressve ndvdual results were as follows: Karen Cerncek: 12th n 200 freestyle and 11th n 1550 free. Mchelle Dran: 10th n 100 backstroke and 11th n 200 back. Teresa Eppert: 10th n 200 butterfly. Jule Mank: nnth n 100 backstroke and 12th n SO back. Cheryl May: 12th n 400 ntermedate medley. Paula Smth: nnth n SO breaststroke and 11th n 100 breast. Patty Wlson: second n SO freestyle. Swmmer Laura Gentry kcked four seconds off her tme n the 100 breast and just mssed placng n the 200 breast. The relay teams dd even better. The 400 medley relay team of Casey, Dran, Hebron and Wlson placed thrd, whle the 200 medley team of Casey, Hebron, Mank and Wlson placed fourth. n the freestyle relay events, all three teams placed ffth. n these three events, Cerncek, Hebron, Mank and Wlson swam n the 200 and 400 free, whle Cerncek, Dran, Eppert and May swam n the 800 free event. How dd UMSL do as a team? The women placed ffth n state, rght behnd Southeast Mssour State (frst), Central Mssour State (second), Washngton Unversty (thrd) and St. Lous Unversty (fourth). "'m really pleased wth ther accomplshments," sad Maer. "They have a lot to be proud of. " Ths Thursday, Frday and Saturday, fve of the UMSL women wll be travelng to South Dakota for regonals competton. They are Martha Casey, Karen Cerncek, Btze Hebron, Paula Smth and Patty Wlson. Just mssng the regonals qualfyng tme were freshmen Teresa Eppert and Mchelle Dran. Both came wthn hundredths of a second from placng. Next to money, recrutng s perhaps the most mportant facet of any athletc program. f anythng, t's the most ntense. The success of every ntercollegate team depends on the qualty of athletes t can convnce to sgn wth ts colege n return for an educaton. Coaches do a selng job on the prospects by explanng what the colege. does and doesn't have to offer. The prospects, meanwhle, must sft through al the offers and then make a decson. n short, recrutng s lterally a war between varous colleges whch ve for the top prospects avalable. At UMSC, athletc teams are at a dsadvantage because of a lack of money avalable for scholarshps. The only excepton to ths rule mght be the men's basketball team. The cagers receve decent scholarshps, housng and transportaton accommodatons whle the majorty of the other athletes do not. Therefore, t s amazng that these fnancally-weaker teams at UMSL have been able to brng n outstandng recruts n the past few years. For example, UMSL soccer and baseball teams can boast of many athletes who ft n ths category. The Rvermen kckers have had sx All-Amercans n ther hstory. Domnc Barczewsk (Oakvlle) and Dan Muesenfechter (McCluer), are the most recent, and they wll both be senors next season. Three former baseball Rvermen, Graylng Tobas, Jm Lockett and Skp Mann, are playng professonal ball n the mnor leagues. So, t's obvous that UMSL coaches take recrutng serously. They realze that a good recrutng year can be the tcket to a champonshp. UMSL's men's basketbal coach, Tom Bartow, agrees wth that phlosophy. "Good players make good coaches," he sad. "n recrutng, you have to convnce the recrut that hs needs and capabltes wll best be utlzed at your school. tell the top prospects that the major dfference between gong to a major college and here s that he'll have the opportunty to play sooner." Bartow has two players who are already here and wll become elgble next season. They are Erc Freeman, a 6-foot-9 transfer from Alabama-Brmngham, and Tm Jones, a 6-foot-4 transfer from Memphs. Freeman and Jones could fll the vod whch wll be left by the graduaton of senors Alan DeGeare and Rck Krby, but Bartow also plans to gve other ncomng recruts a chance. " plan to recrut about sx players wth two of them junor college players and four hgh school senors," sad Bartow. "'m lookng for the player wth quckness, ntensty and nate athletc ablty." "The only advantage we have over the MAA schools (UMSL wll jon the Mssour ntercollegate Athletc Assocaton next fall), s that we are sttng n the area that has the best hgh school wrestlers n the state," sad Loughrey. "We feel we have a real selng job to do. We have to let them (the north county wrestlers) know that we're buldng a sold program." Jm Dx, UMSL head baseball and assstant basketbal coach, s one of the most respected members of the athletc staff. Hs hard work and recrutng efforts have resulted n fve consecutve wnnng seasons. The baseball Rvermen have advanced to the regonal tournament al four years and the colege basebal world seres once under the drecton o{dx. Some of our past All-Amercans lke Greg Ready and Skp Mann were walk-ons, because we ddn't have enough scholarshp money." 12 page 12/Febnuuy 28, 1980 Conley's career closes wth happy endng Terr Moore For UMSL Senor Pat Conley, playng on the basketball team was a lot more fun and a lot easer ths year than n the past. After sufferng through a dsmal season n 78-79, ths year' s record of was a bg mprovement for the women. Even though they are below the.500 mark ths year, Conley feels the season has been exctng. "t was easer to get excted for the games," she sad. " t's so hard to get excted for the games after losng so many games. t also made t easer gong to practce, because those could get long at tmes." Conley felt t was a more balanced offense that was the key to mprovement ths year. Because she wasn't the only one who averaged over 10 ponts per game t was harder for other teams to key on one person. There would be someone there to pck up the slack f the opponent played her close. " gve a lot of credt to the coach (Joe Sanchez), " sad Conley. HE has a strong desre to wn and he gave that to the players; plus we had a young team, and when you can start from scratch t makes t a lot easer." Conley averaged 12 ponts per game ths season and scored 996 total n her four seasons at UMSL. Conley, a physcal educaton major, s an all around athlete. After graduatng from Sant Elzabeth Academy, she played two years of softball, three years of volleyball and four years of basketball at UMSL. "Basketball s my favorte, " Conley sad. "My brothers all used to play. They taught me a lot when was younger. t helps a lot f you fnd success n t." The fve-foot-nne forward has been the team captan for the last two years. She descrbed the role as beng the go between" between the players and the coaches, whch she felt was hard at the tme because of her quet nature. "But, we talked a lot about what was gong on," she sad. Conley, who s a left handed shooter, feels that s an advantage to her. She s an excellent baselne shooter who lkes to rebound and shoot the left handed hook shot when she gets Pat Conley, ~MSL senor to play nsde, whch she ponts out s not too often because of her heght. When Pat Conley came to UMSL she ddn't play too much as a freshman, but n her sophomore year she was voted the team's Most Valuable Player. Ths could be an ncentve to freshmen who don't play a lot," she sad. Ths year she was named to the all tournament team at the Thanksgvng Tourney, whch was one of the hghlghts of her career. Gong to State last year was also exctng for her. She ponted out that they had a poor record, but just happened to beat the rght teams. Conley feels next year's team wll be good f Coach Sanchez recruts a few key players, and f most of ths year's players return. She ponted out that n her years at UMSL a lot of players ether transferred or qut playng basketball. As for Pat Conley, when the gong got rough, she never thought of. quttng.
