begnnng of the school year Howard Raber, Drector of Food Servces, rearranged the tables n Lowry Center dnng room The decso n Was made based upon complants brought to Raber by the Lowry dnng room managers and several food servce employees The complants concerned the routne trashng of several tables that were regularly occuped by the campus sectons Tradtonally, each secton and club has had a table Food Servce pulled apart the tables so that only four, or fve members of a secton could st at a table at one tme Upon seeng the change, the sectons were upset They came to Raber, expressng dssatsfacton Dur ng two InterSecto n Councl (ISC) meetngs, they met wth Raber, askng for a return to the orgnal algnment of the tables Raber subsequently agreed to return the tables to ther orgnal postons, on condton that any transgresson at any tme durng the year by one partcular secton would adversely affect all sectons, and the tables would be splt up j agan After a judgng perod, n whch the sectons showed they could keep ther acts clean, the tables were brought, back together ovef Thanksgvng Break J " Everythng was gong smoothly untl last Monday when Raber receved a complant from hs dnng room manager A secton had poured sugar all over the table, and bascally trashed t The dnng room manager had obtaned pctures of the ncdent, whch now st n a fle n Rabers offce, The presdent of the secton sad that the secton has found the culprts and reprmanded them, and has asked that the secton send a wrtten apology to Raber He sad hs secton has apologzed for the ncdent, and assures that t wll not happen agan Raber has, for the tme beng, decded not to do anythng about the, transgresson One student speculated that k mght be because all the other sectons would come down negatvely on mat Studes By Thomas Karsten Teachers of relgon are surprsngly unanmous n ther answers as to why the study relgon s mportant They nvarably state that understandng relgon s mportant because relgon has had a profound mpact on the course of human hstory Relgon has both bred conflct and led to achevement and advance "Readng the news," as Professor Gordon Tat suggests, "wll demonstrate that relgon stll acts as a major catalyst n human nteracton Issues surroundng the electronc church, aborton, and the mddle east, to name a few, all have strong relgous overtones" Relgous studes are generally vewed wth suspcon Parents and students alke tend to beleve that relgon teachers are bent on ndoctrnaton or converson Ths Woosters relgon faculty emphatcally denes Instead, they stress relgous studes as an needs "But at some pont," says Tat, "you have to have people express ther personal commtment to relgon If you dont, people never have to face up to the heart of ther belef And such expressons are Ths means that Iran could cut off all Gulf shppng f t so desred In order to protect Kuwat ol shpments from Iranan attack, the Sovet Unon offered to lease three Sovet tankers to Kuwat These tankers would be escorted by warshps of the Sovet navy, and thus the Sovets would mantan a mltary presence n the Gulf Kuwat accepted the offer Concerned about the growng Sovet nfluence n the regon US relgons to the near excluson of the JudeoChrsta n world, Wooster attempts to do both Indeed, Woosters dverse student body s a rch rescour ce for the faculty, snce t allows them access to belevers of many dfferent creeds The relgon department at Wooster recently changed currculum It s now dvded nto three broad areas: Relgous thnkng, Relgon n hstory, and Relgous ethcs Ths currculum s not, however, solated from the other dscplnes The faculty emphaszes the relevance of relgous studes to other felds, such as hstory, psychology, socology and phlosophy "In fact," says Professor Smth, "students have often remarked that they lke the relgon major because t cuts so broadly across all of de academc departments" n the through the reflaggng n July, bendng martme law by not requrng the Kuwat tankers to meet US safety standards for one year Snce then there have been a number of mltary confrontatons between US and Iranan forces On July 24 USescorted a tanker ht a mne, probably lad by Iran On AugustlO 4 December 11, 1987 THE WOOSTERj VOICE Page 3 College contnues asbestos removal program V By Jonathan Barclay Those bg black boxes dottng the landscape between Lowry and Kauke are not Chrstmas presents "The plywood buldngs house flters beng used by the Serra Envronmental Group to remove asbestos partcles from the ar whle crews remove asbestos from underground steam lnes along Memoral Walkway Clnton HofsteUer, drector of the Physcal Plant, noted that asbestos must be removed so that employees can make muchneede d repars to the steam lnes safely The flters are "absolute flters," and wll remove almost all partculate matter from the ar, accordng to Hofstetter All asbestos removal and lne repar n the area should be complete n January, accordng to Hofstetter The asbestos removal along the Walkway follows addtonal asbestos removal and steam ppe repar at the northwest comer of Holden Hall several weeks ago Hofstetter sad that there had been some leakage and dranage n the area That steam ppe repar requred that steam be shut off from the entre campus north and west of Holden, whch les along the man steam lne All resdence halls and most academc buldngs were wthout hot water durng the day on several days just before Thanksgvng Break Serra Envronmental Group s headquartered n Ml Vernon, Oho, and s a "hghly techncal, nsured" company for work lke asbestos removal, accordng to Hofstetter Serra must meet federal Envronmental Protecton Agency and state requrements and undergoes tests for regulaton complance Vcepresdent for Busness and Fnance Wllam Snoddy sad that the asbestos removal from Holden and Memoral Walkway steam ppes and ther repar s a $50,000 package agreement The work currently beng done s part of a longter m plan to remove dangerous asbestos from the campus n complance wth government regulatons Other sectons of the campus steam lne, ncludng one area under Holden, reman to be cleaned out, accordng to Hofstetter He added that he s not aware of any areas on campus whch pose a hazard to students However, several "mechancal rooms" or access rooms used by employees are not yet free of asbestos The asbestos removal on campus comes after an nspecton several years ago Hofstetter also sad the steam lne repar wll probably contnue, because "A thousand feet of steam lne between Holden and the power plant has leaks and needs to be repared and replaced sometme n the next year," but he does not expect further problems n the area near Holden M v :r S&ur Workers repave northwest entrance to Holden Hall Hot Water was turned of durng the repars Ths Is also the locaton of the "Where n Woo" photo from last weeks Voce (photos by Margaret Lydecker) t 1 "V"v" The Wrters Block: By Andrew Mayer Arrvaderc J As ths s my last column Im at a crossroads as to not only what I should wrte about, but also the style that I should use to wrte t I mean some people lke t when I get all sentmental, and others are really happy when I play the "angry young man" As ths, s my last column, and I spend so much of my tme tryng to keep everyone happy (ths s sarcasm, for those who were unaware) so maybe Ill do a lttle of both, but dont count on t So many people have come up to me and told me how lucky I am to be gettng out of college Lucky? What the hell do you mean Im lucky? I may not be n love wth ths college, but I love college You get room, board, homework (whch does have t good ponts), and partes for four years You get to st around worryng about ntellectual problems for four years OK so you dont get graded n the real world, but ts also a hell of a lot harder to bullsht your way through a busness presentaton, not mpossble, but harder Of course freedom from school wll have ts good ponts, and IH have at least two years to decde what graduate school I want to go to when I get tred of that freedom Besdes my salary s pretty good, and I get to lve n the "fun cty" tself, San Francsco But f you really thnk gettng up at eght oclock n the mornng s better than havng one oclock classes you need a great deal of help But lke I sad, the pay s gopd College s also a socal heaven Where else but n school can you walk around dorms meetng new people just by walkng nto the rooms wth open door? Oh sure, youre not always welcome, but most people are happy to see a new face, someone to dscuss ntellectual ssues wth And partes! In the outsde world there arent four partes a weekend to attend, n fact most weekends there snt even one You also dont get free magaznes wth lots of Spuds MacKenze ads n them (I have a feelng that beer n general just snt as much fun out of college In fact Id lke to admt somethng In a very basc way, I have always hated beer) Maybe beng n college s one of the last thngs that really seperates us from our parents Even f every body no longer reles on them for support n a fnacal way we stll refer to ther place as home For most of us thats where we go between Chrstmas vacaton and the begnnng of second semester Its where we keep all our stuff, ncludng all those books we couldnt sell back to the bookstore, (anybody have a psychology text I can borrow?) And they treat you ncer when you get back, for a few days at least, but t stll s home What t wll be after graduaton snt clear yet, I thnk Ill have the same status as those people my parents have over for long weekends But what wll become of me, how long do we have before we become our parents? Once were on the fast track, the rat race, s there any turnng back? The shock and slence of the frst semester of College for a whole lot of folks that the senors dont know, namely the frst year students And hey, everyones arteres have hardened just a bt more Ths column has been used for some stranger stuff, but why dont we talk about real lfe strange stuff It s all around us, especally ths semester Crazness n Kauke Probably the strangest thng happened only recently There they are, a bunch of Susan Newtons socology students lstenng raptly to her lltng prose, when n walks a man He s wearng a snster eye patch over hs left eye, and a secretve 007 trenchcoat that has really been through the trenches He speaks wth a raspy voce, steeped n mystery "Down wth the Humantes!" he cres, as he lets the trenchcoat drop to the floor He stands n front of the class, wearng only the eye patch and the sublmest of smles The class frst jerks back n shock, but then seeng ts only another streaker, resume ther typcal blank look All except for a few students n the back of the class They are conferrng ntently among themselves The man stands, fngerng a pece of chalk he pcks up He seems to be watng for somethng A precocous sophomore n the front row turns around, "Hey do you all have somethng to share wth the class? We have had enough nteruptons, wth the fre drll, the streaker, and all the slly questons" The group n the back of the class snorts at the soph, and turns back ther conferrng After a few more moments, they slowly, almost pensvely, reach to the floor, and lft whte cards wth numbers wrtten on them The mysterous mans eyes lght up, as they follow the cards ascenson toward the sky The room moves n slow moton now The cards rse and rse, and the numbers become clear: 85, 90, 65, 79 The man lfts hs arms, and roars wth vctory "Oh, youve made me so happy!!!" The amazng thng s that t really happened A Mystery for the Ages Ths s the scoop of the year here at the COW The students here have all seen the damage beng done to Lowry Center, and around campus Some of you may even have done t Or so was thought up untl yesterday(omnous Note, preferably from an Oboe) Hey, one cant blame securty for not fgurng out the mystery After all, who commts most of the damage to the campus from year to year? Rght! The students do It s natural to assume that ths year s no dfferent from any other Dont the years just run together here, and you feel lke the campus hasnt changed one bt, and youre stll gettng harrass ed by the same dots? (well thats" a whole nother thought) Anyway, the thng was that ths damage was happenng n a certan pattern, whch scared the hell out of Securty They fgured they were up aganst an organzed group of students Good God they thought, when they put they devlsh mnds to somethng, thngs happen These kds were even better organzed than say, SCN, ECOS, and even the average Intcrrrural sports team They Far mustered ther forces, focusng on the students, and found nothng Theores as to the damage were beng tossed around campus lke wet leaves on a Saturday rany day rakng One ascrbed to by a group of mltant Faban(the snger, not the Utopan theorst) Anarchsts n Kenarden held that some of Stephen Kngs "TommyKnockers" had jumped out of the pages of the dsplay copy n Flo O, had come to lfe, and were gong around scarng the lvng bejezu s out of furnture, art, and anyone wearng polyester Ths group was quckly put to death by a zealous group of Bakunn (the Utopan theorst, not the snger) Anarchsts who muttered, "Theyre musclng n on our terrtory If anyone s gong to foment revoluton on ths campus, ts gonna to be us!!" The Bakunns thought that the culprts were members of the Chos, a womens club on campus But everyone agreed that these folks were too nce to be at the heart of such horrble acts Alrght 111 come to the pont It was three am, and John Muttonhead was staggerng across campus, when he had a flash of brllance He went straght to Securty and told them who the culprts were Tm lell n ya,"he sad, "ts those 1 1 yearol d skate punks that hang around on campus Theyve been causng trouble all over Wooster!!" 7 ed, Page 6: THE WOOSTERj VOICE: December 11, 1987 Letters to the Edtors: Fre, protest and a correcton Dear Edtors: Dear Edtors: Beng a former Securty Offcer for the College of Wooster I was very pleased to see the artcle n the November 13 ssue of the Voce concernng fre safety (Wooster emphaszes preventon and fre safety pg 2) However, as a state certfed Fre Safety Inspector and a volunteer frefghter for the past seven years, I do wsh to pont out an tem that concerns me In the artcle, the fre emergency procedure s explaned n four steps The fnal step reads, "Leave the buldng" It s my opnon that ths should be step number two and should be done mmedately after notfyng the other occupants n the buldng of the fre (actvatng the nternal alarm) There are several reasons for ths Fre tself spreads verey quckly A rule of thumb n the fre servce s that fre doubles n ts sze and ntensty every three mnutes In the larger campus buldngs ths may not create a very great threat However, n a small house on campus the threat s more obvous In our modern age, we fnd many synthetc products surroundng us These products often create deadly gases when burned, such as cyande Even very bref exposure to these gases can be fatal I dont even want to thnk of the possbltes f a fre were to occur n the chemstry buldngthe pont s, that ANY fre presents an mmedate danger to yourself The tme t takes to seek a telephone or fre alarm box on campus s justfed when t may have saved your lfe A second tem that I feel needs to be addressed s how you would attack a fre you may dscover Whle t s safest to leave the fre and let the professonals deal wth t, you may have the desre to attempt to put out a small fre yourself usng one of the many fre extngushers avalable on campus It s mportant to remember that the fre extngusher s meant to be a "frst ad" devce n fghtng fre Wth ths n mnd, you should assume that f you cannot extngush the fre wth one fre extngusher, t s too bg for you to safely attack GET OUT and let someone put t out who has the tranng and equpment to do so safely It s not my ntenton to dscredt Ms Garlands artcle It s a very mportant topc and gvng attenton to t s long overdue at The College of Wooster Fre s a serous matter and needs to be addressed I commend the Voce and Securty Offce for ther efforts and hope to see more artcles on fre safety n future ssues Sncerely, Rchard A Nester As members of SCN, and as partcpants n the slent vgl to protest the CIA, we found the statement made by hstory professor Dr John Gates to be unrealstc The mpetus for change seldom comes from "wthn" the system that needs changng The catalyst comes from pressure on the "outsde" The Cvl Rghts movement was successful because of the protests organzed by Dr Martn Luther Kng, nonvole nt NonVole nt the Student Coordnatng CommUee (SNCC) the Natonal Assocaton for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and other concerned ctzens Whte people n the South dd not decde to change ther ways; pressure placed on them from the outsde forced them to In lght of ths, t s nave to thnk that the CIA s gong to change by tself, for the people who are n charge do not want t to As ctzens whose tax dollars fund the CIA, we should publcly protest ther nsdous actons carred out n our name and n the name of democracy as well as use the power of our vote n order to force Congress to reform the organzaton We can no longer be slent about the realty of the CIA; we must speak out and work for change now The protest n front of CD&P was done n good taste The protest ers dd not heckle ntervewees as they entered the offce, nor dd they shout at the people who walked by As for Dan Brunelles comments n hs letter to the edtor, n no way s SCN responsble for the folders on the CIA and the FBI that, accordng to the secretary of the CD&P, "were taken from the offce wthout beng sgned out and returned some days later" It s offensve for Brunelle to even suggest t wthout any facts to back up hs clam The lterature put nto the ntervewees malboxes and the manner n whch we dd t cannot be compared to "Lyndon LaRouche and hs warped datrbe" The lterature comes from relable sources that are respected by many church and peace groups Addtonally, there s nothng llmanner llegal, or covert about wrtng down the box numbers of the CIA ntervewees whch were posted on a clp board on the wall of the CD&P offce Nobodys prvacy was volated and no one was harrassed any more than they would be by a K Pzza D coupon Furthermore, there was nothng chldsh and dshonest (as Mr Brunelle suggested) about our actons In fact, we note the rony of a potental CIA employee complanng that hs prvacy was nvaded Is Mr Brunelles letter not actually a smoke screen to draw attenton away from the real ssues?
