2 Wake Forest College WNSTON-SALEM, N. C., MONDAY, JANUARY 7, n57 ~ssssppans Went Overboard Snce the Supreme Court handed down ts much-applauded yet muchcondemned decson on racal desegregaton, almost every publc nsttuton n the South has taken some. step or at least done a bt of thnkngabout ts stand on the matter. The problem has erupted most volently n publc schools, but there has also been acton on the college level. The dev elopments have contrasted sharply. North Carolna's three major state-supported college unts;. for. nstance, have absorbed N e g r o e s wthout trouble whle n Alabama the publczed Autherne Lucy proceedngs caused not only court fghts, but physcal volence as well. Few thnkng Amercans have been nave enough to suppose that ntegraton-even at the college lev:el- can be mmedately accomplshed n all areas of the South. But whle rabd segregatonsts can expect a degree of patence and sympathy from those who would ntegrate, t seems also that they should dsplay a deg ee of common sense on the matter. State offcals of Msssspp last week prased the actons of the Unversty of Msssspp and M ssspp State College after those two schools had refused to let ther basketball teams play a team wth a Negro player n ts lneup. One 'state senator called the wthdrawal from the cournament the "only.honorable course they could take," but we would condemn t as not only dshonorable, but cowardly and senseless as well. Three N: egro players competed n North Carolna's Dxe Classc basketball'tournament ths season., Not only. 'were thev accepted; one w'as reco, gnzed handsomely for hs ablty. n fact,, the presence of the Ne gr~ n. athletcs has been an everyday sght snce Joe Lous startng push n.g heavyweghts a r o u n d. and Jacke Robnson frst swung a bat for the Dodgers. t just sn't a thng to get hepped up about. So nstead of takng an "honorable course," the Mssssppans w e n t overboard n a Southern sea we':t:e surprsed to learn. ever exsted. lt'::; due tme some se gregatonst.s learned the dfference between cvl rghts and common decency. 'Town And Gown: Relatons Wnston-Salem moved to Wake Forest last week. The annexaton of an area :J.clud-, ng the Wake Forest campus by the cty of Wnston-Salem became effectve Jan.. brngng the two a lttle closer together, legally at least. There were no celebratons, but the event was not wthout sgnfc~ance. Such acton could concevably cause complcatons n the relatonshp of college and cty. There could be questons as to polce jursdcton, fre protecton or other regulatons. But n vew of past happenngs, t doesn't seem lkely. The proverbal "town and gown" relatons were handled favorably when Wake Forest was n a small town; they should contnue wth such good wll n Wnston-Salem. The man thng to be remembered by all concerned s that Wake Forest s a college-and a college s a communty by ts own rghts wth ts own characterstcs. By necessty some of those characterstcs wll be dfferent from those of the rest of the cty. Wnston-Salem has accepted many of these dfferences. t must contnue to expect and accept them. We do not mean by ths that the cty should wnk ts eye at llegal destructon and dsorder on the campus. On the contrary, the cty has the rght to expect--and even demand-that Wake Forest's students be equally as wellmannered and adult as are the townspeople of Wnston-Salem. Ctzens of the college communty must respect the' laws and r ghts of what s now ther home, just as the cty must consder the rghts of the College. The slght change n the relatonshp of cty and College last week has emphaszed some ponts about the two. \Vnston-Sa'lem people are stll learnng about the actvtes and thp methods of college people. We/ hope they are proftng by, or at least enjoyng, the events such as plays, lectures and athletc contests whch they observe. The College has v;rsely oppned ts doors to the cty, but t must always remember-especally n the feld of athletcs--ts foremost responsblty, the responsblty t has to ts students. Students have found town facltes lackng n some respects; such as n. the qualty of moves. But the cty's restaurants, bus servce and other offerngs have been valuable. And tlere reman other worthwhle features of Wnston-Salem stll largely undscovered by Wake Foresters. Whatever the cty has to offer the College. or the College the cty, the annexaton wll brng the two closer. May they greet each other agan n good fellowshp-and n mutual respect. -C. H. R. The Cornered Poetry Crtc (By Sdn.ey J. Barrs n the Wnston-Salem Journal) " just don't go for ths modern poetry," :;;ad the man who was walkng to the bus wth me. " can't make head or tal out of t, and that's a fact." "Naturally," repled. "Very few lvng wrters can compete wth the great ooets of the past. After all, when you fnsh l"eadng 'Paradse Lost'.. suppose you've ;.-e-read t lately?" "Well," he squrmed a lttle. "Not lately. n fact, not snce fnshed my junor year n hgh school."... "Of course," sad, "you, ~ay be ;nore drawn to the Lake poets. Now Wordsworth's 'Prelude'-that was a poem. Remember the lovely part begnnng 'There s one great socety.alone on earth..'?" "Can't say 've looked much nto Words. worth lately," he mumbled. "Evdently you're a purst about poetry," sad. " should have known t at once. Of course, when you have an evenng to spend wth a book, you open Shakespeare's sonnets,.and move wth hm nto the sessons of sweet slent thought.'' ''You know, 've often meant to," he blurted, "but the truth s haveo't looked at LLOYD PRESLAR. Edtor Shakespeare, ether, snce left school. But dd see the move 'Henry V.' Fne show. Very strrng battle scenes." - "Ah," t exclamed. "Then t's the epc qualty of ancent poetry that you mss. n our modern bards. Now 've placed you- see you sttng n front of the fre, declamng those noble passages from 'The lad,' or beng moved by the chvalry of the 'Chason de 'Roland.' s that t2". "Well, no," he confessed. "Just never got.around to Homer. And never heard of the chanson what-you-may-call-t." "Then possbly," ventured, "your averson to modern poetry sprngs from your deep devoton to the 9th century Romantc school." "! wouldn't exactly cal myself a Romantc," he sad doubtfully. "What t amounts to," fnally suggested, "s that you don't actually lke poetry of any knd, but you're ashamed to say so about ancent poetry that has become 'respectable' and 'great.' Tell me honestly, have you serously sat down to read any poem, old or new, for years?" There was no answer. turned, and he had fled, n the fog, on lttle cat feet. Speakng. for myself (and magne qute a few others), am tred of such nonsense and am ready to get back to the orgnal purpose of a chapel program: to make the lsteners better persons.. Snce nost of the above crtl~ ;... "').., ' csm s negatve n nature, would lke to present one person's opn-on on rejuvenatng our chapel from the low state n whch t has. fallen. There. are. many people over the state who would not only be glad to take part n such a projeet, but would help the students become better persons and cause them to thnk. For example, would suggest Governor Hodges, Kerr Scott, Sam Ervn, any of the Congressmen, John Myers, Junus Scales, Dr. George W. Heaton, Dr. John A. Redhead, Carl Sandburg and countless others n the state who are assocated wth varous nsttutons. There are qute a few natonal leaders n dfferent felds who am sure would welcome the opportunty to speak to our student body: Norman Thomas, Rchard Nxon and many others who have a cause to plead. Perhaps some of these men would cost some money, but see no reason why the College can not fnd the amount requred to get gooa speakers here. Snce ths s merely my opnon on what chapel should be lke, am sure that some would change our programs n other ways; nevertheless, am hopng that those who are responsble for the poor Tuesday programs wll reexamne ther poston.
