C. Under the plan students would be nstructed at the Arways arport n West Hanover, Massachusetts, under the general drecton of Captan Rohlfs, ground school supervsor. Only ten students wll be selected, t s understood, although t s possble that all 32 students who have sgned up wll be permtted to take Lhe course. Grads Buy Boyden House; May Be Alumn Center Boyden House, late Summer Street home of the two Boydens, was bought by the Brdgewater Alumn Assocat"on last month culmnatng a threeyear drve for funds n order to preserve and utlze an outstandng landmark n the hstorv of the college. Deed to Boyden House passed to the Alumn Assocaton from Dr. Edward A. Boyden, drector of research at the Unversty of Mnnesota, and Mss Ethel Boyden. Although ntended for use as the home of the presdent, n place of Gates House, present plans ndcate that the house may serve for another purpose, perhaps as an Alumn headquarters. Vote to purchase and recondton the house was taken at the meetng of the Assocaton on June 1, Occuped Nearly Half Century Both Albert G. Boyden and hs son, Arthur C. Boyden, heads of Brdgewater from 1860 to 1933 consecutvely, lved n Boyden House for over 40 years of ther admnstratons. t has not been occuped snce Mrs. Arthur Co' Boyden's death n Promnent n the movement for the addton of Boyden House to the College plant are a large number of fa~hful alumn whch ncludes: Mrs. Ehzabeth West Pgeon, Charles A. Jenney, Mrs. Flora T. Lttle, Harold D. Hunt and Charles J. Fox. Noted Harvard Geologst Addresses Student Body "The Art of Lvng n ths Age of Scence" was the subject of Professor Krtley F. Mather's Lecture Fund talk durng the Chapel perod last Tuesday. Dr. Mather s a professor of 'geology at Harvard Unversty. Durng the summer sesson he s head of the summer school there. Recent earth tremors put Dr. Mather n the headlnes as he was ntervewed a number of tmes concernng ther meanng and cause. He s famous for hs research regardng earthquakes. Other Noted Speakers Scheduled Lecture Fund wll also SDonsor addtonal speakers n the n~ar future. Among those already selected are Dr. Paul]. As the second half of our school year approaches, we may look forward to some very nterestng Chapel programs, accordng to Chapel commttee members. Frst, of course, come the programs put on by the varous classes. The junors already are rehearsng a program whch s tentatvely set for March. The sophomore and freshman classes have also made tentatve plans to produce somethng worthwhle n the way of Chapel programs. The much awated Pageant moves are beng cut and edted, and we wll see them n the latter part of February, before the md-term recess. These pctures should be of great value especally to the freshmen, who had no opportunty to attend the Pageant. Arrangements are also beng made to have an orchestral program, and nterestng speakers have been approached.

On the campus there s a lmted number of opportu- ntes for leadershp. f several students ==============================_ are llow~wmoo~~~ ll cll~ MSDRECTED ENTHUSASM Once agan Chapel deportment has cropped up to remnd us that Brdgewater s a professonal nsttuton whose every acton and statement s closely scrutnzed by educators and parents throughout the country. Although we all regretted the passng of the hlarous Chapel announcements of three years ago whch mght come from any or all parts of the Horace Mann Audtorum, we were forced to consder the unfavorable mpresson they must have made on vstors unacquanted wth ther purpose and sprt. Our recent menton of flng out of the audtorum at the coneluson of the exercses accordng to academc precedence brought results whch necesstated no further acton. The followng Chapel was a perfect example of Brdgewater's fundamental courtesy. Partcular prde should be taken n the fact that the pre-exstng condton was student-noted, the correcton was student-suggested and the results were brought about by student-acton. And we would lke to note one of our best Chapel courteses, one that s seldom mentoned and unconscously carred out. Our applause has won the prase of many vstors and guest speakers due to ts sncerty, spontanety, abundance and warmth-elements rarely found n the ordnary college assembly applause. Yes, we frmly beleve that less and less adverse crtcsm can be placed on student shoulders. But, evdently, mprovement has stll to be made. Let us not fall down now! CAMPUS COMMENT BRTHDAY Wth ths January seventeenth ssue of the college newspaper we begn our sxteenth year of publcaton, for t was n January of 1926 that CAMPUS COMMENT frst appeared at Brdgewater. Durng these past years we have always tred to produce a paper that s professonal n ts standards and not just an avocaton for a small group of students called the staff. Our efforts have been especally bent toward puttng out ssues that would successfully meet the needs and nterests of the steadly-ncreasng student-body. n our work we have been guded by Mss Olve H. Lovett, a newspaper specalst and journalsm nstructor. Her nvaluable ad and drecton wthout domnaton have been wrtten of and prased before n these columns. Already we are lookng forward to our sxteenth brthday whch we hope to celebrate n a fttng manner. By ths s meant a vctory celebraton, our preparaton for whch s mostly contaned n our present efforts towards mprovng our newspaper. The Press Club s functonng to provde us wth good staff materal by gvng students tranng and experence n newspaper work. Bt by bt we are endeavorng to ncrease our news coverage. Each year sees us ssung more frequently and usng as many more cuts as our budget wll permt. We often have the newspaper evaluated by experts n the journalstc feld and by ther suggestons proft mmeasurably. Members of the staff constantly study new trends n college newspapers and attend several journalsm conferences and conventons each year n order to dscuss and solve our problems and keep n step wth the newest trends. We are not askng for commendaton. Rather do we make a bd for your comments on our ssues, for t s only by carefully notng student reactons that we are able to drect the paper nto the channels of whch Brdgewater approves. opportuntes, the ones would could beneft lose out. There s also a queston as to whether the student who takes on several postons nvolvng leadershp has the tme and energy to do the work entaled for each as well as f he concentrated on one or two. t was because of these problems that the pont system was adopted by the Student Councl. A defnte number of ponts were gven for each actvty partcpated n and for each offce held. Then the number of ponts held by each ndvdual were lmted as the handbook of S. C. A. savs: "No student may carry more than 12 ponts at anyone tme. An excepton to ths s made n cases where the ratng for offces adds up to ten or more ponts. Under ths condton one may rase hs maxmum number of ponts to 15 through club membershp. Offces are not to be held n excess of 12 ponts." Through lack of knowledge of ths rule by some and through non-enforcement of t by others durng last year's electons, a comparatvely small number of students are holdng offce whle a large majorty are losng out on chances to develop ther powers of leadershp. Ths year the Scholarshp Commttee s gong to enforce ths rule, but t wll need the understandng and cooperaton of everyone. When the tme for electons comes, watch the bulletn boards for drectons whch wll help to open up the holdng of electve offces to as large a number of students as possble. The queston was expanded to nclude labor's rght to strke, especally durng the present defense program. Eleanor Fulton, Eleen Walsh, Joseph Cumerford, and George Chassey were leaders n ths dscusson. WOMEN'S GLEE CLUB Practce for the Glee Club concert was started Tuesday, January 8 and wll be contnued followng exa~naton week. Snoop centered all her attenton on the delghtful repast before her and fell to wth more vm that '{race. Tme passed; one ate; one 'londered. "Snap Ollt of t, chum. Let's go down tl) REX ALL'S for some new magaznes. 1\1y supply s runnng low what wth 'll the grls snaggng them for sck frends," jazzed Snoop a.s she "Cheero'd" out of the "dog cart" up to the corner drug store. Standng by the song rack were many co-eds hummng the newest melodes and among them wggled Snoop and found at long last the song she wanted. Fnally, loaded down wth popcorn, magaznes and new songs, Scoop and Snoop jved up the street to SNOW'S for the grls had whspered glad tdngs of new sweaters-all shades, too. Can any woman resst such a cry? No! So. lackng all orgnalty, Snoop followed the crowd. Fred ddn't have to show Snoop the new lne for she was already gazng wth undsgused delght at the supply of lovely sweaters. "You know, my pet, a college grl can never have enough sweaters," murmured Snoop to a now wde-awake Scoop who manfully brought out hs wallet and bought the dear grl an nfter-ch rstmas present of a powderblue long-sleeved sweater. "All rght, young 'un. Let's he home before you get any more brght deas," sad Scoop whle Snoop only sweetly repled, "But dear, that's another broken resoluton-you were gong to save you're money. Perhaps you had better forget all about those resolutons any.. way!" Campus Comment Staff Celebrates Annversary Are college students too old for brthday partes? " Ths queston was answered very successfully n the negatve by the staff of CAMPUS COMMENT ths Tuesday afternoon, January 14, at 3:45 p. m. The occason was the ffteenth brthday annversary of the newspaper, celebrated by a party n Woodward Rec Room. Dancng, refreshments and games were all the order of the day, and a brthday cake wth 14 candles was the center of attracton. One of the novel ga.mes enjoyed was l'pn the moustache "11 a promnent dctator." excursons wll be joned on one flm for the pleasure of the club. The flm wll be shown at the next meetng. GERMAN CLUB A muscal program of German folk songs was the hll for the recent German Club meetng. Specal feature of the meetng was the sngng of the Schntzlebank. and several couples sang duets. Ruth Arrved Frst Ruth Humphreys' West Pont Chrstmas began on Chrstmas Eve. Lllan Russell arrved the day after Chrstmas, and Rosemary Durant soon followed her. Sxty mles from New York Cty, stuated on the west bank of the Hudson. the mltary college presented qute a vew to those Brdgewatertes. Upon arrval they were nstalled at the Thayer Hotel. Gong to Grant Hall's recepton room, Lllan Russell was asked by someone whom she was draggng. Lllan looked behnd her quckly. and realzed only too late that a "drag" n West Pont nomenclature s same as our term "date". the Nne "Drags" for Ruthe Ruth Humphreys was there the longest and enjoyed fve formals and four tea-hops. One dance enjoyed especally by the Plebes was the "spot" dance. All the lghts were turned off except one spotlght that traveled around the floor. The dances were held n Cullum Hall. Ths buldng has 343 lghts n the roof. Another awesome buldng s the Gothc Chapel. t s set upon a clff 450 feet above the plan. At nght colored search-lghts play upon t, and t presents a strkng nght-tme appearance. Wtness ce-carnval West Pont has ts own ndoor skatng rnk. They held an ce-carnval, and Eastern Natonal Champons performed for the entertanment of the guests. n the "Southern Sweepstakes" boys from the South who had never seen skates before were put on the ce and made to partcpate n an obstacle race. Thck southern accents were matched by western drawls. There were grls present from Washngton, Oregon, Florda and one who came all the way from Panama. Even though an ordnary classroom creates many unusual stuatons daly, those of you who desre somethngdfferent wll be nterested n the experence and advce of Bll Nolan, one of our 1938 graduates. Setup of nsttuton Wth all the outward characterstcs of a very modern preparatory schuol, ths nsttuton provdes homes and tranng for about two hundred and eghty delnquent boys whose age range s nne to eghteen. The. Q. range s from 47 to 128 wth a medan at All the boys are commtted by the courts for an ndefnte perod whch generally averages ffteen months. M., fve days a week, forty-nne weeks a year. n addton, they are on call for emergency duty at all other tmes. Two of ther holdavs must be spent "playng cottage parent". Most of us would thnk boys n such an nsttuton would not have vacatons. Ths partcular nsttuton grants three-day vacatons to well-behaved students. These are earned at a rate of one day a month after' the frst three months, wth a free day gven as a rc"\vard when a month passes wthout a runaway. The fve- and sx-day Chrstmas and Easter vacatons are gven to those who have been n the school for sx months and who have lved up to the rules. Ths past Chrstmas, 167 boys were allowed to go home and all came back on the apponted day. The school system allows for regular promoton and graduaton.
