Chapter Number 0788 Happy Holdays, no matter how you celebrate ths tme of year, I hope you have a good one. The end of the year has arrved and what a year t has been. Frst I want to thank all of the 2008 Offcers for everythng they dd to keep ths chapter runnng smoothly and makng Bobby and me look good, LOL. As most of us are new offcers, we spent most of the year scratchng our heads and tryng to make sure, we stayed true to the HOG famly motto of Rde and Have Fun. I thnk for the most part we have been successful n makng sure, we had a lttle somethng for everyone, from the Dual Chapter Pcnc to the weekday rdes. Rene contnued to keep our fnances straght along wth anythng else, we could talk her nto. B.K made sure the chapter was well nformed and handled the Hstorans dutes. Dana dd an outstandng job on keepng the calendar full; I thnk she actually dd a better job than I dd as Head Road Captan. Jm was never wthout a handy safety tp. Erk, well what can you say, he has brought so many new deas and events to the chapter that I thnk he was the drvng force behnd makng sure every chapter member had somethng exctng to look forward to. Mchelle started and Lor fnshed the year handlng the membershp dutes, prmarly makng sure the new members felt welcome and part of the famly. Then there s Bobby, he has stepped up and made sure that anythng that needed to be handled, was handled. Wth my work schedule, I have been unable to attend most of the weekend events but Bobby was there to make sure thngs were handled. Wth 45+ events attended ths year he has gone far and above to make sure the members enjoyed ther chapter experence. All of the Road Captans dd a great job keepng the members on the road. I want to thank Edde, Chrs and Jeff for workng hard to keep strengthenng the relatonshp between the chapter and the dealershp. I also want to thank the Charles Watwood from LAWBIKE.COM and George Sten and Jeremy Ctron from STEELHORSE LAW for ther advertsements n the HOGWASH. The bggest challenge for the offcers wll be to offer more n 2009 that wll be qute a job n tself. I am confdent that you the members wll not be dsapponted; we are already plannng and searchng for new rdes and events to keep everyone busy and rdng. Most of the offcers wll be returnng next year, but we are lookng for a Membershp Offcer, Head Photographer and as many Photographers and Road Captans as we can get. We really want to get as many members as possble nvolved. Ths s your Chapter and your famly, so get nvolved and help to keep ths the best Chapter not only n Georga but n the country. 3 SAFETY OFFICER S ARTICLE STOP We as bkers have a habt of not comng to a complete stop at stop sgns. I am as gulty as anyone else who rdes. I am now makng t a practce to come to a complete stop and put one foot on the ground. My reasons are as follows: Comng to a full stop gves me tme to survey all on comng traffc. Comng to a full stop gves oncomng traffc tme to see me. If caught not stoppng at a stop sgn by a traffc offcer may get you two (2) ponts on your drver s lcense for a rollng stop. After a good lunch, we headed south to Roopvlle, turn left on hghway 5 through Whtesburg, to Douglasvlle, and then returned to the dealershp. One small mshap occurred. Recap of the 2008 Atlanta HOG Summer Move Festval Overall, I would lke to thank everyone who partcpated n the move festval throughout the summer, those who came out to watch a move, or who helped out n one way or another to make the festval a success. Throughout the summer we have wtnessed the tenson between Marlon Brando and Lee Marvn; John Travolta sknny-dppng wth Martn Lawrence; Sr Anthony Hopkns relevng hmself on a lemon tree, and Ncholas Cage s har (and whole body) catches on fre! Whle we gawked, we scarfed down hot dogs, popcorn, yummy desserts and washed t all down wth cool beverages. Yes, f you mssed t, ths was a synopss of the 2008 Atlanta Chapter HOG Summer Move Festval. From Aprl to October, we met n the Pavlon and enjoyed a dfferent feature every other month. For the fnal move n October; Ghost Rder, we were treated to a great selecton of Door Przes, courtesy of Atlanta H-D. I would lke to thank Mchelle Conway, Dense Kng, Lesle Laner, Karen Mathasen, Mark & Nancy Redmon, and of course, Fona Grandowsk; everyone who helped prepare the food, setup and tear down the equpment, and made The 2009 Summer Flm Festval wll be ttled Blockbuster Summer. Essentally any popular move that was publshed to DVD durng the summer wll be n contenton, and all moves wll be decded on a vote. I look forward to munchng on yummy move foods whle watchng the bg screen wth fellow Atlanta Chapter members agan next summer. The Atlanta Chapter, H.O.G. was the club that contrbuted the most money to the Bran Tumor Foundaton ths year. We rased more than $17,000! Lloyd and Anne-Mare were set up n the stagng area at Permeter Mall when we got there and thngs went lke clockwork. I sgned n 130 Atlanta Chapter members and I know I mssed some. It was an excellent turnout. The rde left Permeter Mall on tme and wound ts way down Peachtree, through downtown and ended up at Lakewood Amphtheater. Later on televson I saw a good shot Kevn Trask rdng along wearng hs coyote hat and I m sure I saw Herman Rdley. Condtons were a lot better than n the past when the rde ended n Helen, GA. It was hot, sunny day but there were plenty of covered seatng and good entertanment. The food lnes took qute a whle n the hot sun and left a lttle to be desred. I found myself wonderng how much of that barbecue and cold beer Lloyd and Anne-Mare could have sold f they had set up here. Comedan Jay Leno was there and I understand that he s now a member of the Atlanta Chapter. The new Atlanta Falcon coach, Jerry Glanvlle, was there as was our own chapter member, Johnny Beckman, leadng the pack. There were more than 1,800 motorcycles n the rde ths year and a grand total of more than $213,000 was rased for Bran tumor foundaton. We re proud to clam Johnny as one of out own, but I ll bet he s just as proud of the Atlanta Chapter, I sure am. Thank you, Atlanta Chapter members for all the work and money you contrbuted over ths pas year to ths worthy cause. We dd good. Fund Raser of the Year A specal thanks to Dell and Monty Pearson, the Fund Raser of the Year. Dell and Monty rased $2445. Tckets for a specal drawng for a Wlle G. were gven to our member for each $50 rased. The drawng for the jacket, donated by Edde Houghton and Harley-Davdson of Atlanta, followed the July chapter meetng. The lucky wnner was Anne-Mare Southwck. Congratulatons, Anne-Mare, I ll tell you really deserve t for all the work you ve done ths past year. Thanks, Edde, we couldn t have done t wthout your enthusastc support. TV Star Jons the Atlanta Chapter TV comedan and stand n for Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, s now some dues payng member of the Atlanta Chapter. We owe ths dstncton to our other TV star, Johnny Beckman, who enlsted Jay to help promote the Rde for Kds ths year. Now that we all belong to the same chapter, I wonder f he ll ever nvte some of us to be on the Johnny Carson Show. Talkng about an appearance on TV, be sure to watch the Jerry Lews Telethon on Labor Day. B.K. Ells, Dck Gehrng and Glenda Rdley wll present the Atlanta Chapter check to MDA. We are scheduled to appear at 2:20 P.M.. Chapter Member s Vewpont The new offcers have been elected and for the frst tme snce the begnnng of the chapter t s a brand-new team. I remember on of the very frst rdes of the Atlanta Chapter to Pne Mountan. When we stopped at a rest area there were three or four separate groups and several rders walkng around alone. Now when we stop everyone seems to mngle together. Tmes have changed. I remember, n those early days of the chapter, a rder dong some top end work on hs engne durng a stop and then be ready to rde when the group left. Now t s rare to see any thng but the Evoluton engne and no one performng mantenance on ther bke durng a rde. Tmes have changed for the better, I guess. The frst few years, wth a few exceptons, B.K. mapped every rde, led every rde and organzed every event. It was wonderful to st back and enjoy the rde under hs capable leadershp and not have to deal wth any responsblty, just the enjoyment of the sport. There weren t any ralles, on Daytona and Sturgs but we had great tmes enjoyng our local actvtes wth the chapter, as we do now. B.K. has lad a foundaton for what has been called the largest and best organzed local H.O.G. Chapter by the Harley- Davdson Motor Company corporate offcers. Perhaps the Atlanta Chapter s greatest moments came on June 11, 1989 when, led by Lloyd Southwck, we were recognzed for out fund rasng efforts at the Johnny Beckman Rde for Kds. When I saw Johnny on state readng the lst of donors and he came to the Atlanta Chapter s contrbuton, looked at the crowd, turned to hs companon and whspered, Is ths correct?, PAID then AD

6 announced $22,000. That moment wll lve forever wth the Atlanta Chapter members who were present. Lloyd s leadershp to accomplsh ths wll never be matched. Ths event helped launch the Beckman Rde as one of the major motorcycle charty rdes n the country. In 1988 one of our members saw how dffcult t had become for B.K. to handle all of the responsblty for the Atlanta Chapter. She began to organze the weekend rdes and events and n January 1989 and 1990 an entre year of scheduled events was passed out at the meetng. An amazng feat when you consder that most of the other local chapters had barely a newsletter showng the next weekend event planned. A result of Glenda Rdley s efforts was the partcpaton of other members n mappng out rdes, leadng rdes and suggestng event whch ths chapter has never seen before. As wth all organzatons, ts lfe depends on the partcpaton of ts members. Some of the people who have come and gone and some who stll reman say The Atlanta Chapter s not what t use to be and they are rght! I have seen t grow from nfancy and t s stronger, smarter and more alve than t has ever been. It s such a pleasure to be a member. B.K. Ells, Hstoran 5th Annual Sgnal Mtn. Rde RECAP We met at HDA and added some rders at the CrossRoads for a chlly mornng wth expectatons of sunshne. We were not dsapponted! As we made our way brskly northward across John s Mtn. to the foothlls of Lookout Mountan, we were able to stop and shed a layer or two at Cooper Heghts. Then across the mountan and onto Trenton, GA for a hearty lunch at Randy s Buffett. Mmm good! Now for dessert...twstes! We headed up Raccoon Mtn. wth smles on our faces. After some beautful color along the mountan twstes, we stopped at the TVA Pump Staton Reservor. We were greeted by golden, tree-capped, well-paved roads; followed by a vew of the TN Rver wth a backdrop of Sgnal Mtn. Further along, we traveled a one lane road across the top of the reservor for a spectacular vew across many mles of canyon. We dsmounted to enjoy the Gft. Then we headed across the valley and onto Hwy. 27 toward Suck Creek. We were enclosed by autumn color as we challenged our rdng sklls up and down the western face of Sgnal Mtn...breathtakng! Ths may have been the hghlght of the rde. As we exted from the Leaf Blanket, we warmed our souls n sunshne along the TN Rver. As we reached the southern tp of Sgnal Mtn., we embraced our tanks for yet another twsty experence. Past the Space Shp house, along the man Hwy. 127 and down the northern ter of Sgnal Mtn., fndng ourselves back n the valley watchng hot-ar balloon folks get ready for ther dose of Fall Color. We stopped n Whtwell for some fuel and to share our colorful stores. From here, we head north on Hwy. 108 to Gruetl-Laager only to be greeted by our last set of twstes on Hwy. 50 through Pelham and Hwy. 41S nto Monteagle. What a great endng to a day of 280 mles wth experenced rders. After removng some road dust from ourselves, we gathered to socalze and have some dnner together. We joked and laughed untl our eyelds became heavy. Now, we realzed we were on Central tme AND the clocks were to be turned back... so we ganed some well deserved sleep! We regrouped n the mornng for a rde to Sewanee, TN and the Unversty of the South. Once agan, we sad our thanks at the Peace Memoral. Ths year we went to the Unversty for a spectacular and healthy breakfast...$6/ person.. All-u-can-eat...From here we went through Sherwood for twstes along Hwy. 156, nto Stevenson, up Lookout Mtn. at Mentone and Valley Head, then nto Menlo, GA. We contnued on to Cave Sprngs and stopped for some refreshng sprng water. Afterwards, Noel announced t was tme to eat agan. So he led us to hs new favorte spot n Rockmart, GA the Impala Dner. WOW...a 60 s car buff s dream. We ate along sde the Blues Brothers and a mnt 61 Impala Convertble. Treat yourself to a Father s day meal at ths place. Be careful, ts only opened Thursday through Sunday, and Sunday s 11am-3pm. Ths brought us to about 180 mles for the day wth welcomed solace to head home. I thank the 15 rders and ther passengers for makng yet another memorable and safe Sgnal Mtn. Rde. The frendshps we have bult these past fve years are most valuable. For those of you yearnng to go, watch for the 6th Annual Sgnal Mtn. Rde...Nov. 7, I have already begun plans for ths one wth more new roads.
