Vrgna Baptst Hosptal was chosen as the startng pont for the demonstraton because the hosptal performs abortons. II Cornthans 3:17 Defct reducton needs to begn wth legslators The song and dance of poltcan neptness n fndng a soluton to the budget defct s gettng old. The same thng happens every year, a whole lot of talk about our budget woes, but no acton. The problem ths year s stll the same because Congress s unwllng to make the tough decsons to elmnate government waste. In ths era of savngs and loan scandals, skyrocketng ol prces and congressonal pay rases, we would thnk our poltcans had learned the lesson of wse spendng. Au contrare, beloved Amercans. For more than fve months, Presdent Bush and congressonal leaders dragged ther feet. They actually had us belevng they really cared about the economc stablty and economc future of the Unted States. Bush called congressonal leaders together wth Bush Admnstraton budget leaders n early May to fnd a soluton to de escalatng defct. The real problem, however, was never dscussed. The problem s not defcts; t s wasteful spendng. Danel J. Mtchell of the Hertage Foundaton, a conservatve thnk tank, sad, "Defcts are not the ssue; the real ssue s excessve government spendng. By allowng ts attenton to focus on the defct, the (Bush) admnstraton s treatng the symptom and not the dsease." Prme examples of ths knd of spendng nclude: a $107,000 grant to study sexual habts of Japanese qual. The study oddly enough found that male quals preferred female quals over other males or even ducks. (Say t an't so!) Also, the Congress allocated $2,500 to study rudeness, lyng and cheatng n tenns; $84,000 to study why people fall n love; and $500,000 to buld a 10-story replca of the Great Pyramd of Cheops n Bedford, Ind. These are just a few of the wacky proposals put nto de annual federal budget by our "representatves." In the meantme, the summt went nowhere as both sdes bckered over tax ncreases and de captal gans tax. Numerous Democrats wanted a tax ncrease, whch de average Amercan already knew. But mey spnelessly faled to call for t untl the presdent reneged on hs campagn promse: "Read my lps, no new taxes." Currently, the Congress and the presdent are strugglng to reach a budget agreement whch wll cut de defct by $500 bllon durng the next fve years. There s a blzzard of proposed budgets, askng for everythng from gas taxes to a reducton n Medcare to a tax on the wealdy to pay for the problem. But no one has proposed slashng the fundng of dotc deas lke a study of matng preferences of Japanese quals. Whle some senators and representatves reject a budget package because of tax ncreases, oders reject t on the grounds that t would make a nasty 30-second campagn commercal for a challenger wth electons less than a mond away. "Well, there they go agan." In other words, whle the U.S. mantans a $3 trllon debt, our "leaders" are more concerned about whether or not they wll lve n Washngton, D.C. come January However, whle the true-blue, red-blooded, nsde-te- Beltway poltcans haggle over the budget, provde no concrete answers, and further avod the real ssue, the Amercan taxpayer controls the only vable soluton: Vote the bums out of offce on Nov. 6. In conjuncton wth our "Throw-the-Bums-Out Campagn," The Champon suggests sendng tea bags to all elected offcals at the federal, state and local level. The Boston Tea Party sgnfed the only way the colonsts could get ther message across to Kng George durng the revoluton. I lved on campus for three years, and I was expected to be at church, chapel and make curfew at a specfc tme. Not long ago, n chapel, Dr. Falwell announced that the back entrance to campus would be open from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. I am a student who lves off-campus and I use Rt. 29. On Oct. 1,1990, at 6:45 p.m., a securty guard was closng the back entrance, and I was unable to use t. I asked hm why he was closng t 15 mnutes early. He stated that t was to beclosed"around7p.m." Ths seemed odd to me because 15 mnutes s not "around 7 p.m.;" t s just plan early. The fact that the entrance was closed early s mmateral. Securty s vtal to our campus, and the students need to respect our securty offcers, but n turn, securty needs to be examples to the students. If a dorm student comes on campus at 12:15 a.m., securty s gong to wrte hm up because curfew s 12 a.m., not "around 12 a.m." The atttudes on campus are very negatve toward securty, and these are the knds of ncdents that help cause these atttudes. By BRIAN TUMULTY and ANNE SAKER USA Today wre servce WASHINGTON - Much of the struggle over the fscal 1991 budget centers on a poltcal and economc ssue as old as the republc: Should the rch pay more n taxes? The queston has taken on new urgency as the economy slows nto recesson after 93 months of growth, mammoth government blls come due and the mood of voters turns ugly. Whle the many alternatve budget plans floatng around all am to cut the defct $500 bllon n fve years, nearly all the proposals nclude hgher taxes for the wealthest Amercans. Recent polls ndcate that Amercans are nclned toward rasng tax rates for the rch, who benefted most n the boom tmes of the 1980s. The rchest 5 percent of Amercans enjoyed a 46.1 percent ncrease n ts ncome, after nflaton, durng the 1980s, accordng to an analyss by the House Ways and Means Commttee. But ts effectve federal tax rate the percentage of famly ncome pad n taxes dropped 9.5 percent durng the decade. Ths group earned an average of $206,162 n 1980 before taxes. Meanwhle, the poorest 20 percent suffered a 3.2 percent decrease n ts nflaton-adjusted ncome durng the 1980s, but the effectve tax rate of those Amercans actually ncreased by 16.1 percent. Ths group made an average of $7,725 n 1990 before taxes. But lookng at the past decade another way, t can be argued that the rch are bearng more than ther far share of the tax burden. The same 5 percent at the top of the ncome scale account for 26.2 percent of ncome earned by all households, but ths group pays 30.4 percent of the taxes. What's more, ts share of the tax burden has gone up 3.3 percent n the past decade. Meanwhle, the poorest 20 percent, wth 3.7 percent of all household ncome, pays just 1.6 percent of the taxes. Those n between the mddle class, earn 70 percent of the ncome and pay 68 percent of the taxes. Analysts, economsts, poltcans, statstcans and anyone who has money debate the meanng of those and other fgures. For economst Lawrence Mshel of the Economc Polcy Insttute, the tax rales are not the only sgnfcant ssue. These cuts were nevtable anyway, because of the changes n the Sovet Unon. However, these cutbacks meant tax hkes, whch unfortunately ht the poor and lower mddle class hardest. There were other flaws n the plan, such as nadequate spendng cuts, tax breaks for small busnesses and a bad decson toput Socal Securty outsde Gramm-Rudman spendng lmts (a measure that would cut unnecessary programs n the event of government debt). Overall, the plan was the best t could be. In poltcal terms the plan's bggest flaw was ts perceved falure to dstrbute the burden equally. The Oct. 15, 1990, ssue of Newsweek descrbed de plan: "On balance, the plan was worth havng, but de balance was mghty close." People often wonder how any naton canfndtself n such great fnancal turmol. Well, the government and the people have dfferent opnons of how a country can become so ndebted. The government beleves that the defcts have endured because fjey reflect a sold and stable poltcal consensus; that s, Amercans desre more government than they are wllng to pay for. The people feel that the government expects them to pay for de government's rresponsblty. Congress s n the process of developng a new, budget plan. However, t s dffcult to sell a defct reducton plan wth no mmedate economc advantages. Even wuout nstant economc benefts, de large defct dreatens to harm future lvng standards by crowdng out prvate nvestment. The rejecton of de $500-bllon, defct-reducuon plan trggered a partal government shutdown and left thousands of federal employees jobless. However, federal employees are not de only ones sufferng. Every day busness people are also losng ther jobs. Snce July, the Unted States has lost nearly 500,000 jobs. As reported by the Oct. 15, 1990 ssue of Tme magazne, Chase Manhattan, the second largest U.S. bank, slettng5,000employeesgo. McDonnell Douglas, the number-one defense contractor, s cuttng back 17,000 workers. Ths does not begn to descrbe de magntude of the problem. "At a tme lke ths, consumers and nvestors seek sgns that people n "No naton can do busness the way the Federal Government has... and survve." G. Bush How annoyng charge are dong de rght thng. But they have gotten precous lttle reassurance from Washngton," the Tme artcle reported. Many U.S. companes and consumers are becomng very uncertan because of the rapdly weakenng economy. Some beleve that t all bols down to the fght between Republcans and Democrats. The Democrats want to tax de rch to death and the Republcans do not. Whle Congress s searchng for an deal soluton, the problem wll contnue to worsen. The Bush admnstraton expects de annual defct to reach $293.7 bllon durng 1991, nearly double what t was each year from 1987 to If Gramm-Rudman kcks n, Pentagon spendng would fall a total of $67 bllon durng de frst three years, not ncludng the cost of the Persan Gulf operaton. Many people who are not drectly affected by the dstraught economy are not worred, but tey should be. Reductons wll occur n a varety of spendng programs whch wll affect everyone. For example, guaranteed student loans wll be cut by $2 bllon. In hs publc address, Bush warned dat "no naton can contnue to do busness de way de Federal Government has been operatng and survve." Thus Congress had better compromse and come up wd a workable soluton, before t s too late. Lfe's lttle problems cause bg traumas As my roommate and I sat dscussng envronmental ssues over hot tea and Cheetos, I realzed dal crunchy cheese snacks are by desgn annoyng n themselves. Unless you consume dem wth surgcal forceps or smply cram de whole bag n your mouth, you'll be left wd a greasy, grtty cheese resdue all over your fngers. Though small n magntude, t s often tcse unobtrusve, nsgnfcant tems that can creep under your skn and enrage you to murderous fervor. Take przes n a box of cereal for example. Have you ever opened a box of Lucky Charms and found your travel sze Clearasl sample rght on top of de pre-sweetened snack? "No," you say. That's what I thought. You ether have to snake your hand nto de very bottom of the box, eat 16 bowls of cereal or be clever and open de bottom of de box frst. If you do dat, you dscover you have purchased de frst box wth a prze on de lop. PRICE Comedy team, "Solders Agan" hghlght homecomng weekend Lynchburg's WSET-TV Channel 13 recently donated ts old news set to LU's televson-rado (TVR) program. WSET-TV planned to nstall a new set n ts studo and to destroy ts old news set. Student newscasts provde practcal experence for the telecommuncatons majors. "We want to expand the news area so that students can develop ther sklls," Dr. Carl Wndsor, charman of the telecommuncatons department, sad. Obtanng the news set s one step n the plan to expand the TVR program to a low-power televson staton. "Broadcastng on Channel 18 should begn n December," Wndsor sad. "We plan to have daly televson newscasts for the local Lynchburg area on ths staton." "The new set provdes a decent backdrop and an envronment that works for the students," Troxel sad. "When you gve our students somethng to work wth, they surprse everyone wth the qualty of the work they can produce, and they have proven t to us tme and tme agan." The campus staton, Channel 9, broadcasts the news four nghts a week at 5:30 p.m. Presently, the length of the broadcast s 10 mnutes on Monday and Thursday evenng and fve mnutes on Tuesday and Wednesday evenng. DEMPSEY A double dose of entertanment s scheduled for homecomng weekend as the comedy team Hcks and Cohagen and the "Solders Agan" tour, featurng Dallas Holm, Tm Sheppard, and Phl Johnson, come to campus for concerts. The dea for a tour wth the three ndvdual sngers orgnated n 1981 when they recorded ther frst album together. The success of the album brought requests lor a tour. However, because of schedule conflcts, the tour never materalzed. Now, nne years later, Holm, Sheppard and Johnson have released a second album. Ths tme, they have been able to coordnate ther schedules, and a mn-tour wth only 10 stops was put together. Holm has been recordng for more than 20 years. Hs latest album, "Through the Flame," was released durng the summer. Holm s best known for hs award-wnnng song "Rse Agan." Sheppard found success as a wrter before makng hs mark as a recordng artst. Hs latest release, "1 Am Determned," hasproduccd three top- 10 sngles so far. Johnson has not only been a successful snger and songwrter, but he has also done well as a producer. Included n hs producng credts are several of Dallas Holm's albums. The dea for a second album by the three sngers came almost as a joke. Johnson was talkng to Neal Joseph, vce-presdent at Word, Inc., when the dea came up. "Neal lked the dea and began to research the success of the frst album. When he realzed how well t (the frst album) dd, he got really excted about the dea for a second album." After completng the album, the three knew a tour was nevtable. "We'll do about 10 dates, and that's pretty much all our schedules wll allow," Holm explaned. Although a veteran of 20 years n the musc ndustry, Holm approachs lourng wth a bt of apprehenson. "It's a lttle bt scary because n a studo you can always go back and fx somethng that sn't rght," Holm sad, "but to stand up on stage and just go through everythng all alonce s knd of scary to all of us." Tckets for the concert are avalable at the DeMoss tcket wndow. Prces are $5 for general admsson, $6 for reserved, and $4 for LU students wth school dentfcaton. 9 Page 8, The Champon homecomng '90 Tuesday, LU vs Notre Dame? We're on our way By KEVIN M. BLOYE Edtor From the frst season n 1973, LU chancellor Jerry Falwcll shared ths outrageous vson that had hs team of Bblc-totng Baptsts battlng the Notre Dame Fghtng Irsh on the grdron. The Baptsts aganst the Catholcs. The preachers vs.the prests. A grdron match made n Heaven. Falwell's mere menton of ths vson would vrtually guarantee goodnatured laughter from any large gatherng. Nothng lke a few chuckles to loosen" an audence before a sermon or speech. That was Seventeen years later, Falwell contnues to share hs vson wth the same fervor and sncerty; but nobody s laughng anymore. The samecollege that played aganst junorvarstesand prep teams n 1973 s now on the verge of becomng an annual powerhouse on the Dvson 1-AA level. In the bg busness of college football t t doesn't seem possble that a program started n a small town n Central Vrgna could make a natonal mpact so quckly. "Even n 1973 when we had no facltes, and we were playng aganst prep schools, we envsoned havng a bonafdc college football program," Falwcll sad. But s Falwcll serous about Notre Dame? "The challenge s there," Falwcll proclamed. "All they (Notre Dame) have to do s accept." Seventeen years ago when the school was known as Lynchburg Baptst College and classes were held at Thomas Road Baptst Church, former U.S. Naval Academy Offcer Lee "Rock" Roycrcame to Lynchburg to coach the new LBC football program. After postng a modest 3-3 record n the naugural season aganst prep schools and junor varstes, Royer ded tragcally n a plane crash on Nov. 20, Despte such a short tenureatlbc, Falwell beleves Royer's sprtual contrbutons to the program has carred over to today. "Rock Royer was God's man for the hour when we started the football program," Falwell sad. "He took Phl. 4:13 as a foundaton to buld on and that verse s stll our focus n 1990." John Cartwrght, an assstant to Royer, took over the team n 1974 and led them through ts frst complete varsty schedule n He Flames Coaches was prmarly responsble for movng 's program up to the NAIA level after the Flames' frst wnnng season (5-4) at the varsty level n Cartwrght left the team after the 1977 season to become a pastor n de Phladelpha area, and 's wnnngest coach, Tom Dowlng assumed the helm for the next seven seasons. It was durng Dowlng's regn that Baptst College began makng a small mprnt on the world of college football. *In 1977 runnng back Km Raynor and offensve lneman Scott Goctz became LBC's frst football All- Amercans. *In 1979 LBC posted a record and tght end Steve Kcarns was drafted by the Brtsh Columba Lons becomng the frst Flame to play at the professonal level. *In 1980 played ts frst Dvson 1-AA opponent James Madson, and lost *On Nov. 8, 1980, won ts frst game aganst a Dvson 1-AA opponent, beatng Morehcad State, *On Oct. 24,1981, played ts frst Dvson 1-A opponent Furman, and lost After Dowlng's departure n 1983, former Rchmond assstant coach Morgan Houl assumed leadershp of the LBC program. In 1988 the last year of Houl's l vcycartcnurc, Unversty moved to the Dvson 1-AA level and put together a sold 8-3 season. On Dec. 18, 1988, former Cleveland Browns coach and NFL Coach of de Year Sam Rulgl ano was named as 's head coach. Several months before, Falwcll had met me fery Brooklyn natve at a conventon where Rutglano was promotng hs sprtually based autobography Pressure. "I knew de second I met hm that I wanted hm to be my football coach someday, "Falwcll admtted recently. In Rulglano's frst season at LU, de Flames narrowly mssed ther frstever playoff berth fnshng at 7-3. Not only dd Rutglano have an mpact on the feld, hs presence gave the Flames constant natonal exposure: just what ncceds to even entertan the thought of a Notre Dame match-up. "Ourprogram last year jumped from a 1 nc tem n the Sunday box scores to a natoanally rccogn/.cd program," Falwcll sad. "Sam Rutglano has worked mracles n gettng us natonal exposure." Oct. 23,1990 Why play football at all? by Jerry Falwell There arc many parallels between football and a vtal Chrstanty. Football s acton. Football s contact. It s nvolvement and partcpaton. Football requres dscplne, tranng and much concentraton. Ths sport requres courage and plan old grt. Sometmes you gel hurl playng the game. Sometmes you lose. Many tmes, you fnd yourself lyng on the ground lookng up. Oftentmes, when de game s over, you arc brused, beaten and you ache for several days. Football also nvolves people. The object of de game s to wn. Consstency s a very mportant ngredent. There arc many spectators observng every move and play. When the game s over, there s no replay or second chance. Any Chrstan can read these frst two paragraphs and sec the beautful analogy of de game of football wth the Chrstan lfe. These arc some of the reasons why we beleve such an athletc program at Lynchburg Baptst College s good. Our young people arc Chrstans who need to learn all the lessons ths great game has to teach. Whle dcy arc learnng and playng the game, there arc many opportuntes to wtness for Chrst. Wc arc excted about the prospects of our football team for ms year and the years ahead. Most of all, wc want to glorfy the Lord n everythng wc do. Wc surely want to wn - but more mportant - s our desre to magnfy the name of our precous Lord and Savor, Jesus Chrst. Each year, wc plan to mprove. If adlctcs can attract young people to a Chrstan school, wc arc for t. If adlclcscan hclpour kds to learn how to lve the Chrstan lfe vctorously, we arc for t. These arc thrllng days to be alve. Wc have a glorous opportunty to reach de youth of our generaton. It s my convcton that football can be a part of ths evangelstc endeavor. * Reprnted from the 1973 Lynchburg Baptst College football program :' Flames n the Pros JNIVEHSITY WERTY "Rock" Royer 3-3 Tom Dowlng Sam Rutglano 12-6 John Cartwrght felmt '.Jrstawm Morgan Hout «*«LBC runnng back Km Raynor rushed for 1,112 yards and became the school's frst football All-Amercan n Mam Dolphns recever Fred Banks played for Baptst College from 1982 to alumnus Steve Kcarncs (TE) Glenn Inverso (QB) Jeff Brown (DB) Malt Forslund (QB) Fred Banks (WR) Phl Basso (QB) Steve Clark (FS) Rcnnc Jones (WR) Kelvn Edwards (WR) Wayne Haddx (CB) Bll Kagey (K) Mark Maths (CB) Rchard Shelton (DB) Erc Green (TE) Year Team Bold prnt ndcates player s stll actve 1979 Brtsh Columba Lons (CFL), drafted 1980 New York Jets, free agent 1982 Washngton Federals (USFL), drafted 1982 Washngton Federals (USFL), drafted 1984 Mam Dolphns, drafted by Cleveland Browns 1984 Indanapols Colts, free agent 1985 Buffalo Blls, free agent 1985 Phladelpha Eagles, free agent 1985 New Orleans Sants, drafted 1986 Tampa Bay Buccannccrs, drafted by New York Gants 1986 Dallas Cowboys, free agent 1986 St. Lous Cardnals, free aget ' 1989 Denver Broncos, drafted 1990 Pttsburgh Steelers, drafted Gokko mago M MM MM". <" j...u...nwu!»i;'> WSjIF Jf 10 Vsts 20 Vsts $29.95 $49.95 Tammag Salom Specals 9201 Tmberake Road (Behnd MeDotmld's) Traned Tannng Consultants KICK OFF THE NEW FOOTBALL SEASON AT MINDBOGGLE VIDEOS RIVER RIDGE MALL 2 FREE GAMES WITH COPY OF THIS AD LIMIT ONE COUPON PER VISIT SUN. 10 Page 9, The Champon s 1*5- Flames Feedback Curt Olson Blame t on Rjo! Reds earn straght A's Who would have ever predcted a Reds sweep of the mghty Oakland A's? Not even Jeff Cota, who pre deted the Reds n seven. The Reds were not expected to wn, and nearly every sportswrter and sportscaster n the land predcted an A's sweep. The A's were n frst place for 99 percent of the season. The Chcago You don't wn 103 games by beng sloppy. Congratulatons, Oakland A's, for one fne season. You have no reason to be ashamed. But the Reds won the World Seres because they played as a team, rather than as ndvdual talent. They also won the Seres because they dd exactly what they had to do: score early, get the bg ptch, play great defense and get to the Nasty Boys n the sxth or seventh nnng. The Reds' momentum n theseres hnged on one ptch n the frst n nng of Game One. The frst ptch Erc "The Red" Davs saw from Dave Stewart was crushed nto the concave of the upper deck of Rverfront Stadum. In the words of Reds rght felder Paul O'Nell, "The home run by Erc Davs sent a chll down the Reds bench and everyone was thnkng 'We can wn ths thng.'" From that pont on, the Reds had the A's where they wanted them. They scored early and dd not let up. They knew the A's were just another team, not the nvncble dynasty they were made out to be. After the Reds shut out the A' s n Game One, even I doubted f dey could do t agan. It looked doubtful for the frst three nnngs of the second gameas Danny Jackson gave up four earned runs on sx hts. Reds manager "Sweet" Lou Pnella had tb put hs mddle relef to the test early wth a 4-1 Oakland lead. ScottScudder, Jack Armstrong and chef Nasty Boy Norm Charlton responded to the call and shut out the A's on four hts. The Reds chpped away at the lead, tralng 4-3 n the eghth. Then A's manager Tony La Russa made a major-league mstake when Welch batted and ptched n the eghth. He should have brought n bullpen ace, Eckersley. Welch delvered a ptch to Hatcher, who had ted a World Seres record for consecutve hts, and he launched a routne fly ball to Jo se Canseco. The rghtfelder ms played the ball; Hatcher wound up on thrd and later scored on an n feld force play, tyng the game. In the bottom of the 10th, those unlkely heroes dd t agan when utlty nfelder Blly Bates ht hs frst major-leagueht, scorng on Joe Olver's sngle. A Cncnnat 2-0 lead, headng to Oakland, was pvotal for the underdog Reds. In Game Three, Tom Brownng faced Mke Moore who was 4-0 n postseason appearances For the thrd straght game, the Reds scored early. However, Oakland quckly responded as A' s desgnated htter Harold Banes took the frst ptch from Brownng and parked t n the rght feld bleachers for a 2-1 Oakland lead. The lead was short-lved as the Reds took advantage of a Mark McGwre feldng error and seven hts to take an 8-2 lead. The Reds never looked back as they won 8-3 In Game Four, the Reds agan faced Dave Stewart durng a nght marsh frst nnng. A hgh nsde ptch ht Hatcher on theback of hs left hand. Then Davs, who had played the entre Seres wth a sore left shoulder and a bum rght knee, made what looked lke a perfect shoestrng catch untl the ball Hew out of hs glove as he dove and rolled. Davs stayed on the ground n pan. Soon, the A's led 1-0. Meanwhle, Reds rghty Jose Rjo settled down and mowed through the A's lne up yeldng only two hts, both n the frst nnng. The Reds responded n the eghth nnng when Braggs ht a felder's See Champs, Page 10 sports Tuesday, Oct. 23, 1990 Lady Flames streak snapped Defensve lapse leads V-ball team to dsappontng loss By LORIHILLARD After 10 straght wns, the Lady Flames volleyball team ended ts wnnng streak Frday nght, losng to Amerca Unversty n Washngton, D.C. Takng advantage of the Flames weak defensve play, AU was able to defeat the "better team." "We have a stronger team," Kelly stated. AU's coach added that would have won f ts defense had played up to ts potental. Falngto delver the necessary passes, the Lady Flames were left behnd n ther defensve play. "Our passes were weak," Kelly sad. "Because of that, we weren't able to use (Km) Thomas. That really hurt us." Despte ther weak defense, the Flames were able to stay n the game wth ther offensve play. "(Theresa) Bream and (Km) Ouwenga played an outstandng offensve match," Kelly remarked. Ouwenga had 11 klls durng the match. However, AU fought back wth a tough attack aganst LU' s offensve plays. "Amercan Unversty has a good defensve team," Kelly sad. 'They were consstent n returnng the ball over the net." Begnnng the week on a better note, the Lady Flames captured ther 11th wn aganst Vrgna Tech Tuesday, defeatng them at LU Gym. The Flames turned me tables on VT, after losng to them earler n the season. "They domnated us our frst game of the season," Kelly stated. "Ths tme we domnated them." Startng off strong, Bream exploded aganst VT durng the frst game, slammng a back-lne kll that left VT'sdefensemesmerzed. "Bream pounded the ball," Kelly sad. "She was unstoppable." Bream led the team wth 30 klls and 24 dgs durng the match. Thomas fnshed the task by delverng the fnal kll to end the frst game, "Rght when we needed t, Thomas came through wth crucal klls," Kelly remarked. Thomas had nne klls, 22 dgs, a block solo and two block asssts durng the match. The Flames contnued ther dsplay of excellence n the second game, usng teamwork to capture the wn. "The key to the second game was good passng," Laura Mller, startng setter for the Flames, sad. "That determned the success of our offense." The Flames have lost fve key players from last season; and of ths year's 18-man squad, nne are ether freshmen or sophomores. Head coach Gary Habermas descrbed ths year's Flames as a "very young, developng team buldng lor the future." Habermas sad the team should mprove through the strength of the defense and the mprovement of the goal lenders. He sad, "We'll have trouble scorng goals, but we'll be real strong defensvely and stronger than we were lasl year n the nets." The defense s led by defensve MVP Bret Burrows and John Sesm, along wth newcomers John Ncholson and Jeff Lycell. Sharng lme n the Flames' goal wll be Chrs Becker and Jeff Marshall. Though defense may carry the team, Habermas sad, "Our strength at forward s we've got some ndvduals who are capable of puttng the puck n Ihc nets." Leadng the offensve charge wll be a frst lne consstng of Team MVP center Mke Torrance, Offensve MVP left-wng Dan Lane and rght-wng Jeff Schmdt. Clarence Shelton, fllng n for an njured Leroy Knard, rushed for a career-hgh 116 yards on 25 carres Robbe Justno passed for 281 yards as the Flames, 5-3, never traled n the contest. Overall, had 439 yards total yards offensvely. "We dd what we wanted to do by runnng the ball and keepng the offense fresh," coach Sam Rutglano sad. "By runnng the ball, we got control of the game." The Flames tme of possesson was 14 mnutes longer than the Tgers. was penalzed, however, 21 tmes for 181 yards, both of whch are school records. Towson State also made a school record of 141 yards on 13 flags. The Flames took control on ther frst possesson of the game after a Tger punt pnned them on ther 6. Justno completed two thrd-down Game Nne (4-3) vs. passes, and Shelton rushed for 19 yards before Justno found tght end Mark Thomas open down the mddle for a 51-yard touchdown pass to put LU ahead 7-0. Thomas had three receptons for 74 yards. began ts second scorng drve n the second quarter from the LU 32. Agan, t was Justno who converted a thrd down wth a 33-yard sdelne pass to Scott Queen (four receptons for 48 yards) on thrd-andsx. After sx Shelton rushes and a 6- yard Justno pass, the Flames went ahead 14-0 on a 1-yard dve by Shelton. The Flames then scored on a "fluke of the year" play. The Flames had drven nsde the Tger 10, but a Jason Harrell feld-goal attempt was blocked. Granted Towson State remans wnless after seven games and was not expected to gve even a scare. However, the Flames needed an opponent lke Towson State to renstall the confdence they possessed when they began the season wth four straght vctores. Ths week's opponent, Samford Unversty, took the jump from Dvson 3 to Dvson 1-AA three years ago and has gradually clawed ts way to respectablty. Samford head coach Terry Bowden, son of Florda State coach Bobby Bowden, has guded de Bulldogs to four vctores n seven games, despte havng only four senors on the roster. The Bulldogs, fresh off a wn at Morehead State last Saturday are led by senor halfback Brady Jones, who leads me team wth 771 yards on 146 carres (5.2 yards per carry). Senor quarterback Ted Darbeyhas thrown for 1,211 yards on 86 completons wth most gong to hs favorte target, wdeout Bran James (32 receptons for 697 yards). Before the wn at Towson State, senor fullback Clarence Shelton had started every game but had carred the ball only 11 tmes n seven games. Shelton, who was consdered an ntegral part of the backfeld at the start of the season, had been used strctly as a blocker for talback Leroy Knard. On Saturday, Knard sat out wth a brused shoulder, and the 5-10, 215- pound Shelton fnally got me call. He responded by shreddng the Tger defense for a career-hgh 114 yards on 25 carres. The addton of Shelton as a bonafde runnngtreatgves another dmenson n ts already potent offense. The queston s: Wll head coach Sam Rutglano dstrbute the ball more evenly wth a healmy Knard back n the lneup? Quarterback Robbe Justno contnues to stack up a lst of mpressve numbers throwng for 291 yards on 22 of 33 pass completons n Saturday's wn. Wth 2,275 yards passng n eght games, Justno needs only 241 yards per game n LU's last dree contests to become the second quarterback n hstory to reach 3,000 yards n dear. The Tgers totaled 298 net yards n de contest, but 175 of those yards came n the fourth quarter when the game was well out of reach. Call Ext. 50 Homesck and shy, Sasu adjusts to lfe at LU By EVIE DAVIS Johnny Sasu, lke many college students, left hs famly and some very good frends behnd when he packed hs luggage and moved to. He smled as he thought about home and then quckly looked down. "Oh, I do mss my famly. I mss them a lot," the Ghanan sad. However, he left them about 5,000 mles away n Ghana, West Afrca. "I haven't seen my famly snce 1987," he sad. About three years ago, Sasu was recruted by coach Bll Bell to play soccer for the Flames. "I heard about Johnny through a former LU soccer player who had competed aganst hm n Ghana," Bell sad. Sasu ddn't want to come to LU because t was so far from home. "I attended boardng school all through hgh school, and I was used to leavng my famly. It was never ths far away though!" he sad. Wth some encouragement from hs older brother, Ncholas, Sasu decded to move to the Unted States and begn school at LU. "Ncholas pressed me to come and get my educaton. He sad, 'It's better to have an educaton.' And at, I could play soccer too," Sasu sad. Sasu loved playng soccer as a boy, and he plans to "stay actve" n t for a long tme. "I was probably fve-years-old when I frst started playng. I would really lke to play professonally after I graduate. I just don't know where I'll go." Your Total Car Care Center Hours: M-F 8-7 SAT 8-4 HACK TO SCHOOL SPECIAL Although he does not know where he wll play soccer n the future, Sasu focuses ntently on the games n whch he defends for. "At frst, I'm excted. Then, rght before the games begn, I do a lot of concentratng," he sad. "As a defensve player, I thnk about how I'm gong to prevent mem from scorng and how to contrbute to the team n order to wn." Sasu, a busness management major, enjoys communcatng wth people and makng new frends. "I thnk one of the best thngs about s the people," he sad. He shrugged hs shoulders and contnued. "In Ghana, f I ddn't know someone, I smply ddn't know them. Here at, people make an effort to speak to me, even when we don't even know each other. "I'm a quet person, and sometmes people can msunderstand that," Sasu explaned. "I've always been shy, but that doesn't mean I'm not frendly. "Even when you get to know me, you'll stll fnd that I'm very quet." 's recent prayer meetngs have encouraged Sasu n hs relatonshp wth God. "The prayer meetngs really show that people are concerned. The school has helped buld up my fath n God." "My educaton and soccer are the most mportant thngs to me, but Chrstanty s the bggest part of my lfe," he sad. Wth the dedcaton, determnaton and sprtual maturty that Sasu carres, t s apparent that regardless of what happens n the future, he wll be a success wherever he goes. 13 Page 12, The Champon news RA's sponsor letter wrtng campagn to U.S. solders By JULIE BEUTLER The Resdence Lfe Offce s sponsorng a letter-wrtng campagn to the servcemen n Saud Araba through Tuesday, Oct. 30. Resdent Assstant Bryan Lawton formulated the dea for an "encouragement campagn" from letter-wrtng campagns students have sponsored n the past. When the Pan Am Boeng 747 crashed n Lockerbe, Scotland, n December 1988, kllng 38 Syracuse Unversty students, students responded wth letters of sympathy to Syracuse Unversty. Lawton would lke to see students wantng to reach out to the solders nvolved n the Mddle-East crss. " should set the standard by gettng nvolved," Lawton sad. "As Chrstans, we should be leaders." Lynchburg televson staton WSETprovded Lawton wth the addresses of the seven dvsons currently servng n Saud Araba. Lawton hopes to be able to send several hundred letters to each address. Students are encouraged to wrte a one-page letter to a solder overseas and then hand t n to ther Resdent Asss- LU Debate: Tuesday, tants by Oct. 30. "I'll take all the letters I can get," Lawton stated. "I know everyone s busy, but all t wll take s fve mnutes. It would be great f the whole student body would get nvolved. "The campagn's goal s to make students more aware and help people to see that n small ways they can be a wtness," Lawton explaned. The letters should be nformatve and encouragng, Lawton stated. "The solders get very lttle news from home. Tell them you are supportng them," he added. The letters wll be collected and maled Thursday, Nov. 1. A collecton wll be taken to cover the cost of postage. The campagn s a one-tme push for students to support the servcemen, butlawton would lke to see t contnue. "It would be great f people would carry ths on ther own," he sad. Students can nclude ther addresses f they are nterested n gettng a response. "Take fve m nutes and do t. You never know what could happen from just one letter," Lawton challenged. Impressve start has debate team wantng top spot By BEN LaFROMBOIS The debate team s off to ts best start wth tournament-pont wns at Penn State and Randolph-Macon Woman's College. They have also competed at Emory Unversty and the Unversty of Kentucky. "Overall, we're off to a much better start than last year, and we have never had a team do as well as ths year," coach Brett O'Donnell stated. The early success of the team s due to the strength of ts debaters at every level. "Overall, ths s the strongest team we have ever had," Mke Hall, varsty debater, sad. Each of the novce teams has receved an award at every tournament. Indebateeach level on a team must do well because the pont totals that determne natonal rankngs are the sum of each level on the team. Lfe Chan Contnued from Page 1 club, was also well-represented. Club Presdent Laura Stebbns was happy wth the overall turnout but dsapponted that there were not more students from LU. "I thnk t (the lfe-chan) s awesome. I prase God for the beautful weather and the great turnout. But there should be more LU students. I'm grateful for those who are here, but there should be more." Stebbns added that the Lberators For Lfe would contnue the fght for lfe by demonstratng next Monday and Thursday at a medcal clnc on LanghorneRoad where abortons are also performed. The only problem durng the demonstraton occurred when a separate demonstraton for the hungry, called the Crop Walk, began. Because the lfe-chan demonstrators were on both sdes of the street, polce were concerned about the safety of the marchers. One member of the Lynchburg polce department began walkng down one sde of RVermont. The varsty team traveled to Emory Unversty whle the junor varsty and novce teams traveled to Penn State Sept The varsty team of Hall and Davd Kester was one of the better teams at the tournament, accordng to O'Donnell. The team fnshed4-4 and mssed makng theelmnaton round on speaker ponts." "The Penn State was our best tournament," Tom Walker, varsty team member, stated. Of the seven teams attendng, sx made the elmnaton round. A total of 16 teams made t to the elmnaton round. Jm Sorenson and Tm Edwards made t to fnals n junor varsty competton, whle Noel Brewer and Kevn O'Bren dd the same n novce. Mndy Curre placed second n novce-speaker competton. The competton at the Unversty of Kentucky ncluded teams from Iowa and Wayne State. The varsty tellng people that they had to go to the other sde of the street and stay there. Accordng to Lytle, however, the group's permt allowed them to use both sdes of the streets. Jm Stapelton, an offcer patrollng the area, agreed wth Lytle. The ncdent was resolved when the demonstrators agreed to reman on one sde of the road untl the Crop Walk demonstrators passed. Stapelton sad the pro-lfe group was very cooperatve. "There were absolutely no problems today," he sad. "They actually dd us a favor by agreeng to stay on one sde untl the march passed." The CAC employed 10 of ts members to help supervse the event and keep thngs organzed. Steve Albachten, one of the CAC supervsors, sad, "I thnk ths s great. The Lord has really blessed us today. We all need to stand up and stand togethr. for the unborn." Albachten added that the demonstrators were not seekng personal team fnshed 4-4 wth one of ts wns comng aganst the hgh school natonal champons of two years ago. At the Randolph-Macon tournament the Debate Team proved ts overall qualty by earnng awards at every level and placng frst overall. Fve of the eght teams n elmnaton rounds were from. Noel Brewer and Chrsty Hndson placed frst n the novce class. "We had fve of sx top speaker awards n novce and junor varsty competton," Hall sad. Todd Rffle placed frst; and Sorenson thrd. The team receved eght varsty speaker awards, wth Sherry Smth and Walker takng the top varsty spot, 3-3. "The strength of the team s due to experenced debaters and the debate camp at the begnnng of the year," Hall sad. O'Donnell credted the success to "good work ethcs and the best research we have ever done." gans. "We have nothng to gan personally. We are just here to stand up for the unborn." Renee Zentmeyer of Vrgna Beach sad she hoped the demonstraton would have an mpact upon Lynchburg. "I thnk t wll make an mpact. I know I would be mpacted f I drove through here and saw all these people." In a related story, Lytle's husband Davd, presdent of the CAC, was not at the rally. Lytle sad her husband was "n Norfolk dong the Lord's work." The Lord's work, n ths nstance, refers to servng tme n jal because of a recent rescue demonstraton at a No folk aborton clnc. Accordng to Lytle, her husband s dong well. Bryan Stephens, also n jal because of the Norfolk demonstraton, has been strugglng wth food allerges. Accordng to hs wfe, Stephens "has been knd of down, but he s perkng up. He s allergc to most of the food they serve, but he's been fastng anyway." Shrne Contnued from Page 1 The common thread that the communty says holds these dfferent faths together s what they call "the Holy Lght." One brochure lsts the dfferent relgons the shrne honors and underneath each s prnted a sayng unque to that relgon, whch ncludes a reference to lght. In the case of Chrstanty John 12:46a s quoted: "I have come nto the world as Lght." (The captal L s ther emphass.) A plaque n the Dsplay Hall states, "The Lght s bult nto everythng n the unverse. Everythng has Lght. It s the cosmc Lght that llumnates your way. We all have Lght. All faths honor t. Every altar has Lght. Every relgon has" festvals for Lght." The centerpece of Yogavlle s "TheLght Of Truth Unversal Shrne" whch s called by ts acronym "Lotus." The shrne was bult to resemble the lotus flower because of the flower's ancent relgous symbolsm. The lotus lves n the water, where t floats on top wthout becomng wet. Accordng to a brochure, "The sprtually-realzed person lves n the waters of the world, yet s not dsturbed or nfluenced by them." Gullermn Contnued from Page 1 nght, he sad. "They have to have t fnshed by Nov. 30 because that's the frst basketball game," Gullermn sad. Several questons about racsm on campus were brought up durng the meetng. Gullermn was asked f specfcally recruted mnorty professors. "We have recruted black faculty members," Gullermn sad, "but t sn't a focal pont. We welcome black applcants, but there s no marketng tool we use to get them. We just determne what are needs are (for faculty) and then accept all applcatons." Gullermn also talked about why racsm has not been addressed durng chapel servces. "It hasn't been addressed because there are so many other thngs to address. It does need to be dscussed, but a lot of thngs should Another brochure clams, "The Lotus Shrne radates healng energes to everyone." Thousands of devotees make ther plgrmage to the shrne yearly. Each of the 10 relgons s represented by an altar nsde the shrne. Two other altars exst, one collectvely represents "Other Known Relgons" and another for "Those Stll Unknown." The sanctuary of the Lotus Shrne showcases a sophstcated lghtng system desgned specfcally for the buldng. A column of lght emanates from the central altar and rses to the top of the dome where t dvdes nto ndvdual beams to llumnate each of the 10 altars. The worshper s supposed to be remnded that all faths have, as ther source, the same Lght. Yogavlle s vrtually self-suffcent, contanng mostof the necessary servces such as a general store, credt unon, elementary school, fre department and organc garden whch supples much of the food for Ashram - *wpp 0 Oct. 23,1990 Yogavlle. Meat s forbdden anywhere on the grounds, and resdents observe a strct lacto-vegetaran det. Although Yogavlle offcals deny any connecton wth the New Age Movement, Dr. Norman Geslcr, who has wrtten several books on the New Age, sad that the communty was a mecca for the New Age Movement. "It's very dangerous," he sad. It's dangerous, because t's seductve, and because t s hard for the relatvely untraned Chrstan, whch ncludes over 90 percent of Chrstans, to dstngush the truth from the les." Dr. Gesler contnued, "Yoga s not an nnocent bodly exercse, t s tryng to teach people to get n touch wth a panthestc god, the force wthn (ourselves), the energy whch permeates everythng." Gullermn also talked about the unversty's admssons polces. "Ths s an open-admssons school. But my preference s to make t more selectve," Gullermn sad. "It would do well to requre hgher scores on the Scholastc Apttude test (SAT)." Gullermn sad that although the admssons requrements have not been tghtened, he s pursung t. "We need to ntegrate a system of academc ntegrty," he sad. The campus postal system was also the subject of a few questons. Gullermn sad he s just now learnng about the problems wth the post offce. "Sometmes I get shelded from problems," Gullermn sad. "But the post offce seems to be a recurrng problem.". ~5 \aesr Gullermn sad he was lookng nto the stuaton and would have more answers at a later date. Thanksgvng break generated more questons, and Gullermn explaned the reason for the shortened break. "Most schools have a short break for Thanksgvng," he explaned, "but for some reason ours was longer. Contrary to what many people thnk, we (the admnstraton) do hear complants about Thanksgvng break beng so long." Gullermn sad that although the break wll not be extended, he would lke to see a fall break mplemented. "That sn't to say you can't go home early (for Thanksgvng)," Gullermn sad, "butyou'llhavetocutclasses to do t." Gullermn sad that students wll be able to get permsson from the supervsor's staton to leave early. an HfcBM At JENSENS, we don't lke to see people eatng alone...
