Perhaps t serves to nvolve local canddates and poltcs n the poltcal decsonmakn g process Not lkely, though A small mnorty of conventon delegates partcpate n the actual formulaton of a state platform A few more, mostly Republcan canddates, then drone the overwhelmngly general document to the rest of the delegates No opportunty, however, s gven the delegates for any questonng andor any but the most sterle debate of platform ssues n fact, random questonng of ther knowledge of specfc aspects of the platform confrms the fact that few delegates understand, or are even aware of, much more than mnute parts of the platform Thus the conventon process cannot exst ether as a clearnghouse for nformaton on the ssues or a vehcle for delegate nvolvement About the only legtmate functon of the state conventon process s ts ablty to humble ts partcpants and put ther humanty or lack of same (for example, Senator Doles asserton that, " was born only once not agan") on dsplay ts hard not to be humbled f, for example, you are former Oho governor John Brown and are reduced to teachng the audence, how to clap Enough hot ar to left the Goodyear blmp for a year Js expended by conventon speakers, but ther comments are nvarably negatve and often personally degradng ts a sad commentary on the Amercan voter that ths approach, rather than one n whch postve achevements and goals are stressed, seems to wn the greatest notce from the electorate Perhaps the greatest functon of the conventon process s the eyeopen ng effect t has on poltcal novces and outsders Only at a partsan conventon could a canddate for the state Supreme Court seek to advance hs campagn by crudely referrng to a presdental canddate as "mxng peanuts, baloney, and relgon," and make a dubous parallel between Robert Doles exemplary war record and a promse of more defense jobs for Oho Nether major party s less than equally gulty of perpetuatng these orges of rhetorc;
