Shepherd s a senor musc educaton major from Roswell, Georga. Other fnalsts were: frst runner up, Rose Mare John; second runner up, Donna Beach; thrd runner up, Kathy Steedley; and fourth runner up, Charlotte Parsh. SGA electons today By DEE MARET News Wrter Only seven GSC students have appled for the fve avalable postons n today's SGA electons. The fve postons are presdent, executve vce presdent, vce presdent of auxlary affars, vce presdent of fnance and vce presdent of academc affars. A canddate for the offce of presdent s Rchard Lane. Lane s a sophomore accountng major from Stone Mountan. He sees a lack of student nvolvement as the major problem he would tackle. He wants to publcze the varous commttees n whch students could partcpate. A member of P Kappa Ph, the student senate, Auxlary Servce and CLEC Lane beleves he can succeed n brngng the SGA to the students. "The current SGA s too solated," he sad. J. Snypp, a junor general busness major from Atlanta, s also runnng for presdent. "I see room for mprovement," he sad. Snypp would open the senate meetngs, and attempt to secure students a vote n the Faculty Senate. "Students need to be made aware of what the SGA does. I don't thnk they know the proper channels for when they have a problem. They should go through the SGA," he sad. Snypp has also desgned a physcal educaton CLEP test that he would present to Dean Nolan f elected. Vyng for the poston of executve vce presdent are Tm Somers and Gary Jefferson. Jefferson s an ndustral engneerng major from Dubln. He s a junor who s a member of Kappa Alpha Ps, Chrstan Bble Study and the Afro Amercan Club. The hopeful executve vce presdent feels there should be more unty between the black and whte students on campus. "I beleve we have a lot to offer each other and we should help each other," he sad. Jefferson also supports a "good enrchment program." He thnks there should be more muscans, poets and playwrghts on campus. Jefferson also beleves there should be changes made n the Englsh and math program. He favors an opton plan to change Englsh 151 to a two quarter or one quarter class and thnks math should be more busness orented. "Ths would gve students a broader emphass n math," he sad. Somers s a hstory major at GSC and a member of Alpha Tau Omega. See SGA, p. 3 Thompsons fle sut for son's electrocuton By CAROL ADAMS News Wrter The parents of Fredde Thompson, who was klled n March 1981 n an apparent electrocuton accdent n McCroan, have fled sut aganst the State Board of Regents. Ralph and Estelle Thompson fled a $500,000 sut n Bulloch County Superor Court on February 22 clamng neglgence n the death of ther son, Ralph Fred Thompson. Thompson was workng on lghtng n the attc of McCroan Audtorum on March 2 for the Mss GSC Pageant when he was electrocuted. The sut clamed neglgence n permttng Thompson to work n a dangerous area and for falng to provde proper warnng, clothng, and equpment. It also charges the Board of Regents wth knowng that the condtons were hazardous and not changng them and clams that the Board of Regents allowed the faclty to deterorate. Rchard Johnson, assocate professor of communcaton arts, sad that many mprovements n McCroan were already n the plannng before the accdent happened. Immedately after the accdent the fre marshall reported 27 thngs out of complance wth safety rules. McCroan Audtorum was closed for repars after the accdent. "There are no unreasonable safety hazards n that buldng anymore," sad Johnson last week. Estelle Thompson sad of the sut, "We felt we had to make a statement of protest. It was a decson made by our whole famly." The Thompsons feel the need for someone to say, "We were at fault," accordng to Estelle Thompson. Don Gaughf, drama nstructor n communcaton arts, sad, "They don't want to sue any ndvdual because they don't feel any ndvdual s to blame." Estelle Thompson agreed, "It's an nsttutonal type thng." She feels t was a part of neglect of the school admnstraton. Presdent Dale lck declned to comment snce there s a lawsut pendng. Student grades sent to Landrum By JULIE HOLLAND News Wrter Grades at GSC wll be dstrbuted through Landrum boxes startng wnter quarter, 1983, accordng to Scott MacLachlan, assocate regstrar. End-of-the-quarter grades wll no longer be sent to a student's home address. The major reason for the change s a cut n budget. MacLachlan sad that by sendng grades through Landrum's mal center at the end of each quarter, GSC wll save a mnmum of $1,000. Ten days after a new quarter starts, grades that are stll sttng n Landrum boxes wll be forwarded to the students's home address. Also, students who wsh to learn ther grades may stop by the regstrar's offce to pck them up. MacLachlan sad that there are about 600 to 700 who wll have trouble. He feels that the hardshp wll fall on those students who are not comng back to school the followng quarter. Ths group ncludes dsmssal students who have been suspended or excluded and the few undergraduates who do not have Landrum boxes. Another group of students whose grades wll not go to Landrum are the graduatng students and the few undergraduates takng courses at dfferent locatons, such as Redsvlle and Brunswck. MacLachlan sad these grades wll be sent to the home address of the student. All grades after sprng and summer quarters wll be sent to the home address. Fall and wnter quarter grades wll go to Landrum. MacLachlan stated that anythng they can do to save money wll be done. At the end of ths quarter, fnal grades wll go out March 21 and be n Landrum boxes on March 22.

Dale lck was struck.wth mlk and one of. hs guests had a $175 jacket runed as a result of beng ht wth hot sauce, n a food fght on February 11, accordng to Faye Anderson, assstant manager of Landrum. "Dr. Lck was very mpressve. He was composed and dgnfed and dd not hurry to leave," Anderson sad. She sad the students who threw the food ran out of the cafetera yellng obscentes. No one was dentfed, however Anderson sad some students returned and apologzed for the behavor of ther fellow students. The food fghts often occur on Frdays after local happy hours. "I thnk food servces has not made defnte rules as to what sort of punshment students (food throwers) wll receve," Anderson sad. She also sad that rules should be establshed as well as understood by students. "Food throwng s a problem that has never really been under control," sad Smmons. He sad that t s dffcult to have acceptable meals when students wll not cooperate. Smmons also sad that the food servce department was consderng closng Landrum one or two hours earler on weekends n attempt to control food throwng problems. Bll May, food servce drector, s appalled that college students actually throw food. He sad, "...t's a shame that a few students have to cause a problem the affects all the students." Students to attend Natonal Model U.N. By JAMES MARLOW News Wrter Although most people would not consder Statesboro the center of world events or even a place that s remotely connected wth nternatonal poltcs, the GSC poltcal scence department and the poltcal scence club are sponsorng ther 10th consecutve delegaton to the Natonal Model Unted Natons n New York. Ths year's delegaton wll be representng the Democratc and Popular Republc of Algera. Accordng to Hashm, the advser to the delegaton, "I personally beleve that t s an exctng alternatve to the tradtonal system of educaton. By partcpatng n ths program, students learn the strengths and weaknesses of the Unted Natons, and somethng of the complexty of nternatonal problems." Hashm went on to say that, "It s a great learnng experence." The 15 member group was selected from a group of 30 applcants on the bass of academc performance, knowledge of nternatonal affars, and communcaton sklls. The delegates make up a very dverse group whose areas of study range from language, to busness, to poltcal scence. The Model U.N. s actually a class called Poltcal Scence 490. It s taught by Van Tassell and Hashm. Students n the course have been workng both fall and wnter quarter, and they wll receve fve credt hours for ther partcpaton. Unlke a normal classroom, many of the sessons are conducted just as f each member was a representatve of the Securty Councl at the Unted Natons. The topcs of debate vary from the mplementaton of a nuclear freeze to the conflct of occuped terrtores n the Mddle East. The group has been nvolved n a number of actvtes to rase funds for the trp to New York ths sprng. Another project the group sponsored was the Mn-Model Unted Natons for 300 area hgh school students. Gar Perkns, the head delegate for ths year's group sad, "It s more than learnng about the Unted Natons; t brngs an nternatonal awareness to students, as well as teachng students how to work together to accomplsh ther goals." Newsbrefs Another hoax And yet another phone hoax: No, kds, Johnny Carson dd not dstrbute hs telephone credt card number n December, for use by hs vewers. In the second major telephone hoax snce September, Iowa college students fell for the old lawsut settlement gag. Allegedly, Carson revealed hs credt card number durng the "Tonght" show after the Natonal Enqurer was ordered to pay hs phone bll for a month, n settlement of a lbel sut. Those who made calls usng the phony credt card number wll be traced and blled, say phone company offcals. Old test stolen An exam thef at the Unversty of North Carolna was foled by hs own foolshness. The thef apparently stole portons of a Natonal Board of Medcal Examners test from a locked flng cabnet n a UNC medcal school offce. But the materal was from a retred edton of the test, say school offcals. UNC, lke other schools, purchases retred test edtons to help prepare students. Medcal school offcals say they've now upgraded ther test storage securty. Youth Art Festval held at Sweetheart Crcle A collage of art actvtes, a medley of performances and a varety show of theatrcs by people and puppets for young people wll turn GSC Sweetheart Crcle nto an outdoor merry-go-round of creatvty durng the Youth Art Festval Saturday, March 12. The festval runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festval s open to everybody, accordng to coordnator and college art department head Rchard Tchch, but chldren and youth have a specal nvtaton to try ther hand at any of some 25 dfferent art demonstratons, jon the band of jazz muscans for a number, or take part n any of many "get nvolved" actvtes on the program. The out-of-town guest performers takng center stage on the crcle throughout the day wll nclude jazz composer and muscan Ben Tucker, the Great Amercan Mme Experment (GAME), and folk potter Cleater Meades, wth hometown appearances by the GSC Puppet Theater and Masquers Theater Company, a local square dance club, and choral and band groups from several Bulloch County schools. Among the most "actve actvtes wll be games drected by GSC recreaton students, whle GSC art students wll work wth young people on short projects from shapng clay "pnch pots" to rollar prntng, to creatng paper bag puppets. Youngsters from 10 county schools have already been busy at ther projects, desgnng and colorng posters to promote the art festval around town. "Everythng at the festval wll be free," sad Tchch. The festval s antcpated to become an annual event at the college durng Youth Art Month, Tchch sad. Ths year's program was developed through a faculty grant to GSC art faculty member Joseph Olsen as part of hs "Art for Chldren and Youth" currculum. Tchch expects ths openng festval to draw several hundred people, ncludng artsts, performers and observers. "P Sg feels that students have not lost any sprt and enthusasm for GSC and are stll proud to be a part of the largest senor college n Georga," sad Dana Brmacombe who chars the "I Love GSC" days commttee. Jordan decded to run because she wanted to be nvolved wth the college. She beleves she can work well wth the other offcers and wll attempt to allocate the SGA's funds properly and on a prorty bass. For presdent we feel that J. Snypp s the best choce. Snypp supports a more open SGA that gets students nvolved. Also, he hopes to brng about a PE CLEP test that we feel would greatly beneft the student body. For the executve vce presdent, we endorse Tm Somers. He, too, beleves n a more open SGA whle hopng to help solve any problems whch may arse as a result of ncreased enrollment. For vce presdent of auxlary affars we support Mke Wallace. He shows a sncere nterest n people and hopes to mprove on campus housng. Dense Jordan s our choce for vce presdent of fnance. She has been nvolved n several treasury postons and has proven she can handle fnancal affars. Susan Saunders s our pck for vce presdent of academc affars. She has shown an nterest n GSC and feels that academcs are top prorty. No matter who you support, The George-Anne urges all students to get out and vote. Muscans turned off At the begnnng of wnter quarter, muscans at Oxford were greeted wth a somewhat unpleasant surprse. Wthout ther knowledge, Hall Councl had enacted a new rule makng the use of all electrcal nstruments and drums llegal. But where was justce? How could they say a gutar wth a 50-watt amp s too loud and dsturbs others when there are stereos whch put out three tmes as much power? Just ask the purple-hared Dead Kennedys freak how many watts hs stereo puts out. The number s astronomcal. Leaders at Oxford should make some compromse wth muscans, allowng them two to three hours a day to practce and sharpen ther creatve talents. Lvng n Oxford slums s bad enough; muscans gve lfe to an otherwse drab place. P Sg holdng GSC day Unversty status may have slpped through our fngers recently, but there s no reason why we should gve up all hope. Attanng such a status could brng a lot to GSC. Workng to get there s the hard part, and just because we ddn't get unversty status the frst tme around doesn't mean we are gong to gve up. Tomorrow, for the frst tme ever, P Sg s holdng an "I LoVe GSC" rally at the Flame on Chandler Road. They wll be gvng away food and drnks, and they are plannng on havng speakers to help get the students motvated. Asde from the rally, P Sg wll be presentng Dale Lck wth a tree to plant on campus to sgnfy the "growng wth GSC" years hopefully ahead. George Allen The party's fnally over Somebody asked me the other day what ths edtoral would be about. I guess t really wouldn't matter except ths s my last one. My last edtoral! What a terrble thought. I don't know what ths s gong to be about. I thnk I'm just gong to ramble. I'm tred of wrtng about serous ssues lke aborton, captal punshment, or murder. I thnk I'm just gong to relax and let my mnd wander. Who knows, ths may be my best edtoral ever. Let's see, what about GSC. That's a good subject. What a great school! Some people really make me mad when they cut down the school. Sure, t's okay to talk about the food n Landrum or how you hate exams, but some fools are really bellgerent sometmes. How come? If you don't lke' t, get out. Leave, we don't need or want you here f you're not happy. Some of us really take a lot of prde n our school. Personally, I love GSC and I really hate leavng. How about our new football team? Aren't they great! Isn't t great to have our very own football team? What's even neater s to have a great coach lke Erk Russell. The man s a legend. He smply knows football. I can remember when I frst met and ntervewed Erk. I was awestruck. I couldn't beleve I was talkng to Erk Russell. He's gonna wn wth GSC, I guarantee you that. Contnued success for the future Erk! How about our basketball team? Frank Kerns has really done an ncredble job there, I thnk. He took one of the worst programs n the naton and has bult t nto a recognzed power. Heck, we almost beat Georga and Alabama State. And we dd beat South Carolna! Nowhere but forward for Frank Kerns. Keep t up Frank! I sad t last year and I'll say t agan, Frank s one of the best basketball coaches I've ever seen! Now I'm rollng, and I haven't even begun to say anythng. Can Georga wn wthout Herschel Walker? Yes, I say they can. I also say they'll repeat as SEC champons. It won't be easy, but they wll. The USFL? Well, I don't really care about them. I hope every college n the naton bans them from ther campus for what they dd. They broke ther own rule when they recruted Herschel. But, who cares anyway? I'm not gonna watch football n the sprng, not whle the Braves are on. So there USFL! What about The George-Anne? Interestng subject, don't you agree. Hopefully someday everyone wll realze what they have n The George- Anne. Ths s the best college paper n the state. Funny though, I stll hear a lot of grpes and complanng about t. Everybody always wants somethng. It never fals. One thng I've always wanted to nterject but haven't had a chance; we're a college paper for the students, not a gazette for everybody to pddle wth. We can't run everybody's announcement and cover a story on every lttle thng. We just don't have the manpower or space. But we stll get people who call and complan because there s nothng n here about the student washng hs clothes for the frst tme last week. That's the breaks, guys! Remember we're here for the students. We're a student paper. Not an announcement bulletn board! Perhaps n years to come (maybe 50) the paper wll get sorry. Then people can complan f they want, but not rght now. The staff works hard up here and I'll defend them toothand-nal always. We happen to mpress some people, specfcally the professonals who choose the best college papers n the state. At least, they lke our paper. We'll always try and we'll always make mstakes. But that's a part of growng up. Ths s gettng long and slly/'so I guess I'm gong to have to fght back the tears and say good-bye. I'm gonna mss ths school more than anythng ever n my lfe. It has become a part of me, much the same as t has for many others. If I may, I want to thank the prnt shop for ther expertse and help snce I've been edtor. In ths artcle, the "concerned resdent" complaned about the hall councl at Dorman Hall and how t s not as good as t was last year. The reason for ths s the resdents are not as "concerned" as they were last year. As an R A. n Dorman, I know that there have been a lot of opportuntes for the resdents to partcpate n dorm actvtes. We have had flms, educatonal programs, and other actvtes. The result s havng only two or three resdents show up. The most popular thng we dd was food for fnals. Ths lack of partcpaton s not ' because no one knew of the events. The R.A.s always put up sgns for an upcomng event a week or two n advance. We eventually have to put up more sgns to replace the sgns that are torn down. Is ths the fault of the RAs, the hall councl, or the hall drector? It was.also stated that the R.A.s don't deserve ther pay and that they do very lttle work. It's true that we could work harder but I thnk the majorty of us do our job as well as we can. Frst of all, the US Post Offce s nether a legslatve or a judcal branch of government, therefore t cannot make laws makng anythng llegal,.e., chan letters. Chan letters themselves are not llegal. It s however a msdemeanor to a chan letter through the US Postal system. However, t s a felony to tamper wth the mal n any way; therefore, the chan letter rulng s dffcult, f not actually mpossble, to enforce. It appears to me that f certan mal center staff are gong to observe one US Postal regulaton, all regulatons need to be observed, not just the ones that are convenent to call on every so often. However, ntercampus mal s not regulated by US Post Offce regulatons. Therefore, chan letters are not llegal to mal through ths system. It s, however, not a felony to tamper wth the mal ether. The Sukarno government of Indonesa s about to be overthrown and the vewer sees these events through the eyes of Amercan journalst Guy Hamlton (Mel Gbson). Hamlton was sent to Indonesa to cover the story of the overthrow and he dd not count on fallng n love. But fallng n love s nevtable after he meets Jll Bryant (Sgourney Weaver), an employee of the Brtsh embassy. He also becomes close frends wth Blly Kwan (Lnda Hunt), a dwarfszed man who becomes Hamlton's photographer. All of ths happens smultaneously wth the government overthrow. Suceedng n makng a poltcal story nto a love story and vce versa, may seem a hard task to handle. But t s handled; and effectvely at that. Australan flm makers seem to be nvadng the Unted States. But fortunately, the nvason s a productve one. The Australans are defntely httng t bg wth the Amercan audences by producng successful flms lke '^Breaker Morant," "Gallpol" and "The Road Warror." Blly Kwan's recurrent narraton s sometmes a bt melodramatc, but more often effectve. The pace s slow, but travels to a postvely satsfyng clmax. The two leadng players are both very good. Mel Gbson ("Road Warror," "Gallpol") s begnnng to show off more sklls as an actor. Hs presence on the screen s much more transcendeent than t has ever been before. Sgourney Weaver ("Alen," "Eyewtness") s, n her own subtle way, more than just a pretty face used solely to complment Gbson's actng. She s mysterous, and yet mundanely pleasant. The romance between the two s not as steamy as would be seen n "Body Heat," but t s effectve enough to make the vewer long for a happy endng. Probably the greatest pleasure, or better yet, achevement, of the flm s Lnda Hunt as Blly Kwan. Her protrayal of a man could not be more convncng, unless of course a man had done the part. Her sncerty shnes through, and she deserves acknowledgement for her exgent contrbuton to the flm.

You may be surprsed to learn some of the hobbes and hdden talents some GSC students have. Take for nstance Karen Branyan, a junor from McRae. She rases show horses to show on the quarter horse crcut around Georga, Florda and Alabama. Branyan began rdng horses when she was about eght years old. She partcpated n shows at age 14. "You begn condtonng the horse when he s very young," sad Branyan. "You learn to handle hm and get hm used to people. You don't begn rdng hm untl he s two or three years old. Then the whole tranng process s very complcated and tme-consumng." Horse tranng s also a very expensve hobby, accordng to Branyan. It takes at least $2,000 to get started, then the blls keep comng. She feels her tme and money have been well spent. Over the years, she has won many trophes and ganed a great deal of selfsatsfacton. ' Another person wth an nterestng hobby s Darryl Garland, a sophomore from Clayton. He races motorcycles n motorcross races n and near Clayton. "To be good, you must practce daly on some knd of track," sad Garland. "You should also be lmber, have good endurance and be n good shape. Motorcross racng s one of the most physcally demandng sports." Motorcycle racng s also an expensve hobby. On the average, Garland spends about $100 a week to keep hs motorcycle n top shape. Steven Ssson also has a unque hobby as a puppeteer. Ssson began puppetry whle stll n school n Vdala. He enjoys performng and s the presdent of the GSC Puppetry Guld. Ssson makes many of hs owr puppets, addng hs own speca touch to hs shows. It takes many hours of practcng and makng the puppets to put together one good 45- mnute show. On March 17, New Yorkers, Irsh socetes, bands and chldren clad n Irsh costumes parade past St. Patrck's Cathedral. In Savannah, the thrd largest St. Patrck's Day parade n the Unted States takes place. Even a "wee bt of Ireland" s evdent n Dubln, Ga. Why all of the celebratng? No one really knows at least not the people n Statesboro. Suzanne Thompson, a senor at GSC sad that St. Patrck was "a guy that St. Patrck's Day s named after who chased snakes out of Ireland." The myth, along wth many others concernng ths unque holday, has been dstorted through the years. The tradtonal green colors worn and seen on March 17 bear wtness to ts Irsh orgn. However the "wearng of green" has an nterestng story behnd t. An ancent Celtc fertlty rte, the burnng and spreadng of green leaves on the felds before plantng, represented the sprt of vegetaton and hopes for a good crop. Thousands of people throng to Savannah to observe the tradtonal green grts, har, beer and clothes. The clover plant has been worn and dsplayed at the parade and durng the holday to symbolze good fortune. At one tme, t was thought to have been used by St. Patrck to llustrate the Holy Trnty; however, ths was never documented. Not only have people msunderstood the tradtons assocated wth ths holday, but also they have not known the story of St. Patrcks' lfe. Magonus Sucatus Patrcus, St. Patrck, was born n Bannaven, Italy. Hs msson was to baptze and convert those who were not of the Catholc fath. To convert them he taught them the Holy Trnty, psalms, and gospel readngs. Spreadng the word of God, St. Patrck baptzed thousands of Irsh people. After voyagng to Hompatrck, St. Patrck founded the frst church n Ireland, known as St. Patrcks barn. Chrs Kely, however, wth her scssors, razor and other harcuttng equpment, s welcomed nto student's rooms. Kely, a senor at GSC, spends much of her spare tme cuttng har. Maybe you've seen here sgns around campu8-"cut8 and Curls by Chrs." She has shoulder length, wavy blond har (that she doesn't cut herself) and a slght New York accent. Durng her senor year n hgh school, she became nterested n becomng a beautcan, and attended Mr. Paul's School of Cosmetology. Kely sad she frst went to the cosmetology school to have her own har cut. The person who cut t suggested that she enroll n classes there. She attended classes for 10 months, on a part-tme bass, and graduated n 1978, about the tme she graduated from hgh school. Kely got a job as a beautcan n Savannah after she graduated, and worked from Aprl 1978 untl August One of the customers at the shop was an nteror desgner, who nfluenced Kely's nterest n the feld. Kely worked wth her for a month, then entered GSC n fall 1979 as n nteror desgn major. At GSC, Kely makes a lttle spendng money by cuttng har. It helps wth the blls and "pays as well as any job I could ask for," she sad. Her customers are manly college students, who apprecate her reasonable prces. She cuts har wth a deceptve ease, lftng a secton and snppng t neatly, carryng on a conversaton wth a customer all the whle. Word-of-mouth advertsng s one of the man ways Kely gets her customers. She cuts a person's har, then they tell ther frends, eta Kely wll go to customers' rooms or apartments, or they can go to her apartment. One of the other thngs that Kely enjoys s beng a Grl Scout leader. A former Grl Scout herself, she lkes beng nvolved wth them. "Before I knew t, I was 'drafted' nto t. I love t," Kely exclamed. Kely lkes lvng n Statesboro, and hopes to get a job related to her major, n order to gan experence before movng nto a larger cty. She hopes to eventually fnd a job desgnng ktchens, or maybe even archtecture, but rght now she (lterally) has her hands full cuttng har. By MARY ANNE OLLMAN Features Wrter How many tmes a day do you check that dear ole Landrum box? For some t can be up to 20 tmes a day n hopes of recevng money from the folks. For others t may be only once a quarter. But on the average let's say three or four tmes a day. Well, on your many walks to and from your malbox, have you ever notced that cute lttle lady that sells stamps? You know the one wth the short black har, gold rmmed glasses, and cute lttle smle. You should get to know her, she's qute an nterestng and funny lady. Her name s Dana Mare McDanel. She's also known to some as "Lttle Bt." She's only 5'1" and she's just that, lttle. To most of us, however, McDanel s just known as "Ms. Mal Lady." McDanel's frst job n Statesboro wasn't GSC's mal center, but she s really glad she's employed here now. She's been workng at the center for about a year and two months, and she loves t. She especally enjoys the students. She sad, "Nnety-nne pont nne percent of the tme the students are really nce. No, I should say fantastc. They really make workng here really fun." Along wth sellng about a thousand stamps a day, her job ncludes breakng down mal and dstrbutng t nto those dear ole malboxes. That's a bundle of mal f you consder all the letters we get from mom and dad, boyfrends and grlfrends, and frends. She sad that on a daly bass, there are approxmately 3,000 frst class letters, 1,000 other class letters, a 500 to 700 newspapers and up to 100 packages receved. Most people barely have enough patence to sort homework papers, much less about 5,000 letters. Cheerfulness and a sense of humor are defntely characterstc of McDanel. She loves to cut up wth the students. One student walked up to the wndow and asked for 20 stamps, and then she remarked after handlng her the stamps, "Just don't let 'em get wet." There are tme when McDanel's rules or Landrum' rules aren't lked. One rule n partcular s not beng able to send food through the mal to other boxes. Herpes can also be a dreaded word but, accordng to Dr. Carey Goodman, perhaps not dreaded enough. Goodman, a local physcan, spoke to well over 100 nterested students and faculty recently on the medcal aspects of herpes. We are once agan very compettve." After completng a successful Seahawk Invtatonal, the GSC Lady Eagle swmmers wll st back and enjoy the laurels of ther season. "We swam better ths year as a team than we dd last year," sad Head Coach Conrad Helms. The latest team accomplshment, earnng fourth place n the Seahawk Invtatonal, was an encouragng season fnale. In the Seahawk, the Lady Eagles captured sx frst place postons, three second place spots, and two thrd place fnshes. Mch Martn, a team leader, captured frst place n the four events; the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 50-yard butterfly, and 100-yard butterfly. Martn set new school records n all four events and set new Invtatonal records n the 50-yard freestyle, 50-yard butterfly, and the 100-yard butterfly. For her outstandng accomplshments, Martn was named the Seahawk Invtatonal Most Valuable Swmmer. Other frst place fnshes were won n the 200-yard medley relay by Lynn Pattson, Jody Howard, Martn, and Mary Kramer, and n the 400-yard freestyle relay by Charlene Bckman, Dramer, Patrca Snclar, and Martn. The 200-yard medley relay set a new school record. The 400-yard freestyle relay set a new school record and a new Invtatonal record. Second place fnshes were recorded by Lynn Manson n the 50- yard breaststroke, and Snclar n the 500-yard freestyle and the 1650 freestyle. Pattson placed thrd n the 100-yard backstroke and Snclar was thrd n the 200-yard freestyle. The successful 1983 season can be attrbuted to the varety of freshmen swmmers on the team. "We had to work to get our younger swmmers close to the ntensty of our workouts," stated Helms. "The coachng staff had bg decsons to make. We chose to work on our swmmers physcally and mentally. We feel that our mprovement n endurance and self-esteem wll carry over nto the next year," Helms sad. The 1984 team looks more promsng than ever. Helms promses to recrut swmmers n four areas: dvng, ndvdual medley, 200-yard breaststroke, and 200-yard butterfly. "So far we have many recruts nterested n our program," Helms sad. After four matches each, the lades were 2-2, whle the men were 3-1. Women's Coach George Shrver acheved hs 100th wn at GSC as the women downed Flagler 7-2. "It was a very close match wth perfect weather," sad Shrver. "We should have won," sad Shrver n response to ther close 5-4 loss aganst a hgh ranked Rollns team. The women came out of sngles 3-3, then lost two doubles matches. "We lost to a weaker team, but we dd play poor doubles." The women dropped ther second n a row to Stetson, 2-7. "They played wth ntensty; we were flat," sad Shrver. "They deserved to wn." The two wns for GSC came from Faughnan defeatng Terr Fletcher 6-2, 6-0, and McCurry-Fountan defeatng Fletcher-Thomson 6-3, 6-4 n doubles acton. Baseball Eagles hammer Monarchs; splt wth JU By RICHARD POLLETTE Sports Wrter The GSC Eagles blew past the NAIA Methodst Monarchs 21-7 at Eagle Feld last Wednesday. GSC scored 21 runs on 24 hts and went through four Methodst ptchers n the process. Jeff Petzoldt, who sat out last season wth an ankle njury, led the way for the Eagles wth a perfect fve for fve day at the plate, ncludng three RBFs and three runs scored. "I knew we were gong to have a good httng team," sad Petzoldt. "I worked on my httng durng the summer and t's payng off. I'm just ready to play ball." Petzoldt was not the only one ready to play ball. Ben Abner fnshed the day three-for-fve wth a two run homer n the thrd and a three run shot n the fourth. Steve Peruso ht a home run over the centerfeld fence n the fourth and a three run homer n the seventh. Leadng 5-2 gong to the bottom of the fourth, GSC broke the game open wth back-to-back homers by Abner and Peruso to gve the Eagles an 11-2 advantage. Included n the lst were sx lnemen, two runnng backs, three quarterbacks, three defensve backs, and one lnebacker. The coach was pleased wth the way hs recrutng season has gone thus far, as compared wth last year. "We started last year and we just went after people who ddn't sgn wth anybody else," sad Russell. "Ths year we were n the thck of thngs from the start. We competed wth good schools for all of our prospects." GSC's offensve lne got the bggest boost wth the addton of sx offensve lneman, three of whom were from Athens. They are Henry Haynes, 6-0, 241 pounds, and Greg Wllams, 6-2, 233 pounds, both from Clark Central. Also sgned was Chrs Candler, 5-11, 237 pounds, from Cedar Shoals. Haynes, by far, s the best of the bunch wth 5.0 speed n the 40-yard dash. Thngs are really startng to get exctng around here. Erk Russell, n one year, has turned GSC nto such a football power that even last year's Natonal Champons are afrad to play us. Hey, I was just jokng before when I was talkn' Albuquerque and all that stuff. But after beatng USC, maybe I wasn't jokng after all. The GSC men's swm team completed a rebuldng season at 4-5 wth a seventh place fnsh at the Seahawk Invtatonal. Ths season, the Eagle swm team broke eght of 16 school records. Seven of those eght records were broken at the Seahawk Invtatonal Kelly Allen, a sophomore and team leader, hghlghted the meet by capturng frst place n the 200-yard backstroke and breakng a school, pool, and meet record. Allen also broke the school record n the 100- yard backstroke breakng hs own record and brngng n an Eagle second place fnsh. "Kelly had a hard transton from Daytona to GSC," Floyd sad. "We ddn't know f t could be done, but he has mproved on hs Natonal Junor College record." Other school records were broken n the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke by Bran Murray, the 200-yard butterfly by Paolo Ambrogn, 400-yard ndvdual medley by Scott Farmer, and the 400- yard medley relay by Allen, Bran Murray, Blly Maurer, and Paul "Tank" McNamara.
