Fallen trees and downed wres caused more than 100,000 Central Hudson Gas & Electrc customers to lose power, and hundreds of students and professors were among those left n the dark. Some off-campus students and professors dd not get ther electrcty back untl the weekend. Marst canceled classes untl 12:30 Wednesday afternoon, and resdents of townhouses sectons A, B, and C were requred to relocate to other dorms by 7:00 p.m. Tuesday to avod any hazards assocated wth remanng overnght n a resdence wthout power. Many campus phones were also out of commsson, whch made keepng students nformed of the stuaton all the more dffcult. North End Resdent Assstant $ Patrck Mara sad ts was one of the most frustratng aspects of the power outage because communcaton was lmted to word of mouth and sgns. Student speaker at Baccalaureate wll begn new Marst College tradton by DARYL RICHARD Crcle Correspondant A new tradton has begun at Marst, courtesy, of the senor class. The annual Baccalaureate ceremony, a senor awards event held each year the day before graduaton, wll now add a student speaker to the program. In past years, only faculty and admnstrators spoke at the hourlong event. Student Body Presdent Pat Mara worked on the dea wth Senor Class Presdent Chrs Kadus and members of the graduaton commttee. "I was excted that we can start a tradton where students wll partcpate n the ceremony," Mara "Never before has a student partcpated." Denns J. Murray, presdent of Marst, approved the new addton to the Baccalaureate last week, sayng t wll enhance the ceremony. "The Baccalaureate s supposed to be a tme of reflecton, values, and an opportunty to thnk about the mportant thngs n lfe," Murray 'Ths wll further, the nvolvement of students n commencement exercses." Mara sad t has not yet been decded who the speaker wll be, but t wll lkely be a choce between Kadus and hmself. - He sad he wants the student government connecton because the club's offcers do most of the plannng and nteracton wth the senor class. Kadus sad he agrees wth the possble speaker choces, addng that he and Mara are close wth the senor class and do a great deal of work for them, ncludng plannng senor week events and graduaton actvtes. "The ceremony wll be a lttle more personal [for the students]," Kadus Mara sad havng a student speaker wll also be another way for the Class of '97 to leave ts mprnt at Marst. "We're settng the gudelnes for ms, so t'll be carved n stone for the future," Mara The dea for a speaker, whch Mara sad has been brewng throughout the school year, rocked back and forth between havng the student speak.at graduaton and at Baccalaureate. It was decded that havng an addtonal student speaker at commencement would detract from the valedctoran's speech. Mara sad t wll be decded wthn the next few weeks who the speaker wll be for the ceremony. He sad he wants the fve to 10 mnute message to summarze the last four years at Marst and nspre the graduates. Ad expert dscusses gender and the mythc mage at all-day lecture seres by T I M MANSON A&E Edtor Sal Randazzo, senor vce presdent and worldwde strategc plannng drector for McCann Erckson of New York spoke on Wednesday for the Ambassador Program of The Advertsng Educatonal Foundaton. The Ambassador program sends hgh level, experenced advertsng or marketng executves to colleges and unverstes across the country to speak to students and faculty about the advertsng process, ncludng how t fts nto the economc and socal structure and the ssues surroundng t. Randazzo, who spoke manly on the topcs of gender and mythc mage, stressed the mportance of psychc archetypes n one of hs four lectures on Wednesday. "We have to, by psychc archaeology, peel back layers to get to dark places people don't know they have," sad Randazzo. Lam Hayden, a junor marketng major, sad ths means when someone buys somethng, they do not buy the product they buy the brand. "Accordng to an artcle Randazzo wrote enttled Advertsng Bulds and Mantans Brands By Creatng Mytho-Symbolc Worlds, Hayden s correct n hs nterpretaton of Randazzo. "Advertsng transforms products nto brands by creatng mytho-symbolc worlds and assocatng them wth a product," sad Randazzo. Randazzo backs ths up wth examples lke Campbell's, Marlboro, and HarleyDavdson, who have all created a myth of what ther product represents. For example, Randazzo says that for Campbell's soup, the mythc mage s of a mother servng a bowl of soup to her chld on a cold wnter afternoon. Hayden sad Randazzo changed hs whole outlook on advertsng. "I thought t was nterestng because I never looked at ads that way before and how deeply they're embedded n the psyche," sad Hayden. "It showed me how ads really work." In hs last lecture of the day, Randazzo spoke to a large class of advertsng majors. He spoke about personal experence on an ad campagn he recently worked on for Marott Hotels. Randazzo sad that n creatng a blueprnt for an advertsng campagn, one has to fgure out who the artcle s addressng, what to say to that target, and how to say t. Ths s known n advertsng terms as the target, the message, and the executon. Randazzo explaned how the busnessman tradtonally s consdered to be a road warror, but the modern busnessman s not the money hungry type that exsted n the 1980s. "The busnessman of the '90s s the 'Enlghtened Warror' who works hard but s not just about work," sad Randazzo. "Marott s the caretaker to help that warror." So, Randazzo's message for the Marott account became that the Marott wll help you acheve mastery over the busness oflfe. Joe Ddato, a junor advertsng major, sad he thought there should have been more tme for a queston and answer perod. "I had a couple of questons I would have lked to ask, consderng he s a strategy specalst, and I know other people wanted to ask as well," sad Ddato. He started wth nothng, yet he mantaned hs roots n Dutchess County," Masse Dyson mantaned hs roots by fnancally supportng the arts and educaton through the Dyson Foundaton, whch he and hs wfe, Margaret, began 40 years ago. In 1989, a gft to Marst College from the Dyson Foundaton helped buld the Dyson Center on North campus. Accordng to Masse, the buldng was seen as a trbute from Dyson's chldren to ther; parents.. "He nstlled n each of hs chldren a true understandng of communty servce. [The chldren] reflected that sense of respect, for them by gvng some-, thng to the communty," he Dyson generously supported the college over the years, but accordng to Murray, never wth much dsplay. At a meetng wth townhouse resdents at 3:00 p.m. last Tuesday, North End Resdent Drector Sam Johnson sad restorng power to Marst was a prorty because the secton of campus wthout power s connected to the same power lnes as Sant Francs Hosptal. "One of the postves that we have on our sde s we're on the same lne as Sant Francs, and obvously, Sant Francs' power s essenta," Johnson " Johnson also stressed that Marst could do nothng about the power outage. Yacovone, who s applyng to lve n the Old Townhouses, sad the months before the room selecton forms are due s not a pleasant tme of the year. "It's just very aggravatng and stressful, and you feel a lot of tenson and hostlty when makng decsons," she Frendshps, Yacovone added, can be hurt by the whole decson-makng process. "It's frustratng because I thnk that the whole process of decdng who's gong to lve where and wth whom can make or break frendshps," she Kennedy, who s also applyng to lve n the Old Townhouses, sad part of the reason for the tenson between frends s because group members do not talk t over wth everyone n the group. It made us realze how vulnerable we are. We have become so dependent on TVs, telephones, rados, and computers. We are almost powerless wthout them because, then, we have no ways of communcatng wth each other. Our socety has become so technologcally drven, that we do not know how to functon wthout t. However, once we strp away all these electronc gadgets, we stll have one thng left nterpersonal communcaton. Before, talkng was so dffcult. People were often separated by large dstances. Now that t s so easy to talk to somebody, the value of communcaton has been degraded. Sometmes, t seems lke we have lost the art of good conversaton. It takes thnkng sklls. Sometmes, we thnk we are communcatng wth other people, but we are not really. We ask people what they dd last nght, what they dd today, what they are dong tomorrow. We do not often explore deeper ssues, such as ther nner fears, hopes, goals and dreams. Those are the types of conversatons that we need to have. We need to communcate wth a person on another level n order to fully satsfy ourselves as human bengs. As crazy as t may sound, t s good to talk to yourself. It does not have to be out loud. It s sometmes good to just st back and reflect on thngs wth one or two thoughts to keep you company. Sometmes, you have to shut out all the exteror voces and what people are tellng you to do and lsten to your nner voce. Then, when you have sorted out your prortes, you can re-jon the group and move on wth your lfe. Talkng s really an art form. Sometmes t s hard to get beyond the basc "small talk." But, however, you have to start someplace. Then, you can move on to talkng about the queston of the meanng of Ufe ': ;; r '; '*: ;"' -{ H^: ; We need to turn the televson set off once n a whle and just chat wth one another. People should take tme to talk about current ssues and problems, ncludng what bothers them n ther lves. Talkng can often prevent a conflct from happenng. Wars have often been started because of a lack of communcaton. Slence s not good. I am n Xamen, a specal economc zone, teachng oral and wrtten Englsh at Lujang Unversty, a three year vocatonal school of some 1300 students. Unfortunately, most of the reportng on Chna s negatve: human rghts volatons, Three Gorges Dam runng Chna's hertage, and the relgous persecuton of "underground" Catholcs. These months of daly contact wth the Chnese people, students and adults, have helped me understand both my country and Chna better. Over one bllon people here are very happy wth the development of ther country under Deng Xaopng's "socalsm wth Chnese characterstcs." What's more, they are blatantly proud of ther country, and say so repeatedly. They do not at all understand why the US meda are so ntent on portrayng Chna so negatvely. I beleve t s because our meda come from a pror, that s, pre-judgng, prejudced postons. Chna s Communst, and Communsm has never been any good anywhere; therefore, t cannot be any good n Chna. From the realty I see and hear, ths s not true n the present Chna. The US meda also beleve that a one-party system has, hstorcally, never done lastng good, and has never been democratc. Agan, Chna seems to be, for the present,.belyng that hstorcal fact. There s no other way, for the tme beng, that Chna could make the ggantc progress t s 'currently makng e.g.. nne percent annual, gdptncrease ^undera USA-type Congress. Crses need aumbrtavah leadershp.'successful^ CEOs do not need commttee consensus. Thngs wll change n the course of tme. The 8th Plenum of the Natonal People's Congress ended on March 14. The offcal paper of the country, the Chna Daly, reported n one of the many artcles on ths Plenum that t was the most successful ever because the percent of approval of decsons made was the lowest ever! Ths was taken as a sgn of the growng ntellectual qualty of the 2700 delegates. Approval was stll at a more than 75 percent hgh, but nonetheless ndcated growng debate and opposton. The consttuton of Chna presently bans a second poltcal party, and to start one s treason. I beleve that, n tme, a second party wll naturally emerge. We must not forget that mssonares came to Chna by the hundreds, especally n the wake of Brtsh gunboats that forced opum on the Chnese because the Indan market was declnng. After Hong Kong s resttuted to Chna ths July 1, perhaps the Chnese wll start forgettng the nfamous Unequal Treates dctated by Westen cannons. Then, perhaps once agan, Chrstan schools wll be allowed n Chna and wll not be perceved as colonalst tools. More than one bllon Chnese are eager to learn Englsh. I urge you to spend a year or two some Amercans here wth me are n ther eghth year, so happy are they! teachng Englsh and experencng for yourself the realty of New Chna and the warmth and gracousness of the Chnese. As normal socal nteracton becomes a necessty for work and pleasure, t-seems man streamers uuce for granted that everyone they meet shares n the normal procedures of socal exchange. Our socety forces a self-centered orentaton on us, and we have lttle tme for those acquantances who do not beneft our endeavors. So, cordally, we dsmss the average acquantance wth the percepton that he has busness of hs own to attend, and paths may or may not cross wth ths partcular person, dependng upon future crcumstances. Ths s qute a normal, socetally acceptable method of socal nteracton. Commercals get more creatve every day, but one of my favortes that stopped arng recently featured Denns Leary walkng between computer montors occuped by blankly starng nternet surfers. Leary asks, "What are you dong?" The monotonous reply s, "Just browsng." The advertsement advocates more productve use of the world wde web. "Raw captalsm," accordng to Leary's commercal, would make much more effectve usage of the nternet than "browsng." The relatvely small facton of socal msfts that comprse groups lke Heavens Gaters, Montana Freedmen, Branch Dvdans, and whte supremacsts take advantage of the web for the purpose of combnng forces and recrutng members. Instead of normal socal nteracton, confused or unsocable people may choose to browse the nternet, and durng ther browsng sessons they fall vctm to the emotonally appealng traps left by extremst groups lke the Heavens Gaters. Mult-mllon dollar corporatons, lke IBM or AT&T, do not expect ther commercals promotng the nternet, laden wth the nnocent faces of chldren droppng profound lnes of future euphora, to bolster the efforts of extremst groups. Unfortunately, the KKK web page can nstantaneously lnk a web surfer wth other whte supremacst stes. Applewhte admtted the resurgence of hs cult came about through nternet contacts. To suggest that the nternet s to blame for the mass sucde s absurd; the nternet can only operate as ts human nstructor ntends. The many postve attrbutes of nformaton transfer that the nternet provdes cannot be outweghed by the sparse accounts of msuse. After readng the nformaton about the sucde, I wondered f the nformaton about Heavens Gate would reman a popular cte to browse. Perhaps a lnk has already been made between lp balm and Heavens Gate. I must admt, f 1 was. not computer llterate, and f a I had the tme, I mght have looked for Applewhte's page out of curosty. Bll Mekrut s the poltcal columnst for The Crcle. It happens each and every sprng Ths week, I saw Marst's harbnger of sprng I saw my frst skunk of the season. Though, more tellng of the change n season s the weather. Yesterday, I stopped off on my way back from class to lsten to the brds and the sound of a nearby waterfall. Well, I thought I heard a waterfall, but, I then glanced around. Qute frankly, the dea of a waterfall was not kosher, t was not even n the ball park, but enough talk about hot dogs. (Do you know what ther made of? Knd of lke cold dogs, only nevermnd. I know, very lame). I then realzed I was standng on "a manhole, and I was merely beng serenaded by the soothng babble of the sewer. Ths thought dd not dstract me from takng t all n, though somethng else dd. I have to be the.only one n the cvlzed world, er wat that s a bt of a contradcton anyway, I am at least one of the few blghted wth an llness n these frst days of sprng. It seems I have tred every concevable drug, (Hmm. Every concevable drug? Would that be every drug asde from brth control?), avalable over the counter to at least numb the symptoms of ths vrus. Anyway, not only does sprng brng skunks and dsease, but the sght of the Marst crew team gldng along the Hudson s as manstream around here as the Hudson tself (pun ntended). I commented to one of the members of the crew team on how nce t must to row on the rver. She quckly tred to dslluson me by remndng me of all the grme that s typcally assocated wth the Hudson. As I was unfazed by her persuasons, she fnally added that someone had once found a dead graffe floatng n the rver. She sad I had to thnk that was dsturbng, f not odd. It seemed pretty logcal to me. One would be hard pressed to fnd a lve graffe n the Hudson, as I do not beleve they can swm. Only a couple of weeks ago, most students were walkng to class almost as brskly as the weather tself. But no more. Sprng s here. Another sgn s the frequency of potental members of de Class of 2001 walkng through campus, guded by our peers, the Marst Tour Gudes. Campus tours for potental members of the Class of 2001 lesurely stroll by. Well, I suppose walkng backwards s a lttle less than lesurely. The gudes attempt to perfect ths art of whle jugglng names lke "Champagnat" and "Benot" on ther tongues wth grace that can only be attaned after at least a semester or two at Marst. Even more nterestng are the potental students tryng to hde the embarrassment that mom's nqury about bathroom santaton or co-ed floors and the humlaton that Dad's plad pants brng about. I never took one of those r. -. tours. My parents lke to take me to schools to whch I would never be accepted. I suppose that they fgure f we showed tremendous convcton to the place, admssons would come around and feel oblgated to let me n. If not, Dad could always contest t. After all, he bought a T- shrt. In one such sprng trp to Vllanova, I felt so utterly out of place that I nssted to my parents that my ankle was botherng me and I just couldn't go on wth the tour. Dad suggested that we swng by the athletc tranng room and talk to the traner, whch I found mortfyng. So, I pressed on, and perhaps one nterestng thng, though not very funny, came of endurng that tour. The tour gude, despte the tour parents fervent warnngs, plunged backwards down a small flght of stars. (Yes, she was okay well, n good enough shape to fnsh the tour). Well, despte my seemngly mxed revew of a season, perhaps a result of Robtussn slghtly dullng my senses, I am as grateful as a can of parmesan cheese about the arrval of sprng. Wat, no, that would be "grated." Heck, maybe I'm just as cheesy as that can of parmesan. Tara Qunn s The Crcle's humorcolumst When I was 10,1 mssed out on all the Haley's Comet furor. It had somethng to wth lvng between two mountans and unfavorable atmospherc condtons. Ether that, or there was just a really compellng epsode of ALF on. I forget whch. In any event, snce I mssed the last once-n-alfetme astronomcal phenomenon, I was compelled tcrsee ths~one. When'-I frst caught a glmpse of the comet several weeks ago, I commented to myself how t was a truly wondrous sght. How such a thng could exst n the same unverse as Pauly Shore s utterly bafflng. It was not untl several days later that I began to thnk of the appearance of ths comet as somethng to be dreaded (though not nearly as much as Pauly Shore). Then, I realzed that the problem s not the comet tself, but how the Heaven's Gate cult nterpreted ts presence. It s hard to do much else than feel sorry for them. There was obvously somethng mssng from ther lves f they would sgn up for a whacked-out crusade led by a man who looked lke Lesle Nelsen after a couple of all-nghters. Would any of you sgn up to be sheep to a man and a woman that called themselves "Bo and Peep?" What s probably the most troublng thng about ths partcular cult s that t s not flled wth the knd of msfts, rejected crcus freaks, and former chld actors that one would expect tofndn a relgous cult. Much lke the Doomsday cult that made headlnes n Japan after the gas attack on a Tokyo subway, the Heaven's Gate cult s comprsed of seemngly normal, somewhat successful, average, every day ctzens. Unfortunately, that just makes the whole thng that much more bafflng. As tme went on, the appeal of the cult grew substantally. People from all walks of lfe chose to leave behnd ther jobs, ther famles, and everythng that they had known before, wth the hope that they would be able to htch ardeon Amtrak's nterstellar lne. Wth the advent of nternet technology, t became much easer to reach out to prospectve members. After suckng down gallons of packaged frut juces and caffnated beverages, the Heaven's Gate cultsts sat down to desgn web pages, and to post n nternet groups lke "alt.sucde" and "alt.crazy.bastard.seeks.same." Not surprsngly, ths was ncredbly effectve, as t enabled them to reach the specalzed groups of people they were scourng the globe for. One of the problems wth gettng a look nsde the mnd of the members of the Heaven's Gate cult (whch would probably be about as unnervng as hearng Mckey Rourke's answers to an nk blot test) s that they were dscouraged from communcatng wth ther famles. In fact, there really was not much contact between them n the outsde world. Ths was probably because they knew they were not gong to have to put up wth the hustle and bustle down on Earth for much longer. Besdes, who needs to go outsde when there are epsodes of 'BattlestarGalactca' and 'Space: 1999' to watch? The reports featurng famly members areflledwth stores lke that of Robert Maeder, whose daughter had joned the cult three years ago. Lke other famles of cult members, he receved a handful of postcards throughout the years. Davd Moore, who spent 21 years n the cult, only saw hs parents on two occasons. He stated that contact wth famly members would "tug at hs vbratonal level." Speakng of whch, one of the bggest tenets of Heaven's Gate was that one needed to renounce hs or her sexualty. Apparently, ths was more dffcult for some members of the group, as a sgnfcant number of the men n the cult had been surgcally castrated. I guess f you are dscouraged from ever seeng anyone else, and you cannot even touch the other cult members, you have to fnd some way to releve your pent-up sexual frustratons. For these members of the Heaven's Gate cult, the most logcal thng was to get out the old testcular gullotne. Not that logc s really an approprate concept here. What I cannot fgure out s that f they were no longer gong to need ther bodes, what were all of the quarters for? Just n case the E-Z Pass on the Hale-Bopp comet dd not work? Perhaps ther souls were not as clean as they had been told, and they mght have had to stop at a laundrymat somewhere along the way. It could be that the space shp followng the comet only has publc phones. Or maybe they just wanted to make sure they would be able to play Donkey Kong Junor when they reach the great beyond. Of course, t s probably just another example of what a crackpot plan ths was. For whatever reason, Herff Applewhte, or Bo, or Do, or Don't...whatever he was callng hmself that week, felt the need to drag 38 people down nto the dsturbng hell that he created for hmself. Worst of all, we do not know why he dd t, or just what t was that compelled these people to follow along. Most lkely, we never wll. Chrstan Bladt s the opnon edtor for The Crcle.

Accordng to Techman, there are several reasons for havng the memoral program at Marst. Frst, he sad, t ncreases the awareness of the Holocaust as an event of enormous sgnfcance n recent hstory. Second, t remembers the vctms of Naz atrocty to keep mem alve n our memores as a people Htler sought permanently to erase from the earth. Thrd, t recognzes the profound dangers of racal hatred. " X *>\4»*~B Aprl 10, News and Revews ;^;^>»^S^:ra?am«SG^^ Despte naccessablty, Kenneth Branagh's 'Hamlet' s worthwhle by Chrstan Bladt Opnon Edtor It s perhaps one of the greatest shames of the cnematc world n recent years that most of you cannot" get to see Kenneth Branagh's "Hamlet." Not n the sense that most people are turned off by Shakespeare or 4 hour long flms, much less the combnaton of the two. No, the great shame s that the flm, whch opened on Chrstmas day, s stll only playng at one theater n the area: The Sony Pars at 58th and 5th n Manhattan. Sure, the flm wll eventually fnd ts way onto vdeo, whch wll make t less of an endurance test, but the flm wll lose so much when t s transferred to vdeo. Ths s the case wth any move, but, Branagh makes ample usage of ms flm's 70mm flm process. (Most flms are 35mm, so there wll naturally be twce as much of each mage lost). Perhaps ths s because of me two aforementoned reasons why t the flm s not expected to have much manstream appeal, and, thus, the flm has not been wdely released. Whatever the case t, t truly s a shame, as Branagh's flm s an extraordnary work of art. Branagh should be commended for the mere concept of the flm, whch s the complete unabrdged text of the tragedy of me Prnce of Denmark. Of course, the real commendaton should be gven because he has made a truly magnfcent flm. There are numerous reasons for ths, not the least of whch s Branagh's own performance as the ttle character. He conveys Hamlet's emotonal roller coaster n a style that s " --V IV, I I J J AM H,-> k';f>f/ v Vll.j' S WSTIWWW Photo Courtesy of Castle Rock Entertanment Prnce Hamlet (Kenneth Branagh) looks on durng the celebraton of the weddng of hs mother to hs father's brother. remarkably honest. Branagh very capably nteracts wth both of these characters n such a way that Shakespeare hmself would have been pleased. But, t s not Branagh's role as an actor n ths flm that s solely responsble for makng ths flm so wonderful. Hs work behnd the camera s just as astonshng. The flm uses some wonderful pcturesque outdoor shots that are outstandng on the bg screen. When Hamlet s frst confronted wth the ghost of hs father, t s truly a mystcal experence. The screen s shrouded n mst, the ground shakes, seemngly n an attempt to engulf Hamlet. The ghost's voce s electroncally modulated and amplfed so much that I could not help but be startled as he commands Hamlet to "Swear!" that he wll avenge hs death. There are also several scenes that take place n the man throne room where there are a multtude of extras n the background. The room s just so vsually strkng that t would be nterestng even wthout the massve crowd, or the enormous confett that pours from the celng to celebrate the weddng of Gertrude and Claudus.... [. v.;-;.."/ ;:..,., One. of the; most;compellng. moments, of the flm occurs whle Claudus s n the confessonal. Unbeknownst to hm, Hamlet places hs sword to wthn an nch of hs uncle's head, as he contemplates kllng hm then and mere. The tenson n ths scene s.far more pulse- ; poundng than anythng that I have seen n any of the bg blockbuster thrllers of recent memory, Branagh also makes some ntrgung choces wth hs movement of the camera. There s a scene n the early part of the flm where Claudus s professng hs love for Gertrude where Hamlet s postoned drectly n between them, provdng the obvous symbolsm of Hamlet's dssatsfacton wth the recent events n hs own famly. He wonderfully pans n a crcular moton through all of the characters n a scene, showng us each of them several tmes. These shots are so wonderfully choreographed, and he actually manages to get to close-ups of characters n such a way that t s relevant to the dalogue beng spoken. There are also some nterestng flashback sequences that show us ncdents that have tradtonally only been referred to n Shakespeare's text. The audence sees just what knd of relatonshp Hamlet and Ophela had. There s also a flashback to Claudus's posonng of Hamlet's father, as he lay n hs garden. I was glad to see that he chose to show these thngs, as I've always been rather nterested n the deas that ths ghose could have led to Hamlet, or that Ophela may have msnterpreted Hamlet's ntentons towards her. Branagh's work all falls wonderfully nto place, but t would, have, all been for naught f; the rest of the cast had been poorly" selected. Fortunately, ths. flm has one of the fnest casts to ever assembled for a Shakespearean flm. The cast s wonderful, despte the unfortunate ncluson of Gerard Depardeu. Derek Jacob s far better suted for the role of Claudus now than he was for the ttle role durng the 70s. Charlton Heston's.penchant for overactng has never been as delcously approprate as for the role of the kng n "The Mousetrap"; the play wthn the play Hamlet uses to determne Claudus's gult. Even Jack Lemmon, who may seem lke an unlkely choce for Shakespeare, capably portrays Marcellus, one of the nght watchmen who frst see the ghost of Hamlet's father. The ghost hmself s portrayed by the wonderful Bran Blessed, whom.some of you may recall from "Flash Gordon". In addton to all of the aforementoned talent, there s the manacally evl Prnce Fortnbras, played by Rufus Sewell. But, the surprsng stand-out performance n ths flm s Kate Wnslet, as a confused and tortured Ophela. She domnates every scene that she s n, partcularly after the death of her father. There s an awkward ntensty to the relatonshp between Ophela and her brother, and a dsturbng abusve relatonshp between her and her father, Polonus. Ths was the frst producton New of Hamlet that I have ever seen where I actually dentfed wth Ophela, partcularly as Hamlet yells at her, pontng her n the drecton of the nearest nunnery. Wnslet's portrayal of her nsanty s the fnest that I have ever seen. Ths Ophela s truly a troubled young woman, whose death s touchng and most tragc. That s part of any Shakespearean tragedy, partcularly ths, the greatest of them all. Everythng that happens n the play s unbelevably tragc, manly because t could all have been avoded. There are a number of mnor decsons made by multple characters that would have prevented so much carnage. But, the pont s that t dd not. Because of character flaws such as Claudus's greed, Hamlet's nacton, or Polonus's nablty to mnd hs own busness, the tale of Hamlet s a truly tragc account of one ncdent leadng to the death of the entre royal famly. Wllam Shakespeare wrote ths wonderful story nearly 500 years ago, and Kenneth Branagh s now the frst person to take the entre play and transform t nto a wonderful cnematc experence. Baseball ptcher Mark Barron earned NEC Player of the Week honors for the second tme n three selectons wth a current. ERA of Although Marst sports had a great weekend and ths was the place to be wth such nce weather as a spectator, I want to touch on a dfferent pont. Wth the weather beng so nce recently, and the upcomng Masters tournament at Augusta ths upcomng weekend, my thoughts have turned to the wonderful sport of golf. Wth golf ganng such popularty n the Unted States, even before sensaton Tger Woods emerged onto the scene, I am surprsed Marst College does not have a golf program. To start off, the program could begn as a club to buld nterest and sup- port. Once the program was establshed, t could advance to the Dvson I level. What's great about startng a golf program s that both men and women can play so that NCAA gender equty rules can be met. Ths would also keep the amount of men's and women's teams at an equal level. It s a shame that there s no golf program here at Marst due to our deal locaton. Marst s surrounded by some great golf courses. There are short courses such as Whsperng Pnes just across Route 9 along wth College Hll. Other longer courses n the nearby vcnty nclude Vassar golf course, James Bard State Park, and the McCann Memoral golf course just south on Route 9. There are also many other courses n the area that could be utlzed. Of course there are gong to be costs connected to startng and mantanng a team but ths could be overcome. I'm sure that a deal could be worked out wth the McCann foundaton that runs the McCann course so that the team could practce and maybe hold home matches there. Wth all the courses n the area I doubt there would be a problem wth fndng a course to play at. The players on the team would have there own equpment. Maybe balls, bags, and shoes could be provded through sponsorshp. Fndng a coach would probably,-; be the easest task snce so many people n the area play the sport. The bggest problem wth the coach s the he/she would not have an offce n McCann. I'm sure ths could be worked out. Startng a golf program would be nothng but benefcal for the school and athletc department. It would brng more local and natonal exposure to Marst College. Ths s a legtmate proposal that should be looked nto for the near future. The potent Marlns offense led by Sheffeld and anchored by Bobby Bonlla should not be a problem, but Florda wll only go as far as ther ptchng wll take them.
