1 = h STATE UNVERSTY OF NEW YORK AT STONY BROOK Volume 35, Number 55 Founded 1957 Monday, May 4,,1992 STU DENTS:X New _ NOF anrks ^L 10 ^1e AL L 9<^ Sknner demonstrates how to change combnaton of new dorm locks By Manny Brea Specal to Statesman wo students are challengng the effectveness of combnaton locks the unversty plans to nstall n all dorms by October, callng them "nherently nsecure" and dstrbutng nformaton about the locks' weaknesses to resdents. The Smplex combnaton locks are used n rvng and O'Nell colleges and on the sute doors of all buldngsn Kelly Quad: Te Dwvson of Campus Resdences recently fnshed nstallng Smplex locks n Kelly Quad and nstalled the locks n some rooms n Wagner College n Roosevelt Quad after 40 rooms were burglarzed over sprng break, dvson offcals sad. Scott Sknner and Ed DeFelpps, two Stony Brook resdents and former Stony Brook Press wrters who had researched the safety of the locks, held a workshop n G Quad on Aprl 21, n whch they condemned the locks as beng falsely advertsed as secure by Smplex and the Dvson of Campus Resdences. They also taught resdents how to change ther combnatons and dstrbuted a packet wth nformaton and keys that enable resdents to change ther own codes. Sknner sad the combnatons are fnte and can be determned by a burglar wthn 20 mnutes. Sknner last semester publshed the results of an nvestgaton on the locks n the magazne, Hacker Quarterly. But Dallas Bauman, assstant vce presdent for campus resdences, dened the students' allegaton. " would dsagree," sad Bauman. " thnk t's a sgnfcant mprovement over what we have." The dvson currently uses Smplex locks as the only lock source n rvng and O'Nell Colleges, accordng to Sknner, an rvng resdent. "Our plan s to mantan both the Best [keyoperated locks] and Smplex locks," Bauman sad. He added that any buldng that currently does not have Best cores wll receve them as soon as possble. However, accordng to Sknner, the Department of Defense securty manual states that"smplex lock may not be used as the only lock source except durng workng hours." Both Bauman and Scott Law, assstant vce presdent for safety and securty for the dvson, told Statesman they had no pror knowledge of the passage n the Defense Department manual. Sknner sad he was "provdng people wth the nformaton on how to change ther combnaton so that everyone could protect themselves." But Ann Mare Brunke, a resdent assstant n rvng College, sad Sknner was not offerng resdents more protecton because "by advertsng the fact that the locks mght be unsafe, he has let out nformaton that wll lead to more robberes n the halls that would not have occurred otherwse." 3 Student chased, stabbed after part By Patrca Huang stelcansuff Wst A Hand College resdent was stabbed easly Frday mornng n front of hs buldng after beng chased by gang members. The vctm was treated for wounds to the left sde of hs face and body, sad Publc Safety spokesman Doug Lttle. The student, who receved 25 sttches and was admtted to Unversty Hosptal wth a concusson, was kept overnght for observaton and released Saturday aftern, sad Suzanne Konopka, a hosptal admttng clerk. Publc Safety would not gve detals or speculate about the attackers, but several Hand College resdents sad the student was chased from an Asan Students Allance party n the Student Unon blevel and was assaulted by members of an Asan gang called the Green Dragons. The attack s the thrd on campus ths year allegedly nvolvng members of the Asan gang. All three ncdents occured after Asan Students Allance partes. The suspects fled the scene before Publc Safety offcers arrved, Lttle sad. The frstdegree assault s a felony, he added. "He was lyng on hs sde and there was a lot ofblood," sad Davd Yaseen, a Hand resdent who got word of the stabbng when students came to hs sute room lookng a resdent emergency medcal techncan who eventually asssted the student Thee was a lot of confuson," sad a Hand College resdent who wshed to reman anonymous. (Dad Joachm contrbuted to ths story.) 3 Commuter electon canceled By Jason Ddner Satcnan sscate News Edtor Lack of plannng and commuter partcpaton forced Commuter College to cancel ts electon for fall postons last week, college offcals sad. The cancellaton of the electons, whch were scheduled for last Tuesday through Thursday, was due to a shortage of poll watchers and advertsng, accordng to Clyde Cook, charman of the commuter electon board. "Mhe reason there were no electons s that we had no poll watchers; there was nobody to help me...," Cook sad. " was the electon board." Because the electons whch would have flled the postons of presdent, vce presdent, secretary, and treasurer, startng n the summer were cancelled, the councl has decded to temporarly fll the postons wth actng offcers for the summer, accordng to Commuter College Presdent Wllam Bouler. "We fgured so far t would be best to appont some people untl the very begnnng of next semester when we can have a proper electon," he sad. But Cook told Statesman he had recommended that Commuter College hold an electon n ths Wednesday's commuter legslature meetng, rather than temporarly appont offcers. "Mey wanted to do appontments and thought t would be unfar to people who went through [campagnng] to hold postons," he sad. " would actually take offense to them not abdng by my recommendaton." Bouler sad he wll present fve appontees at an emergency legslature meetng today. The councl has apponted former Polty presdental canddate Rchard Cole, also currently assstant vce presdent of Commuter College, for the actng presdental poston, accordng to Cook. The councl's choce for vce presdent, Cook sad, s Commuter Senator Eugene Goon. But none of the councl's choces match the canddates on the ballots for those postons. Canddates are runnng unopposed for three out of the four postons, ncludng presdent, on the ballot The only offce n whch there s competton s vce presdent, for whch Vnny Bruzzese and Steven Alama were runnng. "The appontment] was unfar to Steve, mran [Syed, presdental canddate], and Vnny, who had put n the pettons....o"sad Cook.!They wentthrough the process," Bouler sad he chose a mx of nonaddates and canddates to mprove the farness of an electon n the fall. "What we're concerned about s that we wll have an electon ths fall, a real complete electon," he sad "We chose someone that had no ntentons of runnng to head t [the temporary councl]. We chose three people that had no ntenton of runnng and two people that dd." But Cook blasted the councl for ts decson. "They just don't want mran and Vnny n charge of Commuter College," he sad. " guess you can see the thng wth Vnny, whch knd of put a bad blemsh on Commuter College, but mran never dd anythng down there." The Polty Senate voted to mpeach Senator Bruzzese last month after he was charged wth msuse of Polty funds as charman of the Programs and Servces Councl. He stll votes n the senate, but ajudcal board hearng ths week wll determne hs future n Polty, accordng to nancy Belson, charwoman of the judcal board. Cole blamed Cook for the electon's cancellaton. "t was all Clyde's fault," he sad. "He ddn't do Jack squat." "When you pont your fnger at somebody, there's three more pontng back at you," Cook sad. "Rch s more to blame than am, because Commuter [College] should have offered n the LEG meetng that, 'We'll gve you X amount of dollars to watch the polls on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.'... t was Commuter College's fault that we ddn't have an electon. They promsed they'd help." Bruzzesesad thatheandsyedcomplanedtostressor Altems, Polty's executve drector, about the appontments. He blamed the cancelled electon on the councl. "Cook... smply dd not have any help," Bruzzese sad. He accused Bouler of sayng, " really don't care what happens or what Clyde does. 'm graduatng anyway." The fundng was avalable to hre poll watchers, Bouler sad, but nobody motoned n legslature to allocate the fundng. But Cook sad, "twas my understandng that there was no fundng." " requested poll watchers," Cook sad. "And t came up that there was no fundng avalable. "One of them at least should have come to me and sad, 'f you need t, 'll be a pollwatcher,'" Cook sad. " would have watched the poll for one day." Bouler sad the electon was nadequately prepared because the reformed Commuter electon bylaws stpulated by Polty's executve councl after t nullfed an electon for commuter senators n February restrcted executve oversght on the electon process. 4 4 Project has resdents cleanng the campu ls By Adrane Moser n Copy Eo Neary 200 rsent nsvoluned to clean up the area around ther dons last Frday at the Quad Cleanup Day. Ths organzed pckup of garbage has taken place for several years, but ths year t became the responsblty of the newlyformed Earth Acton Board of the Resdence Hall Assocaton, a student group. As opposed to the admnstratonrun Prde Patrol n whch staff members partcpated n beautfcaton projects around the academc buldngs, the Quad Cleanup Day s "purely for the quads," sad Steven Spegel, charman of the EAB. Orgnally, the EAB wanted to work wth the Prde Patrol, sad Spegel, but Ann Forkn of Specal Programs, who organzes the Prde Patrol, sad the event was meant for staff, not students. She sad she was not wllng to nvolve them, Spegel told Statesman. Partcpatng n the EAB cleanup, Andy Lesng, an EAB member, flled garbage bags wth cgarette butts he pcked up around the Roth Quad pond. He hoped the cleanup would have a postve effect on the campus communty. "f people see us out here cleanng, they mght thnk dfferently about throwng ther ng cgarette butts on the ground." Roth Quad resdent Greg Doyle sad he felt a change n atttude towards the envronment s necessary, not just a onetme cleanup. "Collectng s just gong to make room for more garbage to collect," he sad. The EAB orgnally planned to have a smlar cleanup day every semester, but decded on an annual event that would receve more publcty. nstead of spendng large amounts of money on ncentves for a good cause, they ntend to put more towards projects that affect the envronmentmore drectly, lke educatonal events, recyclng bns, and lghtswtch stckers, Spegel sad. Tabler Quad Resdents Barbara Delbrune and Jl Schuchardt swept aash away outsde Hand College. Delbrune sad students' cleanng up s a postve acton towards a clean campus. "We're dong t for free, so the school doesn't have to complan about dshng out money for ths," she sad. "'m tred of people crtczng how drty ths campus s and they're not dong anythng about t." Rachel Moore, RHD of Mount Colege and staff advsor for EAB, sad snce students caused the trash to accumulate n the frstplace, they should be nvolved nclearng t away. Fundng for ths event came from FSA, from therresdencehall programmngfund generated by the laundry machnes n resdence halls. Expenses for ths event were lmted to cleanng equpment and tshrts. RHA pad forthe mnmal advertsng costs. The event was publczed through varous campus meda sources. Spegel sad, campus phonemal message dstrbuted to student leaders and others randomly was such a success that some were forwarded ther lmt of sx tmes. A recepton n the evenng was attended by more that 70 students who had cleaned up earler n the day. They feasted on 20 pzzas and sda donated by Domno's. Jeff Smth of Gray College ad G Quad cleanup crew pcks up over 70 bags of trash last Frday mtted that the promse of free pzza was what really got hm to work, but once he became nvolved rakng leaves and saw what a mess the area was, he really got nto t. "f you have them more often, t would stay a lot cleaner," he sad. Ths event was also ntended to promote Stony Brook prde. "We're not only lookng to clean the envronment, but we're also lookng to brng the campus communty together by partcpatng n a common cause," sad Spegel. Moore called the Cleanup Day an effort to get students nvolved, to "take ownershp n the pace where they lve." At the recepton, Felca Malkel of Ammann College reflected on her day. "t was really great to be wth other people who are really enthusastc about the place they lve n. t wll get drty really fast, 'm sure, because people don't care." "You put some n, but we should get a lot more out wth the campus cleaned up," Spegel sad, "... My hope s that f t gets clean, people wll take prde n t... When they see a clean campus, they wll be less lkely to ltter." The Ronkn Educatonal Group Has Fled For Bankruptcy. The SEC has charged them wth fraud, and halted tradng of ther stock. 5 Students LOCKS from page 1 Law sad Sknner had the rght to gve hs semnar, but he sad he ddn't see the purpose t served. "He [Sknner] was wastng hs tme," sad Danel Hayes, resdence hall drector of O'Nell College. "He could have done more constructve thngs wth hs energy." Sknner provded the audence wth an Allen wrench as pan of a packet that also ncluded an artcle he wrote "SmplexLocks and lluson of Securty" for the Hacker Quarterly magazne last fall. The artcle showed how to change a combnaton, and a lesson on a mnature door model that was locked by a Smplex wrench. The packet provded more than just nformaton on changng combnatons. t showed that 1,081 possble combnatons exsted, all of whch could be tred wthn about 20 mnutes to open the door, Sknner sad. Sknner sad he expects the Student Polty Assocaton to pck up the tab for the $50 he spent on nformaton packets and Allen wrenches But Polty Presdent Dan Slepan sad the student government has not funded Sknner's project, although the executve councl ofpolty has'dscussed fundng. "My understandng s that wll get the money back," Sknner sad. A secton of Sknner's artcle on "hackng locks" showed technques used for narrowng down the possbltes n crackng someone else's code. One technque used a voceactvated personal tape recorder that could be placed at someone's door and would record the clck made when someone was enterng ther room. t could later be used to decpher the code, Sknner sad. 3last locks lqg 7 Another technque for fndng out the range of numbers s to take "a pencl eraser and carefully rub off a tny bt of rubber on each of the pushbuttons," Sknner sad. "When someone comes to enter the combnaton, they wll rub off the rubber on all of the pushbuttons that they use, whle leavng telltale traces of rubber on the pushbuttons that they do not use. reducng the number of possble combnatons." A student complaned that knowledge should not be spread on how to break nto rooms, but Emmanuel Goldsten, edtor of the Hacker Quarterly, sad, "fafewsheets of paper s all t takes to get nto a Smplex lock, then that's somethng people should be aware of." Tamperng wth the lock to the pont of breakage can lead to a "cost of $150 to $200," Hayes sad. Falure to nform the quad of fce or the resdence hall drector24 hours before wll result n a "letter of warnng." Hayes emphaszed the need for the publc to know that ths [workshop] was "not funded by [Campus Resdences] nor was [Campus Resdences] n support of L'" Poston Avalable The GSO s lookng for an edtor for ts two major publcatons, the GSO Survwal Gude and the GSO News and Blues. Applcants for one or both postons should hand delver ther resumes and salary requrements to the GSO (attenton da Fuchs) by June 1st. Graduate Student applcatons wll be gven prorty. Both postons requre strong wrtng abltes and knowledge of a desktop publshng package such as PageMaker. ndvdual must be able to work ndependently and have experence n Journalsm. 7 Hotlne offers advce, support to cancer vctrns By Gabrelle Horwtz Sawtenn Suff Wrte he Unversty Hosptal at Stony Brook recently opened a cancer hotlne at the hosptal's cancer center, unversty offcals announced. The hotlne enables cancer experts to gve advce to people who have questons about the causes and treatments of cancer, hotlne offcals sad. The lne also helps callers patents and ther famly members deal wth the psychologcal effects of cancer, accordng to secretary Gal Urban of the hosptal's nursng admnstraton, an operator for the hotlne. MThe hotlne was set up as a mechansm to gve nformaton to people and refer general nformaton about cancer," sad Dr. Mchael Vola, a cancer specalst who heads the servce. Callers range from cancer patents to famly members and people just curous about the symptoms of cancer, he sad. Because many forms of cancer exst, a hotlne was needed to gve people "a coordnated approach to recevng questons land answerng them]," he sad. "People who are dagnosed don't know what to do and a decson s based on what s easest for the patent," Vola sad. The phone calls go through several steps when they are receved by the hotlne. Dependng on the nature of the questons, they are ether felded by a Stony Brook cancer expert, who s not a doctor, or referred elsewhere. f the expert cannot answer the questons, the callers are referred to a doctor. The doctor wll return the phone call as soon as possble, the next day at the latest, sad hosptal spokeswoman Wendy Alpne. f a doctor's help s not avalable, then the caller s referred to the Amercan Cancer Socety, Vola sad. "We want to get the patents to the rght people and take them out of the hands of quacks," sad Vola. "We gve them a reasonable judgement on what they want" Havng a cancer hotlne has made people aware that a cancer center exsts at the hosptal, sad Vola. He sad most of the people who call are from Long sland. "The hotlne s nundated wth phone calls," accord Student Leader News Srevce NEW PALTZ Arson or a possble fre bombng s beng blamed for a fre that serously damaged the college presdents' guest house on the SUNY New Paltz campus early Frday mornng. There were also unoffcal reports of as many as 12 garbage can fres on campus wthn mnutes of the guest house blaze ncludng a fre n the dumpster outsde DuBos Resdence Hall. The guest house was normally used as a resdence for guests of the college and as a publc meetfg place. But after cancercausng PCBs were dscovered n the Coykendall ScencesBuldng lt Decemberthe chemstry and bology departments were relocated to the guest house. The guest house fre was frst reported to campus polce by an anonymous male at 4:42 am, accordng to college spokeswoman Karen Summerln. Campus offcers, who are the frst responders to all oncampus fres, confrmed a fre n the structure, and the frst fre alarm was sounded by the New Paltz dspatcher at 4:45 am, Summerln sad. Frefghters arrved wthn fve mnutes and the blaze was reported under control at 5:06 am. A total of three ng to Vola. He sad many of these people call askng what they should do f they have cancer. Frequently, people want to know f support groups are avalable to help them deal wth the mental effects of cancer, he sad. Nnety percentof the questons deal wth formsof therapy that are avalable, he sad. A frequent problem the hotlne encounters s ndvduals callng about alternatve forms of therapy. Vola sad none of the alternatve forms of therapy avalable are effectve. He cted the sale of vtamns as one such form of alternatve therapy. Other alternatve cancer therapes, accordng to some experts, nvolve holstc, or sprtual treatment "All forms of alternatve therapy are worthless," Vola sad. "Many forms of alternatve therapy are not scentfc... Nne out of ten refuse to have [ther therapy] tested." The hotlne asks people what they have read about new forms of therapy and they respond to ther nqury realstcally, sad Vola. He sad callers often ask the center "to clarfy what they have read." "We drect them to The Amercan Cancer Socety whch deals wth the specfcs of alternatve forms of therapy," Vola sad. The hotlne s staffed from 8:30 am to 5 pm weekdays, accordng to Alpne. After 5 pm, callers may leave a message on a recordng. The number s (516) Arson cted n New Paltz blaze alarms were sounded. One fre fghter sad flames travelled to the second floor through the outsde of the buldng, escapng from the burnng structure through a frst floor wndow. The extent of the damage has not yet been estmated by the college, though extensve damage was reportedly done to records and fles of both the chemstry and bology departments. n addton to fre damage, there s also smoke and water damage throughout the twostory, allwood structure, accordng to fre department sources. "The cause of the fre has been determned to be ncendary n nature by the nvestgators," fre chef Ronald Fngan sad. Accordng to Fngan, a dog wth the ablty to snff out flammable chemcals was used to fnd the cause of the fre by the Ulster County Arson Unt A campus polce offcer told a student reporter Frday afternoon that the buldng had been fre bombed. Despte wdespread speculaton by students and resdents that the fres were related to the racerelated volence n Los Angeles and elsewhere, nether college nor fre department offcals would connect the ncdents to outrage over the Rodney Kng polce brutalty verdct. No one clamed responsblty for the fre, campus offcals sad. 7 he l CAMPUS NOTCES SUMMER COURSE BULLETNS NOW AVALABLE n the followng offces: Records/Regstrar, Center for Academc Advsng, New Student Programs, and Summer Sesson. 8 8 Edtoral Campus Should Protest Kng Verdct Stony Brook student organzatons have faled to respond to the terrble njustce done to Rodney Kng n Los Angeles. Whle we are fortunate that the unversty and the metropoltan area dd not fare up n the knd of volence that engulfed Los Angeles. Rochester and New Rochelle, t s frghtenng that students of Stony Brook have taken no steps to condemn a case of polce brutalty that seems to have slpped through the hands of the justce system. Ths s a unversty, a place where people should feel free to vent ther concerns, ther grpes, or whatever s on ther mnds. Th.e StonyBrookconunty has spoken out n the past on a great many ssues: the Persan GulfWar. anmal rghts, abortonrghts, and has most recently debated sometmes heatedly the speech of Khalld Muhammad and the fundng of Poltysponsored groups. Televson news ntervews have shown that members of varous socoethnc backgrounds express shock and outrage at the travesty of justce that has led to so much volence. Students need to talk about ths past week's events, even f they all agree. The more students rallyfor a common cause, the louder and more credble ther cres wll be. But scholastc achevement s not the only crtera for membershp. "For over 200 years," accordng to the socety's Handbook for New Members, "electon to Ph Beta Kappa has been a recognton of ntellectual capactes.well. employed, especally n the acqurng of an educaton n the lberal arts and scences. The objectves of humane leang encouraged by Ph Beta Kappa nclude ntellectual honesty and tolerance, range of ntellectual nterests, and understandng not merely knowledge." At Stony Brook, sad Staley, the core currculum ensures that students are educated n a broad feld of subjects. Founded on December 5, 1776, at the College of Wllam and Mary n Wllamsburg, Vrgna, Ph Beta Kappa was the frst socety to have a Greek letter name. ts name was derved from the frst letters of the phrase "phlosopha bour kybernetes" or "Phlosophy s the Gude of Lfe." The organzaton orgnally had an oath See ANMALS on page 12 of secrecy, a badge, a code of laws, an elaborate form of ntaton, a seal, and even a specal handclasp. Wthn 54 years, chapters or "alphas" were founded at other unverstes. Today, 240 chapters exst n nsttutons of hgher learnng throughout the Unted States. Orgnally founded as adebatng or lterary club, Ph Beta Kappa gradually evolved nto an honor socety. The admsson of women was another development that marked the progress of the socety. n 1875, two women who had met the scholastc requrement were admtted to the alpha at the Unversty of Vern ont' "A few years later, when a general consttuton and bylaws were adopted, the rght of women to membershp was accepted wthout queston." reads the Handbook. The late Jane Addams, Pearl Buck and Helen Keller are just a few of the socety's promnent women members. Eventually, Ph Beta Kappa began to recognze three classes of members: members n course, alumn members and honorary members. As a freshman she was unable to fnsh a onemle run." Stewart's endurance was a problem n the past but now that she s a part of the 4x400 relay team, her tranng methods have helped her mprove. " would lke to see her work towards runnng the 400 meters as an ndvdual," Borbet sad. "t could be her best event because she s more than capable of runnng a sub 60 seconds."' Stewart beleves that ths transton wll not be that dffcult because she knows Borbet wll be there every step of the way. "'Coach s a great motvator," Stewart sad.
