1 Pool sde Men'wn opener page 11 Rnk sde A gmmnse at thg Marst hockey home crowd page 5-1 VOLUME 43, NUMBER 6 Marst College, Poughkeepse, NY NOVEMBER11,1993 Marst lbrary needs mprovement, say students by LYNN WELAND When dscussng Vson '94, many students agree wth Jeff Broderck, a junor, when he says "the vson s blurred" Whle the constructon of the new townhouses has found much prase among students, the seemng lack of mprovement on the lbrary draws consderable crtcsm from them Many students feel that the college has forgotten ts man prorty of educaton whle focusng on the expanson and development of the college " thnk our lbrary needs more mprovements before we need an art gallery The other stuff s great but the lbrary s the prorty," senor Amv Martterer sad John McGnty, drector of the lbrary, understands the complants of the students and feels that most of them are justfed "The students want the lbrary as the next prorty, and thnk that t should be the next prorty," McGnty sad McGnty also sad that the ' lbrary s not bg enough for ths number of students There should be a seatng capacty for 25 percent of the total resdent student body, accordng to McGnty, and Marst does not come close to that goal "We should have 800 or 900 seats," he sad"we have-375" Ths lack of seatng becomes more of a problem as,md-term and fnal exams approach Along wth ths complant, students also pont out that there s practcally no prvate studyng areas n the lbrary McGnty and students are n agreement that a new lbrary s necessary^ however, lke most projects, money s the key problem! Yes-246 No-373 ng avalable electroncally, the problem should decrease, McGnty sad The lbrary also faces many complants about nose, a problem whch McGnty also notes "How do you get everyone to talk at the same tme Everyone studes and socalzes at dfferent tmes, that's the way t s," McGnty sad Despte the many complants "The staff s great, some wll go out of ther way to help you get nformatpn^" Amy Martterer sad Senor Ralph Musolno, when asked to name a postve thng sad wth lttle hestaton, "The staff The lbrarans are great" McGnty sad the lbrary wll contnue to grow t s currently at maxmum electrcal capacty, s edged for space, and s workng wth a lmted budget and staff, but developments wll stll contnue StMents losng fath despte extra securty by KRSTNA WELLS Securtyhas been kept busy n the early part of ths semester Wthn the frst two weeks of school there wasan alleged rape and a thrd degree assault on a male student " Because securtycouldn't keep up wth all of the calls for escorts on campus, Ph Sgma Kappa and Kappa Kappa Gammavolunteered to sponsored a student escort servce The students handled the escort servce n order to allow securty to patrol and do ther job more easly Many students are questonng f securty has been upgraded and f members of the securty has been dong ts job, or f t has contnued to be the same securty t has always been Accordng to Joe Leary, drector of college safety and securty, Marst College securty has been upgraded and wll contnue to'be further upgraded n the next- few weeks "We had orgnally planned to remove the Lowell Thomas and Dyson buldng guards and put them on foot patrol of the North End," Leary sad "nstead, we hred three full tme, temporary securty guards There wll be three posts added from 8:00 pm to 4:00 am" Accordng to Leary, the securty coverage for the dorms was changed after the rape nstead of the fve-day coverage from Tuesday to Sunday mornng, securty wll cover the dorms seven days a week Leary sad the addton of the campus van and securty n Beck Place parkng lot has helped to secure problems on campus "To ensure the safety of the students parked n Beck Place, we have taken one buldng offcer and put hm on foot patrol back there from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm," he sad "After nght classes are over, we put hm back n the buldng" Leary sad all of these upgrades have helped to better secure the campus aganst harm He sad he hopes these changes are permanent " certanly hope t wll reman ths way n upcomng years," he sad "'d lke to feel ths s a permanent upgrade We certanly need t" Although securty has mproved n number, many students are stll angry about the ncdents on campus and stll feel unsafe on ther own campus Many of the students who lve on campus sad they don't feel securty s dong ts job Kendra Glen, a sophomore, sad she doesn't lke the fact that securty spends all ts tme tcketng cars nstead of makng sure the students are safe " thnk they should take less tme puttng boots on cars and tcketng and spend more tme on protectng us, that's what they are supposed to do," she sad Andrew Szegda, a sophomore n Champagnat Hall, sad t has come down to students dong securty's job He sad the escort servce s done by the students nstead of securty and that the students are upgradng securty, not the offcers A freshmen resdent of Champagnat Hall, Lou Reynolds, sad secur- see UPGRADE page 4

2 2 THE CRCLE, NOVEMBER 11,1993 THE CRCLE, NOVEMBER 11,1993 y 9 Frosty can t be found n Burton's 'Nghtmare by ANDREW BORS & COLLEEN MURPHY Colleen: Almost everyone can magne Santa's workshop at the North Pole, but Tm Burton takes us to the Halloween laboratory of lack Skellngton, the "Pumpkn Kng" Halloween Land s the place where all of the ghosts and goblns lve year-round, watng for Oct : Andrew: The stop-acton anmated flm "The Nghtmare Before Chrstmas" s a story about how Jack fnds hs way to Chrstmas Town and decdes to have hs very own Chrstmas n Halloween Land Tm Burton has taken the tradton of Rankn and Bass ("Rudolph The Red-Nosed Rendeer," "The Year Wthout A Santa Claus") and turned t nto a sad commentary on the lack of holday sprt C: Jack, our hero, s tred of the sameness of hs Halloween extravaganzas, and after stumblng upon Chrstmas Town, decdes he needs a change of pace He fgures that Halloween Land can do just as good a job as Chrstmas Town, and tres to make the holday hs own He doesn't realze that the Halloween people aren't ready for Chrstmas A: Aded by the qurky muscal stylngs of Danny Elfman, Burton takes us to a dfferent level of holday entertanment 1 don't know, however, f ths s a level 'm comfortable wth; "Nghtmare" wasn't too amusng Sure* there were some funny scenes and one or two really catchy songs, but for the hours and hours put nto ths flm, thnk they could have come up wth a more nterestng story _ Kds wll probably" become dsnterested after the frst few scenes C: found t fascnatng to be nsde the mnd of Tm Burton for an hour The producer/creator of "Nghtmare" has had doodles of the characters n a notebook for years True, the: plot wasn't Oscar materal, but that's not what was lookng for t was vsually pleasng, the musc was good, and the talkng skeleton, as well as all of the charaters, were lkable t wasn't a complete waste of tme A: Colleen, let me ask you a queston Do you thnk ths flm has the potental of stayng around year after year lke those old Rankn and Bass flms have? C: queston the stayng power of Rankn and Bass as well, because they stopped puttng "The Year Wthout A Santa Claus" on televson n the late 70's/early 80's due to volent mages assocated wth Santa Claus;; t scared the young vewers A: All n all, gve "Nghtmare" Fve Qurky Danny Elfmans t was entertanng, but wu annoy and confuse younger vewers C: thought lked t before we wrote ths, but the mere fact that we spent-the-whole tme-argung about the merts of Chrstnas programs leads me to beleve that ' 'Nghtmare*' wasn't a flm to remember No grunge, no flannel, no Wetland V strkes back by DANA BUONCONT Ths column sn't gong to be an easy one to wrte, smply because stll haven't totally decded what thnk of the new Pearl Jam record know lke t, but whether t's as good as "Ten"well, let's just say the jury sn't out yet For starters, "Vs" s consderably dfferent than "Ten," and not what thought t would sound lke upon ntal lstenngs But suppose that's a good thng f t had sounded lke "Ten," you'd hear me complanng "sophomore slump" "Vs," however, s decdedly not Whether t holds up as well as "Ten" has done remans to be seen f ths record lacks anythng, t's the mmedate emotonal mpact that "Ten" possessed fgurethat's because there were no expectatons for "Ten," and more than enough for "Vs" What seems to be most apparent about the record (asde from the fact that my revew of t s several weeks overdue) s that t manages to be both more dverse and a lot catcher The percusson-drven "WMA" sounds nothng lke anythng from "Ten" But the same could be sad for "Daughter," "Glorfed G," and "Elderly Woman Behnd The Counter n A Small Town" thnk the secret ths tme out s drummer Dave Abbruzzese; hs playng really drves the songs, wth a beat that s equal parts thrash and fnesse The entre band s credted wth songwrtng dutes, possbly suggestng the desre to be recognzed asfveequals (hence the former ttle "Fve Aganst One," maybe?) Gutarsts Stone Gossard and 3 Crtc relshes 'Flesh by JENNFER GANDALONE "Flesh and Bone," starrng reallfe couple Meg Ryan and Denns Quad, s a beautfully shot flm that has a constant mood of apprehenson On a farm n a small town n 1950's Texas, a lost young boy s taken n by a famly who provdes hm"wth a place to stay- "' n the mddle of the nght, the boy wakes up, unlockng the front door of the house to let n hs father, Roy Sweeney (James Caan, "Honeymoon n Vegas"), who proceeds to steal everythng nsde Hearng the door open, the owner of the house comes downstars and tres to stop the ntruder The owner shoots at Roy and msses Roy then klls hm and the rest of hs famly, except for an nfant grl Cut to 25 years later where we meet Arls Sweeney (Denns Quad, "DOA"), a quet man who servces and supples vendng machnes for a lvng n a number of small towns; t's no secret that Arls s the adult verson of the young boy who saw hs father murder an nnocent famly n the begnnng of the flm He s not at all prepared for the turn hs lfe s about to take and the memores that are gong to come back to haunt hm Enter Kay Daves (Meg Ryan, Earn cash now! they are lookng for help from Marst students The company, receves approxmately 1,200 fre and rescue calls every year 200 of those calls come from Marst They get the call from Marst securty, and the
