Tuesday, Aprl 16,1991 Vol. 8, No. 25 LU debate teams perform strongly at NDT natonals By BEN LaFROMBOS The performance of Lberty Unversty's debate teams at the Natonal Debate Tournament Aprl 5-7 was the best n LU hstory, cappng off a record-settng year and establshng a base to be one of next year's top teams. The members of the two varsty debate teams Mchael Hall, Sherry Smth, Tmothy Edwards, and Davd Kester partcpated n the NDT, progressng further than any Lberty team has n hstory. The team of Mke Hall and Sherry Smth won 11 ballots. Davd Kester and Tmothy Edwards won 9 ballots. The most any Lberty team had won at the NDT n the past was seven ballots. The teams competed well but dd not acheve ther goal of makng the elmnaton rounds, whch requred Playng around 13 ballots. "We were n competton all the way to round seven, whch s good," Brett O'Donnell, the debate team coach, sad. "The teams debated the best they could have; we just ddn't get the breaks to fall our way." The real beneft of the NDT wll be seen n future years. "We proved to people that n the next couple of years they are gong to have to contend wth us," Edwards sad. "Next photo by Jeffrey A. "We have a shot at beng two of the top teams n the naton," O'Donnell sad. "There won't be a team out there that we won't be able to compete wth." Currently, the varsty teams are a "short dstance from the best of the best," O'Donnell sad. "Attrton and maturty wll dsplace the small gap," he contnued. "The NDT was a great learnng experence," Edwards sad. "t renforced that our varsty program s really gettng off the ground." The team also receved encouragement from other coaches and judges. "Three or four judges came to Mke (Hall) and me and complmented us on our debatng and sad that they expect a lot out of us," Edwards sad. "They could see LU s at the turnng pont." "Our varsty teams have progressed. These guys are gong to be n lne to do very, very well next year," O'Donnell sad. The Lberty debate team has matured quckly. The George Mason coach told Edwards t took hm 12 years to get hs program to the level that Lberty has reached after three years. The return of three varsty debaters wll boost the program. The only person leavng the team s Sherry Smth. "'m sorry to see Sherry go. She s a pcture of what Lberty debate s all about," O'Donnell commented. Smth started debate wth no experence and fnshed as a member of the top varsty team. Sherry Smth Senate fnshes church debate By DOUGLAS R. DEMPSEY Campus News Edtor The student senate dscussed three blls durng ts recent meetng. Also, t settled the bll regardng mandatory church attendance at Thomas Road Baptst Church by passng a resoluton whch would allow all but freshmen students to attend the church of ther choce. Sen. Erk Larson began the dscusson of the church bll, sponsored last week by Sen. Scott DeBoer, by explanng hs opposton. "t was suggested last week that my poston, and that of others, was based upon denomnatonal prejudce," Larson sad. 'That sn't the case, however. We were votng based upon what we thought was rght." n last week's meetng, Larson sad that students who were not Baptst and dd not want to attend a Baptst church should go to schools of that denomnatonal preference. The church bll was brought before the senate a second tme because a call to reconsder the bll had been made. DeBoer added two amendments to the bll before a fnal vote. The frst amendment asked the LU admnstraton to provde students wth a lst of approved churches so that students can make nformed decsons on where to attend. The second amendment was a suggeston for the Chrstan Servce Offce to publsh a pamphlet explanng to students how they should choose a church. See Senate, Page 6 Wayne Watson brngs tour to LU By CURT W.OLSON News Edtor Chrstan snger, songwrter Wayne Watson brngs hs "Home Free" Tour to Lberty Unversty's Mult-Purpose Center Frday at 8 p.m. Watson has been a famlar and welcomed guest to LU n recent years as he has performed solo concerts and as a prelude to de mperals n He s recognzed for creatng songs from de depth of hs experences, and "Home Free" contnues ths trend. Watson dedcated the album to Sandra Krkham, the wfe of Watson's best frend, who ded after a long battle wth a termnal llness. "We prayed for Sandra and enlsted de prayers of those who never had de pleasure of knowng her. We beleved Sandra would walk away from her hosptal bed, beleved and hoped for t," Watson sad. He contnued, "God answered our prayer, just not lke we'd hoped; but stll, He answered. The best thng we learn from losng our frend s to let God be God! Even when t makes no sense. Even when t makes you angry." One of de 10 number-one sngles Watson has released s "When God's People Pray," from de "Home Free" album. The song was wrtten durng de moments when Krkham was gettng better, just before she quckly worsened and ded. "Ths song llustrates one of de conclusons 've come to n my lfe," Watson sad, "dat prayer doesn't change anydng. The Hearer of our prayers changes thngs. thnk sometmes we beleve that our words manpulate God nto acton. They don't. They can enlst the help of de Lord, andteydo." Watson also dscussed ssues on de album lke de new freedoms of people n de Eastern Bloc, de tlngs n lfe controlled by God and the damage caused by gossp. He also ncluded a love song for hs wfe. He also ventured nto new terrtory wt de prase song "Almghty." "'ve never wrtten a prase song," Wason sad. "Muscally, really wanted to create a chorale-orented pece. The lyrc was actually formulated from Bble study." Watson s a veteran of Chrstan musc, startng n 1978 and releasng hsfrstalbum, "Workn' n de Fnal Hour," n He has released a total of eght albums, has receved numerous Dove awards and nomnatons and was nomnated for the "best male gospel performance" Grammy n 1987 for "Watercolour Pones." Furthermore, Watson s respected n de Chrstan musc ndustry as a spokesman on many topcs. He s a frequent edtoral contrbutor to Chrstan ndustry trade and consumer publcatons. Also, he s often a requested guest on Dr. James Dobson's "Focus on de Famly." Fnally, he was a partcpant along wt Petra and Km Boyce n Josh McDowell's "Why Wat?" campagn, whch combatted teenage pregnancy. Despte hs actvty n the musc busness and the lmelght he receves, Watson s a famly man. The fater of two sons sad, "My famly s my frst mnstry. 'm here to be de sprtual leader. My role s to try to gude the lves of my famly n a real, practcal and appled way every day." Tckets for de concert are $5 for general admsson and $7 for reserved seatng. From the unbellevable-but true-department: Lberty Unversty has been flooded wth calls from outraged parents and students concernng The Lberty Champon graduaton edtoral n our Aprl 4 ssue. The edtoral, whch stated among othertlngs, that Lberty would coordnate de overcrowded commencement parkng stuaton accordng to a newly establshed vehcle apprasal system, was a belated Aprl Fool's artcle that we felt was so outrageous, no one would beleve! We were wrong.. We apologze to and sympatze wth anyone who read ths artcle and decded that Lberty Unversty's dea of a commencement exercse was twsted, tasteless and offensve. 3 wmmm Page 2, The Lberty Champon opnon Edtoral "...Where the sprt of the Lord s, there s Lberty." Cornthans 3:17 Senors joyful, apprehensve about graduaton May s quckly approachng and wth t comes all de exctement and expectatons of graduaton and the senors' ensung step nto the real world. Resumes are beng sent out n a mad panc, ntervews are beng arranged and jobs are beng happly accepted by those who are leavng from the comfortng securty of Lberty Unversty. However, n the mdst of all the preparaton and exctement, one can't help notcng a touch of nostalga startng to unfold as de "bg day" draws closer. And, thngs wll only get worse before they get better. Mxed n wth all the exctement of startng the whole new lfe that we have been workng toward for four or fve (or sx) years s the realty that we are abruptly and rather traumatcally changng our entre way of lfe. No more avodng a.m. classes or schedulng classes only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Soon t wll be off to work every day at 8 or 9 a.m. And no makng up excuses to skp, ether. t's a harsh world out there no work, no pay. Furthermore, prospectve grads are facng the fact dat all of those close frendshps that have taken months and years to establsh wll soon be reduced to lttle more than fond memores and annual Chrstmas cards. The three-dmensonal world of water balloon fghts and late-nght conversatons s fast on ts way to becomng mmoblzed n the two-dmensonal world of a couple of snapshots and a yearbook. Fnally, there are the doubts. Dd four years of educaton really prepare us to face the challenges we wll soon be encounterng every day? Sure, we could make t at Lberty, but what about "out tere?" Have all those chapel speakers and Sunday servces become part of our frame of reference, or dd we merely st trough them, leavng ourselves defenseless aganst the struggles we wll soon be facng? Psychologsts report that graduatng from college s the thrd most stressful and traumatc event n a person's lfe, second only to marrage and the brth of a chld. Yes, there s a great deal to look forward to, but there s also a great deal to look back upon as well. These last few years have helped to shape our lves n a way that few other tlngs have. Besdes our parents and our churches, few thngs have mpacted us the way the people and events at Lberty have shaped and mpacted us. Remember when we thought t was great to yell to a frend across the crowded DeMoss hallway? Remember when stckng broccol n some grl's Det Coke was good for some laughs? Remember squealng n the hallway after hours because we had no classes or ddn't go to them? Remember the frst tme we left home after semester break and ddn't feel homesck? Remember the frst tme we realzed what we were gong to do wth our lves, and how good t felt? Remember that frst rude awakenng when we realzed that we were adults? Mxed n wth the joys and antcpatons of the approachng graduaton s a lttle apprehenson and just a touch of remorse. But we clng to the realty that God brought us from scared, homesck freshmen to strong young men and women of purpose, and He wll do so agan. Underclassmen, f you happen to spot someone who s full of exctement suddenly become quet and see hs eyes begn to get just a lttle msty, chances are you're watchng a senor dscoverng just how attached he really s to ths place he s dyng to leave. Take notes. Even though t seems lke forever untl you wll be marchng to the famlar tune of "Pomp and Crcumstance," those years whch stretch endlessly ahead of you now wll fade before you have the chance to fully apprecate them. But, don't worry, someday you wll apprecate them and someday you wll want them back. When at least eght to 10 words get through unnotced, there s somethng wrong. Wth the new move polcy n effect, students now have the choce to see unedted moves off campus. But for those of us who do not care to hear profanty, ths was a shock and an nsult. thought that the whole reason moves are shown on campus s to provde an alternatve to the world. realze that cursng s not the worst thng whch takes place n the move ndustry today; but when the name of my Lord and Savor s taken n van along wth other profanty at a move on campus, can't help but wonder f we are "darng to be dfferent" anymore. How can students be expected to lve above the world's standards f the admnstraton doesn't set the example? t s ther responsblty to make sure the standards of Lberty Unversty are upheld. Students are expected to be dfferent from the world, yet worldly actons are encouraged through the moves shown to them rght here on Lberty's campus. Ths s not only a reflecton on the admnstraton but on the unversty as a whole. We have therghtto expect a dfference at Lberty. After all, sn't that why we attend a Chrstan unversty n the frst place? Dwayne knew that ths was due to very low blood sugar because our roommate s dabetc. Dwayne has been hs roommate for two years and had been nstructed to seek professonal help f such a condton were to occur. Dwayne then called campus securty to nform them of the stuaton and to have them call for help. They told Dwayne to gve hm a drnk whch s hgh n sugar. Dwayne explaned to them that ths condton was beyond that pont and that he would not drnk. Ther response was that no one was avalable to respond at that tme and that Dwayne should try to feed hm orange juce anyway and then call them back. They also added the stpulaton that our RA must call them before they would respond. Dwayne then nstantly called 911. Our pont s that campus securty s very unprofessonal and ncompetent. Although t was not necessarly repeated n the March 26th Champon, the resoluton that was beng debated at the tme also requested that at least three recommendatons be requred on the Express Enrollment form as well as n the regular applcaton. Because of the lack of proof from people (pastors, educators, etc.) who would be able to ether confrm or dsprove what a prospectve student has wrtten on the Express Enrollment applcaton, there s no way to tell whether or not we, as a unversty, should allow that ndvdual to become a student at Lberty. Can we tell these people they should be dfferent f we are not?" Certanly not beleve the man ssue here s how holy our servce s to God. Holness means non-conformty to the world and beng transformed by the Sprt. Ths s what we should strve for (Ephesans 1:4, Peter 1:15-16). Andrew Wlls am The Lghter Sde Weght loss requres commttment, work As the temperature rses and advertsements for weght-loss programs prolferate, the thoughts of n^ many college students turn to summer swmmng sut season and smultaneously to losng weght, but most forget what s probably the most crtcal factor. Everyone knows that det, exercse or both are necessary to lose weght yet many overlook behavoral modfcaton. Smply put, behavoral modfcaton s changng the habts and atttudes that led to the weght gan. Ths factor can make or break your det. f you aren't truly commtted to losng weght or f you contnue to express your emotons through your eatng habts, you are unlkely to be successful. The concept of changng your atttudes n order to change your actons has a bblcal bass as well. Paul urged the Chrstan n Ephesans 4:22-24 to renew hmself sprtually by replacng hs old deas wth the new he fnds n Chrst* "You were taught, wth regard to your former way of lfe, to put off your old self, whch s beng corrupted by ts decetful desres; to be made new n the atttude of your mnds; and to put on the new self, created to be lke God n true rghteousness and holness." We need to apply ths concept n a smlar manner to our atttudes and habts toward food f we are each gong to shed our "old body" for a slmmer, healther new one. An mportant part of ths process s replacng one's old habts wth new, more healthful ones, such as reachng forapeceof frutrather than a cooke after lunch. How- DEBBE REECE Copy Edtor ever, f your 1 mndsprcocc u p e d throughout the day wth ' not eatng the cooke, you wll fnd t almost mpossble to avod the temptaton. Rather you should decde beforehand on a replacement thought for the cooke. Tell yourself, "Whenever thnk of that peanut-butter cooke, wll replace the thought wth the banana am gong to eat nstead." Thus, you can avod beng obsessed wth the thought of the cooke. Another aspect of behavoral modfcaton s to be commtted to makng the changes for a lfetme. f you keep thnkng of your det as somethng you wll only have to follow for a lttle whle untl you can return to your normal earng style, you wll not be successful. Accordng to health specalsts, the mark of a successful det s beng able to mantan the new weght Also, remember that retranng your thought and eatng patterns wll take tme. You are tryng to change habts and patterns that have been ngraned throughout your lfetme. The process wll seem as dffcult as tryng to retran yourself to wrte wth your left nstead of yourrghthand or vce versa. However, f you persst n changng your food habts along wth a sensble det and exercse program, you should be able not only to acheve your weght goal for ths summer but also be able to happly mantan your best weght for the rest of your lfe. (nformaton such as ths s avalable n the HUEC 390 class taught by Dr. Sandra Smons.) ^Moves Trp to park reveals true nature of Peaksvew study sessons t doesn't take long to realze that the most popular place for LU students to do ther homework on the weekend s not n our beloved lbrary but at the Lberty Unversty South Campus alas Peaksvew Park. Wth ths fact n mnd, decded would take a course there. After arrved on the premses, dscovered that the LU dress code had not made a pont of followng the students to the park. have never seen so much (or so lttle, for that matter) beachwear n all my lfe. can't blame anyone, though, because t was a really nce day to frolc n the warm weather; but surely we as students can fnd more to do n our spare tme than become engrossed n our homework as we soak up rays. 've always thought t would be fun to have an gloo party. n ths festvty, the partygoers try to "psych" everyone out by wearng ther mdwnter clothes and starng strangely at anyone n shorts or swmwear. t would be nterestng to see how TMOTHY HOLUNGSWORTH Staff Columnst many people run home to don ther own overcoats to jon the fun. Another dea s to have a "roll down the hll" party. Do you remember when you would toss yourself down a hll as a youngster only to fnd that when you reached the bottom and all of the tumblng s over you want to get up and do the whole blasted thng over agan? Well, just thnk how much more fun t would be f we were able to get the entre campus to roll down the bg hll at Peaksvew at the same tme. Just grab onto a major lmb of your neghbor, as we bound down the hll screamng, "As you wsh!!!" Of course, we would have to temporarly move Health Servces, but that comes wth the terrtory. Another great event would be the Frst Annual Lberty Unversty Woodstock Memoral Festval. Every student would spend the weekend strollng around the vcnty actng as f he does not have a bran n hs head. Of course, because of a few mnor restrctons outlned n the Lberty Way, we would have to replace Peter, Paul and Mary wth the Bll Gather Tro, but that's all rght Hp-huggers and bell bottoms wll be requred dress for the occason, even though a certan group of our student body has already tred to ntate the trend. From what saw last Sunday n the park, these clothng restrctons may be a lttle too bndng on those people who should realze they are attendng a dstnctly Chrstan unversty. Gettng dressed has never hurt anyone. n the end, we must all admt that a day n the park can be peaceful and relaxng, but the faces of those people who play smash ball n ther bkns should be red from more than just a sunburn. 6 , Aprl 16,1991 news LBC alumnus fnds success n wrtng and mnsterng BEN LaFROMBOS Youth mnster, author and speaker Gary Hunt s a leader n contemporary youth mnstry. Hunt s best known at Lberty for the books he has co-wrtten wth hs wfe Angela. Survvng the Tweenage Years s used as a text n youth mnstrycassesatlberty.thecouple has also wrtten Now That You've Asked Her Out, Now That He's Asked You Out and Mom and Dad Don't Lve Together Anymore. Hunt s currently pastor of the mddle-school youth at Frst Baptst Church of ndan Rock n Largo, Fla., and a member of the board of drectors for the LU Center for Youth Mnstry. Survvng the Tweenage Years deals wth the age group Hunt sees as most consequental n developng a youth program. "f you don't have a good mddle-school mnstry, then you are just salvagng n hgh school," Hunt explaned. Hs desre to promote work wth the mddle-school age s based on the need for churches to develop a sold mddle-school program. "The tremendous need for mddle-school mnstry s somethng mnstres are pckng up on, especally n the last two to three years," Hunt sad. "The mddle-school age s moldable and open to the Gospel," he explaned. "t s a rough tme of lfe and a crtcal one for makng changes so that they'11 make t through mddle school happy," he sad. Hunt's mnstry as an author s ntended to "help and encourage youth workers and parents." The encouragement wll be needed n the future, accordng to Hunt. "We (youth mnsters) are gong to have to change as the culture changes. t s gong to get rougher and rougher out there," he explaned. Changng wth the culture s necessary to contnue reachng youth. "You don't have to compromse convctons to change wth culture," Hunt sad. "Look at what people are nto. Thngs that work n Calforna won't work n Florda." n addton, solaton can lead to a stale mnstry, Hunt sad. "Check out your (geographcal) area. See what kds enjoy. Rght now, t s sports wth the boys. Keep up wth what's gong The on wth lfe," Hunt suggested. Besdes keepng up wth the culture, Hunt sees youth mnstry as provdng frendshp for the youth. "The key to youth mnstry s that they know for sure that they are loved. They just need to know that they are cared about," Hunt sad. The Bble s the bass for servng the youth. "A lot of youth mnsters thnk all they need to have s good actvtes. There s a lack of good Bble teachng," Hunt explaned. "The key to lfe s very smple. t s rght there n the Bble." The carnage n youth mnstry today s evdenced n that a youth mnster's average stay s only 18 months and only 12 months for Southern Baptsts, Hunt sad. He descrbed ths record as "dsgustng." "t klls kds," he sad "t tears ther hearts out so that they don't trust anybody." Hs recommendaton for youth mnsters s twofold. "Youth mnsters should be grounded n the Word," Hunt explaned the mnster's greatest need. Also, he sad, "When you go out, make sure you go n wth the rght atttude of wantng to serve n the long-term," Hunt sad. LU phlosophy professor lectures n Sovet Unon By DAWN K. "The two thngs that 'll remember most are number one, the state of Russa," he sad. " told my students that Murphy's Law s n full effect over there. Anythng that can go wrong wll. Number two, the people's eagerness and ther openness to new thngs. Ther openness s very optmstc wth the state of de country." n addton to ther new openness, an atmosphere of depresson s evdent, accordng to Habermas. " dd see the bread lnes. There were long food lnes; and when they fnally got n, there was lttle or no food on the shelves. Moscow ht me as beng depressed and knd of dreary." Habermas also gave two lectures at a professonal conference of scence and relgon atnovofbrsk. He spoke on the resurrecton and the turn of western phlosophy aganst athesm. "There s no guarantee that once the student leaves campus he wll actually attend church," Trppett sad. "Untl that problem s addressed, don't thnk the bll wll pass the admnstraton." Several votes had to be taken on the bll because of confuson regardng proper senate procedure. Eventually, the resoluton was passed. 8 Tuesday, Aprl 16,1991 Flames Feedback sports The Baseball team wns Lberty Champon, Page 7 Mke Gathman Baseball team has gone from rags to rches The Lberty Unversty baseball team has won seven straght games and 15 of ts last 16 to mprove ts overall record to But one thng that has really mpressed me s how the team turned an average start nto one of the best baseball seasons ever by the Flames. The record s mpressve, but the season dd not start out so well. The team has turned t on and really played excellent baseball the last few weeks. On Saturday, March 23, the baseball team lost 9-3 to West Chester Unversty on a cold, wet day that was not sutable for baseball. was at the game, and 1 could see that the team just wanted to get that game over wth. At the tme the team was strugglng wth an 8-8 record and was not playng as well as or anybody else thought t could play. On March 25 t was lke the team had just receved a new lease on lfe. The prevous Saturday had been forgotten, and t was tme to start playng ball. A new season had begun mentally. That day the Hames won 13-0 aganst Frankln Perce. thnk ths wn gave the Flames a much needed boost n ther confdence. Thngs were not gong well, and they just needed to blow somebody out to vent ther frustratons. Ths wn was the turnng pont and proved to be the frst of eght consecutve wns for the Flames. After that thngs just started to fall nto place. On March 26 the Flames swept a doubleheader from Appalachan State, 4-1 and 4-3. The Flames receved excellent ptchng n both games, and wnnng a close game s one of the bggest confdence bulders there s. On March 27 the Flames played West Chester for the second tme and ths tme swept a doubleheader, 12-1 and 6-4. LU showed West Chester ts true colors durng these two games. Ths was ther ffth straght wn (n three days) snce losng to West Chester March 23. The Flames' wnnng streak clmaxed Aprl 1 when the team swept a doubleheader from Campbell Unversty for ts seventh and eghth consecutve wns. All eght wns were at home. Could the Flames wn on the road? On Aprl 2 the Flames traveled to JMU and had ther streak snapped wth a 9-2 loss. After ths loss LU's record was The Flames returned home two days later and promptly began another wnnng streak by defeatng Vrgna Mltary nsttute, 8-2. Durng ther current wnnng streak whch has reached seven games, the Flames have shown some good sgns. Frst of all, they pcked up two road wns at Marshall and at VM. And second, they won two close games aganst good teams by defeatng George Mason, 5-3, and Old Domnon, 4-3. The Flames have a new feelng n the dugout. They have confdence that they can wn every game. Much of the credt for ths new sprt has to be gven to frst-year skpper Johnny Hunton. He has stepped n and turned last year's.500 team nto a very compettve ball club n lttle tme. The ptchers have been keepng the Flames n ball games, and the htters have kept up a balanced attack. Ths wnnng streak has been a total team effort. Nne dfferent ptchers have chpped n to combne for the 15 wns n the last 16 games. The team earned run average s a combned The team battng average s.313 for the season. Ths s awesome! The Flames have fve regulars that are battng over.300 so far. Overall, the Flames have an exctng, young team that s headed tothetop. Theyhavealotofablty and talent. Hunton has lfted them tothenextlevelofplay. lean only hope that when the season s over they wll be recognzed for ther late-season surge wth a trp to the NCAA tournament. seventh straght after 17-ht performance By MKE GATHMAN The Lberty Unversty baseball team won ts seventh consecutve game wth a 14-4 trouncng of Vrgna Mltary nsttute on the road Thursday. The Flames offense was led by frstbaseman Bream, who had two hts and scored two runs. Robbns collected the only extra base ht of the game for the Flames whch was an RB trple. The Flames also turned n four double plays n the vctory aganst Marshall. The loss dropped Marshall's season record to On Tuesday, the Flames played at home aganst George Mason Unversty and won the game 5-3, on Bll Speek's two-run homer n the ffth nnng. Lberty ptcher Krs Morton ptched seven nnngs, allowng two runs on eght hts whle strkng out seven. Chrs Wck ptched the fnal two nnngs, gvng up one run on two hts whle strkng out three. Brady collected three hts, ncludng two doubles, to spark the Flames offense. Robbns and Speek each chpped n two hts, ncludng Speek's homer whch broke a 1-1 te. The Hames never relnqushed the lead after Speek's homer. The wn mproved Morton's record to a perfect 4-0 for the season. The save was Wck's team-leadng second. Horton; but on May 9 Horton wll try to push hs tolerance of pan to a new level as he begns the journey of a lfetme. By the end of ths summer, Horton hopes to be n the record books. He wants to hke the Appalachan Tral n less than 60 and 1/2 days. Ths s no easy task. The Appalachan Tral begns n Sprnger Mountan, Ga., and stretches to Mount Katahdn n Mane. The total length of the tral s more than 2,144 mles and covers 14 states. n the past Horton has had plenty of experence wth pan. He has competed as an ultramarathoner for more than 13 years. Durng that tme he has won the Old Domnon 100 mler three tmes, the Groundhog 50 mler four tmes and the JFK 50 mler once. Hs career as an ultramarathoner has ncluded 64 ultras of whch he fnshed 58 and won 28. But all of those races are mnuscule compared to hs newest challenge. "Ths Appalachan Tral adventure has been a dream of mne for fve years," Horton sad. Most challenges have drawbacks, and Horton's adventure s full of obstacles whch ncrease the task: Durng the average year approxmately 1,200 people attempt to conquer the Appalachan Tral. Usually only 150 succeed n ther hkng expedton. Durng hs trek through the mountans, Horton wll have to carry a 17-pound backpack. "Seventeen s pounds does not seem lke much but try hkng wth t for a whle," he sad. Hs det wll be a steady supply of MRE's (meals ready to eat) the same food gven to combat solders. Horton has plotted hs course methodcally. On certan days he wll stop at a desgnated post offce to mal hs food to the area where he wll be the next day.
