The nsttutonal page has been renovated three tmes wthn the past few years as technology has advanced. t wll be ntroduced n early March, and t wll replace the exstng ste at whch has drawn crtcsm lately. Tm Masse, chef college relatons offcer, sad he s pleased wth the new ste. "The frst ste was not graphcally appealng," he sad. "Now, on ths second ste, there s too much nformaton. On the new. one there are only sx broad categores that make t easer to use and navgate." Accordng to Barbara McMullen, actng drector of academc computng, havng a more user-frendly ste s only one of the advantages. "One mportant aspect of the new ste s that t caters to a broader audence," she sad. 'The nsttutonal page has to play to slower modems because we want those folks to come n and see what we have to offer." Academc Computng put the fnal touches on the ste, but was not nvolved wth the ntal development. Accordng to Ann Wnfeld, drector of enrollment communcaton, she frst approached an ndependent desgner to create the ste n order to meet tme constrants. The desgner created the frst and second pages of the ste, whch were rejected because of a sudden change n focus. Wnfeld sad she then approached academc computng to fnsh the ste, after realzng t would be too expensve to contnue wth the desgner. Wnfeld sad she s pleased wth the product. "[The ste] s modern, clean, sophstcated, and represents Marst n a much more postve way," she sad. "Vsually, the pctures represent Marst of today. They show our students and our faculty nteractng." Masse sad updatng the ste was mportant because many people use ts resources. He sad he receves between 30 and 50 electronc malngs per week as a result of the ste.. "Most of them,"-he sad, "are from prospectve; students, alumn, reporters, and communty people nterested n Marst events." He sad the changes wll hopefully entce more people to look at Marst.. "To be a compettve ste you don't want people to get bored wth t," Masse sad. "We want people to say, 'Wow, ths s really new, let me explore wth t a lttle bt."' Jessca Hpolto, Melssa Gra>bll, Holly Munger, Jame Frost, Krsten Dreyer, and Paul Schnut wll represent Marst College n the Councl of Fashon Desgners of Amerca (CFDA) Scholarshp Competton for the academc year. Accordng to Elzabeth Csordas; drector of the Fashon Desgn/Merchandsng Program, the CFDA s a group of respected fashon desgn specalsts. "[t's] an organzaton whose members are recognzed professonals n the feld, who have been recognzed by ther peers," Csordas sad. -.:_, Ths s the second year, of the CFDA Scholarshp Competton, whch salutes excellence n student creatvty and desgn ablty. t s offered to a select number of nvted unverstylevel schools wth credble fashon programs. Csordas sad the CFDA saw the presentaton of the desgns as the crucal element n ths competton. "Presentaton s what they consdered the most mportant," Csordas sad. As for those students nvolved, Holly Munger sad she s glad to be a part of ths competton. "t really s a great experence, somethng that thnk would be helpful," Munger sad. "t made t an nspraton to do better because t s a competton." Csordas sad the greatest mportance of ths competton, s the recognton t brngs. "t's great that they recognze the [fashon desgn] program, and that they recognze the talent of the students," Csordas sad. The awards are granted to.10 full-tme students n ther junor year, based on mert after presentng a portfolo and a completed applcaton. Last year's amount of each scholarshp was $3,000. The amount of the awards vary each year based on company nvolvement and donatons. Munger sad t does not matter who wns. Takng part n the competton s reward enough. "No matter who wns, the fact that the sx of us got to compete wth other schools s the mportant thng," she sad. Dreyer sad f even one of these students wns an award, the mpact on the Marst desgn program wll be huge. "f one student wns from Marst, t wll be a bg deal for the Fashon Desgn Program," Dreyer sad. Molnar to speak at 51 st commencement by DARVL RCHARD. -. Crcle Correspondant U.S. Rep. Susan Molnar has agreed to gve ths year's commencement address, puttng an unusually early end to the search for a graduaton speaker. Whle most pursuts for a speaker carry on untl early sprng, Molnar, a Republcan congresswoman from New York's 13th Dstrct, accepted the nvtaton late last semester. Tm Masse, Marst's chef college relatons offcer, sad many people have ther eyes on Molnar as she rapdly clmbs to the top of the poltcal ladder. "She's arsng star, both n the Republcan Party and n Congress," Masse sad. "She s part of one of Washngton's power couples," he added, alludng to her marrage to Rep. Bll Paxon (R-NY). Student Government Presdent Pat Mara sad ths year's early decson was largely the result of student collaboraton.: Mara sad the dea of pursung Molnar frst ht hm last August whle he was watchng the Republcan Natonal Conventon. Bob Dole chose Molnar to gve the keynote speech durng the conventon. Whle researchng the possblty of brngng the congresswoman to Marst, Mara dscovered that one senor had a personal connecton. The student's father s edtor of the Staten sland Advance, Molnar's hometown newspaper, and knows Molnar. Mara then proposed the dea to the senor class offcers and Presdent Denns Murray to get ther feedback. Chrs Kadus, senor class presdent, sad he dd not mmedately recognze Molnar Vname, but then realzed who she was after Mara mentoned the Republcan Conventon. "All four [class] offcers lke the dea," Kadus sad. "She's a natonal fgure wth a lot of credbltyrghtnow.". Mara sad one of the frst thngs that grabbed hm about Molnar was he lked the dea of havng a woman speaker. "We haven't had a woman speaker for some tme," Mara sad. Masse sad Molnar s also a good choce because the college has not had a poltcal speaker n many years. Sen. Alfonse D'Amato was one of the last poltcal leaders to send off the senor class, back n the late 1980s. A RSNG STAR Speakng at the Republcan Conventon may have launched Molnar to the forefront of the poltcal arena, but she was far from beng a poltcal unknown before that. Last December, Glamourmagazne named the 38-year-old congresswoman "Woman of the Year," and n 1994,77mecalledher one of the 40 most nfluental people under 40. For the last two years, Molnar has been the hghest-rankng woman n the House leadershp and was reelected to a fourth term last fall wth 61 percent of the vote. Smpson cvl tral reached a verdct Monday concernng puntve damages aganst the former football star, decdng that he must pay $25 mllon to the famles of Ncole Brown Smpson and Ron Goldman, $12.5 mllon each. The jury's decson on puntve damages, whch are ntended to punsh the defendant for malcous wrongdong, came after about fve hours of delberatons. Last Tuesday ths same jury ordered Smpson to pay the Goldman famly $8.5 mllon n compensatory damages. However, ther verdct Monday s far from fnal. "Excessve damages are grounds for appeal and a reversal n many states," CNN legal analyst Roger Cossack told audence members on CNN's TalkBack Lve Monday. "f they came out wth somethng that was clearly out of scope, sometmes the judge wll change t hmself. Or the partes can get together and agree" on a lower payment, he sad. Cvl attorney Howard Prce agreed. "Hstorcally, t's qute common for the tral court, f not the appellate court, to cut down puntve damages because puntve damages qute often are exorbtant, or at lest they're vewed that way by the courts," he sad. f Smpson does seek an appeal he stll wll have to pay a prce. n order to hold off credtors durng the appeal process, the defendant must show the ablty to pay hs blls. Usually, a defendant must put up a bond equal to 150 percent of the jury award. Smpson must have collateral to back up such a bond. Fndng so much collateral could be dffcult, snce he stll owes legal fees from hs cvl, crmnal and chld custody trals, not to menton the $8.5 mllon compensatory damages already leved n me cvl tral. Smpson's lawyers are lkely to argue that the puntve damages are unreasonable. n court, durng the puntve damages phase of the cvl' tral, Smpson attorney Robert Baker sad Smpson s "n effect, wthout assets. Hence, puntve damages are totally napproprate n ths case." The prosecuton argued the opposte. "Mr. Smpson has a lot of money, n the neghborhood of many mllons of dok lars," sad Danel Petrocell, the attorney for the famly of Ron Goldman. The plantffs say Smpson's assets are worth $15.7 mllon. Now, as an author, he has found another way to honor one of the most nfluental fgures n Amercan hstory. Although countless books have been wrtten about the lfe and works of Dr. Martn Luther Kng, Jr., Moses has taken an entrely new approach. Dr. Mar Peter-Raoul, assstant professor of relgous studes who works wth Moses on the Praxs Project, sad Moses does thngs on campus that have a sgnfcant mpact. She also sad Kng was a man who voluntarly lved n' the slums and that Moses' nvolvement n the Green Haven project s what makes Moses and Kng smlar. "t's one thng to phlosophze, but t's another to go out there and lve t," she sad. "He [Moses] works n proxmty to those who suffer deprvaton." Raoul sad she thnks Moses' new book s compellng, passonate and perceptve. "He gets to the many-layered Kng, whch s far more profound than the ' have a dream' Kng," she sad. Last year, McDowell dd some ndependent study work wth Leo MacKenze, who had a connecton to an executve at the nternatonal Rado and Televson Socety (RTS). McDowell and MacKenze nvted the executve to a lunch at Marst, where they mentoned they beleved RTS should have a web ste. Three months later, McDowell receved clearance to create a page. Over the summer, wth Marca Chrst, professonal lecturer of advertsng, McDowell began the page and an nternshp wth RTS. McDowell's web ste for RTS was named a "Ste of the Day" by Sx Pack To Go, an nternet ste that lsts sx stes t recommends on the World Wde Web. McDowell sad he felt especally proud of hs webste. "The ste was lsted along wth one created by Mcrosoft, who have expertse n ms area," he sad. McDowell nterns for two days a week, one day n Manhattan, and another on campus updatng, gettng research and confrontng problems. As another perk to hs job, not only does McDowell set up speakers for conferences, he also gets to attend the conferences and make valuable connectons n the televson and rado busness, even though hs nternshp s not drectly related to ths feld. "My experence s an excepton to the rule, though. Very few nternshps wll allow you to meet the range of people RTS allows, or work on such a level." Students have to seek out these opportuntes," she sad. n 1995, CAUSE, the assocaton for managng and usng nformaton resources n hgher educaton, ranked Marst ted for second as the most technologcally advanced college n the naton. "t's wonderful to clam we are one of the most technologcally advanced colleges, but we also need a product to show for t," he sad. "When students lke Mke acheve somethng lke ths, the college's reputaton s enhanced by provng that we can attract ntellgent and talented students, and the student also benefts by learnng a craft that s then marketable when t comes tme to fnd a job." McMullen sad she agrees wth ths statement. "We are n the busness of educaton, and our customers are our students. f they are not beneftng from our accolades, we are not dong our job," she sad. All have to say s, many of you mssed an ncredble show for the low prce of $15. am an avd Bosstones fan, and coughed up the money and got a show worth three tmes more. Unlke last year at ths tme, the The men topped off a great season by wnnng the Metropol buzz down at McCann s not about the men's basketball team. Ths tan Assocaton Athletc Conference champonshp. The women, year, everyone s nterested wth the men's and women's swmmng and who also had a great season, fell dvng (earns. short of the ttle by a measly oneand-a-half ponts. There s nothng new ths year n terms of wnnng. The teams are stll "At me end-of-the-year banquet ddn't want de female ath swmmng and dvng well and stll wnnng but there s a new twst to letes to feel bad, or the men athletes to feel too good," Head the scenaro. The men's team s lookng to wn the Metro Atlantc Athletc Conference champonshp agan told everybody that f the Coach Larry VanWagner sad. Wth Marst hostng the MAAC champonshps, startng today and concludng Sunday, much attenton has been brought to the swmmng and dvng teams. The questons to ask are: 1) Can the men handle the attenton and pressure of the exctement at ther home and.2) Can the women step up to the level to actually capture the ttle ths year. f the men wn agan ths year, they wll be only the second team..at Marst n any sport to capture three consecutve conference ttles. (Only basketball can boast the "same feat. They wll have at least a few more years to worry about dong that agan!) f the women wn, they wll redeem themselves after losng to Loyola by 1.5 ponts last year at the MAACs. The team has a lot on the lne ths year at the MAAC champonshps. Snce the meet s beng held at Marst, t means so much more. The Red Foxes can feel comfortable n ther normal surroundngs whle at the same tme feelng the pressure to wn on ther home turf. Besdes the swmmers and dvers knowng the pool, the lghtng, the temperature of the water and the ar, and the dvng boards, the fact that they wll have ther home fans wll gve them a great advantage. Even though the regulars wll be there, the Red Foxes wll get support from the student body. am confdent that the Marst students wll show support manly because t s the champonshp. From what have seen n terms of preparng the faclty n the past few weeks, the overall operaton of the meet locks to be a success. Although we have one of the best facltes n the MAAC due to a separate dvng well, stll have one queston; Where are all the people gong to go? There wll be over 300 people on the pool deck at any one tme and f you haven't notced, there's not much room. Also, there s a very lmted bleacher and spectator area so f you want good seats, get there early and settle n for the day. St. Francs arrved n Poughkeepse for Saturday's game standng n the mddle of the NEC pack, fghtng for poston n the upcomng conference tournament. Marst, meanwhle, was comng off a wn, but head coach Dave Magarty's squad was stll strugglng to stay out of last place n the league standngs. The game began slowly; after eght full mnutes of play, the score was ted at 3, ard even after the teams pcked up de pace, the half-tme score saw Marst leadng, The low scores were due to both nepttude on offense, and sold defense. The Red Flash and the Red Foxes both shot less dan 33% from the floor n the frst half, and both teams commtted careless, costly turnovers. The MAAC champonshps wll be held n the Red Foxes back yard, more commonly known as the James J. McCann Recreaton Center. Today marks the frst of. four days of ntense competton. Sophomore Lsa Magll sad the practces have been gettng less strenuous for the swmmers. "We've been taperng down our practcng n terms of yardage so we can be properly rested," Magll sad. However, sophomore Melane Addngton sad the practcng for the dvers has pretty much remaned the same. "The dvers have fve dfferent dves that we have to execute n competton," she sad. "So we work on the ones that we are weak on." Magll sad the team's mood durng these practces have been a lttle mxed. "Generally the team has been gettng psyched up, but some of the freshman have been a lttle nervous," she sad. Addngton added that the team's mood has been alttle anxous, but defntely not negatve.
