STUDENTS enjoy Sprng at last years Alfred E Packard Day Role of BoEth cs by Doug Weaver Scence n other words, knowledge s not the enemy of relgon; for, f so, then relgon would mean gnorance; but t s schooldvnt y often the antagonst of Olver Wendell Holmes Holmes mght well have been entertaned last Frday nght, for rarely does one get the opportunty to hear representatves of the dscplne of relgon, and the scentfc dscplne of bology, debate over the handlng of ethcal concerns But such was the case, as n terested faculty and students met n the Lowry Center Faculty Lounge and consdered the role BoEth cs of and the envronment The dscusson was the latest n the contnung facultystude nt semnars conducted by the Relgon department The major overrdn g ssue n the dalogue was where to fnd a common meetng ground between scence and relgon t was antcpated that any agreement would be characterzed, n the sprt of Holmes, wth subtle antagonsm, and such was the case The relgon department was ntally represented by Prof Tom Ratt, and the bology department by Prof James Perley Perley, n hs openng remarks, quoted from Von Rensselaer Potters work BoEth cs Brdge to the Future Potter suggests that a brdge be bult between humansm and scence More specfcally, he suggests that ethcs can not be separated from ecologcal concerns, and thus decsonmakng concernng acton should be based on ethcs as well as bologcal facts Successful decsonmakng, Perley added, hnges upon ganng suffcent knowledge at a gven tme Ratt, who dd hs under graduate work n bology, opened hs remarks contendng that Potter does ndeed rely on humansm, but humansm n turn has ts roots n the Judeo Chrstan tradton Just how ofthese aware are people of the source norms? Ratt asked A lot of the norms would not be found noth er cultures as much as n one wth a JudeoChrsta n background The ssue moved then to the flexblty of theologcal dogma, schooldvnty or possbly Prof Donald Wse of the Bology department commented on ths Dscussed concern Those ndvduals who draw back on a hstorcal ethc have ceased to look at present ssues, he sad But scence tends to look at these present and future dates and ssues Prof Ratt countered by nsstng that one must be suspcous of bologsts t s not selfevde nt that bology wll acqure data and smply set down on solutons, he sad What s to gve consstancy to the norms? 3 Pag 2 VOCE Crtcsm of Arts Coverage Dear Edtor We have been assocated wth the VOCE for the past three years as flm and theatre crtcs and have some observatons to share wth you on the bass of that ere we depart for other clmes Coverage of the arts n the VOCE has always been sporadc at best There are several reasons, for ths Frst, there has never been an arts edtor, supervsng a staff of crtcs and a regular arts page Surely the qualty of our theatre, flm, and musc events alone merts such attenton A second major problem has been the noxous atttude that, whle last weeks convocaton and baseball scores mert careful coverage, last weeks artstc event s no longer newsworthy Ths s a e blanket of slence over events such as concerts and a serous problem for plays snce the paper goes to press on Thursday The flm crtc s requred to have seen the campus flms somewhere for the revew to appear onetm offcamp us may be more newsworthy than a local event, because t may affect art natonally as well as at Wooster, and because t may be more nterestng to the majorty of VOCE readers The mportant thng s that coverage of the arts need not be lmted to what mght prove fun for a Saturday or Sunday nght here at Wooster We urge you to appont an arts edtor, for next year, to naugurate a regular arts page, and to adopt a polcy of coverng events n depth n the next weeks ssue We further urge anyone nterested n wrtng for the VOCE n the area of the arts to contact the edtor and volunteer herh s servces Lastly, does anyone else out there feel the way we do? f so, please make your, sentments known to the edtor also We wll be gone from here n another four weeks f anythng s to be done to mprove the coverage of the arts n the VOCE the demand must exst for that next fall NallW Slater John W Hamln onetme Grade before the scheduled showng (the flms do not usually arrve n tme for prevews) Surprsngly enough, the arts are not just the performng arts Move and play revews are not enough to nform the campus of what Woosters own artsts (from all areas) are producng Serous crtcal or feature artcles on local art exhbts, a vstng lterary fgures wrtng, local artsts wth no connecton to the College, and on many other artstc happenngs (even THSTLE) rarely, f ever, appear n the VOCE Nor s t necessary that artcles deal drectly wth campus related artstc endeavors A recent achevement of a partcular Calforna or New York artst nflaton by Mchael Booth More serous than t perhaps at frst seems to be, the damage caused by the collapse of college gradng standards durng the past decade has already been too long gnored Qute smply too many students are recevng too many As and Bs, and less obvously, and a much naster very few topc to boot students, no matter how are beng flunked Probably nobody has ever accused the Amercas unversty of overusng common sense or, ndeed, of even usng t at all Presumably the baston of the ratonal mnd, the unversty s tself frequently run rratonally n competent, WaaaUr Halt? but the dea that no one must fal s at best unrealstc Besdes provdng rather a dubous defnton of success, such an dea s damagng to ntellectual growth For, lke other people, students tend to come up to the standards set for them Lower standards, or abolsh them altogether, and educatonal pop psychology theores or no t most cases the result wll be lower performance Of course such reasonng carres wth t far too great a burden of common sense to be of use to the unversty Yet we see ths sort of reasonng used elsewhere qute frequently, school cheated me out of a good Amercan hstory often n far more mundane settngs n a recent adeducaton of nternatonal an New York Tmes test have far The results the vertsement arlne emphaszes ts rgd reachng mplcatons on educaton As we approach standards for selectng plots; the end of the term at Wooster, we should keep magne your reacton to ths the results of ths test n mnd We must ask ourselves arlne f ts ad were to read what knd of educatons we are recevng here at the We let just about anyone fly our college planes But that, n effect, s Are our courses and tests geared only for what happens n college when memorzaton and not for the retenton of facts? f so, vrtually anythng handed n s (what relevance and perspectve does that gve to our passed not because t s actually futures? contnued from page 2 sgnncanty probably snt feasble today for that grossest of reasons, money The natons colleges and unverstes are scratchng as desperately as the rest of us to stay afloat fnancally, so admnstrators arent lkely to beam wth delght upon those nstructors who do uphold standards For to many admnstrators, students are monetary unts, and f they start gettng low grades and quttng or flunkng out or transferrng to easer schools, then the nstructors who are too tough are thought to be costng the school money ndeed, the governor of a state once taught n delvered an address whch was dstrbuted to the faculty of our state unversty acknowledgng the serous fnanco al dffcultes of the states educatonal program and sayng that the unverstys job, therefore, was to get as many students as possble nto each classroom then to keep them there by any possble means Ths can hardly be construed as a claron call for qualty educaton Now part of what a college nstructor s pad to do s the very dffcult and sometmes very panful task of evaluatng student performance Yet many admnstrators wll fre someone for dong hs task honestly (academc freedom s damned) f the result s too many low grades and wll retan someone else who tactly gnores t by keepng everybody smlng wth a lberal sprnklng of As and Bs The queston, then, snt a qualtatve one whether hgh standards are good or bad; or a moral one whether hgh standards are rght or wrong; the only queston that matters, t seems, s the fnancal one POEMS WANTED whether the monetary unt, the student, wll be lost The trend toward teacher evaluaton questonnares has helped foster nsecurty n those nstructors who would lke to upgrade standards Rodn and Rodn recently found that students rate most hghly nstructors from whom they learn the least, who also happen to be the nstructors who tend to grade lenently Smlarly, last fall Powell found that, teachers receve much hgher evaluatons from students when they are requred to do less work, receve hgher grades, and learn substantally less He concludes f t s true that students nadvertently gve hgher ratngs to nstructors who requre less work and gve hgher grades, and those nstructors are rewarded for good teachng by ther departments and the admnstraton, whle more demandng nstructors are punshed, then there s pressure for all nstructors to behave n ths way (thus, students) are shortchanged on the most mportant commodty whch s supposed to result from ther unversty experence learnng nstructors who do uphold academc standards, then, are not aganst students, but, rather, are tryng to ensure that students college years are worthwhle Moreover, the students themselves are not to blame for someone else overevaluat ng them Only the faculty only those who actually assgn grades wth the encouragement of supportve admnstrators, nstead of the oblquely threatenng postures these people too often assume, contnued on pg 5 The OHO SOCETY OF POETS s complng a book of poems f yon have wrtten a poem and would lke our selecton commttee to consder t for publcaton, send your poem and a selfaddress ed stamped envelope to OHO SOCETY OF POETS 1367EethSL Sute 229 Lncoln Bldg Cleveland, Oho 44114
